Micromax has finally launched the Bolt A37 budget smartphone for the Indian market. The Micromax Bolt A37 is now available on company's online store at Rs. 3,999, and the listing notes that the smartphone will be delivered in 7 to 10 business days. The Bolt A37 was recently listed on Micromax's site without price.
The Micromax Bolt A37 comes with identical specifications to the Bolt A37B listed on company's site on recently with price.
The Micromax Bolt A37, much like Bolt A37B runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box. The Bolt A37 is a dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) device, and supports regular SIM size. It comes with 3.5-inch TFT display with 320x480 pixels (HVGA) resolution, and is powered by a 1GHz MediaTek MTK6572M processor along with 256MB of RAM.

It includes 512MB of inbuilt storage which is further expandable up to 32GB via microSD card. The Micromax Bolt A37 sports a 2-megapixel rear camera, though there is no word on the front camera. The device packs a 1450mAh battery, which according to the listing can give a standby time of up to 256 hours, and talktime of up to 5.5 hours. Connectivity options on the Bolt A37 include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Micro-USB, GPRS, EDGE and 3G.
Earlier this week, Micromax expanded its Bolt smartphone series and introduced the Bolt A46 for the Indian market.
The Micromax Bolt A46 runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box. The Bolt A46 is a dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) device, and supports regular SIM size. It comes with 4-inch TFT display with 480x800 pixels (WVGA) resolution, and is powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz MediaTek MTK 6572 processor along with 256MB of RAM.
It includes 512MB of inbuilt storage which is further expandable up to 32GB with microSD card. The Micromax Bolt A46 sports a 2-megapixel rear camera with flash, though there is no word on the front-facing camera. The device packs a 1500mAh battery, which according to the listing can give a standby time of up to 180 hours, and talktime of up to 4.5 hours.
Connectivity options on the Bolt A46 include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Micro-USB, GPRS, and EDGE. Notably, the Micromax Bolt A46 does not support 3G network connectivity.

Nokia X, the rumoured budget Android smartphone also known as Nokia Normandy, has been again spotted under a benchmark which tests the camera section of the handset.
Nokia X has been spotted under the CamSpeed test database, the benchmark test for Sophica with a nearly zero focusing time, hinting the rumoured Android device will come with a fixed focus camera. The device was identified with model name RM-980 once again.
The Nokia X handset, handset was previously said to sport a 5-megapixel rear camera, however the CamSpeed benchmark hints the handset will arrive with a lower 3-megapixel shooter.
Similarly, contradicting the previous rumours of running a highly customized version of Android 4.4 Kitkat OS, the Nokia X will be running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean OS, according to Sofica's Twitter post.
Also last week, a new leak via Browsermark 2 benchmark's database purportedly revealed the alleged Nokia X phone to come with model number RM-980. Unfortunately, the listing did not reveal any details about the device, but includes an image that purportedly showed Nokia X wearing Nexus 5's wallpaper and home screen icons.
Some of the other rumoured features of the Nokia X smartphone include a dual-core Snapdragon processor clocking at 1GHz, a 4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 480x854 (FWVGA) pixels, 4GB storage with microSD card, 1500mAh battery, 512MB RAM, and dual-SIM support.
Besides the often appearing leaks online, one can almost confirm the existence of the handset through various other sources. Recently enough, Nokia X was reported to get certified in Indonesia and Malaysia. The handset is said to fall under Nokia's Asha line-up and will be unveiled officially in March, according to a report claiming to quote an unnamed senior Nokia India executive.

Samsung's much-anticipated Galaxy S5 has been reportedly spotted on AnTuTu benchmark listings, along with details of the innards of the device.
An Italian publication has posted the AnTuTu benchmark screenshots of the yet-to-be-announcedSamsung Galaxy S5. However, the site clearly reveals that the benchmarks have been tested on a prototype or a beta version of the device and not a final product. As per the site, the alleged prototype of the Galaxy S5 has been sent to major mobile carriers for testing purposes.
According to the site, the Galaxy S5 will sport a 16-megapixel rear camera and will be powered by a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor. Further, the leaked benchmark screenshots reveal a full-HD display in tow offering a pixel density of 480ppi.
Notably, the device being said to be the prototype of the Galaxy S5 is seen running Android 4.4.2 KitKat version. The leaked screenshots also show the alleged prototype of the Galaxy S5 scoring a remarkable 35,666, and is seen leading smartphones like Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Sony Xperia Z Ultra, LG G2, Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One.
Samsung has already sent media invites for its "UnPacked 5" event, where the company is said to unveil the next Galaxy flagship smartphone at the sidelines of MWC 2014 on February 24 in Barcelona.
On Thursday, a report citing an insider with knowledge of Samsung's plans suggested that the Galaxy S5 unveiling will be a low-key event. According to the report, Samsung Galaxy S4's underperformance in terms of sales, despite of a flashy launch in New York last year has been a reason for the company to go for a toned-down event.
In addition, the report also noted that Samsung could showcase the Galaxy Gear successor along with Galaxy S5 at MWC, something we've heard previously, from a Samsung VP.
The Galaxy S5 is widely expected to feature the fingerprint scanner, which is said to be integrated into the device's display panel.

Xolo has expanded its Q smartphone series and introduced the Q1100. The Xolo Q1100 is now listed on the official website with a price of Rs. 14,999. However, there is no word on the availability of the latest Q1100 smartphone.
The Xolo Q1100 runs Android 4.3 out-of-the-box, the highlight of the device, which makes it the latest Android version in Xolo's smartphone line-up.
The Xolo Q1100 smartphone offers dual-SIM (GSM-GSM) support. The new Android smartphone from Xolo features a 5-inch HD IPS display with a 720x1280 pixel resolution, translating to a pixel density of 294ppi, and boasts One Glass Solution (OGS). A quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (MSM 8228) processor powers the device, clocked at 1.4GHz with an Adreno 305 GPU and 1GB of RAM.
The Xolo Q1100 sports an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and BSI 2 sensor, while there is a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. The Xolo Q1100 handset comes with 8GB of in-built storage, and can be expanded up to 32GB via microSD card.
The Xolo Q1100 supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, AGPS, EDGE, GPRS and 3G connectivity options. It is backed by a 2000mAh battery, which according to the official site can deliver up to 24 hours of talktime and 600 hours of standby time on 2G network. The Xolo Q1100 is available in Black colour variant.
On Thursday, Xolo unveiled the A500 Club at Rs. 7,099 for the Indian market. The Xolo A500 Clubsmartphone offers dual-SIM (GSM-GSM) support with dual standby and runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box. The budget Android smartphone features a 4-inch IPS display with a (WVGA) 480x800 pixel resolution. A dual-core MediaTek MTK 6572 processor powers the device, clocked at 1.3GHz with a Mali-400 MP for graphics and 512MB of RAM.
The smartphone sports a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, while there is a 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera. The Xolo A500 Club handset comes with a 4GB in-built storage, and can be expanded up to 32GB via microSD card.
In addition, the Xolo Q1010 was also spotted listed at an e-commerce website without price, or availability, with the online retailer's page providing a 'Notify Me' option.

A fierce battle for female talent is set to erupt at the IIM placement season this month as a bunch of marquee recruiters - all keen to improve their diversity scores – prepare to swoop in on the limited women graduates passing out of the institutes this year.

Exactly 533 women, or 22% of the class of 2,442 students, will graduate from six leading IIMs this year. But combined demand from leading companies is likely to be higher.
A sample of leading recruiters – Bain & Company, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, American Express, PepsiCo and Bharti Airtel - are keen to ensure that as high as 28-50% of their B-School hires this year are women.
This excess demand for women in comparison to the gender ratio at IIMs is likely to spark a talent war in the coming weeks.
Bain & Co’s plans this placement season are a good indicator of things to come. The consulting firm – one of the biggest recruiters at Harvard, Stanford and Wharton – is likely to ensure that 50% of its US B-School hires are women. The mandate for India hiring is not very different.
NO DIFFERENTIAL COMPENSATION
“We believe gender diversity is an important way of bringing new ideas to clients,” says Russ Hagey, worldwide chief talent officer and senior partner at Bain & Company. “Across the globe, we are asking all our offices, including India, to be highly mindful of this at campuses.”
Adds Nikhil Prasad Ojha, strategy head of Bain & Co India and a partner who oversees HR: “We will definitely be increasing the intake of talented women this year. Gender diversity helps us in developing more innovative and collaborative approaches.”
About half of the management trainees PepsiCo recruited through pre-placement offers this year have been women, up from 30% last year.
American Express wants to ensure that 40% of B-School grads hired this year are women, up from 30% during the past two years. 
At Citi too, women are expected to constitute about 40% of total hires through business schools in 2014. “A gender-diverse workforce understands clients better and is more creative and innovative,” says Anuranjita Kumar, country human resources officer for Citi India. “A higher intake of women talent across campuses provides a steady pipeline at the mid and senior levels.”
Axis Bank will recruit only women from ISB’s flagship post-graduate in management programme. This is part of a special programme called ‘Diversified Leadership Among Women in Banking’ that it runs at the B-School.
Over the past year, Goldman Sachs has extended an additional 83 professional and 57 internship offers to female graduates, a 7% and 10% increase each. V Bunty Bohra, the CEO of Goldman Sachs in India, says the critical elements of its business would only be possible with a strategic recruitment policy focused on inclusion.
In the past three years, Goldman Sachs has increased its offers to women by approximately 45% and internships by 43% for female graduates. Airtel has 28% of the total hires as women so far. “Promoting diversity across functions stimulates innovation with diverse ideas and boosts the growth potential for the company,” says an Airtel spokesperson.
For the moment, companies maintain they won’t offer differential compensation for women. “We won’t bend rules to pick a female graduate over a male graduate, but we would go with the female graduates if all other parameters are in place,” says Sachin Nandgaonkar, senior partner and director for BCG in India, and the head of recruitments for the firm. It is hoping that at least a third of its B-School recruits this year are women.
“We have only two women partners in our 10-year history. The numbers are much lower than what we would like,” says Nandgaonkar.

However, just like the market, career options are also volatile. If the business grows, firms will recruit, if it doesn’t then there will be lesser requirement.

B S Shantharaju of Indus Towers shares his first job experience.

My First Job: I started as a management trainee (Finance) in Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Here I got the real foundation and understanding of a job at the young age of 25. I handled a team of 33 people, most of them being senior to me in age.
My experience: In my 30+ years of professional life, I have had a varied and rich work experience. Before joining Indus Towers in 2009 I was with Delhi International Airports Pvt. Ltd. as the CEO after the airport was privatized. Prior to that, I was the managing director for Gujarat Gas Company Ltd.
I have spent a major part of my career with SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals (currently part of Glaxo SmithKline) as finance director of India and country head of Bangladesh.
Things I learnt: Value an individual for the strength he has got; do not worry about weakness of an individual unless it is disruptive. Focus on the variety of skills rather than his years of experience. Good talent needs to be tested in a frying pan to understand their ability to rise above the bar and the behaviours exhibited in a very strenuous job.

Skills I acquired: 
Communication and story-telling is my biggest strength. I can articulate the business issues in a simple language so that people focus on key issues. I learnt how to focus on vision and values so that people work in a trusted environment for a larger purpose. I can seamlessly move from strategic issues to operational issues which is important for a balanced business.

My Manager’s teaching: 
Strategy is all about execution. Focus only on people. I am fortunate to have had some tough bosses who improved my performance, but also very humane in living with my emotions and shortcomings.

My Journey so far: 
My motto in life is ‘to make a substantial difference to the lives of people in society’, and that’s the reason I choose to work in the Infrastructure sector.
At Delhi Airport, every assignment I worked on made significant differences in the lives of people. When I handled Delhi Airport after privatisation, the task was to bring customer focus and build a strong team which could give distinct identity to Delhi Airport. Now it is rated 4th best in the world by Airport Council International.
Turning point in my career: My biggest change happened when I become the CFO at of 33 for a large public listed MNC. My personal transformation happened in 1996 when I wrote the purpose statement of my life – “I will make a positive difference to the lives of people in society and around me”.
My most crucial step/assignment: Getting into the role of a country head in 1999. The job opened my eyes to the complexity of the role and also gave me a platform to build my skills for larger roles. Bangladesh also opened my eyes for deep cultural sensitivities and transforming that market in a short time, gave me immense confidence in myself.
Working in 9 different cities (being transferred in some of my jobs) I have learnt immensely on how to handle uncertainty/ambiguity as well as appreciate different cultures.

My advice: 
Focus on variety of skills, not too much on knowledge. Experience different locations – it adds immensely to the experience and cultural sensitivities.
Where I see myself 5 years from now: From being a porter in a vegetable market at the age of 12 and later turning into a CEO of large MNC and now the World’s largest telecom tower company is a dream run. Having lived the purpose of my life through the corporate world, I intend to work with NGOs and touch the lives of people positively.

Scientists say Short Man Syndrome really exists. In new tests, people who were "shrunk" became paranoid, distrustful and scared of others.


Using virtual reality to reduce volunteers' heights, Oxford University researchers found they were more likely to think other people were staring at them or talking about them on a computer-generated train. Professor Daniel Freeman said, "We know people behave in VR as they do in real life." But what else does your height say about you? Today we check the evidence.

Longer lives 
Studies show that shorter people live longer. Recent research analysing the lives of 500 males born between 1866-1915 on the Italian island of Sardinia showed those below 5ft 4in lived an average two years longer than taller men. The study suggested the reasons included lower DNA damage, greater cell replacement potential and greater efficiency of heart-pumping. Other studies show shorter women live longer too.

Intelligence 
Taller people are likely to be more intelligent, according to several studies. Research in 2006 at Princeton University found "as early as three... taller children perform significantly better in cognitive tests". Last year a team at the University of Colorado found that the link between height and intelligence was down to breeding. They showed that clever people are likely to choose taller people as partners — and vice versa.

Money 
Researchers at the University of Sydney compared the wage packets of 20,000 people using indicators including weight and height, and found increased height translated into more cash on average.

Ambition
Shorter women are less ambitious, say academics at St Andrews and Stirling universities. They found they are more likely to start a family than focus on their career. Clinical psychologist Dr Miriam Law Smith said: "Men across are taller than women and height must therefore be an indicator of greater physical masculinity. The physiology of the body controls the psychology of the mind."

Better life partners 
Tall men earn more, are brighter and have more kids — but shorter blokes make better husbands. A study asked women to pick their ideal height difference for both short and long-term relationships from couple photos. The findings, published in Biological Psychology, found tall men were twice as popular for flings than for long-term relationships. Psychologist Dr Nick Neave said, "The real leaders of the pack tend to not be very nice people. You don't want them around kids and they can be violent and leave you for someone else.
"

LONDON: Kevin Pietersen's England career was ended because of a total loss of trust between him and the team's management, according to former captain Andrew Strauss.

The England and Wales Cricket Broad (ECB) announced the end of Pietersen's association with England earlier this week, citing a need for a new "team ethic and philosophy" after the 5-0 Test series defeat in Australia.

The ECB is yet to fully explain its reasons for deciding to jettison Pietersen, but Strauss believes it was the inevitable consequence of a breakdown in trust.

"Without trust, the team environment is stillborn," he wrote in British newspaper the Sunday Times.

"It is for this reason that Kevin Pietersen's international career had to be brought to an end.

"The media have been searching for a 'smoking gun'. Everyone is looking for disciplinary problems, bust-ups and character clashes, but they are looking for the wrong thing.

"The smoking gun is the total absence of trust." Strauss identified Pietersen's dismissal as England captain five years ago as the beginning of the breakdown.

He also said that efforts to reintegrate the South Africa-born batsman into the team after he was found to have sent derogatory text messages about Strauss to opposition players were "a little like marriage counselling".

On Pietersen's role in the recent Ashes whitewash, Strauss added: "What happened in Australia from November onwards, when the heat of the furnace was fixed on the embattled side, was that old grievances came back to the surface. Past history weighed too heavily. Trust still did not exist.

"His relationship with English cricket has been like an illicit affair. Full of thrills and excitement, but destined to end in tears.
"

Facebook at 10: Adapting to an aging user base

As Facebook celebrates its 10th anniversary, the world's biggest social network is finding its path as a maturing company, adapting to an aging user base.
The company created in a Harvard dorm room in 2004 has established itself as a phenomenon, securing its place in the world of the technology giants.
"Facebook has made the world much smaller, much more interactive," said Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry.
"Facebook started the social revolution but it may not be able to control it."
In its short history, Facebook has become a part of daily life for more than a billion people around the globe.
Co-founder Mark Zuckerberg described the mission as "making the world more open and connected," and some say he has accomplished just that.
"More than 20 percent of all time spent on the Internet is spent on Facebook," says Lou Kerner, founder of the Social Internet Fund.
Yet in some ways, Facebook could be the victim of its own success.
Its initial core base of teens and university students has expanded, and Facebook is now widely used by people in all age groups.
Facebook says it has a global total of 1.23 billion monthly active users, including 945 million who use the social network on a mobile device. But some analysts note that Facebook has to shift strategy for an aging user base.
An iStrategyLabs study of US Facebook users found a 25 percent drop in the number of users in the 13-17 age group, along with an 80 percent jump in the number of users over 55.
"People joke that for the teen, Facebook isn't cool when your mom is on it," Kerner said. "I think it's not even your mom any more, now it's also your grandmother."
The research firm Social Bakers says its data shows teens are a big and still-growing part of Facebook.
"The 18-24 year-old age group is still the largest," said the group's Ben Harper.
"Our data shows the growth of audience and interactions on Facebook, and while teens are undoubtedly using multiple platforms (as we all are), they are also sticking with Facebook."
In the United States, Facebook is used by 71 percent of all adults who are on the Internet, or 57 percent of the adult population, according to the Pew Research Center.
Pew found that while Facebook is used by 89 percent of online adults in the 18-29 age group, it is also used by 60 percent in the 50-64 age category and 45 percent of those over 65.
Facebook is maturing as a company as well. It had a calamitous initial public offering in May 2012 plagued by technical glitches, and saw its share price slump by half, but has been on a roll for the past year, with its stock hitting record highs.
Facebook has reassured its investors it can generate advertising revenue, particularly in the mobile segment used by an increasing number of members.
Facebook reported its profit for the full year 2013 jumped to $1.5 billion from just $53 million in 2012, and revenues increased to $7.87 billion from $5.1 billion.
According to the research firm eMarketer, Facebook has become the second-largest recipient of digital advertising spending behind Google, and is particularly strong in mobile ads.
"Facebook appears the best way to play the social Internet," Morgan Stanley analysts said in a note to clients, preferring Facebook to the up-and-coming network Twitter.
Some analysts point out that Facebook's appeal to grownups is a big part of maturation, and represents the key to generating revenue and profit.
"Advertisers place promotional content on Facebook for one reason only to generate sales," said analysts at the research firm Trefis.
"The vast majority of purchases made online come from users of ages 25 and above. One study suggests it is as high as 85 percent. With these figures in mind, the decline in users ages 13-24 becomes almost irrelevant."
Kerner note that being "cool" is not necessarily Facebook's long-term goal.
"You can't be the cool place forever," he told AFP.
"One of two things happen to companies when they're done being cool. They either go away, or they transition to becoming more of a utility. And Facebook is very successfully doing the latter."
