Google Maps Hindi version launched
Hindi maps will be available on the new Google Maps (web interface) and on the latest Google Maps for mobile app on Android devices.
NEW DELHI: Google India has launched the Hindi version of its popular mapping and navigation app, Google Maps.
Announcing the availability of Hindi language maps via a blog post, Google informed that these maps will be available on the new Google Maps (web interface) and on the latest Google Maps for mobile app on Android devices running versions 4.3 and above.
Hindi name labels appear directly on the map for cities, localities, important roads, and other popular points of interest such as public parks and schools.
Google said the Hindi labels were created by transliterating English names to Hindi, and ensuring that the text resonates with local dialects.
In order to see the Hindi labels on Google Maps, users need to enable Hindi as their preferred language. For accessing the Hindi interface on the web version, users can change their language preference to Hindi on their Google account settings or by selecting the 'Hindi' option at the bottom of the page on the google.co.in home page. To enable Hindi on Android devices, they need to select the Hindi option in the 'Language and input' menu through phone's Settings menu.
"Part of providing people with a great map means making sure that the information we display is available in as many languages as possible. Today's release of Hindi language is our latest endeavour to bring people in India a better experience on Google Maps, and we'll continue working on providing you with most comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps possible," the blog post said
