BlackBerry cuts loss and sees rising sales; shares jump

BlackBerry cuts loss and sees rising sales; shares jump

BlackBerry cuts loss and sees rising sales; shares jump
BlackBerry  reported a smaller quarterly loss and flashed encouraging signals about its hard-pressed smartphone business as well as its software and services sales.

BlackBerry reported a smaller quarterly loss on Friday and flashed encouraging signals about its hard-pressed smartphone business as well as its software and services sales, spurring a more than 4% jump in its shares.

The Canadian company, a smartphone pioneer pushed to the margins by Apple's iPhone and devices running Google's Android software, is now focusing more on software and services than on hardware as it works through a long turnaround.

On the services front, the company reported a huge number of conversions in its second quarter to its heavily promoted new device management platform. But BlackBerry's hardware unit also offered hopeful news, posting an adjusted profit for the first time in five quarters, helped by lower manufacturing costs and strong demand for its low-end Z3 handsets in emerging markets.

"This is the first time in a long time that we have actually made money on hardware," chief executive John Chen told reporters, while hinting at plans to unveil new phones at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in 2015. "We think we can continue on that track, so hardware is no longer going to be a drag to the margin and the earnings."

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company's revenue in North America rose from the previous quarter, but sales slipped elsewhere. Its total revenue was down more than 40% from a year earlier.

"They're taking all the right steps, which is great. It's encouraging to see," said BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis. "Now we've got to see what Chen can do about the revenue decline."

BlackBerry shares were up 5.2% at C$11.45 on the Toronto Stock Exchange and up 4.6% at $10.26 on Nasdaq.

Good Start

Chen, who became BlackBerry's CEO in November, said the company has already taken 200,000 orders for its new squared-screened Passport smartphone, which went on sale on Wednesday and sold out on Amazon.com within six hours.

Chen said he expects BlackBerry to release a second generation Passport device at some point down the road based on the much better than expected demand. He said the company would be "squeezed a little bit" on availability of the device this quarter.

Chen has moved rapidly to cut costs, sell certain assets and strengthen the company's balance sheet. He said revenue declines are likely near a nadir, with growth expected to begin in calendar 2015 with the sales of new products and services.

Chen said he expects software revenue to double next year from around $250 million in the current fiscal year as the company wins converts to its device management platform, BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 (BES10).

The platform allows companies and government agencies to manage and secure not just BlackBerry devices running on their networks, but also Android, Windows and iOS-based phones and tablets.

BlackBerry said it issued 3.4 million licenses for the BES10 platform in its second quarter, a sharp increase from the previous quarter, and that it may end a promotional program early due to its success. A quarter of the license signups came from rival mobile device managers.

"We're encouraged by the company's growth in enterprise software licensees and aggressive cost-cutting measures," Morningstar analyst Brian Colello said.

The success of Chen's turnaround plan depends to a large degree on whether the company's next BES upgrade helps boost sales. The new BES12 software is set for a mid-November launch.

Quarterly Results

BlackBerry reported a net loss of $207 million, or 39 cents per share, for its second quarter ended August 30. That compared with a year-earlier loss of $965 million, or $1.84 per share.

Revenue was $916 million, versus $1.57 billion a year earlier.

Excluding one-time items such as charges for restructuring, the loss was 2 cents a share. On that basis, analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were expecting a 16-cent loss.

The company said it does not expect its cash balance to drop below $2.5 billion in either the current quarter or the next one. Cash burn has worried some investors

HC asks govt: How is Google paying tax but Facebook not
The Delhi High Court has questioned why Facebook is not paying any service tax when Google is doing so.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has questioned why Facebook is not paying any service tax when Google is doing so and directed the Centre to file a 'better affidavit' on the issue.

"How is Google paying (service tax), but not Facebook? How is Facebook exempted? We are finding it difficult to understand," a bench of justices Badar Durrez Ahmed and Siddharth Mridul said.

The bench also asked whether the government was 'alive' to the issues of sale of data by social medial sites as well as the service of targeted advertisement provided by them.

"Why don't you know all these? Are you alive to these things or is it beyond your comprehension," it asked after advocate Virag Gupta, appearing for former BJP leader K N Govindacharya, raised these issues before the court.

The government, represented by advocate Sanjeev Narula, said that Facebook has no office here while Facebook India has a office in a Special Economic Zone from where it is exporting services and thus, they are exempted from paying service tax.

The bench, however, sought information from the government on what are the remittances being made to Facebook from India and whether the transactions between the website and various Indian companies are in the nature of services.

"Find out what they (transactions) are? Whether they are chargeable and whether the services provided, if any, are by entities in India or from outside. File a better affidavit on the service tax as well as on the social media guidelines," the court said in the pre-lunch proceedings.

It also queried whether the government had come out with an email policy, however, as Narula was not present in court in the post-lunch period, the bench re-notified the matter to October 1 and requested the presence of Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain to assist the court on that date

German courts uphold ban on Uber ride-share service

German courts uphold ban on Uber ride-share service

German courts uphold ban on Uber ride-share service
Courts in Berlin and Hamburg have upheld bans on online transportation service Uber on Friday.

Courts in Berlin and Hamburg upheld bans on online transportation service Uber on Friday, saying the company did not comply with German laws on the carriage of passengers.

US start-up Uber had appealed against the bans in Germany, the latest front in its global battle to win regulatory approval in the face of stiff opposition from taxi services under threat from Uber's business model.

Uber said it had not yet decided whether to appeal against Friday's rulings by administrative courts in Berlin and Hamburg, which said Uber's drivers lacked the commercial licenses to charge passengers for rides.

"Uber is reviewing the court documents in detail before commenting on today's decision but will continue to comply with German law," said a spokesman for Uber, which was recently valued at $18 billion.

He declined to say whether Uber would continue to operate services in the two cities pending any appeal.

Uber has been shadowed by skirmishes with taxi operators and local authorities in many cities where it operates, starting in its home base of San Francisco. It is active in 43 countries and has pulled out of only one city: Vancouver, Canada.

The Berlin and Hamburg rulings go against a previous reprieve given to Uber by a Frankfurt court, which ruled last week there were no grounds for a temporary injunction against its services.

The disparate decisions underline ambivalence in Germany about how to deal with challenges from US technology firms ranging from Google to Amazon to Uber.

The German Economy Ministry said last week the country needed to make room for new, digital business models alongside existing businesses, and called for a hard look at laws governing transport and competition.

The Berlin court said on Friday there was no way of telling whether private drivers using the UberPop mobile phone app, which connects them to potential passengers, were fit to take on the special responsibility of carrying passengers.

It said the Uber Black service, which allows users to summon limousines using an app, did not meet the legal requirement for taxis to return to their service center and so fell between regulations for taxi and rental car services.

"The ban serves to protect the existence of taxi services, their ability to function, in which there is an important public interest," it said in a statement.

The Hamburg court rejected Uber's arguments that the ban violated Uber's professional freedom or European freedom to offer services

Apple says Shellshock no risk to vast majority of Mac users
Apple said the vast majority of Mac computer users are not at risk from the recently identified "Shellshock" computer bug, which security experts warned affects Mac's OS X.
BOSTON: Apple said the vast majority of Mac computer users are not at risk from the recently identified "Shellshock" computer bug, which security experts have warned affect operating systems, including Mac's OS X.

"The vast majority of OS X users are not at risk," Apple spokesman Bill Evans said.

"Shellshock" is a vulnerability in Bash — a piece of software packaged with Mac OS X — which is based on the Unix operating system. The bug does not appear to affect Apple's iOS, which is used on the iPhone and iPad, or machines running Microsoft Windows software.

Security experts disclosed the "Shellshock" vulnerability in Bash, saying that it could enable attackers to gain remote control of vulnerable systems.

Apple ships its computers so they are "safe by default," Evans said, which means that they are not vulnerable to remote attacks unless users configure them for "advanced" Unix services.

"We are working to quickly provide a software update for our advanced UNIX users," he said.

The computer industry is rushing to determine which systems can be remotely compromised by hackers, but there are currently no estimates on the number of vulnerable systems.

Directi founder launches Flock: aims to be the WhatsApp for official purposes

Directi founder launches Flock: aims to be the WhatsApp for official purposes

Flock
Bhavin Turakhia founded Directi, a prominent domain registrar that was acquired by Endurance International earlier this year for a hefty sum. Branching out from that business, one of the things Bhavin focuses on now is Riva- an organization based in the communications space that has today announced the launch of Flock, a free chat service for work and business environments (they also run Ringo). Flock enables quick communication across platforms without IT admin support. Flock is free for unlimited users and usage and is available for iOS, Android, Windows PC, Mac and Linux.
The app is launching globally today but the main focus is going to be on India. “We are passionate about increasing productivity through efficient workplace communications, and are building a set of tools that enable rapid interaction and decision making,” says Bhavin Turakhia, CEO of Riva. Flock sits at the intersection of increasing usage of messaging services and the growing trend of usage of such services for business purposes. Talking of India, more and more people are having a separate WhatsApp group for official purposes but this blurs the line between personal and professional. The team at flock felt that it is necessary to have a bifurcation and thus have launched this messaging app which is dedicated for official purposes.
A user can register via his or her official id and then invite others in the organization to o the same. “Everyone in an organization need not use the app. It is meant for a few progressive groups from where the penetration would start,” says Bhavin. Some of the feature Flock boasts of are:
  • Mobile and Desktop applications
  • File and image sharing within the application
  • Group chats: create temporary or permanent groups for teams or projects
  • Secure encrypted messaging
  • Ability to bring clients into your conversations
  • Auto updated company directory
  • Synced conversations across multiple devices
  • Read and delivery receipts
  • Unlimited chat history
  • Admin interface to manage employee exits
The app is launching today across platforms. Talking about it, Product Manager Ninad Rawal says, “Flock gives employees the opportunity to chat in real time in a single place without mixing their personal and work messages. Public instant messengers were never meant for workplace communication. Flock eliminates any chance of accidentally mixing your work or personal messages, or sending your personal ID to clients.”
Globally, there are players like Hipchat and Campfire which play in a similar domain but Bhavin believes that all of them have their own niche- someone is oriented towards technology folks while someone is inclined towards product managers. Flock wants to be a simple and easy-to-use app that any office goer would find value in. Messaging as a sector has seen a lot of innovation after the rise of Whatsapp and Indian companies like Haptik (a messaging app that allows users to talk with businesses) are covering significant ground. Flock has just launched and with the value proposition and clout it comes in, it surely is one of the startups to look out for.

6 Things your guy doesn't want to hear

6 Things your guy doesn't want to hear

6 Things your guy doesn't want to hear
6 Things your guy doesn't want to hear (Thinkstock photos/Getty Images)

When you are in love, it's important to have and show mutual respect. As a lover, you can afford to take some liberties
.

However, there are few things that are better left unsaid. Irrespective of the fact that your guy is the coolest man on the planet, there are things he might not appreciate hearing from especially you even if it has some truth to it.

Here are a few common statements that most girls make (consciously or unconsciously) that give rise to conflict.

You are a momma's boy:
Even though most men are momma's boys, they hate to hear that especially from you! In some cases, the guy would have liked for some of your qualities that matches with his mom. So, you stating the obvious would be a disaster. Says Shweta Raghuram, a student, "I would hear him say I care the same way as his mom does. But the day I told him he was mom's pet, he hit the roof!" Every person is touchy about his/her mother and he's no exception. Hence, avoid bringing his mom into your conversation with him. It would be suicidal for the relationship if you do so.

Ugh! your friends:
No matter how much you love your guy, there are two things most girls can't stand about men — his love for sports and most importantly the boy gang he loves to hang around with. Irrespective of the fact that his friends are a decent bunch, you still hate to hear him say he enjoys drinking with them. But expressing your concern to him is a big 'no no'. "He would neither want you to point fingers at his friends, nor is he comfortable to let you praise them. It's a dicey situation," says, Sreevalli M. Dating or married, most guys hate to let go of their friends and shift their focus fully on you!

You are always like this:
Remember you fell in love with him for some of his qualities. It was not just looks that drew you to him. "True love is not about loving a perfect person, but learning to live with his imperfections." Remember this cheesy line? The next time you wanna crib about his attitude, reminding yourself of this will save you a lot of trouble. Says Harsha Sharma, a techie, "Would she like it if I said you will never change? Mutual respect helps keep the relationship in good shape."

We need to talk:
Oh no! Not again! This four-word statement is sure to make his temper soar! You realise that either of you saying 'Let's talk' means trouble in paradise! Men hate drama, so if you must talk, get candid and to the point! Says Arunima Chatterjee, "It helps to talk it out when your relationship hits a road block. However, using these words would only mean a threat. Instead, ask him to meet up for coffee and talk your heart out."

My Ex never did this:
No comparisons please! This is the most sensitive topic that's best avoided. He already hates the fact that you previously dated somebody. Now, bringing your Ex into your relationship would mean war! Comparing your guy with your ex will hurt his ego and you know how men are! They will never like it one bit! To save your relationship, let bygones be bygones. For any relationship to work, it's important to appreciate the person for what he is rather then pushing him to change which will ultimately boomerang on you. He might end up saying things like "Why don't you go back to him!" Hence, it's wise to weigh your words before speaking.

You are going bald:
With innumerable chemical-based products of reputed brands available in the market, you are spoilt for choice. Excessive trial and error methods result in disaster. With the kind of lifestyle, protecting your crowning glory has become quite a challenge. More so with men who tend to lose hair too soon and for whom the receding hairlines are very noticeable. That is definitely one of his major worries too. So this is the last thing you would want to tell him
.

The CSK subsidiary will now be able to borrow funds in its own name.

India Cements, the company owner of Chennai Super Kings, has decided demerge the CSK division into a wholly-owned subsidiary. CSK is currently controlled by the sidelined BCCI president and current ICC chairman N Srinivasan. India Cements will however, continue to own the franchise which means the authority in control will not be affected.

In a statement filed with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the company said, "Our company presently owns Chennai Super Kings (CSK) - BCCI-IPL Franchise 20/20 Cricket Tournament Team. We propose to demerge the said CSK Division to a wholly-owned subsidiary of our company. Accordingly, we have included this proposal for consideration of the Board of Directors of our Company at the ensuing meeting on September 26, 2014."

The company had successfully bid for the Chennai franchise in 2008 for $91 million. The amount will be paid over a ten year period. For the June ended quarter this fiscal, the company had posted a loss of Rs 2.96 crore on a net sales of Rs 1,226.24 crore.

CSK are not the first IPL franchise to get demerged. Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore are owned by subsidiaries of Reliance Industries and UB Group respectively.

AP govt enhances age limit for direct recruitment

AP govt enhances age limit for direct recruitment

Andhra Pradesh government today issued an order enhancing the upper age limit for direct recruitment in government service from 34 to 40 years, opening up vast opportunities for unemployed youth.
“As the direct recruitment is being conducted after some gap, the need for enhancing the upper age limit from 34 years to 40 years is necessitated due to inevitability of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, and the consequent fall out, shrinking opportunities to the educated unemployed youth in the state,” state Chief Secretary I Y R Krishna Rao said in the order.
“The opportunities that existed before the bifurcation of combined AP were lost after the bifurcation of the state. Hence the proposal to enhance the age limit from 34 years to 40 years became urgent need of the hour,” Rao said.
The concession in the upper age limit would, however, be not applicable for direct recruitment into uniformed services like police, excise, fire, prisons and forest departments that have set physical standards, he said.
The state government was keen on filling up vacant posts under various categories and the recruiting agencies have been notifying the vacancies from time-to-time.
The concession in the upper age limit to 40 years would be in force till September 30, 2016, during which time the recruiting agencies would notify vacancies under various categories for direct recruitment, the Chief Secretary said.
The erstwhile Kiran Kumar Reddy government had planned to recruit over one lakh personnel under various categories in government departments to fill up vacant posts and also create new jobs in tune with the increasing needs.
However, the process did not move forward because of the state bifurcation.

IITs gear up to teach entrepreneurship

IITs gear up to teach entrepreneurship

image
IITs have always produced a steady stream of entrepreneurs, including those behind celebrated companies such as Flipkart and Snapdeal. Many IITs also have thriving incubation cells that seek to spawn such entrepreneurs. IIT-Madras is even raising a startup fund. Now, finally, IITs are gearing up to teach entrepreneurship in the classroom.

IITs in Delhi, Kharagpur and Hyderabad are planning to bring entrepreneurship at the forefront of their BTech curriculum, and plan to launch minor as well as elective courses on the subject from next year. Other IITs in Madras, Mumbai, Gandhinagar, Kanpur, Patna and Mandi have just taken baby steps to include entrepreneurship in their curriculum. These steps could further whip up a culture of entrepreneurship at the IITs and in the country, entrepreneurs and investors say.

“This will benefit students who are not born into a business family, but yet aspire to run a company,” Sasha Mirchandani, managing partner and founder of Kae Capital and founder of Mumbai Angels, a network of investors, said. “If you have faculty members teaching entrepreneurship, students would be more willing to learn about start-ups and businesses,” he added.

IIT-Delhi recently introduced courses on entrepreneurship. These could evolve into a minor, PV Madhusudan Rao of the mechanical engineering department of IIT-Delhi, said. A minor is a pre-defined course in a focus area whereas an elective is an optional departmental or open-category course. Patna is another IIT thinking about launching a minor in entrepreneurship.

Get ready for more Flipkarts and Snapdeals as IITs gear up to teach entrepreneurship

“With a subject like entrepreneurship being taught by actual entrepreneurs, it will help, support and guide young entrepreneurial ventures in the right direction,” said Ajai Chowdhry, founder of HCL, who also teaches the subject at IIT-Hyderabad and is the chairman at IIT-Patna. “It could play a crucial role in reducing the number of failed start-ups,” he added.

IIT-Kharagpur is considering a micro or thin specialisation in engineering entrepreneurship for its BTech students from next year, said PP Das, head of Rajendra Mishra School of Engineering Entrepreneurship at IIT-Kharagpur. This summer, IIT-Gandhinagar sent a dozen engineering students to attend a course on entrepreneurship at Technion, a technology institute in Israel.

“Since inception, IIT-Gandhinagar has been focusing on entrepreneurship as we do not want to be an institute offering a vanilla degree in BTech. We are offering entrepreneurship as both an elective and minor,” said Sudhir K Jain, director at IIT-Gandhinagar. IIT-Madras is raising a fund for start-ups.

Best career options for introverts

Best career options for introverts

introvertIntroverts by nature are calm and content. They prefer to spend time alone or in small groups, to focus on one task at a time and observe a situation before getting involved. Their career aspirations are very different from the other set of workforce population. Besides, they have some unique qualities that make them a suitable choice for certain careers
Given the key characteristics of introverts, career options such as sales/public relations/customer care may not be apt. In fact, such jobs will only pull down their confidence! Given a chance, a lot of such people could demonstrate their usefulness in roles that don’t entail direct customer dealing but rather activities or work that go in making some really important products and services. Sidharth Agarwal, director, Spectrum Talent Management highlights few such jobs: Introvert
Back-end operations: About more than half the service industry has employees who play a role at the back-end, without directly dealing with customers. Such careers are common in industries which are basically into servicing such as Banking, Insurance, BPO and Healthcare.
Finance & Accounts: Finance as a functional area also has multiple career opportunities for the introverts. Roles such as financial control, fund management, accounting and risk management are widely available across domains with ample growth opportunities.
Research jobs: Today’s new age businesses have a lot of options in this area ranging from business research to bio research to market research and so on. Such jobs are highly rewarding given the increasing usage of research & analytics by organisations, worldwide.
Writing: Writing or authoring is also a very apt career option for introverts. In fact, a lot of writers have been people with shy nature, but highly creative and imaginative minds that incubate mind boggling content.
Manufacturing operations: Jobs at manufacturing organisations that involve roles in the core operations of the business can also be good career fit for people who have the mettle in them to make a difference, but rather silently. With careers ranging from production planning to process excellence/quality, such jobs leverage the skill based strength of professionals who otherwise aren’t outgoing.

Women leaders are more flexible and empowering’

Women leaders are more flexible and empowering’

stk127140rkeBhuvaneshwar Naik, VP-HR, SAP India talks to TimesJobs.com on what makes SAP India the ‘Best Organisation in Women Development’ and the best place to work…
Women constitute a sizable 33 per cent of the workforce at SAP Labs India. What are the initiatives you have taken to empower women employees?
Women in leadership positions at SAP Labs India have grown significantly from 15 per cent to 20 per cent in the last one year. At SAP, we lay a strong emphasis on nurturing early talent, inspiring young women employees to build their careers and also invest in specific confidence building measures and skills. We have an outreach program for all women who have exited the company since 2011 to help understand reasons for exit and to see if we can provide opportunities for them to return. We also launched a pilot ‘Stay in Touch & Maternity Return’ program aimed at minimising post maternity exits.
Your company has been awarded the ‘Best Organisation in Women Development’. What did you do right to win this award?
CMO Asia’s recognition validates our commitment to empowerment of SAP’s women employees. SAP has several initiatives to help women employees in their career and personal life. These include:
Experiential learning – an initiative where eminent women speakers from all walks of life address women employees
Mentorship for Women in Leadership – a platform for women in the mid-management level to connect with successful leaders of the organisation
Business Women’s Network – for building relationships and career development support
SAPlings – an on-premise child care center.
What are the biggest advantages of having women employees in the system? Why ‘gender inclusivity’ is important especially in case of IT/IT Software companies?
Women are epitomes of risk taking. An excellent example is their journey to motherhood, which in itself is an expedition to embrace the unknown and emerge victorious. It is the mother who nurtures, inculcates values, listens and learns through her failures. She knows when to discipline, when to be a friend, when to hold hands, when to allow her child to fall and grow. She builds her network of support, celebrates the success of her children and teaches them to learn from failures. In summary, a mother has all the qualities of a leader – teaching, problem solving, mentoring and the ability to multi-task. Therefore, in an organisational structure a woman leader displays more empathy towards her team, is willing to take calculated risks and is more open to learning from failures. Women leaders are known to provide more flexibility and empowerment to their teams. The emphasis on collaboration and people development is a key strength for female leadership.
How do you help your women employees to maintain a healthy work-life balance?
It is an open secret that engaged and motivated employees are the most productive. Employees will be motivated if they believe that an organisation truly cares for them and that is possible when policies are employee-friendly. The policies should help employees in doing their job better and increase their longevity in the organisation.
Some benefits:
  • Sabbatical policy – We rolled out a sabbatical policy, which allows any employee who has completed five years of service to take a two years’ break and come back to work – female employees can take this option if they want to take a break due to motherhood.
  • Flexi-time – We also allow employees to work part-time. Employees can work for 50, 60 or 80 per cent time. For example, an employee can choose to work for just four hours a day for all five days of the week or for eight hours for just three days in a week, etc. They will be paid according to the option they choose. Female employees who take maternity leave can choose this option till they feel comfortable to get back to office.
  • Maternity Transport – We provide cab services to women employees for their home-office commute during the final stage of their pregnancy.
  • SAP Child care center – SAPlings, an employee driven initiative, is an on-premise child care center that caters to children in the age group of 9 months to 12 years that benefits working mothers who might have intended to discontinue their careers in order to take care of their children.
