Samsung employees cover iPhone line in New York

Samsung employees cover iPhone line in New York
A crew of cameramen and videographers working for Samsung Broadcast Center hit the Apple retail outlet at Fifth Avenue.

NEW DELHI: When the iPhone 5 launched in 2012, Samsung's mobile division released a video mocking Apple fanboys for waiting in line for days to get their hands on a phone that was smaller than its Galaxy S III and had fewer features. Though funny, the advertisement failed to make much of an impact as iPhone 5 became the fastest selling smartphone, with first weekend sales touching 5 million.

This time too the company made its presence felt, though in a very different manner - by covering the lines of people at an Apple Store in New York. A crew of cameramen and videographers working for Samsung Broadcast Center hit the Apple retail outlet at Fifth Avenue, Manhattan and asked questions related to why Apple launches attract such a following.

Interestingly, the Samsung Broadcast crew did not ask questions from the people waiting in line, but posed queries to reporters present there. Some of the questions they asked were "Is the crowd more excited or less than previous years?" and "Is the line shorter or longer this year than last?" In effect, the Samsung team was trying to gauge whether Apple fans were getting tired of the company's launches or remain as staunchly loyal as in the past.

A Samsung Broadcast producer, on the condition of anonymity, told technology news website CNET that they are covering the iPhone line out of curiousity.

However, a Samsung Broadcast PR manager tried to downplay the coverage, saying that the broadcast team was in New York for an interview and not the Apple event. He also said that the crew has no relation to Samsung Electronics or the smartphone division.

Apple has announced its weekend sales for the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, which together topped nine million units. This is the biggest figure for any smartphone till date, though the company has not revealed individual breakdown of sales for the two handsets.

Android 4.4 KitKat images surface online
Newly leaked images allegedly of Android's latest version 4.4 KitKat show the OS running on a device.

NEW DELHI: Many smartphone users are eagerly awaiting the next version of Google's Android OS officially called KitKat. Since the company announced Android 4.4 KitKat, there have been speculations on the features and the UI that the new OS will bring in. Now 9to5Google has leaked images which it claims provide first look of the new OS.

As per 9to5Google, the alleged screenshots provided by a user show a revamped phone dialer and messaging apps on KitKat. The phone dialler appears to sport a lighter colour scheme in comparison to the dark one in Jelly Bean. There is also a new keyboard design and the status bar too seems to have lighter colour scheme for the icons, which seems to be varying depending on the application that is in use that time.

The messaging app too seems to have undergone a change with the icon on the main menu resembling a Google+ icon. The main app has seen its controls get shifted to the top right instead of the bottom setup that is there in the current Android version.

Tech junkies are speculating that there will be significant changes in the 4.4 version. However, the alleged screenshots don't show any functionality changes.

Android 4.4 Kitkat is expected to be released in October along with Nexus 5. Rumours also suggest that the updated version of Nexus 10 too would sport the new OS.

Fixing scam: Sharad Pawar wants ruthless action

Fixing scam: Sharad Pawar wants ruthless action

Fixing scam: Sharad Pawar wants ruthless action
Sharad Pawar hinted that he would contest the next month's election for the president of the Mumbai Cricket Association.

NEW DELHI: Union agriculture minister and former ICC and BCCI president Sharad Pawar on Monday said the faith of cricket lovers has been shaken due to the spot-fixing incidents in the IPL matches and sought "ruthless action" against the guilty who brought a bad name to the game.

Although he expressed satisfaction that some action has been taken against certain players by imposing life ban on them, he, during a conversation with the TOI, stressed that there was a need to send strong message not only to the players but also to the cricket administrators. The minister, however, preferred not to take any name.

Pawar also hinted that he would contest the next month's election for the president of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), a post that he had held for a number of years before moving to the BCCI as its chief and eventually to the ICC.

But, he claimed, if he would contest, it would be for the sake of cricket as he wanted to do more for the cricket lovers by creating additional infrastructure.

The hint that he is throwing his hat in the MCA ring comes at a time when there has also been a strong buzz about the possibility of Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan as being one of the contestants. The name of yet another politician - BJP's Gopinath Munde - is also doing the rounds.

Although sources dismissed the possibility of Chavan as a possible candidate in the October election citing many rules of the MCA, Pawar preferred not to touch the issue.

Without going into who could be the contender for the post, Pawar said that the city during his tenure as the MCA president had seen lot of infrastructural development and therefore people wanted him to be there again.

"I was there for 10 years as a president. In my regime, we have constructed basic infrastructure at the Bandra Kurla club at the cost of nearly Rs 100 crore...Two major clubs had been set up with investment of about Rs 200 to 250 crore. The Wankhede stadium was totally renovated. We have constructed office for the MCA and BCCI", he said.

Pawar emphasized that many people have been telling him that Mumbai needs two-three more grounds. "After Wankhede, not a single thing was added. So, I am just thinking whether I should again serve the institutions which have given me tremendous support in the area of cricket", said Pawar.

While Pawar, always a man of few words, may not talk about it, the possible impact of his MCA foray on BCCI boardroom in these turbulent times can not be overstated. Pawar's return to cricket administration will not be music to present BCCI president N Srinivasan's camp.

Srinivasan has been waging a grim battle to survive in his chair and keep complete control of the board ever as the fallout of the IPL fixing scam threatens to singe him too. In this scenario, the resourceful and wily Pawar, who is not exactly enamoured of Srinivasan, can only make things more difficult for the latter.

Android malware affecting pre-Jelly Bean devices in Indian cyberspace

Android malware affecting pre-Jelly Bean devices in Indian cyberspace

smartphone-work-635.jpg

A potentially damaging virus, which steals SMSes and personal details of an Android-enabled gadget-user, has been detected in Indian cyberspace and Internet security sleuths have asked mobile phone and tablet users to exercise caution while operating. The malware is affecting all the versions of Android prior to version 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean).
"It has been observed that a critical vulnerability exists in Android which could allow attackers to inject malicious code into legitimate applications which makes it possible to change an application's code without affecting the cryptographic signature of the application, essentially allowing a malicious author to trick the Android device into believing that the crafted application is unchanged," the Computer Emergency Response Team-India (CeRT-In) said in its latest advisory to Android users in the country.
The malicious programme, the advisory said, is so damaging that it could be used for stealing personal information like email addresses, IMEI numbers, SMSes and installed applications.
"It could also send SMS or make calls from infected devices without user consent," the sleuths of the national cyber security centre said.
"An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by placing other files with same name into an application package along with the legitimate files. The Android package verification occurs against the first file during installation. Thus, the crafted .APK passes the verification process and installs the second file. However, at runtime, other malicious file gets executed," the advisory said.
The cyber police have also suggested some countermeasures.
"Check for the permissions required by an application before installing, exercise caution while visiting untrusted sites for clicking links, run a full system scan through a device with a mobile security solution or mobile anti-virus solution, do not download and install applications from untrusted sources and download applications only from trusted sources, reputed application markets and Google play store," the security agency said.

Google reveals new logo and redesigned navigation bar

Google reveals new logo and redesigned navigation bar

google-new-navigation-menu.jpg

It looks like Google is getting rid of the black navigation bar it places on its sites and introducing a new menu which looks like the Chrome app launcher placed upside down.

According to Google Plus Daily, the drop down launcher will offer nine popular Google services, namely Google+, Search, YouTube, Maps, Play, News, Gmail, Drive and Calendar in a 3x3 grid each represented by the icon and name of the service. The launcher also has a More button at the bottom clicking on which will make eight other Google services -Translate, Books, Offers, Wallet, Shopping, Blogger, Finance and Photos - appear.

Update: Google has officially confirmed the changes coming to the navigation bar via a blog post and also given a glimpse at its new logo. The company also confirmed that both the changes will be rolling out worldwide gradually.
google_logo_change.jpgEarlier, a screenshot of the new navigation bar was posted by Google+ Help community member, Gerson Castaneda, following which Google+ Community Manager, Justine Rivero acknowledged that the new menu will roll out over the next few weeks.

As a screenshot in the report points out, a message saying "Welcome to the new way to find your favorite Google products. Click the grid to have a look" will be displayed under the app launcher button.

The new launcher is visually appealing and features different Google services as apps rather than offering them as hyperlinks placed on the top of the page in an omnipresent black navigation bar. It's also a much more minimalistic way of putting a link to all Google services while the user is accessing one of them.

However, one of the disadvantages of this launcher is that a lot of users might not realise it's even there as the app grid is hidden till the user clicks on the launcher button.

It would also be the first time that even YouTube will display the Google navigation bar. The video sharing service currently doesn't feature the black navigation bar seen on other Google services.

As per Google Plus Daily, the new navigation launcher has been in testing for almost half a year with Google Operating system, a Google focused third-party website receiving the first screenshots of the launcher in February.

However, it's worth pointing out that Google had tried to implement a similar menu called Google menu, replacing the black Google bar, in November 2011. But the lack of positive feedback lead to its removal and Google placed all service shortcuts on the black bar in February 2012.

Google makes Quickoffice app free for Android and iOS

Google makes Quickoffice app free for Android and iOS

quickoffice-free.jpg

Google has made Quickoffice mobile app free for both Android and iOS users, following Apple's announcement to offer its iWork apps, Pages, Numbers and Keynote free to people who buy new iOS devices.

The Quickoffice suite allows viewing, editing and creation of Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents, and allows users to store them on Google Drive, Google's cloud storage solution.

It's interesting to note that after acquiring Quickoffice in June 2012, Google had made the iPad version of the app free for its Google Apps for Business customers in December. Earlier this year, it extended the same perk to Android users and made the iPad app compatible with the iPhone.

However, starting today all iOS and Android users will be able to download and use Quickoffice, free of charge. Google has also announced that if users sign in to their Google Account from the new Quickoffice app for Android or iOS by September 26, 2013, they'll get an extra 10GB of Google Drive storage for two years, which will be added to their account in the next few weeks.

It's interesting to see mobile Office suites taking each other on. With the announcement of the new iPhones, Apple had made its iWork suite which also lets users create, edit and view presentations, documents and spreadsheets, free for new users. The apps are offered when users activate their new iPhones or iPads running iOS 7. The iWork apps are also integrated with iCloud, Apple's own cloud storage and sync solution.

Ironically, Microsoft's Office apps, which were launched for both Android and iPhone are offered as a free download but an Office 365 subscription is required to use them. The apps also offer the ability to sync documents to Microsoft's Skydrive cloud service. It's worth pointing out that the apps don't work on the Apple iPad or Android tablets in the interest of Windows tablets which showcase Office as one of their key USPs.

Android 4.4 KitKat to release in October: Nestle

Android 4.4 KitKat to release in October: Nestle

android-4.4-kitkat-1-big.jpg

It looks like Android's latest iteration will see the light of day in October, as Nestle has revealed the first news about the launch of Android 4.4 KitKat on Facebook. While replying to a user who asked "When Android 4.4 KitKat will be available", Nestle's German KitKat Facebook handle replied "Android 4.4 KitKat is available from October" (Google translation).
While this might not be an official confirmation about Android 4.4 KitKat's release, at least the German Nestle Facebook handle was kind enough to confirm that it is coming next month.
Earlier this month, the search engine giant which has been known for nicknaming its Android mobile operating systems for smartphones and tablets after desserts, had for the first time announced a candy brand name for the version 4.4. However, Google made no mention of when the Android 4.4 update would rollout.
The search giant has been in news ever since it announced the next iteration of its mobile operating system, with the Nexus 4 successor, which is expected to be the platform lead device for Android 4.4 jelly, making multiple appearances on the Internet via FCC filing and image leaks.
In the official promotional video of the KitKat announcement released by Google, a person was seen holding up a phone which came with a Nexus logo at the back, very identical to the Nexus 7 (2013). The back of the mysterious phone had a matte finish and included a large camera lens which has not been seen on any Nexus device, yet.
Recently, the alleged Nexus 4 successor was again spotted in new live images and a video. The purported pre-production unit of the next Nexus smartphone revealed the front and rear panels. It is rumoured that the next Nexus smartphone would run Android 4.4 KitKat OS and both are expected to be launched at the same event.

iOS 7 bug lets intruders bypass iPhone's passcode, get access to Photos app

iOS 7 bug lets intruders bypass iPhone's passcode, get access to Photos app

Apple%20iOS%207%20-%20635.jpg

Following the release of iOS 7, a new security hole has been discovered that lets users bypass the passcode on any iOS device and gain access to the Photos app and subsequently to the user's email and social networking accounts.

A user named Jose Rodriguez has posted a video on YouTube demonstrating the security hack. Control center, the new settings and utility app shortcuts drawer that's included in iOS 7 can be used to bypass the passcode lock that allows users to protect their iPhones using a 4 digit code.

All that someone needs to do is to fire up the control center by swiping up from the bottom of the iPhone's lock screen and open the Camera app. Since the phone is locked the intruders would not be able to see anything when they open the Photos app through it. However, they can then launch the Clock app from the control center and hold the iPhone's power/ screen lock button till they see Slide to power off button at the top and Cancel button at the bottom. The intruders then simply need to tap on the Cancel button and quickly press the iPhone's Home button twice to fire up the multitasking menu, where the Camera app would appear (the other open apps would also appear but won't be accessible).

The intruders would be able to access the Photos app through the Camera app and get access to the user's Messages, Mail, Twitter, Facebook and Flickr accounts via the sharing menu.

The vulnerability was first reported by Forbes which was also able to reproduce the hack on an iPhone 5 and an iPad. We tried to reproduce the hack on an iPhone 5 running iOS 7, but were not successful.

Interestingly, it's very easy to prevent your iPhone from this hack. You can simply go to the Settings app, tap on Control Center and turn off 'Access on Lock Screen' option.

Apple has acknowledged the vulnerability and has said that it will deliver a fix in a future update. An Apple spokesperson told Forbes, " Apple takes security very seriously and we're aware of this issue. We'll deliver a fix in a future software update."

Description: BPO companies like Aegis,WNS Global partner with colleges & universities to hire skilled talent
Business process outsourcing firms are beginning to hire directly from colleges and universities, a practice pioneered and perfected by country’s information technology services industry, which is now slowing down such campus recruitment.
The more organised hiring is being prompted by the changing nature of work, which is rising in complexity and value, calling for more regular supply of talent with specific skills. However, unlike IT services companies which hired mostly from engineering colleges, BPOs are casting their net wider to include medical, commerce and law graduates.
“We are identifying specific campuses that can give us dedicated supply of qualified people we need,” said Keshav R Murugesh, group chief executive officer at WNS Global Services, which employs 25,000 people and has revenues of about $500 million (Rs 3,050 crore). “The potential right now is immense and it is only growing.”
“Companies are looking to offer more domain-specific, higher value service such as data analytics or riskmodelling,” said Sangeetha Gupta, senior vice-president of Nasscom, about the transformation underway in the sector. In fact, industry body Nasscom is trying to rechristen the sector as business process management or BPM instead of earlier BPO, which tends to get equated with lowend work.

However, BPOs are not expected to recruit at the same scale as IT sector, which employs nearly 30 lakh professionals but has cut down hiring now because of moderating pace of growth and greater automation. “These are specialised postitions and only those who can hit the ground running will be hired,” said Rituparna Chakraborty, co-founder and senior vice-president, TeamLease, which offers staffing services to BPOs.
As a result companies are looking to work with colleges and campuses around curriculum and course development so that students have relevant skills by the time they graduate. “Students are upbeat about the sector with good career prospects and are keen to learn relevant skills,” said Sanjeev Bansal, director, Amity Business School. In future, a certification is also being planned as a necessary requirement to be hired in the industry.
Industry experts however caution that campus hiring, especially from business schools and other specialised educational instituted pose the risk of higher costs for the BPOs, whose growth has so far been driven by labor cost arbitrage between it can offer to clients in markets such as US and Europe.
