Trai will soon fix the minimum download speed the telecom operators will have to deliver for wireless data services.

NEW DELHI: Sick of dead slow internet connection on mobile? Relief is on the way as regulator Trai will soon fix the minimum download speed the telecom operators will have to deliver for wireless data services. 

"The Authority (Trai) has been receiving a number of complaints from consumers regarding the poor download speed experienced by them. The Authority after examining the issue felt that there is now a need to mandate the 'minimum download speed' for the wireless data services," Trai said in its latest consultation process. 

At present, there is no binding regulation on telecom operators to deliver wireless service at a particular minimum speed. 

3G operators promise mobile Internet speed in the range of 7.1 megabit per second (mbps) to 21 mbps. At 7.1 mbps speed, a mobile user should be able to download a full-length movie in around 12-14 minutes. 

But invariable, it takes around 40 minutes to download a a file size equivalent to that of a movie on the best network. 

The minimum speed reported by operators to Trai lies in the range of 399 kbps (minimum broadband speed is 512 kbps) to 2.48 mbps. 

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has found the minimum speed delivered by an operators doesn't even qualify to be called broadband. 

The wireless data services include mobile internet and broadband services like 2G, 3G and those offered using dongles. 

The regulator is of the view that the minimum download speed for 3G and CDMA EVDO service should be 1 megabit per second with 95% success rate. For GSM and CDMA 2G the minimum speed should be at 56 kilobit per second and for CDMA high speed data it is 512 kbps. 

Trai has sought public views on its consultation by May 5 and counter comments on it by May 1

The 5.5-inch version of Apple iPhone has been delayed till 2015 according to a new report.
NEW DELHI: iPhone fans may have to wait more to get their hands on the large-screen version of Apple's flagship smartphone. 

The 5.5-inch version of Apple iPhone has been delayed till 2015 according to a report by Taiwan's Industrial and Commercial Times. The report mentions that the Cupertino giant is struggling to find a battery that could fit in the new iPhone's thin form factor. Earlier, an analyst had suggested that the 5.5-inch iPhone would be launched in the fourth quarter of 2014. However, a Reuters report had stated that the 5.5-inch version of the iPhone could be delayed because of difficulties with in-cell production technology. 

As per the report, Apple suppliers are calling the 5.5-inch iPhone, 'iPhone Air' and not iPhone 6, but it's not certain that this will be the final name for the smartphone. It won't be surprising if Apple adds the 'Air' suffix to the name of the phone given that it is rumoured to sport a very thin profile. 

iPhone 6 is said to have a 64-bit A8 processor, 1GB RAM, LTPS LCD display panels, optical image stabilization, Touch ID fingerprint sensor, metal casings and NFC. The upcoming iPhones are expected to be 6.5-7mm thick and have 10-20% narrower bezels around the screen. Only the 64GB version of the 5.5-inch iPhone will have sapphire glass, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

While the Indian Premier League is having a hard time in the Supreme Court having to defend itself against allegations of betting, the two most affected teams by the scandal - Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals - played out a classic with CSK coming out on top by seven runs thanks to Ravindra Jadeja's brilliant 4 for 33 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday night.

When CSK posted 140 for 6 on the board, RR looked on course for their second win in three matches. However, things turned out differently for them with Abhishek Nayar's foolish run-out in the first over proving to be a big portent of defeat. Sanju Samson hit Ben Hilfenhaus for two attractive sixes, however, to put RR in the ascendancy before Ajinkya Rahane's (15) careless shot against R Ashwin opened the floodgates for CSK. It was completely Jadeja's show thereafter.

The India left-arm spinner bowled a nagging line to account for Shane Watson (7), Samson (16), Steven Smith (19) and Tim Southee (4) to put RR completely out of the contest. While Wastson and Smith picked out Hilfenhaus and Faf du Plessis at long-off, Samson gave a simple return catch. Amidst Jadeja's excellent bowling, medium pacer Mohit Sharma and Ishwar Pandey also got rid of allrounders Stuart Binny (8) and James Faulkner (4).

Rajat Bhatia (23) and Dhawal Kulkarni (28) tried to take the fight to the opposition but their efforts weren't enough as RR were bowled out for 133 in 19.5 overs. RR needed 24 runs in the last over and when Kulkarni hit Ashwin for two big sixes, it looked like the match was going the other way. With nine needed off two balls, Pravin Tambe ran himself out failing to respond to batsman Kulkarni's call for two in time, resulting in a narrow defeat.

Earlier, CSK got off to a flier largely because of Dwayne Smith whose power-hitting at the start made RR captain Watson's decision to field look bad at first. In the 35-run opening stand with Brendon McCullum, the West Indian scored the majority of the runs entertaining the spectators a great deal especially by means of two sixes, one over bowler James Faulkner's head, the other one off Southee, on debut for RR, over long-off.

After McCullum departed for six thanks to a brilliant running-backwards catch by Steven at midwicket off Faulkner, an undeterred Dwayne smacked Faulkner for four fours in the same over. Dwayne's dominance could be gauged from the fact that out of CSK's 59, fifty came off his bat. Against the run of play, however, the right-hander found Watson at mid-off off Stuart Binny's next ball after his fifty, bringing du Plessis at the crease to accompany Suresh Raina.

After Dwayne's (50 off 28 balls, 6x4s, 3x6s), CSK's innings didn't remain the same. A flurry of wickets saw them reduced from 59 for 2 to 101 for 5, thanks to some excellent bowling from Bhatia and legspinner Pravin Tambe. While Raina (4) fell to a slow cutter bowled by Bhatia, du Plessis (7) was unfortunate to be run-out at the non-striker's end as the ball deflected off bowler Bhatia's hand on to the stumps. Captain MS Dhoni (5) fell to a poor shot off Tambe as Faulkner took a simple catch at deep square leg.

Jadeja and Mithun Manhas tried to forge a partnership but all they could manage was 27 before Manhas (10) found Rahane off the bowling of fellow Delhiman Bhatia. Do what they would, Jadeja (36*) and Ashwin (8*) failed to score quick runs in the last few overs, leaving RR bowlers to defend a modest target.

Brief score: CSK 140 for 6 in 20 overs (Smith 50, Jadeja 36*; Bhatia 2/13) beat RR 133 in 19.5 overs (Kulkarni 28*, Bhatia 23; Jadeja 4/33) by seven runs

Wipro will hire some 150 frontline sales staff in the United States in a singular development that denotes the company’s twin ambitions of boosting revenue and presenting a local face in its main market. Over the next 3-5 months, Wipro will have hired young college graduates as well as experienced sales veterans to build up its team in US cities where it currently does not have presence, people familiar with the company’s thinking said.
While Indian companies have been increasing their hiring in the United States, mainly employing software engineers, the Bangalore-based company’s decision to rapidly expand its sales team represents a new level of commitment to the United States. So far, Indians have been dominant in frontline sales, where salaries are lucrative and successful executives receive a share as bonus depending on the size of contracts they win.
“It helps when your front-end sales guy can talk about baseball, NBA and show some cultural closeness,” said Pradeep Mukherji, president and managing partner at Avasant, a Los Angeles-based technology advisory firm. “And then comes the political angle. Indian companies have to show they are job creators in America.”
Wipro CEO TK Kurien, whose strategy of reviving Wipro’s sales as the company looks to improve its growth rates after under-performing India’s IT services industry for nearly two years. Indian software services companies, which get more than half of their revenue from the US, have high hopes for that market this year as economic growth returns and large enterprises spend more on technology. For Wipro, particularly, its ability to increase market share in the US will be crucial to chief executive TK Kurien’s plans for gaining growth momentum.
Ashish Chopra, a vice president at Mumbai-based brokerage firm Motilal Oswal, said Wipro is refurbishing its sales strategy in overseas markets as it faces growing competition from larger rivals such as IBM and Accenture. “They are hiring local sales staff to offer better interface in front of clients and it has worked very well for companies like Cognizant.” The US contributed 50 per cent to Wipro’s sales during 2013-14.

40 per cent Indians are cautious about moving to the West for jobs due to the economic slowdown, according to a TimesJobs.com study. The study also indicates that highly skilled professionals are returning home seeking the economic opportunities that they once sought abroad. 
The study further pointed out that 34 per cent still prefer to move to west for a job, while 26 per cent would like to turn entrepreneurs. Out of the total respondents who mentioned that more Indians are seeking job opportunities in India, 28 per cent believe that maximum job opportunities are in IT/Telecom and Manufacturing sector.
Nearly 60 per cent of all the organisations also said that they are experiencing an influx of human capital from foreign shores in an earlier TimesJobs.com study. With 37 per cent of them reporting that the workforce inflow is maximum at the middle level.
TimesJobs.com data also indicates that there has been a drop in the number of applications for international positions. It dropped by 4 per cent in Jan’14 from an average 1 per cent increase in Nov-Dec’13. However, during Jan-Mar’14 it did register an overall increase on 3 per cent.
Why are they coming back?
Besides the fear of global uncertainty, it is the lure of job security and better future prospects that are bringing the talent back home, believe 58 per cent of the surveyed organisations. Good salary combined with benefits (extra allowances and perks is also playing a major role in bringing back the professionals to India, said 25 per cent of the employers in the TimesJobs.com study.
Where are the opportunities? 
Maximum job opportunities are in Manufacturing and Petrochemicals sector. Since, these sectors will be witnessing a huge number of workforce getting retired in the next 5 years, they are on a look out for experienced candidates, revealed experts in the TimesJobs.com RecruiteX report. For senior/leadership positions international exposure is deemed crucial, hence, the returning workforce has bright chances getting top jobs in these sectors. 
The Western perspective…
While the candidates are apprehensive about taking up a job in the international market, the global employers are still vying for Indian talent. TimesJobs.com data shows that across international locations, engineers, IT and accounting & finance professionals are most sought after. Demand is huge for talent with 5-10 years of experience, followed by 10-20 years of experience. UAE and North America have emerged as the most active global locations.
According to Jappreet Sethi, HR consultant and author of humanresourcesblog.in, “Whilst the western economy is slowly getting back on track, the number of people without a good job remains high. There are enough stories of Indians losing jobs and having to move back to base country for newer opportunities. India is seeing a good influx of talent, which is well adept in systems and processes.”
R P Yadav, chairman and managing director, Genius Consultants Ltd shares a similar point of view, “Job seekers are finding it difficult to get a lucrative job in the west. They are also apprehensive about the continuity of the job at hand. India seems a better place in terms of job security, plus they are closer home. Therefore, most of them are seeking a job in India and are cautious to move to the west.”

National carrier Air India stumbled on this archaic — but still in vogue — rule while preparing to have Wi-Fi on its aircraft.

NEW DELHI: Each time you board an aircraft to fly in India — or even overfly the country — you are journeying back in time. An iron curtain prohibits flyers in Indian airspace from enjoying Wi-Fi connectivity. While international flyers can log on to the net as soon as they are out of Indian airspace, desi ones can do so only before takeoff and after landing.

National carrier Air India stumbled on this archaic — but still in vogue — rule while preparing to have Wi-Fi on its aircraft. A team of senior officials recently met officials of Geneva-based OnAir, which provides both internet and mobile connectivity to almost 30 top airlines globally like British Airways, Emirates, Etihad, Singapore Airlines and Thai.

"We were shown a real time presentation of aircraft in air using Wi-Fi and/or mobile connectivity. All planes over India were shown in red, meaning they had neither of these two connections. We were told that India does not allow these two things in air and so even planes of foreign airlines equipped with Wi-Fi and/or mobile connectivity have to switch their systems off, while flying over the country," said a senior AI official. The airline was told that some private and foreign airlines had in the past sought permission to use Wi-Fi over Indian airspace but were not given the same.

The AI team was dejected by the discovery of this stumbling block on providing internet on its aircraft. Installing the onboard systems and providing the satellite-to-ground support was neither too expensive, nor a big technical challenge. But, being the national carrier of India, it did not make sense to opt for a technology that can be used only over foreign airspace and not on desi one.

"We are going to request the government to lift the ban on Wi-Fi in air and soon start a formal process with both the home and telecom ministry. Such a ban does not make sense when advanced countries actually take pride in ensuring flyers over their airspace remain connected all the time. Being a government company, we hope to get this ban lifted on our request. However, that process may take time and out plan of having internet in air is now delayed till that happens," said an official.

In fact, "no Wi-Fi" is not the only Stone Age rule in the air here. India allows use of personal electronic devices only during cruise phase, while DGCA rules prohibit switching on mobiles at all times inside an aircraft till it has landed and taxied off the active runway.

On the other hand, US and Europe have from January allowed their airlines to let passengers use personal electronic devices (PED) — including smartphones in aeroplane mode — in all durations of a flight. While they junked old fears that radio signals from PEDs can interfere with an aircraft's communications, navigation and other electronic systems, India still clings on to them.

DGCA's civil aviation requirement 3.1 clearly says: "No person shall use any electronic device, which intentionally transmits radio signals like mobile/cellular phones, amateur radio transceivers, etc at all times while on board an aircraft for the purpose of flight." It also cites a corresponding rule in Aircraft rule (29 B): "No person shall operate, nor shall the operator or the pilot-in-command of an aircraft allow the operation of any portable electronic device on board an aircraft in flight."

Archaic setup 

Installing the onboard systems and providing the satellite-to-ground support is neither too expensive, nor a big technical challenge

Tata Consultancy Services has signed a pact with Japan's Mitsubishi to create a Japanese software services provider.
NEW DELHI: India's largest software services firm Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has signed an agreement with Japanese major Mitsubishi Corporation to form a single IT services unit, the company said. 

The merger, in which TCS will hold 51% stake and Mitsubishi 49%, will create a new IT services company of significant scale in the Japanese market with annual turnover of over $600 million. 

"TCS Japan, IT Frontier Corporation (ITF) — Mitsubishi's 100 per cent IT subsidiary — and Nippon TCS Solution Center (NTSC), to merge as a single new entity," TCS said in a statement. 

TCS will hold 51% in the merged entity, while Mitsubishi will have 49% and the merged entities would be operational from July 2014, it added. 

ITF brings its long-standing relationships with Japanese corporations, talented workforce and competencies in industries like retail, distribution and trading, TCS said. 

This will complement TCS' deep domain knowledge, technology expertise and strong execution track record, it added. 

"This strategic transaction signifies our serious commitment to the Japan market. TCS will now have the scale, strong local presence and our full range of global capabilities to serve the Japanese corporations effectively and accelerate our growth in Japan market," TCS CEO and Managing Director N Chandrasekaran said. 

TCS' Global Network Delivery Model (GNDMTM) capabilities will also enable the Japanese corporations' globalisation ambitions, TCS said. 

The company will provide tremendous additional value to clients in Japan, while employees will secure the advantages of building their careers in a global organisation, it added.

Marshall, known for its amplifiers, has launched two speakers in the Indian market, Hanwell and Stanmore.
NEW DELHI: Marshall, known for its amplifiers, has launched two speakers in the Indian market, Hanwell and Stanmore at Rs 63,500 and Rs 35,000, respectively. The speakers are being distributed by Zemax India.

The Hanwell speaker supports just the 3.5mm headset jack input and looks like a mini guitar amp. The 100watt speaker is housed in a wooden cabinet and clad in black vinyl. It features an analog power switch and retro style controls for volume, bass and treble. The fret cloth and gold logo on the front of the speaker are borrowed from vintage Marshall amplifiers. The body is outlined with gold piping. Hanwell was originally launched in August 2012. The Limited Edition Hanwell speaker is dedicated to Jim Marshall, who is known to be the pioneer of guitar amplification and called 'the father of loud' or 'the lord of loud.'

The speaker will be available in limited quantities and will not be available once the allocated stocks for India are over, as per the company. Hanwell is sold out across the world, it adds.

The Stanmore is a compact stereo speaker that features Bluetooth connectivity, an RCA input jack, a 3.5mm jack and is also compatible with devices that have optical output, such as the Apple TV. The 200watt speaker has a vintage-looking front fret, brass details and features the Marshall script logo. This speaker also comes with analog interaction knobs. It was originally launched in September 2013.

MOUNTAIN VIEW: How's my kid going to get a job? There are few questions I hear more often than that one.

In February, I interviewed Laszlo Bock, who is in charge of all hiring at Google - about 100 new hires a week - to try to understand what an employer like Google was looking for and why it was increasingly ready to hire people with no college degrees. Bock's remarks generated a lot of reader response, particularly his point that prospective bosses today care less about what you know or where you learned it - the Google machine knows everything now - than what value you can create with what you know. With graduations approaching, I went back to Google to ask Bock to share his best advice for job-seekers anywhere, not just at Google. Here is a condensed version of our conversations:

You're not saying college education is worthless?
"My belief is not that one shouldn't go to college," Bock said.

It is that among 18- to 22-year-olds - or people returning to school years later - "most don't put enough thought into why they're going, and what they want to get out of it." Of course, we want an informed citizenry, where everyone has a baseline of knowledge from which to build skills. That is a social good. But, he added, don't just go to college because you think it is the right thing to do and that any bachelor's degree will suffice.

"The first and most important thing is to be explicit and willful in making the decisions about what you want to get out of this investment in your education." It's a huge investment of time, effort and money and people should think "incredibly hard about what they're getting in return."

Once there, said Bock, make sure that you're getting out of it not only a broadening of your knowledge but skills that will be valued in today's workplace. Your college degree is not a proxy anymore for having the skills or traits to do any job.

What are those traits?
One is grit, he said. Shuffling through resumes of some of Google's 100 hires that week, Bock explained: "I was on campus speaking to a student who was a computer science and math double major, who was thinking of shifting to an economics major because the computer science courses were too difficult. I told that student they are much better off being a B student in computer science than an A+ student in English because it signals a rigor in your thinking and a more challenging course load. That student will be one of our interns this summer."

Or, he added, think of this headline from The Wall Street Journal in 2011: "Students Pick Easier Majors Despite Less Pay." This was an article about a student who switched from electrical and computer engineering to a major in psychology. She said she just found the former too difficult and would focus instead on a career in public relations and human resources. "I think this student was making a mistake," said Bock, even if it meant lower grades. "She was moving out of a major where she would have been differentiated in the labor force" and "out of classes that would have made her better qualified for other jobs because of the training."

This is key for Bock because the first thing Google looks for "is general cognitive ability - the ability to learn things and solve problems," he said. In that vein, "a knowledge set that will be invaluable is the ability to understand and apply information - so, basic computer science skills. I'm not saying you have to be some terrific coder, but to just understand how [these] things work you have to be able to think in a formal and logical and structured way." But that kind of thinking doesn't have to come from a computer science degree. "I took statistics at business school, and it was transformative for my career. Analytical training gives you a skill set that differentiates you from most people in the labor market."

A lot of work, he added, is no longer tied to location.

"So if you want your job tied to where you are, you need to be: A) quite good at it; and B) you need to be very adaptable so that you have a baseline skill set that allows you to be a call center operator today and tomorrow be able to interpret MRI scans. To have built the skill set that allows you to do both things requires a baseline capability that's analytical."

Well, what about creativity?
Bock: "Humans are by nature creative beings, but not by nature logical, structured-thinking beings. Those are skills you have to learn. One of the things that makes people more effective is if you can do both. ... If you're great on both attributes, you'll have a lot more options. If you have just one, that's fine, too." But a lot fewer people have this kind of structured thought process and creativity.

Are the liberal arts still important?
They are "phenomenally important," he said, especially when you combine them with other disciplines. "Ten years ago behavioral economics was rarely referenced. But [then] you apply social science to economics and suddenly there's this whole new field. I think a lot about how the most interesting things are happening at the intersection of two fields. To pursue that, you need expertise in both fields. You have to understand economics and psychology or statistics and physics [and] bring them together. You need some people who are holistic thinkers and have liberal arts backgrounds and some who are deep functional experts. Building that balance is hard, but that's where you end up building great societies, great organizations."

How do you write a good resume?
"The key," he said, "is to frame your strengths as: 'I accomplished X, relative to Y, by doing Z.' Most people would write a resume like this: 'Wrote editorials for The New York Times.' Better would be to say: 'Had 50 op-eds published compared to average of six by most op-ed [writers] as a result of providing deep insight into the following area for three years.' Most people don't put the right content on their resumes."

What's your best advice for job interviews?

Spanish website Xataca has reported that the company will soon launch a low-end smartphone, named Moto E.
NEW DELHI: As Moto G creates waves in the smartphone market with its specifications and price tag, Motorola is eyeing a deja vu. Spanish website Xataca has reported that the company will soon launch a low-end smartphone, named Moto E.

The upcoming Moto E will have a 4.3-inch screen, and though the report says that the resolution cannot be confirmed, it expects a 720p display. Other key specifications of the device include 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 5MP camera and 1,900mAh battery. The smartphone will have 4GB internal storage and support microSD cards, which is missing in both Moto G and Moto X.

Moto E will come with Android 4.4 (KitKat) and offer dual-sim functionality. The smartphone will come in black and white colour options and have back covers in different hues.

Among the USPs of Moto E would be its ultra-thin body. The report says that the smartphone would be just 6.2mm thick, making it slimmer than the likes of iPhone 5S and Galaxy S4.

Mexican telecom operator Telcel will start retailing the smartphone in coming weeks. There is no world on the global rollout of this handset. On the pricing, the report says that Moto E will be placed between the 8GB and 16GB versions of Moto G. This means, it is likely to be priced between Rs 12,499 and Rs 13,999 in the Indian market.

Apart from this, Motorola is also said to be working on two more variants of Moto G, named Moto G LTE and Moto G Ferrari. The former is expected to support 4G networks, going by the name. However, nothing is known about the Moto G Ferrari model yet.

In early April, Motorola launched the rugged version of its smartphone, named Moto G Forte, in Mexico.

NEW DELHI: Ahead of the closure of Nokia-Microsoft deal before the end of April, a leaked letter in Finland shows that Nokia Oyj will be soon renamed as Microsoft Mobile Oy.

According to a report on wmpoweruser.com, a website that tracks developments related to Windows Phone, in a letter Nokia has told its sellers in Finland that the deal with Microsoft will close soon. Both Microsoft and Nokia had said in March that the deal would close by the end of April.

"Please note that upon the close of the transaction between Microsoft and Nokia, the name of Nokia Corporation/Nokia Oyj will change to Microsoft Mobile Oy. Microsoft Mobile Oy is the legal entity name that should be used for VAT IDs and for the issuance of invoices," the company reportedly said in the leaked letter.

Oyj is a Finnish abbreviation for a "public stock company" while the Oy is a term for a "corporation".

The closure of the deal doesn't really mean the end of Nokia. Instead, it means an end to Nokia as the world knows it. Microsoft is buying Nokia's mobile phones division, including the teams that make feature phones. But it is not buying the divisions that are responsible for network equipment business and Here maps. The company left behind by Microsoft will also keep rights to its name Nokia though Microsoft has bought the licence to use the Nokia brand name for 10 years as part of its $7.2 billion deal.

Additionally, Microsoft has bought rights to use Lumia and Asha brand names. As part of the deal, Nokia has also agreed to not make a smartphone or phone using Nokia brand before the end of 2015.

While the name Nokia will be replaced by Microsoft Mobile in the coming days in Finland — and possibly in other countries — not much will change for Nokia's business partners in the immediate future.

"Under the terms of the sale, Microsoft will assume all rights, benefits and obligations of the Nokia Devices and Services business, including Nokia's agreements with suppliers, customers and partners which pertain to the Devices and Services business. Therefore, the purpose of this letter is to update you that the current terms and conditions that you have with the Devices and Services business will not change," Nokia notes in the leaked letter.

Originally, Nokia's deal with Microsoft was supposed to close before the end of March. But the regulatory approval from Chinese authorities was received just several days ago. Nokia's problems with Indian tax authorities over the manufacturing plant in Chennai have also reportedly delayed the deal. But there are reports that Nokia and Microsoft may agree to leave the Chennai plant out the deal in a bid to wrap up the sale before the end of April
.
