Panasonic India to Launch Eluga Series of Smartphones on Wednesday

Panasonic is all set to launch its Eluga series of smartphones in India. The company has been teasing the Eluga series for a while and now it has finally sent out invites for the event scheduled on Wednesday, July 30.
The Eluga series of smartphones were first introduced by the company in 2012 before being discontinued. Panasonic had launched the Eluga DL1 and the Eluga Power for the European market. It seems the company is looking to revive the series with the India launch. Panasonic in its invite describes the Eluga series as "Elegance for a new generation", but we don't know what segment the company will be targeting with new range of smartphones, or indeed the exact phones that the company will unveil.
So far Panasonic has been actively launching the P and T series of smartphones in India. Last week, the company had launched three dual-SIM smartphones Panasonic T41Panasonic P41 andPanasonic P61 running Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS. The devices are priced at Rs. 7,990, Rs. 11,990 and Rs. 14,990 respectively.
All three smartphones are powered by an unspecified quad-core processor clocked at 1.3GHz.
The Panasonic T41 comes with by a 4.5-inch IPS display with FWVGA (480x854 pixels) resolution. The smartphone runs on 512MB RAM and 4GB inbuilt storage with expandability option up to 32GB via microSD card. The Panasonic P41 houses a 5-inch IPS display with qHD (540x960 pixels) resolution. It comes with 1GB of RAM alongside 8GB of inbuilt storage with expandability option up to 32GB via microSD card. Finally, the Panasonic P61 features a 6-inch IPS display with HD (720x1280 pixels) resolution. The smartphone comes with 1GB of RAM, 16GB of inbuilt storage with expandability option up to 32GB via microSD card.

Lava mobiles on Monday announced the Android 4.4.2 KitKat OTA update for its Iris 504Q+ smartphone. The company had launched the smartphone with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box, priced at Rs. 13,990. Notably the company has also reduced the price to Rs. 11,900.
Starting Monday, Lava Iris 504Q+ smartphone users will get a notification to upgrade the OS toAndroid 4.4.2 KitKat. Users can also manually check for the update from Settings > About Phone > System UpdatesLava has noted that the it is essential to have a microSD card inserted and mounted on the device, as the update will be "downloaded on the memory card only."
According to the company, the update brings a new dialer app that lets users automatically prioritise contacts according to the most frequently dialled numbers in the phone book. Additionally, whenever a user gets a call from an unknown number, the phone will look for matches from businesses with a local listing on Google Maps.
The Lava Iris 504Q+ is the successor to company's popular Iris 504Q smartphone launched last year. Just like the Iris 504Q, the 504Q+ comes with dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) standby support. It features a 5-inch (720x1280 pixels) HD IPS OGS (One Glass Solution) display and offers a pixel density of 294ppi.
It is powered by a quad-core processor (unspecified chipset) though it clocks at a higher speed of 1.3GHz alongside Mali 400 MP2 and 1GB of RAM. The Iris 504Q+ comes with 8GB of inbuilt storage, which is further expandable up to 32GB via microSD. The smartphone comes with a 10-megapixel autofocus rear camera, which features an Exmor R sensor and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. On the connectivity front, the Iris 504Q+ includes 3G, Wi-Fi, Micro-USB, and Bluetooth options. It packs a 2000mAh battery, which is rated to deliver up to 732 hours of standby time.

LG on Monday introduced an Android hybrid device called LG Tab Book. The tablet-cum-notebook was unveiled in LG's home country, though the company did not unveil the pricing, availability and global roll-out details of the device.
On the design front, LG Tab Book with Android OS looks similar to the Tab Book 2 that was launched at CES earlier this year, which runs Windows.
Just like the Tab Book 2, the new Android hybrid (model number 11TA740-GA50K) sports 11.6-inch full-HD IPS display touchscreen with support for 10-point touch control and slide-out QWERTY keyboard. LG has just replaced the Windows home button with the Android home button in Tab Book.
The LG Tab Book runs Android 4.2.2 out-of-the-box. It packs a fourth generation Core i5 4200U (Turbo 2.6GHz, Cache 3MB) with Intel HD Graphics 4400. The device comes with one RAM slot packing 4GB memory with it, while there is no word on the maximum support size.
LG Tab Book (11TA740-GA50K) comes with a 128GB SSD hard drive storage with support for microSD card (unknown). Other ports on the device include two USB 3.0 ports and a standard HDMI port for connectivity. Dimensions of the Tab Book are almost similar to the Windows variant at 286x192x16.7mm. The tablet hybrid weighs 1.05 kg.

I am not here to sack people, that’s not my style. I believe in continuity and if you look around our company’s senior management team, most have been with me for years, Dilip Shanghvi, promoter, Sun Pharma, told senior Ranbaxy executives in a closed-door meeting at the Taj Lands End in Mumbai, called at a short notice in the second week of July.
Ranbaxy country heads from different parts of the world had gathered in Delhi for their periodic performance review, and were in for a surprise when they were summoned for a meeting with their soonto-be chief.
I may assign new roles to people and do not expect them to be masters at their job. But they should constantly learn on their jobs, Shanghvi is learnt to have told them.
Dressed in his characteristic crisp white shirt, Shanghvi spoke softly and said he preferred to take questions rather than launching a long speech. This was the first exchange of the kind between Sun’s top boss and senior brass of Ranbaxy since the Mumbai-based drug firm announced in April that it will acquire the rival from its Japanese parent Daiichi Sankyo in the largest domestic pharma transaction worth $4 billion.
PEOPLE & PERCEPTIONS
Shanghvi said that every time a division in his company underperformed, and an assessment of the cause was carried out,the company realised it was because of losing some valuable people.
So, I don’t believe in losing people. And when it comes to hiring, he said he either hires the best, or those from whom he thinks he can extract the best. On speculations around possible workforce trimming in Ranbaxy post deal closure, Shanghvi tried to dispel anxieties of the Ranbaxy senior management.
“All my life, my focus has been to grow the business. The need to expand this business will require many more people than what we currently have,” he is understood to have said.
“What I have realised is that when we have disturbances, the focus is diverted more into managing those disturbances rather than managing growth,” he said, assuring that whatever Sun will do in Ranbaxy post integration, it will do so with the least amount of disturbance.
Admitting that there’s a perception that Sun and Ranbaxy do business in different ways, he said, “I know those sitting in Ranaxy have certain perceptions about Sun and those at Sun have some perception about Ranbaxy, some of which could be true, but many of them are far from real.”
He conveyed that these perception gaps would be cleared after the integration.
Shanghvi further said that the Ranbaxy acquisition is very important to him because Sun has never done a deal of this size and complexity in the past. He also emphasised that he doesn’t want to go wrong on anything, and doesn’t want to be unfair in any way.
And the thing he would strive to do is to create an apolitical environment where people can be rewarded after objective reviews.
TARO LESSONS
Citing his record at Taro, a previous acquisition in Israel, which Sun has managed to turn around, Shanghvi pointed out to Ranbaxy executives that besides appointing Kal Sundaram, the chief executive officer, he hasn’t made any significant people changes in the company in the last four years.
Soon after the deal, seven-eight top executives at Taro left after the senior management triggered change of control agreement, Shanghvi said. “At the time we had just met second and third line people in the company. We decided against hiring from outside and filled the vacuum at top by promoting existing employees,” he said, according to people privy to the event.
He said at the time of taking over about 3% of Taro’s turnover was spent on airlifting drugs from Israel — the manufacturing base — to the US market largely because of the production delays, something the Taro employees fixed after being given the responsibility to do so, which became one of the many critical inputs in the business picking up.
Without much significant investment, Shanghvi said the service levels in this area improved to 98% on last assessment from 90% during pre-acquisition times.
ACQUISITION, A LEARNING OPPORTUNITY
Reminiscing about the days when he was engaged to marry, he related incidents about how he tried to impress his wouldbe wife by telling her that if they ran the business well, they could earn Rs 1 crore a year.
At the time, he had set up one plant at Vapi in Gujarat, which generated monthly sales of Rs 60,000. Citing the difference between his aspiration and achievement, he asked Ranbaxy executives never to underestimate themselves.
“I believe the people I work with are far more capable than what they think or what I think,” he said.
“We never get into acquisitions with the mindset that we know everything. Every experience has taught us valuable lessons,” he said about the nine-odd companies Sun had acquired in the last decade, adding that he is confident that even the Ranbaxy acquisition will help them learn many lessons.
A Sun spokesperson refused to comment on the matter and Ranbaxy didn’t respond to an ET mail seeking comments on the meeting.

MAC OS X
For MAC OS X users, a US$ 19 app called Cocktail (www.maintain.se/cocktail) allows you to schedule maintenance on a daily or weekly basis. You can even customise the look and features of finder, dock, login window and modify various hidden settings. Nearly 25 per cent of the BPO/ITeS candidate base in Delhi NCR rates salary as the key feature of this sector, according toJobBuzz.com data.
Overall, candidates are not very happy with the salary offered to them, Delhi NCR is an exception. Only 16 per cent of the total candidate base in the BPO/ITeS sector rate salary to be its best feature.
Nearly 19 per cent of Chennai based candidates rated salary to be the best feature of the BPO/ITeS sector, while only 10 per cent candidates in Pune are happy with the sector’s compensation structure.
Senior level candidates seem to be most satisfied with the salary offered by the sector. Nearly 23 per cent candidates belonging to 10-20 and over 20 years experience category rate compensation as its best feature. Candidates with 0-2 years experience, in the BPO/ITeS sector, are least satisfied with the salary offered by this sector.
JobBuzz.com data further indicates that male candidates are rewarded more than female candidates. Of the entire male candidate base in BPO/ITeS sector, nearly 25 per cent rated salary to be its best feature. Female candidates, on the other hand, are not very happy. Only 19 per cent of the entire female candidate base, rated salary as the high point of working in this sector.
Over 40 per cent of the director/VP level candidate base in the BPO/ITeS sector, rated salary to be the best feature of this sector, followed by senior manager to GM level candidates. Executive to assistant level candidates are least satisfied with the remuneration offered to them.
The BPO/ITeS sector rewards marketing/media planning candidates the most. Of their entire candidate base, nearly 27 per cent rated salary to be the best feature of this sector, followed by operations/customer service/telecalling/back-end professionals (23%). HR and administration candidates are the least satisfied with the salary offered to them.
Overall, 40 per cent junior and middle level employees recommend working for the BPO/ITeS industry. Genpact Pvt Ltd and Wipro Technologies Ltd are the most recommended companies by the entire BPO workforce.
With the BPO industry moving up the value chain to Business Process Management, there are ample opportunities in all sectors varying from the field of medicine, legal, logistics, equity research and business research. The compensation is also varied, based on whether it is a field role or not.
However, the transition from being a low end support to a full service value provider has opened doors to huge opportunities in the Indian BPO sector. Pay for performance model is actively used in the sector, a clear differentiator for top-end performance.

Hexaware Technologies said it has appointed HCL Tech's R Srikrishna as its CEO.

MUMBAI: Hexaware Technologies said it has appointed HCL Tech's R Srikrishna as its CEO, less than a year after Barings Private Equity Asia bought in a majority stake in the Mumbai-based information technology company. 

Since the acquisition by Barings, Hexaware's growth had faltered and the company brought in a consultancy firms to advise it on boosting margins and to improve its sales effectiveness. Earlier this month, ET had reported that Srikrishna would be taking over as CEO of Hexaware, a management change being pushed by the company's private equity owners. 

"Hexaware has a great foundation of highly talented employees, deep customer relationships and differentiated solutions. We will build on this foundation to create a powerful organization for the future; a future where insights from data, consumerism, mobility, sensors, security and cloud take centre stage." Srikrishna said in a statement. 

Srikrishna, who is sometimes called Keech, built HCL infrastructure services offering from scratch to a $1.3 billion business. He also led the healthcare business for HCL, where he focused on building solutions for insurers and the pharma industry. Healthcare and insurance account for 15% of Hexaware's revenue, and infrastructure management service contributes to 6%. 

"Keech's track record of identifying business opportunities ahead of competition, his ability to engage clients and build an organization capable of sustained growth, make him uniquely qualified to lead Hexaware." Atul Nishar, Chairman of Hexaware said.

PUNE: When Praveen Narayan Dusane first started driving an auto-rickshaw in this crowded college town, he had to hustle for every rupee. He could wait hours at a rickshaw stand for passengers. He fought with other drivers and haggled with passengers over the fares. Typically, he earned just 300 rupees, or roughly $5, during a 12-hour shift. 

Now Dusane simply checks the text messages on his cellphone for his schedule, with pickups usually coming every hour or so. Business is so brisk that he recently bought an apartment for $33,000 and can afford to send his three school-age daughters to an English-language school. 

"Earlier, I had to sometimes wait all day for a ride, and even then it was up to your luck the kind of fare you got," Dusane said. "Now it's like you can see the money in front of you." 

It is the advantage of the algorithm. 

In a country clogged with congestion, a handful of startups are using technology to more easily connect auto-rickshaw drivers with customers — an Indian twist to Uber and Lyft, the taxi-hailing apps. 

Dusane's employer, Autowale, uses a program to map out potential routes and maximize pickups. AutoRaja has a dial-an-auto service in Chennai. In Bangalore, mGaadi offers rickshaw bookings via its website and app. 

The three-wheeled, often black and yellow auto-rickshaws are ubiquitous in India, where public buses are rather abysmal, subways are limited and taxis are few and expensive. People can hail auto-rickshaws off the streets, but getting one depends on a combination of negotiating skill and luck. Most drivers tend to charge a flat, inflated rate, instead of going by the meter, and often turn down prospective customers if the distance is too short or to an area from which they might not get a fare back. 

Autowale is trying to make the process easier by offering rickshaws on demand. Customers can request a rickshaw through the company's app or website, as well as through the more old-fashioned method, its call center. Passengers pay a convenience fee of about 33 cents per ride. 

Although Uber came to India in September, the service is expensive and doesn't compete in the same space. As in the United States, Uber, which operates in six Indian cities including New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, focuses on the taxi market. 

Autowale doesn't have all the gadgetry of Uber or Lyft. It doesn't use GPS, and most drivers don't have smartphones, which can be expensive. Instead, the founders created an algorithm that predicts an auto-rickshaw's potential route for the day, and assigns pickups accordingly. They serve up the driver's schedule via basic text messages. 

The company promises drivers higher and more predictable income, along with fewer dead miles, those without a passenger on board. In return, the company receives a commission of 10 to 15% from the drivers. Autowale, which isn't profitable yet, reported revenues of about $335,000 last year. 

The first version of Autowale — founded by Janardan Prasad and Mukesh Jha, friends since college — was a flop. 

They initially developed a network of 400 auto-rickshaws across Pune. But they had too many rickshaws and not enough passengers for the unknown service. 

"What had failed was a lack of commitment on both sides," Prasad said. "It was kind of like dating. You have to commit to try to make it work." 

In summer 2011, they revamped their model and started out with five drivers, promising them a specific income, even if they didn't get enough passengers. To commuters, they promised an auto-rickshaw if they booked one. 

"We said to them, work with us for six months, and we'll give you the rides and the fares and improve your income," Prasad said. Within three months they had 75 drivers in their system and were executing up to a hundred trips a day. 

Autowale now works with 850 drivers — including about 250 regulars — and ferries about 100,000 passengers a year. After a successful pilot in Bangalore, it is planning to introduce service there, and in three other Indian cities, as soon as it can raise the money for its expansion. 

Autowale has faced its share of growing pains. As the customer base has increased, there have been quality concerns. 

Satish Chandra, 77, who has been a regular customer since 2012, complains of rude drivers, late pickups and inadequate responses from the call center. "The service has deteriorated." 

Prasad said the company had resolved some of the earlier problems and was also focused on driver training. At its office, which doubles as a training space, Autowale conducts regular workshops. For example, they had to teach some older drivers how to read text messages and how to get a number from a text to call a customer. 

"All they knew were two buttons — green to connect and red to disconnect a call," Prasad said. 

Training sessions have also included some basic phrases in English: "good morning," "you're welcome" or "have a good journey" when dropping off a passenger at the airport. 

One of the main areas of focus has been teaching drivers the concept of customer retention. For Autowale drivers, they instruct, the chances of encountering repeat customers are high. And if they don't behave properly, they dilute the brand and their own incomes. 

"The key is to earn with respect and dignity and in a professional manner," Prasad said

Baidu, the most popular search engine in China, has revealed it is also working on automated vehicles, but, unlike its western equivalent Google, it wants drivers to maintain the option of control. 

The deputy director of Baidu's Institute of Deep Learning, Kai Yu, told The Next Web he envisions a future where drivers can sit back and enjoy the ride or take the wheel themselves. 

He said: "This is actually an intelligent assistant collecting data from road situations and then operating locally. 

"We don't call this a driverless car. I think a car should be helping people, not replacing people, so we call this a highly autonomous car." 

Like a horse 

Yu told the site its approach was deliberately different to the one being pioneered by Google in the United States. 

Unlike Google's vehicles, Baidu's cars will have a steering wheel, accelerator and break pedal, rather than the sensors and software used by Google. 

"Philosophically we have a fundamental difference to look at this type of things," he added. 

"I think in the future, a car should not totally replace the driver but should really give the driver freedom. Freedom means the car is intelligent enough to operate by itself, like a horse, and make decisions under different road situations. Whenever the driver wants to resume control, you can do that. It's like riding on a horse, rather than just sitting in a car where you only have a button."

NEW DELHI: CBI has registered a preliminary enquiry (PE) against internet giant Google over Mapathon 2013, an event organized by the US company, for allegedly violating laws by mapping sensitive areas and defence installations, prohibited by law. 

The CBI registered the PE based on a complaint filed by Surveyor General of India's office to the Union Home Ministry in which Google was accused of had been indulging in activities of mapping several areas which were not included in the maps of the country, official sources said here. 

The internet giant had not taken permission from Survey of India, country's official mapping agency, before organizing a mapping competition in February-March 2013 when they asked citizens to map their neighbourhoods, especially details related to hospitals and restaurants. 

Alarmed by Mapathon, the Survey of India (SoI), India's national survey and mapping organisation under the Department of Science and Technology, asked the internet giant to share its details where they found that there were several coordinates having details of sensitive defence installations which are out of the public domain. 

Highlighting the violations to the Home Ministry, the SoI said only it was mandated to undertake 'restricted' category surveying and mapping, and no other government or private organizations or individual are authorized to do so. 

As per the National Map Policy 2005, "the responsibility for producing, maintaining and disseminating the topographic map database of the whole country, which is the foundation of all spatial data, vests with the Survey of India". 

Responding to queries, Google India said, "We are in touch with relevant authorities and take national regulations and security very seriously. We are not aware of any privacy issues and have nothing more to share at this point in time.
"
