Bollywood takes to Twitter, Facebook to promote films

Bollywood takes to Twitter, Facebook to promote films

Bollywood takes to Twitter, Facebook to promote films

NEW DELHI: Movie companies are betting on Twitter and Facebook to woo audiences and rake in the numbers for their films. Last week, the cast of 'Happy New Year' — Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood and Boman Irani — changed their names on Twitter to their movie names. Actress Deepika Padukone changed her name to Finding Fanny for her upcoming movie. Twitter says Bollywood has been a big segment for the social media platform this year and it will continue to provide backend support for movie tie-ups.

For multiplex operators such as PVR, promoting movies on social media adds 4% to cinema hall occupancies and about 1012% to revenue. Producers including Mahesh Bhatt are focusing on social media, especially for niche films like 'Citylights', which was released in May. For this movie, they spent Rs 4.5 crore on marketing in the tradi tional media versus a few lakh rupees on social media. Going ahead, Bhatt would rather choose the social medium to amplify the message. "Looking back, we shouldn't have spent so much money on traditional media," says Bhatt.

Traditional forms of advertising for movies are being supplemented with social media promotions, says film critic Taran Adarsh. "Youngsters are glued to social platforms and at times, it makes a lot of sense for filmmakers to announce and share details of their movies on social media instead of engaging offline with a limited number of fans as well as multiple distributors." Adarsh himself uses the medium to tweet weekly movie earnings.

Earlier this year, Salman Khan's fans received personalised posters directly from his account (@BeingSalmanKhan) during the launch of Jai Ho. Pratiksha Rao, entertainment partnerships manager at Twitter India, says the company has creative coordination with various partners from the film industry and provides technology innovation to execute these projects.

"The platform brings people closer to their interests and it is becoming increasingly important for Bollywood partners to discuss their movies on Twitter first," says Rao. She adds that actors have revealed their movie character names on Twitter first, along with the trailers, creating a buzz on the subject. Another factor is the craving by movie fans for personal conversations with actors, which a live medium allows.

"Marketing a movie requires copious amounts of research and if executed well, a movie that has been engaging on social media can draw traffic to the cinemas, says Anirban Das Blah, MD of CAA Kwan, a celebrity management firm. "It's often the most effective medium and gives a great return on investment since it costs very little compared to traditional forms of movie promotions. It is just a supplementary cost to the entire marketing budget," he says.

Production houses are increasing their budgets for social media spending. "Until a year ago, online marketing budgets were restricted to 5-10% of the entire spend, but now they are up to 20%, which includes social media and creating shoulder content created especially for the online medium for audiences to engage in," says Shikha Kapur, chief marketing officer at Fox Star Studio, which has upcoming Bollywood projects including Padukone-starrer 'Finding Fanny' and 'Bang Bang', a Hindi action thriller directed by Siddharth Raj Anand.

User engagement on social media that leads to purchases via movie ticket booking websites can be tracked in the virtual world, unlike trying to figure out how many people decided to watch a film after seeing a print or TV ad.

Film exhibitors such as PVR made the first move towards tapping the power of social media, which has been followed aggressively by production companies. And it isn't just Bollywood. Even in the south, filmmakers are actively using the medium. Pramod Arora, group president of PVR Ltd, says since exhibitors have a strong database of film viewers, they are very well placed to leverage social media."PVR created a booking engine on its Facebook page, which directly leads people into booking tickets. The ROI from social media can be as high as 55%."

Arora adds that there are about 900 films produced in India each year and the top 10% collect 90% of the total revenue. "While the top 10% films do well irrespective of any efforts, the remaining 90% have to be promoted well in order to get best returns and social media plays a very crucial role," Arora explains.

Success isn't always guaranteed. After spending almost 50 lakh on social media, 'Humshakals', a recent Bollywood release made on a budget of 80 crore, failed to enthrall audiences.

A genre of niche films in Bollywood is also being promoted on social networks. Ranjan Singh, head of marketing at Phantom Films, co-founded by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, says the company is releasing an 82-minute documentary about power theft - 'Katiyabaaz' — this Friday. "Since it was a limited-release film for a select kind of audience, we decided to promote and create the required buzz on the social media," says Singh. The company spent 8 lakh on social media initiatives, including releasing trailers on YouTube and live chats with the makers of the film on Facebook and Google Hangouts

Top 5 best YouTube downloaders

Top 5 best YouTube downloaders

Top 5 best YouTube downloaders
There are many legitimate reasons to download a YouTube video. Here's a list of 5 best YouTube downloaders.

YouTube is a phenomenon unto itself and possibly the most successful product for Google after Google search. Launched back in November 2005, the website attracts more than 1 billion unique users every month, and more than 6 billion hours of video are watched during the same period.

Although it might be frowned upon, there are many legitimate reasons to download a YouTube video. One is when you've recorded a video, uploaded it to YouTube, and then lost the original copy. And then there are copyright-free works to consider — from open source and creative content videos to those available in the public domain. You might not even be interested in the video and may just want to download its audio (or soundtrack) instead.

As with peer-to-peer (P2P), just because a technology can be used illegally, that doesn't mean it should be banned. From the myriad of options available, we've plucked out what we consider to be the best ones. They're free, but it's worth bearing in mind that they they may try to install add-ons that you haven't asked for - such as search engine toolbars or software to clean your computer's registry - that you can opt out of.
With that out of the way, here are our top 5 best YouTube downloaders.

1. Freemake Video Downloader

Freemake Video Downloader is a simple-to-use tool for downloading YouTube videos, along with their accompanying audio, in a few clicks. Simply paste in the URL of the video you want to download and click 'Paste URL' to set it running, or install the Firefox add-on to start the download from the YouTube page itself by right-clicking on the video.

The program comes with a slew of extras, including the ability to download YouTube Playlists and convert videos into multiple formats - including AVI and MP3. One of the program's more useful features is a nifty restrict bandwidth option that allows you to slow down your downloads if your internet connection isn't the fastest in the world. This allows you to keep them running smooth as butter while carrying out other tasks - such as streaming online video or gaming.

2. Free YouTube to MP3 Converter

YouTube is first and foremost a resource for watching videos, but there's nothing to stop you just ripping any video's accompanying audio. And, of course, there's more to YouTube audio than background music. Guitarists, pianists and other musicians, for example, could benefit by downloading one of the many instrumental backing tracks uploaded by professional and amateur musicians.

Looking for a funky guitar backing track in B-Minor to jam along to? Or how about downloading a karaoke track for that party you're hosting at the weekend? With Free YouTube to MP3 converter, you can do it in a snap. Copy the URL of the YouTube video you want to rip the audio from and open the program and hit CTRL + V to queue it up. Before ripping, you can select the quality you want to rip the audio in from a variety of formats - including MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV and OGG. Next, pick your desired bit-rate quality and hit download to send it hurtling down the wires.

3. aTube Catcher

With aTube Catcher you'll get the usual array of tools to download and convert YouTube videos (with audio), but it does a whole lot more too. One of its handier features is the ability to resize video, which allows you to cut out parts of clips for your own projects (if they're copyright free, of course) or lower the size of videos before saving them to your computer.

Another cool feature not found in many other programs is the Stream Capture tool, which allows you to load up a video stream from YouTube or other video sites to save streamed content straight to your hard drive, meaning you don't have to wait until a program is made available to officially download, which can take days - or even weeks.

4. Free Studio

Where some YouTube video downloaders focus on performing a single task well, Free Studio offers a comprehensive conversion package that can do tons more after you've made the rip. It's simple enough to get going: load up the program and you're presented with the option to download a YouTube video, or rip its audio as an MP3.

From there, you can choose from multiple conversion options to optimise the file for a certain device. Choose the mobile option, for example, and with a single click you can convert the video for viewing on Android, BlackBerry, HTC, Motorola, Samsung and other handsets. It means that factors like resolution, bit-rate quality and suitable audio codecs are automatically chosen and optimised, perfect for making sure you can view the video offline on your mobile device with no compatibility problems. There's also the ability to burn your video or audio track to a CD or DVD, and you can even give videos a psychedelic3D-type effect using the built-in 3D Video Maker.

5. YTD

YTD is a no-frills video downloading tool that features the handy option of converting your files before they're ripped, saving you from having to do it afterwards. And unlike some other downloaders that only support YouTube, YTD is compatible with a whole range of video sites: from DailyMotion to Facebook and beyond.

It may not be the most feature-packed option on our list, but its uncluttered, compact UI makes it a suitable choice if you're something of a prolific video downloader, allowing you to instantly get a snapshot of how many downloads you've got on the go. You're also provided with information on their progress, the speed that they're downloading and how long it'll be until they're nestled on a corner of your hard drive to be viewed whenever you're ready

Demand for sales, actuarial specialists in Insurance

Demand for sales, actuarial specialists in Insurance

images (16)While the insurance industry has good growth prospects it is threatened by a shortage of talent when it needs it the most. According to an industry paper by Mercer, insurance industry growth is to come primarily from emerging markets — mainly China, India and Brazil — as populations of these countries age, the middle classes swell and urban development soars. However, finding the talent to serve these markets is a daunting task.
In a recent TimesJobs.com High Tea chat Saba Adil, talent head, AEGON Religare discussed the job opportunities available in the Indian insurance sector. She said that currently there is huge demand for professionals specialising in sales, operations, finance, underwriting and HR.
Insurance vertical provides many career opportunities for CA professionals as well. Adil added that the current status of low insurance penetration in India coupled with the increasing awareness about insurance products is pointing towards high potential that insurance and banking sector holds for CA professionals. She said that if a CA needs to gain more understanding about the insurance vertical, they can do specialised courses from the Insurance Institute of India and LOMA.
Another key business function that plays a major role in the insurance vertical is IT. Right from providing technology and systems that create customer experience to creating internal efficiencies, the IT team plays a very important role within an insurance company. With many insurance companies investing heavily in IT, Adil believes that a number of opportunities exist for IT and BPM professionals within this vertical.
According to her, profiles most in demand in the insurance sector are sales, actuarial and underwriting. Since actuarial and underwriting business functions are specialist roles and considering that skilled professionals are limited in these areas, there is a huge demand for such domain experts. With insurance companies having multiple channels of distribution, sales professionals continue to be much in demand.
Insurance as an industry vertical is very rewarding with a number of opportunities for learning and growth. Adil explained that the insurance sector offers competitive salaries and variable pay and sales incentives are high for performers.
Insurance is a long term business. To build a successful career in this sector, candidates should build functional and behavioral skills. Most importantly, customer-centric skills should be the key driver of all their business decisions.

Technology and e-commerce players have taken the lead over companies in core industries during the campus placements at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS)-Pilani. And Google has offered an annual package of Rs 1.40 crore to students selected this year, sources said. The institute hopes to break its last year record of Rs 1.44 crore, offered to one of its students by Facebook.
With companies such as Linkedln, Microsoft, Flipkart, Schlumberger, Goldman Sachs and Amazon also visiting the campus, students eye big offers. All these companies have increased their compensation offer by 5-25%, indicating a better job scenario.
The BITS placement session for 2014 started off with Google, which conducted its first round (written) on August 18 at the Pilani campus. The company’s HR team is slated to visit India in the first week of September.
“A good number of students sat for the first round. We hope that a few of our students will make to the final selection,” said G Balasubramanium, chief placement officer at BITS-Pilani.
This year, 2,300 BITS students are eligible for campus placements — 53 were placed in two days, with the highest domestic package of Rs 23.5 lakh. Microsoft and Schlumberger have also shortlisted students. Both have offered more than Rs 70-lakh annual package to BITS students.
Overall, BITS has placed 150 students at its three centres — Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad. In Goa and Hyderabad, the placement session started on August 13. Facebook, which visited BITS for three consecutive years till last year and offered the highest package in 2013, is not scheduled to visit the campus this year.
The placement officer admitted that attracting these big companies wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the alumni who have a wide network among companies. The institute is confident that by the end of April 2015, 100% students will get placements.

A few students have shown interest in public sector undertakings (PSUs) due to revised pay grades.
Many students here have opted out of placement session to open their own startups. Balasubramanium said among those who opted out of placement sessions, 10 have already started their companies, mostly in IT and communication.

GEA Group, the German industrial machinery and process engineering group, said planned restructuring would include about 1,000 job cuts over the next two to three years.
“However, the exact number of adjustments, the timeline and affected locations are subject to further analyses,” it said in a statement on Thursday.
The group had announced plans late on Wednesday to reorganise its operational activities to save at least 100 million euros ($132 million) a year by the end of 2017.
At the end of June, GEA had just over 18,000 employees around the world, according to its most recent financial report.

Bangalore, Hyderabad to create 40L startup jobs by 2020

Bangalore, Hyderabad to create 40L startup jobs by 2020

1305319805875The two southern states are vying for the spot of the top startup and innovation hub of the country, and announcing major initiatives to encourage entrepreneurs
With the intention of boosting the global image of Bangalore and Hyderabad as global startup and innovation hubs, the Karnataka and Telangana governments announced various initiatives recently. This move is expected to generate about 40 lakh jobs by 2020.
The difference lies in the approach of the two state governments. While Telangana is focusing on promoting innovation and hence start ups by roping in established educational institutions, Karnataka plans to implement their plan via collaborations with Industry associations.
Karnataka
The government announced the setting up of a 50,000 sq ft warehouse NextGen facility, in partnership with NASSCOM to house and integrates India’s first Hack-celerator, a unique combination of a hackathon and an accelerator.
This facility is expected to house an `Internet of Things labs’, Design Centers of Excellence, Mobile Devices Lab to name a few.
“We propose to set up a 50,000 sq.ft `start-up warehouse’, India’s first ever hack-celerator and an ‘Internet of Things’ Lab,” said R Patil, minister for IT, BT, Science & Technology and Planning & Statistics, Karnataka. “It will be one of the first few in the world to be developed in association with NASSCOM and a few big global and Indian IT majors.”
When ready, it is expected to be a one-stop-shop hub where technology entrepreneurs with innovative ideas will be nurtured, mentored and funded by venture capitalists.
A similar move that was implemented by Karnataka in 2013 in the form of the `First Start-Up Warehouse’ spread across 10,000 sq ft, also developed in partnership with NASSCOM, reported impressive results in a short time. The facility resulted in about 28 start-ups and brought in over $1 million of investment in less than a year.
Telangana
This new state plans to develop India’s biggest incubation hub to be launched in Hyderabad by 2014-end or early next year.
The Telangana government plans to develop the hub in collaboration with established educational institutions in the state like the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Hyderabad, Indian School of Business (ISB) and the NALSAR University of Law.

Expected to be set up in the IIIT campus, the T-Hub when ready will be a facility spread over 80,000 square feet and is expected to house 400 start-ups.
While the ISB is expected to provide business mentoring, IIIT expertise will be tapped for technology mentoring while NALSAR is expected to contribute towards help in intellectual property and other related areas.
“Through the incubation centre, we want to give a platform to the youth who have innovative ideas. We don’t want aspiring and budding entrepreneurs to be bogged down with legal, accounting, office space management, mentoring support and funding,” said K. Tarakarama Rao, minister, Information Technology, Telangana.
In phase II the government plans to develop a larger standalone facility, with about 3 lakh sq ft area, to house 1,500 companies. The aim is to bring all start-up programmes under one roof to ensure infrastructure, support services and funds for all startups.
Jobs generated
With the vision to make their respective states the innovation and start-up capital, the governments’ plan to attract angel investors and venture capitalists through regular investment meets.
“By 2020 between the two states one can expect development of about 40 lakh jobs including ancillary, support and back up services required to sustain and develop these hubs,” says Kishor Jagirdar, managing director, Infopace Management Pvt Ltd  and  a key figure in promotion and mentoring startups in Karnataka.
With the two south Indian states vying for the spot of the top startup and innovation hub of the country, clearly the one benefiting is the tech job hunter and budding entrepreneur.

Telecom demands niche technology specialists

Telecom demands niche technology specialists

indian-telecomIn an exclusive interaction, Rajeev Batra, CIO, MTS India talks about the tech specialisations in demand in the telecom vertical
Within the telecom industry there are two kinds of IT systems. One is the customer facing IT system which forms the backbone of the entire telecom business and is leveraged to provide various voice and data services to subscribers. The other is the internal IT team which caters to the needs of the employees and the entire workforce.
The telecom industry requires two distinct IT systems to run its business which reveals that the kind of tech skills diversity required within the telecom service providers is much higher, compared to other industries.
Gap between demand and supply
Though this means there is a huge opportunity for IT professionals within the telecom vertical, the skills required are quite specific. Specialised training in these areas is not very easily available in the form of a course or certification.
“Tech specialisations required within telecom vertical are niche and hence off-the-shelf-training modules are usually not available. In general, these skills are specialised, which may be acquired through hands-on experience or related trainings conducted by OEMs/ISVs,” said Rajeev Batra, CIO, MTS India.
This is one of the reasons why telecom companies face a challenge when looking to hire IT professionals who are domain specialists in such niche areas. Many times, techies interested to work within the Telecom industry are not aware of the kind of IT specialisations in demand within this industry.
Rajeev Batra, CIO, MTS India sheds light on this and talks about the kind of skill-sets in demand in Telecom.
Key tech skills in demand within customer facing IT teams
For IT professionals who want to work in the customer facing IT systems, there is a need to work with the core telecom apps encompassed in BSS (Business Support Systems), OSS (Operations Support Systems), VAS and others. For this, the techies must have skills and experience in applications that enable business processes and operational functionality.
For example, they should have exposure of:
  • Telecom billing and CRM
  • Mobile number portability
  • Revenue assurance
  • Fraud management
  • Over the air functionality
  • Business analytics
  • Campaign management
  • Churn management
  • Customer self-care
  • Regulatory and compliance prescribed systems (legal intercept, DND, second-consent etc)
  • Decision support systems
  • Supply chain management and stock management
  • Lead management, call centre technologies
  • IT services management
Essential domain knowledge for employee facing internal IT teams
Internal IT teams focus on building a robust IT support system for everyday functioning of the business. Their primary service target is the employees.
The key areas where team members of the internal IT team of a telecom company should have exposure are:
  • ERP – financials and HR
  • Collaboration and messaging
  • Intranet and intranet portals
  • Information security
  • Data centers and IT Infrastructure
Movement of IT professionals from technical to managerial roles
While technical certification is relevant for projects, development or operations profiles; for managerial roles expertise in general management and soft skills are more relevant. Mostly IT personnel within telecom industry are engineering graduates and a sizeable percentage of them also have MBA qualification. Most of the time, this is sufficient to take up the challenge of a managerial position.

How to make your mornings work for you

How to make your mornings work for you

How to make your mornings work for you
How to make your mornings work for you

The first hour or so after you wake up is extremely important and determines how your day will eventually be. Here are some ways to kick-start your day...

A positive outlook, focus, stamina, right moves and right food are your keywords in the morning. Follow these tips to turn your morning into a power hour.
Have a glass full of energy
After a night's sleep, the body is dehydrated and you must replenish the fluids in the morning. Have a glass of lukewarm water with honey and the juice of a lemon. This age-old recipe has been tried and tested by many. Make it a point to have warm water even if you don't want to have the lemon and honey. That's because even a two per cent drop in water stores can tire you physically and mentally.

Rise and shine...

Before you go off to sleep, resolve that you will get up as soon as your alarm goes off. If you programme your brain, you will feel rested and well-slept in the morning. When you hear the alarm, do not press the snooze button — the stressed, fitful sleep after that is not worth it at all. Set the alarm for the time you know you have to get up instead of postponing your alarm for every five to 10 minutes.

Colour call

Vibrant colours have a positive effect on your energy and seeing a bright colour as soon as you open your eyes will be good for you. Have bright curtains, a coloured wall or a throw pillow or a comforter that can give you that adrenaline rush.

Welcome sunshine into your life
Sunlight makes your biological clock wake you up. Experts say that the morning sun isn't as harmful as the peak-hour sun. So, sit by a sunny window while you sip your coffee and read the papers

Zaheer likely to miss CLT20

Zaheer Khan's fitness issues have been well-documented in the past.

Zaheer Khan's plans of participating in the Champions League Twenty20 has suffered a major setback. The injury-hit veteran India fast bowler, who damaged his tendon in his bowling arm during the IPL earlier this year while playing for Mumbai Indians, said that he has just started bowling and that his recovery has been quite slow, reports ESPNcricinfo.

Zaheer is nearing 100 Tests (92 matches) and has represented India in 200 ODIs, but has come under the scanner for his repeated fitness issues. The 35-year-old, when asked about another possible comeback to the national side, said he was happy being where he is for the time being.

"I like to stay in the present. Control the controllable, it's the best you can do," Zaheer said. "I don't really think about the future and what is going to happen and I don't stress about what has already happened.

"I have to just go with how my body is responding and the important thing is for me to play again, I have to bowl at my best. First I have to satisfy myself that I am there and that I can deliver. If I am able to live up to the stress and pressures of international cricket, I'll just take a call at that time."

Zaheer's previous two assignments for India has yielded decent outings, accounting for 16 wickets on tours of South Africa and New Zealand. Although a diminishing body has taken a lot out of him, Zaheer believes he was happy with his performance.

"It is about how you are impacting the game. I was never an out and out fast bowler. I was always dependent on my skill set, how I set up a batsman and how I am making that impact in a spell. If you look at these four games, I did have spells where I got wickets in bulk. I was able to break partnerships, which is the key.

"If the opponents are having a good run, someone needs to put their hand up and break it. I was always there in that scenario and those are the checkpoints for me. I was very happy that I was able to keep up with the workload."

Reflecting his views on India's disastrous Test series of England, Zaheer said the batsmen need to get going in order for the team to win matches abroad. "I have always felt that if you score 350 runs in the first innings then you are always in the game. If you don't achieve that then you are always catching up with the game.

"The success we had overseas in the past, the key was that we put the runs on the board. Then we won that battle, and then you went and got those wickets as well."

Samsung Galaxy Note 4's camera to focus on selfies

Samsung Galaxy Note 4's camera to focus on selfies

Samsung Galaxy Note 4's camera to focus on selfies
In addition it looks like Samsung will upgrade Galaxy Note 4's front-facing camera from the 2.1MP found in the Galaxy Note 3 to 3.7MP.

Word on the street some time ago was that Samsung Galaxy Note 4 could pack a walloping 20MP camera, but recently a 16MP snapper has seemed more likely.

Now SamMobile is confirming once again that that's what its sources are saying along with providing a boat load of additional Galaxy Note 4 camera details, including a greater-than-ever focus on selfies.

According to the site's "elite friends," the Note 4 will indeed sport a 16MP Sony IMX240 camera, capable of shooting ultra HD video with 3840x2160p resolution at 30 frames per second.

But unlike the version of this camera found on the Korean variant of the Samsung Galaxy S5, the Note 4's camera will reportedly also feature Optical Image Stabilization (OIS).

Camera convenience
In addition it looks like Samsung will upgrade the Note 4's front-facing camera from the 2.1MP found in the Galaxy Note 3 to 3.7MP.

But there may be much more in store for the Note 4's camera.

For one thing it will supposedly include Side Touch, a side-mounted capacitive button for snapping photos that SamMobile says was originally intended for the Galaxy S5 before being pulled at the last minute.

Further there may be a new gesture for accessing the camera when the screen is off; tapping with two fingers and swiping them apart.
Best selfies ever
But clearly the most important rumor here is that the Galaxy Note 4 will have four new camera modes, three of which are dedicated to the art of the selfie: "Selfie" mode, "Wide Selfie," "Selfie Alarm," and "Create A GIF File."

Most intriguing of those is Selfie Alarm, which allegedly makes it easier to take selfies with the phone's superior rear-mounted camera by allowing it to automatically detect your face and snap the photo.

Hopefully we'll know more soon, as the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is expected out in September

Apple filing reveals plans for 'jewelry' components
A PTT Research analyst posted an Apple filing in which the firm asked Department of Commerce for permission to expand its sapphire production.

In case you wanted even more evidence Apple is planning to release a new sapphire laden device... PTT Research senior analyst Matt Margolis posted an Apple filing on Scribd in which the Cupertino firm asked the US Department of Commerce for permission to expand its sapphire production operations at its new Mesa factory. Everything looks legit, down to Apple director of global trade compliance James J Patton's signature.

The alleged request was filed on July 2 and requests an expedited review so Apple could meet an "aggressive go-live timeline of August 2014." The filing goes on to make several mentions to sapphire and "jewelry" components.

Adding everything up, it seems as though Apple was looking to kickstart sapphire production by the beginning of this month. The newly reported documents tie closely to reports last week suggesting Apple was hoping to begin producing mass quantities of sapphire by the end of August at its GT Advanced Technologies co-operated factory.

Time's up
So far, we've heard many early reports pointing to the Apple introducing a sapphire screened device. Once again, there's no mention in the document what size or type of electronic we might see sapphire being incorporated in to.

Jewelry components, however, is a big hint Apple is thinking iWatch here.

Due to the lateness of the sapphire production it seems even less likely it will come to the iPhone 6. Assuming history repeats itself, Apple's next handset should show up at its usual September event and go on sale close to a week later.

It would be nearly impossible for Apple to go from producing phones, assembling them and then launching the device into a full retail launch all within the span of a month and a half. At the same time reports have suggested sapphire is being reserved for a more expensive iPhone 6.

The heavily speculated iWatch seems like a much more likely candidate to receive the sapphire screen upgrade. Luxury watches typically come with the scratch resistant material and a recent report also tipped the Apple wearable to get the sapphire treatment.

Stay tuned for September 9 when we're guaranteed to at least see the iPhone 6. We wouldn't put it past Apple to slip in the iWatch too for good measure

Microsoft to unveil Windows 9 on September 30: Report
The Verge's sources say Microsoft has begun planning a big press event at the end of September to officially unveil the next version of Windows.

Set your calendars — it seems Microsoft is all set to unveil Windows 9 on September 30.

Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans have informed The Verge that the company has begun planning a big press event at the end of September to officially unveil the next version of Windows.

Codenamed Threshold, Microsoft may even have a developer preview of Windows 9 waiting in the wings for release in in late September or early October. Sources claim the event will reveal many of the key features in the upcoming operating system.

One of the most exciting tidbits of the Windows 9 preview is it could include an early desktop version of Cortana.

So far Microsoft's virtual assistant has only lived on Windows Phone 8.1 mobile devices, though some features have spilled over to Bing. It would make sense for Microsoft to implement Cortana on full-fledged PCs considering the company has announced it was moving towards a single Windows platform across devices.

Bringing back the old favourites
Early reports surrounding Windows 9 thus far have suggested Microsoft will bring back features to make its next operating system more focused for desktops. Most importantly Windows 9 could reintroduce the Start menu with a few incorporated smart tiles influenced by Windows Phone 8.1.

More recent reports have suggested the Redmond company will do away with the Charms bar and move quick access options to application title bars. Supposedly Microsoft is implementing the change in service of a more keyboard-and-mouse friendly experience for desktop users.

Microsoft has also been purportedly building a combined version of its Windows RT and Windows Phone operating systems. We imagine this hybrid platform could be used for a new line of more entertainment consumption-based tablets rather than a productivity mobile PC like the Surface Pro 3
