NEW DELHI: Exactly 10 years ago today, Virender Sehwag joined the club of India's batting greats when he raced to the first triple hundred scored by an Indian in Test cricket. 

Since that day in Multan, Indian cricket has seen a sea change. And as he battles to get back into the Indian team, a wiser Sehwag doesn't mind conceding he has done little to earn a comeback and that Indian cricket should stick with fresh faces. 

"I was given a lot of chances when I was young. I used to fire in one or two instances out of 10 hits. Yet, the team management stuck with me and only then the consistency came in. The same holds for the likes of Shikhar Dhawan. He shouldn't be under pressure after a few failures. Amit Mishra is also a good bowler and now that he has got his chances, he has started performing. Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma have it in them to break my record of scoring triple hundreds. New faces should be given more time," said the 35-year-old, firm in his opinion during the launch of a junior cricket tournament initiated by the Sehwag International School. 

A survivor of the 2004 side, Yuvraj Singh is struggling in the current set-up. Sehwag was quick to rise to his former teammate's defence. "If you look at the numbers, Yuvi was the man-of-the-match only three T20s ago. He deserves a few more chances and we all know when he gets going he can turn a tournament in India's favour," he said. 

On his own form, Sehwag was startlingly honest, saying that selectors had few reasons to bring him back into the team. "I haven't scored runs, how can I expect to be recalled? But every match and every tournament is a platform for me now to make a comeback. Just like when I scored a century for MCC recently in Abu Dhabi, people started talking about me coming back." 

At this stage of his career, experience is what the swashbuckler is banking on and not leading Kings XI Punjab doesn't fluster him. 

"For the amount of top-flight cricket I have played, I don't need to worry about words like confidence and moral boosts. I had told coach Sanjay Bangar that I won't mind if I had to lead the team but if they had someone better to do the job then they should go ahead with him. And then he called up to say they had finalised George Bailey and he told me that I will still be a leader in the team. It doesn't matter to me if I am the captain or not," said Sehwag. 

In his efforts to grab the eyeballs of the selectors, the veteran's batting position has been a talking point since he decided to drop to No. 4 when playing for Delhi
.

DHAKA: Was it a change in guard at the top of BCCI which prompted the entire Indian team to turn up for the optional practice session on the eve of their Super 10 clash of the ICC World T20 on Saturday? 

Sunil Gavaskar, the new interim chief of the BCCI, has been a vehement critic of optional practice sessions and Dhoni's boys gave him no reason to complain on his first day in office. 

As promised by skipper Dhoni on Friday, the batsmen who haven't got enough chance to bat in the games, were given an extended net session. 

Apart from the main bowlers, Dhoni himself bowled a mix of medium-pacers and off-spinners at them. His dance after dismissing Yuvraj bowled was not like the one the West Indies team indulged in after beating the Aussies, but it was celebratory nevertheless. 

The game against Australia though is serious business. Probably for the first time in World Cup contests, India will go into the contest as favourites. 

The Aussies have lost two close games and barring a win by Bangladesh over Pakistan earlier in the day, they have no chance of going through. 

However, India are in no mood for philanthropy. They fielded an unchanged side in the Champions Trophy against Pakistan even though they had qualified for the semis and are likely to do the same on Sunday. 

R Ashwin was asked if there was a chance of testing the bench and he said, "I'm not so sure about that because it's pretty much like how we played the Champions Trophy. Take one game at a time. We will do what suits us to win that particular game."

The latest rumour is that the company’s first phablet will be nearly as big as Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 in size.
NEW DELHI: Apple is widely expected to launch big-screen iPhones this year and the latest rumour is that the company's first phablet will be nearly as big as Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 in size.

French website Nowhereelse has published an image leaked by a Chinese website showing the dimensions of the upcoming iPhone. The device is 150mm long and 85mm wide, according to the image. This means that the device will be almost similar in size to Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 phablet, which is 151.2mm long and 79.2mm wide.



According to the report, this iPhone's screen size is at least 5-inch. Several reports in the past too have claimed that Apple is working on smartphones with 4.7- and 5.5-inch screens, which are likely to be unveiled in September this year.

Japan Display, a major Apple supplier, unveiled a 5.5-inch display panel with 2K resolution (2560x1440p) earlier this week. This has sparked speculation that the same panel may be used in the upcoming iPhone phablet.

The jump to 2K resolution would be a big one for Apple as iPhones only support 1136x640p resolution. This panel would also mean that the next iPhone would have pixel density of 538ppi, much higher than the 326ppi of Apple's Retina display.

The other rumoured features of iPhone 6 include 10MP camera, scratch-resistant sapphire glass display, bezel-less display, solar charging, health-centric apps and faster Wi-Fi access.

On Friday, Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith said the company has decided to change its email policies.

NEW DELHI: Several days after Microsoft acknowledged that it read the personal emails of a French blogger in 2012 to catch an insider who had leaked code related to Windows, the company said that it would change email policies and would no longer read emails hosted on its servers without a warrant. 

According to a few court documents related to a case that involves former Microsoft employee Alex Kibkalo, who reportedly leaked code related to Windows, Microsoft went through the Hotmail inbox of the blogger who was in touch with Kibkalo to identify the leaker. 

In the wake of uproar and privacy concerns, Microsoft said that its "terms and conditions" for Hotmail accounts allowed it to look into the content of private emails in order to protect its intellectual property. 

On Friday, Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith said the company has decided to change its email policies. "Effective immediately, if we receive information indicating that someone is using our services to traffic in stolen intellectual or physical property from Microsoft, we will not inspect a customer's private content ourselves. Instead, we will refer the matter to law enforcement if further action is required," Smith wrote on the company's office blog. 

"While our own search was clearly within our legal rights, it seems apparent that we should rely on formal legal processes for our own investigations involving people who we suspect are stealing from us," he added. 

Incidentally, the case of snooping on the French blogger came at a time when Microsoft was running its "scroogled" campaign against Google, arguing that Google read emails of its users so that it could serve them advertisements. 

After the details of the Kibkalo case came out in public, Microsoft was criticised by Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a well-known non-profit organization that argues in favour strong privacy on the web. "The search in the Kibkalo case may have revealed criminal activity, but it was also conducted in Microsoft's self-interest, which is an exceedingly dangerous precedent. Combined with the kangaroo court potential of the company's new internal Warrants for Windows policy, Microsoft is playing with fire," said EFF. 

On Friday, Microsoft revealed it is also starting a project that will "identify, flesh out and discuss important issues (related to privacy on the web)". The company said that for discussions on the issue of privacy, the Center for Democracy and Technology has agreed to convene stakeholders and the EFF will be a key participant. 

The interesting bit here is that Google, which runs Gmail, and several other technology companies have policies similar to that of Microsoft when it comes to their own intellectual property. A few days ago Michael Arrington, founder of Techcrunch, wrote that he suspected Google snooped on his Gmail inbox to identify his sources within the company. 

Though Google denied the allegations, it is yet to follow Microsoft in changing the email policies that gives it right to go through the private emails of a user if it is probing theft of its intellectual property
.

What you see in each app is a clean and simple version of the Office ribbon with the Home, Insert and Review tabs plus extra tabs for each app.

There are already several Office apps for iOS, from the OneDrive and OneNote apps to the simplistic Office for iOS (now renamed Office Mobile); Office for iPad is a different and more impressive beast. What you get are versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint designed for iPad.

They don't have anything like all the features of Office 2013 for Windows or Office 2011 for Mac, but they do have a great touch interface that makes the features you actually get, work well with just your fingers whether you're fixing a broken formula in Excel or adding pictures to your presentation in PowerPoint or tracking changes and reviewing comments in Word.

Word, Excel and PowerPoint are free to download from the App Store but when you first install them, all you can do is view existing documents and run a presentation in PowerPoint (complete with a handy on-screen pen that lets you scribble on your slides and a virtual on-screen laser pointer when you press and hold with your finger).



You have to either buy a subscription to Office 365 Home (the individual Office license that lets you use it on up to five devices, including tablets) from the App Store or activate an existing Office 365 subscription (including the new Personal license, Office 365 University for students and the different business plans). Confusingly, to do that you need to open the free version and then tap the activation button.

When you have the right license, what you see in each app is a clean and simple version of the Office ribbon with the Home, Insert and Review tabs plus extra tabs for each app; Word has Insert, Excel has Formulas and both have a View tab that lets you turn on spelling, get a word count or hide headings and gridlines. PowerPoint has specific tabs for Transitions and Slide Show (plus and extra button to start presenting at any time (this works nicely with AirPlay). Other tabs appear when you need them, like when you select a chart, table or picture.

Rich with features
The ribbon and all the tools and controls are clear and simple and work really well with touch. This looks and feels like Office but it also looks and feels and works like a real iPad app (including dictating text into Word). Drag the handles on a photo or chart and you can move or resize it precisely; selecting a range of cells in Excel is easier than it is with a mouse on Windows and the menu for inserting and deleting cells is really helpful (once you spot it on the ribbon).



If the touch keyboard is open, controls open smaller so you see a short list of colours; with the keyboard closed, the colour list stretches down into the keyboard space. When you tap inside your document, a little context menu lets you select, copy, cut, delete, duplicate and so on, depending on what you've tapped. The Undo and Redo buttons are big and obvious, right at the top where you need them. AutoSave is on by default, although you can tap to turn it off and save by hand if you really want.



You get far more than the basics of editing documents and adding transitions to slides. Excel has everything from cell formatting to formulas - there's even a specific formula keyboard with arrow ad number keys plus common formula keys like the Sigma key. Excel also has a handy version of the quick formulas that are in the status bar on the Windows version, letting you see the sum, count, average, minimum or maximum of your selected numbers quickly. Nothing revolutionary, but implemented in a way that's a perfect match for the touch screen.

Not only can you make a chart in Excel and customize the layout, you can copy that into a PowerPoint or Word document - where you can collaborate with other people editing the file, including adding comments and tracking changes so you can see who has changed what. Word has rich text and image formatting, plus a huge list of shape, table and photo formats and you can edit headers and footers. PowerPoint has shapes and smart art.



If you use OneDrive or OneDrive for business, you can open Office documents from there, although they still start as Quick Look previews; you have to tap the Edit button to open the document in Office itself. If you open Word, PowerPoint or Excel, you can choose a file from Recent Documents (as usual that includes ones you've only worked with on other devices using the same Office account), open a file from your iPad, OneDrive, OneDrive for Business or SharePoint (you can also save new documents in all those places) or create a new document.

The selection of PowerPoint themes is reasonable, the 15 Excel templates include a project planner, marketing budget and expense report and you get 14 Word templates for brochures, flyers and resumes.



There are plenty of things you can't do in Office for iPad, like cropping images (but there are plenty of iPad tools that do that already). There are some features you'll have to know where to look for; to find and replace in Word, first you tap the search icon, then you tap the Settings gear to switch from 'Find' to 'Find and Replace' (it's worth spending some time with the Office guide hidden on the menu you get by tapping the Autosave button).

But the beauty of this being Office is that even the features you can't edit on the iPad still display and update correctly. You can't create the conditional formatting for a heat map that makes big numbers green and negative numbers red in Excel on the iPad but if you've done that in Excel on your PC or Mac the formatting displays correctly; and if you change the number in a cell, the colour-coding updates to match the new number. You can open complicated documents without worrying that you'll be losing information or messing up your formatting.



Early verdict
Even if you've moved on from Office to other iPad tools, you'll want to take a look at Office for iPad for nice touches like the custom keyboards for numbers and formulae in Excel and it's nice to see Microsoft taking advantage of hardware acceleration for things like rotating images in PowerPoint. But you'll get the most from Office for iPad if you also use Office on your Mac or PC and want to take documents with you. Since you need an Office 365 subscription to get the editing features at all, that makes sense.

Office for iPad has pixel-perfect document viewing and while you only get a selection of the Office 2013 features, they are features that make sense, implemented in ways that work beautifully on the iPad.

Motorola Mobility is banking on a strong brand recall and its online sales model for success in India.

NEW DELHI: Handset maker Motorola Mobility is banking on a strong brand recall and its online sales model for success in India, a market which it had quit in August 2012 and re-entered with Android smartphone Moto G and which could hold the key to the company's rebound globally. 

The company that will soon be owned by Lenovo has had discussions with retailers who want to sell Motorola phones in India, where the brand still has strong consumer recall, said Magnus Ahlqvist, corporate vice-president, EMEA and APAC at Motorola Mobility. 

"I have an open dialogue with many of the key players in the industry on the large format retail side and also with the operators. All of them are showing a lot of interest because they're all seeing that Motorola is a highly relevant brand for Indian consumers," said Ahlqvist. 

The company is getting a lot of interest from retailers to stock its products - Moto G and Moto X, said Ahlqvist, adding that though it may consider options in the future, it will continue with its present strategy to sell online, which is working extremely well. 

Motorola is the only handset seller in India which sells exclusively through online retailer Flipkart. It's first launch Moto G was sold out within hours of launch, prompting it to sell Moto X on the leading e-commerce portal last week, establishing a successful online-only sale model. 

According to industry insiders, Motorola has sold tens of thousands of Moto G devices, the 16 GB variant of which is priced at Rs 13,999 and the 8GB at Rs 12,499 on Flipkart, making it one of the most attractive purchases. Ahlqvist declined to share the sales figures of Moto G and Moto X, which is available for purchase priced between Rs 23,999 and Rs 25,999. 

The company was absent from India most of last year when smartphone sales exploded and cornered over 15% of the Indian mobile phone market. Indians bought over 41 million smartphones in 2013, according to research firm IDC. 

The smartphone market is expected to rise to 60 million devices in 2014, which will make up about 40% of total mobile phones sales from the country, offering huge potential for Motorola Mobility. 

Ahlqvist said that the company underwent a huge transformation in August 2012, after Google acquired Motorola's mobility business for $12.5 billion. "It required tough decisions in terms of reducing the number of products and business to a small number of markets but the forced change has helped it build business for the long term", he said, explaining Motorola's move to pull out of the India market

Mackenzie echoed the same things tech pundits have been saying about Samsung phones for years now: That they're made out of poorly designed and cheap-feeling plastic.
Despite making the best Android phone, HTC has always played second fiddle to Samsung in terms of sales.

Both companies have two new flagship devices launching at almost the same time. HTC One (M8) phone is available online in the US and in Verizon stores, and will be available through other carrier stores and Best Buy by April 10. Samsung's new Galaxy S5 phone will launch on or around April 11, depending on the carrier.

Following HTC's big launch event on Tuesday in New York, the company's president for Americas, Jason Mackenzie, wasn't shy about throwing punches at Samsung, both on stage and behind closed doors.

"We're a company that invests in our customers and delivers a beautifully designed product that you can feel proud of," Mackenzie said in an interview with Business Insider. "Samsung is a company that's focused on investing in advertising."

Mackenzie's comment is a common critique of Samsung. The theory goes that Samsung's success doesn't come from making great devices, but from its massive marketing and advertising budget.

"I think they play to their strength: they say, 'We have a lot of cash, let's go out and paint the world blue,'" Mackenzie added. "And I think that's evident when you look at that product."

Mackenzie echoed the same things tech pundits have been saying about Samsung phones for years now: That they're made out of poorly designed and cheap-feeling plastic.

"If you want to buy a product built out of cheap plastic, there's a solution for you," Mackenzie said of the Galaxy S5. "But we're going after a different customer, someone who wants the best."

Accenture has warned that weakness in its consulting business that hurt second-quarter results would carry on through the year.

Accenture Plc warned that weakness in its consulting business that hurt second-quarter results would carry on through the year, sending its shares down as much as 8%.
The consulting business, which brings in more than half of the company's revenue, has fallen in six of the last seven quarters as customers cut discretionary spending and stiff competition puts pressure on contract prices. 

Accenture raised its full-year profit forecast and the lower end of its revenue forecast. But it said revenue in the consulting business would be flat or grow in the low-single digits in the year ending August 31. 

The company reported record high consulting bookings of $4.6 billion but chief financial officer David Rowland said on a conference call with analysts that pricing pressure was eating into revenue growth. 

Consulting revenue fell 1% in US dollar terms and payroll costs rose, leading to a lower-than-expected profit for the quarter ended February 28. 

However, Evercore analyst David Togut said Accenture's track record of managing costs and the strong bookings numbers bode well for growth in 2015. 

"Multiple times since its 2001 IPO Accenture has successfully managed cost pressures. Superior bookings growth, high book-to-bill ratios and a strong track record of managing expenses reinforces our conviction in ACN's earnings growth prospects," Togut said. 

Hewlett-Packard Co said in February that revenue from its technology consulting business dropped 4% in the quarter ended January but that the business was more profitable. 

Accenture, recently chosen as the lead contractor for the Obamacare enrollment website, said it expected strong growth in its health and public service business in the second half of the year. 

The company raised its full-year profit forecast to $4.50 to $4.62 per share from $4.44 to $4.56 per share. 

It forecast full-year revenue growth of 3-6% in local currency, compared with its previous forecast of 2-6%. 

The company's net income fell 39% to $722.3 million in the second quarter. It earned $1.03 per share, slightly lower than analysts average expectation of $1.04, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. 

Net revenue, or revenue before reimbursements, rose 1% to $7.13 billion. That was in line with the company's forecast, but fell short of analysts' expectation of $7.21 billion. 

Shares of the company were trading down 6.5% at $77.59 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange. They hit a low of $76.25 earlier in the session. 

The stock has risen almost 10% since the company reported first-quarter results, outperforming a rise of about 4% in the S&P 500 index
