Samsung introduces free streaming service Milk Musicsamsung_milk_ap.jpg

Samsung on Friday unveiled a free music service for users of its Galaxy smartphones, entering a crowded market that includes Pandora, Spotify and Apple's iTunes.
The service dubbed "Milk Music" will offer some 200 ad-free radio stations to US customers with Samsung Galaxy devices.
"Milk introduces a fresh approach to music that reflects our innovation leadership and our focus on creating best-in-class consumer experiences," said Gregory Lee, president and chief executive ofSamsung Telecommunications America.
"We're offering consumers amazing, rich music experiences built around what matters most to them and their lifestyle."
Milk is powered by the radio service Slacker. The company suggested it may take a page from Apple by offering "unique music programming from top selling and emerging artists" available exclusively through the platform.
The South Korean Electronics giant, which is the world's biggest smartphone maker and is challengingApple in the US market, said the service will be offered with no log-in required and no need to browse for a specific artist or song.
It will have 200 genre-based and curated stations and some 13 million songs, and like other service will allow six song skips per hour per station.
Apple last year introduced its ad-supported iTunes radio service, which also allows customers to make purchases from the iTunes catalog.

Women Make 50% Of The Entire Talent Pool In Pharma

Women Make 50% Of The Entire Talent Pool In Pharma

Women Make 50% Of The Entire Talent Pool In Pharma
The ability to learn is the most important quality a leader can have… – Sheryl Sandberg

People become leaders by internalising a leadership identity and developing a sense of purpose. Internalising a sense of oneself as a leader is a repetitive process. A woman may assert leadership by taking purposeful action—such as convening a meeting to revive a dormant project. These interactions inform the woman’s sense of self as a leader and communicate how others view her fitness for the role.
As a woman’s leadership capabilities grow and opportunities expand, high-profile, challenging assignments and other organisational endorsements become more likely. Such affirmation gives a woman the fortitude to step outside a comfort zone and experiment with unfamiliar behaviors and new ways of exercising leadership. Leadership identity, which begins as a tentative, peripheral aspect of the self, eventually withers away, along with opportunities to grow through new assignments and real achievements. Over time, an aspiring leader acquires a reputation as having—or not having—high potential.
Our country has seen women leaders in various sectors over the years. Pharmaceutical sector in India, till a few years ago, was a lesser explored career option amongst Indian women. Today, we have leaders in the sector who have definitely made a mark for themselves in the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical sector in India. These women are calling the shots not only in pharma and healthcare space, but they are also setting benchmarks for leadership globally. Many Indian and MNC pharma companies position themselves as a preferable employer for women including scientists.
It is a widely known fact that the Pharma and Healthcare sector in India is ever growing and a demanding sector. Hence, pharma companies present in the country cannot afford to ignore over 50 per cent of their talent pool, which happens to be none other than women. It is only when organisations learn to tap the potential of their women employees and leaders that they can see higher revenues and also contribution to economic growth of the country. Gender equality and empowerment of women has a direct correlation with GDP growth and literacy rate.
The DNA of leadership remains the same irrespective of the gender. Courage, commitment and conviction are the core qualities of a leader. Women have long been slotted into stereotypes. Multitasking and balancing home and work have been long seen as strengths. The dialogue needs to change. Women today make choices of work and life in two separate buckets and allocate time to it. They have reached a position where they enjoy the power of making choices which allows them to allocate, negotiate and be more strategic and less transactional.
Successful women are self-reliant. This characteristic might be the most important. I never hear a smart, successful woman say, “I‘ll have to check with my husband and see what he thinks”. Any major decision that involves the family or relationship has been thought out ahead of time and smart, successful women make their own ultimate decisions. Then again, it‘s easy to make decisions when you know what you want and have wisely chosen a partner who supports that. Perhaps this trait is a culmination of all the rest!

Ways To Negotiate For A Higher Salary

Ways To Negotiate For A Higher Salary

Ways To Negotiate For A Higher Salary
Overcome the fear of rejection and resentment and bring in self-confidence while asking for a higher salary.

Salary negotiation happens either when an employee explores a new job opportunity, or during the yearly performance assessment meetings in the current organsiation. Though difficult, it is necessary that employees at all levels overcome the fear of rejection while asking for a salary hike. Let’s find out the trick of doing it the right way…
Amit Das chief human resources officer (CHRO), Reliance Communications Ltd. shares six guidelines to adhere to when one decides to engage in negotiating higher salary:
Do homework on market benchmarks, compensation trends:
Thorough market research across industry verticals sets the ground work for a better understanding of the compensation trends and current realities. Some of the important research areas will be to find out the range of market salary for the position offered by the new organisation, or the role in the current organisation based on experience and qualification; and, the market trend specific to the industry/sector.
Take inputs from professionals and recruitment consultants, the state of business operations and the compensation structure of the organisation in order to assess its percentile positioning in the market compensation. One should use this data to take an informed stand prior to the salary negotiation.
What value you bring in?
Be very clear about how you are going to add value to the business objectives and deliverables. Once you have the clarity on the linkage between your own deliverables and the tangible business outcome, it becomes much easier to justify the basis for negotiation and one becomes confident of the compelling reasons to look forward to a higher salary.
Overcome fear/shyness:
Probably, the most common reason why one doesn’t ask for a higher salary is for the fear of being rejected, fear of coming across as demanding or fear of resentment from one’s boss. One has to overcome this fear and bring in self-confidence to justify the case of asking for a higher salary. This can only be possible when someone has substantial data and facts captured from research as mentioned earlier, which helps in an objective and professional discussion around salary increase.
Last drawn salary as the baseline:
Most often any new salary offer gets pegged to the last drawn salary. It is only fair that the current salary should be treated as the baseline for further increments. However, one needs to keep in mind the additional competencies required to manage the challenges and deliverables of the new role. This will help justify the indicative increase on the last drawn salary.
Comprehend and negotiate the CTC components:
In most cases, negotiation happens over CTC (Cost to company), which in most cases, is divided between fixed and variable parts. However, it is very important to comprehend and if required, negotiate on the various components of your CTC, which might help in arriving at a better take home salary.
Be realistic and reasonable:
One should be realistic about what you are asking for. The negotiation discussion should not be perceived by the organisation that the employee is demanding and greedy, something which is unreasonable and unjustified. It is always appreciated when the employee creates a platform for objective and factual discussion, which leads to a mutually agreed outcome.

Men, look at what's down there

Men, look at what's down there

Men, look at what's down there
Men, look at what's down there

The abs obsession is leading men to focus on the upper body alone. Here's why and how you should throw a look at what's down there

Recently, Hollywood actor Gerard Butler was seen showing off his biceps while grabbing a cup of coffee in West Hollywood. The photo just had to make it to the leading dailies — yet another testimony to the popularity of bulging arms.

Closer home, Shahid Kapoor's arms could well be the best in the business, but the moment you zoom out to look at his full frame, you'll see those undernourished legs marring the show.

Mumbai's fitness trainers agree that most of their clients suffer from the Shahid syndrome: they join gyms to get 'Popeye arms', with few concentrating on working out their legs. The result: lollipop bodies.

"For most men, working out means acquiring a body they can show off. They focus on chest, back, arms and abdominal muscles," says trainer Vinod Channa. A man's upper and lower body workout ratio, he says, should be 60:40, instead of the current 80:20.

Heavy concentration on biceps and abs, while ignoring quadriceps (the muscle group in the front of the thigh) can also change the body's centre of gravity, says trainer Kunal Sharma. "These men tend to lose their balance easily, increasing their chances of injury."

Guys, here's an exercise plan guaranteed to reverse the lollipop body

Step up for your glutes
Hold a dumbbell in each hand and step up by extending the knee and hip of the right leg. Place the right foot on the step board/elevated platform and then bring your left foot up as well. Get back on ground level, one foot at a time. Alternate with the other leg. Do two sets with 10 to 12 repetitions each.

This one works the quadriceps and involves both, the knee and hip joints. It also involves other muscles like glutes, calves and hamstrings, which assist in the movement. The lower back and ab muscles get involved, as they act as stabilizers to help maintain proper posture as you execute the movement.

Calf raises for soleus
For the seated calf raise, sit with your back against the back pad. Place the thigh under the lever pad. Inhale and lift the heels up, stretching the lower part of the calf muscle. As you exhale, lower the heels to starting position. Do three sets with 10 to 12 repetitions.

The soleus is a smaller muscle but makes a significant contribution to the size and shape of muscular calves. When your knees are bent during seated calf raise exercise, your gastrocnemius — the bigger muscle group in the calves — is deactivated, thereby giving full attention to the soleus.

Squats for the quadripceps
Place your back against the machine's back pad. Keep your stance slightly wider than the shoulders. Squat down as in natural sitting position. Hips should be at knee level. The knee should not extend beyond the toes. Placing your feet towards the back of the foot plate will further emphasise the quadriceps contraction. Do two sets with 10-12 repetitions each.

Quads are responsible for knee strength and squats help build these muscles (along with hamstrings and calves), and create an anabolic environment, which promotes bodywide muscle building.

Leg curls for hamstring muscles
Lie down on the leg curl machine face downwards, with the pad placed on the lower part of the calf muscle (see illustration). Lift it and curl your leg up. Exhale while lifting it and inhale as you bring the leg back to starting position. While lifting, make sure you don't lift your lower back. Do three sets with 10 to 12 repetitions. This exercise works on the muscles at the back of the thigh since they contract when you bend your knee.

Abductor for inner thighs
Sit on the abductor machine with the back against the back pad. Place the lever pads against the inner thighs and select a weight you are comfortable with. Now bring your thighs together, without shifting the position of your feet. Do two sets with 10 to 12 repetitions each.

When one or more of the torso muscles is weak, your core stability suffers and pelvis may tilt to one side when standing on one foot. This will affect your stability while walking, running or taking the stairs. Abductor exercises help enhance core stability, which improves balance, posture and overall movement

Guy who accused Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to face charges

Guy who accused Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to face charges

NEW YORK: A New York businessman must face criminal fraud charges for trying to claim a billion-dollar stake in social media company Facebook Inc, a federal judge has ruled.
Paul Ceglia, 40, is accused of forging a 2003 contract with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg that supposedly entitled him to part ownership of the company.
After an hour-long hearing in New York, US District Judge Andrew Carter rejected Ceglia's request to throw out the charges, finding he had failed to meet the "high standard" needed to dismiss a grand jury indictment.
Ceglia sued Zuckerberg and Facebook in 2010 in a federal court in Buffalo, New York, claiming that he and Zuckerberg had signed a contract while Zuckerberg was a freshman at Harvard University for Ceglia to invest $1,000 in a planned social networking website.
Zuckerberg had previously done some programming work for Ceglia's company, StreetFax.com. Facebook has argued that the only contract between the two men was related to that company and accused Ceglia of faking various documents as part of his lawsuit.
Last year, a magistrate judge in Buffalo recommended that Ceglia's lawsuit be dismissed, finding that it was "highly probable and reasonably certain" that the contract was fabricated in order to pursue the lawsuit. The federal judge overseeing the case has not yet ruled on that recommendation.
Prosecutors in New York charged Ceglia in 2012, accusing him of forging documents as part of the Buffalo litigation.
Ceglia has since filed a separate lawsuit against Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara, whose office is prosecuting Ceglia, and US Attorney General Eric Holder seeking to halt the criminal case.
Ceglia's defense attorney, David Patton, argued that the government should be barred from prosecuting him for allegations he made in the context of a civil lawsuit, warning that it could discourage litigants from filing claims.
He also said the government's allegations do not constitute criminal fraud under federal law.
"They're alleging that it's simply a phony, sham litigation," he said. "That's not fraud."
Carter said the indictment was sufficient to move ahead, though he said he would consider Patton's arguments at a later date if the case goes to trial.
Following the hearing, Ceglia vowed to press forward with his claims against Facebook, while his civil attorney, Joseph Alioto, said they would prove the Zuckerberg contract is legitimate.
"Nothing is going to stop me," Ceglia said.
Ceglia's lawsuit created a bizarre backdrop as Facebook marched toward its initial public offering in May 2013. Facebook's origins were also the subject of a separate legal challenge by Zuckerberg's Harvard classmates, twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, that was chronicled in the 2010 film, "The Social Network."
The criminal case is US v. Ceglia, US District Court, Southern District of New York, No 12-cr-00876. The lawsuit against Bharara and Holder is Ceglia v. Holder et al in the same court, No. 13-00256. The civil case is Ceglia v. Zuckerberg et al, US District Court, Western District of New York, No. 10-00569

Twitter Inc spent $36 million to buy 900 IBM patents, according to documents filed with the Securities Exchange Commission.
Twitter Inc spent $36 million to buy 900 IBMpatents, according to documents filed with the Securities Exchange Commission. The microblogging giant previously disclosed that it has bought IBM patents and signed a cross-licensing agreement with IBM, however, the amount was not revealed.

The agreement reportedly was signed after IBM accused Twitter in November - on the eve of its high-profile initial public offering - of infringing three of its patents. At the time, it underscored how few patents the six-year-old social media company possessed in relation to more established rivals.

A cross-licensing agreement will help safeguard Twitter against similar claims in the future.

IBM is one of the industry's largest research spenders and stockpilers of intellectual property, a consistent leader in US patent filings and the owner of some 41,000 patents.

Twitter is following on the heels of Facebook, which itself faced similar claims before its own 2012 IPO. The world's largest social network has since gone on a patent-buying spree, acquiring intellectual property from tech bellwethers, including Microsoft Corp and IBM.

Facebook-owned photo sharing service Instagram said it has landed its first deal with a major ad agency.
SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook-owned photo sharing service Instagram said it has landed its first deal with a major ad agency.
The leading social network wouldn't disclose financial aspects of the alliance with Omnicom, but online reports indicated it could be worth as much as $100 million in ads from clients the agency represents.
"Omnicom shares our passion for and understanding of the mobile Instagram community," Facebook director of market operations Jim Squires said in an email reply to an AFP inquiry.
"Our teams are going to work hand in hand to develop and execute campaigns that provide people with amazing imagery - and drive meaningful business results for advertisers."
Squires maintained that Instagram's advertising strategy will continue to involve displaying a limited number of high-quality images or videos from brands that already have a strong presence at Instagram.
Instagram in November began displaying ads as Facebook moved to start making money from the smartphone photo sharing service it bought in a billion-dollar deal in early 2012.
Instagram's opening roster of advertisers included Adidas, Lexus, PayPal, Burberry and Ben & Jerry's ice cream.
California-based Facebook is carefully adding magazine-quality photo ads to Instagram as it hopes to bring in revenue from the service without alienating users.

Microsoft goof up lets anyone grab Windows 8.1 Update 1
Although the update isn't due for a public release until April 8, the leaked build is what manufacturers use to make sure their hardware is ready to go.

Too impatient to wait until next month to download the first big update to Microsoft's latest desktop OS? If you know where to look, you might not have to. Then again, you may not want to just yet.

Wind of a release to manufacturing (RTM) build of the forthcoming Windows 8.1 Update 1 started making the rounds of public cloud storage services after mistakenly being released by none other than Microsoft itself.

Although the update isn't due for a public release until April 8, the leaked build is what manufacturers use to make sure their hardware is ready to go, especially for PCs that will ship with the latest version of Windows already installed.

Adventurous types won't have to wait nearly that long, since theRTM build of Update 1 is now available for download, assuming you know where to look.

The update flap began with Microsoft's enthusiasm for getting Update 1 into the hands of its employees, using the public Windows Update servers to post the build with a file name that wouldn't be obvious to outsiders.

That tactic apparently backfired, allowing non-employees to access and download the files using little more than a "simple software tweak," and it didn't take long for those files to get uploaded to cloud storage lockers such as Mega.

But just because you can download now, doesn't mean you should. Mashable noted the RTM build is likely missing many "hardware-specific drivers" as well as links to services that have yet to be updated, making Update 1 a dubious prospect at the moment.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 is expected to include improvements to the so-called "modern" UI including the ability to boot straight into the Desktop, the return of shutdown on the Start screen and a more familiar task bar that aims to unify the old and new user interfaces
