10 romantic places to see before you die

There is a romantic in all of us. No matter how much we deny we'd still give anything to be in a place breathtakingly beautiful, and even better if we have someone special to share it with.

Of world's most romantic places Paris tops the chart as the city of eternal romance where even sipping champagne at a roadside cafe facing theEiffel Tower holds a special meaning. While places like Paris, Venice, the French Riviera are synonymous with ever-lasting romance, we scoured a few other destinations that spell romance, albeit in an unconventional way. Avignon, for instance, and its picturesque purple fields of lavender, the rolling tea estates of Munnar in Kerala, the lonely jungle walks in Portugal's Madeira Island might appeal to your romantic side.

Valentine's Day or otherwise, the below 10 experiences are an absolute must-do before you die.

An evening in Paris
Paris is magical, and a dream-come-true for diehard romantics. An illuminated Eiffel Tower, the life-giving waters of the Seine, the masterpieces at Louvre, the intricate detailing on every structure lining the boulevards, the saucy Moulin Rouge shows, and an atmospheric dinner at the recently refurbished '58 Tour Eiffel' restaurant on the Eiffel Tower, come together in a dizzying array to give you a different perspective on life, love and eternity.

Avignon, where time stands still...
See Europe's biggest gothic structure, the Pope's Palace in Avignon in Southern France among other architectural gems set against the coastal beauty of the Rhone River. The Monastery of the Val de Benediction with its superior frescoes is of particular importance. Stroll down the cobbled streets of Saint Remy, the village which inspired Van Gogh's masterpiece 'Starry Night'. Walk about in vineyards and savour the finest French wines. Explore the gorgeous lavender fields of Avignon; it opens up a painter's canvas of rolling green valleys, sleepy homesteads interspersed by immense blue lavender fields.

The tranquil Cote d' Azur or 'French Riviera'
The charming port of St. Tropez sees chic Parisians and other international jet set spend a laidback vacation in their private yachts. Stunning coastal scenery mingles with a palpable sense of power, wealth and glamour in Nice, the capital of the French Riviera. It's a quaint world there, only its material offerings are exclusive, rich and one-off. From shopping in chic boutiques, museum-hopping, enjoying the quiet beaches, strolling around the Roman ruins, to eating out at quaint roadside cafes, the French Riviera is an ideal retreat for a much-in-love pair.

An artist's haven and a fashionista's hub, Milan
Home to Da Vinci's 'The Last Supper', and the world's top designer labels, Milan is beguiling and addictive. Do the town on coach or foot, and experience the grandeur of the massive marble Duomo, where every opera singer aspires to perform someday. Look up the oddball art pieces and furniture range at Castello Sforzesco. A walk in the evening while browsing the boutiques of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele arcade and the Corso Venezia is an ideal way to spend time in the Italian fashion capital with your beloved.

Venice, the city of canals on a gondola
Bards, painters and filmmakers for generations have glorified this tranquil Italian canal city in their works. A gondola ride on the Grand Canal through ancient bridges past pretty baroque houses of Venice is a feeling you will always hold close to your heart. It is a fine opportunity to soak up the Venetian way of life, the one thousand year old markets around Ponte di Rialto, and experience an architectural richness that makes up Italy's most romantic city.

Lake Como and the Italian Lake District
Affording dramatic mountain scenery, Lake Como is the serenest of the three Italian lakes. In fact, Europeans love coming here because the city of Como is also the silk capital of Italy, what with silk factory outlets and branded stores strewn across its every nook and cranny. It's a great idea to buy a pretty silk scarf or a printed silk dress for your partner on a trip down its narrow, scenic lanes. From Bellagio, an old-world town in the vicinity, you can take in panoramic views of the Alps and the aqua blue waters of Lake Como. Bellagio is characterised by old villas and luxuriant gardens.

The misty tea estates of Munnar
Not just is it the highest peak of the Western Ghats, the undulating, mist-covered tea estates, and gushing waterfalls, add to the other-worldly beauty of Munnar. Drive through dark, winding roads that look like an enchanted ribbon, and discover around every bend a starkly different view. The clouds hang so low that can reach out and touch them. Lush meadows sprayed with wild flowers, the quiet sound of the gurgling brooks through narrow rocks, the green lake at Echo Point, and the warm and hospitable local folks, make Munnar hauntingly romantic.

Witness a breaking dawn in Udaipur
Lovingly called 'city of lakes' and 'city of dawn', Udaipur's romantic appeal lies in the tranquil waters of Lake Pichola and the white marble Lake Palace at its heart. The city virtually came up on the banks of Lake Pichola after Maharana Udai Singh II discovered it following a prophesy by an ascetic who summoned him to rebuild his empire over Lake Pichola after his defeat in Chittorgarh at the hands of Mughal Emperor, Akbar. Set against the looming Aravalis, Udaipur's string of lakes, the sandstone City Palace on the eastern crest of Lake Pichola, the architectural structures dotting the city, the handicraft bazaars, local cuisine, and an idle pace of life are sure to bring you back for more.

Far away in the floating gardens of Madeira Island
Tossed on the sapphire blue waters of the Atlantic, just off the mainland of Portugal, the Madeira Island resembles a gigantic floating garden. Its capital city Funchal receives honeymooners from Europe who find glory in its fine wines, mild climate, bird songs, drunk-red rhododendron blossoms, forests of pine, terraced fields, secret gorges, and the glimmering blue Atlantic visible from every clearing in the jungle. Explore on foot a tired countryside sprawled on the crater of an extinct volcano which still resorts to wicker craft for a living. Follow a levada - an irrigational canal that winds through the jungles - and discover sights of immense natural beauty.

A pint of Guinness in Dublin
Head straight to the 250-year-old brewery, the Guinness Storehouse in Ireland's capital city and find out all there is to know about the world's most celebrated beer. From ground floor to the sky bar 'Gravity' on the seventh floor, the storehouse is an experience unlike any other. From taking you through the fine process of beer making to giving you a taste of their best brews, you can literally spend an entire day among great many varieties of beer. Take your date to Gravity in the evening and enjoy a few mugs of frosty beer with appetisers while looking over a brilliantly litDublin city. The haunting romanticism of the Irish Kilkenny and Malahide castles too are worth experiencing. Do it on a day trip from Dublin

After Amazon, Flipkart too offers same-day delivery

After Amazon, Flipkart too offers same-day delivery

After Amazon, Flipkart too offers same-day delivery
Flipkart requires consumers to place orders by 6pm and levies an additional cost of Rs 90 per item for delivery.

NEW DELHI: Following in the footsteps of its rival Amazon, Indian e-commerce websiteFlipkart has also launched single day guaranteed delivery, named 'In-a-day Guarantee.' The service will allow consumers in select cities to get goods ordered from Flipkart delivered the next day.

'In-a-day Guarantee' is currently available in seven cities, namely Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Noida and Pune. But it requires consumers to place orders by 6pm. Flipkart also levies an additional cost of Rs 90 per item for delivery under the service. Users can opt to avail the service at the time of making payments (check out). Orders placed after 6pm will be delivered the day after, as per the company.

Speaking about the launch, Ravi Vora, Flipkart's senior vice-president marketing, said, "We have had a lot of customers requesting urgent deliveries, for reasons ranging from occasion-led gifts to pre-travel shopping. But given the large volumes that we handle, it wasn't feasible to address them on a case-to-case basis. We have now built the capability into our supply-chain and can now offer it as a guaranteed feature. This value-added service is available to consumers who need it - making online shopping a viable option even for last-minute purchases. We hope this will further accelerate the adoption of e-commerce in the country."

It is worth noting that the 'In-a-day Delivery' service is only available with orders placed with the seller WS Retail. Flipkart is a multi-seller platform and a number of sellers offer products for sale.

The company said the service is available for most products. If Flipkart fails to deliver a product within the promised timeframe, it offers a refund of the Rs 90 charge per item levied as part of the 'In-a-day Guarantee' service through a credit in the consumer's Flipkart Wallet, for later use. In case of cash on delivery orders, the consumer needs to pay the full amount including the next-day -delivery charge even if the product is delivered late, as the refund is credited only through the wallet.

Last week, Amazon had also started offering same-day delivery in select cities, charging an additional sum of Rs.99 for the service

Twitter adds photo sharing to direct messages
Updated mobile software rolled out by Twitter lets smartphone users send pictures in direct, personal messages seen only by recipients instead of being shared publicly.
SAN FRANCISCO: Updated mobile software rolled out by Twitter lets smartphone users send pictures in direct, personal messages seen only by recipients instead of being shared publicly on the social network.

"For the first time, you can share and view photos via direct message on your mobile phone," Jeremy Gordon, the company's senior director of product engineering, wrote in a post on the Twitter blog.

"We've also introduced a new tab in the navigation bar that makes it easy to access direct messages -- they're just one tap away from wherever you are on Twitter."

The Instagram-style feature is in the latest Twitter applications tailored for Apple or Android smartphones, according to Gordon.

Twitter users now also have the option to "swipe" from their home screen timelines to a "discover" section to explore trends or popular 'tweets.'

"There are a bunch of other great updates in this release," Gordon said.

LG unveils curved smartphone, TV in India

LG unveils curved smartphone, TV in India

LG unveils curved smartphone, TV in India
South Korean electronics maker LG has launched its curved screen smartphone G Flex in India.

NEW DELHI: South Korean electronics makerLG has launched its curved screen smartphone G Flex and OLED TV in India. The curved display resolves the problem of visual distortion and detail loss, says the manufacturer.
Though the G Flex made its debut in October, its sales had been restricted to South Korea only. It is the second smartphone in the world to have a curved screen, next only to Samsung Galaxy Round. This handset has a 6-inch flexible OLED screen that is curved along the horizontal axis. The phone's 3,500mAh battery is also curved.
Though the company didn't reveal G Flex's exact pricing, Amit Gujral, market head, LG India, revealed that the device will be priced between Rs60,000-65,000. It will hit the stores in February 2014.
Though the screen is flexible by itself, the glass casing does not allow it to be bent at will. However, the phone still bends if sufficient pressure is applied on it as the glass film is thin enough to be bent slightly.

The G Flex's curved screen provides the same viewing experience from 1 feet away that a 55-inch HDTV does from 10 feet, LG claims.

Apart from the curved display, this phone has another unique feature - a self-healing back. LG has used a self-healing technology on the phone's back, which allows it to heal small scruffs and scratches on the rear panel within 5 minutes. This self-healing is due to a molecular substructure coating on top of the phone's back panel and depends a lot on the room temperature; hotter the room, faster the healing. However, deep cuts that pierce through the coating will not be healed.

Key specs of LG G Flex include a 720 display, 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. Just like LG G2, the new G Flex has the power key and volume buttons on the back, positioned below a 13MP camera with LED flash.

The LG 55EA9800 curved TV has a 55-inch OLED screen and thickness of just 4.3mm. Instead of the RGB (red, green and blue) pixels that standard televisions have, this TV features four pixels - red, green, blue and white. It also comes with LG's Clear Speakers, which matches the audio quality of movie theatres. The manufacturer also offers Magic Remote, which has features like Gesture, Pointing, Wheel, Voice and Universal Control.

LG's curved TV is now available in stores at Rs 9,99,000.

It is rumoured that the successor of LG G Flex, expected to hit the market next year, will have a screen that will bend at 90-degree angle with ease. Samsung has also revealed that it will launch its first phone with a bendable screen next year.

India eye moment of inspiration against South Africa

India eye moment of inspiration against South Africa

India eye moment of inspiration against South Africa
South Africa have already made it clear that they will not yield an inch even though they already have the series wrapped up. The Proteas are clearly aiming for a 3-0 whitewash.

PRETORIA: It's been more than 10 years sinceSachin Tendulkar played a magical knock of 98 against Pakistan in Centurion. India were in a tight corner till then in the 2003 World Cup and that knock had helped the Men in Blue to turn the corner and they went on to make the final.

India are in a somewhat similar position now, reeling under South Africa's pace onslaught. After suffering two humiliating defeats, they have their back to the wall and desperately need someone to come up with an inspirational effort in the third and final ODI to boost the morale of the side before the two Test matches.

There is neither a dearth of talent in the Indian line-up, nor there is a paucity of match-winners but given the current predicament of MS Dhoni's young brigade, it is hard to see anyone rising to the occasion like Sachin had done against Pakistan. No one has an idea what kind of a pitch will be on offer as the ground remained under cover all day. With rains lashing Pretoria on Tuesday, players were forced to practice at the indoor facility.

The forecast is that it might clear up on Wednesday, but the umpires may still find it difficult to pack in a full 50-overs game. "Centurion has excellent drainage and it's a day-nighter...So let's keep our fingers crossed," a local old-timer said.

South Africa have already made it clear that they will not yield an inch even though they already have the series wrapped up. The Proteas are clearly aiming for a 3-0 whitewash.

"India are the No. 1 ODI side in the world and look where we are probably No. 5. A whitewash of the top side would be great for our cricket," South African captain AB de Villiers had said after winning the Durban contest with ease.

But again, It is not just about the whitewash. The South Africans are keen to hold a psychological edge over the Indians before they get into the Test series.

The unveiling of the trophy for the two-Test series took place in Pietermaritzburg on Monday and South Africa's new coach Russell Domingo spelled out his team's agenda.

"Indian players always had an issue against the pace and bounce in South Africa...Right at the beginning of the series, our plan was to put doubts in their minds ahead of the Tests. We have been able to do that and it's going to continue," Domingo said.

The Indians are trying desperately to negate this theory, but there is no denying the fact that the Men in Blue look somewhat shell-shocked after suffering rare consecutive ODI losses - each by a big margin.

The longer this unease persists in the Indian camp, the higher will the chances of suffering a similar debacle in the Test series. Rohit Sharma, India's ODI opener who is being tipped to replace Tendulkar at No. 4 in Test matches, didn't tire of emphasizing the importance of Tuesday's dead rubber.

"Yes, the message has to go through to the South Africans that we are ready for a fight...The series might be lost but we are treating this game with utmost seriousness," Rohit said
.

Microsoft's Android royalty earnings under threat due to Linus Torvalds email

Microsoft's Android royalty earnings under threat due to Linus Torvalds email

Microsoft-Steve-Ballmer-Android-Royalties-FAT-Patent.jpg

Microsoft's been enjoying some reportedly handsome royalty payments from Android device manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Acer and HTC, based on its patents. So far however, Google (through its Motorola Mobility subsidiary) has avoided paying a dime to Microsoft. A very recent ruling however, may just turn the tide back in Google's favour.

As noted by intellectual property expert Florian Mueller, a German court (the Federal Patent Court of Germany, BPatG) on Thursday said that elements distinguishing Microsoft's 'common name space for long and short filenames' FAT patent from prior art (which includes a Linus Torvalds email) did not satisfy the 'technicity' requirement under European patent law.

Mueller added that Microsoft will probably appeal this decision at the country's highest court, the Federal Court of Justice, BGH. According to Forbes' Tim Worstall, if upheld, the ruling has implications that are wider in reach than German jurisdiction, becoming applicable across the European Union. With the current unspoken aim to try and normalise patent rulings between Europe and the US, it could very well set the trend across the Atlantic as well.

This would mean that a large part of Microsoft's rather convenient royalty earnings from Android, at least those derived from the FAT patent, will cease to flow in to the Redmond giant's coffers - something Microsoft will obviously try to contest. According to an earlier report by analyst firm Nomura, Microsoft was estimated to be earning a cool $2 billion a year from Android royalty payments.

Microsoft officially doesn't break up the amount it receives in royalty payments in its records, but Worstall estimates based on the volume of sales of Android devices, it receives roughly the same amount in Android royalties as it does for its Windows Phone licences, if not more.

Nokia owes Rs. 21,153 crores as total tax liability: IT department

Nokia owes Rs. 21,153 crores as total tax liability: IT department

nokia_635.jpg

The Income Tax department has informed the Delhi High Court that Nokia India and Nokia Corporation owe it Rs. 21,153 crores as total tax liability (existing and anticipated), including penalty during a seven-year period from 2006-2013.
The amount payable by Nokia has been arrived at by the IT department on the basis that the mobile manufacturing firm does not discharge its TDS liability on royalty payments and is not entitled to any deduction under tax laws for operating from a special economic zone (SEZ).
The submission has been made by the IT department in its reply to Nokia's plea for unfreezing of its assets in India prior to its USD 7.2 billion deal with Microsoft.
In case TDS liability is paid and the deduction under tax laws for operating from a SEZ is available to Nokia, then its total tax liability (existing and anticipated), including penalty would be Rs. 14,200 crores.
Meanwhile, a bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna and Sanjeev Sachdeva adjourned the hearing on Nokia's plea to tomorrow when the company may have to answer the court's queries regarding the total investment made by it in India, dividend paid by it, quantum of purchases of raw materials, whether Nokia Corporation has been filing returns here, what will happen to Nokia Corp post-Microsoft deal, etc.
Nokia's offer to pay a minimum of Rs. 2,250 crore, which could increase depending upon the outcome of its deal with Microsoft, was recently turned down by the IT department during the proceedings before the high court.
During an earlier hearing, the IT department had informed the high court that Nokia India's tax liability is over Rs. 6,500 crore.
Nokia had made the offer seeking to get its assets here, including its mobile manufacturing unit in Chennai, unfrozen.
It has sought lifting of the stay on transfer of its assets in India saying the high court's injunction will jeopardise the sale of its Indian arm to Microsoft under the global deal.

On the last date of hearing, the court had questioned Nokia India's intention behind sending Rs. 3,500 crore to its parent company as dividend of 18 years and asked why the amount should not be brought back here.
Nokia had told the court that the amount was repatriated as dividend of 18 years and that in a slump sale like this (Nokia-Microsoft deal) cash has to be removed.
It had told the high court that its assets in India have "value in use but not value in sale" and the only person who may use it is Microsoft.
"Either they will buy our plant or they will source phones from elsewhere. If Microsoft gets cheaper phones in another country, it will go there," the company had told the court.
"Microsoft may use us or they may not. We have an outer window of 12 months," it had said
Nokia had said if the sale of its Indian unit in Chennai does not happen, the company will wind up its operations here over a period of 12 months and the assets here will have little value.
In its plea, Nokia has said it intends to sell its assets in the country as part of the sale of its entire global mobile phone manufacturing business to software giant Microsoft but without the vacation of stay on sale of its assets, the deal is not possible.
The firm has also said Microsoft is interested in purchasing Nokia India's assets only if relevant approvals have been obtained from the appropriate authorities.
The issue relates to the IT department's Rs. 2,080 crores tax demand notice to the Finnish mobile firm.
The alleged tax evasion pertains to royalty payment made against supply of software by its parent company, which attracts a 10 percent tax deduction under the Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) category.

Qualcomm has announced its new 64-bit mobile chipset, the Snapdragon 410, which is targeted at entry-level smartphones. As per Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 410 processor can be expected to go under sampling in the first half of 2014 and will likely be in commercial devices by the second half of 2014.
The latest Snapdragon 410 processors are manufactured using 28nm process technology and feature processors that are 64-bit capable along with the Adreno 306 GPU, full-HD video playback and supports for up to a 13-megapixel camera.
The company notes in a press release, "The delivery of faster connections is important to the growth and adoption of smartphones in emerging regions, and Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets are poised to address the needs of consumers as 4G LTE begins to ramp in China."
Further, the Snapdragon 410 chipsets feature integrated 4G LTE and also support 3G connectivity, apart from support modes for dual-SIM or even triple SIM.
Other features of the Snapdragon 410 chipsets include integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM, NFC functionality, and support for all major navigation constellations (GPS, GLONASS, and China's new BeiDou). The Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset supports Android, Windows Phone and Firefox operating systems.
Commenting on the announcement Jeff Lorbeck, senior vice president and chief operating officer, Qualcomm Technologies, China said, "We are excited to bring 4G LTE to highly affordable smartphones at a sub-$150 price point with the introduction of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor. The Snapdragon 410 chipset will also be the first of many 64-bit capable processors as Qualcomm Technologies helps lead the transition of the mobile ecosystem to 64-bit processing."
Notably, Apple seems to have started the trend towards 64-bit processors in mobile devices, with the iPhone 5s and its custom Apple A7 SoC. Samsung followed suit after, with an announcement that it's next-generation flagship would also sport a 64-bit processor.
Recently, Qualcomm unveiled its next generation of Snapdragon 800 tier mobile processors, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805.
The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset features a Krait 450 quad-core CPU, which the company claims is the first mobile CPU to run at speeds of up to 2.5GHz per core. The Snapdragon 805 also features the Adreno 420 GPU, which according to Qualcomm delivers 40 percent more graphics processing power than the GPU on the Snapdragon 800.

Facebook unveils plans for an artificial intelligence lab in partnership with NYU

Facebook unveils plans for an artificial intelligence lab in partnership with NYU

facebook-ipo-google.jpg

Facebook unveiled plans Monday on a partnership with New York University for a new center for artificial intelligence, aimed at harnessing the huge social network's massive trove of data. The California-based tech giant named professor Yann LeCun of NYU's Center for Data Science to head up the project.
"As one of the most respected thinkers in this field, Yann has done groundbreaking research in deep learning and computer vision," said Mike Schroepfer, Facebook's chief technology officer. "We're thrilled to welcome him to Facebook."
Facebook, the world's biggest social network with more than a billion members, is building the team across three locations New York, London and its headquarters in Menlo Park, California.
The lab will work on "machine learning," a branch of artificial intelligence that involves computers "learning" to extract knowledge from giant data sets.
LeCun, a French-born mathematician and computer scientist, said in a blog post that he was pleased to head up the project with "the ambitious, long-term goal of bringing about major advances in artificial intelligence."
"I am thrilled to announce that I have accepted the position of director of this new lab," LeCun wrote. "I will remain a professor at New York University on a part-time basis, and will maintain research and teaching activities at NYU."
Facebook chief and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg spoke of the plans during a call in October to discuss the company's quarterly earnings.
Zuckerberg said a working group was formed in September "to do world-class artificial intelligence research using all of the knowledge that people have shared on Facebook."
"The goal here is to use new approaches in AI to help make sense of all the content that people share so we can generate new insights about the world to answer people's questions," Zuckerberg said at the time.
He added that one of the goals was "to build services that are much more natural to interact with and can help solve many more problems than any existing technology today."
LeCun is a professor at NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and is the founding director of the university's Center for Data Science.
He is known for creating an early version of a pattern-recognition algorithm which mimics, in part, the visual cortex of animals and humans.
The algorithm helped allow AT&T's Bell Labs to deploy a check-reading system that by the late 1990s was reading about 20 percent of all the checks written in the US, according to NYU.
LeCun's recent research projects include the application of "deep learning" methods for visual scene understanding and navigation autonomous ground robots, driverless cars, and small flying robots, as well as speech recognition, and applications in biology and medicine.

NSA, GCHQ spying on online gaming, virtual worlds: Report

American and British intelligence operations have been spying on gamers across the world, media outlets reported, saying that the world's most powerful espionage agencies sent undercover agents into virtual universes to monitor activity in online fantasy games such as "World of Warcraft."Stories carried Monday by The New York Times, the Guardian, and ProPublica said U.S. and U.K. spies have spent years trawling online games for terrorists or informants. The stories, based on documents leaked by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, offer an unusual take on America's world-spanning surveillance campaign, suggesting that even the fantasy worlds popular with children, teens, and escapists of all ages aren't beyond the attention of the NSA and its British counterpart, GCHQ.
Virtual universes like "World of Warcraft" can be massively popular, drawing in millions of players who log months' worth of real-world time competing with other players for online glory, virtual treasure, and magical loot. At its height, "World of Warcraft" boasted some 12 million paying subscribers, more than the population of Greece. Other virtual worlds, like Linden Labs' "Second Life" or the various games hosted by Microsoft's Xbox - home to the popular science fiction-themed shoot-em-up "Halo" - host millions more.
Spy agencies have long worried that such games serve as a good cover for terrorists or other evildoers who could use in-game messaging systems to swap information. In one of the documents cited Monday by media outlets, the NSA warned that the games could give intelligence targets a place to "hide in plain sight."
Linden Labs and Microsoft Inc. did not immediately return messages seeking comment. In a statement, Blizzard Entertainment said that it is "unaware of any surveillance taking place. If it was, it would have been done without our knowledge or permission."
Microsoft issued a similar statement, saying it is "not aware of any surveillance activity. If it has occurred as reported, it certainly wasn't done with our consent."
The 82-page-document, published on The New York Times' website, also noted that opponents could use video games to recruit other users or carry out virtual weapons training - pointing to the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers as examples of terrorists who had used flight simulation software to hone their skills.
Important details - such as how the agencies secured access to gamers' data, how many players' information was compromised, or whether Americans were swept up in the spying - were not clear, the Times and ProPublica said, but the reports point to a determined effort to infiltrate a world many people associate with adolescents and shut-ins.
At the request of GCHQ, the NSA began extracting "World of Warcraft" data from its global intelligence haul, trying to tie specific accounts and characters to Islamic extremism and arms dealing efforts, the Guardian reported. Intelligence on the fantasy world could eventually translate to real-world espionage success, one of the documents suggested, noting that "World of Warcraft" subscribers included "telecom engineers, embassy drivers, scientists, the military and other intelligence agencies."
"World of Warcraft" wasn't the only target. Another memo noted that GCHQ had "successfully been able to get the discussions between different game players on Xbox Live." Meanwhile, so many U.S. spies were roaming around "Second Life" that a special "deconfliction" unit was set up to prevent them from stepping on each other's toes.
Blizzard Entertainment is part of Santa Monica, Calif.-based Activision Blizzard Inc.
