Android 4.4 KitKat to release in October: Nestle

Android 4.4 KitKat to release in October: Nestle

android-4.4-kitkat-1-big.jpg

It looks like Android's latest iteration will see the light of day in October, as Nestle has revealed the first news about the launch of Android 4.4 KitKat on Facebook. While replying to a user who asked "When Android 4.4 KitKat will be available", Nestle's German KitKat Facebook handle replied "Android 4.4 KitKat is available from October" (Google translation).
While this might not be an official confirmation about Android 4.4 KitKat's release, at least the German Nestle Facebook handle was kind enough to confirm that it is coming next month.
Earlier this month, the search engine giant which has been known for nicknaming its Android mobile operating systems for smartphones and tablets after desserts, had for the first time announced a candy brand name for the version 4.4. However, Google made no mention of when the Android 4.4 update would rollout.
The search giant has been in news ever since it announced the next iteration of its mobile operating system, with the Nexus 4 successor, which is expected to be the platform lead device for Android 4.4 jelly, making multiple appearances on the Internet via FCC filing and image leaks.
In the official promotional video of the KitKat announcement released by Google, a person was seen holding up a phone which came with a Nexus logo at the back, very identical to the Nexus 7 (2013). The back of the mysterious phone had a matte finish and included a large camera lens which has not been seen on any Nexus device, yet.
Recently, the alleged Nexus 4 successor was again spotted in new live images and a video. The purported pre-production unit of the next Nexus smartphone revealed the front and rear panels. It is rumoured that the next Nexus smartphone would run Android 4.4 KitKat OS and both are expected to be launched at the same event.

Google makes Quickoffice app free for Android and iOS

Google makes Quickoffice app free for Android and iOS

quickoffice-free.jpg

Google has made Quickoffice mobile app free for both Android and iOS users, following Apple's announcement to offer its iWork apps, Pages, Numbers and Keynote free to people who buy new iOS devices.

The Quickoffice suite allows viewing, editing and creation of Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents, and allows users to store them on Google Drive, Google's cloud storage solution.

It's interesting to note that after acquiring Quickoffice in June 2012, Google had made the iPad version of the app free for its Google Apps for Business customers in December. Earlier this year, it extended the same perk to Android users and made the iPad app compatible with the iPhone.

However, starting today all iOS and Android users will be able to download and use Quickoffice, free of charge. Google has also announced that if users sign in to their Google Account from the new Quickoffice app for Android or iOS by September 26, 2013, they'll get an extra 10GB of Google Drive storage for two years, which will be added to their account in the next few weeks.

It's interesting to see mobile Office suites taking each other on. With the announcement of the new iPhones, Apple had made its iWork suite which also lets users create, edit and view presentations, documents and spreadsheets, free for new users. The apps are offered when users activate their new iPhones or iPads running iOS 7. The iWork apps are also integrated with iCloud, Apple's own cloud storage and sync solution.

Ironically, Microsoft's Office apps, which were launched for both Android and iPhone are offered as a free download but an Office 365 subscription is required to use them. The apps also offer the ability to sync documents to Microsoft's Skydrive cloud service. It's worth pointing out that the apps don't work on the Apple iPad or Android tablets in the interest of Windows tablets which showcase Office as one of their key USPs.

LA businessman hires homeless people to queue up overnight for new iPhones, scuffles ensue

LA businessman hires homeless people to queue up overnight for new iPhones, scuffles ensue

iphone-5s-635.jpg

Two people were arrested Friday in scuffles outside an Apple store in California, as fans scrambled to get their hands on the new iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C handsets.

Tempers flared after a group of homeless people were bussed in by an enterprising businessman to buy more of the coveted phones, but were then not paid for queuing up all night.

A fight broke out shortly before 7:30 a.m., and officers struggled to break up the ruckus, said police spokesman Jason Clawson in Pasadena, north of downtown Los Angeles.

Two men were cited for "public fighting," he said. Neither of them was hurt.

Tensions were fueled by a ruse in which some 70-80 homeless people were bussed in from downtown LA, about 10 miles (16 km) away, to spend the night waiting in line outside the Pasadena store, said Clawson.

But some began fighting because they said they weren't getting paid enough, the police spokesman told the LA Times.

One of them, Dominoe Moody, said he was promised $40 to stand in line and buy an iPhone, after being bussed from a homeless hostel with several van-loads of people, the newspaper reported.

The 43-year-old said he wasn't paid because the man was taken away by police. "It didn't go right. I stood out here all night," he told the newspaper, adding that he had no way to get home.

The man behind the ruse, who did not give his name, denied he was doing anything illegal.

"The phones are for me. I have a company that resells the phones for a higher profit," he told reporters. "It's not against the law to buy them, I'm buying them at full retail price," he added, saying he sold them overseas for more than $1,000 each.

Vivian Fields, 49, told the LA Times: "They need to bring him back ... to pick up the people that he brought here," adding: "We have no way to get home."

Police were not investigating the incident, Clawson said, explaining: "It's not a police issue. It's a business issue."

Nokia cannot use mobile brand post-Microsoft deal until 2016

Nokia cannot use mobile brand post-Microsoft deal until 2016

ballmer-and-elop-635.jpg

After signing a pact to sell its handset business to Microsoft, Finnish phone giant Nokia can neither license the 'Nokia' brand for use in connection with mobile device sales nor use the brand on its own mobile devices for a specific period."Microsoft has also agreed to a 10-year license arrangement with Nokia to use the Nokia brand on current and subsequently developed Mobile Phones based on the Series 30 and Series 40 operating systems," Nokia said in a recent US filing.
Nokia, which will be left with only its telecom equipment, location and patent development businesses, would have the right to continue and maintain the Nokia brand, except for certain period as per the agreement.
After the closing of the deal "Nokia would be restricted from licensing the Nokia brand for use in connection with mobile device sales for 30 months and from using the Nokia brand on Nokia's own mobile devices until December 31, 2015," it said.
The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014, subject to approval by Nokia shareholders, regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.
As per telecom magazine Voice&Data, Nokia mobile phones have a 27.2 percent market share in India at the end of the Financial Year 2012-13.
Nokia will seek its shareholders' approval on November 19 this year to the USD 7.2 billion deal to sell its devices and services business to US software giant Microsoft. If shareholders of Nokia disapprove the deal, then it will have to pay about USD 51 million as damages to Microsoft.
In case an alternate proposal is placed before Nokia's shareholders which gets approved, then the Finnish company will have pay less amount as damage to Microsoft.

Microsoft Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets unveiled

Microsoft Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets unveiled

microsoft-surface2.jpg

Microsoft introduced new Surface tablets, including a professional model that allows people to use it more like a laptop or a desktop computer.

The Redmond, Wash. company is trying to boost its tablet business as sales of traditional desktop and laptop computers decline.

The Surface Pro 2, unveiled at an event in New York, is targeted at professionals who want the full power of a laptop in a tablet-style device. The kickstand built into the device is redesigned to make it easier to use on laps. In the past, it worked best on a flat surface such as a table.

Microsoft says the Pro 2 also offers a 75 percent improvement in battery life over the previous model. There's also a new cover accessory that extends battery life even further. An optional docking station allows the Pro 2 to be used like a laptop.

A cheaper model, Surface 2, offers a better screen and other improvements over last year's Surface RT.

The Surface 2 starts at $449, and the Surface Pro 2 at $899. It is available starting on Oct. 22 in the U.S. and other markets.

Microsoft plans to release an update to its Windows 8 operating system on Oct. 17. Among other things, Windows 8.1 will be usable on smaller touch screens, which have become popular because they are cheaper and easier to carry. The previous version of Windows 8 was limited to tablets with 10-inch to 12-inch screens.

The screen on both new Surface models remains at 10.6 inches, measured diagonally. Microsoft didn't announce smaller Surface models.

The redesigned Surface tablets come at a time of transition for Microsoft. At a time when personal computer sales are falling, the software giant is trying to become a more diversified software and mobile devices company. Earlier this month, Microsoft struck a deal to acquire Nokia's handset and services business for $7.2 billion. The company is also searching for a new CEO to replace Steven A. Ballmer, who announced last month that he plans to retire within the next year.

Microsoft has manufactured devices before, such as its Xbox gaming console. In selling the Surface, the company became a competitor to its many manufacturing partners, which rely on its Windows operating system to power their machines.

Microsoft began selling Surface tablets last October, but sales have been slow. The company shipped about a million tablets in the first three months of 2013, according to research firm IDC. That includes about 260,000 of the slimmed-down RT version of Surface and 750,000 of the Pro version, which is compatible with older Windows programs. The shipments gave Microsoft a meager 2 percent share of the tablet market in the first quarter. By the second quarter, Microsoft tablets dropped out of IDC's Top 5.

Microsoft absorbed a $900 million charge in the April-June period to account for its expected losses from the Surface RT after it slashed prices to stimulate demand. The $150 cut brought the price of the Surface RT with 32 gigabytes of memory to $349. The Surface has a 10.1-inch screen measured diagonally. The RT version is 1.5 pounds. The Pro version is 2 pounds and starts at $799, $100 less than it was at launch.

Apple announces sales of 9 million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c units on launch weekend

Apple announces sales of 9 million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c units on launch weekend

apple-two-new-iphones-635.jpg

Apple has announced that it has sold a record-breaking nine million new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models, just three days after the launch of the new generation of iPhone devices on September 20.

However, Apple has not given a device or region-specific breakup of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c device sales. It's worth pointing out that pre-orders for the iPhone 5c started on September 13, and so this number is also inclusive of iPhone 5c pre-orders.

Contrast this to iPhone 5's first weekend sales of five million units in 2012 and the iPhone 4S' sales of four million units in 2011. These sales numbers did not include China, which is a major market. Very importantly, to better the iPhone 5s and 5c sales numbers in perspective, note that this year's numbers also include the Chinese market. China was included in the first phase of the iPhone rollout for the first time, ever.

Apple has also revealed that more than 200 million iOS devices are now running the completely redesigned iOS 7, making it the fastest software upgrade in history. Apple recently announced it expects to sell 700 million iOS devices by next month.

Both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c are available in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, the UK and the US.

Apple admits that demand for the iPhone 5s has exceeded the initial supply, and many online orders are scheduled to be shipped in the coming weeks.

"This is our best iPhone launch yet--more than nine million new iPhones sold--a new record for first weekend sales," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we've sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone's patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone."

Apple unveiled the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on September 10. The iPhone 5c sports a brand new hard-coated polycarbonate casing but features almost the same internals as the iPhone 5, including the same A6 chip, 4-inch Retina display with a resolution of 640x1136 pixels and an 8-megapixel rear camera. However, it comes with a bigger battery, a better front-facing camera and enhanced 4G/ LTE support.

The iPhone 5s also comes with a number of improvements including a new A7 chip that supports 64-bit computing, a faster graphics processor, M7 co-processor for tracking data from the different sensors of the phone, a fingerprint scanner on its Home button, and a much improved camera with support for a burst mode and slow motion video capture, in addition to a dual-LED flash.

Both iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s will ship with iOS 7, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system.

BlackBerry agrees to $4.7 billion buyout by Fairfax-led consortium

BlackBerry agrees to $4.7 billion buyout by Fairfax-led consortium

blakberry-woman-635.jpg

BlackBerry announced Monday it has agreed to a $4.7 billion buyout by a consortium of investors who plan to take the struggling Canadian smartphone maker private.

The company said in a statement that it has "signed a letter of intent agreement under which a consortium to be led by Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited has offered to acquire the company subject to due diligence."

Fairfax, a Canadian firm headed by billionaire Prem Watsa, is already BlackBerry's largest shareholder with approximately 10 percent of its shares. Watsa resigned from BlackBerry's board when it announced in August its intentions to search for a suitor.

Under the proposed deal the consortium would offer $9 for each outstanding share, and Fairfax would contribute its own shares in the transaction.

BlackBerry said its board of directors support the plan.

A firm deal, once due diligence is completed, is expected to be announced by November 4. It hinges also on the consortium obtaining financing.

BlackBerry said it would continue a search for a possibly better suitor in the interim.

Markets halted trading of BlackBerry just prior to its announcement. Its stock price was down six percent to $8.23.

Analysts reacted with measured optimism.

"This is probably the best possible outcome of several unattractive options for BlackBerry," said analyst Jack Gold of J Gold Associates.

While BlackBerry helped create a culture of mobile users who were glued to the company's smartphones, many of those customers have since moved to Apple or other smartphone makers such as Samsung, mainly using Android.

On Friday, the company announced it was laying off 4,500 staff or one-third of its global workforce after a dismal launch of new smartphones earlier this year that were meant to revive BlackBerry.

It also said it expected to post a nearly $1 billion loss in the second quarter due to writedowns linked to poor sales of its Z10 smartphone, a device aimed specifically at competing against Apple and Android devices.

No placement for slowdown in engineering: Hirings in non-IIT engg colleges dispel fears of dull season

No placement for slowdown in engineering: Hirings in non-IIT engg colleges dispel fears of dull season

Description: No placement for slowdown in engineering: Hirings in non-IIT engg colleges dispel fears of dull season
K Gopi Krishna is this year’s poster boy at National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal.
Social networking site Facebook offered the computer science student an annual salary of $135,000 (approximately Rs 84.6 lakh) during the ongoing placements – a record for the institute. Last year, the highest offer at the institute – at $100,000 (then Rs 60 lakh) – came from Microsoft.
The story is similar across other leading non-IIT engineering institutes in the country, where initial apprehensions of a dull placement season are slowly being put to rest. Campus hiring for most engineering colleges begin in mid-August while at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) it begins in December.
“There were apprehensions before the placements started, but so far, the situation for the Class of 2014 is good. We have been able to attract many companies, and 300 of 850 students have already been placed,” said Rajeev Tripathi, professor-in-charge, department of training and placement, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), Allahabad.
The highest salary at MNNIT so far is 20 lakh from web services firm Directi, but results from the final round of selection by Google are awaited. The firm had offered Rs 56 lakh last year. Facebook is expected in the next semester. The company had made an offer of $262,500 (then Rs 1.34 crore) two years ago.
Back at NIT Warangal, technology giant Microsoft will snag nine of Krishna’s batchmates this year, and those posted at headquarters will get a salary of $120,000 (Rs 75 lakh), said a placement team member who didn’t want to be named. Search giant Google is yet to make its final selection, but the salary offered is $100,000 (around Rs 63 lakh), sweetened by a 15% bonus and 125 company stock units.
“The numbers as of now are good, but there are signs of slowdown since companies are hiring only 60-70% of the number of students hired last year,” said the placement team member cited earlier.
NIT Warangal has a total of 1,200 students to place this year. Delhi Technological University computer science student Himanshu Jindal got an offer of Rs 93 lakh from Google while US-based software company Epic reportedly made the second-best offer of Rs 70 lakh and selected 11 students.
Meanwhile, at Jadavpur University in Kolkata, Japanese firm Works Applications has come calling with a Rs 35 lakh offer. Although the company picked up only one student last year at a similar package, this time it’s expected to hire more. Amazon has offered seven students a salary of Rs 17 lakh each this year while Yahoo! will hire students for Rs 14-15 lakh this year.
“Product companies have made good offers, but the manufacturing segment is slow on hiring,” said Siddharth Bhattacharya, placement head for Jadavpur University. Mahindra and Mahindra, HSBC, Alpha Laval, Bajaj are some of the other firms that visited the college. Of the 800 students, 130 have been placed across sectors.
At NIT Surathkal, about onethird of the 700 students have been placed and 50-60 companies have visited the campus, including DE Shaw, Oracle, SAP Labs, IBM, TCS and Adobe. The highest domestic offer till date is Rs28 lakh from Goldman Sachs. The institute is expecting international offers from the likes of Microsoft.
“Computer science and IT students have been doing particularly well, though percentage of offers in core engineering courses is relatively lower,” said R Shivashankar, department of training and placement, NIT Surathkal. Last year, the highest offer was $120,000 from Microsoft, and there were four to five international offers.
Some institutes have had a better experience than others, with offers pouring in. Vellore Institute of Technology’s (VIT) 2,000 students had approximately two offers each at the end of the first placement session in July-end. Last year, 3,603 jobs were offered to students at the end of first round while this time around there were 3,934 offers.
Accenture has picked 1,688, Wipro 1,162 and Cognizant 1,084 students from the campus.Deloitte, Musigma and Schneider Electric have made offers to 60, 57 and 31 students, respectively. DE Shaw, Flipkart and eBay have all offered a salary of more than Rs11 lakh.
DE Shaw made offers of Rs14 lakh to students of Bangalore-based RV College of Engineering, according to the placement team. It may not be a season of plenty yet, but it does look promising, despite the sluggish economy.

‘Candidates showing strong track record of advanced outcomes impress me’

Interview of the Day: ‘Candidates showing strong track record of advanced outcomes impress me’
Description: Interview of the Day: ‘Candidates showing strong track record of advanced outcomes impress me’
Dippak Khurana, CEO & Co-Founder, Vserv.mobi
What is the job scenario like in mobile advertising sector? How has it changed over the years?
With brands evaluating diverse strategies to attract and retain discerning consumers of the new connected world, Mobile Advertising has witnessed immense growth in the last couple of years. Analyst firm, Gartner has predicted that global revenue from this sector will reach $24.5 billion by 2016. This indicates the potential of the industry, highlighting that the demand for talent will only continue to grow.
The world is increasingly becoming tech-savvy with consumers spending more time on their personal devices (tablets, smartphones etc.). This rise of mobile viewing is a key factor fueling growth of the sector, leading to a higher demand for talent to continue this momentum. As a result, agencies now need to make a clear shift in their strategies which will give rise to better careers in the mobile ad space.
You have been a part of several teams that pioneered several landmark projects. How was the experience like?
I have always been involved in building new businesses. My association with the digital space started almost one and a half decade ago, and I initially worked very closely with companies who were establishing themselves in the newly found Internet medium. After a few solid years there, I moved to the mobile sector as I realised that it will be a key driver in shaping the future of digital globally. I co-founded Vserv.mobi in 2010. Over the last twenty years, I have been able to leverage my expertise to build business models for new products/services for the digital ecosystem and the experience has been extremely enriching.
What were some of the main challenges you faced while setting up this venture?
While every business has challenges, we believe that a strong bonded team can navigate through them. Hence, we have focused on building the right team.
  • Finding the right talent in a young industry and convincing them to join a fledgling start-up
  • Raising Angel capital can be a difficult task in emerging markets like India
  • Continued conviction to scale up our new venture, and innovate in the competitive mobile advertising space
What are the best practices you employ to hire, engage, and retain talent?
We work in a globalised era and cannot escape imbibing the best practices from other countries and cultures. As a result, I have inculcated the best practices from US organisations in my style of working and at Vserv. US corporations tend to be innovative, farsighted and their leaders are risk takers. They are never complacent, always meticulous and this aids in building a successful organisation.
What are the skills you look for in a prospective candidate? (Both technical and soft skills)
Candidates that are able to show a strong track record of advanced outcomes impress me the most. This shows they are hungry not just to win, but win by a margin. The clarity of his/her skills is another attribute that I look for. Passion for the mobile and digital business is also a key trait I would look for. In addition, strong domain expertise in various areas such as product management/ development, strong analytical skills and business development are some other factors which would be deciding factors during recruitment.
What are some of the key workforce related challenges you face? How do you tackle them?
The biggest challenge in terms of workforce is that most individuals benchmark good outcomes, and not outstanding outcomes. So they need to be constantly driven to raise the bar. Another challenge is hiring the right talent which possess a strong desire to contribute to the growing mobile ecosystem. Other includes finding and retaining individuals who have the ability to constantly learn and innovate and remain nimble-footed while adapting to the dynamic business environment

Foods that don't let you slim down

Foods that don't let you slim down

Foods that don't let you slim down
Foods that stop you from slimming down.

Your diet staples could be sabotaging your efforts to slim down and denying you vitamins and minerals

Those low-fat, low-taste alternatives passed off as 'health foods' could, in fact, be costing you your health. It's easy to be misled with labels such as 'high fiber', and 'natural'. In reality, many so called 'healthy' foods contain high levels of fat, sugar and salt. Reading the ingredient list and nutrition facts column could help you choose the right items. Here's a round up of the things you consider good that may actually be bad:

Honey
You think honey is healthier and more natural than sugar? You are wrong. Both contain similarly high levels of glucose. Because honey is denser, one tablespoon actually contains more calories than the same sized spoonful of granulated sugar. Eat too much honey and you'll gain just as much weight as you will gorging on other sweet stuff.

Low-fat salad dressing
Scientists at Iowa State University, US, have found that low-fat dressing cancels out the goodness in salad. Conversely, using olive oil, or a little butter, boosted vitamin intake because fat helps your body absorb nutrients from vegetables more efficiently.

Breakfast cereals
Studies show that people who eat cereal for breakfast tend to be slimmer than those who don't — but only if they're opting for a healthy brand. Choose the wrong box and you may as well start your day with a slice of cake, as some cereals are high in sugar and fat. The main ones to watch out for are your flavoured, chocolate and sugar-coated or frosted kids' ones. So always read the label. Not that you need to skip the cereal aisle altogether — experts agree that tucking into a bowl of porridge or any other wholegrain cereal is actually healthy. Naturally low in calories and high in fibre, these will help keep you fuller for longer and ward off midmorning snacking.

Skimmed milk
Although guzzling whole milk has been demonised as a health no-no in recent years, research shows that it could be a better choice than its skimmed counterpart.

Whole milk only contains around 4 per cent fat per 100ml as opposed to the 20 per cent plus deemed to be in the 'high fat' category. Skimmed milk contains 0.1 per cent fat. So switching from whole to skimmed milk won't make a huge difference.

Skimmed milk is less nutritious because cream contains fatsoluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Research reveals that full-fat milk boosts metabolism and help you burn more calories, while also lowering the risk of heart disease.

Raw vegetables
Cooking is believed to kill the vitamins and minerals, but studies have found the opposite. While cooking may destroy some (but not all) vitamin C, the process boosts the uptake of disease-fighting nutrients — antioxidants. A 2008 study found that vegetables such as carrots, spinach, mushrooms, asparagus, cabbage and peppers supply more antioxidants when cooked than when eaten raw. This is because cooking breaks down vegetables' thick cell walls, making it easier for the body to absorb the nutrients they contain. Steaming is best, then gentle boiling. Frying preserves the least vitamins and minerals.

Diet drinks
They seem like a straightforward way for soft drink lovers to cut calories but experts think diet drinks could actually scupper weight loss. While the artificial sweeteners in such drinks can convince the taste buds they're consuming sugar, the brain can't be tricked so easily. When it's denied the calories it's expecting, your body goes on a calorie hunt, making you feel hungry and eat more. Which is why consuming diet drinks can make people more likely to pile on weight, than reduce it.

MELBOURNE: Unbreakable rubber-like smartphones, rollable tablets and functional clothing have come closer to reality, thanks to new breakthrough research by scientists including one of Indian-origin.

Researchers from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) RMIT University have developed a new method to transfer electronics with versatile functionality, which are usually made on rigid silicon, onto a flexible surface.

The ability of micro and nano-electronic devices to sense, insulate or generate energy is controlled by thin, transparent nanolayers of oxide materials, often much thinner than 1/100th of a human hair.

These oxide materials are brittle and their high processing temperatures - often in excess of 300 degrees Celsius - have until now prevented their incorporation in flexible electronic devices.

Lead author, Philipp Gutruf, said the new process could unleash the potential of fully functional flexible electronics, while providing a new way for the materials to mesh together.

"We have discovered a micro-tectonic effect, where microscale plates of oxide materials slide over each other, like geological plates, to relieve stress and retain electrical conductivity," he said.

"The novel method we have developed overcomes the challenges of incorporating oxide materials in bendable electronic devices, paving the way for bendable consumer electronics and other exciting applications," said Gutruf.

Supervisor and co-leader of the research group, Dr Madhu Bhaskaran, said the new approach used two popular materials - transparent conductive indium tin oxide and rubber-like silicone which is also biocompatible.

"The ability to combine any functional oxide with this biocompatible material creates the potential for biomedical devices to monitor or stimulate nerve cells and organs. This is in addition to the immediate potential for consumer electronics applications in flexible displays, solar cells, and energy harvesters," said Bhaskaran.

The study was published in the journal Asia Materials.
