6 handy tips to ace an interview: Must-dos

Description: 6 handy tips to ace an interview: Must-dos
Saurabh N. Saklani, Co-founder, Exper Executive Education shares 6 must-dos during an interview
i) Understanding the interview objective: Let us first start with what a candidate’s goal and focus must be during an interview. The candidate must understand that the main objective is to help zero down the large pool of candidates to the genuine “potential hires.” Thus, the primary focus/goal of a candidate during an interview is to make it to the short-list.
ii) Read up company’s history: Candidates must be prepared to respond to questions that help the interviewer assess whether the candidate will be a good fit in the company’s culture and value systems etc. Thus, the candidate must read about the company’s history, vision, values, role models and stalwarts over the years to showcase a deep understanding of the organisation.
iii) Know to demonstrate skills: Candidates must be equipped to respond to questions that help the interviewer assess whether the candidate exhibits the skills, attitudes, and behaviors needed in the company’s current growth context.
iv) Networking: Candidates must make an effort to find and speak to people that work in the organisation as that would give a true ‘feel’ for the actual expectations at work. Social media has made this very easy and speaking to someone that works for the company is a great way to build a ‘sense’ of the actual work environment.
v) Align with company’s culture: The candidate must exhibit alignment with the organisation’s needs and expectations from the role. This must come from one’s life/work stories that highlight the ‘behavioral fit-elements’ like passion, commitment, achievement orientation, loyalty etc.
vi) Asking questions: Candidate must not shy away from asking questions about the organisation because s/he must also determine whether the company’s culture and work environment is a good fit for them! The fitment process must go both ways to avoid future anxiety, disappointments, frustrations, and stress.
