Boom time for PPOs as Citibank, Wipro, M&M, Philips, others use the route to pick candidates

Boom time for PPOs as Citibank, Wipro, M&M, Philips, others use the route to pick candidates.

A poor job market should logically have had a knock-on effect on B-school preplacement offers (PPOs). But no, these are actually thriving, even at non-IIMs.
It seems counter-intuitive but the worse the market, better the PPO offers to students. Also, PPOs have become a key hiring strategy for companies that would rather avoid the intense scramble for talent in the few final placement days.
With companies such as Citibank, Wipro, Mahindra & Mahindra and Philips, among others, increasingly using the PPO route to pick candidates, this is reflecting in a flurry of such offers at leading B-schools.
XLRI, XIM, MDI-Gurgaon, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies,TAPMI and IMI are all confident of surpassing last year’s numbers.
It’s a similar situation at the Indian Institutes of Management, with IIM-Calcutta, IIM-Lucknow and IIM-Bangalore witnessing a big surge in PPOs.
Description: Boom time or PPOs as Citibank, Wipro, M&M, Philips, others use the route to pick candidatesCompanies feel PPOs are more efficient and cost-effective, besides being a win-win situation as candidates also get the opportunity to see whether a company is the right fit for them.
“I am personally a great fan of PPOs because instead of trying to gauge a candidate from a 40-60 minute sort of interview, it is far better to have them immersed in the system for 8-10 weeks, and see how they function,” said Pratik Kumar, executive vice-president for human resources at Wipro.
PPOs are made by companies to students who have interned with them based on performance, and generally result in a firm job offer. Summer interns are among the preferred profiles of students recommended for hiring for full-time management associate positions, said Anuranjita Kumar, country HR officer, Citi India. The twomonth stint provides an opportunity to assess work ethic and values, she said.
Citi has already awarded seven PPOs to students from XLRI, JBIMS, MDI, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and Faculty of Management Studies. “About 60% associates of the 2013 batch at Citi were hired through the summer internship channel,” Kumar said.
Top institutes are reaping the dividends. MDI-Gurgaon has already received 52 PPOs till now from the likes of Deloitte, P&G, Coca-Cola, Reckitt Benckiser, Mahindra & Mahindra, JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs. That’s 27% up from the 41 PPOs it received in the whole of last year. It is expecting a 10-20% jump in remuneration. “The increasing number of PPOs showcases the fact that companies are realising the investments that incur on training the students for two months,” said Kanwal Kapil, chairperson-placements, MDI-Gurgaon.
TAPMI has received 12 PPOs already, compared with seven last year, and is confident there are more in the works. XIM-Bhubaneswar has nearly 40, with the highest salary offered being Rs 18.25 lakh.
Students at XLRI-Jamshedpur have got 41 PPOs and 27 PPIs (preplacement interviews), with offers ranging from Rs 12 lakh to Rs 22 lakh. Last year’s total PPO count was 72. ABG, Asian Paints, BCG, Capgemini, Cisco, Citibank, Colgate Palmolive, DBS, Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Philips and Tata Administrative Services are among those who have made PPOs at XLRI. IMI, which had 17 PPOs last year, has got 12 offers this time. “We should be getting at least 24 by December,” said Irfan A Rizvi, dean-corporate and alumni relations, IMI.
JBIMS has received 25 PPOs and PPIs so far and is confident of surpassing last year’s tally of 55 by December. Chennai’s Great Lakes Institute of Management, which had its first batch going for summer internships this year, has around 10 offers already.
Debashis Sanyal, dean at NMIMS, confirmed that PPOs are turning out to be the favoured recruiting method for companies, with 85 offers in the bag.

Mumbai start-up Wonobo takes on Google, on the street!

Mumbai start-up Wonobo takes on Google, on the street! Wonobo.com, owned by little-known Genesys International, has captured a 360-degree view of the city roads.

In its two-year journey since ideation, a dozen data-collecting vehicles of Wonobo.com have traversed as much as 150,000 km scanning the major cities in the country to launch an indigenous ‘street view’ service on the lines of Google’s offering.
Wonobo.com, owned by little-known Genesys International, has captured a 360-degree view of the city roads, including the narrowest bylanes, amid a plethora of regulations and rising concerns over privacy.
“The defence ministry is the nodal agency that clears the imagery. Due to the obvious concerns, there are some no-go areas but others they are fine with this,” says Sajid Malik, head and founder of the city-based Genesys International.
Malik, who has been in the mapping industry for over two decades, feels that there is a market for offering a 360- degree street views, which is created by sewing up multiple images taken by cameras fitted on vehicles.
He roped in Zaki Ansari, whose resume includes being part of the launch team of Rediff.com from a small south Mumbai apartment when the Internet was in its infancy, to spin a easy-to-use and consumer-friendly product.
After putting in about USD 35 million, long trips, mixed experiences and tens of zillion bytes of data, the duo launched Wonobo.com a fortnight back.
It can be noted that search engine giant Google is yet to launch its street view application in the country and is reportedly yet to get all the regulatory go-aheads.
Google Street View was launched in May 2007, in several cities in the US, and has since then expanded to include cities and rural areas worldwide.
Ansari, however, dismissed the comparisons with Google. Wonobo possesses a host of features that makes it useful from a city chronicling and also civic administration perspective, apart from empowering a person to indulge in a virtual tour of a place sitting anywhere in the world, he said.
“Suppose there is a pothole on the road. You can click a picture of it and pin it on the actual location on the website. A civic official sitting anywhere can access the same imagery and take action,” he explained.

LG throws open its door-in-door fridge lineup

LG throws open its door-in-door fridge lineup

LG must have had a lot of success with its current door-in-door refrigerator models, because the company just introduced three more to the lineup. If you don't already know, LG offers the door-in-door design on select French door models, and it's basically a special storage space contained within the right refrigerator door. This compartment is magnetically sealed and allows you to access that area with the push of a button without having to open the whole fridge. This easy-access design is ideal for your very favorite fridge items. And the good news is that all three of these new models will be available in the fourth quarter of this year.

LG LFX32945ST

Price:$3,699.99
Total capacity: 32 cubic feet
Refrigerator capacity: 21.5 cubic feet
Freezer capacity: 10.5 cubic feet
Door type: French 3-door
Dimensions (WxHxD): 35.75x70.25x37.125 inches
That $3,699.99 may seem like a hefty price for a fridge, but a 32-cubic-foot capacity is kind of unheard of in the French door world. Need to feed a (very) large family? LG's LFX32945ST might be your solution.

LG LMX30995ST

Price: $3,699.99
Total capacity: 30.3 cubic feet
Refrigerator capacity: 20.5 cubic feet
Freezer capacity: 9.8 cubic feet
Door Type: French 4-door
Dimensions (WxHxD): 35.75x70.25x36.25 inches
Here's another $3,699.99 model with a slightly smaller internal capacity of 30.3 cubic feet. This model stands out because it offers four doors rather than three. That's two different freezer drawers for optimal organizing.

LG LFX29945ST

Price:$3,199.99
Total capacity:29.2 cubic feet
Refrigerator capacity: 19.4 cubic feet
Freezer capacity: 9.6 cubic feet
Door type: French 3-door
Dimensions (WxHxD): 35.75x70.25x35.25 inches
This $3,199.99 model may be a little shorter on storage space at 29.2 cubic feet. But what it doesn't have in capacity, it makes up for in ice makers. Yep, it comes with dual ice makers. So if you regularly entertain a whole bunch of people, you probably won't run out of ice with the LFX29945ST.

Why Samsung needs to woo developers

Why Samsung needs to woo developers

The Korean company builds Android phones, but it still needs developers to make apps specific to its devices. CNET explains why.
Curtis Sasaki, Samsung senior vice president of Media Solutions Center America, talks about the company's commitment to developers at its conference in San Francisco.
SAN FRANCISCO -- For Samsung, courting developers isn't just a nice side project. It's a push that's vital to the company's future. The Korean company is the world's biggest mobile phone and TV vendor. It sells more Android smartphones than LG, Lenovo, Huawei, ZTE, and Motorola combined, and many consumers equate Samsung's Galaxy brand with Google's operating system. As a smartphone vendor, Samsung benefits from the Android ecosystem and the huge Google Play app store.
But being just another Android player is not enough, at least not if Samsung wants to continue its strong growth and hold onto its position at the top of the electronics food chain. Instead, the company has to set itself apart from everyone else in the market. It needs something that boosts its own ecosystem and connects its various devices together. It needs to make customers loyal to its devices and offer software and services they really use. It also needs to put itself on the same level as Apple and Google, owning the relationship with consumers instead of simply selling them gadgets.
But Samsung knows it can't do it all alone. That's where app makers come in.
Samsung this week is hosting its first developer conference at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco's Union Square neighborhood. Sessions encompass the various parts of Samsung's business, from mobile to TVs and home appliances. About 1,300 developers signed up for the event, most hoping to learn more about Samsung and figure out ways to partner with the Korean electronics giant. And Samsung hopes they'll all create apps that take advantage of features unique to its devices, such as S Pen. "At the end of the day, how do you please consumers?" asked Curtis Sasaki, senior vice president of Samsung's Media Solution Center America business. "Consumers want to get the best possible product, and on top of that product they want the best possible applications that leverage what they actually purchased."
A big reason Samsung is courting developers is to offer consumers a reason to buy its devices beyond just the sleek hardware. It's getting harder and harder to differentiate on hardware alone, and that becomes even more true as smartphones start to commoditize. In the future, Samsung will have to find other ways to make money from its devices beyond just enhancing the screen or other hardware capabilities.
Unfortunately for Samsung, software and services have never been its strong suit, as the company readily admits. It sometimes releases features that don't work very well or are confusing to use. However, Samsung is making a big push to get better, both through internal efforts and by partnering with startups. Its Media Solutions Center works on creating software products like the WatchOn app, while the Open Innovation Center seeks relationships with small companies.

"We need to work with people on the outside," said David Eun, head of Samsung's Open Innovation Center. "We need to partner. We need to have a sharing of learnings and best practices to really figure out what kinds of new, unique experiences we can create for our users." Samsung also needs to find a way to make customers more loyal to its products. It's not too hard to switch from one Android vendor to another. One way to make them stay is by offering unique features that users can't get anywhere else. Along with apps created by Samsung, the company hopes it also will include a significant number from partners.
Another big reason for Samsung to work with developers is to get them to create apps that work across its various devices. It not only makes smartphones and tablets but also sells TVs, home appliances, printers, and other items. But so far, those devices don't really talk to each other or offer any unique capabilities for consumers.
Samsung also knows it can't rely on Google and Android forever. As much as the companies say their relationship is strong, reports about tension are tough to ignore. Google has vowed not to favor Motorola, but there's no guarantee it won't change its mind in the future. And while Samsung says it's not interested in forking Android, much like Amazon has done, things could change.
Gregory Lee, president of Samsung Telecommunications America, kicks off the company's developer conference in San Francisco.
"Samsung has done tremendously well thus far simply taking what Google has given it, adding some things on top, and running with it," Current Analysis analyst Avi Greengart said. "But should it find itself without as willing a partner as Google...Samsung is going to need its own software and services platform." Then of course, there's Tizen, the fledgling open-source software being co-developed with Intel. The product has faced delays, partly due to not having enough apps or developer support. Samsung's developer conference this week focuses on Android, but it's also a way for the company to develop relationships that could carry over to Tizen. One session Tuesday will focus on the operating system.
Still, creating Samsung-specific apps is a tough pitch for the company. Many startups have limited resources to make apps for just iOS and Android, let alone Windows Phone, BlackBerry, or Samsung. If an Android app works just fine on a Samsung device, there may not be enough incentive to build something that works with S Pen or other Samsung features. Samsung has offered funding to developers to create apps, some told CNET, but those companies still have to find the engineers to do the work.
Samsung argues that developers will get access to its huge user base, as well as its global footprint. And their work "can have tremendous upside and exposure" through Samsung, as Gregory Lee, president of Samsung Telecommunications America, put it. Samsung also says it wants to listen and learn how it can better help developers.
It won't be easy, but the developer conference likely won't be the last we hear from Samsung about this push.

Apple OS X Mavericks review

Apple OS X Mavericks review

os-x-mavericks-635.jpg

There isn't one thing that jumps out with Apple's new Mac operating system, known as Mavericks - and that's a good thing.Mavericks has plenty of modest refinements that add up to a system well worth the upgrade - even if Apple weren't giving it away for free.
Many years ago, Web surfing changed dramatically when the Opera browser offered a way to open multiple Web pages in tabs instead of separate windows that cluttered the computer desktop. Most browsers soon followed.
That concept now comes to file management as part of Mavericks, which Apple released Tuesday for new Macs and older ones running Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion. You can now use tabs rather than separate windows for various folders, disks and networked servers.
The change may seem cosmetic, but it saves time. As I opened a file here and move a file there in previous versions of the Mac OS, I could easily have a half-dozen or more windows open. If I closed them, I'd have to go through the trouble of finding those folders and drives again later. Instead, I resigned to the clutter and the inefficiencies that came with it.
mavericks-tabs-635.jpgTabs mean I no longer have to accept that clutter. All the tabs are neatly organized at the top of a single window. I can access files and move them around more easily.
To further assist with file management, Mavericks lets you assign one or more tags to files. It's similar to the approach Google's Gmail uses to organize email.
I've been trying to go paperless by scanning or requesting bills and receipts electronically, but they've been scattered in more than 100 folders and subfolders.
tags_apps_635.jpgThe problem is that an individual file might belong in a number of folders. A receipt for a museum membership might go under "receipts," ''museum," ''charity," ''taxes" or in a folder for the credit card I used. With tags, I can label the file with all five and find it more easily come tax time - or audit.
It doesn't matter anymore what folder I put it in. Searching by the tag will automatically pull the relevant file up.
Mavericks also has features that reflect a world in which people use multiple devices.
You can access your tags when you use another Mavericks computer, though not iOS devices such as iPhones and iPads yet. If you're sending a document using an Apple app, tags get stripped to preserve privacy.
Through Apple's iCloud storage service, the company's Safari browser already syncs bookmarks across Mac and iOS devices such as iPhones and iPads.
icloud_keychain_creditcard_635.jpgStored passwords are now shared as well, along with credit card information. If you enter a credit card to buy a Miley Cyrus CD on a Mavericks Mac, you don't need to re-enter that information to buy earplugs from a different vendor, even when using an iPad. Apple says passwords and credit card information are encrypted for security.
And because you don't need to remember passwords, Safari can recommend hard-to-guess ones such as "Zsu-S5f-Lr7-gG4" to thwart hackers. That sure beats "password" as a password.
ibooks_635jpg.jpgApple e-books also sync. Mavericks introduces an iBooks app for the Mac, so you're no longer limited to iPhones and iPads. You can start a book on an iPhone and pick up where you left off on the Mac. Any highlights and notes transfer over. Bonus: Copy a passage into any app, and Mavericks automatically adds a citation.
Back to Safari, a new Sidebar offers quick access to bookmarks, sites marked for offline viewing and suggestions from people you follow on Twitter or LinkedIn. Unfortunately, Facebook links aren't part of that. A continuous scrolling feature automatically grabs the next site on your list when you get to the bottom of one.
Apple's much-maligned Maps app comes to the Mac. Last year, that app deposed Google Maps as the primary mapping app on iPhones, only to lead many people astray with mismarked landmarks and faulty directions.
apple_maps_local_635.jpgThe mobile app has gotten better, and the Mac version shares many of its attributes. You don't get turn-by-turn voice guidance on the Mac, but you can send results to your iPhone with two clicks. It's much easier to plan a trip using a real keyboard.
One peeve: Voice assistance on the phone seems to work only if you send just the destination. If you look up full directions with your planned starting point and send that, you'll have to flip through screens of directions manually, as I learned the hard way leaving San Francisco's airport.
Apple's mapping service also doesn't work on regular browsers, so you need an app on an Apple product - not Windows or Android. And it lacks transit directions.
Apple does integrate the service with its other apps, something it can do by building a stand-alone app. Click on an address in a Mail message for a small map within the app. You can then add the address to the Contacts app or pull up the full map in Maps.
And when you fill out a Calendar entry with an address, Apple uses its mapping service to calculate and block out travel time from the previous appointment. It also shows you a small map and the weather.
calendar_inspector_635.jpgThe Calendar app, meanwhile, is easier to read. Weeks no longer have to start on the same day each week, usually Sunday. Months don't have to begin on the first. You can view the last two weeks of one month and the first two weeks of the next on one screen, for instance.
Mavericks also offers easier ways to reply to chats and emails when notifications pop up on the side. I did have trouble when a friend and I sent each other streams of chats at once, without waiting for a reply. I can reply with only one line without returning to the chat app. And if another chat comes in as I'm replying, I see only the first message in the reply box.
But this and other gripes are rather minor.
mavericks_notifications_635.jpgMavericks offers much more you won't see, but might feel. That includes better power and memory management. There are also improvements when working with multiple monitors.
Mavericks doesn't offer as abrupt a change as iOS did when it moved to version 7 this fall. And it's certainly not as revolutionary as Microsoft's transition to Windows 7 and a tablet-like format last year. But Mavericks goes far in extending an already powerful operating system for desktops and laptops, without taking away the aspects that makes it easy to use.
And by offering it for free, Apple is following the model it has adopted for iPhones and iPads: Make money on devices, and keep customers happy with the latest software innovations.
Just remember to back up your files before downloading and installing the update through the Mac's app store.

LG G Flex officially unveiled, with 6-inch 720p curved display

LG G Flex officially unveiled, with 6-inch 720p curved display

Tipping its toe in the niche curved display smartphone market along with Samsung (and its differently curved Galaxy Round), LG has released the much-anticipated G Flex smartphone in Korea only for now, with availability starting in November via all three major local carriers. No pricing has been announced for now. LG in a press note did also mention that availability in additional markets will be announced thereafter.

Despite its low 720p resolution, the LG G Flex does seem to incorporate the current generation's best components, and can be considered a limited edition flagship from the Korean manufacturer. The Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean-based phablet is powered by a 2.26GHz Snapdragon 800 (MSM 8974) processor, an Adreno 330 GPU, and 2GB of RAM. It features a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a 2.1-megapixel rear camera. The G Flex powered by a 3,500mAh battery, weighs 177 grams, and is 7.9mm at its thinnest, while being 8.7mm at its thickest.

As for the 6-inch curved display, LG has revealed quite a few details about it - it's claimed to be the world's largest Plastic OLED display (P-OLED), which is supposedly ultra-light, ultra-thin and flexible. It's powered by a curved OLED panel, which is also built on plastic substrates instead of glass, supposedly giving the phone better durability. The display has features Real RGB technology to provide all three sub-pixels in one pixel, thereby making it "brighter and more precise."

The curved battery, as previously announced by LG Chem, is also supposedly amongst the first of its kind, using a patented Stack & Folding technology, meant to reduce the physical stress on the battery pack in curved form, and supposedly providing better stability and performance.

Both the LG G Flex and Samsung Galaxy Round are curved, however, LG's from top-to-bottom, or as LG calls, it, 'vertically curved.' The Galaxy Round is curved from side-to-side. According to LG, the design "reduces the distance between one's mouth to the microphone," delivering "improved voice and sound quality", and roughly translating to a 3dB increase in sound level when "compared to typical flat smartphones". The curved design apparently also offers a more reassuring grip, fits more comfortably in one's back pocket, and in in landscape mode, offerings an "IMAX-like" viewing experience for games and videos.

LG has also included a new 'Self-Healing' coating on the back cover, an elastic coating that supposedly has the ability to "recover from the daily wear-and-tear scratches and nicks that un-cased smartphones are likely to receive."

Apart from the 'Rear Keys' introduced with the G2, the LG G Flex several new UI also incorporates the some new user interface features, such as QTheater for quick access to photos, videos and YouTube from the lock screen; Dual Window for multitasking with two windows; Swing Lockscreen for a dynamic lockscreen image based on the way the phone's held; as well as three Rear Key LED indicators - Face Detection, Camera Timer and Urgent Call Alert.

Other UX features include LG's KnockON, Guest Mode and Plug & Pop, which were positively received when first introduced in the LG G2. The G Flex will offer LTE-A, LTE, HSPA+, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 3.0, Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac) and NFC connectivity. LG's also touting the numerous audio formats the phone can natively decode, such as MP3, CD quality or 24 bit/192kHz Hi-Fi. For now, the LG G Flex will only be available in Titan Silver.
