DURBAN: Barry Richards features in Don Bradman's best ever Test XI. He is one of those South African legends who couldn't express himself on the international circuit due to the apartheid regime. Still, in the four Test matches that he played for South Africa in the early 1970s, he averages a staggering 72.57.

South African cricket pundits often say that he was their best batsman before Jacques Kallis. Richards has played against Gary Sobers on the county circuit, he has seen Kallis grow into the greatest all-rounder of the modern generation and follows Indian cricket with a lot of intent. During a conversation with TOI on a grey December afternoon, Richards touched upon all these issues and other topics.

Excerpts:

Has the Indian Test performance come as a pleasant surprise to you?

It has for sure. I am very happy with the way they have adapted to the conditions after the struggle of the ODI series. That's the hallmark of a good team. It learns how to adapt to alien conditions. This team is showing that it has those qualities.

Being a batting legend yourself, what's your assessment ofCheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli?

Absolutely fantastic players! India are blessed to have such quality players. They are different, yet they have the same hunger for runs that I had seen in both Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar...These two are great additions to your side. Just that I wanted to see them in one more Test in Cape Town, it's a pity they are going home after Durban.

You mean they can be as good as Dravid and Tendulkar?

It's always difficult to fill the void left by legends, but they are definitely on the right track. But when such legendary players go, a team is bound to feel their absence for a while...South Africa will feel the pinch now that Jacques Kallis is gone.

Was it the right time for Kallis to go?

It's his decision, we have to accept that...He must have felt that he has lost the desire to carry on with the grind of Test cricket, that's why he decided to quit.

Critics are saying Kallis retired because his feet were not moving against the fast bowlers and he didn't want to take a chance against Mitchell Johnson in the next series?

Let the critics say what they want to ...They had said this before about Kallis and he had come back to score a century. If his feet were not moving, he could always work on that and even inJohannesburg in the second innings, he was batting pretty well...What is important is the desire to play and I think he lost that.

Is it a sensible decision to keep the 2015 World Cup options open?

It's difficult to say at the moment but knowing Kallis, he will put in all the hard work that is required to make the World Cup team...If he thinks winning the World Cup is an unfulfilled dream for him, he will try his best to ensure that he leaves cricket contended.

You have played against Sir Gary...How do you compare Kallis and Sir Gary?

I never compare eras, everything is different, it's like trying to compare apples and oranges...Sir Gary was a magnificent all-rounder, the best of his time, and so is Kallis. They will be remembered as greats in their own rights
.

Samsung starts mass producing Galaxy S5's 5.25-inch QHD AMOLED display: Report

Samsung starts mass producing Galaxy S5's 5.25-inch QHD AMOLED display: ReportSAMSUNG-mobile_logo.jpg

As we are approaching the end of 2013, Samsung's alleged 2014 flagship smartphone; the Galaxy S5 is hitting the rumour mill on a regular basis. The latest buzz about Samsung's next flagship reveals that it would sport a 5.25-inch QHD (Quad HD) AMOLED display and that it has entered mass production.
Sammobile cites a Korean publication and claims that the display for alleged Galaxy S5 would comprise diamond pixel arrangement, which the company has reportedly used on Samsung's 2013 flagship smartphone, Galaxy S4 and recently unveiled Galaxy Note 3. The report suggests that the new diamond pixel arrangement would offer enhanced sharpness and pixel density.
Further, the Galaxy S5's screen resolution is said to be 1440x2560 pixels, with the pixel density to be 560ppi, much in-line with our earlier reports. Not too long ago, a GFXBench listing had revealed a device codenamed Samsung SM-G900S sporting a screen resolution of 1440x2560 pixels (2K).
Recent reports have already suggested that the South Korean manufacturer has plans to release two versions of the alleged Galaxy S5. As per the report, there would be two variants of the Galaxy S5: a premium variant which would sport a metal chassis and a flexible OLED, and a variant which will come with the usual plastic body, as found on other Galaxy smartphones.
Rumoured specifications of the alleged Galaxy S5 include a 64-bit Exynos chipset or a Snapdragon chipset; 3GB of RAM, a 16-megapixel camera, a 4000mAh battery and Android 4.4 KitKat with TouchWiz UI on top.
Samsung has also been rumoured to equip the alleged Galaxy S5 with an eye-scanning sensor. Samsung's expected next flagship smartphone (the Galaxy S5) will probably be the first device to pack such a feature.
Some reports have indicated that Samsung may announce the Galaxy S5 as early as January, in a bid to overcome 'disappointing' Galaxy S4 sales.

Edward Snowden says future generations will have no concept of privacy

Edward Snowden says future generations will have no concept of privacyedward-snowden-635.jpg

Former U.S. National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, who revealed details of electronic surveillance by American and British spy services, warned of the dangers posed by a loss of privacy in a message broadcast to Britain on Christmas Day.
In a two-minute video recorded in Moscow, where Snowden has been granted temporary asylum, he spoke of concerns over surveillance and appeared to draw comparison with the dystopian tale "1984" which described a fictional state which operates widespread surveillance of its citizens.
"Great Britain's George Orwell warned us of the danger of this kind of information. The types of collection in the book - microphones and video cameras, TVs that watch us are nothing compared to what we have available today."
"We have sensors in our pockets that track us everywhere we go. Think about what this means for the privacy of the average person," he said.
"A child born today will grow up with no conception of privacy at all," said Snowden. "They'll never know what it means to have a private moment to themselves, an unrecorded, unanalysed thought. And that's a problem because privacy matters, privacy is what allows us to determine who we are and who we want to be."
The "Alternative Christmas Message", broadcast annually on Britain's Channel 4 television since 1993, mimics the format of the yearly address to the nation by Queen Elizabeth.
Previous participants have included then President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2008 and popular cartoon characters Marge and Lisa Simpson in 2004.
On Tuesday, Snowden - who disclosed thousands of confidential documents - said in an interview published in the Washington Post that he had achieved what he set out to do.
"For me, in terms of personal satisfaction, the mission's already accomplished," he said.
Snowden left his NSA post in Hawaii in May and went public with his first revelations from Hong Kong a few weeks later.
In June, he left for Russia and stayed at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport for nearly six weeks until the Kremlin granted him temporary one-year asylum.
The United States has revoked his passport and demanded he be sent home to face charges for stealing secrets.
Earlier this month there were signs of thawing attitudes when Richard Ledgett - a top NSA official who leads a task force at the agency responding to the leaks - left open the option for Snowden to return to the United States in an amnesty.
"It's worth having a conversation about," he told CBS.
"I would need assurances that the remainder of the data could be secured and my bar for those assurances would be very high," Ledgett said. Senior officials in the Obama administration remain opposed to such a move.
Last week a White House-appointed panel proposed curbs on some key NSA surveillance operations, recommending limits on a programme to collect records of billions of telephone calls, and new tests before Washington spies on foreign leaders.
"The conversation occurring today will determine the amount of trust we can place both in the technology that surrounds us and the government that regulates it," Snowden said in the Christmas address.
"Together we can find a better balance, end mass surveillance and remind the government that if it really wants to know how we feel, asking is always cheaper than spying."

The NaMo Store' opens, to sell merchandise inspired by Narendra Modi online

The NaMo Store' opens, to sell merchandise inspired by Narendra Modi onlinenamo-online-store-635.jpg

A new online store dubbed 'The NaMo Store' is now selling merchandise inspired by Narendra Modi, the BJP's prime ministerial candidate.
The NaMo Store includes products like T-shirts; stationary material including desk organisers (paperweight, reminder pad, pen-stand and notebooks), and pen-drives. According to Live Mint, there are plans to launch physical stores in major cities and that the first brick and mortar store would be in Ahmedabad.
Live Mint cites a team member of the online store, who said, "The NaMo Store will also be launching their own retail stores across different cities in India for wider reach in near future. The stores will be opening in major cities in India."
The online store is from Take India Beyond Merchandising Pvt. Ltd. which describes itself as a "merchandising brand that goes beyond mere profits". Notably, the T-shirts available on The NaMo Store sport slogans, logos and images of Narendra Modi.
In November, a Narendra Modi-inspired game, Modi Run was launched on Android for free. The gameplay of Modi Run is based on the classic Mario series, not the Temple Run series as indicated by the name; here Modi's character is seen beating obstacles and collecting diamonds at various stages. Interestingly, the developer has named the stages after Indian states.
We have also seen Narendra Modi-inspired smartphones that were launched in September this year.
On Wednesday, the Congress party announced that it would create a 'cyber-army' to combat BJP's onslaught on social media. Senior Congress leader, Ahmed Patel confirmed the news, saying, "We will be creating our cyber army to counter the BJP's onslaught on social media which has become important in the run-up to the 2014 general elections."

Samsung SC-03F Tizen smartphone reportedly spotted in FCC listingtizen-samsung-sc03f-fcc-spotted-635.jpg

Samsung has been making headlines with rumours of its first Tizen smartphone for a while. Now, a Samsung Tizen smartphone with model number SC-03F has been spotted on a FCC listing, and is believed to be bound for Japanese carrier, NTT DoCoMo.
According to Tizen Indonesia, who first spotted the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) listing of the alleged Samsung SC-03F, the device comes with similar design to the company's 2013 Android flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S4. However, it suggests that the alleged Samsung SC-03F has a sleeker profile, compared to the Galaxy S4. The site also reveals that the rumoured Samsung SC-03F is powered by a Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon chipset clocked at 2.3GHz. Notably, the same chipset powers the Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3 and recently unveiled Galaxy J.
The radio frequency bands allegedly supported by the spotted Samsung SC-03F model include 850/1900MHz GSM, WCDMA 850, while connectivity options include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 (Low Energy). As of now, not many details about the innards of the device have been revealed.
In addition, Sammobile claims that the Japanese carrier, NTT DoCoMo will be the first mobile carrier to sell a Tizen smartphone and also reveals that Samsung might unveil the yet-to-be-named Tizen smartphone at an event on February 23.
An earlier report suggested that Samsung would showcase its commercial devices based on Tizen OS at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014.
In November, Samsung's yet-to-be-announced GT-I8800 Redwood Tizen smartphone was spotted in benchmarks. The latest version of Tizen (version 3.0), the Linux-based open source operating system which is backed by Intel and Samsung, was also released at the Tizen developer Summit in November

Five Ways To Become A Better Listener At Workplace

Five Ways To Become A Better Listener At Workplace

Five Ways To Become A Better Listener At Workplace
Listening is the most abused process in personal and corporate life, says Sameer Dixit, CLO at Allied Blenders and Distillers.
The art of listening is often thought of as one of the most under rated virtues in the corporate world as professionals try to outdo each other and relying on talking more to get ahead. ET shows how one can become a better listener.
Develop Respect and Empathy
Listening is the most abused process in personal and corporate life, says Sameer Dixit, chief learning officer at Allied Blenders and Distillers. He suggests developing and working on behavioral characteristics like treating others with respect and empathising, which can help improve learning habits. “Empathy enables you to listen to others with lot of care, compassion and openness which further engages people mutually,” he says.
Focus on Postures, Make Eye Contact
Dixit says a relaxed demeanour is important in a conversation. “Maintaining eye contact and relaxed postures are important non-verbal cues that will convey that you are interested in hearing the other person,” he says.
Solicit Feedback
Swati Sharma, an IT manager, regularly sought feedback from a colleague on improving her conversation styles and listening habits when she realised she had a tendency to intervene too often in conversations. For her, this was a good cue for self-improvement.
Avoid Immediate Reactions
Dixit says it is important to not react immeadiately or aggressively in the middle of conversations. “It is important to observe and absorb things instead of reacting impulsively which may portray someone as being defensive or judgemental,” he says.
Expand your Network

To overcome her listening deficit, Sharma reached out to a wider group of people than before, and found that it gave her a fresh perspective on how she should listen in more often than she did.

Healthcare Sector To Focus On Retaining Existing Talent In 2014

Healthcare Sector To Focus On Retaining Existing Talent In 2014

Healthcare Sector To Focus On Retaining Existing Talent In 2014
Apeksha Kaushik, TimesJobs.com Bureau
Healthcare has been one of the top performing sectors during 2013, in terms of hiring. The sector fared better than other key industries. It reported an average annual growth of 2 per cent during 2013. Experts believe that the industry will continue to be a key employment generator in the future.
In a quick chat with TimesJobs.com Jacob Jacob, chief people officer, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited, shares the key reason behind the growth in demand for talent and future outlook of the Healthcare sector.
Three key recruitment drivers for healthcare sector in 2013
·         Trend of quality accreditation: The process has increased the demand for healthcare professionals, preferably with experience in accredited hospitals
·         Adoption of new specialties in existing setups: For example, adoption of oncology and cardiology specialties by hospitals to expand clinical offerings
·         Growth in business: Due to business expansion of existing players and increasing competition from new entrants into the Indian Healthcare market
Key challenges faced by the sector in 2013
·         Availability of key talent
·         On-boarding professionals from established sectors such as, manufacturing, IT and FMCG, who carry huge expectations in terms of their role, organisation structure, work environment and compensation
·         Retaining talent, especially in the bigger cities
2014 recruitment scenario
With increasing competition from existing and new healthcare players, “prevention is better than cure” will be the mantra for healthcare HR managers next year.  Hence, retaining existing talent through innovative engagement programs will be the flavor of 2014.
Profiles that will be in demand in 2014
Profiles such as doctors, staff nurses with cardiothoracic and ICU experience would be in demand in 2014. Technicians/ technologists in cardiac care and nuclear medicine will continue to be in great demand next year.
Rise in demand for other support functions
Joydeep DasGupta, healthcare management consultant and author of ‘Hospital Administration and Management – A Comprehensive Guide’, predicted in the TimesJobs.com bi-annual RecruiteX report that some important employment avenues are expected to be created in non-medical administrative processes. Profiles such as healthcare management analyst, patient care co-coordinator, quality administrator, facility administrator and finance administrator would be in demand in 2014.
In conclusion

Industry experts stated that aging populations will continue to drive demand for Healthcare in times ahead, thus, boosting the demand for talent across various profiles and positions in the sector. Although, finding relevant talent and required skills sets still remains a challenge for the sector and could pose a serious impediment to the overall projected recruitment scenario, fear experts.

Interview Of The Day: ‘Good Corporate Governance Ensures Success Of Business And Its People, In The Long Run’

Interview Of The Day: ‘Good Corporate Governance Ensures Success Of Business And Its People, In The Long Run’
Interview Of The Day: ‘Good Corporate Governance Ensures Success Of Business And Its People, In The Long Run’
Seema Bangia, head-HR, Mahindra Defence Systems Ltd
Why is a culture of corporate governance important?
It is extremely important; as any culture binds people or employees to a common vision and expectations of any organisation. Corporate governance not only guides employees to drive towards that common goal, but also affects all its stakeholders including customers, vendors and society, as a whole. It gives a direction and creates an image about an organisation. A well-crafted framework of roles and responsibilities goes a long way in ensuring growth of the organisation and its people. Clarity about the vision and mission of the company provides unambiguous and clear-cut directions to employees and leaders alike, resulting in a flawless work process system. The system of corporate governance should be such that there are no malpractices and it is obligatory for everyone to abide by the organisational code of conduct.
What are the key challenges associated with instilling an effective corporate governance plan?
The single and foremost challenge is it’s “execution”.  It is very simple to craft a policy or a guideline.  However, one needs to spend more effort in ensuring that all stakeholders understand that.  It needs to be hard-wired into the DNA of organisation’s culture. An organisation needs to create awareness on a day-to-day basis and refresher sessions should be conducted with staff to keep them updated on any change in the company policies. Also, it is primary for the manager and leaders to ‘practice what they preach’. Until and unless this will happen, any sort of governance policy will not have any relevance.
What are the probable solutions to the challenges mentioned above?
A regular awareness, walk the talk by the leadership team, creating a culture by imbibing the true essence of this policy, could be some of the probable solutions. The people in the organisation need to know and understand that there are no shortcuts and one has to follow proper procedures and go through relevant and stipulated channels to get the work done.
Who are the key stakeholders in this? What is the role of business leaders in ensuring transparency in the organisation, across board?
Stakeholders are all the people/organisations who are directly or indirectly associated with it; including employees, shareholders, vendors, customer, society and community. As I mentioned above that “walk the talk” by leadership team can go a long way in ensuring its true sense is achieved.
What is the role of technology in ensuring transparency?

If all the processes are online and visible to everyone concerned, technology can really support this endeavour.  ERP modules play a very significant role here.  However, technology is only a tool to ensure process execution is transparent.  More than that, it’s the attitude and intent that can drive this transparency.

5 Steps to a flat tummy in 7 days

5 Steps to a flat tummy in 7 days

5 Steps to a flat tummy in 7 days
Get a flat tummy in one week (Thinkstock photos/Getty Images)

You've been missing your routine at the gymvery often thanks to your busy schedule (or plain laziness) and suddenly you realize that in one week you have to attend a wedding.

You want to wear your favourite saree or figure-hugging dress but are worried about your flabby stomach bulging out. Well, you still have a last option. While you cannot reduce fat, you can lose belly fat by decreasing your total body fat percentage. And you don't have to completely alter your daily habits to get a flat stomach within 7 days!

Step one

If you want to build muscle and burn fat at the same time, you have to perform circuit training, three days per week. How can you achieve this? Indulge in full body exercises like lunges, push-ups, and pull-ups, for one set of 15 repetitions. Don't forget to follow every exercise with one minute of jumping rope. You should be able to burn around 500 to 600 calories per workout.

Step two

You have to work on your abdominal muscles three times in the week. Crunches and leg raises for three sets of 20 repetitions should be done. Also, do planks by holding your body in a push-up position on your elbows for 30 to 60 seconds for four sets.

Step three

The kind of food you will eat in this period is vital in bringing about any change. Natural foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads and pastas, chicken, beef, fish and low fat dairy should replace processed foods full of sugar.

Step four

To minimize water retention, lower your sodium intake. This means you need to avoid salt. You can flavour your food with other herbs and spices instead.

Step five

Stressing and anxiety can cause the over-production of a certain hormone called cortisol, which encourages weight gain about the belly area. So try to keep your cool!
