According to experts, careers in the Capital Market (CM) can be extremely rewarding. “When people are talking about Capital Markets, they are essentially talking about equities and fixed income markets. The broader term, however, is Financial Market which comprise of equities, bonds, currencies, commodities, andstructured products.
In order to identify the roles and profiles offered in the Capital Market, it’s necessary to classify this segment. CM is classified into two broad areas, namely primary and secondary market
Primary Market: Roles offered are into issue management/merchant banking.
Secondary Market: Roles offered are into trading, sales and research.
Roles offered and market players
  • Primary Market: Edelweiss, ICICI Securities, Motilal Oswal, CitiBank, Deutsche Bank
  • Secondary Market (trading and sales roles): Angel Broking, India Infoline, IIFL, HDFC Securities
  • Pure Research/Advisory Firms: This category can be further divided into fundamental and technical research; roles offered are into fundamental analyst and technical analyst.
  • Wealth Management/Private Banking: Roles offered are into financial advisors, investment counselors, and financial planners. Key market players are IIFL Private Wealth, Private Banks and MNC Banks
  • Asset Management Companies/Mutual Fund Houses: Roles offered are into trading and sales. Key market players are HDFC Mutual Fund, Reliance Mutual Fund, UTI Mutual Fund, Axis Mutual Fund
“Given this landscape, it’s evident that there are a lot of career opportunities. Depending on your skills and interests, you can get into firms involved in primary market or secondary market space, or if you want to do pure research, you can also get into pure research firms, as well,” stated H. Jaishankar, director, Finitiatives Learning India Pvt. Ltd.
Most of the roles offered, however, are customer facing. “85 per cent of the jobs that are available will be into sales, 15 per cent into research, and only 5 per cent into trading,” confirms Jai.
Adding to this, he says, “For every one trader, these firms will recruit 20 sales people; which mean career scope into sales is huge.”
However, just like the market, career options are also volatile. If the business grows, firms will recruit, if it doesn’t then there will be lesser requirement.

  • Issue management/Merchant banking: MBAs/CAs
  • Research: MBAs/CAs, Engineers
  • Sales: Graduates
