Pravin Rao, the new star at Infosys
The 27-year veteran is now a president, and gets the additional responsibilities of global delivery and service innovation.
BANGALORE: U B Pravin Rao is the new star in the Infosys pecking order. He was a senior vice president and global head of retail, consumer packaged goods, logistics and life sciences, and director of the Infosys Leadership Institute. The 27-year Infy veteran now becomes president, and gets the additional responsibilities of global delivery and service innovation, as also the business portfolios of resources & utilities, services, growth markets, cloud & mobility, and quality & productivity.
Former Infocians who have worked with him describe him as a people's person. "He's always very calm, quiet, known for delegating initiatives to his subordinates. He was a pleasure to work with. Since he was based in India, he was intimately connected to the operations side and was invariably part of committees involving HR. He was the best voice that business had on HR issues," said Subhash Dhar, who was head of innovation at Infosys when he quit in 2011.
Swami Swaminathan, who last year retired from Infosys when he was head of the BPO business, said, "Pravin is a people's leader. He has built the retail practice ground up and demonstrated significant engagements with retail clients globally."
Rao, 52, holds a degree in electrical engineering from Bangalore University. He joined Infosys after college, in 1986. Over the years he has held a number of senior leadership roles such as head of infrastructure management services and delivery head for Europe.
B G Srinivas, the other newly appointed president, is a board member and has long been considered a contender to the CEO position in Infosys. He was the head of Europe, global head of financial services and insurance unit, and chairman of Infosys Lodestone. With Friday's elevation, he also becomes in charge of global markets, and will have the heads of manufacturing, engineering services, energy & communications, Infosys Public Services, strategic global sourcing, marketing and alliances reporting to him.
Srinivas, 52, holds a degree in mechanical engineering from Bangalore University. He joined Infosys in 1999, after 14 years at ABB.
Srinivas, who lives in London, is said to have played a key role in setting up the enterprise solutions unit, pioneering the global delivery model for high value-added services like consulting-led package implementation. "This unit went on to become the company's largest horizontal unit, contributing 21% of revenue," says the company website. Dhar described the choice of Srinivas and Rao for the president's post as "great". "Both command the respect of people and both have experience running large business units," he said
