‘We prefer to grow people from within’ Flipkart

Interview of the Day: ‘We prefer to grow people from within’

Interview of the Day: ‘We prefer to grow people from within’
Aparna Ballakur, CPO, Flipkart

After a successful stint with Yahoo! what made you choose Flipkart.com as your employer? What has been the biggest advantage so far?
I chose to join Flipkart.com because of two reasons – it was an organisation that had the DNA and drive of a start-up and the scale of a mid-sized company. This meant that the company had the growth, complexity and scale that make it exciting and the systems and processes that needed to be built ground up. The closest analogy is that of fueling up/changing wheels of race car, while it is being driven at full speed!
The biggest advantage from an ‘Employer Brand’ perspective is that Flipkart.com has a fantastic consumer brand. Every person I’ve met knows Flipkart.com or is a customer of Flipkart.com. Almost everyone we hire has been a customer of Flipkart.com. This is a phenomenal differentiator because people have a positive experience with us even before they join.
What are the differentiating factors for Flipkart.com in terms of people strategy?
At Flipkart.com, focus on people is at the core of our people strategy. What this means is that when we are designing any HR process or policy, we look at how this impacts the employee. From a talent philosophy perspective, we prefer to grow people from within and choose to hire from outside only when we don’t have the person at the right level available internally.
What were your top priorities as a CPO when you joined Flipkart.com?
• Making Flipkart.com a great place to work for employees
• Attract, develop and retain outstanding talent
• Create a strong employer brand
• Build HR processes and systems that help the organisation scale
How has the management contributed to making Flipkart.com what it is now?
The founders and other leaders at Flipkart.com have always focused on hiring the best talent. This talent has helped build Flipkart.com to where we are today. Going forward, the biggest areas where HR will contribute will be in making Flipkart.com a great place to work, attracting, developing and retaining outstanding talent and creating a strong employer brand.
According to you, which one is more critical – skills or attitude?
For experienced candidates, we look at a balance of core competencies for the job and alignment with our values. For freshers, we hire for aptitude, ability to learn and alignment with our values.
What are the top 3 skills required to be a part of Flipkart.com?
We have a very dynamic environment. Every candidate needs to be extremely self-driven, have good problem solving skills and the ability to learn quickly.
What is your talent retention strategy?
People join Flipkart.com.com to build and create. There are very few organisations where people at all levels get this opportunity. This is super exciting for people. Also, as a fast growing organisation, people’s role and responsibilities expand exponentially. Since freedom and flexibility are high, an employee’s on the job learning is 2-3 times higher than what they would get in any other company. This helps us attract and retain exceptional talent.
Which roles are you currently offering to candidates?
For our technology team, we are currently hiring software engineers and technical architects.
In retail, we recruit people at all levels with category management experience. In addition, we are also hiring for senior leadership positions in planning & operations, operations excellence, supply chain, marketing and finance and HR.
Your agenda for 2013 will be…
It would be hiring outstanding talent, leadership development and of course, employee engagement.

Research claimed that women who cut down onred meat are likely to suffer from anxiety and depression. We explore...

According to a study by the Deakin University, Australia, women who cut down on red meat are likely to suffer twice as much from anxiety and depression. The study showed more than 1,000 women completely switching to protein such as chicken and fish are not as healthy as they are supposed to be. Felice Jacka from the university says, "We had originally thought that red meat might not be good for mental health, as studies from other countries had found that the consumption of red meat to be associated with physical health risks — but eventually it turned out to be important."

Wellness experts are of the opinion that eating a moderate amount of lean red meat, which is roughly about three to four small, palm-sized pieces a week, would be important for overall health and would help women fight depression and anxiety. Red meat contains high level of nutrients including Omega-3 fatty acids which are crucial for mental as well as physical health. Dr Jivesh Shetty, nutrition expert, says, "Red meat has protein that satiates your hunger and keeps you happy. Red meat is also a source of Vitamin B which makes you more energetic."

Though red meat is good for your health, stick to lean-cut meat to avoid excessive fat consumption and heart issues. Make sure you exercise enough to utilise excessive calorie/ protein intake say experts.

Dr Namita Nanal, nutritionist, says, "Red meat is an excellent source of protein. It is rich in iron with good bio-availability which helps in the development and well-being of the mind. But make sure to not consume preserved meats like ham, bacon, salami as they are high in their fat content and are often held responsible for chronic conditions like cancers."

Fitness experts also suggest to not pairing meat with whole grains as they lack in fibre. You should ideally consume red meat only twice a week.

Samsung Galaxy S5 may come with 16MP camera: Report

Samsung Galaxy S5 may come with 16MP camera: Report

Samsung Galaxy S5 may come with 16MP camera: Report
A South Korean news website has reported that the upcoming Galaxy S5 will have a 16MP camera with optical image stabilization.

NEW DELHI: As the launch of Samsung's Galaxy Note III flagship phablet nears, the tech grapevine seems to have turned their attention to the company's other flagship smartphone Galaxy S4. Speculations have already started about the next-generation of Galaxy S4, most likely to be called Galaxy S5. A South Korean news website has reported that the upcoming Galaxy S5 will have a 16MP camera with optical image stabilization. This will be an upgrade from the 13MP camera module used in the Galaxy S4 and widely expected to also feature in the upcoming Galaxy Note III.

However, the report also says that the Galaxy Note III will not have optical image stabilization feature, contrary to popular rumours. The only Samsung phone to have this feature currently is the Galaxy S4 zoom, which is a cross between an Androidphone and a 16MP camera.

Samsung has also applied for patent of a metal-bodied design, which is rumoured to debut with the Galaxy S5. This handset is also said to have a flexible and shatterproof screen; a prototype of this screen was also showcased by the manufacturer earlier this year.

Currently, Nokia Lumia 1020, Lumia 925, Lumia 920, HTC One and LG G2 are the only phones that have optical image stabilization feature, which helps produce blur-free photos. The upcoming Sony Xperia Z1 (codenamed Honami) is also said to come with this feature.

A report by The Korea Economic Daily has said that the Galaxy Note III will be capable of recording movie-hall-quality 4K videos. Sony Xperia Z1 is also said to debut with this functionality. Both handsets are expected to be unveiled on September 4, the first day of IFA 2013 in Berlin

Facebook and Google must obey Indian laws, says court

The Delhi High Court Friday said that social networking site Facebook Inc and search engine Google Inc are bound by the rules of this country and cannot flout the law just because they are foreign companies.
A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Vibhu Bakhru also directed the two companies to display on their websites the name and contact details of their grievance officers.
"We direct Google Inc and Facebook Inc to display the name of grievance officer on their respective sites. We also direct other intermediaries that the compliance (of the rules) be done in two weeks," the court said.
It said the Information Technology (Intermediaries) Rules mandate that all social networking sites have to publish the name of grievance officer and their contact details.
"Just because you are a foreign company, you cannot flout the law. Like us, you are bound by the rule of law of this country," said the court, also asking the central government to take steps to ensure that the social networking sites comply with the rules.
The bench also asked the central government to file its response on the allegations of petitioner that Delhi Police, Indian Railways and others have created accounts on social networking sites despite government departments being barred from doing so under the law.
The petitioner submitted that government departments like Delhi Police and the Indian Railways are not entitled to create accounts on social networking sites.
The court was hearing the PIL filed by former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader K.N. Govindacharya through his advocate Virag Gupta alleging that the websites have no mechanism for protection of children from online abuse.
The PIL has said that children below 18 years are entering an agreement with the social networking sites to open accounts which is against the Indian Majority Act, the Indian Contract Act and also the Information and Technology Act.
The plea has also sought recovery of taxes from the websites on their income from operations in India.

‘Real estate industry pays higher than any other industry’

‘Real estate industry pays higher than any other industry’

‘Real estate industry pays higher than any other industry’

The Indian real estate industry is growing at a notable speed, but still struggling to get an ‘industry’ tag. The reason for which many believe is the fact that most real estate companies are family-run businesses and lack corporate professionalism. Thus making it difficult for people to survive and excel in such a set-up.  So, what are the skills that can help you to make a successful career in the real estate industry?
“Keeping  in mind the rapid developments in the industry, skills such as good construction knowledge in terms of faster constructions, best practices, method and technologies, space management technologies, human and material optimisation technologies are required for people in construction. Good communication skill will be an added advantage, especially for sales & marketing professionals,” said Ashok Kumar Jaiswal, vice chairman, GCJ Group during a “High-Tea” session, a dedicated chat platform on TimesJobs.com for candidates to ask career related queries from experts.
Jaiswal advised senior professionals, in the real estate industry, to get ready to take on more challenges and responsibilities, learn man and team management and continuously upgrade their knowledge to move up the ladder.
According to him, finance, sales and marketing and technical functions will be the most in-demand profiles in the real estate industry in 2013.
Highlighting the salary trends in real estate industry, he mentioned that compensation is directly proportional to micro skills required in the industry and the real estate industry actually pay at par or higher than any other industry in India. “And, the work pressure is also less compared to IT, Telecom and the FMCG industry.”
During the session, Jaiswal affirmed that there are opportunities available for freshers in the industry. And, it is advisable for freshers to start their innings with a basic job, understand the industry and stick with a company for longer duration to learn the tricks of the trade.
In his view, the success and survival mantra of the real estate industry is continuous skill development and awareness about new technologies, a good knowledge of target audience, good communication and a sound knowledge of human behavior.

‘10 per cent of the workforce will be flexible workers by 2025’

Interview of the Day: ‘10 per cent of the workforce will be flexible workers by 2025’

Interview of the Day: ‘10 per cent of the workforce will be flexible workers by 2025’
Rituparna Chakraborty, Vice President, Indian Staffing Federation

What is the scenario of flexible jobs in India? What is the global trend?
Flexi staffing is evolving in India. India now boasts of one of the largest flexi staffing workforce across the world, just behind China and USA. However, the labor laws of India have failed to keep pace with the fast expansion of this particular segment of the workforce, which is creating a number of problems for the employment service providers in this industry.
Owing to the economic uncertainty in more developed country flexi-staffing has slowed down in these parts of the world. However, four of the BRICS nations – China, India, South Africa and Brazil come in the top 5 positions in flexi staffing market size in terms of number of workers and is growing at a rapid pace. In India the industry currently employs as many as 1.3 million organised flexi-workers, and in term of employment size is already one of the largest across the world. This is projected to touch 10% of the organised workforce in the country by 2025. On the other hand if we consider international trends, the ratio of total flexi staff to total workforce in 2010 was highest in China (11.9%), South Africa (7.1%) and Australia and Cambodia (2.7% each).
How critical is educational qualification for flexi jobs?
Educational qualification is important depending upon the nature of work especially in sectors like IT, Pharma or engineering. Given the present scenario where decent employment opportunity for people with limited education is scarce, flexi staffing industry becomes an important employment avenue across the world for such people by enabling them to enter the job market, gain valuable experience and have career growth. The general graduates had the largest share (54%) holding flexi jobs, followed by higher secondary certificate (17%), secondary certificate (9%) and diploma holders (3%). Flexi staffing industry in India has high potential to create significant job opportunities for those with average or low academic background.
How can flexi jobs help to boost career opportunities of job-seekers?
Worldwide flexi staffing is viewed, and is acting as a spring-board for first-time job seekers. The freshers are hugely benefited as they get an opportunity to work for major brands on short-term projects and gain experience, which is difficult to crack otherwise. Flexi jobs can help them to shape and mould their careers in a way they want. This industry is an important avenue of employment for job seekers with graduate degree in general streams (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Commerce), lower qualifications, youth who are just out of college, with minimal work experience or even college drop outs. Utilising the work experience gained while working in flexi jobs to their advantage, they enhance their skill profile and increase their chances of being absorbed into the regular workforce.
What are the key challenges for the employer and also for the job-seeker who is exploring the area of flexible staffing?
The biggest challenge is that this sector is over-regulated and under-supervised. Apart from this, there is a huge shortage of skill prevailing in the industry. To be successful, staffing firms need to attract and retain external talent who possess the skills and the experience to meet clients’ staffing needs. Arranging for a suitably qualified candidate in the face of a talent crunch and intensive competition over limited talent poses significant challenges and risks to its business model.  On the other hand candidates who are seeking for flexi jobs need to be extra careful as there are large numbers of unorganised players who often tend to operate beyond the ambit of labour laws which can pose a threat to their career.
How do you foresee the future of flexible staffing in India? Which industries are most active in this area today and who all will be the future leaders?
Flexi staffing definitely has a future in India, and staffing agencies are likely to be the ‘transition agencies’. One of the areas which require immediate consideration is reforming the existing labour law system in India to bring it more in tune with the unique ‘tripartite’ feature of the flexi staffing industry. Considering that deploying flexi staff increases flexibility enabling allocation of staff as per changing requirements, companies across traditional sectors such as Retail, Telecom, Hospitality, Pharma, Manufacturing, and Agriculture are increasingly shifting to the flexi staffing model. The size of India’s Retail sector, one of the major sources of demand for flexi staff in India, is currently estimated at around US$ 450 billion and is expected to grow at 10-12% per annum. Given this positive future outlook, the sector is expected to witness a strong demand for flexi staff.

Yahoo has confirmed that it has bought image search specialty startup IQ Engines to add the company's technology to its Flickr photo service.

SAN FRANCISCO: Yahoo has confirmed that it has bought image search specialty startup IQ Engines to add the company's technology to itsFlickr photo service.
"IQ Engines is joining the Flickr team at Yahoo," the startup said in a message at its website.
"As longtime Flickr fans and fellow photography enthusiasts, we look forward to working on improving photo organization and search for the community."
IQ Engines is known for software that analyzes, sorts, and categorizes images using techniques including facial recognition.
In May, Yahoo unveiled a dusted-off design of its Flickr photo platform with chief executive Marissa Mayer saying her goal was to make the online service "awesome again."
Sunnyvale, California-based Yahoo has been on a buying spree since Mayer became chief last year with a mission to revive the withering Internet pioneer.
The list of more than 20 acquisitions includes Qwiki, a New York operation behind an application that converts video and pictures on iPhones into sharable movie clips complete with music soundtracks.
Yahoo in June completed a billion-dollar deal taking over the popular blogging platform Tumblr, a move aimed at bringing more youthful users into the company's orbit.
Mayer's plan for reviving Yahoo's fortunes includes making priorities of mobile devices, video, personalized digital content, and elevating the company's popularity outside the United States.
Yahoo shares were boosted last week by a survey showed the struggling Internet giant topped a survey for US Web visitors for the first time since 2011.
In late afternoon trading Monday, Yahoo was trading down fractionally at $27.97.
The comScore survey showed Yahoo edged past Google with 195.6 million unique US Web visitors. It was the first time Yahoo was on top since May 2011. The figures exclude Yahoo's newly acquired Tumblr blog sites. gc/r

Facebook launches Shared Albums feature
Facebook has begun letting members collaborate on shared online photo albums at the leading social network.
SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook on Monday began letting members collaborate on shared online photo albums at the leading social network. The Shared Album feature was to be introduced slowly, first becoming available to a small group of English-language users before gradually spreading across the social network.

"A shared album is an album that multiple people can upload photos to," Facebook said in an online post explaining the new feature.

"When you make an album shared, you can add your friends as contributors," the post continued. "This allows them to add, view and edit photos in the album."

Previously, Facebook members could only add photos to their own online albums at the social network.

The new feature, inspired by feedback from Facebook users, is intended to let friends or family members collaborate on photo albums memorializing shared events or occasions.

Facebook members can invite as many as 50 friends to contribute digital photos to online albums.

Privacy settings allow sharing of albums to be limited to those who contribute or opened to friends of contributors or the public, according to Facebook.

I've never been a numbers man, says Ashwin

I've never been a numbers man, says Ashwin

I've never been a numbers man, says Ashwin
In an exclusive chat, off-spinner R Ashwin spoke about his plans and his expectations from the coming season.

CHENNAI: There's a gruelling season ahead andR Ashwin has started preparing for it. He is leading the Tamil Nadu XI in the Buchi Babu invitational tournament. When congratulated for another five-wicket haul in the quarterfinals, the tall off-spinner laughed: "Not bad, what do you say?"

But Ashwin knows this is nothing more than an appetizer before the real action begins with theChampions League in September. It will be followed by the home ODI series against Australia and then the big one, the South Africa series away.

In an exclusive chat, Ashwin spoke about his plans and his expectations from the coming season. Excerpts:

How was the month-long break after the tri-series in West Indies? Were you completely away from cricket?

It was a much-needed break and I spent some quality time with the family. It's been just a couple of weeks that I am back on the field, trying to get some playing time before the real action starts. But yes, in this break, I did watch a bit of Ashes. Jimmy Anderson was quitefantastic, and so was Graeme Swann.

Do you try to pick up any aspect of Swann's bowling?

I have a lot of respect for Swann. He is a great bowler and he has been for a while and has done a great job for his country. But we are different bowlers and I prefer working on my strengths.

You have 92 wickets from 16 Tests and can break Erapalli Prasanna's record of being the quickest to reach the 100-mark (in 20 Tests) among Indians. Your thoughts on that record...

I have never been a numbers man. It's not my aim for the season to break that record, my aim is to bowl to the best of my potential. If in the process, the record happens, yes, I will be happy.

You bowled the last over in the Champions Trophy final and defended 15 runs. Is that the most important over that you have bowled so far in your career?

Maybe, but I know that it wouldn't be my last. Yes, it was a great challenge and I am happy that we got over the line. But I would relish such a challenge if it comes my way in the future.

In the series against Australia Down Under in 2011-12, the returns weren't exactly great for you. Do you think South Africa will be different. How important is it for you to prove to people that you're as good a bowler abroad as you are in India?

Yes, 10 wickets from three Tests that I played in Australia didn't meet my expectations. But as you know, cricket is more about the situation, how the match is placed at that point of time...And if you ask me about South Africa now, I would say it's a little too early, there are three months still to go. Right now, I would like to do well in the Champions League T20 for CSK and then look ahead.

Your expectations from the Champions League?

We have been a wonderful bunch at CSK. With the auctions this year, I don't know how many more games we will be playing together. So the Champions League is a great platform for all of us to celebrate what we have been doing so well for a while and win the tournament.

In your absence in Zimbabwe, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra did a good job. Being the No. 1 spinner of the team, what are your thoughts?

They are quality cricketers and it's good to see that they are all performing. Jadeja has done well in the recent past and I have a lot of respect for Mishy. He is a good leg-spinner, has been around for a while, and I hope we all do well together.

You have also become a specialist in the slips.

Nothing of that sort, I field where I am asked to. Yes, I have stood in the slips of late and the catches are coming my way. It doesn't mean I am uncomfortable fielding anywhere else.

You have always been serious about your batting?

I am. Right now, I am working on hitting the ball a fair distance. It's important for a lower middle-order batsman to do so in tight situations in limited-overs cricket and it's an area that I am looking to improve
