Why Apple needs more than just China Mobile deal

Why Apple needs more than just China Mobile deal

BEIJING: For all the hype, Apple Inc's long-awaited iPhone agreement with China Mobile Ltd may deliver little more than a fleeting revenue jolt for the US giant.
A deal with the world's largest mobile carrier, expected as early as this week, nets Apple 759 million potential new customers that could generate $3 billion in 2014 revenue, or nearly one-quarter of Apple's projected revenue growth in its current fiscal year.
But after the initial haul, Apple will find itself in a familiar, expensive battle with its main smartphone rival, South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, to win over customers, one wallet at a time.
And China Mobile will likely have to wait at least a year for its payout as it spends billions of dollars to build a 4G network so customers can make full use of their iPhones.
"The easiest way to grow iPhone sales was always distribution. This was the pot at the end of the rainbow and now that we're there, it's going to be an old-fashioned slog it out over customers," said Ben Thompson, a Taipei-based writer on the technology industry at stratechery.com.
China is Apple's second-largest market after the United States. Net sales in China for the fiscal year ended September 2013 rose 13 percent to $25.4 billion, accounting for about 15 percent of Apple's $170.9 billion in total net sales.
But its performance has been mixed. Where once there were lines around the block for the newest iPhone, now Apple faces intense competition from Samsung plus a host of local players such as Xiaomi making cheaper smartphones.
China Mobile, which says it already has 45 million iPhone users, could gain 17 million new activations and the deal should generate at least $3 billion in revenue for Apple in 2014, according to Forrester Research.
Analysts expect Apple's revenue to increase by $13.2 billion in its fiscal year ending September 2014, according to Thomson Reuters.
Apple declined to comment on its negotiations with China Mobile. China Mobile spokeswoman Rainie Lei said talks were ongoing and declined to elaborate.
After the gold rush
The last of the big-name carrier signings marks a shift in the smartphone battle: once availability is no longer an issue, marketing becomes the deciding factor.
Samsung has the spending edge.
The South Korean titan is expected to spend around $14 billion on advertising and marketing this year. Samsung spends a bigger chunk of its annual revenue on advertising and promotion than any of the world's top 20 companies by sales - 5.4 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data. Apple spends just 0.6 percent.
"Apple is definitely going to have to increase marketing spend," said Bryan Wang, a Beijing-based analyst with Forrester Research.
"Apple is going to gain revenues from China through the upcoming China Mobile agreement. But its next question will be how to further compete with competitors after the first year."
Another problem for Apple is consumer habits in China, where smartphone buyers tend to prefer cheaper handsets. More than 88 percent of people buying smartphone handsets in the third quarter spent less than $500, according to data from Canalys.
The latest iPhone 5S costs $868 in China while the 5C fetches $737, according to Apple's China website.
To be sure, even winning over a tiny percentage of China Mobile's 759 million subscribers would be a boon for Apple.
"The absolute number of people who are rich and can afford an iPhone is quite large. It's a big deal," said stratechery.com's Thompson.

One-two punch
For China Mobile, the payout will have to wait as it pumps billions of dollars into its 4G network roll-out and iPhone subsidies eat into profit margins.
It will take at least one year before an iPhone deal is profitable for the carrier, according to Delta Partners, a global telecoms, media and technology advisory and investment firm based in Dubai.
Moody's Investors Service expects China Mobile's capital spending as a percentage of revenue will be about 30 percent in 2014, due to 4G spending. That works out to about 196 billion yuan ($32.28 billion), based on Thomson Reuters data on revenue forecasts from 29 analysts.
China Mobile's existing iPhone users can only use the company's slower 2G wireless speeds because its proprietary 3G TD-SCDMA standard is not compatible with iPhones.
The company hopes the one-two punch of high-speed 4G mobile Internet and Apple iPhones will bring back customers who abandoned the carrier for China Unicom Hong Kong Ltd and China Telecom Corp, both of which already offer the iPhone. China Mobile also hopes to get current subscribers to upgrade to premium product and service.
One wild card is how the deal will be structured. In the United States, Apple's home ground, wireless carriers subsidise the iPhone in return for two-year contracts. These subsidies help make the iPhone affordable to a wider US customer base.
Analysts estimate operators pay about $400 subsidy for each iPhone they sell, compared with about $250 to $300 for other smartphones.
While carriers take an initial margin hit, they typically recover the subsidy cost over the two-year contract because iPhone buyers typically tack on pricy data plans

Infosys sees choppy growth for next two quarters

Infosys sees choppy growth for next two quarters
Infosys expects choppy revenue growth over the coming two quarters despite seeing improvement in the overall demand environment.

BANGALORE: India's second-largest software firm Infosys expects choppy revenue growth over the coming two quarters despite seeing improvement in the overall demand environment.

In a meeting with equity research firm Nomura, the Bangalore-based company said its recent internal changes, ongoing cost rationalisation and consolidation of Switzerland based Lodestone, which Infosys had acquired last year, will have an impact on the company's near-term revenue growth.

"Management indicated that the challenges to growth were more internal rather than external, as it would take time for the company to absorb the recent organisational changes," the Nomura report said. Infosys said it recognises that total contract wins worth $2 billion over the past four quarters is not sufficient, according to the report.

Infosys, which it lagged its peers during the last two years, reported better-than-expected revenue growth in the first and second quarter of this fiscal year. In June, its cofounder NR Narayana Murthy returned to the company as chairman to rebuild a "desirable Infosys".

Murthy has been implementing a series of changes at Infosys, including cutting costs at on-site work locations, aimed at improving the company's revenue growth. Since Murthy's return, the company has seen at least six senior level exits. In July, its global sales head Basab Pradhan quit, while in August, its global manufacturing head Ashok Vemuri resigned to join rival firm iGate.

The company expects technology spending by its clients to increase next year, the Nomura report said. Infosys said it has not seen any signs that indicate next years technology budgets will be delayed.

"The demand environment has improved, especially in financial services, where it is clearly visible according to Infosys. Discretionary spending has also increased in pockets, though it has not come back to the extent that the company would like," the report said.

"Infosys is clear that they cannot afford to remain below industry in revenue growth."

During the second-quarter earnings, the company had raised the lower end of its revenue guidance, saying it now expects revenues to grow at least 9% this fiscal. Software industry bodyNasscom expects the IT sector revenues growth in the range of 12% to 14%

India begin life without Tendulkar against fiery South Africa

JOHANNESBURG: India begin life without "Little Master" on Wednesday, taking on top ranked South Africa in the first of a two-Test series in their first contest since Sachin Tendulkar's retirement.

After nearly a quarter of a century of cricket, Tendulkar retired last month with more than 34000 international runs against his name to go with a slew of batting records.

The absence of international cricket's most prolific batsman, whose retirement last month provoked an emotional farewell in India, is just one of several concerns for captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni ahead of the series opener at the Wanderers in Johannesburg

The speed, bounce and swing of South Africa's all-pace attack saw India's batsmen struggle while there was also a hammering for their bowlers in three one-day internationals between the two sides over the last fortnight.

Having won the first two one-dayers and dominated the third as well before the match was washed out, South Africa will have a massive psychological edge going into the Test series but it was supposed to have been the other way round.

Before arriving in South Africa, Dhoni said playing without Tendulkar would be a challenge but the one-day series was an opportunity for the team to settle and gain confidence ahead of the Test matches.

Instead, Tendulkar is now likely to be missed even more, given the masterly way he previously dealt with the South African conditions, in sharp contrast to India's batting capitulation over the last weeks.

"They (the Indian team) have always had issues playing pace in South Africa," South Africa coach Russell Domingo said.

"We wanted to put doubts in their mind in terms of the way they play pace," he said of his team's aggressive bowling in the ODI series.

South Africa hope to extend the same domination in the much anticipated Test series, controversially curtailed to just two matches following a spat between the controlling bodies of world's top two Test nations.

In Tendulkar's absence, the likes of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli will carry Indian hopes of dealing with an expected barrage of hostile bowling on pitches vastly different from those they usually play on.

"It's not Mumbai where the ball doesn't get higher than the stumps. It's going to be hard (for them) to play here," South African strike bowler Dale Steyn warned at a media conference during the ODI series.

Tendulkar flourished in the battle against the ball in South Africa, scoring five Test centuries on tours between 1992 and 2011. He hit 146 in Cape Town just under three years ago.

"He was a big player for them and a calming influence in the dressing room. It will be great not having to get Sachin Tendulkar out," added Domingo

India’s first Tegra 4-powered tablet launched @ Rs 17,999
Indian phone maker Lava has launched its new Nvidia Tegra 4-powered tablet, Xolo Play Tegra Note in India at an MRP of Rs 17,999.

NEW DELHI: Indian phone maker Lava has launched its new Nvidia Tegra 4-powered 7 inch tablet, the Xolo Play Tegra Note in the Indian market at an MRP of Rs 17,999.

The Xolo Play Tegra Note is based on Nvidia's Tegra Note reference design which was announced by chipmaker Nvidia in September.

The tablet was listed on an e-commerce website, earlier this month for Rs 18,990.

The Xolo Play Tegra Note features a 7-inch HD IPS LCD (1280x800 pixels) display. The tablet is powered by a 1.8GHz Tegra 4 processor with a 72-core GeForce GPU and quad-core Cortex-A15 CPU with a fifth battery-saver core.

The Xolo Play Tegra Note runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, which is an old iteration of the OS, though the company has said that the tablet will shortly receive the Android 4.3 update.

It sports a 5-megapixel rear camera and a VGA front-facing camera. The tablet comes with 16GB of inbuilt storage which is expandable up to 32GB via a microSD slot.

It features front-facing stereo speakers with bass-reflex port. The Tegra Note tablet can offer up to 10 hours of HD video playback, as per Xolo.

The tablet ships with a chisel tip stylus featuring Nvidia's DirectStylus technology, a camera app optimised for the Tegra 4 processor that uses Nvidia's Chimera computational photography architecture and Nvidia's PureAudio sound technology.

The Xolo Play Tegra Note also comes with Nvidia TegraZone that features Tegra-optimized games. It also supports a variety of Bluetooth game controllers.

However, a major letdown is that this device doesn't offer 3G connectivity or voice calling, which means you'll need access to Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet.

The tablet would compete with Google and Asus' Nexus 7 (2013) which comes with Android 4.4 KitKat, the latest version of the OS, and with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 T211

Why teens are abandoning Facebook

Why teens are abandoning Facebook

Why teens are abandoning Facebook
In 2012, Facebook was the primary social media site for teenagers but, this year Twitter has overtaken as the No.1 social media site.
SYDNEY: The age of 30 has become Facebook's largest user demographic.

Social media expert Michael McQueen, in what is described as the 'Levi's Effect', said teenagers were abandoning Facebook for other social networks such as Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.

McQueen said Levi jeans were a cool, young brand until parents' started wearing them and the same thing has happened with Facebook, smh.com.au reports.

In 2012, Facebook was the primary social networking site for teenagers but, this year Twitter has overtaken Facebook as the number one social networking website.

McQueen said that as teens' log-off from Facebook, people aged 30 and over were logging-in.

He said that the older generation began signing up in 2010 as a lot of these users were parents who wanted to spy on their kids.

He added that now parents were logging in to reconnecting with old school friends and people who live overseas and they have caught the Facebook bug.

Professor of Public Communication at the University of Technology, Jim Macnamara, said adults also turn to Facebook while on holidays.

No relief in sight for users as Yahoo Mail trouble hits fourth day

No relief in sight for users as Yahoo Mail trouble hits fourth day

yahoo-logo-635.jpg
An outage at Yahoo Mail hit its fourth day on Thursday, prompting thousands of furious users to ratchet up their criticism on social media.
Many people said they couldn't retrieve emails from their inboxes or complained that emails were not being delivered.
"We are continuing to work on resolving this and ask that you stay tuned for further updates," Yahoosaid in a message fired off on Twitter.
The California-based firm on Wednesday apologized and promised a fix by the end of that day, but problems have persisted.
Yahoo would not disclose the number of email accounts knocked out of service since late Monday night California time. It is estimated there are about 280 million Yahoo Mail users.
"We are very sorry for recent difficulties with Yahoo Mail," the company's senior vice president of communication products Jeffrey Bonforte said in a short message posted on Tumblr.
He blamed the outage on a "hardware problem" at one of Yahoo's data centers.
Some functionality was returning to the free Web-based email service as Yahoo scrambled to get it back in full operation.
Yahoo Mail users turned to Twitter and online chat forums to unleash frustration at being cut off from email and threatening to switch to a free service offered by Google.
Among complaints was a woman who complained having emailed invitations to a holiday party and not knowing what to expect because replies aren't being delivered.
"I need my account back!" a woman identified as Natalie Bean said in a message on Twitter.
"Fix it so I can permanently switch emails!"
The Yahoo Mail disruption marks a stumble for chief executive Marissa Mayer, who has made focusing on people's "daily habits" such as email part of her plan to revive the faded Internet pioneer.

Nokia Normandy budget Android phone in the works, due in 2014: Report

Nokia Normandy budget Android phone in the works, due in 2014: Report

nokia-normandy-leak-635.jpg
Nokia, which has been supporting the Windows Phone platform like a lone ranger, might be finally changing gears and soon releasing an Android phone, if a report is to be believed.
The Verge cites sources familiar with Nokia's plans as saying that the Finnish handset maker has been working on its first Android phone, codenamed Normandy, and that it is expected to be launched in 2014. Interestingly, the report reveals that Nokia, following the lead of Amazon, is working on a fully-tailored or forked version of Android, like the software on the online retail giant's Kindle Fire tablet range.
The rumoured Nokia Normandy smartphone is said to be targeted at the low-cost segment as an Asha-equivalent smartphone, but with access to more traditional smartphone apps - a benefit that the report suggests has been missing in Nokia's dated Series 40-based Asha phones. Further, the report describes the Nokia Normandy efforts as 'full steam ahead'.
Unfortunately, there is no word on the innards of the alleged Nokia Normandy. Earlier, the serial phone tipster, @evleaks revealed the rumoured Nokia Normandy in a render, saying, "A real Asha. Or Lumia? The Nokia Normandy."
Contradicting the rumours about a Nokia Android phone, Stephen Elop, the former CEO of Nokia had said in July that the company made the right decision by choosing Windows Phone over Android. As of now, there is no clarity whether the alleged Nokia Normandy Android phone is true or just a rumour.
It would be interesting to see if Nokia can release its rumoured Android phone ahead of the completion of the Microsoft deal.
After signing a pact to sell its handset business to MicrosoftNokia could neither license the 'Nokia' brand for use in connection with mobile device sales nor use the brand on its own mobile devices for a specific period. In addition, Microsoft has already agreed to a 10-year license arrangement with Nokia to use the Nokia brand on current and subsequently developed mobile phones based on the Series 30 and Series 40 operating systems.

Instagram introduces Instagram Direct for private sharing with up to 15 people

Instagram introduces Instagram Direct for private sharing with up to 15 people

instagram_direct.jpg
Instagram has added a new feature that lets users share photos and videos with up to 15 people rather than everyone who follows them on the popular Facebook-owned photo-sharing app.
Called Instagram Direct, the feature is available for Apple and Android phones, CEO Kevin Systrom said at a news event in New York City. Users can choose up to 15 people who follow them on Instagram to share photos or videos.
Previously, the only way to share content on Instagram was to post it to your feed, which can be either visible to everyone or locked so only people you approve can see it.
The new tool comes as popularity of messaging apps like Snapchat and WhatsApp is growing. On Tuesday, Twitter also updated its direct messaging tool to let users send photos and videos to one another for the first time.
Forrester Research analyst Julie Ask called the messaging tool a "catch up move" for Instagram, in a blog post, noting that apps such as WeChat already let people share videos, photos, messages and other content.
To use Instagram Direct, download the latest update to the app, and upload or snap a photo the way you normally would. Once you're done applying old-school filters, tagging your buddies and adding a caption if you wish, you'll get the option to either share with "followers" or "direct." Tapping the latter will bring up suggested followers to send the photo to, or let you pick from your list of followers.
Once you send the photo, a green check mark will appear if the recipient has seen it, replaced by a heart if they "liked" it. It is possible to send photos to people who don't follow you, but it'll appear as a pending request and won't go into their inbox. They can tap "X" and they won't get a direct message from you again - or tap a checkmark and it'll go into their inbox.
Systrom said the reason for the 15-recipient limit is to make the feature about "moments you share with friends" and "not about spamming everyone you know."
Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia thinks the new feature will help Instagram compete with Snapchat, the disappearing-message app that Facebook reportedly tried and failed to buy for $3 billion recently.
Instagram has more than 150 million users - up from 80 million at the start of this year - and more than half of them use it every day, Systrom said.

LG G Flex with 6-inch curved display coming to India in February 2014

LG G Flex with 6-inch curved display coming to India in February 2014

lg-g-flex.jpg
LG announced in New Delhi on Wednesday that its much-anticipated curved display smartphone, the G Flex, will be available in India in February 2014. The South Korean manufacturer did not reveal the India pricing of the G Flex however, though Amit Gujral, general manager at LG Electronics, said the phone can be expected to be priced between Rs. 60,000 and Rs. 65,000.

The Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean-based G Flex is powered by a quad-core 2.26GHz Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974) processor with an Adreno 330 GPU, and 2GB of RAM. It features a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. The G Flex is powered by a 3,500mAh battery, weighs 177 grams, and is 7.9mm at its thinnest, while being 8.7mm at its thickest.

As for the 6-inch curved display, LG has used a curved OLED panel, which is also built on plastic substrates instead of glass, supposedly giving the phone better durability. The display features Real RGB technology to provide all three sub-pixels in one pixel, thereby making it "brighter and more precise."

LG has also included a new 'self-healing' coating on the back cover, an elastic coating that supposedly has the ability to "recover from the daily wear-and-tear scratches and nicks that un-cased smartphones are likely to receive." The LG G Flex's self-healing capabilities have also been creating a buzz worldwide.

Apart from the 'Rear Keys' introduced with the G2, the LG G Flex also incorporates the some new user interface features, such as QTheater for quick access to photos, videos and YouTube from the lock screen; Dual Window for multitasking with two windows; Swing Lockscreen for a dynamic lockscreen image based on the way the phone's held; as well as three Rear Key LED indicators - Face Detection, Camera Timer and Urgent Call Alert.

LG launched its first curved display smartphone, the G Flex in October this year with much fanfare, and it was rolled out only in South Korea initially. Recently, the company announced that the LG G Flex was ready for a global roll-out, starting with Singapore and Hong Kong.

Spotify launches free service for mobile devices; now in 55 markets worldwide

Spotify launches free service for mobile devices; now in 55 markets worldwide

girl_smsing_iPhone_635.jpg
Online music-streaming service Spotify on Wednesday launched a free music service for smart phones and tablets as it tries to hook a fast-growing group of users keen to stream tunes on their mobile devices.
Spotify offers free music on desktop computers with advertising but customers previously had to pay for on-demand connection on their mobile devices.
Its new service will allow listeners to choose the tracks they want to hear for free - with commercial interruptions - in the hope that people will upgrade to subscriptions.
"The more music you play, the more likely you will pay," said Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek during a press conference at Spotify's offices in New York.
Spotify has about 24 million active users around the world of which 6 million pay to listen to music without advertising.
Ek also announced Spotify launched in 20 new markets for a total of 55 markets worldwide.
As smartphones and tablets mushroom they have become choice devices to listen to music, even in the home, Ek said.
"It's the one thing on my mind more than a year that had been bugging me," Ek said about the proliferation of mobile devices and making Spotify available on them for free.
Streaming music has soared in popularity but competition is fierce with U.S. rival Pandora, Apple Inc'siTunes Radio, Sirius XM, Rdio and a handful of smaller players all battling it out for listeners.
Revenues from mobile advertising at Pandora, which dominates the U.S. music streaming space and has over 70 million active listeners in three markets, have been rising as more people tune in on their smartphones.
Ek said that Spotify plans to air an ad every three or four songs, similar to the frequency of advertising spots on Spotify's free desktop service.
Still, while consumers flock to streaming music services it has been difficult to turn a profit because of the cost to license music. Spotify strikes royalty deals with record labels and pays back about 70 percent of its revenue - already totaling $1 billion - to rights holders.
It's a point that Spotify brings up often that usually coincides with the announcement of an artist or band that has chosen Spotify as a partner.
This year, that group is Led Zeppelin, whose entire catalog is now available to stream and on-demand exclusively on Spotify.
Last December Spotify announced that Metallica signed with the service - a notable addition since that group was once one of the leading crusaders more than a decade ago against the digital music sharing service Napster.

Technology giant Google extended its mega event, Great Online Shopping Festival (GOSF) by a day after getting a huge response from shoppers with over a million users visiting the site in the first 24 hours.
The second edition of India's GOSF, which started yesterday, will now go on till Saturday instead of Friday.
E-commerce firms said even the initial problems faced by the GOSF site on its launch day has not doused the enthusiasm of the online shoppers and they are witnessing growing numbers on their platforms.
"GOSF is getting an overwhelming response from shoppers, despite a minor glitch we faced yesterday and to keep up the tempo and give more time to shoppers, we are extending GOSF by a day and will now run till December 14," Google India industry director e-commerce Nitin Bawankule told PTI. "GOSF's first edition last year witnessed over a million people visiting the site, but this time that number has already been surpassed," he added.
"The popularity can be gauged by the fact that Tata Value Homes sold 22 flats (housing units) and 3 cars have also been sold," Bawankule said.
GOSF's website faced issues on the launch day yesterday as the homepage of the website failed to redirect users to the intended pages.
"We're so sorry for the delay in the #GOSF launch. The site will be up soon and you can shop through the deals being offered until 13th Dec (sic)," Google India said in a tweet on Wednesday.
Despite the initials hiccups, e-commerce firms said that they are experiencing a huge response from shoppers. Over 200 partners are participating in the event.
"GOSF 2013 has started off with a blast on Snapdeal. We have seen 10x increase in sales as compared to last year," Snapdeal.com VP (Marketing) Sandeep Komaravelly said.
Similarly, Jabong co-founder Manu K Jain said from that Jabong was seeing a phenomenal increase in traffic and sales from the first day. "Revenue has increased 4-5 times more than a usual day. Coping up with the increasing traffic our IT team is working very hard to keep the website from crashing," he added.
Myntra CEO Vikas Ahuja said: "We are seeing very positive results so far on Day 1. Our traffic has grown approximately 2 times, and revenue growth is 3.5 times, versus the preceding few days."
eBay India e-commerce evangelist Deepa Thomas said that last year the site witnessed a significant jump in first time buyers during the online shopping fest, which is eBay's key expectation this year too.
