Forbes ’30 Under 30′ Acheivers’ List: Four Prodigies Who Share An India Connection
There is no short-cut to success, say youngsters from the recently-released Forbes list of ’30 Under 30′, a recognition conferred on the brightest stars across 15 fields under the age of 30. Rica Bhattacharyya, Anumeha Chaturvedi and Shreya Biswas spoke to four of the 450 prodigies who share an India connection.

Sayamindu Dasgupta, 29
PLACE OF BIRTH | KOLKATA
OCCUPATION | PhD student at MIT Media Lab
Dasgupta was recognised for his contribution to the Scratch project — a programming language and online community for children. The main inspiration for his research and work has been Seymour Papert, one of the pioneers of artificial intelligence, as well as an inventor of the Logo programming language. “Reading his work changed how I think about education,” he says. Scratch is a research project from the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, and is used by millions of children all over the world to create and share games, interactive animations, stories, simulations and artwork. A BTech from West Bengal University of Technology and a masters in media arts and sciences from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he visits India once a year. Over the past year, he has been involved in a pilot project by the Pratham Infotech Foundation, wherein Scratch was introduced in seven Mumbai schools. He attributes his success to mentors from his institutes.

A lot of Dasgupta’s learning has been informal. “It takes quite a bit of grit and resilience to pursue such a path. At the same time, I have been able to participate in communities (such as the Open Source Software community in India) that have been incredibly supportive, and I still have very close friends from these,” says Dasgupta.
Megha Parekh, 28
PLACE OF BIRTH | NEW JERSEY
OCCUPATION | VP and general counsel, Jacksonville Jaguars
Parekh traces her roots to India, with both her parents moving to the US in the 1970s. At the Florida-based American football team, she is responsible for all contractual matters, personnel development, risk management and compliance. Perhaps the biggest challenge for her is that when certain people meet her initially, they are surprised by the position she is in at her age, and tend to overlook her. However, with hard work and a professional attitude, Parekh says she has been able to gain the trust and respect of colleagues and clients.
Her word of advice to young aspiring entrepreneurs: “Work to put yourself in a position so that when a position opens up, you’re the first person that is thought of.” And, she says, they must not forget to have some fun. “Every job is, at the end of the day, just a job,” adds the graduate from Harvard College and Harvard Law School.

Parekh plans to continue to increase her knowledge and skill base. “I aim to be flexible in my specific goals and focus on overall improvement,” says Parekh, whose role model is Shad Khan, the owner of Jaguars (Jacksonville Jaguars). “His vision and work ethic shape the culture at Jaguars,” says Parekh.
Aditi Malhotra, 28
PLACE OF BIRTH | NEW YORK
OCCUPATION | Pastry chef and entrepreneur
Forbes '30 Under 30' acheivers' list: Four prodigies who share an India connection
Malhotra is the owner, founder and chocolatier of Tache Artisan Chocolate, formally known as CVLC — Christian Vautier Le Concept. Malhotra, who started Tache in September 2012, was voted as one of Forbes’ 30 under 30 game changers in Food & Wine for 2014. Coming from a long line of restaurateurs, Malhotra, a first-generation American, was born with an extraordinary appreciation for the culinary arts. Her family’s history dates back to the 1964 World’s Fair where her grandfather introduced Indian cuisine to America through Gaylord, a respected mainstay in Mumbai. Her parents are the owners and operators of Akbar, one of the first widely-accepted and successful Indian restaurants in New York City.
Needless to say, her family is her role model. “They inspire me to work harder, to work with passion and enthusiasm, and to always stay on top of my game! My father always says you can’t let the small stuff get to you, and when you own your business, the devil is in the detail,” says Malhotra, whose culinary secret, as expected, lies in her attention to detail.
Asked to share the secrets of her success with aspiring young businesspersons, Malhotra says, “Don’t be afraid to take risks, be fearless, passionate, and find something that truly belongs to you. And always do what you love.”
Sahil Lavingia, 21
PLACE OF BIRTH | NEW YORK
OCCUPATION | Founder/CEO, Gumroad
Forbes '30 Under 30' acheivers' list: Four prodigies who share an India connection
Among the youngest in the Forbes list of 30 under 30, Lavingia, a student of University of Southern California, started Gumroad (gumroad.com), a service that helps all types of creators earn a living selling what they make, directly to their audience.
His goal is to see Gumroad as a highly valuable, independent company creating hundreds of billions in economic value by enabling creators. “Building a great team is always a challenge and takes a lot of time. In general, things take more time than you’d think,” he says. For aspiring young entrepreneurs, his advice would be to “focus on building useful stuff, rather than building a ‘company’.”
“Find something that you find fun and happens to be valuable to the world. That’s the only way this whole starting a company thing is sustainable,” he says. On the Forbes recognition, Lavingia, whose parents are Indian, says, “Hopefully it exposes Gumroad to a few people that we could help, or could help us (by this, he means engineers, who he is looking for).”

5 things to eat to lose weight

5 things to eat to lose weight

5 things to eat to lose weight (Thinkstock photos/Getty Images)

Stop worrying about your weight, just eat right. Here are five tips you need to keep in mind.

Have a healthy breakfast
The cardinal rule to any weight lossprogramme is never to miss breakfast. And oatmeal, a complex carbohydrate is ideal. It is a satisfying breakfast cereal, and compared to any other grain it provides more protein per serving. The fact that it takes longer to digest and hence releases energy slowly makes it perfect because you feel full for longer. Oats also keep blood sugar and insulin levels stable, which helps prevent fat storage. Have it with skimmed milk or yogurt.

Opt for skimmed milk
Milk and its products are rich in calcium and can help keep your bones strong. Skimmed milk, low fat cheese and yogurt helps to break down fat cells.

Bean it
Foods that are high in fibre and are good sources of protein, can help you feel full for a very long time. And that, will help you control unnecessary bingeing. Protein has a very high satiety index and that is why make proteins an essential part of your meals.

Go for the grain
Grains have complex carbohydrates which during digestion release glucose slowly. Jowar, bajra and ragi etc can help in maintaining your blood sugars levels. The fibre and vitamins in them play an important role too.

Snack on nuts through the day
Stay away from fried and salted nuts but you can munch on raw, unsalted ones — almonds, and walnuts. These have essential roughage, protein, fat, minerals and micronutrient.
A handful can keep hunger at bay and provide energy

Google to kill Nexus range in 2015: Report

Google to kill Nexus range in 2015: Report
Google may be planning to discontinue its highly popular Nexus branded smartphones and tablets as early as next year.

NEW DELHI: Google may be planning to discontinue its highly popular Nexus branded smartphones and tablets as early as next year. Nexus brand has endeared itself for offering quality hardware and stock Android software at affordable prices and speculation has been rife about an upcoming 8-inch Nexus tablet hitting the market soon.

However, a new report has claimed that Google will terminate the Nexus line of smartphones and tablets next year. This information comes courtesy Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin, who has tweeted: "Nexus line by Google is over in 2015 ;) Yes - this line will be replaced by Play Edition (current name, it will be rebranded)."

Google already sells the Play Edition of devices in the US, offering devices with stock Android software without any added applications or software features. At present, the Google Experience range of devices includes Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One, Sony Xperia Z Ultra and Moto G smartphones, along with LG G Pad 8.3 tablet.

On both Nexus as well as Play Edition devices, Android updates are pushed faster than they are on other devices. While Google releases them for Nexus products, whereas respective manufacturers like Sony, HTC, Samsung, LG and Motorola are responsible for it in the case of Play Edition range.

The hardware of the Google Play Edition devices is manufactured by the companies that make the original versions of the products, namely Samsung, HTC, Sony Motorola and LG right now. Google is not involved in the hardware manufacturing process of these devices. On the other hand, the internet search titan partners with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like LG and Asus to manufacturer its Nexus devices.

While the Nexus range of devices is sold by Google as well as e-commerce sites and brick-and-mortar retailers, the Play Edition of products is only available via Google currently.

If the internet search giant does choose to discontinue the Nexus line and replace it with a Play Edition range, it will provide users with a bigger portfolio of devices to users.

However, pricing would need to be handled, as the Nexus range is priced quite low compared to devices with similar specifications. On the other hand, the Google Play Edition smartphones and tablets do not differ much from their original counterparts in terms of pricing

Yahoo reports dip in Q4 revenue, shares fall
Yahoo's latest quarterly report shows CEO Marissa Mayer is still having trouble bringing in more revenue.
SAN FRANCISCO: Yahoo's latest quarterly report shows CEO Marissa Mayer is still having trouble bringing in more revenue as online advertisers spend more money at Google and other rivals.

The fourth-quarter results serve as the latest reminder of challenges facing Yahoo. The long-slumping internet company hoped to revive its revenue growth when it lured Mayer away from Google 18 months ago.

So far, though, Yahoo revenue remains stuck in a rut. The company's earnings are rising largely because lucrative investments in Asian internet companies made before Mayer's arrival.

Yahoo earned $348 million, or 33 cents per share, a 28 percent increase from $272 million, or 23 cents per share, a year earlier.

Revenue fell 6% to $1.27 billion.

Shares fell nearly 5% after results came out.

Bendable, foldable mobile phones coming soon

Bendable, foldable mobile phones coming soon
Researchers have developed a new stretchable and transparent electrical conductor.

HOUSTON: Scientists have developed a new stretchable and transparent electrical conductor, paving way for fully foldable cell phones and TVs that can be rolled and carried.

Researchers developed the gold nanomesh electrodes with "ultra-high stretchability" that provide good electrical conductivity as well as transparency and flexibility.

The material also has potential applications for biomedical devices, said Zhifeng Ren, a physicist at the University of Houston and lead author of the research.

The researchers reported that gold nanomesh electrodes, produced by the novel grain boundary lithography, increase resistance only slightly, even at a strain of 160 per cent, or after 1,000 cycles at a strain of 50 per cent.

The nanomesh, a network of fully interconnected gold nanowires, has good electrical conductivity and transparency, and has "ultrahigh stretchability," researchers said.

Unlike silver or copper, gold nanomesh does not easily oxidise, which Ren said causes a sharp drop in electrical conductivity in silver and copper nanowires, they said.

Research associates Chuan Fei Guo said the group is the first to create a material that is transparent, stretchable and conductive, as well as the first to use grain boundary lithography in the quest to do so.

More importantly it is the first to offer a clear mechanism to produce ultrahigh stretchability, he said.

The grain boundary lithography involved a bilayer lift-off metallisation process, which included an indium oxide mask layer and a silicon oxide sacrificial layer and offers good control over the dimensions of the mesh structure.

"This is very useful to the field of foldable electronics. It is much more transportable," Guo said.

Ren noted that, although gold nanomesh is superior to other materials tested, even it broke and electrical resistance increased when it was stretched.

But he said conductivity resumed when it was returned to the original dimensions.

The findings were published in the journal Nature Communications

Apple to go beyond phones, tablets in 2014: CEO

Apple to go beyond phones, tablets in 2014: CEO

Apple to go beyond phones, tablets in 2014: CEO
The trend-setting company is losing ground to rivals that offer what Apple has stubbornly refused to make.

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple reshaped technology and society when Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone seven years ago. Now, the trend-setting company is losing ground to rivals that offer what Apple has stubbornly refused to make: smartphones with lower prices and larger screens than the iPhone.

The void in Apple's lineup is a major reason why the company's quarterly revenue may be about to fall for the first time in more than a decade, much to the dismay of investors who are worried that Apple is losing its verve and vision.

Wall Street vented its frustration after Apple reported that it sold fewer iPhones than analysts anticipated during the holiday season. Apple compounded that disappointment with a forecast raising the possibility of a slight revenue decline in the current quarter. It would be the first time that Apple's quarterly revenue has dropped from the previous year since 2003.

Apple's stock shed $44, or 8%, to close Tuesday at $506.50, marking the company's largest one-day drop in a year. The sell-off leaves the stock about 28 percent below its peak of $705.07, reached in September 2012 when Apple's leadership in smartphones and tablet computers was still generating robust revenue growth.

Since then, Apple has been relinquishing market share to SamsungElectronics Inc. and other companies that primarily make devices running Google Inc.'s Android operating system. Those competitors offer a broader selection of designs and prices than the iPhone and the iPad.

That trend is one of the reasons that Apple's revenue growth hasn't exceeded 6 percent in any of the past three quarters. By contrast, Apple's quarterly revenue was consistently increasing by at least 20 percent two years ago and even exceeded 70 percent during the 2011 holiday quarter.

Apple remains in stellar shape financially, coming off a $13 billion profit in its most recent quarter - more than all but a handful of companies make in an entire year. The Cupertino, Calif., company also is sitting on nearly $159 billion in cash.

But Apple's stock is unlikely to bounce back to its previous high unless the company's growth accelerates.

The challenges facing Apple have been most glaring in the smartphone market.

Phones in less affluent parts of the world are selling for less than $200. By comparison, iPhones sold for an average of $637 in Apple's most recent quarter. Even Apple's cheaper iPhone 5C is just $100 less than the high-end 5S.

Meanwhile, a variety of Android phones boast screens measuring 5 to 6.5 inches diagonally, while the latest iPhones are all 4 inches.

Apple's insistence on catering to the upper end of the smartphone market with only one choice of screen size is undercutting the company's growth, International Data Research analyst Ramon Llamas said.

"There is a gap where Apple is not playing, and it's clear that many users want some of these other things in a phone," Llamas said.

As a result, Apple's share of the smartphone market fell from nearly 19 percent at the end of 2012 to about 15 percent last year, according to IDC. Samsung remains the market leader with a 31 percent share at the end of last year, up a notch from 30 percent in 2012.

Apple tried to widen the iPhone's appeal with the cheaper 5C, which was essentially a recycled version of the iPhone's previous generation. To make the 5C look like something new, Apple dressed it up in a brightly colored array of plastic casings.

In Monday's conference call with analysts, Apple CEO Tim Cook made it clear that the 5C didn't sell as well as the company anticipated, though he didn't provide specifics. Cook hailed the 5S model as the star performer in the company's holiday quarter.

With the 5S leading the way, Apple sold 51 million iPhones in the fiscal first quarter. Even though that set a record for the company, it represented a letdown because analysts had projected 55 million.

Analysts suspect that many of those iPhones are being bought by repeat customers who love the mobile operating software and other services, as well as the cachet that comes with the Apple brand. Cook said Apple still attracts a "significant" number of first-time iPhone buyers.

Jobs carefully cultivated Apple's luxury image before he died in October 2011, and Cook has given no indication he will risk tainting it with an inexpensive smartphone sporting lower-quality parts.

"Our objective has always been to make the best, not the most," Cook said Monday.

He also said Apple will expand its horizons this year with new products that will push the company beyond smartphones and tablets. Most analysts expect an Internet-connectedsmartwatch and possibly a long-rumored television set that would run on the same software as the iPhone and the iPad.

Apple also is preparing to sell an iPhone with a 5-inch display screen, according to unidentified people cited in a report this month in The Wall Street Journal.

Apple declined comment Tuesday.

If an iPhone with a bigger screen is in the works, it would pose another test for the company as it tries to ensure the device retains the same high resolution and other features in earlier generations.

"There is clearly a standard that Apples has set for itself: Anything less than fantastic won't do, and no one is going to give them a pass if they don't live up to that," Llamas said
.

Apple going Samsung way? Gets patent for stylus

Apple going Samsung way? Gets patent for stylus
The iPhone maker has been granted a patent for stylus orientation detection by the US Patent and Trademark Office.
NEW DELHI: One of the distinguishing features of Samsung's Galaxy Note range of smartphones and tablets is the stylus and arch rival Apple may be looking to 'copy' it.

The iPhone maker has been granted a patent for stylus orientation detection by the US Patent and Trademark Office. The new patent describes means of detecting orientation when the stylus makes contact with surfaces like touchscreens and then calculating relative orientation between the two.

This is, however, not the first patent for a stylus that Apple has been awarded. According to a report by Patently Apple, the company already holds patent for recording the text written using the stylus, pressure and texture input, gesture recognition etc.

The focus on a stylus for mobile devices gives more credence to rumours of Apple making its first big-screen smartphone, with display measuring 5.7-inch. It is also said to be working on a 12.9-inch iPad, and a stylus may be a useful tool for professional-grade tasks.

Samsung made the stylus popular among smartphone users in 2011 with the launch of its Galaxy Note phablet. The model was a hit and was later followed up by two more phablets; the South Korean manufacturer also added tablets to its Note range.

Steve Jobs - Apple's iconic founder and former CEO - once famously dismissed the stylus as an input tool, saying that the human finger is a much more accurate medium of interacting with a touch-enabled display. Though Apple devices do not come with styluses, there is a huge market for third-party styluses - mainly for the iPad - as writing or drawing on a big screen becomes more convenient.

Google has begun letting Lego lovers build digital objects using virtual colour blocks in its Chrome web browser.
SAN FRANCISCO: Google has begun letting Lego lovers build digital objects using virtual colour blocks in its Chrome web browser and then give their creations a home in online maps of the real world.

"There's something pretty amazing about being able to piece together your ideas with just a collection of colourful bricks," Google product marketing manager Adrian Soghoian said in a blog post.

"Well, we think the creative freedom of Lego bricks shouldn't be limited to plastic bins -- which is the idea behind Build with Chrome."

The browser application was originally built as an experiment by a team in Australia, but was opened to the public on Tuesday in an apparent tie-in to The Lego Movie, due out in February.

"More than one million builders have explored the new world of Lego creations Down Under and published 66,000 builds, demonstrating the possibilities of the web as a creative canvas," Google said at its official blog in Australia.

Versions of the Build application have also been tailored for Android-powered touchscreen smartphones or tablets with high-end graphics capabilities, according to Soghoian.

HAMILTON: One is not sure what was on the team menu for dinner, but if you sawMahendra Singh Dhoni on Tuesday evening you'd have thought it was humble pie.

Indeed, the skipper looked totally distraught after the drubbing in the fourth one-dayer against New Zealand; looking ahead, he also believes that the 2015 World Cup could be a disaster if the fast bowlers don't get their act together.

"They need to push themselves because with the rule changes it is going to be quite tough," he said, shortly after the series' loss. "It wasn't about that here though; it was just bad bowling. Most of it has been short and wide and it has given them room to score freely. We have to keep it tight, but we have a pool of bowlers when it comes to talent. We have bowlers who can do well. But they have to start using their brains more and improvise. What needs to be done is bowl in one area. That is where we lack when it comes to fast bowling," he explained.

Dhoni conceded that the team has to find the men for the job quickly. "We know the spinners who will carry on till the World Cup provided there are no injuries. We are still not sure who our fast bowling choices are. Back home, we talk about pace and bounce and we get bowlers who can bowl quick. But they end up giving more runs," he pointed out.

Dhoni defended his decision to push the in form Virat Kohli up the order to open the innings too. "We had a chat with him and he was super confident. He said he wanted to open. It fitted well for us, with Jinks coming in at No. 3 and Rayudu at 4. So the strength of the side remained the same."

He refused to accept that Rahane would have been a better choice. "Initially, he came in as an opener. But we had a chat with the selectors, a few months ago, and he was termed a middle-order batsman. We have tried him and he was good in the middle-order. So we want to stick to that. T20 is a different scenario," he said

Samsung Galaxy S5 tipped to sport 32-bit SoC, fingerprint scanner, plastic body

Samsung Galaxy S5 tipped to sport 32-bit SoC, fingerprint scanner, plastic body

fingerprint-scanner-phone-635.jpg
Samsung's much-anticipated Galaxy S5 might still be made of plastic, feature a 32-bit SoC, and come with fingerprint scanner, KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts.
AppleInsider cites a research note from Ming-Chi Kuo, which claims that Samsung in an attempt to counter competition from Apple might bet on the fingerprint scanner feature for its alleged Galaxy S5 smartphone. Further Kuo expects that the South Korean manufacturer will use a fingerprint scanner built by Validity Sensors, a company now owned by touchpad maker Synaptics. However, the reporthas not shed much light on the alleged features of the fingerprint scanner on the rumoured Galaxy S5.
In addition, the analyst has also revealed that the alleged Samsung Galaxy S5 might still sport plastic casing instead of the new anticipated metallic chassis that's been previously rumoured.
Kuo has also claimed that Samsung, following its tradition for high-end smartphones, will again launch the alleged Galaxy S5 equipped with two different processors. The 'Prime' variant of the Galaxy S5 will be powered by company's own Exynos 5430 octa-core 32-bit processor, while the 'Standard' version will equip the Qualcomm's MSM8974 AC quad-core 32-bit processor, as per Kuo. If true, this would mean Samsung would not be following up on its previous promise to put a 64-bit processor in its next Galaxy flagship.
Other specifications include a 3GB of RAM for 'Prime' variant, and the 2GB of RAM for 'Standard' variant; a 16-megapixel rear camera; a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and a 2850mAh battery.
According to Kuo, the alleged 'Prime' version of the Galaxy S5 will sport a 5.2-inch WQHD (1440x2560 pixel) AMOLED display boasting of a 565ppi pixel density, while the alleged 'Standard' version is said to include a 5.2-inch full-HD AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels and a pixel density of 423ppi.
Kuo also said that the South Korean giant is not prepared to introduce the iris scanner feature in its next alleged Galaxy flagship smartphone.
Coming to the Galaxy S5's expected launch date, we point you to a recent report emphasising the conundrum Samsung's facing regarding the Galaxy S5's announcement place and date.
