3D hologram phone calls to be a reality soon
A phone that allows users to see a live 3D hologram image of the person on the other end of the line could be available in 5 years.
LONDON: A Star Wars-style phone that allows users to see a live 3D hologram image of the person on the other end of the line could be available within five years.

A Polish telecommunications company plans to create the world's first hologram phone call.

The concept was made popular when Princess Leia appeared before Luke Skywalker as a hologram in the 1977 blockbuster movie Star Wars.

The technology is being pioneered by Leia Display Systems, a company named after the Star Wars heroine.

To make the image, the caller will sit in front of a specialized camera that has two lenses to create a single blended image.

A hologram machine receives the image and will then beam it on to a water-vapour screen in 3D. With the use of the microphone, the hologram image will speak and move in real time, The Times reported.

The makers aim to have a working model of the telephone operating by next year and hope to have the product for sale within five years.

"We are on the frontier of technology that was imagined in movies 40 years ago. It will be as if loved ones, friends and family are standing right in front of you," said Marcin Panek, chief executive of Leia Display Systems.

LG unveils webOS-based smart TVs
LG Electronics said it will bring the software that once powered Palm's smartphones to majority of its new smart TVs this year.

SEOUL: LG Electronics said it will bring the software that once powered Palm's smartphonesto majority of its new smart TVs this year.

The South Korean firm unveiled webOS-based smart TVs at a trade fair in Las Vegas, less than a year after its purchase of the operating system for smartphones and tablet computers from Hewlett-Packard.

HP's sales of webOS to LG in March gave a new life to the ill-fated webOS software created by Palm, the maker of Palm Pre smartphones later acquired by HP.

While HP scrapped the mobile devices running on the webOS after disappointing sales in late 2011, LG Electronics is betting big on the webOS to improve the way viewers navigate smart TVs. LG is the world's second-largest TV maker by shipments after Samsung Electronics Co.

Even though television set makers had hoped to mimic the robust growth in the smartphone industry by introducing the Internet-connected televisions that can run applications like smartphones do, theTV market's size was forecast to shrink in 2013 due to the global economic recession, according to market research firm IHS.

More than 70% of LG's new smart TVs this year will be based on webOS, which helps simplify searching contents and setting up the TV. LG also expects the new OS would make it easy for developers to write applications for its TVs.

Another point of improvement that LG hopes to make through the webOS software is the compatibility between smart TVs and other devices.

While LG did not say what other devices will become compatible with smart TVs, consumer electronics makers are envisioning households where consumers can easily control all kinds of home appliances and gadgets from one place.

Samsung Electronics, LG's home rival, is also seeking to make a television set as a center for controlling refrigerators, lighting and air-conditioning in a household, a concept that consumer electronics companies call "smart home.

Unveiled Sunday at a preview event for the Consumer Electronics Show, the device from French-based startup Kolibree aims "to reinvent oral care."

LAS VEGAS: Brush smarter. That's the message from the makers of what is billed as the world's first Internet-connected toothbrush.
Unveiled Sunday at a preview event for the Consumer Electronics Show, the device from French-based startup Kolibree aims "to reinvent oral care," according to co-founder Loic Cessot.
"The technology in the industry has not evolved for years," Cessot told AFP.
"The idea is not to brush stronger, but smarter."
The Kolibree toothbrush includes a sensor which detects how much tartar is being removed in a brushing. It also records brushing activity so users can maintain a consistent cleaning each time.
The device conveys the information wirelessly to a smartphone app - a particularly useful aid for parents who want to monitor the teeth cleaning efforts of small children, according to Cessot.
"When you use a normal toothbrush you never really know what you've cleaned. It might be 30%. The only person who really knows is the dentist."
But the app can tell users if they have missed hard-to-clean areas or are not getting a thorough brushing.
The app, which is open for developers to add on other programs, aims to increase motivation and make the experience more fun, said Cessot.
The self-funded startup created by Cessot and former Microsoft and Google executive Thomas Serval plans to release the toothbrush worldwide in the third quarter, getting a boost from a crowdsourcing effort.
Orders will be available initially through Kickstarter from $99 to $200, depending on the model and will include a free mobile app

If building a six-pack were easy almost everyone would have sexy abs. It's not only the actual effort that's hard, it's also knowing "how" to burn stomach fat correctly is a challenge.

Our goal is to show you the best and practical way to burn stomach fat, so you can finally flaunt a well toned stomach. We have Mike Jackson - Nutritional Consultant and Physique Transformation Specialist to help you get toned and sexy abs. Read on and burn the unwanted calories with these exercises to burn stomach fat quickly.

Exercises that burn stomach fat fast # 1: Running or walking
Okay, you're probably thinking, 'How does moving your legs shrink those love handles?' Well, the truth is there's no way to target belly fat. Your genetics get to decide where the fat settles in your body, so the best thing to do is start moving.

As you exercise, calories are burned and your body fat percentage decreases. So, exercising not only helps you lose belly fat, it also sheds fat from other areas. Running and walking are two of the best fat-burning exercises. Plus, the only equipment you need is a good pair of shoes. Between the two, running burns more calories, but walking really isn't too far behind.

Running and walking can be part of your interval training routine and do not forget to warm up and cool down if your take up running for weight loss.

Exercises that burn stomach fat fast # 2: Elliptical trainer
Some of us no longer have the strong joints we had as teenagers. Jogging is out of the question and walking doesn't cut it. The good news is elliptical trainers provide an intense, low impact cardio workout. In fact, a 145-lb. person can burn about 300 calories in 30 minutes on an elliptical trainer. That's about as many calories as running burns, but without the joint wear-and-tear.

Exercises that burn stomach fat fast # 3: Bicycling
Bicycling is another great low impact cardio exercise. Not to mention, it's a great way to travel or see the countryside. Depending on the speed and intensity the average person can burn between 250 to 500 calories during a 30-minute bike ride.

Exercises that burn stomach fat fast # 4: The bicycle exercise
Burning body and belly fat with cardio exercises is half the battle. Next is strengthening abdominal muscles so you have something to show once the fat is shed. In a recent study, ab exercises were ranked from best to worst. The bicycle exercise ranked as #1 because it requires abdominal stabilization, body rotation, and more abdominal muscle activity.

These are some bicycle exercises you can do before you hop on your bike:
-Lie on your back with hands behind your head
-Raise knees to your chest while lifting head and shoulders off the ground
-Bring the right elbow to your left knee and straighten the right leg
-Switch sides - bring the left elbow to your right knee and straighten the left leg
-Continue switching sides to simulate a pedaling motion
-Breathing should be relaxed and even
-Do 1-3 sets with 12-16 repetitions

Exercises that burn stomach fat fast #5: The Captain's chair leg raise
For this exercise you require a captain's chair which is found in most gyms. The chair has a padded back and armrests with grips. Your legs hang free.

-Stand on the chair and grab the hand bars
-Keep your back flat against the pad while raising knees to your chest
-Then lower legs back down
-For added intensity, keep legs straight when you raise them
-Do 1-3 sets with 12-16 repetitions

Exercises that burn stomach fat fast # 6: Exercise ball crunch
This exercise needs a lot of stabilization which engages more muscles. You'll need an exercise ball.

-Lie on the ball so your lower back is supported and feet are firmly planted on the ground
-Place hands across chest or behind the head
-Contract abs and lift your torso up and forward
-Lower back down
-Keep the ball stable during each crunch
-Exhale when you crunch; inhale when you lower back down
-Do 1-3 sets with 12-16 repetitions

Exercises that burn stomach fat fast # 7: Vertical leg crunch
The vertical leg crunch is similar to a regular crunch. But it requires you to keep your legs straight, which makes the abs work harder and increases the workout's intensity.

-Lie down with hands behind your head
-Put your legs straight up with knees crossed
-Flex abs to lift head and shoulders off the floor
-Lay back down
-Keep legs extended in the air the whole time
-Exhale when you flex; inhale when you lay back down
-Do 1-3 sets with 12-16 repetitions

Exercises that burn stomach fat fast # 8: Reverse crunch
The reverse crunch was also ranked above regular crunches as the 5th best exercise for strengthening core muscles.

-Lie flat on the floor with arms at your sides
-Cross your feet and lift them off the floor so your knees create a 90-degree angle
-Contract ab muscles and lift head and shoulders off the ground
-Exhale when you contract; inhale when you lower back down
-Do 1-3 sets with 12-16 repetitions

Getting toned abs just got easy
Successfully flattening your stomach is a matter of burning body fat and building muscle. The best way to burn body fat is through cardio exercises such as running, walking, elliptical training, and bicycling. With these exercises, burning stomach fat, shedding love handles, and building a six pack is completely do-able. So send your body the memo: flat abs are in style and it's time to get yours!

MUMBAI: The World champions of junior cricket have roared at the perfect time. With less than two months to go before they begin defending their Under-19 World Cup crown, India made an emphatic statement by winning the Asia Cup in Sharjah on Sunday, beating arch-rivals Pakistan by 40 runs in a thrillingfinal.

Put into bat, the Indian colts made 314 for four, with skipper Vijay Zol and Sanju Samson - two of the hottest young talents in India presently - smashing hundreds after India enjoyed a 65-run stand in just 6.4 overs, largely due to opener Ankush Bains, who smashed 47 (34b, 7x4, 1x6). Both made exactly 100.

While Zol's effort took him 120 balls, and included seven fours and a couple of sixes, Samson's knock came off merely 87 balls (8x4, 4x6). Both added 180 for the third wicket to ensure India finished with a massive total. Pakistan, in reply, were restricted to 287 for eight, as Kamran Gulam (102 not out) and skipper Sami Aslam's (87) efforts went in vain. For India, left-arm chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav took three for 72.

It is a triumph that should stand India in good stead for the forthcoming World Cup which will be held in UAE too.

"Ankush gave us a fabulous start and then both Samson and Zol, whose roles were critical, batted brilliantly before losing concentration on getting their hundreds. We should have got 360-odd but still got a reasonable total. We then bowled and fielded well to defend our score successfully against a very good Pakistan side. Even beating Sri Lanka in the semis wasn't easy. It was an excellent all-round performance by the boys and an ideal exposure to the conditions that will be prevalent during the World Cup. Both the teams enjoyed tremendous crowd support and the atmosphere of the final was electric. It was a joy to win this tournament with this lovely bunch," an elated Bharat Arun, coach of the India U-19 team, told TOI moments after the victory.

It was redemption time for the colts too. In the last Asia Cup, back in July 2012, India had to share the trophy with Pakistan after the final finished in a tie. In this edition, India had already lost to the Green Brigade once in the league stage - on December 31 - by two wickets.

"Pakistan won that game by a whisker. Before the final, our boys were fired up in the team meeting. I'm glad we pulled off a comfortable win in a tough match," Arun said, revealing an interesting fact - this team has as many as seven left-handers!

While the coach understandably chose to praise all his wards, he conceded that Maharashtra's Zol and Kerala's Samson were 'special boys.' "Both are technically sound. They don't play rash strokes. They have tremendous power and the gift of timing which enables them to clear boundaries comfortably. They have the experience of the IPL and the Ranji behind them now. They are in for a bigger league," Arun gushed.

Amongst the bowlers, he singled out Kuldeep Yadav and medium-pacers Deepak Hooda and pacer Avesh Khan for special praise.

"Yadav is a real talent. He has great attitude and he is a wicket-taking bowler. He can bowl well under pressure and batsmen would find it tough to hit him out of the attack."

Arun revealed that his wards were "too tired right now to celebrate". "They will turn out for their Ranji sides after returning. We will then have a camp for the World Cup before launching into the campaign."

Brief scores: India Under-19 314 for 8 (Zol 100, Samson 100) beat Pakistan Under-19 274 for 9 (Ghulam 102, Aslam 87*) by 40 runs.

Lose that paunch in just 10 days

Lose that paunch in just 10 days

Follow these easy-to-do tips and get rid of your tummy in 10 days...

Courtesy our party-hopping and binge-eating sprees in the last couple of months, thanks to the festive season, almost all of us are battling that unwanted bulge. In fact, fitting into our old dresses and slim-fit jeans is almost like a challenge. But worry not. Here are some simple tips, which, if followed properly, could help you get rid of your paunch in flat 10 days.

Drink lots of water
Water is essential for our system, as around 70% of our body constitutes water. However, too much of anything does not work. So, have around 2.5 to 3.5 litres of water every day. And make sure you avoid drinking cold water. Normal or lukewarm water will help you stay slimmer. Water flushes out toxins and hydrates the system. If you don't like water, sip on herbal and green tea. Deepshikha Agarwal, sports nutritionist, advocates going the anti-oxidant way with this. "This is a delicious way to include anti-oxidants in your diet. It can work wonders for your immune and digestive system."

Cut down on carbs
Many believe that going on a zero-carbs diet will help in a miraculous way. While one should cut down on it for quick results, the no-carbs way is a strict no-no. Pooja Makhija, clinical nutritionist, explains, "Carbs are our energy givers and should contribute 65-70% of the total calorie intake in a day. One can only improve stamina if one includes carbs in every meal, every day! Weight loss will also follow suit when the body is fuelled optimally to be able to burn fat."

Increase protein intake
Have baked chicken or fish with steamed vegetables for lunch and dinner. Skimmed milk and milk products work too. Having a protein-rich diet makes you feel full for longer. Make sure you include egg whites in your breakfast. Have small portions and ensure that you have at least five to six meals.

Stay away from fad diets
Crash diets can be extremely harmful, so stay away from them completely. Dr Smita Naram, Ayurvedic physician, says, "A diet with a combination of 30% protein, 60% vegetables and 10% carbohydrates is most beneficial for reducing weight." Eating regular food every two-three hours (don't go for snacking in between) is great when it comes to losing weight.

Eat slowly
Eat slowly and stop eating when you are about 70 to 80% full. Do not overeat. Eating fast and gulping down food results eating much more than our body needs.

Walk, and then walk some more
Go for a 45-minute brisk walk in the morning or evening. Wear clothes that are not too tight and comfortable shoes that are meant for walking. Start with a 30-minute walk and extend it to 45 minutes or one hour. Do this for 10 days without fail.

Crunches can save your day
Don't have time for the gym? Just do some warm-up exercises and then target your paunch — do crunches (See box). Do this everyday — twice a day if possible. (After all, you want to lose that paunch in 10 days, don't you?) Throughout the day, whether you are sitting or walking around, make sure that you pull in your stomach and keep your back straight.

Take up a de-stressing activity
Stress and depression can lead to a lot of unwarranted emotional eating. So, de-stress. Take up a favourite activity — do some meditation, read a book, watch some romantic comedies, play with your dog or take up a yoga or dance class.

Stay away from temptation
Every time you almost give up and reach for a chocolate bar, remind yourself what you really want — looking hot in a sexy LBD or being flabby and fat and hiding inside a loose ill-fitted outfit. And behave accordingly.

Basic crunches
Lie down on your exercise mat. Bend your knees and keep it parallel to the floor. Now put your hands behind your head and exhale and lift up your shoulder blades off the floor while you contract your stomach and reach for your knees.

Get more out of crunches
Do bicycle crunches. Paddle each of your legs in the air while you do the crunches.

Ban the following completely for the next 10 days:
- Red meat
- Sweets
- Canned foods
- Junk foods like burger, pizza, pasta etc
- Cold aerated drinks
- Canned juices (even the ones that say 'healthy' on the pack)
- All kinds of outside food
- Avoid over-eatin

The 27-year veteran is now a president, and gets the additional responsibilities of global delivery and service innovation.

BANGALORE: U B Pravin Rao is the new star in the Infosys pecking order. He was a senior vice president and global head of retail, consumer packaged goods, logistics and life sciences, and director of the Infosys Leadership Institute. The 27-year Infy veteran now becomes president, and gets the additional responsibilities of global delivery and service innovation, as also the business portfolios of resources & utilities, services, growth markets, cloud & mobility, and quality & productivity.

Former Infocians who have worked with him describe him as a people's person. "He's always very calm, quiet, known for delegating initiatives to his subordinates. He was a pleasure to work with. Since he was based in India, he was intimately connected to the operations side and was invariably part of committees involving HR. Swami Swaminathan, who last year retired from Infosys when he was head of the BPO business, said, "Pravin is a people's leader. He has built the retail practice ground up and demonstrated significant engagements with retail clients globally."

Rao, 52, holds a degree in electrical engineering from Bangalore University. He joined Infosys after college, in 1986. Over the years he has held a number of senior leadership roles such as head of infrastructure management services and delivery head for Europe.

B G Srinivas, the other newly appointed president, is a board member and has long been considered a contender to the CEO position in Infosys. He was the head of Europe, global head of financial services and insurance unit, and chairman of Infosys Lodestone. "This unit went on to become the company's largest horizontal unit, contributing 21% of revenue," says the company website. Dhar described the choice of Srinivas and Rao for the president's post as "great". "Both command the respect of people and both have experience running large business units," he said

BlackBerry sues American Idol host’s firm
BlackBerry has sued the company because it offers a physical keyboard that can be attached to some iPhones.
TORONTO: BlackBerry said it has filed a lawsuit against a company co-founded by American Idol host Ryan Seacrest that offers a physicalkeyboard that can be attached to some iPhones

The company, Typo Products, is currently taking pre-orders for the $99 keyboard, which features angled miniature keys similar to those used on many of BlackBerry's devices.

Canada's BlackBerry, a once dominant smartphone maker that has lost market share to the iPhone and other touchscreen devices, said Typo's keyboard infringes its own design.

The allegation has not been proven in court. Typo and Seacrest could not immediately be reached to comment on the legal proceedings.

"We are flattered by the desire to graft our keyboard onto other smartphones, but we will not tolerate such activity without fair compensation for using our intellectual property and our technological innovations," Steve Zipperstein, BlackBerry's chief legal officer, said in a statement.

BlackBerry posted billions in losses in recent quarters as its latest devices sold poorly, but it has maintained a loyal niche of customers who prefer to type on a physical keyboard.

The BlackBerry complaint is case no. 3:14-cv-23 in the United States District Court for the northern district of California.

HTC One 2 specifications leaked

HTC One 2 specifications leaked

HTC One 2 specifications leaked
Twitter user @evleaks has posted alleged specifications of HTC M8, the successor to the HTC One.

Taiwanese handset giant HTC is said to be working on its next flagship smartphone which is rumoured to be codenamed the HTC M8 orHTC One 2

A number of reports claiming to shed some light on the phone's specifications, features and and design, have already surfaced online, though the company is yet to make an announcement related to it. The latest to join the bandwagon is Twitter user @evleaks who had also posted images and details related to specifications of the HTC One, last year.

According to @eveleaks the HTC One successorwould be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor (MSM8974), with 2GB of RAM. Similar to the HTC One, the M8 will sport a full-HD (1080p) display with slightly bigger screen size at 5-inch.

The HTC One successor will feature an UltraPixel rear camera and a 2.1MP front camera, as per the Twitter user. He also adds that the phone will support Gigabit WiFi (802.11ac) and run Android 4.4 KitKat OS with Sense 6.0, a new version of HTC's UI skin, running on top.

It is worth pointing out that @evleaks has called these specifications 'preliminary,' which implies that there could be some changes, in the future or perhaps the specifications are of a prototype, which is still under development.

The user had earlier said that the phone will launch in the first quarter of 2014 in the US.

Previously, a Chinese website had reported that the HTC M8 will have 5-inch or 5.2-inch display with 2K (2048x1080p) resolution and run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz. The report had also hinted at HTC Sense 6.0 UI and 3GB RAM, with availability in early 2014.

It had also featured purported images of HTC One's successor, showing that it will follow the same design language as its predecessor, but will be thinner and have more rounded edges. The handset is also expected to sport a fingerprint scanner on the back
