4 packaged foods that are killing you

4 packaged foods that are killing you

4 packaged foods that are killing you
Packaged foods slowly destroying you

Packaged foods help in time-management, but experts say they are killing you slowly

Mornings are a rushed affair and to make life easy, you pour a glass of milk over the cereal that you picked from the supermarket. So you think you've had a wholesome meal, right? Not really.

Medical experts say that packaged food — even the cereal that you have been assured is healthy — the quick fix for the on-the-go generation is full of chemicals and, more often than not, 'completely devoid of nutrients'.

While you may argue that you look for the reassuring words on packets — no-trans-fat, no preservatives, no monosodium glutamate (MSG), experts say that these boxes are full of other hidden ingredients that can pose serious health problems if consumed in the long-term.

Biscuits
Killer ingredients

Refined wheat flour, sugar, edible vegetable oil, milk solids, invert syrup, raising agents, salts, emulsifiers, vitamins and dough conditioner
What's hiding?
We already know the toxic effects of refined flour. However, what's scarier are the high levels of edible vegetable oil in these baked cookies, says macrobiotic nutritionist Shonali Sabherwal. "Edible vegetable oil is nothing but fat as its nutrients have been stripped. This loads up the liver, which reacts to fat that cannot be processed in the body, resulting in a fatty liver and slowing down your body," she explains. Besides, invert syrup, a mix of both glucose and fructose creates a sense of being full, and this sugar also make you crave more sugar — so while most products scream no sugar (they mean white sugar), they still add glucose, fructose, or for diabetics, chemical sweeteners, which actually have long-term effects. "Milk solids have also been linked to schizophrenia, autismdepression and multiple sclerosis (MS)," she adds.

Muesli
Killer ingredients
Invert syrup, strawberry crush (sugar, water, strawberry pulp, thickener), strawberry syrup, pineapple crush, mango crush, apple juice, concentrate, liquid glucose, soy lecithin
What's hiding?
The label says there's no added sugar, but the sugar rush you get from the various syrups added to make this a scrumptious breakfast, is perhaps why you probably have been hyperactive. If your blood sugar levels are going awry, blame it on your breakfast cereals. And the extreme sugar rush is not the only cause of worry.

Most packaged muesli contains soy lecithin, a by-product of the soybean oil production. Studies suggest some of the common sideeffects of soy lecithin — used to bind the various ingredients together — are change in weight (loss and gain), loss of appetite, occasional nausea, dizziness, vomiting and confusion. "Besides, if you have been advised by your doctor not to eat soya, you may just be consuming it unknowingly even in breads," shares eco-nutritionist Kavita Mukhi.

Ready-to-eat-meals
Killer ingredients
Dehydrated vegetables, water, edible vegetable oil, cashewnut, salt, sugar, butter, ginger paste
What's hiding?
Physician and cardiometabolic specialist, at Tardeo's Bhatia Hospital, Dr Hemant Thacker, says that ready-to-eat meals are full of dehydrated vegetables which are nutrient-empty. They are only fibre and calories. Worse, the process of reheating the vegetable kills whatever micronutrients are left in the food. He adds that it is impossible to preserve food for 12 months if they haven't added any additives or chemicals. "Those additives may be permissible for that much quantity of food, but if you keep eating it day in and day out, you are posing great danger to your kidney and liver," he says.

Packaged soups
Killer ingredients
Corn flour, edible vegetable oil, thickener, softening agent, sugar, salt, dehydrated vegetables, dried glucose syrup, edible vegetable fat, yeast extract powder, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, acidity regulator, flavour enhancer
What's hiding?
Prepare tomato soup using fresh tomatoes. Do this for a couple of days. Does the colour turn out the same every day? No. How then do the various soup manufacturers manage to keep the colour of packet soup uniform? It is thanks to the colouring agents which are sometimes disguised as 'flavour enhancers'. Dr Thacker says, "Colouring agents are toxic. They put the liver and kidney into overdrive, since these organs have to work extra hard to wash away chemicals from the system and make them safe for the body. This means that the overworked liver is unable to do its regular job — it handles the nutrients that have been absorbed by the gut from food, removes toxins from the blood, makes proteins like albumin and clotting factors, and secretes bile which helps digest fatty foods in particular — as efficiently." That apart, Sabherwal points out, hydrolyzed vegetable protein contains up to 30 per cent MSG, which is known to trigger headaches, rapid heart rate, chest pain and cause nausea. "Moreover, yeast extract powder only increases the bad bacteria (yeast) in the body. This causes problems with the pH levels and creates acidic blood condition, therefore decreasing immunity," she says
.

US agencies warn against Android malware
Google Android, the dominant mobile operating system, is by far the primary target for malware attacks.
SAN FRANCISCO: Google Android, the dominant mobile operating system, is by far the primary target for malware attacks, mostly because many users are still using older versions of the software, according to a study by the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Android was a target for 79% of all malware threats to mobile operating systems in 2012 with text messages representing about half of the malicious applications, according to the study from the government agencies, which was published by Public Intelligence website.

Google did not respond to a request for comment. DHS declined to comment.

By comparison, about 19% of malware attacks were targeted at Nokia's Symbian system and less than 1% each at Apple's iOS software, Microsoft's Windows and BlackBerry.

Android continues to be a "primary target for malware attacks due to its market share and open source architecture," said the study, which was addressed to police, fire, emergency medical and security personnel.

BlackBerry Messenger gets around, eh, Thorsten?
BlackBerry Messenger is edging ever closer to Android phones, with the massively popular mobile IM service advertised in Africa as coming soon to Samsung Galaxy phones.
Readers of BlackBerry blog CrackBerry reported seeing TV ads in a few different African countries during last night's deeply tedious Man Utd v Chelsea match. The ad briefly appeared on Samsung Ghana's YouTube account before being taken down.
Samsung Ghana's Facebook page is currently teasing users with the status, "Another messenger is coming on Samsung phones sooner than you think... what is it?"
Earlier this month Samsung Africa revealed BBM would become part of the Samsung Messenger Hub, but didn't announce a date.

Windows 8 PCs vulnerable to cyber threats, warns German agency

Windows 8 PCs vulnerable to cyber threats, warns German agency

microsoft-windows8-hong-kong-635.jpg
A German government technology agency has warned that new security technology in computers running Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system may actually make PCs more vulnerable to cyber threats, including sabotage.
Germany's Federal Office for Information Security, or BSI, said in a statement posted on its website on Wednesday that federal government agencies and critical infrastructure operators should pay particular attention to the risk.
The warning comes after weeks of public indignation in Germany over leaks related to U.S. surveillance programs. The spying scandal has become a headache for Chancellor Angela Merkel ahead of a September 22 election.
The problem, according to the BSI, is with the use of a computer chip known as the Trusted Platform Module, or TPM 2.0, which is built into Windows 8 computers. TPM 2.0 is designed to better protect PCs by interacting with a variety of security applications.
But the BSI, which provides advice on technology and security to the government as well as the public, said the joint implementation of Windows 8 and TPM 2.0 chips could lead to "a loss of control" over both the operating system and hardware, without specifying exactly how that could occur.
"As a result, new risks occur for users, especially for federal and critical infrastructure," it said.
The statement concluded: "The new mechanisms in use can also be used for sabotage by third parties. These risks need to be addressed."
Microsoft declined comment on the BSI statement.
The company provided Reuters with a statement saying that PC makers have the option to turn off TPM technology, so that customers can buy PCs with it disabled.
TPM was developed by the Trusted Computing Group, a non-profit organization backed by technology firms including IBM, Intel, Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft.
The BSI said it was working with the Trusted Computing Group and operating systems producers to find a solution.
A spokeswoman for that group declined to comment on the specific claims raised by the BSI. She said the group has provided PC makers and users with plenty of advice on best security practices to avoid any threats that they may face.

‘We prefer to grow people from within’ Flipkart

Interview of the Day: ‘We prefer to grow people from within’

Interview of the Day: ‘We prefer to grow people from within’
Aparna Ballakur, CPO, Flipkart

After a successful stint with Yahoo! what made you choose Flipkart.com as your employer? What has been the biggest advantage so far?
I chose to join Flipkart.com because of two reasons – it was an organisation that had the DNA and drive of a start-up and the scale of a mid-sized company. This meant that the company had the growth, complexity and scale that make it exciting and the systems and processes that needed to be built ground up. The closest analogy is that of fueling up/changing wheels of race car, while it is being driven at full speed!
The biggest advantage from an ‘Employer Brand’ perspective is that Flipkart.com has a fantastic consumer brand. Every person I’ve met knows Flipkart.com or is a customer of Flipkart.com. Almost everyone we hire has been a customer of Flipkart.com. This is a phenomenal differentiator because people have a positive experience with us even before they join.
What are the differentiating factors for Flipkart.com in terms of people strategy?
At Flipkart.com, focus on people is at the core of our people strategy. What this means is that when we are designing any HR process or policy, we look at how this impacts the employee. From a talent philosophy perspective, we prefer to grow people from within and choose to hire from outside only when we don’t have the person at the right level available internally.
What were your top priorities as a CPO when you joined Flipkart.com?
• Making Flipkart.com a great place to work for employees
• Attract, develop and retain outstanding talent
• Create a strong employer brand
• Build HR processes and systems that help the organisation scale
How has the management contributed to making Flipkart.com what it is now?
The founders and other leaders at Flipkart.com have always focused on hiring the best talent. This talent has helped build Flipkart.com to where we are today. Going forward, the biggest areas where HR will contribute will be in making Flipkart.com a great place to work, attracting, developing and retaining outstanding talent and creating a strong employer brand.
According to you, which one is more critical – skills or attitude?
For experienced candidates, we look at a balance of core competencies for the job and alignment with our values. For freshers, we hire for aptitude, ability to learn and alignment with our values.
What are the top 3 skills required to be a part of Flipkart.com?
We have a very dynamic environment. Every candidate needs to be extremely self-driven, have good problem solving skills and the ability to learn quickly.
What is your talent retention strategy?
People join Flipkart.com.com to build and create. There are very few organisations where people at all levels get this opportunity. This is super exciting for people. Also, as a fast growing organisation, people’s role and responsibilities expand exponentially. Since freedom and flexibility are high, an employee’s on the job learning is 2-3 times higher than what they would get in any other company. This helps us attract and retain exceptional talent.
Which roles are you currently offering to candidates?
For our technology team, we are currently hiring software engineers and technical architects.
In retail, we recruit people at all levels with category management experience. In addition, we are also hiring for senior leadership positions in planning & operations, operations excellence, supply chain, marketing and finance and HR.
Your agenda for 2013 will be…
It would be hiring outstanding talent, leadership development and of course, employee engagement.

Red meat – to eat or not to eat?

Research claimed that women who cut down onred meat are likely to suffer from anxiety and depression. We explore...

According to a study by the Deakin University, Australia, women who cut down on red meat are likely to suffer twice as much from anxiety and depression. The study showed more than 1,000 women completely switching to protein such as chicken and fish are not as healthy as they are supposed to be. Felice Jacka from the university says, "We had originally thought that red meat might not be good for mental health, as studies from other countries had found that the consumption of red meat to be associated with physical health risks — but eventually it turned out to be important."

Wellness experts are of the opinion that eating a moderate amount of lean red meat, which is roughly about three to four small, palm-sized pieces a week, would be important for overall health and would help women fight depression and anxiety. Red meat contains high level of nutrients including Omega-3 fatty acids which are crucial for mental as well as physical health. Dr Jivesh Shetty, nutrition expert, says, "Red meat has protein that satiates your hunger and keeps you happy. Red meat is also a source of Vitamin B which makes you more energetic."

Though red meat is good for your health, stick to lean-cut meat to avoid excessive fat consumption and heart issues. Make sure you exercise enough to utilise excessive calorie/ protein intake say experts.

Dr Namita Nanal, nutritionist, says, "Red meat is an excellent source of protein. It is rich in iron with good bio-availability which helps in the development and well-being of the mind. But make sure to not consume preserved meats like ham, bacon, salami as they are high in their fat content and are often held responsible for chronic conditions like cancers."

Fitness experts also suggest to not pairing meat with whole grains as they lack in fibre. You should ideally consume red meat only twice a week.

Samsung Galaxy S5 may come with 16MP camera: Report

Samsung Galaxy S5 may come with 16MP camera: Report

Samsung Galaxy S5 may come with 16MP camera: Report
A South Korean news website has reported that the upcoming Galaxy S5 will have a 16MP camera with optical image stabilization.

NEW DELHI: As the launch of Samsung's Galaxy Note III flagship phablet nears, the tech grapevine seems to have turned their attention to the company's other flagship smartphone Galaxy S4. Speculations have already started about the next-generation of Galaxy S4, most likely to be called Galaxy S5. A South Korean news website has reported that the upcoming Galaxy S5 will have a 16MP camera with optical image stabilization. This will be an upgrade from the 13MP camera module used in the Galaxy S4 and widely expected to also feature in the upcoming Galaxy Note III.

However, the report also says that the Galaxy Note III will not have optical image stabilization feature, contrary to popular rumours. The only Samsung phone to have this feature currently is the Galaxy S4 zoom, which is a cross between an Androidphone and a 16MP camera.

Samsung has also applied for patent of a metal-bodied design, which is rumoured to debut with the Galaxy S5. This handset is also said to have a flexible and shatterproof screen; a prototype of this screen was also showcased by the manufacturer earlier this year.

Currently, Nokia Lumia 1020, Lumia 925, Lumia 920, HTC One and LG G2 are the only phones that have optical image stabilization feature, which helps produce blur-free photos. The upcoming Sony Xperia Z1 (codenamed Honami) is also said to come with this feature.

A report by The Korea Economic Daily has said that the Galaxy Note III will be capable of recording movie-hall-quality 4K videos. Sony Xperia Z1 is also said to debut with this functionality. Both handsets are expected to be unveiled on September 4, the first day of IFA 2013 in Berlin

Facebook and Google must obey Indian laws, says court

Facebook and Google must obey Indian laws, says court

google-cups-635.jpg
The Delhi High Court Friday said that social networking site Facebook Inc and search engine Google Inc are bound by the rules of this country and cannot flout the law just because they are foreign companies.
A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Vibhu Bakhru also directed the two companies to display on their websites the name and contact details of their grievance officers.
"We direct Google Inc and Facebook Inc to display the name of grievance officer on their respective sites. We also direct other intermediaries that the compliance (of the rules) be done in two weeks," the court said.
It said the Information Technology (Intermediaries) Rules mandate that all social networking sites have to publish the name of grievance officer and their contact details.
"Just because you are a foreign company, you cannot flout the law. Like us, you are bound by the rule of law of this country," said the court, also asking the central government to take steps to ensure that the social networking sites comply with the rules.
The bench also asked the central government to file its response on the allegations of petitioner that Delhi Police, Indian Railways and others have created accounts on social networking sites despite government departments being barred from doing so under the law.
The petitioner submitted that government departments like Delhi Police and the Indian Railways are not entitled to create accounts on social networking sites.
The court was hearing the PIL filed by former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader K.N. Govindacharya through his advocate Virag Gupta alleging that the websites have no mechanism for protection of children from online abuse.
The PIL has said that children below 18 years are entering an agreement with the social networking sites to open accounts which is against the Indian Majority Act, the Indian Contract Act and also the Information and Technology Act.
The plea has also sought recovery of taxes from the websites on their income from operations in India.
