Windows 8 core app updates due tomorrow

Microsoft is starting to roll out major updates to its Mail, Calendar, and People apps for Windows 8 and Windows RT. What other updates are coming and when?

 

Microsoft is set to make available to users substantial updates to at least some of its core Windows 8 and Windows RT applications this week.
Microsoft executives announced today that starting tomorrow, they'll make available via the Windows Store significant updates to the Mail, People, and Calendar apps that are built into Windows 8 and Windows RT.
For a list of all the new features that will be part of this push, check out my ZDNet colleague Ed Bott's post on the Mail/Calendar/People updates. Like many early Windows 8 and Windows RT users, I'm happy to see Mail get updates like the ability to create and delete folders and the ability to search for mail on the server, among others. Supposedly performance of all three apps is improved, even on low-power Surface RT devices.
But what about the other "core" Windows 8 and Windows RT apps -- especially Xbox Music, which has felt half-finished since it debuted as one of the bundled apps Microsoft delivered last October with Windows 8 and Windows RT? Today's blog post from the Windows services team is solely about Mail/Calendar/People. But according to one of my sources, who mentioned the coming March core-app updates, Xbox Music and the Bing AppEx applications were supposedly going to be refreshed this month, too.
There are still six more days in March, so it could happen. Or maybe these won't actually roll out until April.

I asked my original tipster whether the Xbox core-app refresh is imminent and was told that the Xbox Entertainment app team was still releasing minor internal updates over the weekend, but that they are "almost done."
The Bing AppEx team apps -- Weather, News, Sports, etc., which shipped preinstalled on Windows 8 and Windows RT -- may be poised for new updates. So far, no word from the Bing team on that, however.
Late last week, some of us took the appearance of a list of Microsoft-developed apps in the System Log on our machines to mean that the expected refreshes of all the core Windows 8/Windows RT apps were set to arrive imminently.
It turns out this may be unrelated, as Martin Geuss from drwindows.de noted over the weekend. Geuss said that all core apps are listed in the event entry on Windows 8 and Windows RT systems because all of these apps have received at least one update since Windows 8 and Windows RT were released.
Event-entry relevance aside, the expected and (hopefully) useful core-app updates are on their way.

Everyone's favorite social network has added everyone's favorite feature. That's right, Google+ is now supporting animated gifs as profile pics. "Our gif to you. You can now use animated gifs for your profile photo," the official Google+ account announced Monday afternoon.
The animated gif profile pic performs its ceaseless looping act on both desktop and mobile, but only on profile pages. Thankfully, those who hate the lively images -- this reporter included, as you may have guessed -- won't have to endure animated avatars as friends post to the stream, save for the occasional "so and so changed his profile photo" update.
Expectedly, commenters on the announcement post are either pissed or pleased about the news. A few obligatory "awesome" comments were interspersed between several "this sucks"-like reactions.
"I thought about making one of these, and then I remembered.....I'm not an idiot," Google+ user Bill Archinal wrote in comment.
Meanwhile, Al Hunt asked whether G+ users could auto-block people using the animated gifs. And poor Carles Company Soler wondered what we've done to deserve such punishment. I'm with you, Carles.

Facebook fixes comment threads for Pages and public figures

With conversation threads, the social network addresses a problem its most important customers experience daily: a deluge of crappy comments.

Facebook today announced the release of conversation threads, a new comments feature designed to organize and structure the often unruly comment threads on Pages and high-trafficked profiles. Conversation threads, available for Page owners and public figures with 10,000 followers or more, allow people to click a "reply" button, which sits alongside the "like" button, to respond directly to an individual comment and engage in a branched-off discussion.

SportsCenter hosted a Super Bowl chat with Herm Edwards, where viewers were able to ask questions and get direct responses from the former NFL coach and player. The most active conversations during the Q&A were surfaced higher in the thread, Facebook said.

The social network said that it's featuring the most active conversations atop posts, and re-odering the threads by relevance to each viewer. A Facebook member may find a particular conversation thread higher if they share connections to participants in a thread, for instance. "After months of testing, we have seen how the new feature can improve conversations and be used to start open dialogues with the community," Vadim Lavrusik, Facebook journalism program manager, wrote in a note posted to the social network.
The alteration corrects for a problem that Facebook's most important customers experience on a daily basis: a deluge of crappy comments. Brands and Facebook celebrities with hundred of thousands of followers are plagued by crummy comments, which often bury the more worthwhile nuggets posted to updates. Conversation threads partially remedy the issue and should allow brands and public figures to pinpoint and highlight the best discussions.
Facebook said the new threading feature is available only on the desktop for the time bing.

The most important thing to remember when wearing make up is that, it should highlight your assets and hide your flaws. NEW DELHI: Before this series, India's Test fortunes seemed to be in free fall. They had lost 0-4 twice in alien conditions in England and Australia, and then yielded a home series to England too.

It didn't help that they were in transition, and had lost a host of big names. It paved the way for some rare soul-searching. The selectors finally dropped big names like Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir. A younger crop was given the chance to show their mettle and seized the opportunity.

Murali Vijay finished as the top run-getter on either side, hitting two consecutive tons. Shikhar Dhawan got just one knock but made it count. Ironically, his record-busting, blazing 187 revived memories of the very man he had replaced, Sehwag.

The young lead spinner, R Ashwin, realized where he had erred against England and made quick changes to his technique to achieve consistency. He ended with 29 wickets, the highest for either side in this series and the seventh-best ever for India.

Cheteshwar Pujara continued from where he had left off against England and scored 419 runs at 83.8, reasserting his status as the new bedrock of the side. Seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar got into the act in Hyderabad and Mohali and picked crucial wickets.

Dhoni decided to bring in the wild card Ravindra Jadeja, who responded with 24 wickets at 17.45 with his left arm spin, including a first ever five-wicket haul in Delhi on Sunday which helped seal the match in India's favour.

The skipper, while maintaining equanimity in victory, stressed on the need for the youngsters to develop "good habits".

"With a young side you have to change a bit. You have to talk to them often, get them into a system where they do things that are supposed to be done. It's important for them to learn good habits which will remain with them when I'm not there."

Australia may not have been the strongest of teams, and the pitches may have played to India's advantage. Some of India's younger crop of players are as yet capable of performing only in certain conditions.

On Sunday, though, it became clear that under Dhoni, they were capable of learning, adapting and implementing changes to the side's benefit.

A statement has been made: At home, India remain extremely hard to beat. The confidence gained from this 4-0 win will help smoothen the rocky road ahead when this young side tours away.

T-Mobile kills off the wireless contract

The wireless carrier today seems to have finally done away entirely with contracts for wireless customers, part of broader changes intended to make T-Mobile more competitive.

The wireless carrier today seems to have finally done away entirely with contracts for wireless customers. This follows earlier moves that had allowed options including either a traditional two-year contract or no contract at all.
The shift is part of a broader transformation that CEO John Legere hinted at during his Consumer Electronics Show press conference in January, changes that are intended to make the carrier more competitive in the industry. As a distant fourth-place carrier among the national players, the company has been willing to demonstrate more aggressiveness in turning around its subscriber losses.

What's new today? T-Mobile's Web site now shows, for instance, that a customer could select an unlimited talk, text, and Web option that includes up to 500MB of high-speed data for a single phone for $50 a month. The price rises as the data level increases -- 2GB for $60, 4GB for $70, and so on.
The rate does not include the additional fee you pay for your phone. Instead of a subsidy, you pay a small fee on top of your phone bill each month to pay off your smartphone. But unlike the higher monthly fees you would normally pay a carrier under a contract, the fees stop once you pay off the phone.
Still, that means an additional fee for what would have been the life of a two-year contract. The Samsung Galaxy S3, for instance, would cost an extra $20 a month for 24 months, in addition to $109.99 up front. A lower-end Galaxy S2 will cost nothing up front, but would require a $16 fee on top of your phone bill for 24 months. Customers can opt to pay the full price instead. The Galaxy S3 costs $549.99.
T-Mobile has slowly shifted its focus to the so-called prepaid option as those plans have proven to be more popular for the carrier than the traditional contract model. The carrier has consistently bled contract customers over the last few years, with some switching to prepaid, but others leaving for the larger competitors. During CES, T-Mobile announced it would offer its no-strings unlimited data plan without a contract, a sign of today's broader move.
T-Mobile has a press event planned for this Tuesday, March 26, at which it will likely have more to say about its plan to be a wireless company that "doesn't act like one anymore."
The company is also expected to provide an update on its 4G LTE rollout plans. For now, it is the only national carrier to lack a 4G LTE option. So far, it has argued that its HSPA+ network -- which it calls 4G -- is fast enough, and reaches more people than some of its competitors' LTE networks. The BlackBerry Z10 launch, slated on Tuesday, is supposed to coincide with the launch of 4G LTE.
The 4G LTE announcements should address one of the knocks on T-Mobile's service. The carrier is also expected to eventually offer the iPhone, which would quell the complaint that T-Mobile lacks all of the marquee smartphones that its competitors offer.
The carrier's shift toward life in the prepaid lane is also moving forward on the business side, as its planned merger with MetroPCS last week cleared its final regulatory hurdle and now awaits just shareholder approval.

More tidbits are leaking out about the kinds of changes to expect from Windows Blue, the next big release of Microsoft's signature operating system.
In what is referred to as a prerelease version dubbed Build 9364, the Windows 8 Start screen appears with both larger and smaller Live Tile setups, increased user control over color personalization, new options in style settings, and an additional snap view to let users place apps side by side in a 50-50 arrangement, according to Tom Warren at the Verge, citing screenshots posted today to the Polish language Winforum site.

"Microsoft appears to be adding all of the necessary settings required to ensure tablet users don't have to drop to the desktop Control Panel to change things," Warren wrote.
Internet Explorer 11 also makes an appearance in the purported new build, at least in name. In addition, there are allegedly changes coming to Charms, including new "play" and screenshot options, and new options for the SkyDrive service.
A public preview of Windows Blue is expected in the next couple of months, according to Mary Jo Foley at our sister site ZDNet. And Blue isn't just the code name for the next version of Windows 8, but also for updates to Windows Phone, Windows Server, and Windows Services, Foley has said.
Other recent leaks about Windows Blue have suggested "dramatic" extensions to the touch capabilities in Windows and improvements to the speech-recognition feature in Windows Phones.
Windows Blue is also expected to offer improvements to the power efficiency of devices running the operating system.

Traffic pollution may cause 14% of childhood asthma: study

The study, released by the European Respiratory Journal, matched local health data with exposure to traffic pollution in Barcelona, Bilbao, Brussels, Granada, Ljubljana, Rome, Seville, Stockholm, Valencia and Vienna.

PARIS: As much as 14 percent of chronic childhood asthma may be caused by people living near busy roads and exposed to traffic pollution, a study in 10 European cities found Friday.

The study, released by the European Respiratory Journal, matched local health data with exposure to traffic pollution in Barcelona, Bilbao, Brussels, Granada, Ljubljana, Rome, Seville, Stockholm, Valencia and Vienna.

They calculated proximity to busy roads, defined as carrying 10,000 vehicles per day.

"We estimated that an average of 33,200 asthma cases (14 percent of all asthmatic children) were attributable to near-road traffic-related pollutants," the researchers wrote.

"In other words these cases would not have occurred if no one lived within the buffer zone or if those pollutants did not exist."

The results were comparable, the authors said, to the burden associated with passive smoking -- which the World Health Organisation blames for four to 18 percent of asthma cases in children.

Of the 10 cities studied, a third of the combined population was estimated to live within 75 metres of a busy road, and more than half within 150 metres.

The team also measured traffic pollution's impact on coronary heart disease among older adults, and estimated that 28 percent of such cases may be attributable to near-road exposure.

"Despite uncertainty and limitations, our results indicate that near-road traffic related pollution may be responsible for a large but preventable burden of chronic diseases and related acute morbidities in urban areas," said the study authors.

According to a new research, the most successful dieters are those who start slimming at the age of 28.

Women in their late twenties shed flab faster because they have more time and willpower than those of other ages, says the study of 3,000 women aged over 30.

Twenty-somethings are also more concerned about their weight and so remain focused on their weight loss goals.

On the other hand, those in their thirties are often too busy to watch their weight while many in their forties and fifties have simply 'lost interest' in getting the perfect body.

"With women getting married later than ever, many 28-year-old females will be single, on the dating scene and leading an active social life, which may explain why they are so successful at healthy eating and maintaining a good figure," the Daily Mail quoted Sue Beck, of Lambrini Light, which carried out the research, as saying.

"Many will also be at the peak of their career, leading fast-paced lives which will help shift any excess weight alongside a diet," Beck added.

BANGALORE: Microsoft is betting on a slew of new tablet computers that will hit the market in the coming weeks to lift the sales of Windows 8 in India, where the latest iteration of its popular operating system has had an uninspiring start.

"With a number of (Windows 8-based tablet) launches in March, I think we'll start seeing a lot more movement." Sanket Akerkar, managing director at Microsoft India, said.

Hewlett-Packard launched a Windows-8 based tablet aimed at the enterprise market for Rs 43,500 last week, while others such as Acer, Asus and Samsung are expected to launch at least four new Windows 8 tablets in the range ofRs 25,000 to Rs 40,000 over the next month and a half. "We are still in early days and there were only few of these tablets available during November, December and January," Akerkar said.

The Redmond, Washington-based software major launched Windows 8 on October 25. With its touch screen capability, the software can span multiple devices, from laptops and desktops to tablets and smartphones. However, the new operating system has not been able to boost PC sales that have been declining world over as users move to tablets and smartphones. Also, the new tablet-laptop hybrid too has not taken off in a big way.

While Microsoft continues to enjoy overwhelming dominance in operating systems for personal computers, laptops and net books, the world's largest software-maker is yet to find its footing in the smartphone and tablet market, where it faces stiff competition from Google's Android operating system and Apple's iOS.

Analysts expect Windows 8 to take its time to establish in the highly competitive market. "The shift to Windows 8 tablets is expected to be relatively slower," said Kiran Kumar, a senior analyst with technology market researcher IDC, who believes that market awareness for Windows 8 is still relatively low.

Android has about 88% market share in India's tablet market, while iOS has close to 10% share, according to CyberMedia Research. Windows-8 and Blackberry are expected to have around 1% each. CyberMedia Research estimates that over three million tablets were sold in India last year and that number will double in 2013. India is one of the fastest growing markets for Microsoft, where it has two development centres and over 5,000 employees. In 2012, Microsoft clocked Rs 5,417 crore in revenues from the country.

Microsoft's Akerkar claimed that initial sales of Windows 8-powered devices were much better compared to the previous iteration Windows 7 that came out in 2009. "We'll see the numbers to pick up this quarter," he said. Microsoft is expected to have sold over 60 million licences and upgrades of its latest operating system, despite weak PC sales. Faizal Kawooza, analyst with Cybermedia, says Windows 8 can succeed if it can bring out affordable tablets.

"With Indian corporations now opening up to tablets, there's enough scope for Windows 8 in the enterprise space," he said. "To attract consumer interest, they probably need to launch tablets priced at Rs 15,000-25,000." Globally, Android and iOS have a combined market share of 94% in tablets, as per IDC. Windows-based tablets have about 3% share.

Seeking a rare clean sweep, Indian skipper MS Dhoni set the usual snares and simply waited for the results to follow.

On offer was a drier-than-usual, abrasive, cracked pitch aiding turn and shades of variable bounce, and two spinners in Ashwin (4/40 off 30 overs) and Jadeja (2/34 off 22) who could thrive in the conditions. Almost like clockwork, a procession of batsmen left Australia reeling.

With Shane Watson leading after Clarke's bad back expectedly failed to improve, the Aussies decided to make first use of the pitch after winning the toss, like they have throughout the series.

Offering only pockets of resistance in the first and third sessions, the Aussies sank from 94/2 at lunch to 153/7 at tea before the tail lifted the total up by the bootstraps to a more cringe-proof 231/8 by stumps, with an impressive 98 overs bowled in the day's play.

It wasn't the spinners and their disciplined lengths - apart from an off-colour Pragyan Ojha - or any demon in the pitch which undid Australia's top batsmen. Their feeble attempts to counter-attack simply fell flat on a pitch not conducive for strokeplay.

Only one dismissal, that of a fluently-scoring Philip Hughes (45 off 59 balls; 10x4), could be said to have been indirectly influenced by the pitch. Immediately after one delivery had kept low, a short-of-a-length Ishant Sharma delivery in the 21st over rose alarmingly and thudded into Hughes' helmet, breaking the grill and unnerving the batsman.

Hughes fell two balls later to the same bowler. Some of the other 'specialist' batsmen - a term that can only be loosely used in an Aussie line-up chock full of all-rounders - had only themselves to blame.

Warner slashed at a wide and loose one from Ishant. Watson hung around for 56 balls for his 17 and survived a complicated stumping appeal before charging down to a beauty from Jadeja and paying the price. Even here, the pattern had eerie familiarity - Jadeja has now dismissed an Aussie skipper six out of seven times in this series.

Maxwell managed an ill-thought half-slog off Jadeja that landed in Ishant's arms at mid-on. Wade, meanwhile, was unlucky to be given out caught at silly point.

The middle session belonged to India. Soon after the break, an astute Dhoni instructed Ashwin to switch to an over-the-stumps line to Cowan, who immediately missed a sweep and was castled. The industrious Cowan (38 off 99b; 7x4) and later Steve Smith (46 off 145; 3x4, 2x6) were the only ones apart from the tail to apply themselves.

Smith fashioned a gritty late-afternoon resistance, putting on 53 for the eighth-wicket with Peter Siddle, who has so far played out 125 balls and is batting on 47, a Test-best.

Siddle and Pattinson then got together and have added 42 so far, with the commendable fightback putting paid to India's hopes of closing out the Aussie innings on Day One.

The crowds, which largely stayed away on Friday, are expected to swell when India bat, with all eyes on Tendulkar and debutant Rahane.

The Aussies, who made as many as five changes, will bank on their pacers to ask tough questions on a difficult pitch. Watson must be praying for a twist in this unfolding tale of spin.

2: Number of series in which Dhoni has lost all the tosses. Apart from this series against Australia, he had lost all tosses in the three-Test series against Sri Lanka in 2010. Overall, he has lost 29 tosses surpassing Sourav Ganguly, who lost 28.

Censor board not doing its job properly, Delhi high court says

During the hearing, the bench said the censor board has become “very generous” nowadays and “passing or giving” certificate to every film without any objection.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court on Friday slammed the censor board for not doing its job "properly" and asked it and the Centre to respond to two separate PILs alleging vulgar contents in Salman Khan-starrer Dabangg 2 and Saif Ali Khan's Race 2.

"Nowadays, the censor board is not doing its duty properly," a bench comprising Chief Justice D Murugesan and Justice VK Jain remarked while asking the information and broadcasting ministry, CBFC and producers of Dabangg 2 and Race 2 to file their responses by May 14.

While hearing the PIL of lawyer Sanjay Kumar seeking a ban on a "provocative item number" of Dabangg 2, the bench ordered deletion of names from an array of parties like Kareena Kapoor Khan, on whom the song was filmed, director Arbaaz Khan and musicians duo Sajid and Wajid.

"Why you have made the actress a party? This is not a criminal complaint. File a fresh memo of parties. Delete the name of the actress, director and musicians ..." Justice Jain asked during the hearing.

The bench, however, refused to stay the release of DVDs of Dabangg 2 and Race 2 and their further screening on TV channels. It, meanwhile, gave the petitioners liberty to approach it again if they receive information that the films are going to be shown on channels.

"We are not experts and have not seen the movies. How can we stay the films on the basis of photographs we saw here?" the bench said.

The other PIL, filed by social worker Teena Sharma, has sought an immediate ban on further screening of Race 2 in cinema halls and its telecast. It also sought deletion of explicit scenes and "vulgar" dialogues in the film.

'Board generous'

During the hearing, the bench said the censor board has become "very generous" nowadays and "passing or giving" certificate to every film without any objection.

"Nowadays, you have TV in each room of your house. We have now developed a culture that children sleep in a separate room and they are provided TV also ... Parents don't take their children to theatre with them now," it said, adding the content of films should not be "degraded" and it should be such that the whole family can watch them together.

One of PILs alleged "the lyrics of this famous song in Hindi film Dabangg 2, woman is compared to be a grilled chicken to be eaten up with alcohol! And other objectionable and slang words towards girl ..."

The petition has sought a direction to the I&B ministry to "take strict preventive measures and to adopt an effective mechanism to stop these kinds of vulgar songs and obscenity in Indian Films."

Earlier, the bench had disposed of Sharma's PIL against Race 2 and had directed the central government to look into the issue raised by her and take a decision within 15 days.

Aggrieved by "inaction" on the part of the government, Sharma had approached the court again which on Friday issued the notices to the Centre and others.
