Narendra Modi's victory tweet creates record

Narendra Modi's victory tweet creates record

NEW DELHI: On counting day, a tweet by BJP's prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, has broken all records in India becoming the most retweeted tweet ever in the country.

While the National Democratic Alliance is leading by a large margin as per current trends, Modi proclaimed victory with a tweet that says "India has won! भारत की विजय। अच्छे दिन आने वाले हैं।" (India has won! We're approaching the good days). At the time of writing this story, the tweet has been retweeted 39,742 times and favourited 21,691 times.

Twitter India's official account also confirmed that the tweet is indeed the most retweeted tweet ever from India.
It's worth pointing out that Twitter has played a major role in the Indian elections with candidates using it as a medium to reach out to voters and news organizations leveraging its capability to disseminate information and update users. Just a day ago, Twitter India had announced that more than 56 million election-related Tweets were tweeted from January 1 till May 12, in 2014.

Today's victory tweet has been retweeted almost 8 times more compared to Narendra Modi's other highly retweeted tweets. Modi's last highly retweeted tweet had registered 4842 retweets.

Earlier in the year, during the Oscars ceremony, host Ellen DeGeneres managed to set a retweet record with her star-studded selfie that caused a Twitter outage that lasted well over 20 minutes.

The tweet has been retweeted 3,42 million times retweets and favourited 2.02 million times, even breaking a record set by President Barack Obama's tweet with his picture hugging First Lady Michelle Obama after his re-election in 2012. That tweet had got merely 774,931 retweets.

Six online resources for mothers

Six online resources for mothers

Six online resources for mothers
There are online resources to help mothers in their daily lives.

Even exceptional multitaskers could do with a helping hand sometimes. So, here are six online resources for the ladies who work selflessly and tirelessly for you in the background.

World Moms Blog (WMB)

The WMB connects mothers from over 20 countries who blog about their daily experiences at home and at work, covering a wide range of topics, from motherhood and culture, to human rights and social work.

India-based Purnima Ramakrishnan, for instance, has written about a group of pre-teen boys in Chennai who started their own sports club. In fact, this stay-at-home mother was recently invited by the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies to travel to Brazil and cover human stories from the South American country.

Similarly, US native Kim — writing under her nom de plume of Mama Mzungu or "white mama" — blogs about her humanitarian work and the travails of raising two boys in Kisumu, Kenya.

Then there's Susie Newday, a New Yorker working as an oncology nurse in Israel, who shares the ups and downs of working with outpatients in Tel Aviv.

Browsing through this weblog is like walking in their shoes: as a nurse, a teacher, an international lawyer, a social worker. Simply put, this collaborative effort is a great resource that raises public awareness for social causes that are actively championed by these moms.
www.worldmomsblog.com

Circle of Moms

Circle of Moms is an online community of over seven lakh members who exchange tips, how-tos and advice on parenting, single motherhood, education, recipes, relationships, family time and more. There's even a section dedicated on how to keep your sanity (yes, really).

There are communities for working as well as stayat-home mothers; for moms from specific cultural backgrounds, or with children in a particular age group. The list is exhaustive — adoption, spouse fitness , diet, special needs, etc. — and user interaction is high. All you need to do is register and join the communities that interest you.

If needed, you can create your own community and invite others to join and share anecdotes. And it doesn't always have to be about parenting - you can also join hobby groups that could be about a specific television show, music, books, art, and pets.
www.circleofmoms.com

Makers

While Makers is not strictly about mothers, it is about women who have made a mark in arts, politics, music, science and tech, sports, business, education and more.

Here you will find inspirational videos and interesting posts, including the one about fourteen accomplished women — like singer Susan Boyle — who had been diagnosed with autism; Reshma Saujani and her NYbased organisation that teaches girls to code, NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson who calculated the flight path of the first American space mission, etc. You can sign up for the newsletter, create an account to upload your own Maker Story and even create a playlist of your favourite videos.
www.makers.com

Cozi

If there's any organising or planning that has to be done at home, it's usually the mater who does it, but even mommies could use a helping hand.

Cozi is a neat calendar and task-planning app that every family member needs to have installed on their smartphone. Login using a single ID, and each and every member in the group can view a unified calendar, to-do tasks, grocery lists and even journal entries.

When you run out of toiletries, for example, just add items to the list of things to buy and everybody gets to see the update. Entries are colour-coded so you know who has added an item to the app. Import your phone's calendar and everyone in the group will also know your schedules, friend's birthdays and school functions. You can even e-mail the week's agenda to the entire family. Now, nobody will be able to make excuses about forgetting to pay bills, buy groceries, or even attend an uncle's birthday party.

Where: www.cozi.com

Available for: Android, iOS | Free

Life360

If you are in the habit of calling to find out where your kids are, then install Life360 on their smartphones. It's a family locator app that lets you add family members to "circles" to track their whereabouts throughout the day. It also doubles as a navigating tool: Create a temporary circle, and you can add the friends you are going to meet and use the tracker to follow their route to the destination. All through the journey, you can also have one-onone chats with members in the circle.

More importantly, this app also includes an alert button that raises an alarm on all the members' phones, informing them of an emergency with a call, text message and location coordinates - a must-have app for peace of mind.

Where: www.life360.com

Available for: Android, iOS | Free

Myfitnesspal Calorie Counter

Mothers have to juggle hectic schedules and deal with stress all the time. This is why it is extremely important they keep a tab on their own health. With MyFitnessPal Calorie Counter, mommies will be able to maintain a healthy lifestyle and also manage her family's diet regimen.

This app lets you plan your diet and even keeps a track of what you eat. When you sign up, it first asks for details such as your height, current weight, target weight, type of job - and accordingly builds a profile with how many calories you should be consuming each day.

Just add whatever you eat into the Calorie Counter by searching for the meal — including Indian dishes — or ingredients. You can then view the day's summary or your weekly consumption to check your progress.

Don't forget to add your family members into your group so that you can encourage each other to follow a healthier lifestyle
.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier review

Captain America: The Winter Soldier reviewwinter%20soldier.jpg

This second Captain America movie is a big departure in terms of tone from Captain America: The First Avenger, which released three years ago, but as part of Marvel's Phase Two for the Avengers, it fits in with the general theme of things getting a little darker, and a little more serious than the first few movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which seemed to be painted in bright primary colours.
Iron Man 3 was a darker take on Tony Stark dealing with PTSD, while Thor: The Dark World sees both of Thor's parents killed. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a good fit with these movies, and continues to build the mythology of the Marvel Universe and building up a bigger world while telling its own story. (Warning, minor spoilers follow throughout the rest of the review. If you want to go in without anything revealed, come back and read this after watching...)
The film starts stylishly enough with an early scene being a commando raid on a ship that has been taken over by pirates. The commandos are led by Captain America (Chris Evans), but they're carrying assault rifles and shooting their targets down without warning. Even Captain America is shown fighting brutally - in the first few minutes of the movie, he throws a knife through the hand of one of the pirates, pinning him to the wall before knocking him out.
captain america.jpg
The scene sets the tone for the movie and it also highlights something else. Captain America is not a near unstoppable flying brick like Thor or Iron Man, who need superhuman enemies to feel threatened. Steve Rogers is much stronger and faster than other people after the experiments that made him Captain America, but he's still human, and can be threatened.
The movie plays out like a spy thriller set during the Cold War - if you grew up watching such movies in the 90s, then the story beats and lighting are both familiar tropes. This further helps heighten the sense that bad things are going to happen, and while the big reveal - that SHIELD has been compromised by Robert Redford's Secretary Pierce - is telegraphed almost from the start, the exact moment when this is revealed is still shocking.
The crux of the film revolves around three new helicarriers that are to replace the one which was downed during The Avengers; the new ships are armed to the teeth and can kill hostiles through predictive algorithms - "to kill the bad guys before they can even get out of their spider-holes", as Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) puts it. And of course, the initiative is hijacked by Hydra, the terrorist organisation which we first saw in The First Avenger, to kill those individuals that Hydra sees as a threat to their perfect world order.
Complicating things in all this is the Winter Soldier - a legend among mercenaries, an assassin who has been operational for five decades. Anyone who's read the comic books knows the history of the Winter Soldier, but the connection between him and Captain America is also made clear through the story, with flashbacks and a visit to the Captain America exhibit in the Smithsonian Museum, where the scene lingers on a memorial to Bucky Barnes.
When Rogers and the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) are being hunted by SHIELD, they've got to piece together clues and figure out what's going on. They get help from PTSD counsellor Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), who happens to be the pilot of a "Falcon" winged-flying suit. There are some great spy-movie moments in this part of the film, as the plot moves forward.
cap and falcon.jpg
At the same time, the movie still kept its sense of humour. There's one particularly great moment involving the voice controlled computer in Nick Fury's car which instantly defuses a particularly tense moment, and makes this feel like a movie that can exist side by side with Thor and Iron Man.
What makes the film work, despite the conjunction of superhero action and gritty spy movie themes is how tight each scene is. Even the action sequences feel real - when the Winter Soldier and Captain America first face off, there's an amazing sequence of Rogers running straight through an office building, knocking his way past walls, emphasising his superhuman strength. This is followed by another moment from the trailers, where he hurls his shield at the Winter Soldier... who almost casually catches it in his metal hand and hurls it back.
In fact, there's a sense of wonderful physicality to the action - there are a lot of toys and fancy gadgets in play, but the most memorable moments are the scenes of hand to hand combat between the Winter Soldier and Captain America.
However, at 2 hours and 15 minutes, this is a long film, and by the end it starts to overstay its welcome. The final sequence with the helicarriers should have been a powerful climax, but compared to the hand to hand fighting, felt anaemic and dragged out.
black widow.jpg
The actors all largely lived up to the roles they had, though Colbie Smulders' Agent Maria Hill felt a little needless in the movie, and Johansson's Black Widow was stuck with too many sarcastic one liners and not much more beyond beating people up.
For comic book geeks though, the movie delivers, despite perhaps needing a bit of a trim. A lot of the extra material that a broader audience might not care about added a lot of value. A casual throwaway dialogue where Agent Jasper Sitwell (who might be familiar to viewers of Agents of SHIELD on TV) mentioning Stephen Strange in the same breath as Bruce Banner holds up a world of possibility. The Falcon had a small part in this movie, Anthony Mackie was instantly likeable in the role, and will hopefully be used more in future films.
There are tips of the hat, frequent references to Iron Man, and the post-credits scene is linked to Avengers: Age of Ultron. All these little Easter eggs will keep the fans happy, but aside from all that, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a solidly enjoyable action movie, even if it does slow down towards the end.

Thief reviewThief_story.jpg

People have been waiting for the new installment in the Thief franchise for ten years now. That's a long time to wait for a game, and the odds were that fans would be disappointed. After Thief: The Dark Project in 1998 and then Thief 2: The Metal Age in 2000 both launched on PC, Thief: Deadly Shadows came to consoles in 2004. While Thief (2014) isn't as bad as Duke Nukem Forever, it's not quite XCOM: Enemy Unknown either.
Thief is famous for having formalized the tropes of the genre, but in the ten years that have passed, stealth games have evolved a lot. At times the controls and gameplay of the new Thief feel clunky and outdated. Despite this, when Thief feels like its classic origins, it's at its best. Get stuck with the overly scripted sequences and the - thankfully occasional - action sequences, and things start to come unstuck. Stealth games are, at their heart, living puzzles, and the appeal lies in finding out how to solve them. Thief (2014) often leads you by the nose, giving you just one correct way to solve a room.
But the biggest problems with the new Thief were technical - we were reviewing the game with a PS3 copy with the latest game updates, and the game felt like a mess. There's a cutscene almost immediately after a basic tutorial sequence, and the audio stutters and loses sync right away. This was an intermittent problem throughout the game, and it wasn't just cutscenes which were affected. There are occasions in the game itself where things slowed down noticeably, and this is a problem which is being reported even with the next-gen versions of the game.
Thief_AV.jpg
At other times, the audio and video and subtitles all synced perfectly, and at those times you can recognize how needlessly convoluted the storyline is. Thief feels best when our protagonist, the Master Thief Garrett, is sneaking around and picking up everything that isn't nailed down. If the game was about nothing more than a series of heists, it would be perfectly enjoyable. Adding in a clichéd myth arc which could be at home in the Legacy of Kain series is a needless complication. Making things worse is the fact that these major story missions are also usually some of the most heavily scripted, making it nearly impossible to experiment and find your way through the missions.
Thief games play out in the first person, and this one is no exception. It feels well executed, you can take cover and peek, and it forces you to actually focus on the guards and watch them, instead of just keeping them in your peripheral vision while studying the map.
"Pure" sneaking
Thief's world feels like a Dickensian dystopia - at the very beginning, you're trying to steal something called the Primal Stone from Baron Northcrest and you witness a cabal of hooded men trying to perform some occult ceremony. This quickly spirals out of control and in the accident that follows, you're knocked out for one year.
Next, you're being sneaked back into the city and it's under lockdown. Northcrest's guards enforce their curfews with cartoonish villainy, while cheerful fences and an all-knowing Queen of the Beggars form the backdrop against which you're going to break into shops and steal jewelry, sneak around great houses and dodge crews of guards.
You've got your wits, an arsenal of gadgets such as water arrows, fire arrows, "the claw" (which lets you climb up to hard to reach areas, and a power called "focus" which can show you guard's footsteps, highlight points of interest and places you can hide or climb, and also, loot you want to grab.
Thief_city.jpg
Focus doesn't automatically recharge, but you can find or buy poppies; eating them recharges focus, but they're relatively expensive, and you're going to want to spend money to upgrade the ability, making it last longer and increasing the total amount of focus you have available.
The game is divided into a hub - the City - and the various mission areas. Getting around the city is actually pretty enjoyable as you work out the different paths you can take to move without being noticed. The different shops and quest-givers are scattered around the hub, and getting around and finding things to steal along the way is one of the most enjoyable parts of Thief.
Movement is fairly smooth - leaning against railings lets you look over the side, and you can take cover at the tap of a button, to lean around corners and watch the movements of guards from the shadows. The interplay of light and shadow has always been an important part in the series, and Thief (2014) is no exception.
And while most new games are more forgiving, Thief takes the stealth tropes seriously, and makes it clear that you don't want to get spotted. You can defend yourself reasonably well against one opponent. Two and you're in trouble. Garrett isn't an action hero - falling carelessly can seriously damage you, and you want to hide from guards, not fight them.
One interesting power is the "swoop" action - a short dash which can be used to quickly move from one hiding place to another. The swoop feels smooth and powerful, letting you glide sneakily across the maps. It's a superb movement, and you'll find yourself swooping up stairs and across wide open alleys simply because you can.
Too many constraints
As you play through the game, you're going to pick up just about everything that isn't nailed down. At the Thief difficulty level (the second, out of four, not counting the custom difficulty level), the game is fairly generous with loot and the guards are relatively smart, noticing things like a safe left unlocked, but they're not too difficult to work around either.
Takedowns aren't difficult if you plan them well, and getting around the maps feels largely smooth. The controls can be a little rough at times though - there were times where crossing a plank across a street led to a bone cracking fall in the middle of a small troop of guards because you looked off to one side for just a second.
The real appeal of the early Thief games though was the open-ended nature of the gameplay. Avoidance is critical of course; you don't get to choose between robbing someone quietly, or killing everyone and then walking off with the loot.
Thief_hub.jpg
But you were able to pick from different points of entry, working out routes to take on a building, disarming traps and coming up with unconventional solutions to solve problems. In Thief (2014), this is often not the case. The story missions are tightly scripted, and to get you in the right place, you're funneled through tight corridors where you need to play in exactly the way the designers expected, or fail repeatedly.
The rope arrows and the fire arrows are an example of this - there are only a few places where you can use these tools. It's a nice toy that's been given to you, but the floor telegraphs their intentions to make sure that you know what to do. When you're not the one coming up with uses for these tools, it feels no different from having a flashing button pop up and say, "press X to continue". It's a pointless abstraction.
The verdict
The best thing that you can say about Thief (2014) is that it has a strong identity which it keeps true to. The design of the hub city area isn't going to be mistaken for any other game. Even as the story evolves and you get caught up in the occult elements, the tone remains consistent and the feel of Thief feels enjoyable.
Despite the various issues such as the wasted tools and the often constrained design, Thief remains an enjoyable experience. There are parts of the game where everything comes together well. Situations where you will be able to plan your approach with patience, where you will feel masterful as you make your way through the map, disarming traps and finding sneaky hiding places.
At the end of the day though, if you're an old fan of the series, you're going to feel let down by how constrained this version feels, while newcomers will be put off by the many bugs and the unforgiving gameplay which doesn't give you enough freedom to figure things out for yourself.
Price: Rs. 990 (PC), Rs. 2,999 (Xbox 360 and PS3), Rs. 3,499 (PS4)

Today`s Mark Zuckerberg Status...

As the world becomes more complex and governments everywhere struggle, trust in the internet is more important today than ever.

The internet is our shared space. It helps us connect. It spreads opportunity. It enables us to learn. It gives us a voice. It makes us stronger and safer together.

To keep the internet strong, we need to keep it secure. That's why at Facebook we spend a lot of our energy making our services and the whole internet safer and more secure. We encrypt communications, we use secure protocols for traffic, we encourage people to use multiple factors for authentication and we go out of our way to help fix issues we find in other people's services.

The internet works because most people and companies do the same. We work together to create this secure environment and make our shared space even better for the world.

This is why I've been so confused and frustrated by the repeated reports of the behavior of the US government. When our engineers work tirelessly to improve security, we imagine we're protecting you against criminals, not our own government.

The US government should be the champion for the internet, not a threat. They need to be much more transparent about what they're doing, or otherwise people will believe the worst.

I've called President Obama to express my frustration over the damage the government is creating for all of our future. Unfortunately, it seems like it will take a very long time for true full reform.

So it's up to us -- all of us -- to build the internet we want. Together, we can build a space that is greater and a more important part of the world than anything we have today, but is also safe and secure. I'm committed to seeing this happen, and you can count on Facebook to do our part.

Amazon to compensate customers for late Christmas gift deliveries

Amazon to compensate customers for late Christmas gift deliveries

amazon-box-logo-635.jpg
Amazon Thursday said it would give $20 gift cards and pay shipping costs for customers affected by problems at UPS and FedEx that delayed some Christmas package deliveries.
The Amazon pledge came after UPS in particular came under fire for late packages despite vows from retailers to meet a December 25 deadline.
Some customers took to Twitter to voice their displeasure, likening one or both delivery giants to the "Grinch who stole Christmas."
Amazon pointed the finger squarely at the delivery companies. The online retail giant did not give estimates for the number of affected shoppers.
"Amazon fulfillment centers processed and tendered customer orders to delivery carriers on time for holiday delivery," said Amazon spokeswoman Mary Osako. "We are reviewing the performance of the delivery carriers."
Walmart also will provide gift cards to customers who did not receive packages by the promised deadline, the New York Times reported.
Walmart did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
"UPS experienced heavy holiday volume and is making every effort to get packages to their destination as quickly as possible," UPS said on its website. "UPS has resumed normally scheduled service on December 26."
A FedEx spokesperson also reported a "surge" in volume, but said the rise was typical.
"We had minimal service disruptions despite the increase in volumes, and are working directly with customers who may have experienced any delays," said the FedEx spokesperson.
The delivery woes suggested the retail sector is still adjusting to shifting customer behavior with the rise of online shopping.
Analysts had expected brick and mortar shopping to rise just 3-4 percent in 2013, but online shopping to jump 13-14 percent.
More retailers have promised to execute Christmas-deadline deliveries ordered later and later in the season.
Amazon characterized its overall holiday shopping season as the "best ever" in the company's history.
Particularly popular was the "Amazon Prime" service, which provides free two-day shipping services and streaming of some television shows and movies for $79 a year.
Amazon said it signed up more than one million customers for its "Prime" service in the third week of December.

Donkey milk sells at Rs 2,000 per litre!

Donkey milk sells at Rs 2,000 per litre!

Donkey milk sells at Rs 2,000 per litre!
G Lingamma, a woman spotted with a pair of donkeys and surrounded by milk buyers at Sivajipalem, said a group of 20 people had arrived in the district few days ago from Mancherial town in Adilabad district of Telangana along with 15 pairs of donkeys to sell donkey’s milk that is believed to be a remedy for curing asthma and any respiratory problems in newborns.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Donkeys may be the butt of jokes but the nutritional quality of donkey milkseems to be no laughing matter. After all it was said to be the secret of Egyptian princessCleopatra's glowing beauty.

And now, despite the bifurcation trouble brewing in the state, a group of nomads from the north Telangana region have arrived in north coastal Andhra with a herd of donkeys and are doing brisk business selling donkey milk that they claim has medicinal value for newborn babies.

G Lingamma, a woman spotted with a pair of donkeys and surrounded by milk buyers at Sivajipalem in the city on Thursday, said a group of 20 people comprising four families had arrived in the district few days ago from Mancherial town in Adilabad district of Telangana along with 15 pairs of donkeys to sell donkey's milk that is believed to be a remedy for curing asthma and any respiratory problems in newborns.

"We are selling a cup (25 ml) of fresh donkey milk for Rs 200. If anybody wants it in bulk we can sell it for Rs 2000 per litre. Despite the steep prices, people who believe in donkey milk therapy are buying it without trying to bargain. Each one of us is currently able to earn nearly Rs 700-800 per day by selling the milk in the city. We had come here last year too and after completing our tour of Vizag city we will go to Vijayawada," Lingamma said.

Meanwhile, housewife K Satyavathi, who bought 75 ml milk from Lingamma, said they used to buy donkey milk from Salur in Vizianagaram district. "My daughter recently gave birth to a baby boy. I was very happy when I heard that the donkey milk seller is roaming in our street. It' good for my grandson's health as feeding donkey milk to a newborn is nothing but administering good ayurveda medicine," Satyavathi explained.

Concurring with Satyavathi's statement, a senior ayurveda doctor, V Suseela, from Sri Ayurveda Health Centre Srinagar, said that donkey milk is the best medicine for newborns suffering from asthma, tuberculosis and throat infections. Explaining its medicinal value, V Venkateswara Rao, joint director, department of animal husbandry, Visakhapatnam district, said that though donkey milk is similar to human breast milk, it is relatively poor in protein and fat but rich in lactose. "It has been used since ancient times to battle asthma and respiratory allergies and is fed to babies aged between 6-8 months for good health. The milk also enjoys a good demand in metros like Bangalore and Chennai. It also helps skin become smooth and glowing and is used in cosmetic products. It is no coincidence that Cleopatra used to bathe daily in donkey's milk and 700 donkeys were milked everyday just for her," Venkateswara Rao said. According to him, donkey milk is very famous in European countries and cheese made from donkey milk is the world's costliest dairy product
