“Demand For Taxation Professionals And Financial Controllers Will Increase In 2014”

Interview Of The Day: “Demand For Taxation Professionals And Financial Controllers Will Increase In 2014”
Interview Of The Day: “Demand For Taxation Professionals And Financial Controllers Will Increase In 2014”
Nicolas Dumoulin, regional director, Michael Page India, shares the job outlook for the Finance discipline.
How is the Indian recruitment market for the Finance discipline?
The Indian recruitment market is a challenging yet highly promising environment. The Finance jobseeker market is fairly active and many jobseekers are always exploring opportunities, however they can be somewhat indecisive and often require coaching during transitions. On the client side, the market is saturated with low fees and volume-focused competitors that have reduced client trust in consulting companies because of poor quality, especially at the mid level. During the year, we have seen that clients have been hesitant in closing positions because of the uncertainty in the market and have also been highly focused on the cost of recruiting. This has resulted in a lot of positions taking longer to be filled. The positions that were in high demand during 2013 are in the area of tax and internal audit.
How was the recruitment market activity for the Finance discipline throughout 2013?
Recruitment market activity within Finance has fluctuated during the year. We saw a slowdown in recruitment from August to September 2013, mostly due to the fact that companies were reviewing their budget/headcount for 2014 and postponed all non-critical recruitment. Nevertheless, the Michael Page Finance team has seen an increase in the number of mandates outsourced mainly because of new client development by our teams in Mumbai and Delhi.
What are the expectations for recruitment market activity in India for the Finance discipline in 2014 – the key themes or trends that are emerging?
We expect 2014 to be the next step in the growth of Michael Page Finance. With the world economy growing again, we expect more and more international players coming into the market and looking for a reliable partner to work with for their recruitment needs. We expect that we will be leveraging our growth on our current international client base. In addition, we also see an increase in demand for a more specialised approach of recruitment based on financial profiles, due to the growing complexity of the finance function at the middle and senior level. With 20 specialised consultants in our finance team, we are in a very strong position to benefit from this market trend.
Hot jobs in Finance in 2014:

For 2014, we will see an increase in the demand for professionals who are specialists in the field of taxation, as the focus of the government to increase tax income will force companies to have stronger tax department relationships in place. In addition, we foresee a growing demand for financial controllers, because market sentiment has improved for foreign companies entering and up scaling their business in India. The main drivers for this are the recovering developed economies.

A garlic a day for good health

A garlic a day for good health

Add a couple of cloves of garlic to your diet to boost your immunity

Garlic with its antiviral and antibacterial properties helps boost your immunity and keeps you looking fresh and healthy. While in some cases garlic supplements are available and prescribed as a preventive measure for common cold, it's actually very easy to incorporate a few cloves of garlic in our daily meals. Here's how you can consume garlic without having to deal with that awful breadth.

Add it to your soup: Soup itself is a very good decongestant and helps warm up the body. Make your own vegetable or chicken broth soup at home and add garlic to it to enhance the flavour as well as get its antibiotic effect. Here's what you can do:

Bring two cups of water to a simmer over medium-high heat in a small saucepan. Add garlic (grated and made into a paste, for better flavouring), some thyme or oregano seasoning, one tablespoon of olive oil and salt to taste to the water. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes until the broth is fragrant. Add green vegetables (fresh peas, diced carrots, beans, spring onions, chopped capsicum, or other vegetables of your choice) to the broth and simmer uncovered for another five to eight minutes until the vegetables are tender. Taste and adjust salt. Beat one egg in a bowl, and add a little freshly ground pepper to it. Remove a small ladleful of the soup, and whisk it into the egg to temper it. Turn the heat off under the soup, and stir in the egg mixture. The egg should cloud the soup but shouldn't scramble. Add some extra pepper on the top, pour out in a bowl and enjoy.

Make your own garlic drink: The smell of garlic makes it difficult to be consumed raw, but when you use other ingredients with an equally powerful taste, it's easier. Here's a drink you can try:

Take a large saucepan and add three cups of water. Grate five cloves of garlic and add it to the water. Cover the lid and bring it to boil so that the garlic fumes don't escape. Turn off the heat after its boiled, add 10ml honey and the juice of one lemon to the garlic-water and stir well. Strain it into cups and sip it, while inhaling the garlic fumes.

Try garlic vinegar: Desperate times need desperate measure, and if you are dealing with a stubborn cold, you must try this garlic-vinegar recipe which is sure to benefit you instantly.

In a medium sized bowl, add vinegar (at least half the bowl). Mince one large bulb of garlic (at least 10-15 cloves) and add it to the vinegar. Cover it and let it sit for about an hour. The vinegar absorbs all the raw qualities of the garlic, making it a really strong solution. Strain it and drink the solution when you need immediate effects. Otherwise, use it as a salad dressing or in other recipes that use vinegar

Google offering free Chromebooks to Indian schools

Google is expanding its initiative to offer free Chromebook laptops in schools in India with a pilot in four schools in Andhra Pradesh.

HYDERABAD: Google is expanding to India an initiative to popularize the use of its Chromebook laptops in schools, starting with a pilot in four schools in Andhra Pradesh.

The internet search company that makes the world's most popular software for smartphones and tablets will initially make available 25Chromebooks to each school and train the teachers and instructors in the use of the required software applications.

"The school instructors will teach core subjects using applications and software. We believe with interactive learning, the student will understand better and will take interest in the subjects," Ponnala Lakshmaiah, the state's minister for information technology, said.

Chromebooks require an internet connection to use, and most of the data, such as files that users work on, are stored on Google's storage network connected to the internet. Earlier this month, Samsung released a Chromebook model specifically for the Indian market. Schools are among the most popular market segments for the Chromebooks.

Google is running this programme in some 3,000 schools in the US, Singapore and Malaysia, a Google executive with direct knowledge of the plan to expand it to India told ET. The executive requested not to be named as Google was yet to announce the plan.

"Google aims to increase access to information and knowledge for all students, and encourages tools that support effective teaching and learning in the classroom, but we have nothing to announce at this time," a company spokeswoman said in an emailed statement.

The pilot project, in collaboration with Andhra Pradesh department of information technology, will start next month, a senior government official said. It will be launched in three government schools and one private school in Jangaon in Warangal district.

After the pilot, which benefits students of grades nine and 10, discussions are on to expand the programme statewide, the government official said.

The state's IT department will provide the schools with Wi-Fi internet connectivity with 1Mbps speed and power backups for unhindered use. Each school will be assigned dedicated mentors who would train the teachers and instructors, the official said.

Training will include using the Google Apps Training Center, an online learning environment that offers six modules including Google Apps Education Edition, Apps Mail, Calendar, Docs, Sites, and other tools

Apple again seeks ban on 20 Samsung devices in US
Apple is again seeking to ban some of Samsung's products in the US that were found to have infringed on Apple's patents last year.
SYDNEY: Tech giant Apple is reportedly again seeking to ban some of rival Samsung's products in the US that were found to have infringed on Apple's patents last year.

Apple asked US District Judge Lucy Koh to bar sales of more than 20 Samsung smartphones and tablets, such as the Galaxy S 4G and Galaxy Tab 10.1 that were found infringing.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Koh had rejected Apple's bid for a sales ban on the infringing Samsung devices after the 2012 verdict, but a US federal appeals court on November 18 said that Apple could pursue an injunction targeting some of its rival's products.

The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington said that Apple could tailor its request to focus on infringement of patents covering smartphone features but can't block Samsung products for infringing patented designs.

The report said that last month, Apple won more than $290 million from Samsung in a damages trial stemming from the same case in which Apple is seeking its sales ban request.

Apple and Samsung have been embroiled in a global battle on patent infringements and the total damaged owned by Samsung now stand at $930 million.

Samsung starts Galaxy Grand 2 pre-orders in India
Samsung has started taking pre-orders for its upcoming Galaxy Grand 2 phablet in the Indian market for Rs 2,000.
NEW DELHI: Samsung has started taking pre-orders for its upcoming Galaxy Grand 2 phablet in the Indian market. The company is taking advance bookings for the handset at Rs 2,000, while the remaining amount has to be paid when it hits the market. The South Korean manufacturer unveiled the device earlier this week, but did not reveal its price.

The Galaxy Grand 2 will be available in the market from January 2014 and will be priced between Rs 22,990 and Rs 24,990. It is the successor to the Galaxy Grand that was launched earlier this year and was a big hit in the country. This new phablet has a larger screen, more RAM and bigger battery than its predecessor.

Samsung's latest phablet Galaxy Grand 2 has a 5.25-inch HD screen and 1.2GHz quad-core processor. It comes with 8GB internal storage, up to 64GB microSD card support and 1.5GB RAM. On the back, it has an 8MP camera with LED flash and sports a 1.9MP camera in front.

Some of the proprietary apps that come preinstalled in Galaxy Grand 2 are Story Album, S Translator, S Travel, Sound & Shot, Samsung Hub, Samsung Link and Group Play.

NEW DELHI: Finding a good gaming laptop in India is a daunting task. Only a handful of companies sell gaming laptops here. Alienware and Asus come to mind, for example. The other laptop makers rely on their multimedia machines to cater to consumers who play video games.

That is not the best solution for gamers.

At the same time, gaming-specific laptops from Asus and Dell Alienware are very expensive. It is either you go all out and spend over a Rs 1 lakh or settle for something that is a gaming laptop only in the name. Lenovo Y510P is an oddity in this market. And we mean that in a good way. You don't have to shell out over Rs 1 lakh for it. Yet, it packs in the hardware and features that make it a blue-blooded gaming machine, even though Lenovo also calls it a "premium multimedia laptop".

While hardware is part of the story, it is important to know if it translates into a good experience. Can Y510P offer the gaming experience that is worth its asking price? We find out.

All black but with a dash of red
The key feature of Y510P is that it tries to meld the difference between a gaming laptop and an all-purpose laptop. While other manufacturers have tried to do this by creating a big screen laptop and then putting a graphics card in it, Lenovo has a different approach. In Y510P, the Chinese firm focuses on the gaming first and then modifies the machine to make it suitable for other consumers.

This means Y510P is relatively slimmer and lighter than other gaming laptops with a 15.6-inch screen. It weighs 2.7kg, which makes it one of the most portable gaming laptops in India, considering other similar gaming machines weigh over 3kg.

In terms of build quality and design, Y510P hits check all the right boxes. Unlike the angular and flashier design of Alienware laptops, Y510P has traditional design. It uses a 'boxy' design with clean lines. The lid of the laptop has a covering of anodized aluminium but the rest of the body uses black plastic shell. Despite the lack of full-metal body, the laptop feels very sturdy. There are no loose parts or rough edges. The quality of plastic is good and feels durable.

Lenovo adds the style - it is a gaming laptop, after all - to Y510P with the keyboard. The keys are backlit and glow red in the dark. The speaker grills - placed on the top of the keyboard on the left and right corner of the laptop -- too have the red accent. Overall, Y510P has a design that looks elegant yet playful.

Another key highlight of Y510P is the 'ultrabay'. This is basically the slot occupied by an optical drive in a laptop. In Y510P too it is occupied by an optical (DVD) drive by default. But if you want you can remove it and add a hard disk or an additional graphics card accessory to it. The hard drive and graphics card accessories are sold by Lenovo separately.

Good gaming but poor battery life
In terms of key components, Y510P is above average. Let's start with the screen. The 15.6-inch screen uses a TN panel - standard for almost all laptops - but the quality is good. The colours look punchy andvibrant on Y510P when the screen is directly in front of you. The horizontal viewing angles are decent. But vertical viewing angles are not up to the mark and colours fade if you tilt the screen. Sadly, this is a problem that affects almost all laptops in the market. Another plus point of the Y510P screen is the resolution. It has a FullHD (1080P) resolution. Text and videos on Y510P look clear and sharp.

Like all other Lenovo laptops, Y510P has chiclet-style keys with a gentle inward curve. They offer a good amount of tactile feedback and are spaced well. This makes typing on Y510P feel natural. The trackpad is large and has smooth surface. Though it doesn't offer the sort of effortless glide that laptops like MacBook Pro have, it is responsive. The touchpad supports multi-finger gestures.

Another highlight of Y510P is its loud speakers. Alienwares and some of the Asus laptops made specifically for gamers sound better, but for its price Y510P sports speakers that do the job well. Whether you are playing games or watching a film, these speakers are powerful enough to fill a small room with good sound.

The default configuration of Y510P uses a Core i7 4700MQ processor, Nvidia GT755M graphics card and 8GB RAM. It comes with Windows 8. This is a fast laptop and it shows when you use it. Most of the everyday tasks, like browsing web, working with office documents and editing photos etc, are handled with ease.

In gaming too Y510P excels. We played Games like Call of Duty Black Ops 2, Crysis 2 and Battlefield 3 and Y510P mostly handled them fine. In Call of Duty Black Ops 2, the laptop played the game at FullHD resolution with almost all settings tuned for best graphics with average frames per second (FPS) of little over 40. By tweaking a few more settings we managed to achieve average FPS of around 50, which is good enough for smooth gameplay. For Crysis 2 and Battlefield 3, we had to reduce the game to medium settings to achieve 50FPS at FullHD resolution. However, keep in mind that these are very demanding games and even with medium settings they look great at FullHD resolution.

Recent games like Battlefield 4 and Crysis 3 require top notch hardware. Most laptops cannot handle these games at FullHD with all settings tuned for best graphics. To run these games at their optimum, a laptop needs a minimum of two top-end graphics cards. Y510P has only one. However, for its price it offers ample performance and will handle these games at a reduced resolution.

One blemish in the Y510P performance is its battery life. The powerful core hardware requires lots of battery. In video playback tests, where we looped a FullHD video clip, Y510P lasted a little over three hours. If you are going to play games, the battery life is likely to be even less.

Should you buy it?
The answer to easy - yes. If you need a powerful laptop that can handle almost all video games, including recent ones, Lenovo Y510P with a market price of around Rs 75,000 is one of the best value-for-money laptop. Some Alienware laptops are more powerful than Y510P but then they cost almost double of what it costs.

Even if gaming is not high priority for you but you want a powerful laptop, Lenovo Y510P makes a lot of sense. It has an above average screen, keyboard and touchpad. It looks stylish, has good build quality and nice backlit keys. The only downsides are that it is not very portable compared to other "multimedia" laptops and the battery life is poor. But when we put the pros and cons together, we see that Y510P has more pros than cons. It is not perfect but it is one of the better laptops you can buy in the current market.

Donkey milk sells at Rs 2,000 per litre!
G Lingamma, a woman spotted with a pair of donkeys and surrounded by milk buyers at Sivajipalem, said a group of 20 people had arrived in the district few days ago from Mancherial town in Adilabad district of Telangana along with 15 pairs of donkeys to sell donkey’s milk that is believed to be a remedy for curing asthma and any respiratory problems in newborns.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Donkeys may be the butt of jokes but the nutritional quality of donkey milkseems to be no laughing matter. After all it was said to be the secret of Egyptian princessCleopatra's glowing beauty.

And now, despite the bifurcation trouble brewing in the state, a group of nomads from the north Telangana region have arrived in north coastal Andhra with a herd of donkeys and are doing brisk business selling donkey milk that they claim has medicinal value for newborn babies.

G Lingamma, a woman spotted with a pair of donkeys and surrounded by milk buyers at Sivajipalem in the city on Thursday, said a group of 20 people comprising four families had arrived in the district few days ago from Mancherial town in Adilabad district of Telangana along with 15 pairs of donkeys to sell donkey's milk that is believed to be a remedy for curing asthma and any respiratory problems in newborns.

"We are selling a cup (25 ml) of fresh donkey milk for Rs 200. If anybody wants it in bulk we can sell it for Rs 2000 per litre. Despite the steep prices, people who believe in donkey milk therapy are buying it without trying to bargain. Each one of us is currently able to earn nearly Rs 700-800 per day by selling the milk in the city. We had come here last year too and after completing our tour of Vizag city we will go to Vijayawada," Lingamma said.

Meanwhile, housewife K Satyavathi, who bought 75 ml milk from Lingamma, said they used to buy donkey milk from Salur in Vizianagaram district. "My daughter recently gave birth to a baby boy. I was very happy when I heard that the donkey milk seller is roaming in our street. It' good for my grandson's health as feeding donkey milk to a newborn is nothing but administering good ayurveda medicine," Satyavathi explained.

Concurring with Satyavathi's statement, a senior ayurveda doctor, V Suseela, from Sri Ayurveda Health Centre Srinagar, said that donkey milk is the best medicine for newborns suffering from asthma, tuberculosis and throat infections. Explaining its medicinal value, V Venkateswara Rao, joint director, department of animal husbandry, Visakhapatnam district, said that though donkey milk is similar to human breast milk, it is relatively poor in protein and fat but rich in lactose. "It has been used since ancient times to battle asthma and respiratory allergies and is fed to babies aged between 6-8 months for good health. The milk also enjoys a good demand in metros like Bangalore and Chennai. It also helps skin become smooth and glowing and is used in cosmetic products. It is no coincidence that Cleopatra used to bathe daily in donkey's milk and 700 donkeys were milked everyday just for her," Venkateswara Rao said. According to him, donkey milk is very famous in European countries and cheese made from donkey milk is the world's costliest dairy product
