There can be multiple reasons to be unhappy about your job; but it’s important to identify things which actually work well in the chosen career. Experts are of the opinion that there are ways one can evaluate if he/she is in the right career or not.
According to Aditya Singhal, CEO, IMLjeans.com, “There are various reasons for people to continue in a particular job, even if they are not satisfied with it. For some it might be money, for some it can be a certain level of position and some are simply the contributor to the set of people who are continuously competing. But what matter the most is given the least significance i.e. job satisfaction.”
There are ways to assess satisfaction at workplace. Uday Mathew, head-Human Resource, Delta Corp Ltd stated that if you feel proud of being associated with the brand you work for, it shows that you are happy with your job. While brand name could be one criterion to know whether you are in the right job, there are other substantial factors which play a much larger role.
Here are 6 ways to assess and identify if you are in the right career:
  • Look forward to going to work: This co-relates with job satisfaction, having an environment that is challenging and career growth. When you have all of these, there is a high probability that you look forward to the following Monday and work longer over the weekends.
  • Work and output leads to visible results: If you like your job, you will normally put in more concentrated effort leading to quicker and better results, not just for the company, but also for your personal development.
  • Salary makes no sense: Your work is so enjoyable to you that you really don’t feel dissatisfied if you are paid less or don’t get big raises or bonuses. One can see this openly in areas of creative development but it also holds true for most other fields.
  • Key result area: Does your KRA define your personality? For argument sake, if you are task oriented person, then probably being in any department will be fruitful, however if you are not good with numbers, being into finance will be chaotic.
  • Personal growth: Self-evaluation is one of the most important factors to know you are in the right career. The role and profile you are working in has to equip you better understanding of your domain. If your self-evaluation concludes that your domain knowledge has propagated you to higher level, then you can be rest assured of being in the right boat.
  • Inter-personal relations: A stressful work environment can be eased by spending good quality time with your colleagues, may be over a cup of coffee or during lunch. Hence it’s important to build a healthy circle.
