6 handy tips to ace an interview: Must-dos

6 handy tips to ace an interview: Must-dos

Description: 6 handy tips to ace an interview: Must-dos
Saurabh N. Saklani, Co-founder, Exper Executive Education shares 6 must-dos during an interview
i) Understanding the interview objective: Let us first start with what a candidate’s goal and focus must be during an interview. The candidate must understand that the main objective is to help zero down the large pool of candidates to the genuine “potential hires.” Thus, the primary focus/goal of a candidate during an interview is to make it to the short-list.
ii) Read up company’s history: Candidates must be prepared to respond to questions that help the interviewer assess whether the candidate will be a good fit in the company’s culture and value systems etc. Thus, the candidate must read about the company’s history, vision, values, role models and stalwarts over the years to showcase a deep understanding of the organisation.
iii) Know to demonstrate skills: Candidates must be equipped to respond to questions that help the interviewer assess whether the candidate exhibits the skills, attitudes, and behaviors needed in the company’s current growth context.
iv) Networking: Candidates must make an effort to find and speak to people that work in the organisation as that would give a true ‘feel’ for the actual expectations at work. Social media has made this very easy and speaking to someone that works for the company is a great way to build a ‘sense’ of the actual work environment.
v) Align with company’s culture: The candidate must exhibit alignment with the organisation’s needs and expectations from the role. This must come from one’s life/work stories that highlight the ‘behavioral fit-elements’ like passion, commitment, achievement orientation, loyalty etc.
vi) Asking questions: Candidate must not shy away from asking questions about the organisation because s/he must also determine whether the company’s culture and work environment is a good fit for them! The fitment process must go both ways to avoid future anxiety, disappointments, frustrations, and stress.

Microsoft to unveil new Surface tablet

Microsoft to unveil new Surface tablet

Microsoft to unveil new Surface tablet
Details of the new device were not known, but many analysts expect a more powerful Surface tablet to help Microsoft build momentum in mobile computing.

A year after its flubbed tablet introduction, Microsoft is back with a new Surface.

The US tech giant, which has invited media to a launch in New York, is seeking to correct missteps from its first try and gain a foothold in the tablet market dominated by Apple's iPad and others using the Google Android operating system.

Details of the new device were not known, but many analysts expect a more powerful Surface tablet to help Microsoft build momentum in mobile computing.

Microsoft, which is trying to shift its focus to "devices and services" to better compete with Apple and Google, barely made a dent in the sizzling tablet market since introducing the first-generation Surface in October.

The company has not released sales figures, but reported tablet revenues of just $853 million in the fiscal year ended in June. Research firm IDC said Microsoft sold 900,000 in the first quarter of the year -- a market share of just 1.8% -- and even fewer in the second quarter. Apple by comparison sold some 34 million iPads in the first half of 2013.

Microsoft was forced to take an embarrassing $900 million writedown for "inventory adjustments" due to weak sales of the new tablet, which has a basic version and a more expensive "Pro" model.

Rob Enderle, analyst and consultant with Enderle Group, said he expects the new tablets to be much improved.

"This new release should be massively better than the first one. The trick will be getting folks to look at the product fresh," he told AFP.

Enderle said the first version "was too heavy, too expensive and had poor battery life," and the upgraded Surface Pro lacked a key element, the Outlook email program.

Microsoft appears to have fixed these issues and now has a chance to gain some traction with a device that aims to serve as a tablet with some of the functionality of a laptop PC.

"Right now, people don't want to carry a large tablet and laptop," said Enderle.

"If you can consolidate into one product, it lightens your load and it's a lot cheaper."

Jack Gold, analyst at J Gold Associates, said the first Surface "was not a complete device" and did not work with many Windows apps.

Gold said Microsoft can succeed with "a reasonably priced and performance-oriented Pro" to appeal to business users, but that the company "has to build momentum before Android makes it mostly irrelevant."

Others argue that Microsoft's strategy has become muddled as it tries to gain ground in the "high mobility" computing segment while still serving the hundreds of millions using conventional PCs on the Windows operating system.

Roger Kay at Endpoint Technologies Associates said Microsoft has been struggling to serve these sometimes conflicting goals.

"The ambiguity of Windows 8 is built into its architecture," Kay said. "Microsoft has been doing nothing but looking over its shoulder. You need to have your own vision of what people need."

Kay said Microsoft still has a long road to become a meaningful player in mobile computing.

"High mobility and that form factor are up for grabs between Apple and Google and perhaps Microsoft, but Microsoft will be a distant third," he added.

Kay said Microsoft's best chance in the segment was to build momentum with its acquisition of Nokia's phone business, and extend that into tablets.

Kash Rangan, analyst at Bank of America/Merrill Lynch, said Microsoft is hurt by a "diffused focus" as it tries to reorganize, search for a new chief executive and reboot its mobile strategy with its Nokia acquisition.

"We worry about the tsunami of changes the company is currently undergoing," Rangan said in a note to clients with a "neutral" investment rating.

"The reorganization, CEO change, acquisition of Nokia, and financial reporting structure change are all occurring simultaneously, and only serve to increase the complexity of the investment story."

Neha Singh Verma, TimesJobs.com Bureau
My First Job: I started out as a teacher at the age of 22 in the US. However, my entry into the corporate world was when I was 27, when I started working for GE Capital in India. My role involved identifying opportunities for private equity and joint ventures for the company in the Indian IT and BPO space.
My experience: I worked first with the Business Development team in GE Capital. It was a team of energetic and smart people, who were highly knowledgeable and motivated. They helped me get a better understanding of the profession. This was my first exposure to the interesting world of insurance and provided learning opportunities across multiple functions especially in the area of risk analytics.
Things I learnt:
  • One of the major lessons I learnt is the importance of clear, open and continuous communication between the stakeholders. Whether the news is good or bad, it is essential to keep all the stakeholders in the loop. This helps the company in growing together as a strong team. This is one thing I strongly practice in Bharti AXA General Insurance too.
  • Another aspect I learnt from GE is to have confidence in people and taking calculated risks.
  • Focus on the bigger picture: Try to look at things from a holistic perspective and come out with solutions that will bring about the best result for the organisation as a whole, rather than concentrating on small hurdles.
  • Teamwork is a very important factor in any organization. To work together in a team towards a single objective is very important.
Skills I acquired: Two of the main tenets I approach work with are communication and openness. I maintain an open-door policy and encourage my colleagues to walk in and talk to me at any point in time. We also have a structured system called ‘Meet the Top’ that enables me to meet employees from across functions and hierarchies in small informal gatherings. On the business side, a risk taking, entrepreneurial attitude are imperative for individual and organizational growth, and these are the qualities I encourage and try to develop in my team.
My manager’s teaching: My first manager taught the importance of an entrepreneurial attitude and the courage to take risks. His encouragement trained me to always think big and also plan big and to never inhibit my creativity. I learnt to give 100% of myself to everything I did and this came from his passion for his work. I follow his example of having a positive problem solving approach instead of complaining about things.
My biggest achievement: I think moving from a purely academic background to settling in in a business role in the corporate sector to me is a big achievement.
My journey so far: I have always tried to look for learning opportunities and taken roles where I have had no previous experience and may not be best equipped to do the job. The reason for doing this is that if one is able to do even an average job on something which is an area of improvement it gives a huge sense of confidence that one can achieve a lot more in life.
My most crucial step/assignment: My decision to take up a role in GE’s back office call center including night shifts was probably the first time I moved from being an individual contributor to a team leader. This is where I got a chance to manage a team and really see operations at the ground level, as well as to understand what makes both the people and the processes tick at the ground level.
My Advice: The first thing is to set the right goals, and to do this one needs to understand his/her capabilities. Being able to deliver on weak areas gives one a lot of confidence which is a critical success factor for growth.

LG is all set to launch its G2 smartphone in India on September 30, with price likely falling between Rs 40,000 and Rs 45,000.

NEW DELHI: South Korean manufacturer LG is all set to launch its G2 smartphone in India on September 30. The device was globally unveiled last month.

LG has already sent out press invites for the September 30 launch event. The company has also posted several Facebook posts stating that G2 will arrive in India soon.

LG is expected to price G2 between Rs 40,000-45,000 in the market. Most top smartphones launched in the country also fall in this price bracket, but some can be purchased for approximately Rs 35,000.

This smartphone competes with handsets like HTC One, Apple iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia Z, Nokia Lumia 925 and BlackBerry Z10. This week, the country saw the launch of two other top-end smartphones - Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Sony Xperia Z1.

The LG G2 has a 5.2-inch full HD screen that is slightly bigger than the 5-inch display that rivals like Galaxy S4 and Xperia Z have. This smartphone runs on the 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 chipset and comes pre-loaded with Android 4.2. LG G2 has a 13MP rear camera, 3,000mAh battery and 2GB RAM. For connectivity, it comes with 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, infrared and microUSB 2.0.

Its most unique feature is its design, which departs from the usual layout of hardware keys seen in all smartphones. Instead of Power/Lock and volume keys on the sides or top, this phone has them on the back panel, just below the camera. It also has dedicated graphics memory, which is likely to help improve battery life.

5-inch smartphones most popular in Indian market

5-inch smartphones most popular in Indian market

5-inch smartphones most popular in Indian market
The Indian consumer is opting most for smartphones with a screen size of around 5-inch.

NEW DELHI: Size matters, and for Indians, the most preferred is 5 inches — for smartphone screen size, that is.

In a fast-growing smartphone market — current size is 25 million units and sales are growing 50% annually — that is spoilt for choice thanks to a wide range of products from global and local manufacturers, a strong consumer preference is emerging: The Indian consumer is opting most for smartphones with a screen size of around 5-inch; in trade, screen size of phones are measured diagonally.

Market trackers are convinced that 5-inch size is the winner.

"The buying trend is moving towards the 5-inch screen as it's ideal for web surfing," says Manasi Yadav, senior market analyst with IDC India.

For the second quarter ended June 2013, sales of smartphones with screen sizes from 5-inch to 6.9-inch rose 17 times from a year earlier, according to research firm IDC. Within this, the briskest sale has been recorded in the 4.7-5-inch screen size category. A senior executive of a global handset maker confirmed the trend, saying "5-inch smartphones contributed only about 3% of sales in 2012, but currently make up close to 20% of the sales."

The manager did not wish to be identified because company policy does not allow executives to comment on overall market data.

5-inch screen size emerges winning category in India's crowded smartphone market And the most iconic smartphone-maker, Apple, is also reportedly getting converted to the 5-inch theory. Tech watchers in America have been writing about Apple's plans to offer iPhones with screen size from 4.8-inch to 6-inch. Currently, the biggest iPhone screen size is 4-inch.

Samsung's Galaxy S4 offers a 5-inch screen, and HTC, another high-end smartphone-maker, offers 4.7-inch models.

But it's not in the premium phone category that the 5-inch preference is showing up in India.

Market analysts, manufacturers and retailers say the preference for the 5-inch screen is attributable to this size offering the optimum combination of price, performance and what is called 'pocketability' (the ease with which a smartphone can be carried in a shirt or trouser pocket).

Smartphones screen sizes vary from 3-inch to 7-inch. Smaller screens mean lower prices and higher pocketability. But the performance, in terms of quality of images and the space provided for apps, is worse.

As more and more Indians opt for smartphones, performance quality is becoming important but price sensitivity and pocketability remain factors — hence the emergence of the 5-inch screen size as the winning combination.

"Ability to fit in pockets is crucial. There's a close call between 4.7-inch and 5-inch screens. Beyond this, it's too big for the pockets," says Shashin Devsare, executive director at Karbonn Mobiles. "Of course, performance and price also go into the buying decision," he added.

Local brands with 5-inch screen size retail around Rs 10,000, and premium models of Samsung and Apple are upwards of Rs 18,000. Dealers say the Rs 10,000-20,000 price band is what most Indians find comfortable while buying a 5-inch phone.

Mahmood, a handset retailer in Indirapuram on the outskirts of Delhi, says that customers are increasingly seeking phones around the 5-inch screen size. "Though they cost a bit more, but they are still affordable and sell the most."

Kaushik Ghosh, 35, a Delhi-based independent technology consultant, recently bought a smartphone, and was very particular about the screen size.

"It's not just a mobile phone that I bought. The 5-inch screen size allows me to easily use it and carry. I can also use the media apps well, without straining my eyes," he added.

Says Hari Om Rai, co-founder Lava, a domestic handset maker, "Buyers see more value in a 5-inch smartphone rather than a smaller or a bigger screen."

The larger real estate of 5-inch screens allows makers to innovate. Katyayan Gupta, analyst (mobility), Asia-Pacific, Forrester Research, said, "Manufacturers can give a stylus option in large screens."

And, finally, the 5-inch trend in smartphones is creating a new fashion trend — trousers with pockets made for phones this size. The head of global design for Dockers (a Levi Strauss brand), Doug Conklyn, told FoxNews.com recently: "We recently increased the size of our 'coin pocket', which is the pocket-within-the-pocket on the wearer's right, from 3x3 to 4x4 to accommodate today's larger phones."

It seems, not just Indians, but everyone loves the 5-inch size — for smartphone screen size, that is.

Time to step away from phone!

Time to step away from phone!

Time to step away from phone!
As smartphones continue to burrow their way into our lives, and wearable devices like Google Glass threaten to erode our personal space.
Whenever Michael Carl, the fashion market director at Vanity Fair, goes out to dinner with friends, he plays something called the "phone stack" game: Everyone places their phones in the middle of the table; whoever looks at their device before the check arrives picks up the tab.

Brandon Holley, the former editor of Lucky magazine, had trouble ditching her iPhone when she got home from work. So about six months ago, she began tossing her phone into a vintage milk tin the moment she walked in. It remains there until after dinner.

And Marc Jacobs, the fashion designer, didn't want to sleep next to a beeping gizmo. So he banned digital devices from his bedroom, a house rule he shared with audiences during a recent screening of "Disconnect," a film that dramatizes how technology has alienated people from one another.

As smartphones continue to burrow their way into our lives, and wearable devices like Google Glass threaten to erode our personal space even further, overtaxed users are carving out their own device-free zones with ad hoc tricks and life hacks.

Whether it's a physical barrier (no iPads at the dinner table) or a conceptual one (turn off devices by 11 pm), users say these weaning techniques are improving their relationships - and their sanity.

"Disconnecting is a luxury that we all need," said Lesley MM Blume, a New York writer who keeps her phone away from the dinner table at home. "The expectation that we must always be available to employers, colleagues, family: It creates a real obstacle in trying to set aside private time. But that private time is more important than ever."

Much of the digital detoxing is centered on the home, where urgent emails from co-workers, texts from friends, Instagram photos from acquaintances and YOLO updates on Facebook conspire to upend domestic tranquillity.

A popular tactic is to designate a kind of cellphone lockbox, like the milk tin that Holley uses.

"If my phone is buzzing or lighting up, it's still a distraction, so it goes in the box," said Holley, who lives in a row house in Brooklyn, with her son, Smith, and husband, John. "It's not something I want my kid to see."

An empty fishbowl, which sits on a dining room credenza, serves a similar function for Jaime David, a publicist at the Starworks Group in New York, except there are consequences for violators. "If someone picks up the phone between 6:30 and 8:30 pm without a really good reason, they are tasked with getting our son to bed," said David, who lives in Maplewood, NJ, with her husband, Jon, and two sons, Milo, 4, and Jack, 10 months.

Others assign a digital curfew.

"No screens after 11 pm," said Ari Melber, a host of MSNBC's "The Cycle," who lives in a walk-up apartment in Brooklyn, with his fiancee, Drew Grant, a pop culture reporter at The New York Observer. The rule was instituted in January, after a vacation in Honduras where the couple found themselves without internet access and ultimately happy about it.

"We found the evenings were more relaxing, and we were sleeping better," Melber said.

Sleep is a big factor, which is why some, like Jacobs, draw the gadget-free line at the bedroom.

"I don't want to sleep next to something that is a charged ball of information with photos and emails," said Peter Som, the fashion designer, who keeps his phone in the living room, plugged in overnight. "It definitely is a head-clearer and delineates daytime and sleep time."

Households with young children are especially mindful about being overconnected, with parents sensitive to how children may imitate bad habits.

Rebecca Minkoff, a fashion designer, makes a point of turning off the ringers and leaving her two phones on the opposite end of her Dumbo apartment when she plays with her 2-year-old son, Luca.

"It isn't easy, but I do my best to make the few hours I have with my son cellphone-free until he goes to sleep," Minkoff said.

Other parents regard dinnertime as sacrosanct.

"It's a nice break for me when all of us can unplug," said Josh Pickard, an owner of the restaurants Locanda Verde, Lafayette and the Dutch, who forbids his two teenage children, Lotte, 17, and Jack, 13, from bringing their multiple devices to the dinner table. "I can just be in one place in one moment."But it's not just inside the home where users are weaning themselves from the habit. Cellphone overusers are making efforts to disconnect in social settings, whether at the behest of the host or in the form of friendly competition.

To keep guests from texting under the table, some party hosts are banning devices outright.

Peter Davis, the editor of Scene magazine, recently attended a dinner party for about 12 at a West Village home where the host offered to check guests' phones and put them in a bowl. Although most balked, Davis said that guests did manage to stay off their phones during the dinner.

"It was a hint not be on your phone," he said. "Unless you work in the ER or you're a doctor on call, no one really needs to be on their phone."

But maybe the best way to curb cellphone overuse is by preying on people's social insecurities. In some circles, being inaccessible is a status symbol.

"Public cellphone use has reached an uncivilized fever pitch, so now it's chicer behavior to exempt yourself from that," said Blume, the New York writer. "You're not answerable 24/7, and that's a powerful and luxurious statement."

German group claims hacking iPhone 5S Touch ID

German group claims hacking iPhone 5S Touch ID

German group claims hacking iPhone 5S Touch ID
A group of German hackers claimed to have cracked the iPhone fingerprint scanner.

BOSTON: A group of German hackers claimed to have cracked the iPhone fingerprint scanner, just two days after Apple launched the technology that it promises will better protect devices from criminals and snoopers seeking access.

If the claim is verified, it will be embarrassing for Apple which is betting on the scanner to set its smartphone apart from new models of Samsung Electronics and others running the Android operating system of Google Inc.

Two prominent iPhone security experts told Reuters that they believed the German group, known as the Chaos Computing Club, or CCC, had succeeded in defeating Apple's Touch ID, though they had not personally replicated the work.

One of them, Charlie Miller, co-author of the iOS Hacker's Handbook, described the work as "a complete break" of Touch ID security. "It certainly opens up a new possibility for attackers."

Apple representatives did not respond to requests for comment.

CCC, one the world's largest and most respected hacking groups, posted a video on its website that appeared to show somebody accessing an iPhone 5S with a fabricated print. The site described how members of its biometrics team had cracked the new fingerprint reader, one of the few major high-tech features added to the latest version of the iPhone.

The group said they targeted Touch ID to knock down reports about its "marvels," which suggested it would be difficult to crack.

"Fingerprints should not be used to secure anything. You leave them everywhere, and it is far too easy to make fake fingers out of lifted prints," a hacker named Starbug was quoted as saying on the CCC's site.

The group said it defeated Touch ID by photographing the fingerprint of an iPhone's user, then printing it on to a transparent sheet, which it used to create a mold for a "fake finger."

CCC said similar processes have been used to crack "the vast majority" of fingerprint sensors on the market.

"I think it's legit," said Dino Dai Zovi," another co-author of the iOS Hacker's Handbook. "The CCC doesn't fool around or over-hype, especially when they are trying to make a political point."

Touch ID, which was only introduced on the top-of-the-line iPhone 5S, lets users unlock their devices or make purchases on iTunes by simply pressing their finger on the home button. It uses a sapphire crystal sensor embedded in the button.

Data used for verification is encrypted and stored in a secure enclave of the phone's A7 processor chip.

Two security experts who sponsored an impromptu competition offering cash and other prizes to the first hackers who cracked the iPhone said they had reviewed the information posted on the CCC website, but wanted more documentation.

"We are simply awaiting a full video documentation and walk through of the process that they have claimed," said mobile security researcher Nick DePetrillo, who started the contest with another security expert, Robert Graham. "When they deliver that video we will review it."

The two of them each put up $100 toward a prize for the contest winner, then set up a website inviting others to contribute. While the booty now includes more than $13,000 in cash, it was not clear that the CCC would receive the full payout, even if DePetrillo and Graham declared them winners.

A micro venture capital firm known as I/O Capital, which had offered to pay $10,000 of the prize money, issued a press release saying that it would make its own determination about who won the contest.

Last season's issues are behind us: Dravid
"It is all behind us now. "There were some issues, but most of it has been resolved," Rahul Dravid said.

JAIPUR: Rajasthan Royals do not have any hangover of last season. After Saturday's victory over Mumbai Indians in their Champions League T20 opener, skipper Rahul Dravid said that they had moved on following the spot-fixing saga.

"It is all behind us now," the skipper said. "There were some issues, but most of it has been resolved. When we came here (for the Champions League), we discussed it and acknowledged that it has actually happened. Then we decided to move on."

That the Royals are back in the groove was evident on the field on Saturday. They were the better team on display, in their seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians, who are definitely superior on paper.

The Mumbai side's coach John Wright too accepted that they had lost to a better side on the day. "They batted and fielded better," Wright said. "We always knew they would be tough team to beat here and they showed that."

The coach admitted that they were at least 20 runs short. "The bowling and fielding were at par. But then, another 20 runs would have suited us perfectly." The toss had become crucial after the evening drizzle and Mumbai Indians too would have preferred to field first at skipper Rohit Sharma called right.

Dravid said they would have preferred fielding anyway, but the rain helped them decide to go for an all-pace attack, with part-time spinner Ashok Menaria sending down useful two overs.

Mumbai Indians, in contrast, went in with two specialized spinner, a move that Wright conceded, might have backfired. Harbhajan Singh gave away 22 runs in his three overs, while Pragyan Ojha gave away 13 in one. Wright admitted that they have to win their three remaining matches now. "We will have to fix things up and get into the act," he said.

CSK vs TTN: Hussey, Raina ensure CSK's victory over Titans
Suresh Raina's blistering 28-ball 47 helped the Super Kings revive their run chase.

RANCHI: The new season for MS Dhoni started off on a winning note after the Chennai Super Kings hunted down a formidable target set by Titans in the game three of the CLT20 at the Jharkhand Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

Although Dhoni didn't score much but the four-wicket win gave enough reasons for the partisan crowd to cheer on their home town hero.

The spectators were in for some batting treat, first from AB de Villiers, who was in the rival camp. Riding on his 77 off 36 balls (3x4, 7x6), Titans piled up a handsome 185 for five. Who could think that innings would be reduced to a footnote by a sublime Michael Hussey (47 off 26; 7x4, 1x6) and a murderous Suresh Raina (47 off 28 balls; 5x4; 2x6)?

All that was left after their partnership was the finishing touch, which had to come from Dhoni, but it did not. The best finisher in world cricket began the job with a straight six off Morne Morkel but perished going for the jugular to be caught at cover by De Villiers.

Jadeja, who had an off day, could not finish the job either but Albie Morkel wrapped it up with seven balls to spare, driving Rowan Richards through the covers for four. CSK were also helped by the fact that the Titan gave away 24 runs in wides.

There were periods in the match when it seemed Dhoni's charm won't work on Sunday. Making a fresh start after a break, Dhoni sported a new haircut but till De Villiers's adventurous and innovative shot-making was on, nothing seemed going Chennai Super Kings' way. He got a life on 30, when Mohit Sharma could not hold on to a hard-hit lofted shot at deep cover but that was nothing more than a half-chance.

What preceded and followed was mayhem. De Villers scored 77 off 36 balls hammering three fours and seven sixes, while captain Henry Davids chipped in with 52.

Brief scores: Titans 185 for 5 in 20 overs (De Villiers 77, Davids 52, Bravo 2-34) lost to Chennai Super Kings 187 for 6 (Hussey 47, Raina 47, Bravo 38; Richards 3-29 ) by four wickets. MoM: Suresh Raina.
