Xiaomi to approach Indian authorities to sort out security concerns
Last week, in an advisory, the Indian Air Force asked its personnel and their families to desist from using Chinese 'Xiaomi Redmi 1s' phones.
NEW DELHI: Stressing that it does not collect any user data without permission, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi today said it will engage with Indian authorities to address the concerns about security of user's data.
Last week, in an advisory, the Indian Air Force asked its personnel and their families to desist from using Chinese 'Xiaomi Redmi 1s' phones as these are believed to be transferring data to their servers in China and could be a security risk.
"We are trying to get to the bottom of this. So far, we have not heard anything from the IAF or any other authorities and have only read media reports. We will reach out to authorities and engage with them to address any concerns that they might have," Xiaomi Vice President Hugo Barra told .
Earlier this year, security solutions provider F-Secure had, in a report, demonstrated how a Xiaomi Redmi 1S phone was sending data, including the user's IMEI, phone number, and phone numbers of contacts added to the phone book to a remote server.
Based on the report and inputs from Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), the IAF note was prepared. Barra said the company collect data only with the user's permission to offer specific services like cloud. "We don't have a revolutionary product. Like many other messaging services, we also offer messaging, backup, cloud services to our customers. We also have the highest standards of encryption to ensure that users' data is safe," he added. He said the company has already started migrating data of its international users (non-Chinese) to data centres in the US and Singapore.
"The migration process, which began earlier this year, will be completed by the end of October and will benefit users in international markets, including our customers in India, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan," he added. Xiaomi entered the Indian market in July this year with its Mi3 smartphone priced at Rs 13,999 through e-Commerce major Flipkart. It currently has another device Redmi 1S in the country. It is estimated that the firm has sold about half a million Redmi devices and 1.2 lakh Mi3 handsets.

Is it time to get a smartwatch?

Is it time to get a smartwatch?

Is it time to get a smartwatch?
Should you ditch your trusty timepiece just yet?

It's official: mobile device manufacturers are warring for the precious real es tate on your wrist, and everyone from Samsung to LG to Motorola are coming out guns blazing. Google launched its Android Wear platform for wearable devices this March, and Apple just wrapped up its keynote event only a few weeks ago, announcing the imminent arrival of the Apple Watch. Should you ditch your trusty timepiece just yet?

Hold that thought
Before you start looking up smartwatch prices online and calling your NRI relatives to find out when they're visiting next, consider whether or not you're an early adopter.Sure, there's the rush of being one of the first few people in your circle to own and use new technology, and enjoy the utility and convenience it brings - but you're also going to have to put up with the limitations of your new purchase, which takes a product cycle or several to work out, before it makes sense for the public at large to buy into it too. However, early adopters also generally end up paying high prices for the first generation of a new category of devices. But with smartwatches, it looks like prices for these devices are already fairly reasonable, when you consider what traditional timepieces usually cost.
What is it good for
In my mind, there are only two real reasons for buying a smartwatch right now: You want notifications and info from your phone without having to whip out your device every few minutes. This makes sense if you're frequently at events and meetings where you don't want to appear rude or preoccupied with your phone, while keeping up with your digital life.
You want a watch that can do far more than just tell time.
If you believe in function over fashion, and have drooled over those TV-remoteplus-calculator watches that were popular in the 1990s, you'll love wearing a smartwatch. And hey, you get to switch watch faces whenever you like for a whole new look! Smartwatches are designed to complement your smartphone: they pair with your mobile device over Bluetooth and bring timely information and real-time notifications to your wrist. You'll receive alerts for new emails, text and instant messages, and social network pings. With specially-designed apps, you can also get weather and stock updates, control music playback on your phone, dictate and send voice messages, search the web, and track your workouts and health stats.
It's pretty neat to have all these functions available right on your watch. However, you can do all these things better on your smartphone (which you have to carry around for your smartwatch to work), and on a bigger screen that's easier to see and use. The major issue plaguing the current crop of smartwatches right now is battery life: right now, you'll be lucky if you get through a day without having to charge your smartwatch. And these watches generally use proprietary chargers (the Moto 360 uses a bulky dock) to power up, which means you've got yet another device to lug around if you want to keep your gadgets humming all day.
Personally, I'd buy a smartwatch if it could help me find my phone when I can't spot it, and last as long as the Timex I'm wearing right now. Let's hope manufacturers figure out this battery life issue soon.
What's on offer?
If you still feel like you simply must have one, here are the best smart watches you can consider buying now and in the near future:
Pebble
Want a smartphone but don't want to deal with a 1-day battery life? This is the smartwatch that got everyone excited back in 2012, and is still the smartest choice to go with. Featuring a powersaving e-paper display, physical but tons for interactions, and its own app marketplace, the Pebble plays nice with iOS and Android phones, and runs for about a week on a single charge.

You can load third party apps to receive turn-by-turn directions, get realtime news and blog updates, remotely trigger your smartphone camera and include yourself in group photos, and even control presentations running on your phone. Plus, it's available in a range of colours and even in
handsome Steel editions to suit your style. getpebble.com | Rs 9,150 approx. Pebble Steel: Rs 15,250 approx.
Moto 360

Motorola's long-awaited champion of the Android Wear platform features a stainless case, leather band and an edge-to-edge touchscreen display. It works really well with Google Now, displaying relevant info when you most need it -your boarding pass just before your flight, or directions to your next meeting when it's time to leave. You can also use your voice to jot down notes, send emails and messages, and search Google. The watch is available exclusively n Flipkart. moto360.motorola.com | Rs 17,999

Apple Watch
The premium choice in smartphones from Cupertino features an impeccable finish with a range of custom finishes including stainless steel, aluminum and 18K gold cases and leather and metal bands and bracelets that you can switch easily. The touchscreen display works with gestures as well as a Digital Crown for zooming and navigation, and users can enjoy some neat features: view maps, make and answer calls, mark emails as read unread or trash them, view photos, and send doodles or even your heartbeat to Apple Watch-owning loved ones.apple.comwatch | Starts at $399 approx; ships early 2015.

Moto 360 smartwatch review: Adding convenience

Moto 360 smartwatch review: Adding convenience

Moto 360 smartwatch review: Adding convenience

Top Features

1. Makes checking notifications very convenient
2. Great design
3. Packed with features, like heart rate monitor, pedometer, water-resistance etc
Motorola has made quite a splash with its Moto 360 smartwatch globally, offering the first smartwatch that comes with a round dial, water-resistance as well as an integrated heart rate monitor and pedometer. But do you really need a smartwatch? Will its unique features be enough to help the Motorola smartwatch speed up the adoption of wearables in India? Is this smartwatch worth the asking price of Rs 17,999? Find out all the answers in our Moto 360 review...
Display and design

Moto 360 has a 1.56-inch LCD display clad with Gorilla Glass 3 on a round watch-face, making it the only circular smartwatch in the market. The IPS panel is pretty good to look at and adjusts the brightness by itself if you have turned on the ambient light sensor. The display remains turned off usually but lights up automatically when you turn the wrist to look at the watch; of course, this means that the display panel lights up anytime your wrist faces upward, for example while typing an email on a laptop.

The Motorola smartwatch looks much better than the other smartwatches available in the market right now, thanks to the level of detail given to the design. The brushed metal finish and leather strap look good, and you can change watch-faces anytime you want by simply long-pressing the display and selecting the one you like; Moto 360 comes with seven pre-loaded watch-faces and a few more are available on Google's Android Wear marketplace.

Like a regular watch, Moto 360 has a button on the sides, but it does not change the time on the watch. Instead, long-pressing this button opens up a menu that shows all the features of the smartwatch, such as doing a Google search, counting steps, tracking the heart rate etc.

At the bottom on the screen is a black bar that disrupts the circular design of the watch-face. This black bar houses the ambient sensors and though it makes engineering sense, it does not make any design sense at all. This bar looks awkward and takes a lot away from the overall look of the smartwatch.

In terms of design, the size of the watch's dial and the weight of the whole watch matter a lot. In Moto 360's case, the metal-finished watch does not feel too heavy on the wrist. The dial itself does not look too big on the wrist of a man, but is pretty big on the more svelte wrists of women.

How it works
Basically, Moto 360 is just like any other Android Wear smartwatch — it brings all of your smartphone's notifications to your wrist. All of your new notifications, such as SMSs, WhatsApp messages, emails, updates or alerts by apps etc, come on your wrist as soon as you pair it with an Android 4.3 or 4.4 smartphone.

Apart from the standard Android Wear capabilities, Moto 360 has step counter (pedometer), heart rate monitor and wireless charging. Both Google and Motorola's heart rate monitoring apps are pre-loaded, so you can choose which you want to use. You can also set goals for yourself on Moto 360 if you use the step counter on your smartphone regularly. The smartwatch will not be damaged if you dunk it in 1 metre of water for up to half an hour; instead of such dips in the pool, we found ourselves getting Moto 360 wet while washing the hands and as claimed, there was no damage.

You can interact with notifications on Moto 360 by tapping on the screen to read the notification or swiping it away to remove it. Once removed from the smartwatch, you cannot check out the notification again except by opening the app on the phone manually. Oddly, the notification is not removed from the paired smartphone even after you remove it from Moto 360.

In case of SMSs, WhatsApp messages and emails, tapping on the notification on Moto 360 shows not only the current message from the sender but your whole thread with the person. However, the smartwatch does not allow you to read another conversation on the same app through the notification. You can, however, open the app on your smartphone by selecting the option on the smartwatch.

Responding to the messages and emails is a challenge as the voice recognition system of Moto 360 largely failed to recognize our voice during the review period; a couple of people in the office tried the hands-free voice recognition system, but with no luck.

In case you were wondering, Moto 360 does not let you make or receive phone calls independently. It will only show that you have an incoming call and allow you to receive it, but you will need to take the phone out of your pocket to actually talk to the caller.

There are certain tasks you need to set the groundwork for in the case of Android Wear smartwatches. For example, if you want your plane tickets' QR code to show up on the watch's face, you need to set the reminder yourself (unless Google Now does for you automatically).

The problem is that Android Wear is still a work in progress, so you face a few problems while operating it. The app selection is limited, you cannot open an app on the smartwatch directly unless there is an active notification for it, navigating within the app is very limited still, among others. This hampers the overall Android Wear experience, and though we realize such features will take a little time to come, we still believe that the asking price of Rs 17,999 for Moto 360 is too much.

Battery life
Moto 360, sadly, does not have all-day battery life if used to its full capabilities. During our review period, the maximum battery life that the smartwatch delivered (with ambient light sensor turned on) was 17 hours, while the average period was in the range of 14 and 15 hours. Turn the ambient light sensor off and you get over a day of battery life. This is decent for a small 320mAh battery, but most people are not used to charging a watch every night and it is a small inconvenience.

Unlike other smartwatches in the market, the Motorola model does not have any microUSB port ruining the design. Instead, it relies of wireless charging (magnetic induction type) to recharge the battery. Just plop the smartwatch on the wireless charger and the battery will start charging instantly.

Do I really need it?
Frankly, no wearable device today is good enough to be a gadget that you cannot live without, Moto 360 included. This smartwatch, at least initially, felt like just a complementary device to the smartphone, making it easier for us to check out what's going on with our smartphone. That's what we thought after using it for a week — it's only a convenience that we can live without.

But surprisingly, once we stopped using the smartwatch, it was actually missed. The convenience it provides just makes everything easier. Taking the phone out of the pocket each time to see who called or messaged felt like a huge chore after a week of checking it out by simply turning the wrist. Similarly, using Google Maps on the small screen is also convenient while travelling. It's just so simple!

So should I spend Rs 17,999 on it?

Frankly, you shouldn't. The smartwatch is fun to use and makes keeping track of what's up you're your phone very convenient, but Rs 17,999 is still a lot of money to spend on a gadget that still has room for improvement. Smartwatches, and wearables as a category, are still evolving and the initial version of Android Wear as well as Moto 360 is still not as essential as we would like it to be.

However, you can go for it only if you are an early adopter or if you really, really want the best smartwatch in the market today on your wrist.

Do you think filing a patent is too costly and time consuming? Follow the Lean Patenting Strategy

Do you think filing a patent is too costly and time consuming? Follow the Lean Patenting Strategy

This is the third article in our series on IP rights for startups, here are the first two:
1) Startups, know your IP rights
2) Infringing on 3rd Party IP rights
patentsAre you bootstrapping, with a vision of having a multi-country corporate business in the next few years?
Are you building a patent portfolio to sustain the business?
No? Is cost the reason behind it?
Well, if we tell you that you can plan your finances to get maximum protection from patents, does it sound promising? If yes, than please read ahead for a lean Patenting recipe’s secret.
When you are bootstrapping and have conceptualized a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), it is the right time to begin with protecting the product. However, at this stage you are still burning your money and the MVP might not have been tested, so the investment should be minimal. To protect your MVP, many legal systems throughout the world provide a tool called “Provisional Patent Application”, which is provisionally filed with minimum details to meet the requirements of Patent laws. Commonly, the legal cost and professional fees involved are quite low at this stage.  It is important to note that a provisional application is nothing other than saving the date for your MVP. This application will not be examined, nor will it be published, it is just kept with the patent office as evidence that your product has been conceptualized. In the case where your product goes through substantial changes during the Testing or Prototyping phases, it will not be a big burden as you have only invested a minimal cost. With the changed product, you can start afresh with protection.
Few months down the line, you may have begun the process of Prototyping and Testing the product, and may have also begun with Angel funding. At this stage, you may still be unaware of your commercialization and growth strategy worldwide. So, it shall be difficult for you to determine which countries you are targeting for patent protection. As we have mentioned in our first article, a patent provides protection only in the jurisdiction in which the patent has been granted. So in cases where multi-county protection is aimed for, a patent needs to be filed in every country that protection is sought for. To deal with this scenario, another tool is provided, the “Patent Cooperation Treaty”. You may file for a PCT application using your provisional priority, and this provides a wait period of 30 months from the provisional filing date, within which you may decide all the countries in which you aim to protect your invention.
Once your start-up has completed about 2 to 2.5 years, you would have a clearer picture about your business expansion strategies. You would have also received another round of Angel funding or Venture Capital funding, making it possible to move towards worldwide patent filing strategies as there would be sufficient finances.
This strategy helps you stretch your finances further and also provides sufficient time to work on your commercialization and business strategies, which eventually will lead to a healthy Patent portfolio for your start-up over the years.
The above strategy is one of several different lean strategies; however a specific strategy should be formulated keeping in mind the nature of business, technical area, finances, etc. of your own start-up.

Building a global B2B startup – Learnings from Krish, founder & CEO of ChargeBee

Building a global B2B startup – Learnings from Krish, founder & CEO of ChargeBee

yourstory_Chargebee
ChargeBee is a billing platform for your subscription business. Their aim is to assist their clients manage, retain and grow their business. ChargeBee is a Tech30 alumnus that has raised two rounds of funding from Accel Partners in 2014 and private angel investors in the US in 2012. YourStory got in touch with Krish Subramanian, Co-founder of ChargeBee to learn about their progress.
Growth over the last couple of years
Talking about the growth, Krish says,
At the time we showcased in TechSparks 2013, we were a small team of about 10 folks with about 15-20 beta customers. Two years hence, we have hundreds of customers worldwide with some of the fastest growing startups as customers in SaaS and e-commerce. We are 30-member strong now with some of the best minds working on the problem.
ChargeBee processes over $50 M USD of customer revenue annually and are growing at a very healthy pace in terms of their revenue and processed transaction revenue.
Going global, some tips for upcoming entrepreneurs
yourstory_Chargebee_InsideArticle (1)
“If your startup is solving a globally relevant problem, going global is a no-brainer decision as you will find that the sales cycles are much shorter and customers are used to Do it Yourself (DIY) solutions,” says Krish Subramanian
His suggestions in the context of B2B solutions.
-It is much easier when you have the entire world to sell to, than a limited demography. Of course, it will stretch you in terms of time zones, but that is the fun.
-Respond to enquiries in minutes and thrill them with detailed emails. Let your passion come through with fairly detailed, helpful customer support than ‘salesy’ emails. Everyone loves a genuine helpful conversation. This is the key to winning trust of potential customers.
-Invest in a clean, well-documented open API. Lots of customers like to read up & do the integration themselves.
-As an extension of that, build lots of tutorials, videos and help documentation. Facilitate and get out of the way.
-Measure engagement of everything, including videos using tools like Wistia. Google Analytics is your friend to understand which documents are being read most to clean up and fix things.
-Lot of us ignore the importance of investing in a clean TOS, Privacy Policy & good website copy. These small things matter a lot if you need to build trust.
-Most underestimated aspect is content marketing. Creating educational original content for your target audience is the best way to build SEO & get your company  before your potential customers. It all adds up over time. So start pushing engaging and useful content early.
Krish feels that there are a hundred more small things that an entrepreneur in this segment could do, but these are absolute must in his opinion to come across as genuine and trusted to sell globally from here.
Current challenges, what’s on the roadmap?
The biggest challenge in growth stage is to strike a fine balance between needs of existing customers, while staying honest to the company’s product roadmap. It takes a lot of time to learn what to say ‘NO’ to.
Krish feels that for a vertical solution like theirs, it is very tempting to address all the markets because customers tend to come from everywhere. They currently focus on very specific markets. They have penned down their thoughts about managing product roadmap & delivering scale / features for existing customers here.
Thoughts on TechSparks and the experience
“Being showcased in an event like TechSparks is a great validation in your early stages. We need more of that in India. It also helps generate lot of inbound interest from folks who want to join your organisation and of course potential investors,” says Krish.
Krish also went on to share how networking at events in early days really helps get the word out in the ecosystem and help find some enthusiastic early adopters, without too much difficulty

Tim said “he is looking forward to that day” where the company will be shipping AppleWatch, which is early next year. Apple didn’t announce fixed date for shipment.
Apple’s senior vice president of software, Craig Federighi, started by taking a dig on Android comparing what iOS8 did in 26 days v/s 311 days of kitkat to move their respective users to the latest mobile OS. He said almost 95% of iOS users are running latest operating system(iOS7 & 8). Here are is the break down. 48% users have upgraded to iOS 8, 46% uses iOS 7 and 6% are on older versions.  Also Camera Roll has resurfaced on iOS 8.1, it was removed in iOS 8. The beta version of iCloud Photo Library lets uses store all of their photos from all their devices in the cloud on its original file size without downscaling. iOS 8.1 will also be launching in next week on October 20, 2014.
Apple has said developers will get access to TouchID API.
Swift is entirely new programming language developed by Apple for developers to develop for iOS.  Craig said “IBM, has completely embraced Swift for their enterprise application development.” He also added “The will be lots of new Swift programmers being minted every day as major universities has partnered with Apple to teach Swift”   Apple Watch

Mac OS X

OS X 10.10 Yosemite, is available for download today for free for anyone with Mac machine. The Yosemite update includes Spotlight that could search the web, Spotlight suggestions, native social sharing from the Safari browser. Access to the tabs that you’ve opened across all your devices. Mail Drop, Continuity where your devises are aware of each other.  “The best remote you have is the one on your wrist.” You can use your Apple Watch to control your slides on the screen. OS-X-10.10

iPad

Apple unveiled its thinnest ever tablet, the iPad Air 2 ( 6.1mm (0.24in) thick). Tim said about what they tried to do with the new iPad “Packing up more and more power and performance. It is transforming the way we work, play and learn and communicate.” He also remarked the company has sold more iPads(quarter a billion) in the first four year more than any other product s in the history of Apple.  iPads have dedicated 675,000 apps on the AppStore. The iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini has come with Touch ID, finger print sensors. Apple has not put NFC in the new iPad Air or the iPad Mini. Whereas iPad Air 2 is armed with A8X chip which is 40% faster than its predecessor, and graphics are 2.5xfaster. Retina iMac Apple has also showed off the new Retina iMac. It comes with 27in (68.6cm) screen with a resolution of 5K, the highest in the industry. The retina iMac’s 5210 by 2880 pixels offers 5x detail of a “full HD” 1080p television. Apple iOS 8.1

The Apple SIM card

Apple has created a SIM card that lets users switch between multiple cellular networks – AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. This will be a God send feature for frequent travelers.
Apple said its website “The Apple SIM gives you the flexibility to choose from a variety of short-term plans from select carriers in the U.S. and UK right on your iPad. So whenever you need it, you can choose the plan that works best for you — with no long-term commitments. And when you travel, you may also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of your trip.” Apple SIM
If Apple ties up with more carries and rolls out this in more countries, it could make SIM swapping obsolete for international travelers.
Two needles in the hay stack of today’s announcements: Spotlight web search and Continuity.
These two are very interesting features. Search is Google’s territory; first siri has tried to encroach in the zone. Now Apple has another trick under its sleeves – direct web search from spotlight. Would be very interesting to see the impact of this on Apple vs Google war in the future. The other one is continuity: All your devices talks to each other and know what you are doing. The task you’ve started on phone/iPad follows you on iMac later and continues exactly from where you left off. This further expands the deep integration between iOS and OS X.
