Apple announces sales of 9 million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c units on launch weekend
Apple has announced that it has sold a record-breaking nine million new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models, just three days after the launch of the new generation of iPhone devices on September 20.
However, Apple has not given a device or region-specific breakup of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c device sales. It's worth pointing out that pre-orders for the iPhone 5c started on September 13, and so this number is also inclusive of iPhone 5c pre-orders.
Contrast this to iPhone 5's first weekend sales of five million units in 2012 and the iPhone 4S' sales of four million units in 2011. These sales numbers did not include China, which is a major market. Very importantly, to better the iPhone 5s and 5c sales numbers in perspective, note that this year's numbers also include the Chinese market. China was included in the first phase of the iPhone rollout for the first time, ever.
Apple has also revealed that more than 200 million iOS devices are now running the completely redesigned iOS 7, making it the fastest software upgrade in history. Apple recently announced it expects to sell 700 million iOS devices by next month.
Both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c are available in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, the UK and the US.
Apple admits that demand for the iPhone 5s has exceeded the initial supply, and many online orders are scheduled to be shipped in the coming weeks.
"This is our best iPhone launch yet--more than nine million new iPhones sold--a new record for first weekend sales," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we've sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone's patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone."
Apple unveiled the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on September 10. The iPhone 5c sports a brand new hard-coated polycarbonate casing but features almost the same internals as the iPhone 5, including the same A6 chip, 4-inch Retina display with a resolution of 640x1136 pixels and an 8-megapixel rear camera. However, it comes with a bigger battery, a better front-facing camera and enhanced 4G/ LTE support.
The iPhone 5s also comes with a number of improvements including a new A7 chip that supports 64-bit computing, a faster graphics processor, M7 co-processor for tracking data from the different sensors of the phone, a fingerprint scanner on its Home button, and a much improved camera with support for a burst mode and slow motion video capture, in addition to a dual-LED flash.
Both iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s will ship with iOS 7, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system.
