Nokia Normandy with Android 4.4 KitKat listed at Vietnamese online retailer

Nokia Normandy with Android 4.4 KitKat listed at Vietnamese online retailer

Nokia's anticipated first Android phone, believed to be dubbed Nokia X and previously codenamed Normandy, might soon be available in Vietnam, hints an online listing of the yet-to-be-announced device.
WMPoweruser spotted the alleged Nokia X aka Normandy listed at an e-commerce website in Vietnam, purportedly revealing the innards of the rumoured device. According to the Vietnamese online listing, the alleged Nokia X will come with a 4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 480x854 (FWVGA) pixels; 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor; 5-megapixel rear camera; microSD card support and running Android 4.4 KitKat.

Further, the listing seemingly confirms that the rumoured Nokia X will come with dual-SIM support, while connectivity options including 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPRS, EDGE, AGPS and Micro-USB. Other specifications include 4GB of inbuilt storage and Adreno 302 GPU.
Notably, the listing claims that the alleged Nokia X supports Google services like Google Play store, Google Search, Google Now, Google Maps, Calendar and YouTube.
It's worth pointing out that the image posted on the Vietnamese retailer's site shows the alleged Nokia X's home screen. The purported home screen includes apps for dialler, message, contacts, Internet, Twitter, Skype, MixRadio, Here Maps, Camera app, Plants Vs. Zombies, and Gallery, which is very much in-line with previous leaked screenshots of the device.
Unfortunately, the purported Vietnamese retailer's listing does not reveal anything about pricing and availability details of the alleged Nokia X phone.
Not too long ago, @evleaks claimed that Nokia's only Android phone might be launched as the Nokia X.

Microsoft to rename SkyDrive as OneDrive, retain logo

Microsoft to rename SkyDrive as OneDrive, retain logomicrosoft-logo-different-635.jpg

Microsoft is renaming its cloud storage service "OneDrive" after British broadcaster BSkyB took issue with its former name, "SkyDrive."
The two sides settled the dispute last July for undisclosed financial terms after British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC won an initial case in a British court.
Microsoft said the change would be made soon but didn't give a date.
While the rebranding doesn't involve a change to the service's logo - two blue clouds on a white background - it does bring the name more in line with other company brands.
Last July, Microsoft re-organized its corporate structure to focus on providing both devices and services in a strategy it called "One Microsoft."
Its latest game console, released in November, is called "Xbox One."
Microsoft last week reported revenue and earnings for its fiscal second quarter that topped Wall Street expectations, as the company sold 3.9 million Xbox One consoles to retailers and doubled revenue from its line of Surface tablets from a quarter earlier.
Net income in the quarter through December climbed to $6.56 billion, or 78 cents per share, from $6.38 billion, or 76 cents per share, a year ago.
Outgoing CEO Steve Ballmer, who announced he'd step down by August, said in a statement the Redmond, Wash.-based company's devices and consumer segment had a "great holiday quarter." A new CEO is expected to be announced soon.

Samsung sells record 86 million smartphones in Q4, widens lead over Apple: Report

samsung-holiday-launch-635.jpg
Samsung Electronics Co Ltd sold a record 86 million smartphones in the fourth quarter and widened its lead over Apple Inc even after the U.S. firm reached a new iPhone sales high, data from research firm Strategy Analytics showed.
Samsung took 29.6 percent of the global smartphone market in the fourth quarter, ahead of Apple's17.6 percent, as strong low-end market growth led by Chinese vendors continued to shake up the smartphone industry, the data showed.
Apple sold a record 51 million iPhones in the year-end quarter although its market share slipped from the previous year's 22 percent, as Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and Lenovo Group Ltd rose to become the world's No.3 and No.4 respectively.
Huawei sold 16.6 million smartphones and Lenovo sold 13.6 million, each taking 5.7 percent and 4.7 percent of the market.
"There is clearly now more competition coming from the second-tier smartphone brands. Huawei, LG Electronics and Lenovo each grew their smartphone shipments around two times faster than the global industry average," Strategy Analytics analyst Linda Sui said.
"Samsung and Apple will need to fight hard to hold off these and other hungry challengers during 2014."
For the entire 2013, global smartphone shipments grew 41 percent to reach a record 990 million. Samsung sold 319.8 million units to take 32.2 percent, up from 30.4 percent in 2012.
Apple sold 153.5 million iPhones with a 15.5 percent market share.

2014 is to be Apple Inc's watershed moment in China, when a long-awaited deal with the nation's largest carrier was to have propelled it back toward the top ranks of its most crucial market, clawing back ground from rival Samsung Electronics.

India To Create 100 Million Jobs In Manufacturing Sector: Anand Sharma

India To Create 100 Million Jobs In Manufacturing Sector: Anand Sharma

India To Create 100 Million Jobs In Manufacturing Sector: Anand Sharma
India is looking to create as many as 100 million skilled jobs in the manufacturing sector by raising its share of GDP to 25 per cent from 16 per cent, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said.

Sharma is here for the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meet where he would also have interactions with top executives of large companies from across the world.
“India aims to raise manufacturing (sector’s) share of GDP from 16 per cent to 25 per cent and create 100 million skilled jobs. This is a must do,” Sharma said while addressing an WEF session on manufacturing.
According to the Minister, India needs to expand its manufacturing sector to boost exports and ensure sustainability.
As part of India’s national manufacturing policy (NMP), the country is seeking to boost the sector’s growth and ramp up its share in the country’s GDP to 25 per cent from the current 15-16 per cent in the next decade. The target is to create 100 million jobs by 2022.
The decline in manufacturing sector growth rate has cast its shadow on the country’s exports that slowed down to about 6 per cent in November last.
Sharma, who later today will be meeting around 80 business leaders from India and abroad at an investment round-table here, yesterday met top executives of global firms, including Diageo, Heineken and Shell, and pitched the India growth story.
He is among a large delegation of ministers as well as business leaders from India who are attending the World Economic Forum annual meeting in this Swiss ski resort town.
During his meeting with various high level executives of global companies on the sidelines of WEF meet, Sharma assured them about the growth potential of the Indian economy.
Apart from global spirits major Diageo’s CEO Ivan Menezes, Sharma met executives from private equity player Carlyle, among others.
The Minister held meetings at ‘India Adda’, set up every year here by India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF).
The meetings come against the backdrop of the Indian economy witnessing slow growth. The government is looking at ways to attract more foreign direct investments. Sharma is also meeting US Trade Representative Michael Froman and WTO chief Roberto Azevedo on the sidelines of the WEF meet.
These meetings would be happening for the first time after WTO’s ministerial conference in Bali.
Overcoming failures over the years, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) reached a landmark agreement in Bali that is expected to help boost global trade by USD 1 trillion. The agreement has also taken into account concerns of countries like India on protecting its food security scheme to provide subsidised grains to the poor.

Teenagers Set Up Stoodle To Enable Online Peer Tutoring & Learning

Teenagers Set Up Stoodle To Enable Online Peer Tutoring & Learning

Teenagers Set Up Stoodle To Enable Online Peer Tutoring & Learning
17-year old Arjun Mehta and his friends want to bridge the education gap.
When Arjun Mehta joined The Harker School in San Jose, California, he quickly realized the disparity in learning in the private institution from the public school he attended his freshman year. Wanting to do something to bridge the gap Mehta realized that there was a great opportunity to connect students from different schools to share knowledge.
Using technology as a resource, Mehta in October 2011 developed a platform called Instunet that would enable such collaboration amongst students of different schools. Buoyed by the initial success Mehta roped in his classmate Divyahans Gupta and his friend Simar Mangat to scale things up.
The bridge:
“Stoodle.org’s mission is to help bridge the national achievement gap in education by making it easy to learn online in real-time from friends and teachers,” says Mehta, CEO, Stoodle.org.
The entire platform is built on HTML5 technology. In a typical use case scenario – a student needs help on a homework problem, goes onto www.stoodle.org, launches a classroom, shares the unique classroom URL with his classmate via Facebook/Email/IM, his friend joins the class, and the online tutoring begins.
Teachers also use Stoodle.org to host online open office hours or question and answer sessions. In order to do this, they would simply send an email to their student(s) with the classroom URL and the time they will be online in the class. The students could then click the URL around the given time and the online teaching begins.
“We provide a digital whiteboard with drawing tools plus image uploader, text chat, and voice chat in order to simulate an actual face-to-face tutoring experience. Anything that can be taught or collaborated on in real life can be done online through Stoodle.org. Students can collaborate on homework problems, group assignments, or just peer help in general,” says Mehta, 17.
Proof of the pudding:
The startup saw further validation of their platform when in June 2012 they pitched their company to Neeru Khosla, Executive Director of the CK-12 Foundation. Khosla loved the idea and decided to bring it under the CK-12 umbrella and give full support to the project. The CK-12 Foundation is a California-based non-profit organization that provides free online education materials to students.
“After I met them I thought what they were doing is impressive. I liked their approach and the fact that they had a very clear vision of what they wanted to do. They had the capability and they were trying hard,” says Khosla. Around the same time the trio also decided to change the name of the startup from Instunet to a catchier Stoodle.
For Mehta this is not his first brush with entrepreneurship. At the age of 12, when Mehta was in Grade 6, he partnered with his father Karl Mehta to start PlaySpan. The startup in 2011 was acquired for about $190 million by Visa, making Arjun and Karl millionaires. Karl Mehta in April 2013 joined Menlo Ventures as a Venture Partner.
Progress has been steady for Stoodle and even before its official launch in December 2012 the startup had about a 200 users which has grown to about a couple thousand now. The startup has also seen changes as the original version of the platform were based on Flash technology and its inflexibility caused a lot of pain. “Stoodle.org is a platform that is more intuitively used on touch screen devices like the iPad, and non-compatibility with the iPad was one of the biggest pieces of feedback we got. We then made the switch to HTML5,” says Mehta.
Mehta says the future vision for Stoodle is to have students and teachers using it in every high school across the country and even expanding it internationally to facilitate cross-country online tutoring. Product-wise, Mehta wants to optimize Stoodle.org for other mobile devices other than the iPad.
Mehta admits that running a startup while balancing academics is definitely very difficult, but it is something the founders have figured out how to do over time. While the startup does not have a revenue model in mind but in the future they may license the technology to private schools. “However, we know for certain that we will never incorporate advertisements or charge students to use Stoodle.org. We will always keep it free as we believe that anyone wanting a proper education should be able to access one,” says Mehta.
While the company is based in the US, its benefit, application and utility can be availed by anyone across the world. “Indian students (and international students for that matter) can by all means use Stoodle.org. We are just not actively marketing Stoodle.org in those markets at the moment. Anyone can use Stoodle.org,” says Mehta.

How To Evolve Into A Leader From An Executive?

How To Evolve Into A Leader From An Executive?

How To Evolve Into A Leader From An Executive?
Find out how to deal with the two key transitions of your career and evolve into a leader from an executive.

The evolution of an executive into a leader is not easy and requires meticulous planning, constant updation of existing skills and adoption of new skills, and a vision. Taking right decisions at the right time is imperative. How do you take on the two key transitions of your career journey? Let’s find out…
Transition one: Executive to a manger
You might be a consistent performer, but that one promotion that would make you a manager still eludes you. Ever wondered what is it that you are doing “wrong”? Well, the answer to it is very simple. You are not doing anything “wrong”; it’s just that the definition of “right” has to change for you, if you plan to evolve. You need to shed your role as an executive and start doing things the managerial way. To achieve this, Blesson George, head – Business HR, Jubilant Life Sciences, stated during a TimesJobs.com chat session that one needs to un-learn and learn. “You need to come down from your frontline execution mode and showcase to your seniors that you can independently manage a project or an assignment. This way you can demonstrate your managerial abilities.”
Once you start doing things “the managerial way”, the organisation takes a note of it. George highlighted that organisations have multiple modes of assessing the potential of employees. Psychometric tests, development centres, skip level meetings and leading projects involving multiple functions are some of the ways by which an organisation can assess you. “On your part, you need to demonstrate that you are not just a doer but an enabler as well. Do keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities to do so,” he suggested.
Learning from your experiences goes a long way in establishing yourself as a successful manager. During one of theTimesJobs.com chat session, Hema Parikh, director-Human Resources, Ajuba Solutions India Pvt. Ltd, stated that during your journey as a manager, every day adds to the learning experience. To be an efficient manager, you have to be a teacher and sometimes a student too.
Transition two: Manager to a leader
You evolved from a being a top performing executive to a successful manager. Now, how do you evolve from a manager into a leader? According to Parikh, the skills required to be a leader are confidence, ability to foresee both opportunities and risks and above all, strategic communication. As a leader, being optimist is very important.
A word of caution! You might be a very good and efficient manager, but that would not guarantee you a leadership position in the organisation. Organisations are aware of the fact that not all good managers are successful and influential leaders. George strongly believes this fact. “Leaders influence, while managers only manage. Leaders drive for positive outcomes, while managers may only be deriving outcomes. The differences are many. Hence, it’s safe to say that while all leaders are good managers, it’s not true vice versa,” he stated.
For leadership roles, the definition of performance becomes broader. Prashant Bhatnagar, director- Hiring and Staffing, SapientNitro India, affirmed during a TimesJobs.com chat session that it starts to include the dexterity with which you articulate a vision, influence peers and co-workers and an overall understanding of the industry landscape.
Peter Drucker once famously stated, “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.” Always keep this in mind as you evolve, might come in handy when you need some perspective.

Talent Woes Of IT/Telecom Sector

Talent Woes Of IT/Telecom Sector

Talent Woes Of IT/Telecom Sector
Industry experts highlight the talent woes faced by them and share some possible strategies to overcome them.

IT/Telecom is one of the leading employment generators in the country. Handling a large talent pool, can never be easy. As the industry grows, the challenges also evolve. The sector has to continually come up with innovative solutions and keep updating them, to overcome their manpower woes. Let’s find out some of the key challenges faced by the IT/Telecom sector, and the possible solutions for them.
According to Ramana Vemuri, VP-People, Process and Operations, Cigniti Technologies, the major challenge faced by them is to find the right talent that is compatible with company’s culture. This requires a combination of skill, resourcefulness and brand recall. “Hiring and retaining top talent is another challenge that demands continuous engagement. Ensuring adequate growth opportunities in the chosen areas of specialisation is the biggest employee engagement challenge that companies are facing,” he stated.
According to him, some possible strategies to overcome the mentioned challenges are:
  • Adoption of social recruiting through highly intelligent platforms, which can look at analytics and help clone talent, is one of the best initiatives to source great talent
  • A key engagement strategy is to ensure continuous investments that upgrade your talent’s skill sets
  • Focus on leadership development and efforts to maintain the work-life balance will not only retain talent but also enrich the work environment
  • Global thought leaders and technology specialists in mentor roles will attract the younger lot to set pragmatic goals and realise their potential. This helps in crafting a harmonious relationship between the employer and the employee
Rajeeb Biswas, director-HR, Q3 Technologies, laid down some key challenges faced by them:
  • Improving employee retention
  • Difficulty in recruiting quality candidates
  • Increased competition
  • Being proactive and hiring within timelines to meet business needs
  • Hiring of Java and .NET professionals between 3-8 years of experience remains a challenge, due     to increasing demand in quality IT professionals
He believes the possible solutions could be to adopt a mixed bag of conventional, vintage and proactive hiring practices:
  • Designing innovative job posting (internal and external)
  • Using different search engines
  • Encouraging employee referrals with various reward mechanisms
  • Using social networking websites
Sunil Goel, managing director, GlobalHunt, believes that skill deficit is a major crisis plaguing the IT/Telecom sector. The current education system is not equipped enough to scale-up the employability quotient of candidates, to match the industry requirements. “It is important that the industry starts adopting colleges and universities and train the students based on the organisation’s need and requirements. This would really help plug-in the skills gap,” he said.

Infosys bags $100-million deal from Netherlands-based TNT Express
Infosys has bagged an approximately $100 million multi-year outsourcing contract from Netherlands-based courier delivery service.

BANGALORE: Infosys has bagged an approximately $100 million (Rs 620 crore) multi-year outsourcing contract from Netherlands-based courier delivery service TNT Express, sources close to the development said. The country's second-largest IT company will provide application development and maintenance (ADM) services, an expansion of its existing scope of work for TNT Express.

TNT Express, which focuses on Europe and connecting Europe with the rest of the world, has set a target to achieve 220 million in savings by 2015 through consolidating services, optimizing infrastructure, increasing productivity and reducing indirect costs.

The express logistics provider is reshaping its portfolio, divesting its domestic operations in China and Brazil and reducing exposure to intercontinental fixed air capacity. It is focusing on more attractive segments like international and special services products, small and medium enterprise customers, higher weight parcels and palletized freight.

TNT Express is investing 200 million in infrastructure and IT till the end of 2015 to optimize and automate depots and hubs and in businesssupporting and customer IT, the company's website says. For instance, TNT Express is launching new online booking and payment tools to improve its customer interface technology.
TOI could not contact TNT for confirmation. An Infosys spokesperson said the company does not comment on client engagements.

Logistics companies like UPS, DHL and FedEx have had outsourcing engagements with Indian IT vendors for some time now. Wipro has serviced FedEx; Cognizant and Infosys have provided IT services to DHL.

"UPS, DHL and FedEx have over 3,000 FTEs (full time equivalent, which is roughly the same as full time employee) each in India through its outsourcing partners. Some of them compete with the US postal service and they have to focus on cost structures and on upgrading their application suites that have a shelf life of 8-10 years. So a large chunk of contracts are in the maintenance space," said Sudin Apte, CEO of IT advisory firm Offshore Insights
.

Launched in September 2013 in China, N1 boasts of a swivel camera and offers a variant that runs Cyanogenmod (an alternative version of Android) out of the box.
NEW DELHI: Chinese handset maker Oppo is all set to enter the Indian market. The company has sent invites for a launch event scheduled for January 30, where it is expected to unveil its first smartphone for the Indian market. The company has roped in Hindi film actors Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor as brand ambassadors.

While there is no official word on the device to be unveiled at the event, speculations are rife that the company will launch Oppo N1. Launched in September 2013 in China, N1 boasts of a swivel camera and offers a variant that runs Cyanogenmod (an alternative version of Android) out of the box.

Oppo N1 sports a large 5.9-inch full-HD IPS display. Powered by a 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor and 2GB RAM, the smartphone runs a highly customised version of Android 4.2 (Color ROM). It sports a 13MP camera placed on a rotating swivel capable of rotating 206 degree.

The smartphone is backed by a 3610mAh battery and comes in 16 and 32GB storage variants.

It would be interesting to see how the company prices its smartphones in India as it will not just compete with tier-1 brands like Sony and Samsung but also with domestic players like Micromax and Karbon; and Chinese brands such as Gionee.

How to prepare for the end of Windows XP

How to prepare for the end of Windows XP

How to prepare for the end of Windows XP
Microsoft has two suggestions for those still using Windows XP: upgrade the operating system or buy a new PC.

As Microsoft has been reminding its customers for many months, support for its Windows XPoperating system ends on April 8. While yourWindows XP computer will continue to run, Microsoft will not be providing security updates and other patches to keep the system safer from viruses and other malware attacks. The company also announced that it would not be providing an XP-compatible version of its Microsoft Security Essentials software on its site, either.

Microsoft has two suggestions for those still using Windows XP: upgrade the operating system or buy a new PC. The system requirements for Windows 8.1, the latest operating system, may be a little high for older hardware.

You need a machine with at least a 1-gigahertz processor, 1 gigabyte of memory, 16 gigabytes of hard drive space and a graphics card compatible with DirectX9 and the Windows Display Driver Model software.

Microsoft's site has a tutorial on potentially upgrading from Windows XP, including links to an upgrade assistant program that checks your current machine to see if it can run Windows 8.1. You can check to see if your older programs work on Windows 8.1 on the Compatibility Center page.

If neither of these options sounds appealing or possible, you have other choices. You can continue on with Windows XP with third-party security software, although you may find fewer sites, services and programs that continue to work with an operating system that was first released in 2001.

Although it may take some heavy lifting and expertise, some people have found extended life for old hardware by installing the open-source Linux operating system, which tends to have less-intensive system requirements than other operating systems
