Karbonn, one of the leading domestic mobile brands, announced its intentions to stay on top of smartphone technology trends in 2014, and identified them in a press release on Thursday, quoting the company's executive director, Shashin Devsare.

Devsare said in the statement: "It will be the perfect blend of technology and consumer orientation that will take us to the next leap of our mission of massifying smart devices in India. The net positive estimates for the Indian mobile market is encouraging Karbonn to focus heavily on the Indian mobile market with its retinue of customer-centric products & services, and with a more streamlined and consumer-oriented Karbonn 'Smart' mobile eco-system. The year 2014 is ready to witness the greatest of smart device tech trends and will ensure the evolution and growth of a great mobile ecosystem in 2014."

The key technology trends identified by Karbonn were based on the app ecosystem, biometric identification, connectivity, data usage, compute and graphics processing, imaging, wearable and flexible technology, high-resolution displays, open-source operating systems, and carrier technology.
Some of the most notable trends to be identified were the processor and camera. According to Karbonn, the former will reach speeds between 2.5GHz and 3GHz, at a lower price points. Octa-cores will also apparently become more common, promising similar performance at a lower energy consumption.
As for the camera, Karbonn's forecast of trends say 16-megapixel cameras will become more mainstream, as well as larger sensor sizes, and the inclusion of optical image stabilisation and better HDR.
You can see Karbonn's mobile technology trend forecasts for 2014 in the table below, side by side with the company's corresponding identified trend in 2013:
Trends
2013
2014
1
App ecosystem
The year witnessed an upsurge in generic applications ranging from gaming, basic entertainment, utilities & content consumption apps
2014 is all set to experience a new evolution of the app ecosystem with specific/targeted solutions.
From movie rental/purchase, e-books download, Live TV, apps with improved location targeting and supporting personalization will create new vistas of smart device communication.
Apps for specific needs will transform the phone into self styled boutique catering to every sector of the society and enhancing everyday life
2
Smartphone as an identification module
The fingerprint sensor is introduced on one smartphone but has paved the way for the technology to mushroom
Smart devices equipped with new hi-tech sensors and cameras to enable fingerprint recognition and smart eye-tracking will enable our body to become the new identity/ password for transactions, check-ins, smart inputs etc.
3
Better Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity
Existing technology penetration v.i.z Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n protocols & Bluetooth Classic
Wi-Fi 802.11ac to be the New Norm with better connectivity even in thin network environment and lower power consumption. Bluetooth Smart Ready, or generation 4.0 will be available with same 100-metre range and speed (26Mbps) as Bluetooth 3.0 but with higher energy efficiency
4
Internet usage
130 million mobile Internet users. Total 210 million Internet users (IAMAI - IMRB International study)
Mobile Internet users in the country will grow to 200 million creating a huge demand for new and affordable communication solutions.
2014 will Internet users grow past 250 million (expected)
5
Processing capabilities
An explosion of dual-cores and quad-cores with processing speeds ranging from 1.5GHz to 2.2GHz
Octa-cores and optimized processors with 64 bit architecture will offer better multitasking capability and high energy efficiency.
Miniaturization of chips leads to faster and better technology which could be used effectively for high end processes bridging the deficit between personal computers and phones.
Clock speeds up to 2.5GHz-3GHz
6
Camera
8-megapixel cameras become common
Camera being the key aspiration factor will witness large sensor size and greater than 16-megapixel image resolutions with optical image stabilization technology.
Better software optimization with lower shutter-lag and better HDR modes will redefine the camera experience
7
Wearable and flexible technology
Wrist wearable technology- working as a pair with a smart device for full functionality
Advent of devices with complete smart device delivery and the ability to integrate with human lifestyles will be one important aspect of the mobility evolution
8
Screens
2013 saw a lot of changes in screens and has become one of the key preferences for opting smart devices. HD, FHD (1,920x1,080 resolution) with up to 400ppi and introduction of Passive 3D has transformed the smartphone screens
2014 to experience Ultra HD (3,840x2,160 resolution) and WQHD (2,560x1,440 resolution) with pixel density of 500 ppi and more.
Active 3D Technology will be the next buzz.
9
Operating system
With over 90 percent smartphone market share in India, Android has become the most dominant player in the OS market
New operating systems based on open source model will emerge strongly.
Existing operating systems: Updates will support multitasking with ease, seamless integration with multiple devices for entertainment & productivity.
10
Carrier technology
Handsets with Multi-Band and dual-SIM technology with 3G+2G capabilities gained the smartphone user's attention
Handsets with multi-mode, multi-band LTE trans receivers supporting 4G, 3G and 2G technologies to enhance the user experience
