Why Android smartphones consume more data

Why Android smartphones consume more data

Why Android smartphones consume more data
Androids have the biggest screens and tend to use much more data than other types of smartphones.
Android smartphones are kind of like Hummers. Reminiscent of the oversize, gas-guzzling SUV's, Androids have the biggest screens and tend to use much more data than other types of smartphones, including iPhones. And that higher data usage could rack up heftier phone bills.

So why does Android use more data? The reasons are multifold. The most obvious is that Android phones tend to have the largest screens, so they download bigger files and video with more pixels, says Chetan Sharma , a telecom analyst.

Another factor is that Android is less efficient at managing apps than Apple's iOS. For instance, multiple Android apps may be running in the background with things like location data being collected, he said.

Also, Android users typically don't upgrade their operating systems as frequently as iOS users, so their smartphones may not receive fixes improving data management, he said.

Jan Dawson, an independent telecom analyst who previously worked for Ovum, noted that the data traffic numbers may also reflect the profiles of the people who choose Android versus those who choose iPhones. People with larger Android phones are more likely to skip buying a tablet, whereas iPhone owners may be buying iPads and consuming a lot of content there.

Google ties up with Audi, GM, Honda and Hyundai to bring Android OS to cars

Google ties up with Audi, GM, Honda and Hyundai to bring Android OS to cars

car-generic-tech-4g-635.jpg
Google has entered into a partnership with the leading carmakers and a chip-making firm in order to bring its Android operating system into vehicles in 2014. Open Auto Alliance (OAA), an auto-tech group, also announced on Monday, the opening day for CES 2014, that they will support the OS' widespread use with certain tweaks.
Some of the carmakers involved in the partnership are General Motors, Audi, Honda and Hyundai whereas Nvidia will be also giving its support under-the-hood.
"The OAA is dedicated to a common platform that will drive innovation, and make technology in the car safer and more intuitive for everyone" the group announced. "Its open development model and common platform will allow automakers to more easily bring cutting-edge technology to their drivers, and create new opportunities for developers to deliver powerful experiences for drivers and passengers in a safe and scalable way."
Although the details are being kept undercover, the OAA added that Google's Android OS will arrive with certain car-specific features.
The Android-Audi tie-up came into news last month itself, reports CNET, as it was revealed that the popular carmaker would include entertainment and information systems-based on the Google's OS. However, the Android-General Motors agreement is considered to be much bigger as GM is the largest automaker around the globe. The firm is said to pair itself with the mobile OS via its native OnStar communications technology.
The OAA partnership is also considered a starting point for the implementation of the much-anticipated self-driving car technology, providing a platform for standardised computing and services. The self-driving car technology's biggest drawback is fear for driver and road safety, and to reassure consumers, the alliance said: "We have been in contact with government agencies like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Our goal is to build an experience that helps drivers get what they're looking for without disrupting their focus on the road."
As a competition to Android, Apple's iOS is also working on car electronics. Ford is also said to have a close partnership with Microsoft regarding its Sync technology.

CES 2014: Intel demos Edison, an x86 PC the size of an SD card

CES 2014: Intel demos Edison, an x86 PC the size of an SD cardIntel_Edison.jpg

Intel has shown off an experimental product that it describes as a PC the size of an SD card, at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The device called Edison is envisioned as a prototype to help drive the Internet of Things, referring to the coming wave of wearables, appliances and personal items that will have embedded sensors and persistent Internet connections to allow users to interact with them digitally. It is based on Intel's previously announced Quark SoC platform.
Edison is exactly the same size and shape as a standard SD card, contains a programmable X86-compatible processor core, NAND flash storage, and wireless connectivity via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE. It is fabricated on the company's 22-nm manufacturing process and is optimised for power-sensitive applications. Edison supports Linux amongst other operating systems, which Intel says helps developers create sophisticated user-facing applications.
Intel competes with ARM and its various licensees in an increasingly heated battle to dominate the emerging market for tiny, highly power efficient processors for a new generation of connected devices. The company announced its Quark platform at its annual developers' conference in September, and indicated that products based on it would be ready to ship by early 2015. Quark-based devices will be significantly smaller and less power-hungry than those based on the existing Atom line of microprocessors.
Intel CEO Brian Krzanich demonstrated an Edison device embedded into a baby's onesie, created by Rest Devices, a pioneer in technology-enabled parenting products including temperature sensors and sleep monitors. The Edison-enabled garment contains sensors and computing hardware, eliminating the need for an external receiver to notify parents of an infant's condition. Rest Devices also demonstrated a baby bottle warmer which can be activated remotely, automatically heating baby formula to a suitable temperature just as the baby begins to wake.
Intel also used the occasion to unveil a number of prototype wearable connected devices, including earbuds, a headset, a bracelet, and a charging "bowl" that makes it easy to keep multiple small devices charged.

How First Career Enhances A Second

How First Career Enhances A Second

How First Career Enhances A Second
What happens when the career you were born to pursue becomes the wrong career when you reach your mid-30s?

As a child in New York, I was surrounded by physicians. My grandfather was a public health doctor, my grandmother was a cardiologist, and my father was an oncologist. Starting when I was 3, I went on hospital rounds with Dad on weekends. The nurses would entertain me in the nursing station, and I’d wander into the lab, where the techs would let me look through their microscopes.
So it was no surprise when I enrolled in pre-med at Amherst College, received my M.D. at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and served my residency at the University of Minnesota, where I met my wife, Carol Grabowski, also a doctor. She’ll tell you that I was the only happy intern she had ever met. Being an intern, after all, is like being a zombie because you are so sleep deprived. And yet I enjoyed the work.
For the next 11 years, I was a doctor with a health maintenance organization in St. Paul. Gradually, though, I found the work less and less fulfilling.
I liked being a doctor, but my wife loves it. She’s a specialist in radiation oncology, and being a physician is all she has ever wanted. Medicine defined my father: When he was home, he was always reading or writing medical journal articles and books. In contrast, my profession had never defined me.
I always thought we’d be a two-physician household. But a doctor’s day is unpredictable; if a sick patient comes in, you don’t leave until he or she is taken care of. My wife and I had two small children, and we were planning a third. And the future of medicine was uncertain, and both of our incomes derived from it.
If I had been 50, I would have ignored my uncertainty and stayed in medicine. But I was in my mid-30s, and I told myself, “I can’t feel like this for 30 more years.” I was 36 when I began studying to become a certified financial planner.
When I was 38, I shifted to three days a week as a doctor and two days a week as a financial planner at Raymond James, but I learned that you can’t be a part-time doctor and still keep up with the latest in medical practice. At 40, I became a full-time planner.
I never worried about changing careers, because I assumed that success would happen quickly. Instead, it took me five years to build a book of financial-planning clients. My wife said to me: “What happened? I thought I married a doctor!”
Not only do doctors enjoy prestige and good pay, but the income is also reliable. And that’s what I was giving up. Anyone who is an M.D. will make a nice living. Doctors don’t have to hunt for patients. But as a financial planner, you have to recruit clients, and you make nothing until you have them. I have no selling skills; the only reason I succeeded is that my wife’s income enabled me to hang in there until I achieved a critical mass of clients.
More than a decade into my new career, I retained my first client who was also a physician. That was when I realized I could combine my two skills by becoming a financial planner for doctors. In August 2012, I founded my own firm, and I now work exclusively with dentists and physicians.
At first glance, medicine and financial planning don’t seem to have much in common. But they do. When you are a physician, people come to you with health problems, and you ask questions, do tests, come up with a diagnosis and treat them. As a financial planner, clients come to me with financial problems, and I ask them questions, come up with solutions and carry out a program.
The stakes are much higher when you are a doctor, though. As a financial planner, if I make a mistake, I can usually correct it. But as a doctor, if you make a mistake, a patient can be harmed or even die.
I have more respect for physicians today than when I was one myself. Helping to free my clients from worries about their finances so they can concentrate on their practice, their family and other interests is a tremendous source of satisfaction for my staff and me.
I’ve fielded many calls from people looking to switch careers and get into financial planning. I tell them two things. One, it will take longer than you expect to replace the income you’ve been making. And two, unless you have a spouse who can support your family for a while or have another way to pay the bills, consider alternative ways to enter the field – for example, by starting as a junior person in a financial planning office with a salary so you can learn the ropes.
These days, it’s not unusual for people to live and work into their 70s or even 80s. If you’re not happy with the career you’ve chosen, even if you went to graduate school for it, don’t wait to transform yourself. People ask me, “Do you miss medicine?” And I answer, “If I missed medicine, I’d still be doing it.”

What To Do If You Lose Your Job

What To Do If You Lose Your Job

What To Do If You Lose Your Job
In 2004, Agra-based Shabd Mishra was working with a leading research company as its head of sales, earning a package of Rs 7 lakh annually.
As a newly wed, he was looking forward to a bright future, when he was sacked because of structural changes in the company. “I was left with almost no money as I had deployed most of my savings for my wedding just a month previously.I tried to get another job, but most companies offered a lower salary or position, which was humiliating,” says 36-year-old Mishra. Thankfully, he could depend on his wife, a coporate lawyer, to keep the home fires burning. However, everybody may not be as lucky him.
How can you tell if you are likely to lose your job in the near future, and what can you do to safeguard yourself against such an eventuality? We spoke to a bunch of experts to help you with these dilemmas.
What to do if you lose your job
Read the writing on the wall
Financial experts explain that in most cases a pink slip doesn’t come out of the blue. Sometimes, job loss results from employee incompetence and negligence, and at others, it is because of inevitable, external circumstances, such as cost-cutting measures or a change in the company management. In either case, as Darryl Cabral, partner at Total Solutions, a Mumbai-based human resource consultancy firm, explains, there are sure to be certain tell-tale signs indicating an imminent job loss. Employees, on their part, must learn to read these signs so that they are never caught unawares.
“Not getting a salary increment or a promotion is a clear indication that the management is unhappy with the performance of the employee. So, chances are that he could be asked to leave within a short period of time,” says Cabral. Often, this is a deliberate attempt on the part of the management to anger or frustrate the employee into leaving the organisation voluntarily, thus saving it the trouble of handing out a pink slip.
A similar strategy deployed by a company is to look through the employee, making him feel invisible. “He won’t be given any work or even any feedback about his work. If you think having more work on your plate is bad, having absolutely no work is worse for the psyche of the employee,” adds Cabral.
Another tell-tale sign is being excluded from all important meetings and projects. “While other people in the team are called, the doomed employee would be deliberately kept out of the discussion. Also, he would be totally clueless regarding any important decisions in the company,” explains Gagan Adlakha, partner at Delhi-based Vyaktitva, a human resources and performance support consultancy firm.
What to do if you lose your job
Instances like a junior being promoted to do an employee’s job or the latter being asked to train a junior for his own role are red flags. “If an employee is asked to keep his junior-in-training in the loop for all job-related matters, it is a clear indication that his job is at risk,” adds Adlakha. Lastly, a lot of churning at the top level, with several seniors quitting and moving on to other companies in quick succession, is an indication that your own job may not be secure.
What to do if you lose your job
What to do in such a situation?
Human resource experts are of the opinion that a person should try and take control of the situation rather than lose his cool when threatened with a possible job loss in the near future. “The employee should try and sort out the issues with his seniors. There is always a possibility that he could be reading the signals wrong and the management may not have any plans of letting him go,” says Adlakha.
Another common mistake made by employees is to quit the job in anger. If the management has not yet told you to put in your papers, you should not do it. It is possible that only your immediate senior has problems with you, which may not matter much in terms of your overall growth prospects in the company. By quitting hastily, you would only make things easier for the disgruntled senior, not yourself.
What to do if you lose your job
How to cope with a pink slip
In the worst-case scenario, if a pink slip appears imminent, the best option for the employee is to search for a better job before quitting the present one. “You can go on leave for a few days and start searching aggressively for a better job, rather than starting the hunt after quitting. An employee’s bargaining power increases if he has a job in hand,” says Cabral. Experts also say that the company management is typically more liberal in handing over holidays to an employee while he is hunting for another placement.
Simultaneously, you need to get your finances in order. As a first step, you should start prioritising your expenses using financial planning tools. After this, assess your monthly expenses and create a contingency fund, which will take care of your day-to-day expenses for at least six months. Says Mishra: “My sudden job loss taught me the importance of a contingency fund.” Today, he is the CEO and founder of Renaissance eServices, a company generating a revenue of `8-10 crore annually. “However, I make sure that I keep some money in fixed deposits to take care of any unforeseen expenses. Besides, I maintain at least six months’ worth of my take-home salary in my bank account,” he shares. In 2008, one of his biggest clients defaulted on payments worth several crores and he was forced to sell his office to tide over the huge losses. “However, thanks to my savings, my family did not face any financial issues,” he adds.
“Though a six-month period is recommended for the contingency fund, it can be extended to around nine months if the employee falls in a highrisk job category,” says Mukund Seshadri, founderpartner, MS Ventures Financial Planners. He adds that sectors like finance, technology and media have seen tough times, so it is better for employees in these sectors to start a contingency fund right away, if they haven’t done it already.
The next step is to effect changes, if required, in one’s discretionary spending. Jayant Pai, a Mumbai-based certified financial planner, explains that while a debt repayment is unavoidable, a person can certainly make a lot of changes, however difficult, in his lifestyle spending in order to save his limited resources.
If you have an outstanding debt, be it loans or credit card dues, you will have to rejig your expenses to make sure that you continue to meet the repayment schedule. Remember that defaulting on your debt is not an option, no matter how dire your situation. If you are confident of bagging a good job within three to six months of getting sacked, you can opt to restructure your loans. You can approach your bank or financial institution and reschedule the loan by decreasing the monthly mortgage payment and increasing your loan tenure. Some banks also allow a gap of three instalments to loyal customers, who have a good repayment track record. So, make sure to check how much you can leverage your credit report to earn some breathing space.
According to Pai, the worst thing to do in the face of a pink slip is to start disposing of one’s assets in real estate or equities in panic. “This is a common mistake made by unemployed people,” he explains adding that, “Selling your investment in a hurry won’t solve your problem. If you must sell, do it when the timing is right and only to tide over emergencies, not just because you are jobless.”
How to get a new job
Being sacked is not the end of the world. According to Cabral, the employees who get pink slips can approach their previous company’s competitors for a job. “The chances of getting employment with the com peting companies are higher since they will be eager to take a person who has experience in a similar industry,” he says. The aspirant could also tap his network in the industry to circulate his resume. “You can also hire the services of a job consultant as he would have a better idea of the current market scenario. Moreover, he would be in a position to ensure that you get placed faster,” says Cabral.
Another thing to remember while looking for a fresh job is to focus on a company that is smaller than the one you were employed with. “A company that is smaller in scale than your exemployer would be happy to take you at a better position. This is because you will bring in a wealth of experience, particularly relevant to a larger set-up,” adds Cabral.
At the same time, never short-sell yourself and settle for a lower salary or position in a bigger company. “You won’t be happy with the drop in pay package and will constantly think of shifting to a bigger place. This is sure to impact your productivity,” says Cabral.

Interview Of The Day: ‘Better Career Growth, Work Place Safety, Motivate Young Talent’

Career aspirations vary between the job seekers at metros and remote locations. While the former choose money; the latter opt for career growth and money together.
What are the key challenges in attracting talent in remote locations?
One of the primary challenges is the non-availability of right technology for communication in remote areas. Without proper internet access and facilities, it gets difficult for recruiters to contact prospective candidates. Also, it is not always feasible to travel to these locations in order to conduct the recruitment process.
Another challenge that we often face is the willingness of candidates to move out of their comfort zones. Since, a lot of factors need to be taken into consideration when pursuing a job in a different city, we often see good candidates backing out as they do not wish to relocate.
Do you hire talent locally? If yes, how do you lure talent available in metros to join work at remote locations?
A large percentage of our talent is sourced locally. However, we are always on a look out for good candidates and do participate in job fairs in smaller cities. Also, it is less about luring and more about motivating them to join your company. Good career opportunities, good working environment and safety at work place are some of the important factors that motivate candidates to join an organisation. The youth today is educated and smart enough to make the right career decisions and not lose growth opportunities that come their way.
Does the career aspirations of employees working in remote areas different from their urban counterparts?
The aspirations do not differ between candidates, but the intensity of their aspirations differs for employees from very remote areas and those from the metros. For the urban youth both money and career growth matters, while for those stepping outside for the first time money is the primary reason for choosing to relocate.
How do you perceive the future of hiring in remote areas – in terms of quantity, quality and ratio of local to other local to talent beyond boundaries?
Hiring from remote areas will definitely increase as we want more fresh and diverse talent. If the hiring is right, employees from remote locations are more stable and productive employees in the long run. The fact of the matter is that a right candidate for a right job will be hired irrespective of where he is coming from.

BlackBerry appoints new head of mobile business
BlackBerry has hired Ron Louks, a former Sony Ericsson executive, to head its loss-making devices business.
Struggling smartphone maker BlackBerry has hired Ron Louks, a former Sony Ericssonexecutive, to head its loss-making devices business, a job needing a heavy dose of salesmanship to win back companies and consumers lured away by larger rivals.

Ron Louks took the position of president of devices and emerging solutions, BlackBerry said in a statement on Monday.

It said Louks was joining from OpenNMS Group, where he had served as chief executive officer. He had previously worked as head of strategy for HTC's American unit and as head of technology at Sony Ericsson, a joint venture later bought out by Sony.

BlackBerry was a smartphone pioneer, but has lost most of the market to Apple's iPhone and devices using Google's Android technology. The Canadian company has since shifted its focus from the consumer market to serving businesses, governments and other large organizations.
