Yahoo News names editor, plans major expansion

yahoo-hq-635.jpg

Yahoo News named a new editor-in-chief Monday who comes from The New York Times and promised a "major expansion" of news gathering at the US Internet giant.Megan Liberman, deputy news editor of The New York Times, started on Monday, taking the position which has been vacant since Hillary Frey left earlier this year.
Liberman "will lead a major expansion of Yahoo News, bringing in new voices and defining features for the site," the company said in a statement, noting that she would "focus primarily on original reporting, social news gathering, video and live events coverage."
"Megan is a dynamic addition to the Yahoo News team," said Robertson Barrett, vice president of Yahoo News and Finance.
"As deputy news editor at The New York Times she drove some of the most successful digital initiatives, from its blog network to Nate Silver's multi-platform presence to live streamed coverage of the 2012 elections.
"She is a natural fit to lead editorial for the world's largest news site, and she will help us take Yahoo News to the next level."
At the Times, Liberman previously worked as deputy editor of the newspaper's magazine, where she was responsible for digital features and strategy. She also directed the magazine's political coverage, and launched the Times's parenting blog, Motherlode.
Yahoo News is the most visited news website, according to the Web information site Alexa. The analytics website eBizMBA estimates it gets 110 million unique visitors monthly.
Yahoo has been undergoing major changes since former Google executive Marissa Mayer became boss early last year, notably acquiring 20 startups including the billion-dollar buy of blog platform Tumblr.

Google Nexus 7 (2013) with 4G LTE hits Play Store in the US

google_nexus_7_new.jpg

Google's latest Nexus 7 (2013) tablet with 4G LTE is now available through Google Play Store in US for $349 (Rs. 22,447 approximately).Google announced the news on Twitter and also revealed that the Nexus 7 will come to T-Mobile stores in the U.S. next month. The tweet said, "Nexus 7 with 4G LTE is now available on Google Play in the US and is coming to US T-Mobile stores in October!" The new Nexus 7 LTE variant has arrived at the stores more than a month after the Wi-Fi variant of the Nexus 7 went on sale. Currently, the second-generation Nexus 7 comes with T-Mobile SIM. However, it comes unlocked that allows other carrier options on the tablet as well. However, there is no official word from Google on the device's rollout to countries like India.
The search engine giant launched the second-generation Nexus 7 in July alongside the unveiling of the new Android 4.3 Jelly Bean platform.
The Nexus 7 (2013) comes with a 7-inch full-HD display (1920x1200 pixels), implying a boast-worthy pixel density of 323ppi. It also features scratch-resistant Corning glass. It is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5GHz, and features 2GB of RAM, apart from 32GB of inbuilt storage (with no SD card slot). The new Nexus 7 also features a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera.
Previously, the Nexus 7 (2013) was diagnosed with various issues, notably the erratic performance of multi-touch functionality on the tablet's display. Google rolled out a firmware update for the Nexus 7 (2013), addressing many of these issues.

However, Nvidia has not revealed any plans of launching an Android tablet, yet.The latest FCC (Federal Communications Commission) listing confirms that the alleged Nvidia Tegra Tab 7 tablet is dubbed the P1640.
The listing hints that Nvidia may roll out two different variants of the 7-inch Tegra Tab tablet. The listing of the rumoured Nvidia tablet reveals some new features like stylus support, SD card support, HDMI and rear camera will be for premium model of the tablet, features that will probably not be available in the more affordable model.
Earlier, the tablet was spotted in a bunch of high-resolution images that emerged online, revealing the overall design of the tablet and also claimed that the tablet from Nvidia will come with a stylus.
Previously, AnTuTu benchmark results of the alleged Nvidia Tegra Tab 7 surfaced online. Twitter buys mobile advertising startup MoPub

Twitter buys mobile advertising startup MoPub

mopub-635.jpg

Twitter is moving deeper into mobile advertising with the purchase of MoPub, a startup focusing on mobile ad exchanges. The acquisition announced late Monday was estimated to be worth some $350 million, according to the technology news site TechCrunch.
"MoPub's technology lets mobile application publishers manage their inventory and optimize multiple sources of advertising direct ads, house ads, ad network, and real-time bidding through the MoPub Marketplace," Twitter's Kevin Weil said in a blog post.
"The two major trends in the ad world right now are the rapid consumer shift toward mobile usage, and the industry shift to programmatic buying. Twitter sits at the intersection of these, and we think by bringing MoPub's technology and team to Twitter, we can further drive these trends for the benefit of consumers, advertisers, and agencies."
Weil said Twitter also plans to use MoPub's technology "to build real-time bidding into the Twitter ads platform so our advertisers can more easily automate and scale their buys."
Twitter earlier this year began to allow ads to be targeted at users based on the words written in tweets.
The fast-growing social network is expected to earn $582.8 million globally in ad revenue this year and nearly $1 billion next year, according to industry tracker eMarketer. It remains privately held, but a number of reports indicate the company may launch an initial public offering.

iOS 7: First impressions

iOS 7: First impressions

tim-cook-ios7-635.jpg

One of the best things about Apple's latest iPhones is the slick new iOS 7 software that runs the devices. But that souped-up operating system could end up hurting sales because the free software upgrade will also work on iPhones released since 2010, giving owners of the older models less incentive to buy Apple's newest products.Perhaps unwittingly, even Apple's software boss Craig Federighi alluded to this potential problem while he was bragging about iOS 7 at the company's unveiling of its new phones Tuesday. He predicted that anyone who elects to install the software will feel "like they're getting an all-new device."
(Also see: Apple unveils iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s)
I understood what Federighi meant once I was able to see the iOS 7's improvements in action on Apple's two new iPhones, the iPhone 5c and the iPhone 5s. Although Apple announced iOS 7 at a conference three months ago, Tuesday marked the first time the company allowed reporters to experience the software hands-on.
Although the iPhone 5c is less expensive than its predecessor, the iPhone 5, iOS 7 almost made it look fancier than previous generations. As an iPhone 5 owner, I was feeling a bit envious until I remembered that I'll be able to spiff up my device, too, when the software is released on Sept. 18. The operating system will work on the iPhone 4 and later models, iPad 2s and subsequent versions, and the iPod Touch that came out late last year.
iOS 7 looks much different than previous versions of the operating system because it no longer displays iPhone apps as three-dimensional, embossed objects meant to mirror their real-world counterparts. The icons instead are flatter and more colorful.
ios-7-635.jpgAny significant change in design typically upsets users familiar with the old way of doing things, but I suspect the complaints about iOS 7 will be muted unless there are some terrible bugs in the software that weren't evident during the brief time that I was given to experiment.
I am fairly certain most people who download iOS 7 are going to be pleased. The software makes it easier to navigate around an iPhone and adds some compelling new features.
(Also see: 10 big improvements in Apple's iOS 7)
The additions include the ability to stream music through an advertising-supported service called iTunes Radio and five free apps that used to cost consumers anywhere from 99 cents to $4.99 apiece. The free apps are Apple's photo-editing tool, iPhoto, and video-editing program, iMovie, as well as work-oriented apps called Pages, Numbers and Keynote.
Apple doesn't appear to be removing any popular apps built into the operating system, as best as I could tell. The company did that last year when it replaced Google's mapping app with its own navigation system only to be ridiculed for misguiding users with shoddy directions. Apple isn't bringing back Google Maps with iOS 7, but it is promising that its alternative is getting better.
The software upgrade also will make it easier to take better pictures on the iPhone and automatically sort photos into different categories to denote particular events. I particularly liked a feature that lets you control how the camera operates by toggling between options at the bottom of the screen with the swipe of a finger. Once the camera is open in IOS 7, the choices include taking a square, panoramic or standard photo. The bottom-of-the screen controls also include an option to switch to video mode.
iphone-photo-app-635.jpgWhen taking a picture in iOS 7, photographers can also choose a filter to use as they snap the photo rather than waiting to touch up the shot later. When shooting video, shots can be zoomed in while recording. I can't do any of that on my iPhone 5 because it is still powered by iOS 6.
The new system also empowers users to access other open apps more easily by clicking twice on the home button. When you do that, the apps are displayed as tiles that can be scrolled across horizontally so you can more easily see and choose several of them.
Apple is also making it easier to access frequently used controls such as and airplane mode by enabling users to pull up the panel from the bottom of the display screen instead of finding and pressing a settings option.
Other than the new software, the iPhone 5c isn't anything special, as one might expect from a cheaper phone.
(Also see: iPhone 5c price disappointment: 'Low-cost iPhone' fails to check-in)
The only thing that really distinguishes the 5c from the iPhone 5 is that it's housed in plastic instead of aluminum. Some consumers will no doubt like the plastic alternative because it comes in five colors: green, blue, yellow, pink and white. The price also may be more appealing, with the 5c starting at $99 with a two-year wireless contract, a $100 discount from iPhone models released in previous years.
A higher-end iPhone dubbed the 5s boasts several advantages that aren't available on any other model. The coolest innovation allows you to use your fingerprint to unlock the iPhone 5s instead of relying on a four-digit code that has to be repeatedly typed in. The fingerprint reader can also be used to access Apple's apps and iTunes store instead of a password.
(Also see: 10 new features in Apple's iPhone 5s)
Apple CEO Tim Cook thinks the fingerprint scanner will revolutionize technology security. "There is going to be a whole new generation of kids who grow up not knowing what a password is," Cook predicted during a brief discussion with a small group of reporters after he left the room where Apple was demonstrating its new iPhones.
iphone-scanner-afp-635.jpgI found the fingerprint scanner, called "Touch ID," simple to use during my brief test of the 5s. It just took less than a minute for the phone to record the fingerprint on my thumb, instructing me along the way. Once my prints were in the phone's memory bank, all I had to do was lightly press on the home button when the 5s was locked in sleep mode and it quickly opened.
The 5s also contains a faster processor and technological wizardry designed to take sharper pictures and even record slow-motion video.
Best of all, though, the 5s comes with the iOS 7. I am already looking forward to downloading the software next week so I can simulate what it's like to have a new iPhone for free.

Google+ enables public post embeds, integrates Sign-ins with Authorship program

Google+ enables public post embeds, integrates Sign-ins with Authorship program

Google%2Bembeded-posts1.jpg

Google has now enabled embeds on Google+, its social networking website, allowing users to embed public Google+ posts anywhere on the web.

With the move, Google follows the likes of Twitter and Facebook, sites that also allow users to embed specific tweets and posts on different websites through a set of code. As per Google, embeds support text, photo and media posts and are fully interactive, so visitors on a third party site will be able to +1, comment and follow the user who wrote the original post, inline.

To embed a post, users simply need to find a public post on Google+, and select 'Embed post' from the drop-down menu. They just need to copy the code, and add it to their web page for embedding it.

In addition to embeds, Google has also integrated Google+ Sign-ins with its Authorship program. This implies that Google's search results, news and other web products will display the author's name, picture and/ or a link to their Google+ profile when they blog through WordPress and Typepad blogging platforms using their Google credentials.

Google+-authorship.jpgThis essentially means that if you sign-in on WordPress or Typepad through your Google credentials and blog, your blog-posts would appear with your name, picture and/ or a link to your Google+ profile when it appears in Google's search or news listing.

Google has tied up with NDTV.com, Business Insider, Elle, Eurosport, Financial Times, LA Times, National Geographic,  Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, People StyleWatch, TechCrunch, Thrillist, TV Guide, US Weekly, and The Verge to showcase embeds. It is also working with sites like About.com, WikiHow, and Examiner to extend its Authorship program to them.

With the initiative, it looks like Google intends to promote Google+ which has failed to get the same level of traction and attention as Twitter and Facebook, aiding discovery of content which is currently restricted to users of the Google+ platform. With Google+ content appearing on other websites, perhaps Google hopes that it would be able to pull more users. The company is doing its best to integrate Google+ with all its products including YouTube and Chat, to further promote its use.

Microsoft releases Xbox Music apps for Android and iOS

Microsoft releases Xbox Music apps for Android and iOS

xboxmusicpass-apps.jpg

Microsoft has released free apps for Android and iOS for its Xbox Music streaming service along with the launch of a web version that lets users of Xbox Music Pass stream music through the service for free.

While the web streaming service is free for the first six months after which it's restricted to a number of hours, users will need to subscribe to the Xbox Music Pass service for $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year to get unlimited access to music across tablets, PCs, phones and Xbox consoles. Xbox Music Pass also offers unlimited access to music videos on the Xbox 360. The model is similar to the one offered by services like Spotify and Hulu wherein the web service is offered free while access to the service on mobile devices needs a subscription.

"Xbox Music now, more than ever, powers music experiences between Windows 8, Xbox, Windows Phone, and now iOS, Android and the Web," said Jerry Johnson, general manager of Xbox Music. "We're also excited to connect artists with their fans on the most anticipated consumer product of the year when Xbox One launches Nov. 22."

Microsoft says it will add Radio to the free Web player, a quick and dynamic way to personalise the users' music collection, discover new favourites, and create playlists by launching instant mixes based on their favourite artists. The Radio service will come with unlimited skips and a view of the full recommended music stream.

In the coming months, additional updates for iOS and Android platforms will bring an offline mode that would let users save  music to their device for playback without an Internet or data connection.

The expansion of the service beyond Windows 8 devices and Xbox game consoles starting Monday is intended to bring new customers into the software giant's ecosystem of devices and services and could help it compete with other digital music offerings like Pandora, Spotify and iTunes. The company acknowledgement that the music service hasn't done much to drive sales of the Windows 8 operating system.

Most buyers of the new Windows 8 operating system discovered Xbox Music because it's the default player for music files that people have imported from elsewhere, according to Xbox Music general manager Jerry Johnson. Opening it up to the broader public would give more people a chance to see the benefits of having multiple devices linked to Microsoft's platform.

BlackBerry's biggest shareholder wants to take the smartphone maker private

BlackBerry's biggest shareholder wants to take the smartphone maker private

RIMbb.jpg

BlackBerry's biggest shareholder has approached several large Canadian investment funds about forging a deal to take the smartphone maker private, but the proposal is still "an airy-fairy, 'what if' kind of thing," according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. The shareholder, Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd, has a 10 percent stake, and its chairman and chief executive, Prem Watsa, has left BlackBerry's board already to avoid any possible conflict of interest as the company assesses its strategic options.
The source, who declined to be identified because the still-preliminary talks are private, said that in addition to Watsa's Fairfax there had been an early and informal approach about a possible deal from another investor.
The person declined to name the second party.
"There have been various calls saying 'if we came up with some kind of a proposal would you look at it?'," the source said.
Fairfax did not respond to a request for comment, and Waterloo, Ontario-based BlackBerry said it does not comment on speculation.
BlackBerry, which has bled market share to rivals including Apple's iPhone and phones using Google's Android technology, said last month it was weighing its options, which could include an outright sale.
(Also see: BlackBerry may put itself up for sale)
BlackBerry shares rose more than 6 percent on Monday after Britain's Sunday Times newspaper said Watsa was closing in on a rescue deal for BlackBerry, with support from Canada's influential pension funds.
The big funds, including Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, declined to comment.
BlackBerry shares closed at $11.53 on the Nasdaq, up from $10.84 at the close on Friday, giving the company a market capitalization of just over $6 billion.
The source said any deal would likely involve more than one of Canada's powerful pension funds, which would have to weigh the possible benefits of helping a fallen Canadian icon with the risks of getting involved in such a deal.
If a concrete proposal was on the table - something that is not yet the case - things would likely "go quiet" while investors looked at their options, the source said.

The latest word on HTC's rumoured upcoming flagship phablet codenamed HTC T6 is that the company plans to officially introduce the smartphone as the HTC One Max.Popular phone tipster, @evleaks claims that the HTC One Max has been confirmed as the retail name of the HTC T6. The tweet said, "HTC One max confirmed as retail name of the T6." However, the tweet does not mention anything about the possible launch dates of the long-rumoured HTC One Max. The Taiwanese handset giant has been rumoured for a while to be working on a large screen smartphone which will boast a large 5.9-inch display.
Earlier, specifications of HTC's upcoming One Max phablet surfaced online. The device is said to run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with HTC's Sense 5.5 UI on top. Other specifications leaked include TD-LTE connectivity, a 5.9-inch full-HD display with 1080x1920 pixels resolution, and a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor coupled with 2GB of RAM. The leaked specifications also revealed that the alleged HTC One Max will sport a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera and the 4MP UltraPixel camera on the back, which was introduced on the HTC One.
Some reports even claimed that the HTC's phablet may be showcased this month that pointed out to possible launch at IFA in Berlin. However, the device was not showcased at the event.
Not too long ago, alleged renders of the HTC One Max (T6) were leaked online. The leaked image showed was supposed to be the non-final artwork of the HTC T6. While it was not the final artwork, it did give a good idea of what to expect from the upcoming phablet from HTC.
HTC had teased a video tagged 'Big Things Ahead' that pointed out at a big screen device in the works.

Internet giants redouble efforts to disclose details on NSA spying requests

Internet giants redouble efforts to disclose details on NSA spying requests

man-typing-635.jpg

Some of the world's biggest Internet companies on Monday increased efforts to disclose more about their forced cooperation with U.S. spy agencies, and Google Inc asked a court to hold what would be unprecedented public oral arguments.Google Inc, Facebook Inc and others met with a panel established by the White House to review the sweeping domestic surveillance exposed by Edward Snowden, a former contractor at the National Security Agency.
Separately, Google asked the secret court that approves spying requests for a public hearing on their quest to reveal how many orders the company complies with. Facebook and Yahoo Inc made their own first filings on Monday seeking the ability to disclose more about the orders following Google and Microsoft Corp filings in June.
Google's new court filing adds to its earlier petition. It complains that its reputation and business have been damaged by what it says were misleading reports that the NSA had "direct access" to its internal servers. The companies have denied those reports, and most now publish summaries that give the number of all the government requests they receive.
Most lump together foreign intelligence demands with routine criminal inquiries, though Google says it receives fewer than 1,000 National Security Letters per year, affecting fewer than 2,000 accounts.
The companies want to say more, and Google argues that its First Amendment right to speak out, especially on a matter of great political and public importance, outweighs any harm to intelligence efforts that would come from releasing more detailed but still aggregate statistics.
"The government has identified no statute or regulation that prohibits such disclosure and it is not appropriate for this court to undertake the essentially legislative function of creating such a prohibition," Google wrote in its filing with the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.
The court, whose members are appointed by the U.S. Supreme Court chief justice, has never held a public session and generally hears only from the U.S. Justice Department and intelligence agency lawyers.
A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment.
Google's move follows its confirmation that it is moving more quickly to encrypt data as it moves internally at the company.
On Sunday, Brazilian television cited new Snowden documents in reporting that the NSA has tried to attack Google or at least intercept communications from its users to the company.
"As for recent reports that the U.S. government has found ways to circumvent our security systems, we have no evidence of any such thing ever occurring," a Google spokesman said Monday.
The panel established by the White House, called the Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technology, was charged with recommending how to balance security and privacy concerns.
President Barack Obama met with the new group on August 27. On Monday, it met with the big technology companies and separately met with privacy and civil liberties groups.
Someone briefed on the first meeting said the companies were united in seeking more transparency and that they found the session "constructive."
The review panel is to provide an interim report within two months.

‘We aim to create small scale, low-cost practices in teaching or school management’

‘We aim to create small scale, low-cost practices in teaching or school management’

Interview of the Day: ‘We aim to create small scale, low-cost practices in teaching or school management’ Sharath Jeevan, CEO and Founder, STIR Education

How was STIR founded?
STIR was founded in Delhi in 2012 with an ambition to provide quality education to students by empowering teachers and principals. We aim to identify, test and scale ‘micro-innovations’ – low-cost (and often no-cost), scalable, teacher-led practices that have the potential, if shared widely, to make a significant positive impact on student learning.
What are the strategies implemented by STIR to address the issue of quality education in India?
We aim to approach this problem in two ways.
First, we have created a platform for finding, testing and scaling the most promising ‘micro-innovations’ – small scale, low cost practices in teaching or school management practices, directly from teachers and principals. This year our search process will cover over 1,500 schools across the country and we work with over 50 organisational partners – ranging from Pratham to the Bharti Foundation to the Indian and Delhi governments – to scale innovations up. For example, a student motivation innovation – which rewarded students for achieving strong performance in specific skill areas – has been scaled up by the Bharti Foundation
Secondly, we aim to create India’s largest independent network of committed and innovative teachers. These networks involve regular meetings where teachers can discuss problems they are facing, adapt and implement these micro-innovations to solve problems, and see tangible results on educational outcomes for their children. By ensuring that the best micro-innovations from within local communities are uncovered, this approach ensures that local problems are met with the best locally relevant, teacher-driven solutions.
Over the next three years in India we aim to impact 12,000 teachers in STIR and partner-supported networks across the country. We also hope to touch a further 28,000 teachers through the scale-up of the micro-innovations identified. Overall, STIR therefore seeks to impact over a million children and create India’s largest network of committed and innovative teachers.”
What are the challenges faced while implementing those strategies in India?
There is often a lot of skepticism and cynicism in India about teachers. While some of this is justified (e.g. one in four teachers is typically absent on a given school day), we strongly believe that there is a critical mass of teachers across the country that are committed and want to improve outcomes for their children. We also believe that many more are inherently committed and care deeply, but have become disillusioned and jaded down with the system. By using recognition and non-financial incentives (such as certification) for teachers to voluntarily join our innovation networks, we believe we can bring energy to this group of teachers and also ‘infect’ and encourage others to join also. Most of all, we believe that if teachers can meet like-minded peers who share the same beliefs and dedication – and if we can provide practical help by suggesting innovations that can make a practical difference to schools – then there can be an enormous impact on the teaching profession, and on how teachers are viewed more broadly by society.
Are you planning to expand your workforce in India?
Yes. We are currently 11 staff in India and hope to grow this to about 60 over the next three years. However, we always want to be a lean organisation relative to the impact we hope to stimulate. We achieve most of our impact through supporting and empowering our partners and our networks,
What talent and skills do you look for in candidates willing to join your organisation?
We look for the right attitude. Do the candidates care about education and specifically about our mission? Are they resilient and can they cope with difficult and unexpected challenges? Do they enjoy meeting with and working with a very wide range of stakeholders – on a typical day they might be meeting a government official, a teacher, a partner and a funder. In terms of skills, communication skills and project management skills are probably the most important. But overall, we are looking for people who are versatile, who enjoy stretching themselves and taking themselves out of their own comfort zones, in an exciting and fast paced entrepreneurial environment.

10 tricks to become a loving, positive person

It's one thing to wax eloquent on positivity, but quite another to be a positive person at heart.

Despite believing to have a positive outlook, we invariably weigh the cons first, consider several times before sparing a compliment, and broadcast only the odds when someone counts on us for advice. What's more, we prefer needless sarcasm for humour, manage a wry smile when something is genuinely funny, and believe deep down that the glass is actually half empty.

We live in denial of our inherent negativity for the most part, and often wonder why the world around is so mean and reckless. At work, we never fail telling our juniors how meeting deadlines can be a tough proposition, and not to think too 'out of the box' to impress the boss. In short, we never tire telling all concerned how tough things can be! Unlike dogs we may not be born eternal optimists, but positivity is something that can be imbibed even if a tad forcibly; such as by trying to tweak our sense of humour, the way we react to a given situation, by being more pleasant and believing others too have a mind, and by smiling each time somebody says 'thank you'.

While positivity is a state of mind, the answer lies in our perspective. Clinical psychologist and lifestyle advisor Dr S.K Sharma shares his ideas on how to be a positive person everyday.

Have the desire: First thing first, to become a positive person one must have a strong desire to be positive. And the desire will come only if you are convinced that becoming a positive person will enhance the quality of life. Positivity is like an aura, and you know you are a positive person when people start trusting you, random people become polite with you, colleagues at work start patronising you, and you start building rapport easily.

Be realistic: Do not try to become a saint. Becoming a positive person does not mean you can never have any negative emotion or encounter any negative situation. It is the overall attitude that matters. Don't get bogged down by failure, and disappointed when your expectations are not met. Mentally, you should always be calculating a way out of difficult situations come what may.

Experiment: Be a keen observer. Use everyday life incidents to see how you can manage them in a more positive manner. These will serve as perfect instances to turn your outlook more positive. For starters, contemplate how you could have better handled a situation by being less hostile and more indulgent. Come up with five ways that could have saved the day, and learn to take things at face value sometimes. Remember, your ability to trust the other person also reflects your genuineness.

Speech and body language: Try and make positive words a part of your daily lingo, and work on your body language in way that you come across as friendly and approachable. Look amused when something is amusing, laugh when something is funny, congratulate when someone's bought something new, and give others a chance to narrate their side of the story. Never think you are the only interesting, knowing one around.

Company: One way to becoming positive is to seek positive company as both positivity and negativity are infectious. If the people you spend most of your time with are grumpy or have a pessimistic standpoint, you'll find yourself mirroring the same emotions before a different set of people inadvertently. In order to inculcate positivity it is imperative that your friend circle is a positive, energetic, and a happy bunch. You'll find yourself carrying the same positivity everywhere you go.

Activities: Do not remain idle and brood. Take up positive activities with others or in isolation. Share a joke, narrate a pleasant incident, take part in sporting activities, go for a run in the evening after work, have healthy sex, and you'll find yourself bubbling with positive energy.

Take it easy: Everyday life is bound to give you shocks. Be prepared to minimise impact and shrug it off. For instance, you may get too hassled everyday while driving to work or trying to park your car. When you accept the fact that certain things cannot be changed, you'll be more at ease with yourself and those around too.

Learn yoga: Says yoga teacher and nutritionist, Abhilasha Kale, "Do pranayam everyday as it lets you focus and meditate. Not only does it secrete happy hormones but also creates a sense of awareness within you." With the help of yogic asanas you control your breathing, and by way of it, control your mind from wandering. Every time you do yoga, you feel a surge of positive energy through your body that calms your nerves, soothes your mind, elevates your mood, and not to mention enhances your level of tolerance.

Maintain a diary: Instead of recounting all events of the day, filter out only the positive ones and make a note of them. It could be anything trivial from your bus arriving on time, your mom cooking a delicious breakfast, to remembering to pay the bills on time. When we look for positivity in the little things that make our lives worthwhile, we leave no room for negativity. "Try consciously practising this for 10 days, and at the end of day ten when you read your diary back you'll only have memories of all the good things that happened to you," she asserts.

Say 'thank you': Thank god, thank your parents, friends, and thank yourself for all the hard work you did, for everything you achieved. Says Abhilasha, "Saying thank you frequently makes you humble, and a humble person is seldom cynical."

Try these methods, and you'll be surprised when others notice the change in you.

Intel is working on a new line of ultra-small and ultra-low-power microchips for wearable devices like smartwatches and bracelets.

SAN FRANCISCO: Intel is working on a new line of ultra-small and ultra-low-power microchips for wearable devices like smartwatches and bracelets, a bid by the company to make sure it will be at the crest of the next big technology wave after arriving late to the smartphone and tablet revolution.

The new line of chips, called Intel Quark, will ship next year and include an ingestible version aimed at biomedical uses, Intel's president, Renee James, told reporters late on Monday.

The Quark chips will be five times smaller and 10 times more power efficient than some of Intel's Atom chips for tablets and smartphones, she said.

"We're very committed to not missing the next big thing," James said.

Intel, the world's biggest chipmaker, dominates the PC industry, but it was slow to adapt its chips to be suitable for smartphones and tablets.

Intel Chief Executive Brian Krzanich and James spoke on Tuesday at the company's annual developer conference in San Francisco, their first major public appearance since their promotion in May, when Paul Otellini stepped aside as chief executive.

Intel's focus on wearable computing -- a trend that for many Americans evokes images of Dick Tracy, the comic strip detective who sported a two-way wrist radio -- comes as Silicon Valley eyes sophisticated computerized watches with touch-screens and other high-tech features. Technology companies see wearables as a growth opportunity amid signs that explosive expansion in smartphones shipments since Apple launched its first iPhone in 2007 is receding.

Last week, Samsung Electronics launched the Galaxy Gear watch, and Qualcomm, an Intel rival, launched the Toq smartwatch in a bid to showcase its technology to potential manufacturers.

Krzanich, a three-decade Intel veteran seen as the company's manufacturing guru, has said that under his leadership Intel will give much more priority to its Atom line of mobile chips. In the past, Intel's most cutting-edge manufacturing resources were reserved for making powerful PC chips, with Atom chips made on older production lines.

Processors based on technology from ARM and made by Qualcomm and Samsung account for most of the mobile market.

Intel has shown some recent signs of improvement in mobile, progress Krzanich is keen to build on. The company has promised major performance improvements in its new Bay Trail chip for tablets.

The Bay Trail chip is based on Intel's new Silvermont architecture, which is the most extensive overhaul of its mobile processors to date, with improved performance and lower power consumption.
