The spending power from 2009 has grown exponentially."

At the same time, Moynihan elaborated, operators in US and European markets are struggling with subsidies, and these two forces will lead to a bell curve where the highest volume - about 80 percent of the market - is in the middle. "Over time, the volume will shift to the higher-middle, or super-mid," he added.

IBM's Watson to help in brain cancer research

IBM's Watson to help in brain cancer researchWatson-supercomputer-635.jpg

IBM is teaming up with the New York Genome Center to help fight brain cancer.
The company said Wednesday that its Watson cloud computing system will be used in partnership with a New York-based genetic research center to help develop treatments for glioblastoma, the most common type of brain cancer in U.S. adults.
"Time definitely is not on your side when you have glioblastoma and that's where Watson comes in," Dr. Robert Darnell, New York Genome's president, CEO and scientific director, said at a Wednesday event announcing the deal.
Glioblastoma is an extremely aggressive form of cancer. The median survival rate is 12 to 14 months and the disease kills about 13,000 people each year.
As part of the clinical trial, New York Genome Center, a nonprofit consortium of academic, medical and industry officials, will sequence the DNA of glioblastoma patients, then use Watson to combine that data with clinical information to help determine the best way to treat each patient.
What makes Watson unique is that it isn't programed like most computers. Instead of relying on the information that's put into it, Watson learns by "reading" vast amounts of information and combining it with the results of previous work to find answers to problems. Those characteristics make Watson ideal for extremely data-heavy work in fields such as health care and finance.
The partnership also comes at a time when IBM is increasing its focus on Watson and other cloud-based software services, as it moves further away from its computer hardware roots. Earlier this year, IBM announced it would invest $1 billion to give Watson its own business division and headquarters in New York City.
John Kelly, a senior vice president and director of IBM Research, says there's a vast amount of data involved in DNA sequencing, which then must be combined with all of the clinical data involved in a particular patient's case. The resulting pool of information is so big that it's impossible for people to deal with.
"This is sort of big data on steroids," Kelly says.
Darnell says the hope is that Watson will speed up the time it takes for physicians to determine a patient's treatment plan.
For instance, if Watson determines that a child's leukemia has genetic traits similar to melanoma, a melanoma drug might be successful in shrinking that child's tumor, he says.
In addition, while a team of top physicians and researchers could do the same work, though at a slower pace, there aren't enough resources to help everyone. But Watson has the potential to be scalable and help many more people, Darnell says.
"This is the proverbial needle in the haystack and the haystack is enormous," Kelly says. "Watson can do in seconds what would take people years. And we can get it down to a really personal level."
The doctors working on the project hope to start with 20 brain cancer patients, sequence their DNA and then run the information through Watson to figure out the best ways to treat them, Darnell says.
Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM Corp. already has a partnership with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where Watson is also used to help treat cancer.

Samsung Gear 2 and Gear Fit prices revealed in Taiwan

Samsung Gear 2 and Gear Fit prices revealed in Taiwansamsung_gear_2_gear_fit.jpg

Samsung at MWC 2014 had launched three wearable devices (two smartwatches, and one fitness band) - the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit - running the Tizen OS instead of Android like the original Galaxy Gear smartwatch. At the announcement however, the South Korean manufacturer did not reveal the prices of the three wearables.
The South Korean consumer electronics giant has now announced the pricing details of the Gear 2 smartwatch and Gear Fit wristbrand at an event, has revealing the Taiwanese pricing of the two devices. As per ePrice, the Samsung Gear 2 has been given a price tag of TWD 8,999 (Rs. 18,000 approximately), while the Gear Fit has been priced at TWD 5,990 (Rs. 12,000 approximately).
Notably Samsung's first smartwatch powered by Android, the Galaxy Gear, was also priced around the Gear 2 and the Galaxy Gear's sales figures were reportedly not eye-catching. However, refuting reports that the Galaxy Gear's sales had been disappointing, Samsung had in November last year said it had sold more than 800,000 units of the smartwatch since its debut in September 2013.
It's yet to be seen whether the Tizen-based Gear 2 and Gear Fit could change fortunes for Samsung's wearable segment.
It's worth mentioning that Google released the Android Wear SDK on Wednesday, specifically for the Android-based wearable devices. LG announced the G Watch smartwatch for a Q2 2014 release, while Motorola released the Moto 360 for summer 2014 release.
For those unaware, the Samsung Gear 2 features a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED display, a 2-megapixel autofocus camera and sports a metal body. The Gear 2 comes is dust and water resistant (IP67 certified). Other features include accelerometer, gyroscope, heart rate sensor, IrLED and Bluetooth 4.0 LE.
The Samsung Gear Fit is smaller and lighter than the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches, and is focused on health. It features a 1.84-inch Super AMOLED display with a 432 x 128 pixel resolution. The Gear Fit comes with a pedometer, heart rate monitor, and a sleep monitor. Other built-in functions include a fitness app, exercise mode, stopwatch, timer, schedule, smart relay, media controller. Additionally, the users will get active notification alerts for SMS, calls, e-mail and apps on the Gear Fit.

5 Great Ways To Deal With Theory X Managers

5 Great Ways To Deal With Theory X Managers

5 Great Ways To Deal With Theory X Managers
Working for a Theory X manager can be really tricky. Here’s how you can deal with one

An American social psychologist, Douglas McGregor in his book ‘The Human Side of Enterprise’ in 1960 introduced the Theory X and Y. These theories are two contrasting models of workplace motivation that managers use to get their work done. On one hand there’s manager X, who has an authoritarian style of making his team work and on the other hand, there’s a manager Y, who believes that his team is self-motivated and work comes naturally to them and has a participative style of management. If your manager is an ardent follower of Theory X, you need to careful while dealing with him/her.
According to Jappreet Sethi, an HR expert and author of Humanresourcesblog.in, Theory X is based on the assumption that employees inherently dislike work and they only do it for money and from the fear of reappraisal due to non-completion of tasks allocated to them. Theory X promotes ‘authoritarian’ style of management and leads to hierarchical organisation with narrow responsibility areas, which are closely supervised.
Whereas, Theory Y is based on the assumption that work is as natural as play for employees and are self-directed if they are motivated. The theory further states that non-monetary facets drive motivation of employees like positive encouragement and personal growth. Theory Y assumes that all employees have potential and promotes ‘participative’ style of management.
Sethi opines that Theory X managers focus on tasks and are deadline focused. They believe that work need to be completed at all costs and there is no room for excuses. They use the carrot and stick approach to control the output. Theory X managers are not interested in investing in employee development and making them work on cross-functional development at organisations expense. This style is on contrast to Theory Y style that focuses more on the meaning of work, promotes employee development and instills sense of ownership with employees to complete the tasks.
According to Sethi, the following 5 ways can help you deal with Theory X managers:
  • Theory X managers are task-centered; so it will be a good idea to stick to facts and figures and give a very clear deadline on when the assigned task will be completed.
  • Orient your discussions around how you can deliver the results and don’t bring emotions in your discussions.
  • In case you find a deadline unrealistic make sure you point it out in a non-confronting manner or ask for additional resources that will enable the tasks to be completed.
  • The word trying to the best of your ability does not resonate well with these managers. Either you can do it or you cannot do it.
  • Theory X managers don’t like being questioned on the process recommended by them; in case you disagree, subtly make a hint that for the current task the process can be streamlined which will enable you to enhance the output or reduce time to deliver.
Dr. Jason Fitzsimmons, director of MBA programmes, GlobalNxt University, believes that both Theory X and Theory Y are in agreement that a manager’s responsibility is to plan, organise and coordinate workplace activities in order to meet organisational goals and maximise efficiencies. As such, both styles of management may have their place in the workforce where the primary need is to motivate employees and maximise productivity.

From A Techie To An Effective Manager: Dos & Don’ts

From A Techie To An Effective Manager: Dos & Don’ts

From A Techie To An Effective Manager: Dos & Don’ts
With time, even an IT professional aspires to be in a leadership position; but this demands a whole new skill set. It is therefore, crucial to know what to learn and unlearn as you transit from a tech to a managerial role
Taking a call
As a career progression step, an individual is expected to choose between tech specialisation and leading a team. It is at this juncture that a person has to start discussions with their immediate manager about which route to take. It requires a certain amount of preparation which in the long run will be beneficial.
Pruthvi Nanjappa, vice president – Human Resources, Ness Technologies (India) Pvt. Ltd. mentioned in one the TimesJobs.com High-Tea sessions that the first and foremost thing in the process of transiting from tech to managerial role is to express the intent to be a manager. “In addition, you should start a conversation with your immediate manager seeking support to move ahead in the organisation. Expecting automatic promotions to managerial roles will not help you,” he asserted.
Learn to delegate
While you have been doing all the work by yourself till date, being a manager, one needs to learn to get it done from others. This requires a paradigm shift in the attitude, perception and actions. While to some people, these things are inherent, others have to learn and acquire it, over a period of time. “As you start your management journey, you are required to demonstrate your ability to plan and execute with the help of other team members. Some of the aspects are about work planning, resource planning, time assignment, delegation, cost management, group motivation etc. You will have to get a deep understanding of these competencies,” stated Nanjappa.
Take up training
Management skills are not intrinsic to most, but one can learn how to become an effective manager. Nanjappa believes that a techie can transform to be a good manager, only if he takes into consideration few things. These include:
  • The intent to be a manager
  • Interest in work with people
  • Business understanding
  • Profit & loss considerations
  • People management process
Today, there are so many books, podcasts, webinars, seminars, blogs and online training tools available to develop basic management skills. Many organisations also offer leadership and management programmes and training. While all this is time consuming, this is an investment which will help in developing strong talent management skills and will be beneficial in the long-term, believe experts.

South Korean University now accepts gamers as student athletes

South Korean University now accepts gamers as student athletes

Man, remember how your folks would harass you about get ahead in life rather than molting in front of a video game for 42 hours on end? Throw this in your ma's face: Chung-Ang University in South Korea now considers competitive gamers the same as traditional athletes. And it's a top 10 (South Korean) school!

The university will begin accepting eSports applicants starting next year, with students matriculating into the school's Department of Sport Science - previously home to the ball sports you'd generally associate with college athletes.

The move seems a little non-traditional, but let's not forget that South Korea has a robust gaming community that's a bit more mainstream than it is in places like the US Live public gaming tournaments are a spectacle in South Korea, often televised with the kind of fanfare we associate with professional wrestling.

Now that Chung-Ang University is accepting gamer-athletes, we can only hope the next step is a giant badass gaming stadium on campus.

Online Employer Branding Is Key To Attract Good Talent

Online Employer Branding Is Key To Attract Good Talent

Online Employer Branding Is Key To Attract Good Talent
Irrespective of the company size, it’s important to build a strong employer brand name on the internet

A large number of employers now-a-days are tracking prospective candidates on the internet and analysing their social media presence to determine their fitment in their organisation. Even candidates have become very particular when it comes to choosing their employer. They leverage the power of the internet to find the right career option. According to a TimesJobs.com poll, 65 per cent respondents would research the right sector and company needed for their career growth. Another 45 per cent would check and access jobs from multiple sources on the internet.
“There is often a lot of focus and talk about organisations finding the right talent that align with their competence and cultural needs. What is equally important is for the job seeker to find an organisation that reflects and supports his/her values and career objectives,” stated Chinmayi VS, head- Human Resources, Maxim Integrated, during one of the TimesJobs.com High-Tea chat session.
She believes that a job seeker’s primary goal is to seek an organisation that offers him/her a good role with learning and career progression opportunities, along with a good working culture. He/she would be spending at least 40 hours, five days a week in an organisation; therefore it is important that a job seeker finds an organisation and colleagues reflect the values he/she believes in.
“There are websites that reflect employee ratings that certainly provide a generic view of the employee engagement and culture but it may not be accurate. A job seeker can explore the company’s work culture and career opportunity system directly on their website or by contacting employees of the company,” she highlighted.
It’s imperative for organisations to engage job-seekers online to attract the best talent. Leveraging the power of social media can prove to be a highly effective method to tap into this talent pool. During one of the recent TimesJobs.com Boardroom Dialogues, Rajesh Pandey, vice president – Human Resources, OnMobile Global Ltd, highlighted that social media plays a key role in employer branding, so does word-of-mouth. Therefore, it’s very critical to manage your organisational brand on social media and the internet.
According to Dalbir Singh, India staffing director, Microsoft India, engaging candidates on the web is imperative for attracting good talent. He highlighted that, in spite of being such an impressive brand, Microsoft still has to engage talent online as much as any other organisation.  They are actively involved in blogging, conducting webinars and promoting dedicated pages. “Put your opportunity across, if it excites them, they will come to you,” he stated.

Sebi strips FTIL of ‘fit and proper’ tag

Sebi strips FTIL of ‘fit and proper’ tag

MUMBAI: Market regulator Sebi on Wednesday said that Jignesh Shah-promoted Financial Technologies (FTIL) was not a 'fit and proper' entity to hold stake in any stock exchange or a clearing corporation for a stock exchange. Sebi also directed FTIL to divest all its stakes in MCX Stock Exchange (MCX-SX), MCX-SX Clearing Corporation, Delhi Stock Exchange (DSE), Vadodara Stock Exchange (VSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) within the next three months.

The regulatory order came in relation to FTIL's role in the Rs 5,600-crore NSEL scam, which in turn had prompted the Forward Markets Commission (FMC), the regulator for the commodity derivatives market, declaring FTIL as not a 'fit and proper' entity to hold stakes in any commodity exchange.

The late evening order from Sebi said that FTIL was not a "'fit and proper person' to acquire or hold any equity share or any instrument that provides for entitlement for equity shares or rights over equity shares at any future date, in a recognized stock exchange or clearing corporation, either directly or indirectly." It also directed that FTIL and the related entities which hold equity shares or any instrument entitling voting rights in MCX-SX, MCX-SX CCL, DSE, VSE and NSE should cease to be entitled to such rights with immediate effect.

The 11-page order by Rajeev Kumar Agarwal, a whole-time Sebi member, said that it was primarily based on an FMC order of December 17 last year that said that FTIL was being declared not a 'fit and proper person' to hold shares in Multi Commodity Exchange "in public interest and in the interest of the commodities derivatives market".

The genesis of these regulatory orders date back to July 31 last when NSEL declared its inability to pay about Rs 5,600 crore to investors and a payment crisis ensued. Later several of the top NSEL officials were arrested by the investigative agencies. Shah and other current and former directors of the group were also questioned. Recently CBI also started a probe against two former top Sebi officials, C B Bhave and K M Abraham, and also Shah to look into how the group managed to get the regulatory nod to start a stock exchange. Last week, FTIL also sold its 100% holding in National Bulk Handling Corp (NBHC), its warehousing business, for about Rs 240 crore.

The Sebi order said that FTIL was issued a show-cause notice as to why it should not be declared 'fit and proper' entity. Subsequently, representatives of FTIL had presented their case to the regulator. One of the main points presented by FTIL to Sebi was that FMC did not 'direct' FTIL to divest its stake in MCX but merely 'advised' it to do so. However, Sebi found FTIL's was a fit case to declare it as an entity not 'fit and proper person' to hold any stake in any stock exchange or a clearing corporation.

A key morning breakfast food has just got better. The soluble fibre in oats helps lower total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or 'bad' cholesterol but scientists now say that the cardiovascular health benefits of oats goes beyond fibre.

The phenolic compound avenanthramide (AVE) - found only in oats - may possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-itch and anti-cancer properties.

It suggests that oat AVEs may play an important role in protecting the heart.

Eating whole grains is consistently associated with a reduced risk of chronic disease, including cardiovascular disease.

"Our studies reveal that the heart health benefit of eating oats may go beyond fibre," said Shengmin Sang from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

The soluble fibre beta-glucan found in oats has been recognised for its ability to lower both total and LDL cholesterol.

According to Mohsen Meydani from the Vascular Biology Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Centre on Aging at Tufts University, oat AVEs suppress the production of inflammatory cytokines associated with fatty streak formation in the arteries.

In addition, oat AVEs appear to repress the process associated with the development of atherosclerosis.

Eleven top scientists from around the globe presented the latest findings on the powerful compounds found in oats in a scientific session titled 'Physicochemical Properties and Biological Functionality of Oats' at the 247th Annual Conference of the American Chemical Society in Dallas, Texas, recently.

Qantas reduces TCS contract size
TCS is expected to be a loser in a new contract that Australian carrier Qantas is close to finalizing.
BANGALORE: TCS is expected to be a loser in a new contract that Australian carrier Qantas is close to finalizing. The publication The Australian has reported that Qantas intends to consolidate its IT vendors to achieve significant cost savings and has awarded the master service agreement of the $800 million contract to IBM. Some of this work that was previously done by TCS and Tech Mahindra will move to IBM. "The seven-year agreement will result in up to 400 employees from TCS and Tech Mahindra working on the Qantas contract transition to IBM to continue their current duties," the article said. India's largest IT services company has a $120 million IT contract for application, development and maintenance. But the larger outsourcing contract with IBM might reduce TCS's scope of work to about $30-40 million, the article said. When TOI reached out to TCS for comments, the company said it does not comment on client-specific information.
