Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo review

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo reviewSamsung_Galaxy_Note3_Neo_Cover_NDTV.jpg

Late last year, a video showcasing the prototype of a modular phone - Phonebloks - circulated virally around the Web. The idea of a phone that can be whatever you want it to be definitely met with approval, and we might soon see it turn into reality, thanks to Motorola.
Samsung seems to have the same goal, but its approach has been to create a new model for every possible need. Did we hear someone enquiring about a smartphone with a 5.1-inch screen and top-of-the-line specs? We have the Galaxy S4/S5 for you. No? Do you want a slightly bigger screen with a full-HD display and a stylus? Take a look at the Galaxy Note 3. You think that's too expensive but don't mind a slight compromise on the screen resolution and camera specifications? Enter its younger sibling - the Galaxy Note 3 Neo.
For the uninitiated, this cacophony of device names might be unnerving. Did we mention there is also a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo Duos? Now, while we are at the topic of bewildering monikers, check this out.
The Neo is slimmer and sleeker than its namesake, and Samsung is also blowing its trumpet about the hexacore processor housed inside the device. Is the younger sibling rough around the edges? How is the performance compared to the Note 3 which is slightly more expensive? Is there a single redeeming feature for us to recommend the Note 3 Neo? Read on to find out.

Look and Feel
This 'lite' edition also has the faux leather plastic back with a distinctive stitch design running across the border akin to its elder sibling. The Neo feels comfortable to hold if you have big hands, but it isn't too comfortable for single-handed operation. Reaching the top of the screen with your thumb is bound to be a hassle.
Looking at it from the back, the camera and flash modules sit on top of the Samsung logo running across the breadth of the device. Removing the rear cover reveals the removable 3100mAh battery, a slot for the SIM card, and another one for the microSD memory card. It is interesting to note that the NFC module is a part of the battery.
Samsung_Galaxy_Note3_Neo_Camera_NDTV.jpg
We reviewed the alluring white edition and it is definitely a dust magnet. However, the Neo is also available in classic black and cool mint (which looks rather bland). This phablet has a single physical button for the home function which is flanked on either side by the back (right) and menu (left) buttons. Right above the screen is the earpiece grille. To its right are the proximity and light sensors, and the front camera module. To its left, you can see a discreet (almost invisible) notification LED. A bit too cramped in our opinion.
A chrome trim runs around the border, which houses most of the buttons and ports. The left edge has a volume rocker and the power button sits on the right edge, which is great for accessibility considering the size of the device (we're looking at you, HTC). The bottom is the busiest, with the Micro-USB charging/data port, speaker grille, microphone, and enclosure for the S Pen stylus. The top is also crowded, with the 3.5mm jack, extra microphone for the speakerphone, and an infrared LED.
The oft-used statement 'don't judge a book by its cover' holds true in the case of the Neo, since the faux leather might give it a premium look. Once we pry open the rear cover, it is unmistakably and unapologetically plastic. Despite this, the Galaxy Note 3 Neo is a sturdy device with no signs of flex.

Features and Specifications
The USP of this Samsung phablet is the hexacore processor, which includes a quad-core Cortex A7 clocked at 1.3 GHz and a dual-core 1.7GHz Cortex A15, supported by a Mali T-624 graphics subsystem. The Neo has 16GB of internal memory and supports up to 64GB more using a MicroSD card. Two gigabytes of RAM are available for the user, which is a gigabyte less than on the Note 3. The rear camera is an 8MP variant (again stripped down from the Note 3's 13MP) with flash and there's also a 2MP front-facing camera capable of capturing 1080p video for those long Skype sessions.
Coming to the connectivity, Samsung has all bases covered, with 2G, 3G, LTE (no support for 2.3GHz band, though), GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, NFC, and Bluetooth 4.0. Moreover, Samsung has added a multitude of sensors including an accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensor and compass.
Since the Neo is supposed to be a stripped down version of the Galaxy Note 3, Samsung has made a compromise on the screen, which is a 5.5 inch 720p Super AMOLED capacitive touch panel. It translates to a pixel density of approximately 267 per inch. Despite being a PenTile screen, it isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, the accurate colour reproduction and impressive viewing angles are an advantage. The screen also has Gorilla Glass 3 for protection just like the Note 3, which should allow it to handle a few scratches.

Software
Colourful wallpapers and icons are standard for TouchWiz - Samsung's custom UI on top of all its Android (4.3 Jellybean, in this case) devices. It is garish, loud, cartoonish, and we are no strangers to it anymore. Nothing's changed in the case of the Galaxy Note 3 Neo.
The Neo carries forward all the software embellishments Samsung introduced with the Note 3. The most interesting of the lot is Air Command, which uses the S Pen (capacitive stylus) exclusive to the Note series. Basically, the moment you detach the S Pen, you'll see a semi-circular wheel of commands on screen. Using the S Pen, the user can select any of the following tools: Action Memo, Scrapbooker, Screen Write, S-Finder and Pen Window. Except for Pen Window which is used to launch apps compatible with Samsung's multitasking scheme, the rest of the features seem to have limited value. Still, we noted that the S Pen works better than any stylus in the market.
A few other features like Smart Stay, Smart Scroll and Smart Pause are present too. They work occasionally, but using Smart Scroll, for example, appeared to bystanders as though we were performing advanced neck exercises.
Samsung_Galaxy_Note3_Neo_Screenshot1_NDTV.jpg
Samsung provides a panel of applications that the can run on screen simultaneously, and we found ourselves using this quite often, especially when we wanted to watch a video and do other little things such as sending a text message alongside.
TouchWiz offers a plethora of options in the notification panel and frankly, despite looking messy, it is indeed functional. Also, Samsung's default keyboard includes a number row on top of the QWERTY layout which is handy. Another nifty addition is the handwriting-to-text feature on the keyboard that works like a charm.
Users can find the regular set of Google apps, including Chrome, bunched up in a folder. We can always expect Samsung to fill their devices with bloatware, and they don't disappoint in the case of the Neo. Here is the laundry list: Samsung Apps, Samsung ChatON, Samsung WatchON, Samsung Link, Screen Mirroring, S Voice, S Health, Group Play, Story Album, and S Translator.
Samsung also bundles Evernote, Dropbox, Flipboard and Tripadvisor with the device. The apps are placed in a folder called Galaxy Plus. Samsung teams up with Flipboard for content syndication for the Magazine app and tries to emulate the functionality of HTCs Blinkfeed, which in itself shares design ideologies with Flipboard. The user can swipe from the bottom of the screen to pull up Magazine.
Samsung's idea is to give the user plenty of choice, but these apps are a part of the core system, and there's no easy way to delete them.

Camera
Samsung's Note series of phablets tend to deliver great camera results. In the case of the Note 3 Neo, Samsung has bumped down the rear camera's specification compared to the Note 3, which incidentally has one of the best smartphone cameras on the market today. This model features an 8MP rear shooter compared to the 13MP one on its elder sibling, and a 2MP one in front. Both are also capable of recording 1080p full HD videos.
Samsung_Galaxy_Note3_Neo_CameraApp_NDTV.jpg
Users accustomed to Samsung's camera interface will feel at home. The various available shooting modes largely eliminate any need for third-party apps. We found ourselves reaching for the Best Photo, Best Face and Sound and Shot modes more often than not.
We tested the image quality of captured photographs under different conditions. At first glance, images captured in broad daylight look great but on closer inspection we found that the leaves on a tree had a bit of chromatic aberration. Indoor shots under incandescent lighting reproduced natural colours with minimal noise. Samsung enhances performance in low light using a feature called Smart Stabilization. Noise levels are high despite using the enhancement. Video captured at 1080p skipped frames and had interlacing issues when panned. All we can say is that the camera could have been better.

Performance
We ran a bunch of synthetic tests to determine the Neo's processor performance and fortunately it performed to our expectations. AnTuTu returned a score of 29,075 and in the Quadrant test, the phablet clocked in an overall score of 11,858. The hexacore processor of the device is definitely a workhorse, and it shows in the buttery smooth performance while sifting through homescreens and the app drawer in general.
For graphically intensive processes we used GFXbench and 3DMark's Ice Storm tests. The scores were 24.3 fps and 9446, respectively. This is definitely not top-tier performance, and a few other devices in the same price range such as the LG G2 and Sony Xperia Z1 perform much better.
Samsung_Galaxy_Note3_Neo_Top_NDTV.jpg
SunSpider took 870.8ms to complete and Mozilla Kraken returned a score of 8,106ms. Once again, the other phones performed better. Our disappointment was compounded by the fact that opening multiple heavy web pages at once caused the Neo to stutter.
Video playback is a cause of concern, especially since the default apps refused to play 1080p videos. If the encoded audio is 5.1 channel, the default app throws up the 'audio codec not supported' message. VLC, on the other hand, managed to play all the files we threw at it, but the heavier 1080p files had artifacts cropping up from time to time and dropped frames occasionally. We felt shortchanged with the experience on the 'supposedly' high-end hardware.
The bundled earphones are the same ones that Samsung includes with most of its high-end Galaxy devices, and are mediocre at best. The shrill treble overpowers the muddled bass. The only saving grace was tight mids in songs which emphasise only vocals. Audio purists will have a better experience with third-party earphones, and we noted that the quality of sound improved drastically when we tried our own.
Samsung_Galaxy_Note3_Neo_Bottom_NDTV.jpg
At its highest volume, the loudspeaker is a bit soft but definitely not enough to be a deal-breaker. Once a call was made, the Neo managed to hold on the cellular network signal even where performance is generally supposed to be weak. The 3100mAh under the hood is a revelation since it lasted a good 12 hours, 22 minutes in our continuous video loop test. Discounting the testing process, during normal usage, we reached for the charger only twice in five days.
A look at the aforementioned observations, hexacore processor or not, reveals that the Note 3 Neo is not meant to be a powerhouse device but a workhorse.

Verdict
All points considered; if you are looking for a sturdy phablet with a powerful stylus for note taking, a big, beautiful screen and great battery life, then look no further than the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo as it might just serve the purpose. But be warned, the performance of the Neo is middling for an expensive device.
At the time of this review, online e-commerce websites were retailing it at approximately Rs. 36,500 whereas the Note 3 retails for Rs. 43,500. Give the elder sibling a serious thought before settling on the Neo. If you don't need the stylus and can live with a smaller screen, we would also suggest that you take a look at the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact and the LG G2, which perform better.

Android Wear-running LG G Watch gets a July launch date

Android Wear-running LG G Watch gets a July launch datelg_g_watch_android_wear_smartwatch_official_teaser.jpg

LG jumped onto the wearable bandwagon with the announcement of its first smartwatch, the G Watch, in March.
The LG G Watch runs Google's Android Wear, a software project that extends Android to wearables and the South Korean company had revealed that its first smartwatch will be released in Q2 2014.
Now, LG has confirmed to Pocket-lint that the G Watch will be released in UK priced below GBP 180 (roughly Rs. 18,000) and will be available before July. As of now, the company has not revealed the complete specifications of its first smartwatch. The LG G Watch is expected to feature a 1.65-inch display with a 280x280 pixel resolution, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of built-in storage. Further, there is no word on global rollout of the LG G Watch.
Earlier, LG teased its G Watch wearable device via a single clear image in a Twitter post. The post stated "LG #GWatch - Coming Soon!" followed by an image. The image showed the G Watch featuring a square screen. The screen showed Google Hangout chats along with time on the top-left corner.
Notably, Motorola also announced its Moto 360 smartwatch running Google's Android Wear. The former Google-owned company had announced that the smartwatch would be available in a variety of styles globally in summer 2014, starting in the US. However, the company is yet to reveal the pricing of the Moto 360.
Google however, besides LG and Motorola, is also teaming-up with other firms for its Android Wear project, out of which some key manufacturers are Asus, HTC, LG, Samsung and the Fossil Group.

Former HP executive charged with bribery in Poland

Former HP executive charged with bribery in Polandhp_office_geneva_reuters.jpg

Polish prosecutors alleged on Wednesday that a local executive with U.S. firm Hewlett-Packard Co. paid bribes worth over $500,000 in exchange for help winning contracts to supply computer equipment to the Polish police headquarters.
Poland's Interior Minister Bartlomiej Sienkiewicz said HP would make an announcement later on Wednesday acknowledging its Polish unit had been involved in "corrupt activities". A spokeswoman for HP declined to comment.
Polish officials said dozens of people had been charged as part of an industry-wide investigation of corruption dating from 2007 to 2009, among them representatives of major information technology (IT) companies, government officials and former police officers.
The minister said Poland had cooperated on the investigation with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
The U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act makes it illegal for U.S. companies to pay bribes to officials with foreign governments to win business. Firms found to have violated the act have in the past been ordered to pay multi-million-dollar settlements.
Polish prosecutors said their case centred around a former government official who was initially in charge of IT with the national police headquarters, and later became head of the IT Projects Center, a state agency at the Polish Interior Ministry.
Zbigniew Jaskolski, a spokesman for the Appellate Prosecutors' office in Warsaw, which handles major cases, said the official gave favourable treatment for firms, including HP, which were bidding for IT contracts with the police headquarters that were worth a total of $39.71 million.
In exchange, the executive in HP's Poland unit, who is no longer with the company, gave the official a payment of $529,500 as well as computer, audio and video equipment worth $36,400, Jaskolski said.
The Appellate Prosecutors' office named the former government official as Andrzej M., and the former HP executive as Tomasz Z., without giving their full last names in accordance with the Polish law.
The former HP executive also promised the same official a bribe worth $827,400 in exchange for including in the tender documents provisions which favoured bidders designated by the executive, Jaskolski said.
Both the former executive and the former official have been charged with offences which carry prison sentences of between two and 12 years, he said.
"Breakthrough"
Reuters was not immediately able to reach either of the two, or their legal representatives. Reuters sent a message via social media to someone with the same name as the IT Projects Center's ex-official, but there was no immediate response.
Sienkiewicz, the Polish Interior Minister, said the investigation showed there would be consequences if companies operating in Poland, eastern Europe's biggest economy, did not respect the law.
"It's a breakthrough moment in Poland when a great international company acknowledges its corrupt activities in Poland," Sienkiewicz told Polish public radio.
In Warsaw, a spokesman for the Central Anti-Corruption bureau, Jacek Dobrzynski, said the bureau had launched an investigation of major IT companies in Poland in 2011. He said close to 70 charges had been brought against 41 people.
The prosecution spokesman, Jaskolski, said the investigation was still in progress and that prosecutors had not yet applied to a court to begin prosecutions in the case.
He said the former HP executive and the former government official had been detained early in the investigation, but had since been released on a bond.
The alleged corruption took place between the beginning of 2007 and the end of 2009, Jaskolski said

Microsoft partners Lenovo, Tencent to offer Windows XP support in China

Microsoft partners Lenovo, Tencent to offer Windows XP support in Chinamicrosoft_office_entrance_reuters.jpg

Microsoft Corp has partnered Lenovo Group Ltd and Tencent Holdings Ltd to provide software security services for Windows XP users in China, after the U.S. tech firm stopped updating the operating system.
Microsoft wants users to move to later, more secure versions of Windows and so stopped servicing the 13-year-old XP this week, potentially leaving users vulnerable to viruses and hacking.
XP has 200 million users in China, or 70 percent of the market, according to Zhongguancun Online, cited by state news agency Xinhua. Upgrading could be expensive as computers running XP might not be powerful enough for newer versions of Windows.
To continue support for XP users, Microsoft has partnered Lenovo, Tencent and several other Chinese computing companies to offer services such as information protection, post-virus repairs and upgrades to the newer Windows 7 or 8.
"For domestic users who continue to use Windows XP before upgrading to a new operating system, we have made it a priority to provide safety protections," Microsoft said in an email to Reuters.
Tencent, in a statement to Reuters, said it will provide permanent XP support free of charge, and that it has set up two 24-hour hotlines. Lenovo declined to comment.
Among other partners, Qihoo 360 Technology Co will offer security support and, for 299 yuan, help users transition to newer versions.
"Qihoo 360 will continue to provide Windows XP support to Chinese users as long as there are still XP users in China," Alex Xu, Qihoo 360 co-chief financial officer, told Reuters.
Encouraging users to upgrade could also reduce the number of computers running pirated Windows XP software. Former CEO Steve Ballmer reportedly told employees in 2011 that, because of piracy, Microsoft earned less revenue in China than in the Netherlands even though Chinese computer sales matched those of the U.S.
But the cost of upgrading has irked some users. Added to any transition fee is the cost of the software - at least 888 yuan for Windows 8 - plus the cost of any hardware upgrade.
"Many of my clients only use their computers for email," said a computer shop owner who identified himself by the surname Niu. "There is no use for them to buy a new computer."

BlackBerry Kopi budget QWERTY phone reportedly spotted with BlackBerry Q5

BlackBerry Kopi budget QWERTY phone reportedly spotted with BlackBerry Q5blackberry_kopi_and_q5_leaked_berryflow.jpg

The alleged BlackBerry Kopi smartphone was said to have been spotted on several occasions since last year, and now the 'Classic' smartphone with QWERTY keypad has appeared again in a new set of images that compares it to the BlackBerry Q5.
We first heard about the Kopi in September last year, when it was shown in an alleged leaked image. Soon after, there were reports that BlackBerry has cancelled the plans of its release and we instead got the BlackBerry Q5.
According to Berryflow, the site that has posted the most recent alleged images of the BlackBerry Kopi, suggest that there are very subtle changes from the BlackBerry Q5 which make the BlackBerry Kopi an entry-level device.
The site claims to have received the new alleged BlackBerry Kopi images from a seller in Vietnam. It has more removable parts and is a mix of design elements from the BlackBerry Z10 and Q5. The website doesn't mention anything about the specifications, release date, or pricing.
While we still need to discover more about the BlackBerry Kopi, there is one other entry-level device from BlackBerry that is scheduled to debut in Indonesia in April - the BlackBerry Z3.
On Monday we saw an image posted by an Indonesian publication which showed the BlackBerry Z3 pictured alongside the Z10 and Z30. The leaked image suggested that the Z3 will feature slim bezels and might come with a 5-inch display, much like company's first phablet, the BlackBerry Z30.
Further, considering that the BlackBerry Z3 will be priced below $200, the display resolution is expected to be qHD (540x960 pixels). As of now, there is no word on other specifications of the BlackBerry Z3.
Notably, the Z3 smartphone has been built under a partnership deal with FIH Mobile Ltd - the Hong Kong-listed unit of Taiwanese electronics giant, Foxconn.

HTC One (M8) has the fastest touch response yet at 46ms: Report

HTC One (M8) has the fastest touch response yet at 46ms: Reporthtc_one_m8_reuters.jpg

While there are quite a lot of selling points with which HTC can market its new flagship One (M8), there is now one more achievement which the company can add - the lowest display latency.
According to tests performed by Lesnumeriques.fr, the HTC One (M8)'s average touch response time has been measured as 46 milliseconds. This, according to the Lesnumeriques, makes the One (M8) the fastest tested mass-market smartphone so far. Usually display latency (average touch response time) is measured in milliseconds, and usually ranges between 80ms and 250ms in most modern smartphones. Notably, the display latency is usually larger in tablets.
According to Android Authority, the HTC One (M8) is nearly 40 percent faster than the iPhone 5s, which reportedly has an average touch response time of 75 milliseconds. Before the HTC One (M8) hit the test beds, the fastest touch response time on a smartphone was 63ms on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
The report adds that when the similar test was conducted on a range to tablets, the Kindle Fire HD (2013) and the Nexus 7 (2013) scored 114ms to 135ms respectively. The Microsoft Surface RT scored slightly better, at 92ms.
Notably, the all-new HTC One (M8) comes with a 5-inch full-HD display and will be available in 16GB and 32GB storage options, with support for expandable storage via microSD card of up to 128GB capacity.

Facebook hits 100 million India users, largest after US

Facebook hits 100 million India users, largest after USfacebook_computer_screen_brussels_reuters.jpg

Facebook has hit more than 100 million users in India, making it only the second country after the United States to achieve the milestone, the social network company has said.
The mobile phone market was driving growth in India along with better Internet coverage across the country of 1.2 billion people, said Kevin D'Souza, Facebook India's head of growth and mobile partnerships.
"Today, we have more than 100 million people who access Facebook actively in India each month," D'Souza was quoted in local media on Wednesday as saying.
"Now, we look forward to one billion in India that's a different focus and challenge," Javier Olivan, who looks after global growth in Facebook, told the Economic Times newspaper.
India is expected later this year to overtake the United States as the country with the most Facebook users, with the figure forecast to pass 150 million, analysts have said.
Facebook, with more than 1.23 billion users globally, is turning to emerging markets including those in Asia to drive expansion after growth in the West tapers off.
It leads social network services in all but six countries notably Russia, where local rivals are preferred, and China, where it has been largely banned since 2009.
Facebook announced in February a takeover of free mobile messaging service WhatsApp for $19 billion in a deal that marries its social network users with Whatsapp's 450 million users.
Facebook has seen a meteoric rise in India since setting up its first office in the southern city of Hyderabad four years ago, when the country had about eight million users.
India has 164.81 million Internet subscribers, with more than half logging in from their mobile phones, the telecoms regulator said last year.

Elections 2014: NDTV and Uber Delhi offer free ride to polling booth

Elections 2014: NDTV and Uber Delhi offer free ride to polling boothuber_app_delhi_elections.jpg

NDTV and Uber, the venture-funded premium taxi service start-up, have tied up to offer voters two free rides to the polling booth and back in Delhi on 10 April, the day of the Lok Sabha elections. The endeavour is being taken up by NDTV and Uber to encourage more and more people to go out and vote in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections that began on 7 April.
Senior citizens wishing to make use of the initiative need to download the Uber app on their iPhone orAndroid smartphone, and enter the promo code NDTVVOTE. (Details)
Using this promo code, senior citizens in Delhi are entitled to two free rides worth Rs. 1,000 each to the polling booth and back between 7am and 7pm on Thursday. Anticipating heavy demand, Uber notes that users might have to try a few times before they can connect to a driver in the vicinity owing to the excess demand.
Other users can make user of this offer by entering the promo code VOTEDELHI. (Details)
Uber has also kept its referral programme active for the period. Users can refer their friends with their unique referral code. While the friends could have made use of the two free rides offers by themselves, with this method both the referrer and referee will get referral credits.
In addition it is also running a contest where users can tweet (#UberVoteDelhi) or Instagram their pictures and videos after voting. Users also have to write back saying why their vote was important. The most interesting answers stand a chance to win Uber credits.

Tap Your Listening Skills

Tap Your Listening Skills

Tap Your Listening Skills
An old Argnetine proverb puts it quite simply, ‘He who speaks, sows; he who listens, reaps.’ In a world rich with social platforms to express oneself, good listeners are a rare species. But at the workplace, using your listening skills can get you far.
ET speaks to experts, to find out five ways to best leverage your listening skills.
Resolving conflicts
Good listeners tend to be better equipped to resolve conflicts.
‘Leaders are more approachable if they offer to lend their ears to team members during a crisis at work which results in a better constructive method to solve the issue,’ says Minhaj Zia, managing director, Polycom India & SAARC.
Defying distance and barriers
In today’s world, we are constantly collaborating with people from various countries, who belong to wildly diverse cultures, and we rarely even get to personally interact with them.
Using your listening skills to the maximum becomes a necessity, and not just a good trait to have, in order to achieve such collaboration smoothly.
Listen to connect the dots
The ability to draw commonalities between multiple conversations improves dramatically if a person is a good listener.
As a leader, this can help in improving fact-based judgement.
‘Asking for clarification will allow you to probe for additional facts. Using this effectively shows your ability to connect,’ says Mark Driscoll, Human Capital leader, PwC India.
Driving innovation
When you allow someone to talk for 20 minutes, and just listen, they tend to come up with their own solutions.
‘One can come up with interesting new ways of working and infuse new life into projects by spelling out the objective and then letting the team come up with suitable action plans rather than prescribing a traditional approach,’ says Zia.
Establishing a rapport
A distraction-free conversation portrays to your speaker that you care about his view points, and are not just obsessed mentally with what you will say next.
Even in a meeting with multiple people, you can build a better rapport with colleagues, by actively listening to speakers, and responding non-verbally.
