iPhone 'hacking': Apple denies working with NSA
Apple has never worked with the US National Security Agency and is unaware of efforts to target its smartphones.

SAN FRANCISCO: Apple has never worked with the US National Security Agency and is unaware of efforts to target its smartphones, the company said in response to reports that the spy agency had developed a system to hack into and monitor iPhones.

Germany's Der Spiegel reported this week that a secretive unit of the NSA, which is under fire for the extent and depth of its spying programs around the world, makes specialized gear and software to infiltrate and monitor a plethora of computing devices, including mobile phones.

The report included an NSA graphic dated 2008 that outlined a system in development called DROPOUTJEEP, described as a "software implant" that allows infiltrators to push and pull and retrieve data from iPhones such as contact lists. Der Spiegel referred to it as a "trojan," or malware that helps hackers get into protected systems.

The report, which surfaced on Sunday, did not suggest that Apple had cooperated with the U.S. spying agency on so-called backdoors.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the NSA did not comment on any specific allegations but said that its interest "in any given technology is driven by the use of that technology by foreign intelligence targets."

"The United States pursues its intelligence mission with care to ensure that innocent users of those same technologies are not affected," the agency added.

The iPhone was a relatively innovative gadget in 2008. It hit the market in 2007 and proceeded to help revolutionize the mobile phone industry.

"Apple has never worked with the NSA to create a backdoor in any of our products, including iPhone. Additionally, we have been unaware of this alleged NSA program targeting our products," the company said in a statement.

"We will continue to use our resources to stay ahead of malicious hackers and defend our customers from security attacks, regardless of who's behind them.

World's first 'transparent', dual-screen tablet launched
Grippity has reportedly unveiled what is touted to be the first-ever transparent dual-side operable tablet.
WASHINGTON: Grippity has reportedly unveiled what is touted to be the first-ever transparent dual-side operable tablet.

The tablet features a semi-transparent 7-inch 800 x 480 display and is expected to hit the shelves by next fall.

According to Discovery News, the tablet's both front and rear panels support capacitive multi-touch input and run on a Cortex A8 processorand Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with 4GB storage that can be extended to 32 GB.

The Grippity tablet supports both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and also comes with IR blaster that allows it to function as a remote control.

Grippity creator Jacob Eichbaum claimed that the tablet's partially translucent display makes it easier for users to type via a touchscreen keyboard and since both panels support touch, all 10 fingers can be used to type rather than just two.

Recently, Samsung also patented a technology for a transparent touchscreen that would allow users to control the device from both the sides.

The report said that the price of the Grippity tablet isn't clear yet but users can pay 235 dollars to reserve a slate for delivery by October 24 and early birds can pre-order the tablet for 159 dollars.

Brilliant ways to get a flatter belly

Brilliant ways to get a flatter belly

Brilliant ways to get a flatter belly
Get a flatter belly

Worried why all your ab exercises aren't showing the results you want? Maybe you are missing something. These simple tips will make your workout work better for you...

Begin with small moves
Begin easy — you cannot go on a cyclothon before you know how to cycle and similarly you cannot do 50 crunches the first time you learn how to do it. Work a small range — hold a plank for 20 seconds or do only 10 crunches in the beginning.

Warm enough?
Some people do not realise the importance of a proper warm up before a workout session, and believe that it is a waste of time. But, warming up your muscles prevents injury. A little walking, marching on the spot, rotating your mid-section gently, bending forwards to touch your toe, etc can warm up your core for an ab workout.

Breathe
Oxygen is important for your core muscles, if you want them to work their full capacity. So, don't hold your breath. Inhale when you are doing the easy part of the move, and exhale when you have to exert force.

For example — exhale when you are on the way up while doing crunches.

Don't get distracted
If you thought only your muscles play an important role when it comes to doing those push ups, you were wrong — our mind too plays an important part in workout schedules. So, avoid watching TV while exercising, instead concentrate on the muscles, and feel them move, stretch and contract. It will improve your results.

Be an all rounder
When you want a flat belly fast, the trick is to do movements in all dimensions. Don't just concentrate on crunches — include other exercises and asanas like Vakrasana that help you twist and turn your body.

Balance
For strong abs you should try to incorporate some balance into your routine. Even something as simple as — standing on one leg while the other feet rests on your thigh, arms raised above your head and palms touching — the Vriksasana or the Tree pose.

Rest it out
Your workout will only work for you if you give yourself adequate rest. Overworking your abs won't help. The rest will help the muscles recover and will make them stronger.

Slow and steady
Speeding up your workout will not help. Slow down and you will burn fat better.

Try yoga
Sick of gymming? Try yoga. Most yoga poses are excellent for strengthening the core. Yoga not only exercises your mind along with your body, but it makes you flexible and reduces your stress-levels.

Weight matters
Your abdominal muscles could do better if they are challenged with some weights. With a kilo or so thrown in, your regular workout can give you even better results.

Pay attention to what you eat
If you want washboard abs, you need to eat right — just going through gruelling gym routines day after day, will not work. A city-based nutritionist says, "Make sure your diet consists of plenty of protein, low fat milk and milk products, fruits and fresh vegetables

Snapchat database hacked, 4.6m user IDs & phone nos. leaked

Snapchat database hacked, 4.6m user IDs & phone nos. leaked

Snapchat database hacked, 4.6m user IDs & phone nos. leaked
Hackers have posted the database of these users on a website called SnapchatDB as SQL dump or as CSV text format.

Phone numbers and usernames of over 4.6 million users of the popular picture sharing service Snapchat have been leaked online. Hackers have posted the database of these users on a website called SnapchatDB as SQL dump or as CSV text format.

SnapChatDB claims that the data was acquired through the security exploits documented recently. It said, "Given that it's been around four months since our last Snapchat release, we figured we'd do a refresher on the latest version, and see which of the released exploits had been fixed (full disclosure: none of them). Seeing that nothing had been really been improved upon (although, stories are using AES/CBC rather than AES/ECB, which is a start), we decided that it was in everyone's best interests for us to post a full disclosure of everything we've found in our past months of hacking the gibson."

Australia-based Gibson Security recently published a security vulnerability in SnapChat that exposed users' phone numbers based on their usernames. Snapchat downplayed the security issue with its service. The auto-destruct photo sharing service claimed that it had recently added additional counter-measures and continues to combat spam and abuse. It had said that the potential hack sounds 'impractical'.

In a blogpost, Snapchat said, "Theoretically, if someone were able to upload a huge set of phone numbers, like every number in an area code, or every possible number in the U.S., they could create a database of the results and match usernames to phone numbers that way. Over the past year we've implemented various safeguards to make it more difficult to do. We recently added additional counter-measures and continue to make improvements to combat spam and abuse." However, SnapchatDB.com's message indicates that the service did patch the exploit.

On their part, the anonymous group of hackers has claimed that they have stolen the database to raise awareness about holes in Snapchat's security. To ensure that the information is not misused by cyber criminals, the hackers have redacted the last two digits of the leaked phone numbers to safeguard users' privacy.

The hackers, however, said they are willing to share the uncensored database on request, 'under certain circumstances.'

The data was not available for download, at the time of writing this story

Samsung Galaxy S5 to have premium version: Report

Samsung Galaxy S5 to have premium version: Report

Samsung Galaxy S5 to have premium version: Report
The device dubbed Galaxy F may make a debut around the same time as the company's upcoming smartphone flagship Galaxy S5.

Buzz about Samsung launching a new premium smartphone featuring a metal body is getting hotter. According to a report in Korean publication ETNews, the device dubbed Galaxy F may make a debut around the same time as the company's upcoming smartphone flagship Galaxy S5.

As per the report, the prototype of the metallic smartphone was developed in Europe and later moved to the company's production facility in Vietnam. An earlier report had said that Samsung is preparing a new Galaxy F line of devices, which will be placed above the S and Note series. However, it was also being speculated that the Galaxy S5 could also sport a metal frame.

Previously, alleged images of a metal frame of a Samsung smartphone too had leaked online. It was reported that the metal frame was provided by a Samsung sub-contractor, which has been asked to manufacture it without specifying the model.

The frame was 143.83mm in length and 72.27mm in width, compared to the 136.6mm long and 69.8mm wide Galaxy S4. These dimensions suggested a larger screen than 5-inch. It is also rumoured that the Galaxy S5 will have 2K display resolution and 560ppi pixel density, the highest for any smartphone.

A Samsung device with model number SM-G900F device, believed to be a higher-end variant of S5, had also appeared on AnTuTu benchmarks. The device that showed up on the benchmark results is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chip and 3GB of RAM. The Krait processor part of the chip had been clocked at 2.5GHz. The phone was detected as having 1080p display, though it's possible that Samsung locked the resolution to that particular resolution (Galaxy S5 is said to sport a 2K display). The device was running Android 4.4 KitKat and featured a 16MP camera. It is likely that this device was Galaxy F.

Lenovo Vibe X review: More beauty than brawn

Lenovo Vibe X review: More beauty than brawn

Lenovo Vibe X review: More beauty than brawn
NEW DELHI: For Lenovo, 2013 has been a big year in the Indian smartphone market. The company is known for its desktops and laptops but with the sale of traditional computers slowing down, Lenovo is turning its focus to the smartphone industry. In China, its home country, it is already one of the biggest phone makers.

In India, 2013 was a sort of beginning for Lenovo and with the phones like P780 and K900, it managed to make a mark for itself. It promised good features, decent quality and fast performance at a relatively affordable price, and with some of the handsets delivered on these promises.

For the company, 2014 is all about working on the inroads made in 2013. And in this endeavor, Lenovo is counting heavily on Vibe X, its new flagship phone.

On paper, the price of Vibe X sure looks good. With an MRP of Rs 25,999 it is one of the more affordable phones with a FullHD screen, promise of good aftersales service and a quad-core processor. But this is also a segment of the market where competition is very strong.

Does Vibe X manage to compete with the likes of Google Nexus 5, which sells for just Rs 3,000 more, and Sony Xperia ZR?

After spending some time with the handset, we can tell you the answer is a no. Lenovo seems to have missed a trick or two with Vibe X. And that is disappointing because this phone does have a few things going for it. Read on to know why we reached this conclusion...

Sleek, lightweight and with a terrific screen
Vibe X is a good-looking device. In fact, it is more than good looking. It is incredibly thin and very light, especially for a phone that has a five-inch screen.

At 6.9mm, Vibe X is as thin as Lenovo K900 but feels thinner because unlike the boxy shape of K900, this phone has gently curved sides and rounded edges. This gives it a pebble like shape and makes it easier to hold it in hand. The back cover, which is non-removable, is made of plastic but has faux metal finish and a pattern of very fine dots.

The frame around the screen is also made of tough plastic but has faux chrome finish. It is shiny and adds to the style of the device, though we are not sure how well the shine will hold up with the use. The volume rocker on the right and the power button on the left have chamfered edges. These buttons fit in their sockets snuggly and feel perfect.

The speaker grill on Vibe X is on the top of the screen. Below the screen there are three touch-sensitive and backlit buttons. The screen is topped with a layer of Gorilla Glass 3, which is very tough and adds to the premium feel of the device.

Overall, we like the design and build quality of Vibe X. The design is especially nice. But we can't help feeling a bit disappointing that the phone lacks a metal body. K900, the flagship Lenovo phone of 2013, was sturdier and tougher because of its steel body.

Before we detail the hardware in Vibe X, let's talk about two components - screen and speakers.

The 5-inch screen in Vibe X is incredible! It has FullHD resolution. Text and images look clear and sharp on it. For an IPS screen, it also dazzles by the way it shows colours. They look punchy and pleasantly saturated. The brightness and contrast in Vibe X could have been better, though. In our use, we found screen to be bright enough in most conditions. But in direct sunlight we wished it was a bit less reflective.

Speaker is the other highlight of Vibe X. It is very loud. If you play songs on Vibe X, it can easily fill a small silent room with sound.

On paper, Vibe X seems to have decent hardware. But relying on specifications to judge a phone can be misleading.
Let down by performance issues
Given its ambitions, Vibe X is a shockingly slow phone. It is not as slow as a Rs 10,000 or a Rs 15,000Android phones. But compared to the performance on phones like Nexus 5, Xperia ZR or even last year's phones like Galaxy S3 and Nexus 4, which now sell for less than Rs 25,000, the Vibe X is slow.
In fact, it feels slower than Lenovo K900!

The lag on the phone was visible when we swiped between the home screens, opened apps, browsed the web and opened gallery app to view photos. It lagged while we played games like Asphalt 8. This is a very demanding game but a phone that costs Rs 25,000 should be able to run it well, with smooth frame rates. We didn't see the smooth performance on Vibe X.

One reason why Vibe X feels slower is probably due to the software it runs. On top of Android 4.2.2, Lenovo has put a modified user interface. This interface, which is partly inspired by the user interface of iOS operating system, is a sort of oddity. It introduces a number of changes in the Android interface just for the sake of change. For example, there is no app drawer. The method to multitask has been changed. On Vibe X, the multitasking tray doesn't show the thumbnail of running apps. Instead, it is more like the multitasking in iOS 6. Long pressing on the menu button shows the icons of all the active apps at the bottom of the screen.

Similarly, the settings panel has been changed. The quick access panel on the notification shade has been changed. The icons are different - they are more colourful and cartoonish. In our opinion, none of these changes are helpful to a consumer.

It is also clear this unique interface makes the phone slow. We replaced the default launcher with third-party launcher - Nova - and that improved the performance slightly. But we could not get rid of a security app that runs all the time on the phone, whether you need it or not. Also we could not reverse some of the deeper changes, such as the new way to multitask, that Lenovo has made.

In fact, Lenovo K900, which has a different - and more Android like - user interface, did not suffer from the performance issues. It provided a mostly lag-free user interface.

Vibe X packs in a 13MP camera. But the performance of the camera is average. In most of the conditions, Vibe X shoots images that lack adequate contrast. In low-light, the phone attempts over smoothening to keep the level of colour noise down. It succeeds but that also results in low amount of details. The phone can shoot FullHD videos. For shooting videos, performance is slightly better. If you hold the phone steady, it is possible to shoot decent quality footage with Vibe X. But if you are shooting from a moving car, the videos have some focus issues. The front camera in Vibe X captures clear footage during video chats.

The voice quality and cell reception during calls was very good on Vibe X.

The battery in the phone lasts around 11 hours when used with a 3G connection. This is slightly below average.
Should you buy it or not?
As we said earlier, our recommendation is a no. The competition around Rs 25,000 mark is strong in the phone market. At this price point, not only a phone has to offer a good screen and usable camera but also fantastic performance. Performance is particular crucial. If you can't play the latest game with a Rs 25,000 phone or if it lags while you are sorting your holiday photos, what is the point of spending so much money?

There are handsets that offer better experience with the same price. Nexus 5 is one choice if you are willing to spend around Rs 3,000 more. Xperia ZR is another decent option and it costs less than Vibe X. Slightly older devices like Galaxy S3, Lenovo K900, Nexus 4 and Galaxy Note II are also better devices than Vibe X.

Vibe X has a great screen and a good design but the performance is a real downer. May be Lenovo will fix it with a software update in future. May be the device will get a price cut that will make it more appealing. But currently, Vibe X is not a phone that we can recommend.
