Engadget China reported the launch first, noting that TCL has bundled the Idol X+ with a Boom Band, which is a Bluetooth-enabled wristband that is available in various colours. The site claims that the Boom Band can work as a proximity alarm, if in case a user forgets the phone behind. The Boom Band is compatible with the Idol X+ via a companion app, which also tracks user's fitness. As of now, there is no word whether the Boom Band will work only with newly launched Idol X+, or if it is compatible with other Android smartphones also..
The Alcatel Idol X+ is the successor to the Idol X launched in September this year and features upgraded specifications.

iOS users outspent shoppers on Android 5 to 1 this Christmas Day: IBM

iOS users outspent shoppers on Android 5 to 1 this Christmas Day: IBM

wonder-woman-smartphone-635.jpg
iOS device users were more prolific online shoppers in the US on Christmas Day, compared to their Android device counterparts, reveals a report by IBM.
IBM has shared the online shopping trends for December 25, Christmas Day in the US via its IBM digital analytics benchmark, revealing some interesting statistics related to Apple and Androidplatforms, apart from mobile and tablet shopping as a whole. According to IBM, raw data was analysed from approximately 800 retail sites across the US.
As per IBM, out of the total online sales in the US in the Christmas period, iOS accounted for five times the traffic of Android, driving 23 percent of total online sales traffic when compared to Android's 4.6 percent. The report also reveals that on average, iOS users spent $93.94 per purchase order, while Android users spent $48.10 per order, almost half.
Further, IBM also informs that the mobile traffic accounted for 48 percent of all online traffic on Christmas Eve, which was up 28.3 percent compared to the same period in 2012. Of the total online traffic, iOS accounted 32.6 percent compared to Android's 14.8 percent. Mobile sales were also strong in the period, approaching 29 percent of all online sales, up 40 percent from the same period in 2012.
In addition, the report also informs that smartphones (28.5 percent) drove more traffic than tablets (18.1 percent), which made it the browsing device of choice. However, in terms making the sale, the tablets contributed with 19.4 percent of all online sales and an average of $95.61 per order, compared to 9.3 percent on smartphones which averaged $85.11 per order.
We have already heard reports that claimed the smartphones powered by Google's Android OS have increased their global market share outnumbering other platforms. The International Data Corporation (IDC) reported earlier that Android's share of the smartphone market grew to 79.3 percent in the second quarter while that of iPhone slipped to 13.2 percent from 16.6 percent in the same three-month period (second quarter) last year.
Apple finally kicked off the festive season, with its 12 Days of Gifts promotion, via the app by the same name on Thursday. The promotion will be valid in all regions where the iTunes app store lists the app.
Apple would be giving away various digital content freebies, including apps, e-books, movies, music, and more. However, content would vary from region to region, depending on the availability of the product or service - in Apple's words, "Not all content is available in all countries."

LG G3 specifications leaked, include Quad-HD display and octa-core chipset

lg-g2-black-colour-model-635.jpg
LG has reportedly started working on its next flagship smartphone, rumoured to be called LG G3, which will see a major upgrade in specifications.
ZDNet Korea in a report has claimed that the South Korean manufacturer has started the development of its next flagship smartphone, which will see the light of day in the second half of 2014. The report cites some industry sources and reveals that the alleged LG G3 will sport a 1440x2560 pixels QHD (Quad HD) display, however no word on screen size, yet.
Further, the report claims that the alleged LG G3 will pack an octa-core chipset, believed to be codenamed LG Odin, which is being developed by the company itself. In addition, the rumoured LG G3 is expected to pack a 16-megapixel rear camera.
It's worth pointing out that Samsung is also said to equip a QHD display on its upcoming flagship smartphone (thought to be called the Galaxy S5) and for the camera sensor, Samsung is likely to use a 16-megapixel camera module.
LG can be expected to launch the successor to the LG G2 in 2014, in a bid to overcome 'disappointing' G2 sales.
When LG launched the G2 in August this year, the smartphone created a lot of buzz thanks to its unique design, as it features the power button and the volume rocker on the back of the phone, instead of the sides of the phone, as is usually the case.
However, a recent report has revealed that LG has been unable to cash-in much on its uniquely designed LG G2 smartphone. As per the report, LG had sold around 600,000 units of G2 in South Korea since the launch; internationally the South Korean major sold about 2.3 million units, while the company had set a sales target of 3 million for the G2 globally.
LG has also been rumoured to be working on a mini-variant of its flagship smartphone, the G2, believed to be dubbed LG G2 mini. The rumoured device was allegedly been spotted at a benchmark listing.

After Split, Walmart And Bharti Retail Issue Pink Slips To Employees

After Split, Walmart And Bharti Retail Issue Pink Slips To Employees

After Split, Walmart And Bharti Retail Issue Pink Slips To Employees
In 2006, Bharti Retail and Walmart Stores had joined hands promising to create thousands of direct jobs in India.
Seven years later, the two former partners are retrenching employees and the Indian company is preparing to shutter some unviable Easyday stores, as they restructure their operations following a split two months ago.
According to three persons familiar with the development, Bharti has issued pink slips to over 100 employees. Bharti Retail and its holding company Cedar Support Services employed 330 people in their corporate offices and this number has now come down to 220 after the recent cull.
One executive who lost his job told ET that termination notices were handed over by Bharti Retail’s HR Vice-President Sandeep Gautam last week. In addition to three months wages, the sacked employees have been given 15 days salary for each year they worked with the company.
In October, while announcing the separation from Walmart, Bharti Enterprises Vice-Chairman Rajan Mittal had said there would be no job losses and the company would retain employees. “People were hopeful after Mittal’s assurance, but it turns out we were kept in the dark,” said a sacked employee, who did not wish to be named.
After Split, Walmart and Bharti Retail issue pink slips to employees
The biggest hit was taken by Cedar Support Services, the controversial holding company of Bharti Retail in which Walmart had invested $100 million at a time India banned any foreign capital in multi-brand retail. Almost 60% of Cedar’s employees, including senior vice-presidents of facilities and logistics and the GM for facilities and HR were handed pink slips, according to the people quoted above.
“Cedar Support Services provided real estate advisory, facilities management, design and construction and other services to both cash & carry and front-end retail businesses. Following the restructuring of operations, wherein the cash & carry business was acquired by Walmart, the roles of some employees, including those supporting the cash & carry business at Cedar, have become surplus to our requirements,” said a Bharti spokesperson in an emailed reply.
Almost a dozen jobs at Bharti Retail were made redundant in operations while out of the 24 employees in marketing, only half-a-dozen have been retained. Nandini Sethuraman, the company’s marketing head, is moving to Walmart, while some employees are returning to group companies.
As a result of this downsizing, Bharti Retail will vacate its two-floor office at Centrum Plaza on the Golf Course Road in Gurgaon and shift to Bharti Airtel’s office in Gurgaon by January 27.
While announcing its entry in the front-end retail sector in 2008, Bharti Retail had said it planned to invest up to $2.5 billion by 2015, and employ about 60,000 people. As of last count, the company employed around 5,500-6,000 employees.
Bharti Retail’s former partner, Walmart, too is laying off around 50 employees, said sources. The company spokesperson did not confirm the figure but conceded the cash & carry company was “letting go of some of our talent”.
“Given the evolution of our business profile in India, some difficult decisions have to be made that include letting go of some of our talent. We will assist our associates through this transition with the appropriate resources,” said the Walmart spokesperson.
But the Bentonville-headquartered company has also given retention bonuses of $150,000-200,000 each to around six executives, said persons familiar with the development. Cash & carry business head Arvind Mediratta and HR head Riju Vashisht have been shifted to Walmart’s Canadian and US operations, respectively.
“Walmart is committed to India and the market. We are pleased with our established and successful cash & carry business and plan to grow that business. We remain steadfast in our belief in the important value Walmart brings to India, including social and environmental benefits,” the Walmart spokesperson said.

8.5 Lakh New Jobs Expected In 2014: Report

8.5 Lakh New Jobs Expected In 2014: Report
8.5 Lakh New Jobs Expected In 2014: Report
Job seekers can look forward to a prosperous new year as more than 8.5 lakh new jobs are expected across various sectors, including FMCG and healthcare, says a survey.
Coming against the backdrop of uncertain economic conditions, the projected number of new jobs in 2014 is higher than the estimated 7.9 lakh employment opportunities created this year, according to the survey by recruitment platform MyHiringClub.com.
The findings are based on a study conducted among more than 5,600 firms across 12 industry sectors.
All the opportunities have been projected in for the organised sector, it added.
Besides FMCG, more jobs are expected in healthcare, IT, retail and hospitality sectors.
“Last calendar year was not good either for job seekers or for employers due to uncertain and fluctuated economical and political conditions. 2014 is coming with positive vibes for job-seekers and expected to create 8.5 lakh new jobs in different sectors,” MyHiringClub.com CEO Rajesh Kumar said.
“Finding employees who have employability or job readiness skills that help fit into and remain in the work environment is a real problem and threatening to growth. These issues need to be addressed on priority,” he added.
MyHiringClub.com’s survey showed that FMCG would lead the chart and is expected to generate 1.5 lakh new jobs, followed by healthcare (1.33 lakh), IT and ITeS (1.21 lakh), retail (86,700) and hospitality (83,400).
Banking and financial services (61,400), manufacturing and engineering (51,500), education, training and consultancy (42,900), media and entertainment (42,800) and real estate (38,700) are also expected to create job opportunities.
Another HR expert Prachi Kumari, Director at Sat-n-Merc Manpower Consultant said: “Recruitment activity in 2013 went slow beyond our expectation across every levels, majorly recruitments were done only to replace major gaps.

“Coming year 2014 seems very promising. To increase their revenue, companies need to feel the long time vacant positions and also they have to create more jobs as compared to 2013. Overall, it seems the worst condition is over for the job market and we are entering in a zone of another two years of positive growth if not more,” she added.

2014 May Be The Sunshine Year For Young Professionals

2014 May Be The Sunshine Year For Young Professionals
2014 May Be The Sunshine Year For Young Professionals
Professionals with a technical degree and a working experience of a few years are expected to be on high demand going forward.
If you are an engineering professional working for a small salary for the past four years, there is great news for you. According to several HR professionals, a candidate with a technical degree and a working experience of a few years will be in high demand in 2014.
With steady increase in business and the need to move up the value chain in the services as well as products business sectors, the requirement of professionals with technical knowledge and team management experience is expected to grow.  This trend is expected to spur the recruitment of the young experienced professional.
“The impact of slowdown and a gloomy business scenario have had its impact on managerial talent and extremely strong organisations have resorted to layoffs, extended block closures and leave without pay in 2013. The services sector, in comparison, has done very well, with many success stories of PE funding,’’ says Rahul Nene, partner, DEININGER Management Consultants Pvt. Ltd. “Thus organisations which have followed prudent norms of governance and kept costs on a tight leash,  are the ones that emerged stronger than before, and this holds true for employees as well.”
This trend is expected to spur hiring of personnel with hands-on experience on working in a tight market; someone who understands the necessity of being a team player and ready to come for less than what the more experienced officials would expect.
“The global IT scenario has changed. The way the world does business today is markedly different from how it used to be five years back. The employee with a few years of experience is being forced to multitask, and produce results within a shorter timeframe, on a smaller budget. Also, his salary expectations are much less than someone with 10 years of experience. All these factors make young professionals a lucrative option to prospective employers,’’ says Hema. S of Apollo Health Street.
“These young professionals not only have the required hands-on experience of the workings, but because of the work scenario, have been able to build necessary skills to deliver more than the required job responsibilities. This makes them ideal for jobs like the engineering manager or product marketing manager,” says Nene.
Personnel with skills such as attention to details, an eye for quality, the ability to grasp and translate technical capabilities into benefits, along with a technical degree are what employers would be looking to recruit, going forward says Hema.

Careers expected to be much in demand include engineering managers, product managers (marketing and technical development), IT Manager and solution development professionals.

“Demand For Taxation Professionals And Financial Controllers Will Increase In 2014”

Interview Of The Day: “Demand For Taxation Professionals And Financial Controllers Will Increase In 2014”
Interview Of The Day: “Demand For Taxation Professionals And Financial Controllers Will Increase In 2014”
Nicolas Dumoulin, regional director, Michael Page India, shares the job outlook for the Finance discipline.
How is the Indian recruitment market for the Finance discipline?
The Indian recruitment market is a challenging yet highly promising environment. The Finance jobseeker market is fairly active and many jobseekers are always exploring opportunities, however they can be somewhat indecisive and often require coaching during transitions. On the client side, the market is saturated with low fees and volume-focused competitors that have reduced client trust in consulting companies because of poor quality, especially at the mid level. During the year, we have seen that clients have been hesitant in closing positions because of the uncertainty in the market and have also been highly focused on the cost of recruiting. This has resulted in a lot of positions taking longer to be filled. The positions that were in high demand during 2013 are in the area of tax and internal audit.
How was the recruitment market activity for the Finance discipline throughout 2013?
Recruitment market activity within Finance has fluctuated during the year. We saw a slowdown in recruitment from August to September 2013, mostly due to the fact that companies were reviewing their budget/headcount for 2014 and postponed all non-critical recruitment. Nevertheless, the Michael Page Finance team has seen an increase in the number of mandates outsourced mainly because of new client development by our teams in Mumbai and Delhi.
What are the expectations for recruitment market activity in India for the Finance discipline in 2014 – the key themes or trends that are emerging?
We expect 2014 to be the next step in the growth of Michael Page Finance. With the world economy growing again, we expect more and more international players coming into the market and looking for a reliable partner to work with for their recruitment needs. We expect that we will be leveraging our growth on our current international client base. In addition, we also see an increase in demand for a more specialised approach of recruitment based on financial profiles, due to the growing complexity of the finance function at the middle and senior level. With 20 specialised consultants in our finance team, we are in a very strong position to benefit from this market trend.
Hot jobs in Finance in 2014:

For 2014, we will see an increase in the demand for professionals who are specialists in the field of taxation, as the focus of the government to increase tax income will force companies to have stronger tax department relationships in place. In addition, we foresee a growing demand for financial controllers, because market sentiment has improved for foreign companies entering and up scaling their business in India. The main drivers for this are the recovering developed economies.

A garlic a day for good health

A garlic a day for good health

A garlic a day for good health
A garlic a day for good health

Add a couple of cloves of garlic to your diet to boost your immunity

Garlic with its antiviral and antibacterial properties helps boost your immunity and keeps you looking fresh and healthy. While in some cases garlic supplements are available and prescribed as a preventive measure for common cold, it's actually very easy to incorporate a few cloves of garlic in our daily meals. Here's how you can consume garlic without having to deal with that awful breadth.

Add it to your soup: Soup itself is a very good decongestant and helps warm up the body. Make your own vegetable or chicken broth soup at home and add garlic to it to enhance the flavour as well as get its antibiotic effect. Here's what you can do:

Bring two cups of water to a simmer over medium-high heat in a small saucepan. Add garlic (grated and made into a paste, for better flavouring), some thyme or oregano seasoning, one tablespoon of olive oil and salt to taste to the water. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes until the broth is fragrant. Add green vegetables (fresh peas, diced carrots, beans, spring onions, chopped capsicum, or other vegetables of your choice) to the broth and simmer uncovered for another five to eight minutes until the vegetables are tender. Taste and adjust salt. Beat one egg in a bowl, and add a little freshly ground pepper to it. Remove a small ladleful of the soup, and whisk it into the egg to temper it. Turn the heat off under the soup, and stir in the egg mixture. The egg should cloud the soup but shouldn't scramble. Add some extra pepper on the top, pour out in a bowl and enjoy.

Make your own garlic drink: The smell of garlic makes it difficult to be consumed raw, but when you use other ingredients with an equally powerful taste, it's easier. Here's a drink you can try:

Take a large saucepan and add three cups of water. Grate five cloves of garlic and add it to the water. Cover the lid and bring it to boil so that the garlic fumes don't escape. Turn off the heat after its boiled, add 10ml honey and the juice of one lemon to the garlic-water and stir well. Strain it into cups and sip it, while inhaling the garlic fumes.

Try garlic vinegar: Desperate times need desperate measure, and if you are dealing with a stubborn cold, you must try this garlic-vinegar recipe which is sure to benefit you instantly.

In a medium sized bowl, add vinegar (at least half the bowl). Mince one large bulb of garlic (at least 10-15 cloves) and add it to the vinegar. Cover it and let it sit for about an hour. The vinegar absorbs all the raw qualities of the garlic, making it a really strong solution. Strain it and drink the solution when you need immediate effects. Otherwise, use it as a salad dressing or in other recipes that use vinegar

Google offering free Chromebooks to Indian schools

Google offering free Chromebooks to Indian schools

Google offering free Chromebooks to Indian schools
Google is expanding its initiative to offer free Chromebook laptops in schools in India with a pilot in four schools in Andhra Pradesh.

HYDERABAD: Google is expanding to India an initiative to popularize the use of its Chromebook laptops in schools, starting with a pilot in four schools in Andhra Pradesh.

The internet search company that makes the world's most popular software for smartphones and tablets will initially make available 25Chromebooks to each school and train the teachers and instructors in the use of the required software applications.

"The school instructors will teach core subjects using applications and software. We believe with interactive learning, the student will understand better and will take interest in the subjects," Ponnala Lakshmaiah, the state's minister for information technology, said.

Chromebooks require an internet connection to use, and most of the data, such as files that users work on, are stored on Google's storage network connected to the internet. Earlier this month, Samsung released a Chromebook model specifically for the Indian market. Schools are among the most popular market segments for the Chromebooks.

Google is running this programme in some 3,000 schools in the US, Singapore and Malaysia, a Google executive with direct knowledge of the plan to expand it to India told ET. The executive requested not to be named as Google was yet to announce the plan.

"Google aims to increase access to information and knowledge for all students, and encourages tools that support effective teaching and learning in the classroom, but we have nothing to announce at this time," a company spokeswoman said in an emailed statement.

The pilot project, in collaboration with Andhra Pradesh department of information technology, will start next month, a senior government official said. It will be launched in three government schools and one private school in Jangaon in Warangal district.
