Internet giant Google turns 15
Internet search giant Google, which initially set shop in a garage but now has more than 70 offices in more than 40 global locations, including India, turned 15.

NEW DELHI: Internet search giant Google, which initially set shop in a garage but now has more than 70 offices in more than 40 global locations, including India, turned 15.

Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who had met at university in 1995, incorporated the firm September 4, 1998.

Originally called BackRub, it was eventually named Google.

Since then, it has become synonymous with internet searching.

And one can use Gmail in more than 50 languages.

Befitting the occasion, Google has named the next version of the company's mobile operating system (OS) as Android KitKat after Nestle's popular chocolate and wafer confectionery.

KitKat will be Android 4.4. "We couldn't imagine a better name for our Android K release than the tasty chocolate that's been a favorite among the team since the early days of Android," said Marc Vanlerberghe, director of Android marketing.

According to Google, Android software powers more than a billion smartphones or tablets worldwide.

Smartphones powered by Google's Android software increased their global market share as iPhones lost ground in the absence of new models being unleashed by Apple, the International Data Corporation reported last month.

There are also reports Google will launch a Glass app store sometime next year.

Nestle said that to mark the release of Android KitKat, more than 50 million specially brandedKitKat bars will be available in 19 countries, including India.

The packs will lead consumers to the website www.android.com/kitkat where they will have the opportunity to win prizes, including a limited number of Google Nexus 7 tablets, and credits to spend in Google Play.

A small number of Android robot-shaped KitKat bars will be offered as prizes in selected markets

HTC Butterfly S has made its way to the Indian smartphone market at Rs 52,428, taking the crown of the most expensive smartphone in the country.

NEW DELHI: HTC Butterfly S has made its way to Indian market, taking the crown of the most expensive smartphone in the country. Online retailer Saholic has listed this handset on its website at Rs 52,428, making it the priciest base model of any smartphone in the market as of now. The listing on Saholic shows that the official price of Butterfly S is Rs 60,300 and deliveries will start from September 11.

Its predecessor, the Butterfly, held the crown of India's most expensive Android phone at the time of launch, before ceding the position to the recently-launched Sony Xperia Z Ultra. The corresponding 16GB Apple iPhone 5 costs Rs 45,500, while its top-end 64GB variant has been priced at Rs 59,500.

The all-new Butterfly S has a 5-inch screen with 1920x1080p resolution and 441ppi pixel density. The phone runs on the 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 processor (that powers the Samsung Galaxy S4) and comes with 2GB RAM. This device packs 16GB onboard storage and supports expansion up to 64GB via microSD cards. HTC also offers 25GB of free Dropbox storage with the phone.

HTC has included its UltraPixel technology in the 4MP rear camera of Butterfly S; the front camera of this handset has resolution of 2.1MP and a LED flash is placed on the back. Connectivity options in the phone include 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0 and NFC. The phone runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean), topped with the manufacturer's proprietary Sense user interface.

The HTC Butterfly S will compete against the new crop of phones with full HD screens, including Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia Z, LG Optimus G Pro and its siblings HTC One and Butterfly. Other rivals are Apple iPhone 5, Nokia Lumia 925 and BlackBerry Z10 and Q10.

Butterfly S has been listed on HTC's India website since July, but the company has not given its price on the official listing page. Other e-commerce players like Flipkart and Snapdeal have not listed the phone on their website as of now

Indian engineer gets $12,500 bounty for finding a Facebook bug that let anyone delete pictures

Indian engineer gets $12,500 bounty for finding a Facebook bug that let anyone delete pictures

facebook-laptop-635.jpg
Facebook had a security bug that could be exploited to delete any image on the social networking site posted by anyone, without the original poster's knowledge and approval.
Interestingly, an Indian electronics and communications engineer, Arul Kumar, discovered this vulnerability and shared it with Facebook under its Whitehat bug reporting program, winning a $12,500 bounty in the process.
The 21-year old engineer from Tamil Nadu, discovered that the mobile version of Facebook's Support Dashboard, which allows users to flag and report a picture for removal, could be exploited to remove any photograph posted by any Facebook user.
When a user sends a photo removal request through the Support Dashboard, usually Facebook takes a look and decides if it should be removed or not. If Facebook decides not to remove it, then the user has the option of sending a message to the user who has posted the picture with a request to remove the same picture. The request also contains a link, clicking on which leads to the removal of the photo.
Kumar discovered that while sending a removal request, a user can manually modify the Photo_id and the photo owner's Profile_id parameters, following which the photo removal link can be sent to one's own Facebook ID and used to delete the photo without the original uploader's knowledge. Using the same method, any picture on Facebook could be deleted without the involvement of the user who originally posted the picture.
As per Kumar, the same exploit could have been used for removing photos posted by even verified users, fan pages and groups and from status updates, photo albums, suggested posts and comments.
When Kumar first shared the vulnerability with Facebook, it was dismissed, with the Facebook security team unable to delete any pictures through the suggested hack. Following this, Kumar sent Facebook a proof of concept video demonstrating the bug through a dummy account. The second attempt was fruitful and the Facebook security team was able to see the vulnerability.

Android 4.4 to be called KitKat; Android activations top one billion

Android 4.4 to be called KitKat; Android activations top one billion

android_kitkat.jpg
Gimme a break, Google. Break me off a piece of that Kit Kat bar.

The tech giant, which is known for nick-naming its Android mobile operating systems for smartphones and tablets after desserts, has for the first time chosen a brand-name candy for version 4.4 that's expected to launch this fall: Kit Kat, the chocolate candy bar with the well-known "Gimme a Break" jingle. Kit Kat packaging will show Android's green robot mascot breaking a Kit Kat bar.

Financial terms weren't disclosed for the sweet deal between Google and Hershey Co., which makes Kit Kat. But the deal shows that naming a stadium or sponsoring a TV show can be seen as old school. The latest marketing craze may be to slap a brand name on a tech product.

Google approached Hershey about six to nine months ago for permission to use the name, said Jennifer Podhajsky, vice president of U.S. chocolate at Hershey, which licenses the Kit Kat brand in the U.S., while Nestle owns the worldwide brand.

Podhajsky said that Kit Kat's jingle is a good fit for people taking a break to look at their smartphones or tablets. She added that the deal appeals to Hershey because Android hits the sweet spot of Kit Kat eaters, who are typically between the ages of 18 and 34.

"Kit Kat consumers are young, vibrant consumers of candy and chocolate bars, and that's a nice match with Android," Podhajsky said.

The Kit Kat name was unexpected since tech pundits have speculated for months that the next operating system would be called Key Lime Pie. Marc Vanlerberghe, director of Android Marketing, said the name was chosen because Kit Kat bars have been a "favorite go-to snack among the team since the early days of Android."

The Android 4.4 Kit Kat system is expected to launch in October.

The software is now running on more than 1 billion smartphones and tablets throughout the world, making it the world's most widely used mobile operating system, Android chief Sundar Pichai revealed on Twitter.

Apple sends invites for September 10 special event, new iPhones expected

Apple sends invites for September 10 special event, new iPhones expected

Apple-invite.jpg
After a flurry of rumours, we now have official confirmation from Apple that it's hosting a special event on September 10 in San Francisco, where it's expected to announce two new iPhones and the final version of iOS 7, the next iteration of its mobile OS.
Apple has started sending invites for the special event according to a number of Apple-focused publications including Jim Dalrymple's The Loop. The event will be held at Apple's Cupertino headquarters and will start at 10am Pacific Time.
The picture accompanying the invite features a White Apple logo surrounded with circles in different colours, in line with the colourful new UI of iOS 7 and perhaps representing the colourful shells of the iPhone 5C, the alleged budget iPhone. The image is marked by a 'This should brighten everyone's day' message.
A number of rumours including some by credible publications and journalists such as AllThingsD and Jim Dalrymple, had confirmed September 10 as the most probable date for Apple hosting a special event to announce the next generation iPhone, iPhone 5S and the low cost iPhone, iPhone 5C.
The iPhone 5S is expected to come with a brand new Apple chip, the A7, alongside 1GB of LPDDR3 RAM, retaining the form factor of the iPhone 5. A 128GB storage variant of the phone has also been rumoured. The iPhone 5S is likely to come with a larger f2.0 aperture compared to the iPhone 5, that comes with f2.4 aperture. It's also likely to sport a fingerprint reader.
The low-cost iPhone or iPhone 5C has leaked several times. Alleged pictures of the iPhone 5C have revealed a plastic polycarbonate body back panel in White, Blue, Red, Yellow and Green colours, a round camera lens and LED flash, Apple logo and iPhone branding. It's expected to be powered by a dual-core CPU, and have a 4-inch screen, just like the iPhone 5, with a resolution of 640x1136 pixels. The iPhone 5C is rumoured to have 1GB of RAM, and come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage variants. It'a also likely to sport an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.2-megapixel front facing camera camera and run iOS 7 complete with Siri which would be available in English, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Italian and Spanish.
The iPhone is usually made available to the public in major markets including US, Canada, France, Japan, Hong Kong, UK, and Singapore, around a week after the official announcement. Rumours have indicated that Apple will start selling the iPhone starting September 20

Microsoft to slash prices of Nokia Lumia smartphones as it targets India as one of the main growth markets

Microsoft to slash prices of Nokia Lumia smartphones as it targets India as one of the main growth markets

The deal will make Microsoft a hardware-software-services player and better position it to take on its aggressive global and local rivals.
The deal will make Microsoft a hardware-software-services player and better position it to take on its aggressive global and local rivals.

NEW DELHI: Microsoft Corp's dramatic acquisition of Nokia's global cellphone business will result in a reduction in prices of Lumia handsets in most markets, including India, next year, possibly altering the dynamics of the country's fast-growing smartphone segment, say analysts.

Microsoft early Tuesday morning (India time) said it would buy Finland-based Nokia's phone business and license its patents for over $7 billion, in a last-ditch attempt to compete in the mobile handset market dominated globally by Apple and Samsung.

The deal will make Microsoft a hardware-software-services player and better position it to take on its aggressive global and local rivals, say analysts and industry executives. They add that India, where only about 10% of the 870 million mobile phone users own smartphones, could be a key growth market for the Redmond-headquartered company.

But, some also feel that Microsoft may focus exclusively on smartphones, and exit the feature phone segment, which accounts for more than 90% of India's handsets.

The deal will make Microsoft a hardware-software-services player and better position it to take on its aggressive global and local rivals.
Rajiv Kaul, a former managing director at Microsoft India, told ET that the deal would imply that goodquality devices would flow in at lower prices into the Indian market. Device costs could go down by $30-40 (approx Rs 2,040-2,720) a handset, he said. "Much like Google Nexus phones of comparable specifications are cheaper by $30-40 and in some cases even $100 (Rs 6,800) than rivals."

Nick Spencer, senior practice director, ABI Research, a New Yorkbased market research firm, said prices of the entry-level Nokia Lumia 520 could almost halve to less than $100 in some months from the time the deal closes in the first quarter of 2014.

If this plays out, some say domestic players such as Micromax, Karbonn and Lava, and even South Korea's Samsung, which have left Nokia way behind in the smartphone sweepstakes in India, could get pulled into a price war in the segment. Nokia 520 costs about Rs 9,200 in India while domestic handset makers such as Micromax, Karbonn and Lava sell phones with similar specifications starting at around at Rs 3,500. Samsung prices its entrylevel smartphone at around Rs 5,000.

A significant reduction in the price of Nokia devices could stir up the market and force its competitors to retaliate. BlackBerry, which doesn't have any phone in the sub-Rs 6,000 range, too could be hurt by a potential price churn at the lower end of the smartphone segment.

A BlackBerry executive declined comment. "A preloaded software on a device, economies of scale, greater investment in product development that clearly wasn't happening in Nokia's case, and consolidated distribution channel together will help drive handset costs down," said Prashant Singhal of Ernst & Young. Analysts broadly concur that Microsoft would likely reduce prices only to the extent arising out of operational efficiencies. But, one can't rule out heavy price cuts if the company decides to get aggressive in customer acquisitions, especially in emerging markets like India.

Lava co-founder Hari OmBSE 0.00 % Rai, however, said a price war was unlikely. "Microsoft phones will be cheaper than the current models they (Nokia) have, but only marginally, as the cost of hardware is almost same for all players." Marketers say given Nokia's laggard image, it might be a challenge for Lumia phones to give their rivals a run for their money.
Nokia sells 12 Lumia models in India at different price points, with the most expensive model costing Rs 33,000. While this range of phones witnessed huge growth globally when it was launched in December 2011, it has not been a big hit in India so far. Nokia ceded its leadership position in India to Samsung in the last fiscal ended March 2013, after dominating the market since its entry in 1995.

From a peak market share of over 70%, the Finnish handset maker's share fell to 27% in 2013. But its decline started a few years ago when it was caught unawares by the 'dual-SIM handset' revolution and was late to respond with its own offerings. Spencer from ABI Research said the fallout of the latest deal could be that Microsoft moves the Nokia business out of feature phones to focus on smartphones. India is Nokia's second-largest market and is at present dominated by feature phones, which account for a bulk of the Finnish company's sales as well.

Any move out of the feature phone market — one that still accounts for 90% of the overall handset market in India — will present an opportunity for other local as well as Asian feature phone makers.

At the same time, India's underpenetrated and fast-growing smartphone market will be an attractive proposition for Microsoft. Consultancy firm McKinsey estimates that the next over 200 million Internet users in India are likely to be on wireless mobile devices by 2015. "There's a huge untapped smartphone market in emerging economies from India, Asia, Africa to Latin America," said Katyayan Gupta, mobility analyst, Asia-Pacific, Forrester Research. Nokia owns a manufacturing facility in Chennai, where it makes mainly its feature phones but no smartphones.

A recent media report said the company in June wrote to the Indian government, complaining that it could shut down manufacturing in the country as it had become the "least favourable market" and that the "political risk" of operating in India may impact its future investment decisions. The report suggested that Nokia, one of India's top handset maker by sales, is upset that it wasn't getting the value-added-tax refunds it was promised for 10 years for setting up the plant in an SEZ in Tamil Nadu.

Tata Steel
BSE 1.97 % has emerged as the top gainer among metal stocks, rising 40% in the past month as its European operations performed better. "Europe is showing signs of recovery while rupee depreciation is aiding to protect margins in slowing India, helping put a bottom to Tata Steel's earnings," said a recent note by Macquarie. Indian stocks have, in fact, even outpaced their global rivals during the past month.

Stock prices of Tata Steel's global rivals Posco, Nippon and JFE Holding have fallen between 2% and 5% in this period. HindalcoBSE 3.26 % gained 22% in the past month, outperforming its rivals BHP Billiton (gained 2.5%) and Alcoa (fell by 3%).

China's steel production also picked up in July to 6.2%, boosting global crude steel production for the month by 2.7% to 132 million tonnes. With rupee depreciating by 20% against the dollar in the past three months, the fear of higher imports has subsided as domestic prices are at a discount to imported landed prices.

"We see an improvement in the global economy with PMI indices of euro zone showing expansion along with other major economies," said Ashish Kejriwal, analyst at Elara Capital. "The improvement in demand helps steel producers to pass on the rise in raw material prices and maintain gross margins."

Google on Tuesday said the next version ofAndroid will be called "KitKat" in keeping with its penchant for giving tasty names to its software for powering mobile devices.

"Since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert," the California-based technology titan said in a blog post.

"As everyone finds it difficult to stay away from chocolate we decided to name the next version of Android after one of our favorite chocolate treats."

The list of Android software names over the years includes Cupcake, Donut, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean.

In a promotion deal, Google is enticing people with chances to win Android-powered Nexus 7 tablets or credit at its online Play shop by buying KitKat candy bars featuring Android robot icons on wrappers.

Android software powers more than a billion smartphones or tablets worldwide, according to Google.

Smartphones powered by Google's Android software increased their global market share as iPhones lost ground in the absence of new models being unleashed by Apple, the International Data Corporation reported last month.

Android's share of the smartphone market grew to 79.3 percent in the second quarter while that of iPhone slipped to 13.2 percent from 16.6 percent in the same three-month period last year, according to IDC figures.

Apple is "well positioned" to recapture market share with the release later this year of a new iPhone and the next-generation iOS mobile operating system, according to IDC mobile phone research team manager Ramon Llamas.

Apple on Tuesday sent out invitations to a September 10 event at its California headquarters where new iPhones models were expected to be unveiled.

5 ways SMEs can beat big companies to attract top talent

5 ways SMEs can beat big companies to attract top talent

5 ways SMEs can beat big companies to attract top talent
The adage ‘size does matters’ holds true when it comes to attracting top talent. How do small organisations survive this war for talent? Read on!

The adage ‘size does matters’ holds true when it comes to attracting top talent. As large (read well known brands) organisations can easily attract and hire top talent in their respective sectors, hiring managers or business owners of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have to fight for the same talent. How do small organisations survive this war for talent?
Brand the Benefits
Fat pay package, heavy annual perks and bigger brand names are not the only determining factors anymore. In fact, employees experience more job satisfaction in smaller firms as they feel valued and appreciated for their individual contribution to the growth and success of the company, highlights Sampatkumar B Aratti, vice president and chief human resources officer, Lapp India.
Advantages of working in small organisations such as flexibility, deeper engagement with the team and the leadership, engaging culture can be presented to the talent that the organisation wants to attract and hire, Aratti adds.
According to Satindra Sen, co-founder & director, Exper Executive Education, what employees truly value in small organisations is getting to lead and own objectives that not only galvanise the organisation forward but also gives them a deep sense of individual fulfillment.
Tell a story
According to Mitali Bose, director and practice leader – Building Effective organizations, Hay Group India, “To attract big talent for small organisations – business heads must create a ‘compelling value proposition’. And the starting point for this is clarity of vision in the mind of the business owner.”
Bose gives the example of her previous employer, “I once worked with a small organisation where the business head was able to put together a bright, talent pool of individuals – because he was so clear in communicating his vision for the business and the role that each one was expected to contribute to the journey. In essence, the head of the organisation needs to ‘build a compelling case for specific job opportunities’ – in order to attract talent that is more concerned with making an impact rather than the monetary or brand value of the job.”
This employee proposition has to be backed by ‘follow through’ – the business head must follow up on the promise made to the employee, to ensure that the talent continues to subscribe to the vision.

‘There is a dearth of seasoned professionals for global positions’

Interview of the Day: ‘There is a dearth of seasoned professionals for global positions’

Interview of the Day: ‘There is a dearth of seasoned professionals for global positions’
Suraj Narain, Head – Talent Acquisition, eClerx Services Limited talks about the challenge of hiring for global positions

According to our data, nearly 80% organisations find it difficult to hire talent for global positions. Why?
Yes, hiring for positions which have a global role is extremely difficult. In the current context when there is a slowdown in the US and European markets, the impact is being felt across. Global roles demand a very different set of skills which requires one to deal with economics, cultural diversities and dynamics in business. Hence there is dearth for seasoned professionals who come with all round exposure and experience in dealing with complexity required for global positions.
What are some of the key challenges faced while hiring talent for global positions?
  • Not enough agencies who specialise in this area
  • Laws around no-poach and non-solicitation makes a lot of desired professionals out of reach for various companies.
  • Global professionals are frequently travelling and hence it is not easy to get time-slots from them.
What are the ways and means to tackle these challenges?
The approach has to be multi-fold. There has to be focus on breeding these professionals in-house. Nurturing talent and creating schools of knowledge can lead to developing the existing employees to take on global roles.
Campus hiring is a big opportunity to mitigate the talent gap. There are several reputed Indian and global institutes who have their campuses world-wide and encourage exchange programs. There are offerings around mid to senior level management courses which can be tapped into.
Which are the skills that make a candidate suited for an international position?
  • Most important is to have an eye on world markets, look at how an industry vertical is throwing up opportunities and creating growth. Finding a niche in such an environment is important as ‘general skills’ rarely qualify for such roles. Some of the emerging sectors are around predictive modeling, robotics, mobility, pharma, provider side of healthcare business, e-commerce and retail.
  • An MBA degree is always desirable and one can even try for some short stints in the form of projects or exchange program abroad.
  • Learning or knowledge of foreign language is an added advantage.
What recruitment practices do you generally use to hire globally competent resources?
  • Social media based hiring. Platforms such as Linkedin, twitter and Facebook are very useful.  We also partner with boutique search firms to reach out to talent across various pockets.
  • We focus on psychometric profiling and assess the learning aptitude of all applicants. We also generate a lot of leads through references from out database.

Sometimes it is these innocuous morsels of food that make a big difference when it comes to proper weight management. So what are these foods in your daily diet that you should avoid?

1. Glass of milk - While milk is a healthy addition to your meals, it could possibly be the one food that is hindering your progress. If you are used to having a glass of milk before you sleep, at breakfast, or even for a snack in the evening, take a break from drinking milk for a month. If you feel that its making a difference - making you less sluggish, helping you lose weight, clearing up your skin etc - this maybe the solution to your problems. Give it a go.

2. Something sweet after meals - Many people have this habit of wanting just a little something sweet after every meal. This is absolutely unnecessary and you probably know it. Just that addition of sugar after your meals is worth cutting down on if you have it on a daily basis. Let dessert be a treat you save for the weekends and you will probably savour it more.

3. Heavy carbs for your evening snack - How often have you felt so hungry in the time between your lunch and dinner, that you can eat anything without giving a thought as to whether it is right for you or not? You may land up knocking off a sandwich or a samosa. This may be the only unhealthy addition to your diet in the entire day, but consumed daily, this evening snack could be hindering your efforts. Therefore, carry something that has healthy proteins and fats like nuts, with you so that you don't succumb to hunger.

4. Potatoes - Recently dubbed by a study conducted by Harvard, as one of the foods that definitely makes you gain weight over time, potatoes have a way of turning up in our daily food unannounced. You maybe eating a healthy sabzi but a whole potato may have been added in there to improve the flavour. Fresh veggies taste good on their own if you try, so give it a shot.

5. So called 'healthy snacks' - Baked chakris and chips, all of these so called healthy snacks, should be substituted with real nutritious food. Many people eat these unaccounted, thinking they are healthy and will not make a big difference to their health and weight. This is a misconception and you are better off without these highly processed snacks.
