Huawei CMO on why the company doesn't like Windows Phone

Huawei CMO on why the company doesn't like Windows Phonehuawei-ascend-w1.jpg

Huawei, in a recent interview, has reasoned out why it wants to prioritise Google's Android OS over Microsoft's Windows Phone for its handsets, listing the perceived problems with the latter platform.
Shao Yang, CMO of Huawei Consumer BG, on being asked about the plans to create a Windows Phone running device, stated "In Windows Phone there is one problem that it has more licensing cost than Android," to WP Xbox website.
According to Yang, the high-licensing cost will lead to an increase in the price of the Windows Phone handsets by 10 percent. Moreover, he thinks the Windows Phone ecosystem is closed, leaving no room for innovation for the developers.
"The second block is the ecosystem. The third and major block point is that Windows Phone is not so open as Android which blocks a vendor to make their own innovation."
Furthermore, it has been understood that it would be more difficult for Huawei to "open the API" if both Microsoft and Nokia combine which might make the competition unfair.
He further explains that "The problem is the API and customization are not available equally for all. Initially all phone makers started with Windows Phone but only Nokia had exclusive access to some of the API. Now with Nokia gone into Microsoft, the problem still remains the same."
The reasons mentioned above by Yang partially justify why the Chinese firm last week ditched its plan of creating a dual-boot OS smartphone (Android and Windows Phone).
In a statement last week, Huawei said "Huawei Consumer Business Group adopts an open approach towards mobile operating systems to provide a range of choices for consumers. However, most of our products are based on Android OS, [and] at this stage there are no plans to launch a dual-OS smartphone in the near future."
Asus, much like Huawei, recently scrapped its plans to create a dual-OS high profile device that expected to launch this year, and a Wall Street Journal report had claimed the reason behind the cancellation was pressure from Google and Microsoft to abandon the project.

Windows users can click the bell icon in the lower right corner of your computer screen to open the Notifications Center. Mac users will see it in the upper right corner. Once inside the Notifications Center, click the gear icon and uncheck the box next to "Google Now".
More details can be found from the 'Google Now Cards in Chrome' support page.
Recently Google Search app for Android devices got a couple of voice command feature updates. The app updates enable users to capture image or video and to play music by saying 'Ok Google' followed by the command.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom specifications leak again

Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom specifications leak againsamsung_galaxy_s5_zoom_specs_leak_polish_website.jpg

Details of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom have been leaked online for the second with some new information on specifications and its design. However this new leak has some specifications that are slightly different from what was first shared on the internet.
The latest news comes from a Polish website, Galaktyczny.pl, which mentioned that the smartphone was shown in a conference between some of the Samsung officials and was strictly confidential. According to the website, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom is slimmer than the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom and that the smartphone's "lens is much better hidden in the casing." The camera is of course the main feature of the new handset, and is said to have a 20-megapixel sensor, 10x optical zoom, image stabilisation and also a Xenon flash. Aside from these imaging features, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom is also expected to include a physical camera shutter button and a throttle to control the zoom, both of which make it easier to take pictures.
The screen of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom is rumoured to be a 4.8-inch display covering almost the entire front of the device. The handset uses the Android KitKat OS, and it is said to be efficient and faster as it might be powered by a quad-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz paired with 2GB of RAM.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom smartphone was first spotted in a GFXBench test earlier this month. Interestingly, there are some differences in the specifications in the two leaks.
While the Android version, screen size and RAM remain the same, the benchmarks revealed the smartphone to feature a 720p HD screen, 1.3GHz hexa-core (Samsung Exynos 5 Hexa) CPU and a Mali-T624 GPU. Additionally, the earlier leak suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S5 Zoom has a 19-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera that can record Full-HD videos. On the storage front, the Samsung SM-C115 (rumoured S5 Zoom) device is listed with two reported storage capacities, which likely means that a dedicated memory card slot will be present, too.

Nokia X 'sold out' within four minutes at Chinese retailer

Nokia X 'sold out' within four minutes at Chinese retailernokia_x_mwc_launch_elop.jpg

Nokia's first Android smartphone, the Nokia X became sold out immediately in China, according to some reports citing an online retailer.
Windows Phone Central in a report has cited a Chinese e-commerce website named JD.com and claimed that the Nokia X was sold out four minutes after online reservations opened. Pre-orders for the Nokia X launched at 10:00AM on Monday (24 March 2014) in China.
The report does not make it clear how many units were available for pre-order on the JD.com site.
The official Chinese JD.com notes (English translated), "The first volume sold out! Next buying time at 12:00 on March 31, due to the limited volume, only open to users who have qualified for the original appointment, the dealer orders shall be deleted!"
Contrary to earlier reports emerging out of China, these orders indeed correspond to actual sales and are not pre-bookings done without fronting any money.
Nokia introduced its Nokia X family, an Android-based smartphone line-up running a highly customised version of the OS, at MWC 2014 amidst much fanfare.
The move surprised a lot of people in the tech industry, given the impending acquisition of Nokia's mobile phone business by Microsoft. There have been suggestions that Nokia's new X family is an attempt to stay relevant in developing markets, where affordable Android smartphones are being bought by hundreds of millions of consumers.
The company has already revealed plans to roll-out more Nokia X smartphones soon and, is said to be aiming for lower price points.
Earlier this month the Nokia X was announced for the Indian market. The Android smartphone from Nokia has been priced at Rs. 8,599. The Nokia X+, and Nokia XL have been announced for India as well, and will be launched within the next two months.
The Nokia X is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), and is powered by Microsoft and Nokia services. The highlight of the Nokia X is the highly customised version of Android, with Metro-inspired UI and access to Nokia's own app store. While there's no access to Google's Play Store, users can side-load Android apps from any third-party source. Nokia has used the AOSP version corresponding to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the baseline for its operating system.

One-third of all Web traffic is 'fake'

One-third of all Web traffic is 'fake'google-new-1-big.jpg

Online advertising is considered to be a step above the old media solutions because everything can be measured and understood. Instead of looking at circulation figures and wondering if any of those readers even opened the page with your ad, a website gives you detailed metrics abouo the people who visit each page, how much time they spend on it, and if they click the ad, you know about it.
That's the promise of onlinie advertising at least, but according to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal, 36% - more than one-third - of all Web traffic is considered fake. The advertisers end up paying more than they should have to, because of these fake views.
In fact, thanks to the automation of advertising and payment systems such as Google AdWords, for example, there has been a wave of so-called content farms, which scrape content from around the Web and put together low quality websites with little investment in quality, because if their keywords can attract enough clicks, then they will get paid anyway.
Google is one of the bigger companies in the fight against content farms and fake clicks. In February, we reported that Google is acquiring British based startup spider.io to use its technology to weed out exactly this kind of fraud.
"Advertising helps fund the digital world we love today... but this vibrant ecosystem only flourishes if marketers can buy media online with the confidence that their ads are reaching real people, that results they see are based on actual interest," said Neal Mohan at Google's DoubleClick unit which develops targeted ads.
With the new acquisition, Mohan said, "our immediate priority is to include their fraud detection technology in our video and display ads products, where they will complement our existing efforts."
However, while the Wall Street Journal quotes companies as saying that Digital is too important tto avoid today, others paint a different picture. In January Yahoo reported a drop in revenue, as the prices of online ads began to slide.
In the fourth-quarter 2013, Yahoo saw revenue from display ads slide by 6 percent year-over-year; the company also saw the price per ad (excluding Korea) decline by 7 percent.
As per the WSJ report, companies like L'Oreal, Coca-Cola and Lenovo are hiring experts to audit their online advertisements and check for fraud, while at the same time, companies like Google are also working to build up the pool of advertisers. In India, Google has been working to train small and medium enterprises to use digital advertising to grow their business.

It's worth pointing out that Rightware's official site has listed the All New HTC One as HTC M8.
In addition, the purported benchmark listings suggest that the new HTC flagship will pack a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 and sports a full-HD display.
Earlier leaks and rumours of the next-generation HTC One suggest that it would come with Android 4.4.2 KitKat; a 5-inch TFT display; 2GB of RAM; 4G LTE wireless network support; upper and the lower rear camera modules boasting 4-megapixel and 16-meapixel sensors respectively; 'UltraPixel' technology in the front-facing shooter; maximum expandable storage capacity of 64GB, and four colour variants - Black, Silver, Red and Gold.
HTC has already revealed that event would be live streamed and recently put up a teaser countdown clock on its official site for the event, scheduled on 25 March 2014.

Xiaomi's Hugo Barra reveals plan to enter India with aggressive pricing

Xiaomi's Hugo Barra reveals plan to enter India with aggressive pricinghugo_barra_google_xiaomi.jpg

Xiaomi, a company which also known as "China's Apple", has revealed its plans to expand to more countries while reaffirming its commitment to Google's Android operating system.
Xiaomi's Global Vice President and former Google Vice President, Hugo Barra in an interview with CNET has revealed that his company intends to enter into the Indian smartphone market. Barra revealed that his company is looking forward to association with telecom operators and other partners in India. Xiaomi plans to sell the smartphone at competitive prices via its own e-commerce site, he said.
Barra also cleared that Xiaomi has no plans to build smartphones based on Firefox or Ubuntu OS. CNET quoted Barra as saying: "We have no plans to do anything other than Android. There's no point. Android has a phenomenal ecosystem. I'm saying this from a practical perspective. If you look at other players who have attempted to build ecosystems and failed despite having great platforms, it's because it takes a lot of work and a lot of time to build an ecosystem."
Chinese budget smartphone maker sold about 7.2 million smartphones in 2012, while the number increased to 18.7 million smartphones in 2013. An earlier report suggested Xiaomi has plans to sell 40 million handsets in 2014, more than double the number it sold in 2013.
"In a year or two, we're going to shift even harder towards building inherently global products. Whenever we think about a new feature, we try to think about it from a Chinese perspective and a global perspective," Barra further added.
The report claims that Xiaomi is looking to expand its smartphone offerings such as Redmi and Mi-3 to more markets. For those unaware, Xiaomi Mi3 with Nvidia Tegra 4 processor was launched in September 2013.
In addition, Rajan Anandan, Vice President and Managing Director at Google India confirmed about Xiaomi's India launch plans. Anandan said on Twitter, "Great meeting #BinLin, @hbarra from @xiaomi Amazed to learn how a business can be re-invented - India smartphone landscape will change!"

Working Empowers You, Makes You Confident: Dipali Goenka, Wife of Welspun Group’s Chairman

Working Empowers You, Makes You Confident: Dipali Goenka, Wife of Welspun Group’s Chairman

Working Empowers You, Makes You Confident: Dipali Goenka, Wife of Welspun Group’s Chairman
Dipali Goenka is one of those who walked the rare path of getting married and raising children before making a career debut. She was 32 years old and a mother of two daughters, then aged 10 and 7, when she decided to step out from her cushioned living room and into the competitive board room.
It wasn’t easy for Goenka, even though she was the wife of the $4-billion Welspun Group’s chairman. Her husband had told her, “This can’t be a hobby as business will be at stake. You will have to show what you can do and prove your worth.”
A determined Goenka started from scratch, handling various roles in different departments from purchase to HR to design and worked her way up. Today, the 44-year-old heads the group’s home textile business.
“Women should work. They should go beyond clothes, bags and jewellery,” says Goenka, adding, “Working empowers you, it makes you confident and in charge of yourself.”
She says that work helps women understand their partners’ professional commitments and hence build an “evolved” relationship, keeping them on a par.
Nothing in life, however, comes free. Even as she juggled with the new routine, trying to take time out for her girls, Goenka missed out on her social life and in the bargain lost a few friends. “The price I paid was nothing compared to what I have learnt and continue to learn. But there were times I was tugged in all directions.” She narrates an incident when she was away at Harvard for a course and her daughter got typhoid. The disturbed mother wanted to come back but her husband comforted her and told her that she should stay put as she had gone all the way.
When Goenka joined the group in 2002, women comprised just a minuscule 2% of the workforce, which today has risen to 40%. Ironically, though the home textile industry is largely male-dominated, the products are mostly bought by women. “While men are all about IQ, women bring with them EQ,” says Goenka, who has worked towards creating an environment conducive for women employees in the corporate office as well as in the plants. “Women also bring diversity, balance and a different thought process.”
What took her so long to start her career innings? Goenka, who grew up in Jaipur, says it was important for her to be with her kids during their early years.
“Despite the father – as also servants – being there for the children, it is only the mother who can inculcate culture in them,” says Goenka, who draws her inspiration from her mother, who was the chairperson of an urban co-operative bank and who broke the glass ceiling in a conservative Marwari community where women are usually known to keep to the backstage.
The managing director of Welspun Global Brands advises women to be disciplined and committed if they want to be taken seriously. Since the time she hit work, there hasn’t been a single day that was boring, says the glamorous Goenka, who starts her day early and wraps up late.
“If you don’t wake up with a spring in your feet, the work is not worth it,” says the fitness freak and trained kathak dancer.
As she sums up, “Respect yourself woman. Period.”

Are Senior Employees Getting Regular Training?

Are Senior Employees Getting Regular Training?

Are Senior Employees Getting Regular Training?
Companies need to identify the requirements of all senior employees and offer customised training

We often hear about companies offering training to the entry-level employees – but how often do we hear about companies training their senior employees? While it’s important to have a systematic induction process for all the entry-level employees and make them aware of all the handy resources, through workshops or training programmes; companies also need to focus on retaining the “old hands” or the senior employees by means of various engagement tools – training programme being one.
Training has to be customised, looking at the employee’s level within the organisation and his/her interests. While entry-level employees must be given training around relationship building and time management; mid-level employees need training in managing small teams, mentoring teammates and delegating routine work. Senior employees, on the other hand, require training to lead middle managers and how to make business decisions.
Experts believe that irrespective of the position served, companies need to monitor individuals’ functions at all levels and offer adequate training based on their performance. By offering training and learning opportunities to the younger employees and neglecting the senior ones will not do any good to the organisation’s growth.
“We believe that with extensive changes in the global business environment, training programmes are essential at each and every level in the organisation. Training gives employees an intellectual edge to deal with both business and people issues, rationally and constructively,” suggests Divya Sutar, vice president – HR, Capri Global Capital Ltd.
She also believes that for senior employees, it’s even more important to provide timely training – as leaders will continue to look for ways to stay ahead of the crowd and implement meaningful changes as and when required in the organisation.
It’s important that the organisation constantly appreciates the contribution of the senior employees by conveying positive messages regularly and also by showing them a proper career map – something they do for the junior employees. Organisations need to review the career development plan of the senior employees as frequently as they do for the others. They also need to establish a bridge of trust – where the senior employees can approach the HR manager and discuss their growth concerns or past achievements. If the senior employees have not been a part of any recent training programme, the HR manager need to make sure that they do participate in the upcoming ones.
A lot of these senior employees are often not seen taking part in the training programmes organised by the companies – mostly because they shy away from such participations. If the organisation understands the employees’ needs – they must also be organising relevant training programmes for them. But is it really the case? Sutar says, “Training cannot be similar at entry, mid or senior level – as the needs are completely different. In order to understand their apprehension from attending a mid-level training programme, we need to first understand the different between “leading” and “managing”. Across their careers, they have been excellent managers; their need is more on enhancing their leadership attributes and this cannot be delivered through mid-level trainings.”
Till the time the organisation actually starts relating to the actual requirements of the senior employees, no training will be useful. “Unless and until there is clarity on expectation and priority is well-defined, a formal training session will not survive the competition for their time and attention,” suggests Sutar.

‘My Manager Taught That Only Results Matter’

‘My Manager Taught That Only Results Matter’

‘My Manager Taught That Only Results Matter’
Suresh Soni, chairman and CEO, Nova Medical Centers shares his first job experience

What was your first job?
My first job was as a corporate marketing manager at Abbott Technologies in Los Angeles, California in 1989.
How was your experience with Abbott Technologies?
Abbott Technologies is a private company that designs and manufactures power equipment, primarily for the defence and high-end industrial sector. I worked directly for the owner/managing director, Peter Batte.
During the first month, I had gone to visit a potential new customer, Teledyne Controls. I ended up making a $ 1.25 Million sale to Teledyne. My boss was extremely pleased and gave me the additional responsibility of managing the sales function as well. As a result, my annual compensation increased five-fold.  I dedicated my entire waking hours to my job and spent an average of 16 hours a day working.
I installed a computer network as well as a custom sales management system. I worked with most of the US defence contractors including Boeing, Raytheon, General Dynamics, and Lockheed. This industry is extremely quality conscious and they pay serious amounts of money to ensure compliance to rigorous military specifications.
I got exposure to most business areas: engineering design, manufacturing, and finance and selling. Over the next six years, we grew the business six-fold. It was a remarkable journey and I became the general manager of the business. I was offered a partnership in the firm which I accepted.
What are things you learnt in your first job?
  • Cash flow is the most important metric in running a business
  • Customer is king and should be treated as one if you want to grow a business
  • If you have revenue, most problems can be addressed!
What are the skills you acquired?
I acquired selling, financial management and computer skills during my first job.
What was your manager’s teaching?
My Manager taught that only results matter.
What was the turning point in your career?
The turning point in my career was my transition from operational role to becoming an entrepreneur in 2003.
What is the most crucial step/assignment you have handled so far?
The most important decision I made was to quit my day job (operational) with an intention of joining the Venture Capital industry. However, I could not find a position as I did not have previous experience in the industry. So I went to Harvard Business School to undertake the Advanced Management Program. This helped me very significantly in my career development and networking.
What is your advice to the new kids in the block?
Knowledge is power, so young people should read a lot.  Follow your dreams. It is very important that you should be passionate about whatever you do. And, success is bound to follow.

Tips For Women Professionals To Succeed In FMCG

Tips For Women Professionals To Succeed In FMCG

Tips For Women Professionals To Succeed In FMCG
Women professionals in FMCG must be good with numbers and know who they are dealing with

According to a report by IBF, the Consumer Durables/FMCG market is going to be US $ 33.4 billion in 2015. The market is expected to double at a CAGR of 14.8 per cent to reach US $12.5 billion in FY15 from US $6.3 billion in FY10.
“Driven by growing consumption in rural and semi-urban areas, the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) market is set to double from US $ 14.7 billion in 2008-09 to US $ 30 billion in 2014, in order to become the fourth largest sector in the economy with a market size in excess of US $14.7 billion,’’ said Srikanth Rengarajan, executive director and president, ManpowerGroup India in the bi-annual RecruiteX report.
With most companies planning massive expansion in future, there is a huge demand for professionals across roles and experience categories. However, the emphasis is more on support functions. Rahul Nene, managing partner, Unoresource mentioned in TimesJobs.com RecruiteX that rapid expansion in terms of front-end core players and improved market penetration, can be achieved if one’s back-end departments such as HR, IT and technical staffing are firmly in place.
All these support functions offer immense opportunities for women professionals in the FMCG sector. Anuradha Aggarwal, Category Director, Biscuits, Cadbury India Ltd, a part of MondelÄ“z International shares few tips for women professionals to chart a successful career in the industry…
• Get into the trenches early, and return often. The real world is in the market. You have to be there, learning the ropes from the sales people in the early stages, figuring out where your product really sells, who sells it and to whom. There is no substitute for hands-on experience, and if it means learning better bladder control, do it!
• Get to know your customer. Just because most FMCG brands in India target women and you are one, does not mean you know what they want. Spend time with the consumer; get to know her/him.
• Make numbers your best friends. So many young girls I meet say that they want to be in the FMCG sector as they love people. The same girls also often confess to not liking numbers. A large part of managing an FMCG brand is analysing market trends, figuring out consumer behaviour traits and reviewing reams of data. It’s important to be good at it.
• Follow through with rigour. A bright mind and a sharp wit will get you in, but survival in the FMCG world is reserved for those who do the – i’s and cross the – t’s. The brightest ideas fail if not backed up by a thorough execution plan. The devil is in the detail.
Be the person that you would want to work with. People come to work inspired by purpose, but work for people who inspire them. Be a great team player and you may be a great leader someday.

Second all-women bank branch opens in Tripura

Second all-women bank branch opens

 in Tripura

AGARTALA: The women in Agartala have reasons to cheer as the Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB) opened its second branch in the state capital on Monday. With this branch, the bank kickstarted its operations in the northeast.

In an attempt to spread base in the northeast, BMB has set the target of opening at least five more branches including one each in Shillong and Gangtok by March 31 to cover 23 per cent of the country's female folk who were earlier left out of the banking system.

BMB chairman and managing director Usha Ananthasubramanian said BMB is trying to cover all women from the lower middle class groups to the richer sections. The bank is offering a lot of schemes specially designed for women. BMB started its journey four months ago from Andhra Pradesh."We have designed our products exclusively for women to make them self-reliant and economically strong. Our aim is to support the marginalized sections of the women and help them in income-generating activities," Usha said.

She pointed out that only 26 per cent of the country's total 49 per cent women population has been brought under banking system in the past 45 years after the nationalization of commercial banks.

Usha said by the end of March 31, BMB will open up at least 25 branches across the country including five in the northeast - Guwahati, Agartala, Shillong and Gangtok -and in next fiscal it will open another 55 branches.

"Though all our policies are women-centric, our bank is also offering general services like all other commercial banks to our male customers. We are providing additional facilities to the women entrepreneurs as part of our policy. We also offer investment and business counseling for promising projects taken up by women," she added.

Samsung Galaxy S5 zoom specs, launch date leaked
Samsung Galaxy S5 zoom will have a slimmer body compared to Galaxy S4 zoom and use a 20MP CMOS sensor with Xenon flash.
NEW DELHI: Samsung is set to launch the Galaxy S5 globally on April 11, but the company may have another announcement up its sleeve. According to a report by Polish website Galaktyczny.pl, the South Korean manufacturer is readying a Galaxy S5 variant focussed on camera optics.

Last year, Samsung launched Galaxy S4 zoom, which had toned down hardware specifications, better camera features and bulkier body.

Samsung Galaxy S5 zoom will have a slimmer body compared to Galaxy S4 zoom and use a 20MP CMOS sensor, instead of the 16MP sensor used in last year's variant. The Galaxy S5 itself has a 16MP rear camera now.

Even though Samsung has done away with the hump, the camera will still have 10X optical zoom. It will also feature optical image stabilization, which is missing from Galaxy S5; the device will also have Xenon flash. The upcoming Samsung device is also said to have a zoom ring positioned such that it comes under the user's thumb; it was placed around the lens in Galaxy S4 zoom.

Other key hardware specifications of Galaxy S5 zoom include 4.8-inch 720p display, quad-core 1.6GHz processor and 2GB RAM. It will run on Android 4.4 (KitKat), with TouchWiz UI on top.

Even though there is no word on the design of the device yet, it is speculated that Samsung may use the faux leather back panel on this device as well.

Samsung is expected to officially unveil the device next week.
