Top 10 changes that Microsoft Windows 8.1 will bring

After several rumours hinting at the new features that Microsoft's Windows 8.1 would bring, the Redmond giant has officially announced some of them through a new blog post taking a "first look."According to Microsoft, Windows 8.1 will not just respond to customer feedback, will add new features and functionality to improve the touch experience and the operating system's mobile computing potential.
"The Windows 8.1 update will deliver improvements and enhancements in key areas like personalization, search, the built-in apps, Windows Store experience, and cloud connectivity," the company said.
1. New Start tip
The biggest change that the update brings is the Windows Logo at the left hand corner in place of the Start screen "tip" that comes up when one hovers the mouse pointer in Windows 8. The Windows Logo is more recognisable according to Microsoft. It also gives the ability to users to choose between booting to the desktop directly. At the moment, only the Start screen shows up when one boots the PC.
2. Desktop wallpapers for Start screen
Microsoft will now allow users to turn their PCs or tablets into a photo frame when it's locked. Users can choose to show a slideshow of pictures stored locally in their devices or in the cloud via SkyDrive. It will also add the ability to take pictures from the lock screen via the device's camera directly from the lock screen.
In addition to this, the update will bring more colours and backgrounds including animated ones for the Windows Start screen and will even allow users to set their desktop background as their Start screen background. As reported previously, the Windows 8.1 Start screen would features new tile sizes including a new large and new small size.
3. Updated Search
According to Microsoft, Windows 8.1's Search charm will offer global search results powered by Bing in "a rich, simple-to-read, aggregated view of many content sources to provide the best "answer" for the user's query." Search will also offer "Quick actions" that include actions users would like to take, for example, play songs or videos. Results from local files, apps, and settings would be accessible in the same was as they are on Windows 8.
4. App Updates
Microsoft will be updating native apps to offer new functionality. The company mentions that the Pictures app will offer the ability to edit pictures and the Music app has been completely redesigned to offer a better experience and adds that it will also be introducing new apps shortly.
5. New multitasking experience
Following the Windows 8.1 update, users will be able to snap apps in variable sizes, as reported earlier. It will allow users to run three apps simultaneously on one screen and run different Modern UI/ Metro apps on different displays if connected, while keeping the Start screen on one display. Users will also be able to snap multiple windows of the same application.
6. Updated Store
Microsoft is also revamping the Windows Store to show more information with detailed lists of top free apps, new releases, and picks on the homepage.
7. SkyDrive improvements
Windows 8.1 will allow users to save files directly to SkyDrive and will offer an updated SkyDrive app that allows offline access to files.
8. Better PC Settings menu
Another issue that a lot of users faced with Windows 8 was that a lot of system settings were not available in the PC settings and they had to still go to the Control Panel on the desktop to access them.
Users will now be able to change their display resolution, set power options, see the make and model of their PC, change the product key, run Windows Update, and even join a domain directly from PC Settings.
9. New Internet Explorer
The Windows 8.1 update will bring a new version of the Internet Explorer browser. Internet Explorer 11 would be built for touch and would offer faster page load times in addition to several other new personalisation features.
10. Better handling of tiles
Users will be able to group and rearrange tiles more conveniently. They'll now be able to select multiple apps all at once, resize them, uninstall them, or rearrange them on the Start screen. Windows 8.1 will require users to press and hold or right click to move tiles around to prevent accidental movement of tiles. The update also brings the ability to filter apps by name, date installed, most used, or by category.

Chinese couple sells daughter, buys iPhone: Report

A young Chinese couple are facing criminal punishment for "selling" their infant daughter and using the proceeds to buy an Apple iPhone, state media said Friday.Shanghai prosecutors have brought a case against them for human trafficking after they illegally put their third child up for adoption online and accepted money for the baby, the Liberation Daily reported.
Investigators found the mother, whose full name was not given, used the money to buy an iPhone, high-end sports shoes and other goods, it said.
Apple's products are wildly popular in China, where a teenager sold his kidney and used the funds to buy an iPhone and iPad in an incident widely reported last year.
But the couple told police that they wanted the girl to have a better upbringing than they could afford, since they already had two children.
"Giving away the child was not for obtaining benefits, but giving the child better guarantees," one said.
Some Chinese, especially in rural areas, have a traditional preference for sons though reports did not say if the child's gender was also a factor in the case.
Online commentary condemned the couple, though some used black humour to describe modern Chinese society and the quest for wealth.
"So cold-blooded! These people do not deserve the right to be parents!" said Wangzhan1969 in a microblog posting.
"This is good business no capital, huge profit and no need to sell kidneys," said another posting.
An official of the prosecutor's office handling the case expressed worry over "sensationalism" surrounding the affair but declined to comment further to AFP.
Shanghai police could not be reached for comment.
Reports did not give the amount the couple received for the child, but their online postings asked for 30,000 yuan and 50,000 yuan ($4,900 and $8,200).
Apple last month launched the iPhone 5s (Review I Pictures), including a gold-coloured model, and the more budget-conscious iPhone 5c (Review) in China.

Nokia Lumia 1020 review

The Lumia 1020 is the spiritual successor to Nokia's first phone with a 41-megapixel camera sensor, the Nokia 808 PureView. While the 808 won rave reviews for its camera, the fact that it ran the dated Symbian operating system on underpowered hardware had many wondering - "What if this phone (rather, this camera) ran Windows Phone?" In that respect, the Nokia Lumia 1020 is the realisation of a dream that many have harboured since using the 808.
Sadly, many dreams shatter on their first contact with reality. Is the Lumia 1020 one of those dreams or does this story have a happy ending, let's find out.
Build/ Design
Nokia Lumia 1020 inherits characteristics of other members of the Lumia family, with a polycarbonate body that looks and feels premium. The layout of buttons and other ports is pretty standard as well, with the volume controls, power and dedicated camera buttons on the right edge. The top edge has the headphones port and the micro-SIM slot, while the bottom has the Micro-USB port, loudspeaker and a lanyard slot. The three standard Windows Phone buttons lie below the display and the Search button is as useless as ever, pointing to Bing instead of universal search, a long-standing gripe of ours with Windows Phone devices.
The back of the Lumia 1020 looks different from its Lumia cousins, thanks largely to the 41-megapixel camera module that sticks out of the back. However, the bulge is not as big a problem with the 1020 as it was with the Nokia 808 PureView. The 808 was not the easiest phone to carry around, measuring 13.95mm at its thinnest and 17.95mm thick at the camera module. The Lumia 1020, however, is just 10.40mm at its thickest (you guessed it, the camera module), and the bulge as compared to the rest of the body is not as pronounced as the one in the 808. However, the phone is unable to lie flat on its back; instead it rests at an angle that makes it easier to glance the screen if you are looking from front, an unintended benefit. The phone weighs 158 grams, but doesn't feel too heavy.
The Lumia 1020 is available in Black and White colour options, in addition to the Yellow that we received as our review unit.
Display
The Nokia Lumia 1020 comes with a 4.5-inch (768x1280 pixel) ClearBlack AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and a pixel density of 334 pixels per inch. While the resolution and pixel density might be dwarfed on paper when compared to the likes of HTC One, in real world usage, most are unlikely to notice a difference. The display on the 1020 is bright and the colour reproduction closer to the real world when compared with most other AMOLED displays, similar to what we noted in our Nokia Lumia 925 review.
Nokia claims that its ClearBlack technology ensures that users see truer blacks, which in turn enhances the contrast of the display, thanks mainly to reduced reflections on the screen. The result is a screen that is easy to use, even in bright sunlight.
The screen comes with Nokia's super sensitive touch technology which means that the touchscreen can be operated even while wearing gloves or by using a pen as a stylus.
Camera
Needless to say, the highlight of the Nokia Lumia 1020 is its 41-megapixel camera, so we'll be focusing most of our energy on this section. While the sensor inside the Lumia 1020 is 41-megapixel, the pictures it clicks are either 38-megapixel or 34-megapixel, depending upon if you are clicking pictures in 4:3 mode or 16:9, similar to what we saw in the Nokia 808 PureView. If you are curious why this is the case, refer to our Nokia 808 review for a detailed explanation.
Nokia Lumia 1020 packs in a six-element lens array and a BSI (Back Side Illuminated) sensor, a shift from the five-element lens array and FSI (Front Side Illuminated) sensor found in the 808. It also comes with a wider f/2.2 aperture, compared to the f/2.4 in the 808. Another significant improvement in the 1020 is the addition of Optical Image Stabilisation that has been found to be working really well on the likes of Nokia Lumia 925.
While Nokia has worked hard to improve the hardware behind the camera, the software side seems to have regressed a bit. The default camera app on the Lumia 1020 is Nokia Pro Cam that seems to be lacking a few options found in the year-old Nokia. With the 808 you could choose to simultaneously click photographs in 2-megapixel, 3-megapixel, 5-megapixel or 8-megapixel effective resolutions, in addition to 34-megapixel or 38-megapixel full blown images. With the 1020, however, you are limited to a 5-megapixel image in addition to the 34-megapixel (16:9 mode) and 38-megapixel (4:3 mode) full-sized image.
Further, you get to see only the 5-megapixel version of your images while browsing the gallery, and the photos that get automatically uploaded to SkyDrive (should you chose to do so) are 5-megapixel. While it's understandable that Nokia doesn't offer the option of uploading full-resolution images over cellular data, an option to have these photos saved to SkyDrive over Wi-Fi could've been provided as a workaround. In fact, the only way to even see the full-resolution images on the phone is to open them for editing within the app. Even then, you have to crop the image to a smaller size to do anything meaningful with it, like sharing. Alternatively, you can connect the phone to a PC, when you'll get to see that every photo clicked using Nokia Pro Cam in the dual 5-megapixel and 34-/38-megapixel mode, actually has two images corresponding with it.
Having said that, Nokia Pro Cam offers plenty of control to experienced users letting them adjust the exposure, shutter speed, ISO, white balance and, of course, focus as per their needs. This can be done using controls at the top right (while holding the phone in landscape mode) of the screen or by dragging the on-screen click button to the left to reveal a grid of circular lines. The app also gives a live preview of how the resultant image would look when you, say, adjust the white balance. The app also offers options for shutter delay and exposure bracketing, which can be used for creating manual HDR images.
Coming back to the in-app editor that we touched upon briefly, it lets you open full-resolution images and zoom in and out to get exactly what you were looking for. This works pretty well and is a good way of discovering details that perhaps weren't even visible to the naked eye while clicking the photograph. As While cropping the image, called reframing, you even have the option to change its aspect ration to one of 3:2, 1:1, 4:3 or 16:9. This is 'lossless zoom' as Nokia intended.
Perhaps the biggest downside of the Nokia Pro Camera app is the 3-4 seconds time that it takes to save a photo. We initially believed it was down to the fact that the app is saving high resolution photos in addition to the 5-megapixel shots, but even switching to 5-megapixel mode only made the process only marginally faster. It seems all that oversampling involved is taking its toll on the phone, leading to the lag. Add to this the fact that the app takes around 2-3 seconds to be ready to click a photo when launched, and it means that if you are looking to capture a moment in a hurry, you are better off sticking to the native Windows Phone Camera app, which is must faster to load and does not lag while capturing either. Once we realised this, we mapped our hardware camera button to open the native Camera app and left Nokia Pro Camera on our home screen. This made our journey from the lock screen to capturing much faster.
Nokia Pro Cam is one of the many camera apps (or lenses as they are called in Windows Phone) installed on the Lumia 1020 and that can be a little confusing for users. You can switch to any of these apps by clicking the switch lens button on the bottom right of the screen, but remember that only the Nokia Pro Cam can take 34-/38-megapixel pictures. The other lenses (apps) that the Lumia 1020 ships with are Bing Vision, Camera360, the default Windows Phone Camera, Nokia Cinemagraph, Nokia Smart Cam, Panorama and Vyclone.
Nokia Smart Cam clicks a series of photos in burst mode and then recommends the best photo(s). It even lets you mix and match elements from different shots to come up with the perfect shot. Vyclone is a video editing tool, Cinemagraph lets you create small animations from your images, while Camera360 lets you apply various effects to your photos and share them on various social networks. As we noted in our Lumia 720 review, Panorama lens is perhaps the worst way to create panoramic pictures we've come across in recent times and, sadly, nothing's changed on that front.
If, like most smartphone users, you click photos in full-auto mode, trusting the phone to take the best decisions for you in terms of settings, then you'll find that the pictures clicked by the Lumia 1020 are a bit of a hit and miss. When the PureView gods are smiling on you and everything falls into place, the resultant images are crisp and have plenty of detail. However, on several occasions we found the images clicked by the phone to lack detail, when compared to ones clicked by the iPhone 5s and even the year-old iPhone 5.
Having said that, if you feel right at home adjusting the likes of exposure settings and white balance before hitting that camera button, you'll find the Lumia 1020 to be a delight. Images clicked in manual mode turn out as good, if not better than any other smartphone out there.
Low-light photography is pretty good as well, and we dare say more to our taste than the likes of Lumia 925 that have a way of capturing stuff that even human eye can't see. Call us crazy, but we find that a little unnerving. While we are on the subject, though we have a strict no-flash policy while capturing photos, we realise that most people never change away from the Auto mode, and thus put the flash to good use. There's good news on that front as the Xenon flash on the Lumia 1020 is perhaps the best we've come across date. The flash lights up the subjects in an even and powerful fashion, minus the glare that is associated with a typical flash.
Another thing that the Lumia 1020 has going in its favour is the large field of view compared to most other phones. This means that the phone is able to capture an image that is wider as well as taller than most smartphones.
The Lumia 1020 is capable of recording full-HD (1920 x 1080) videos at 30 frames per second. The quality of videos is excellent, with Nokia's Rich Recording technology earning its money with an ability to capture crisp audio even in noisy outdoor conditions.
The front camera can capture 720p video and is as capable front shooter as we've come across in a smartphone.
Software
Nokia Lumia 1020 comes with the Windows Phone 8 Amber update and the overall software experience is no different from its siblings. Nokia bundles many of its own apps to enhance the core Windows Phone functionality, and we've documented our fondness for the Drive app before, which we believe is a worthy competitor to Google Maps. For a detailed look at the Amber update and the new features/ apps that it brings, please refer to our Lumia 625 review.
The most notable additions in the 1020 to the apps that are available in other Lumia smartphone apps are the imaging-related apps that we've covered in the Camera section above.
Overall, the Amber update doesn't do anything to address many of our complaints related to Windows Phone like the lack of a notification centre or the fact that platform is still not a priority for developers, as shown by the absence of apps like Instagram. Even popular apps like Facebook that have a presence on Windows Phone lack features compared to their iOS or Android counterparts.
Performance/ Battery Life
Windows Phone 8-based smartphone rarely have performance issues, and the Lumia 1020 is no exception. It is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor alongside 2GB RAM that handles everything you throw at it pretty smoothly, other than the lags in the Nokia Pro Cam we talked about earlier - whether beefed up hardware would've minimised the delay or if that's entirely a software issue, is something Nokia would know best.
Browsing is good, and the web pages render quickly, but yet again we run into Windows Phone 8 limitations like the fact we can't have more than 6 tabs open at the same time. On a machine with plenty of RAM, that seems artificially crippling. All games and apps we tried run smoothly, but then there are no Infinity Blade-equivalents on Windows Phone to push the hardware to its limit, so other than a few games that require a certain amount of RAM to run, the experience on a phone like the 1020 is not very much different from its entry-level Windows Phone siblings.
The Lumia 1020 comes with 32GB of non-expandable storage, with 29.12GB available for the end user. While that seems like plenty of storage, on a phone that captures large-sized images, an option to have expandable storage would've been nice. In case you are wondering, the 1020 comes with FM radio support, which can be utilised thanks to the pre-installed Amber Update.
For most users, the Nokia Lumia 1020 would easily last a day on a single charge, even if connected to a 3G network throughout. However, if you go on a clicking spree during the day, you will find yourself reaching for the charger quicker than you may think.
Verdict
Nokia Lumia 1020 is priced at Rs. 49,999 which makes it slightly more expensive than the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and considerably pricier than other flagship devices like the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, Sony Xperia Z1 and Sony Xperia Z Ultra. Nokia can thank Apple for small mercies, which announced a Rs. 53,500 price tag for the iPhone 5c earlier this week, making the Lumia 1020 the second-most expensive smartphone available right now.
It is fair to say, that as far as the overall experience is concerned, the Lumia 1020 is inferior to all other smartphones mentioned above. If you are willing to spend Rs. 50,000 on a smartphone, you don't need to look beyond the iPhone 5s, which is superior to the Lumia 1020 in all respects, and as we noted in our Camera section, perhaps a better everyday camera for most users, despite 1020's obviously superior imagining capabilities that need an experienced hand to make the best use.
We've documented shortcomings of Windows Phone earlier, and the Lumia 1020 inherits all of them, with the OS only now getting ready to support full-HD screens and other top of the line specs that have been found in Android phones for a while. You can argue that the iPhone 5s doesn't compete on specs either, but the app ecosystem and overall experience on iOS is unrivalled. So if Windows Phone doesn't compete on hardware, the ecosystem, and, with the 1020, not even the price, it's hard to make a strong case for it.
Yes, shutterbugs will love the Lumia 1020 camera, but at the price tag one has to wonder if they are perhaps better off buying a point-and-shoot camera, which are getting smaller, easier to carry bodies and bigger sensors, and a mid-level smartphone. If you want one that runs Windows Phone, pick the Nokia Lumia 720, which is still our favourite Windows Phone running device, or the Nokia Lumia 920 which is now reportedly available at heavy discounts compared to its launch price.

Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and Galaxy S III receive India price cuts

Samsung seems to have slashed the prices of its two premium mid-range smartphones, the Galaxy S4 mini and Galaxy S III in India. It is not clear whether the price cut is part of a limited period festival offer or not.The Samsung Galaxy S III is now available for Rs. 25,400 compared with Rs. 28,900 earlier while the Galaxy S4 mini will be now available for Rs. 23,360 (16GB model) down from the previous price tag of Rs. 27,990, at Samsung's official online store. Both the smartphones have seen a price cut of around Rs. 4,000.
Additionally, both the smartphones are now also available at Flipkart with additional discounts. The Galaxy S III is available at Rs. 24,900, while the Galaxy S4 mini has an offer price of Rs. 22,900.
The South Korean major launched the Galaxy S III in May last year at a price of Rs. 43,180, while the Galaxy S4 mini, a 'mini' variant of company's flagship, the Galaxy S4, was launched earlier this year for Rs. 27,990.
The price slash news come ahead of festivals season, and it could be assumed as a limited period festival offer for both the smartphones.

Not too long ago, BlackBerry also announced a price cut for its flagship smartphone, the Z10 in India. However, the company mentioned that the price cut is a limited period festival offer but has not revealed the duration of the offer.

HTC One Max with 5.9-inch full-HD display, fingerprint scanner launched

HTC's much-anticipated One Max phablet is now official, even ahead of the event scheduled for October 16 in Hong Kong. The device is expected to be available some time from the middle or end of October, and so far, there is no word on the pricing of the new phablet.It comes with 5.9-inch full-HD LCD display and runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box with HTC's Sense 5.5 UI on top. The new phablet measures 164.5x82.5x10.29mm and weighs 217 grams. The HTC One Max follows the same design as that of company's flagship smartphone, the HTC One.
The all new phablet from HTC features the long-rumoured fingerprint scanner at the back which according to Engadget lets users log-in with a swipe of fingertip. The HTC One Max is now the second device launched this year to come with a fingerprint scanner feature after the Apple iPhone 5s.
Other specifications of the HTC One Max include a 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB/ 32GB inbuilt storage variants with support for up to 64GB of additional external storage via microSD card. The device features HTC's UltraPixel Camera at the back while there is a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera and also comes with HTC Zoe and HTC BoomSound, first seen on HTC One.
Connectivity features on the HTC One Max include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, DLNA and HTC Connect. The device also packs a 3300mAh battery which can give up to 25 hours of talktime and 585 hours of standby time for 3G networks.

iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c India price officially confirmed by Apple

Apple has confirmed the official India launch price for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.

iPhone 5s will be available for Rs. 53,500 for the 16GB model, Rs. 62,500 for the 32GB model and Rs. 71,500 for the 64GB model. iPhone 5c will be available for Rs. 41,900 for the 16GB model and Rs. 53,500 for the 32GB model. All prices are inclusive of all taxes.

iPhone 5s will be available in Gold, Silver (White) and Space Grey (Black), while the iPhone 5c will be available in Blue, Green, Pink, Yellow and White colour options. Both phones will go on sale in India on November 1.

Earlier, the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c India launch price was revealed by mobile operator RCom, which also confirmed it will be offering Apple's new iPhones in the country starting November 1. Airtel will also be offering the new iPhones to its customers.

Apple also confirmed that iPhone 5s cases will be available in Beige, Black, Blue, Brown, Yellow and Red colours for a maximum retail price of Rs. 3,200 and iPhone 5c cases will come in Blue, Green, Pink, Yellow, Black and White for a maximum retail price of Rs. 2,300.

iPhone 5s comes with the Apple-designed A7 64-bit chip, all-new 8 megapixel iSight camera with True Tone flash and Touch ID fingerprint sensor. iPhone 5c features an all-new design, comes in multiple colours and packs internals almost identical to the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5s and 5c will be available on Friday, October 25 in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, French West Indies, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macau, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Reunion Island, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan and Thailand.

Android 4.4 KitKat further detailed in new leaked screenshots

Multiple screenshots from a Nexus 7 (2013) tablet reportedly running Android 4.4 KitKat have surfaced online.The latest set of purported Android 4.4 KitKat screenshots comes courtesy ZDNet which reveals the Android version running on the tablet as 'Key Lime Pie', suggesting that this is not the final Android 4.4 build. However, the new leaked screenshot reveals some important UI changes expected in the next iteration of Android.
Some of the new additions revealed by the alleged screenshots of Android 4.4 include 'Moving mosaic', a new feature which can be accessed when pressing the KitKat logo and appears to be an Android OS timeline as it shows Android's journey from Cup Cake (1.5) to Jelly Bean (4.3); new App Drawer which the site notes looks similar to the Android 4.3 but includes new icons for YouTube, Settings, Google, and Voice Search and QuickOffice app for editing Microsoft Office files.
The new leaked screenshots further reveal revamped clock, stopwatch and timer apps, and a new download section for apps and games. One of leaked screenshots also refers to a new Print feature being available when viewing an image, reportedly allowing the user to save the image as a PDF locally, or even view network printers and print out a hard copy, which was leaked earlier.
Earlier this week, a bunch of new images and a walkthrough video reportedly showing the alleged Nexus 5 smartphone running the new iteration of Google's mobile operating system surfaced on the Internet.
The new leaked live images revealed some of the new features of the Android 4.4 KitKat which include transparent notification and navigation bar; Google Photos and Hangouts replacing the conventional messaging and gallery apps respectively; a new camera launch icon is now seen sitting on the left corner of the display on the lockscreen; ability to add more homescreen panes; new wallpapers; Google Now to activate by saying 'Ok Google' from the homescreen and new boot animation reportedly borrowed from the Play Editions of Galaxy S4 and HTC One.
Meanwhile, Google in keeping with its tight-lipped ways, has not revealed its plan for the upcoming launch of Android 4.4 and Nexus 5.

Amazon reportedly partners with HTC to make smartphones

Amazon.com Inc is developing smartphones with HTC Corp, putting it in a position to compete with Apple Inc and Google Inc, the Financial Times reported.One device is already in an advanced stage of development, the paper reported, citing a source. However, another source said Amazon may decide not to release it, according to the paper.
The device is likely to be launched in 2014 if Amazon decides to proceed with the project, the newspaper said.
Amazon and HTC could not be immediately reached for comment.
Speculation that Amazon will launch its own mobile devices has been around for years. In 2011, Citigroup said that Amazon would launch a smartphone in 2012 through a partnership with contract cellphone maker Foxconn International.
If Amazon turns to Asia to launch a smartphone, it will be following the example of Google, which tied up with Taiwan's Asus and South Korea's LG Electronics for its Nexus devices.

Apple sends invitations for October 22 event, refreshed iPad lineup expected

Apple sent out invitations on Tuesday to a special event on October 22 in San Francisco, revealing little about what is expected to be a day devoted to iPad updates.

Emailed invitations bore few details other than time and place, and bore the message: "We still have a lot to cover."

A colourful graphic in the shape of an iPad showed Apple's iconic logo under a shower of colourful leaves.

The invitations came about a week after unconfirmed reports that Apple will show off a new version of its popular iPad tablet computer that will be thinner than its predecessor and boast improved camera capabilities.

Scrutiny of Apple's supply chain has industry trackers thinking the new iPad will get "narrower, thinner, and lighter" and possibly built with processors at least as powerful as those used in the freshly-launched iPhone 5S, according to Gartner analyst Van Baker.

An upgraded version of the iPad mini with an improved screen is also expected.

Baker will be watching for whether new iPad models have 64-bit processors as engines in a significant boost that would enable tablets to handle more heavy weight programs and games.

"It has the potential to make tablets much more compelling devices in terms of content creation; making devices more sophisticated with more horsepower-hungry applications," the analyst said.

"It will increase the likelihood that tablets will displace PCs (personal computers)."

Building more powerful computing engines in iPads would also ramp up gaming capabilities, Baker said, while adding: "Not that it needs a lot of help."

He also suggested that top-end full-size iPads could get a fingerprint recognition security feature that has proven a hit in the iPhone 5S.

Such upgrades would promise to entice buyers to pay a bit more for full-size tablets from Apple instead of choosing lower-priced Mini models, boding well for the company's bottom line, according to the analyst.

The iPad remains the largest-selling tablet, according to surveys, but its market share is being eroded by rivals using the Google Android operating system.

Apple was also expected to discuss its computer operating system and its MacBook laptop line at the event, timed for the start of the year-end holiday shopping season.

Apple is coming off a wildly successful launch of two new iPhone models last month. The California firm said it sold a record nine million iPhones in the three days after launching two new versions of the smartphone.

Sony Xperia C with 5-inch display, dual-SIM launched at Rs. 21,490

Sony has launched its latest phablet, the Xperia C, in the Indian market at a price point of Rs. 21,490. Earlier this month, the device was listed at some online retailers for Rs. 20,490. The Sony Xperia C was officially unveiled earlier this year, at the Mobile Asia Expo.
The company has informed that the Xperia C comes with accidental damage cover for 6 months from the date of purchase. Further, Sony has tied-up with Airtel to offer 1GB free data access, for the first two months following the purchase of the smartphone.
The new Sony Xperia C boasts Sony's OmniBalance design, first seen in its flagship phone, Xperia Z. It is the first smartphone from the Japanese handset giant in the Indian market to be powered by a MediaTek MTK6589 quad-core processor; clocked at 1.2GHz.
The Xperia C features a 5-inch TFT LCD qHD (540x960 pixel) display and runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. It includes 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage, which can be further expanded up to 32GB via microSD card. The Sony Xperia C is a dual-SIM smartphone (GSM+GSM) with dual standby.
The Xperia C sports an 8-megapixel rear camera with Exmor R sensor. The camera comes with features like face detection and Sweep Panorama, and is also capable of shooting videos in full-HD (1080p) mode. The phone also sports a 0.3-megapixel front camera.
Connectivity options include 3G, Wi-Fi, DLNA, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. The smartphone will be available in White, Black and Purple colour options.

Samsung is reportedly working on a new eye-scanning feature which is expected to be introduced on the Galaxy S4's successor.According to a report by AndroidSaS that cites some sources from Korea, claims that the South Korean giant has started working on an eye-scanning sensor which will be featured in the rumoured Galaxy S5. The feature is said to bring the eye-scanning unlock ability to the smartphones. Unfortunately, the report does not reveal many details of the alleged eye-scanning unlock feature.
The eye-scanning feature has not been introduced on any smartphone (from a major manufacturer) as an unlocking method, and if the rumour is true, Samsung would become the first handset maker to debut the feature on a smartphone. However, there is no official word from Samsung on the alleged eye-scanning feature.
Previously, Apple and HTC have introduced the fingerprint scanner features to the iPhone 5s and One Max respectively. The fingerprint scanner feature lets users to log-in (and authorize payments, etc., on the iPhone 5s) with a swipe of the fingertip.
Earlier a report, predicted that Samsung will refresh its flagship smartphone offering sooner than expected. The report suggested that Samsung has been preparing to launch the Galaxy S5 smartphone in January due to disappointing Galaxy S4 sales. It cited internal sources and informed that the Galaxy S5 is likely to be announced as early as mid-January, with a market release expected to take place in February.
The report also shed some light on the specifications of the alleged Galaxy S5 smartphone. It claimed that the phone would be powered by a 64-bit Exynos 5430 chip and will sport a 16-megapixel camera with enhanced low-light performance and Optical Image Stabilisation.
The South Korean major has already revealed that its next smartphone would be powered by a 64-bit chip, after Apple unveiled the iPhone 5s which is powered by a 64-bit processor.
