Apple Pay can transform mobile payments

Apple Pay can transform mobile payments

Apple Pay can transform mobile payments
Apple’s new payments service Apple Pay could be a big game-changer.

NEW DELHI: Although it will be a long while before it is available in India, Apple's new payments service Apple Pay could be a big game-changer.

Apple Pay will be available in the US beginning October 20 with all Apple devices that feature fingerprint scan using the Touch ID.

For shopping in stores, Apple Pay will work with iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and with Apple Watch. For online shopping within apps, Apple Pay will be available on iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3.

Using Apple Pay in stores is promised to be fast and easy. One simply has to hold iPhone near the contactless reader while keeping a finger on Touch ID.
The new service will be enabled on October 20 with the free iOS 8.1 update.

Apple Pay is designed to protect the user's personal information. It doesn't collect any transaction information that can be tied back to a user and payment transactions are between the user, the merchant and the user's bank.

According to Apple, it won't collect the users' purchase history. So when we are shopping in a store or restaurant, Apple won't know what we bought, where we bought it, or how much was paid for it.

Actual card numbers will not be stored on the device. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is created, encrypted and stored in the Secure Element of the device. The Device Account Number in the Secure Element is walled off from iOS and not backed up to iCloud.

"Our team has worked incredibly hard to make Apple Pay private and secure, with the simplicity of a single touch of your finger," said Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice-president of Internet Software and Services. "The reaction to Apple Pay has been amazing. We continue to add more Apple Pay ready banks, credit card companies and merchants, and think our users will love paying with Apple Pay."

In the US, Apple Pay already supports credit and debit cards from all the three major payment networks, American Express, MasterCard and Visa, issued by the top US banks. In addition to American Express, Bank of America, Capital One Bank, Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo and others, who announced support in September, more than 500 new banks from across the country have signed on to Apple Pay.

Users can make purchases in stores and within apps, with credit cards issued by many of the leading banks, which make up 83 per cent of the credit card purchase volume in the US.

Leading payment solution providers and terminal suppliers are working to bring merchants in stores and in apps the ability to easily, securely and privately accept payments using Apple Pay.

Checkout is simple and can be done with a single touch—there's no need to manually fill out lengthy account forms or repeatedly type in shipping and billing information, says Apple. Your actual card number too is kept private and not shared with the online merchant.

Online shopping within apps allows users to pay for physical goods and services, including apparel, electronics, health and beauty products, tickets and more. Apps with the ability to use Apple Pay at launch include: Apple Store app, Chairish, Fancy, Groupon, HotelTonight, Houzz, Instacart, Lyft, OpenTable, Panera Bread, Spring, Staples, Target and Uber.

Apple has claimed that many more will support Apple Pay by the end of this year with popular apps such as Airbnb, Disney Store, Eventbrite, JackThreads, Levi's Stadium by VenueNext, Sephora, Starbucks, StubHub, Ticketmaster and Tickets.com, among others.

It is the first time that Apple is making the iPhone available at midnight in India, in line with the practice it follows elsewhere.

NEW DELHI: Apple has started selling its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones in India.

It is the first time that Apple is making the iPhone available at midnight in India, in line with the practice it follows elsewhere.

Apple premium retailers and authorized dealers delivered phones to customers who had pre-ordered them by making partial payments. The company has reportedly 50,000 to 55,000 units of its new iPhones to India in the first phase to ensure there is adequate supplies for Thursday midnight's launch. It has received 21,000 pre-orders as of Tuesday.

The 16GB version of Apple iPhone 6 is available at Rs 53,500, while the 64GB version is priced at Rs 62,500. The 128GB version of the phone sells for Rs 71,500.

The 16GB version of Apple iPhone 6 Plus is available at Rs 62,500, while the 64GB version is priced at Rs 71,500. The 128GB version of the phone sells for Rs 80,500.

Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are being sold by the company's distribution partners, namely Ingram Micro, Redington, Rashi Peripherals and Reliance.

The previous version of iPhone was launched in India for price starting at Rs 53,500 which was recently priced at around Rs 30,000 a unit on an e-commerce website.

Just to recap, the two iPhone models take Apple to the big-screen smartphone segment, sporting 4.7- and 5.5-inch screens respectively. The iPhone 6's 4.7-inch display sports a resolution of 1334x750p, while the iPhone 6 Plus' 5.5-inch display sports a resolution of 1920x1080p. iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are the thinnest ever Apple has ever made. iPhone 5S and 5 are 7.6mm thick, but iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are even thinner at 6.8mm and 7.1mm respectively.

Powered by the new A8 processor, iPhone 6 is up to 50% more energy efficient, so you can have higher sustained performance, claimed Apple. The 64-bit CPU architecture-based A8 processor is 20% faster in application processing and 50% faster in rendering graphics compared to its predecessor. It is able to sustain performance-intensive tasks like playing a game at higher frame rates.

The two iPhone 6 models sport an 8MP iSight camera that features phase detection. Despite no increase in camera resolution, iPhone 6 takes 43MP panorama photos.

Samsung achieves 940Mbps download speed in 5G test

Samsung achieves 940Mbps download speed in 5G test
Samsung says it's made a couple of breakthroughs in terms of wireless network connectivity — which means your phone will be able to connect to the web 30 times faster.

Samsung says it's made a couple of breakthroughs in terms of wireless network connectivity — which could mean your phone will be able to connect to the web 30 times faster than it does today.

The company has been testing 5G network speeds for the past few months, but just broke a record for the speediest data transfer, according to its Samsung Tomorrow blog. During its tests, the company clocked 7.5 gigabits per second, or 940 megabits per second, which is said to be among the fastest 5G data transmission rates recorded.

If those numbers are accurate, that would be an insanely fast connection. Speeds in the 60Mbps range are considered to be pretty fast by 4G LTE standards. Samsung says the 5G technology it's working on will bring in network speeds that are 30 times as fast as the 4G LTE networks we're used to today.

What's more, the company claims it was also able to maintain a 150Mbps connection in a moving vehicle traveling at about 62 miles per hour.

Samsung says its test is the first successful 5G trial to take place outside as well, as it claims all other tests are typically performed indoors in laboratories.

Despite Samsung's findings, it's unlikely that we'll see 5G networks roll out anytime soon. Experts have previously said that early deployment will begin in 2020, and widespread adoption is expected around 2024.

When 5G does eventually roll out, it's likely to be focused on supporting various types of connected devices rather than sheer speed.

"If you say speed is the real thing we need to improve in 5G, you're missing the point," Tod Sizer, vice president of the Wireless Research Program at Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs told Business Insider in July.

Samsung's announcement comes just two days after it also claimed to discover a new Wi-Fi breakthrough that would allow users to download one gigabyte in just 3 seconds.

Check out Samsung's demo video below.

Google's biggest phone so far Nexus 6 packs 6" QHD screen
Google's Lollipop-running phablet, Nexus 6 comes with 6-inch Quad HD display, a 13MP camera and dual front-facing stereo speakers.

Google has announced the Nexus 6, and it's built by Motorola.

The phone is the biggest Google has put out yet and packs a whopping 6-inch Quad HD display, a 13MP camera, and dual front-facing stereo speakers, all built into a brushed aluminium body.

The phone runs on a 2.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor, and comes in 32GB and 64GB storage variants. The battery is also a biggy at 3,220mAh, and we expect it'll need it.

The phone is essentially an inflated Moto X when you look at the design, which is no bad thing. We just hope you like your handsets big.

Tasty treat
It also comes running Android 5.0 Lollipop (yes, that name is now confirmed) which launches today also on the Nexus 9 tablet. Lollipop introduces a new power-saving feature that will supposedly juice out an extra 90 minutes of power.

Google says the Lollipop update will hit the Nexus 5, 7, 10 and Google Play edition devices "in the coming weeks".

The Nexus 6 will go up for pre-order in late October, and will be available in stores in November.

Apple set to unveil new iPads, as rivals are gaining ground

Apple set to unveil new iPads, as rivals are gaining ground

Apple set to unveil new iPads, as rivals are gaining ground
Apple iPad is still the most popular tablet computer, but it faces tougher competition from tablets made by Amazon, Samsung and Lenovo.

SAN FRANCISCO: Consumers around the world seem to have an endless appetite for new versions of Apple's iPhone. But that hearty taste hasn't extended lately to the company's other big i-product, the iPad.

After four years of dominating sales, the iPad is slipping against its peers. It is still the most popular tablet computer, but it faces tougher competition from tablets made by Amazon, Samsung and Lenovo.

Can an upgrade reverse that trend?

During an event at its Cupertino, California, headquarters on Thursday, Apple is set to unveil new iPads that are expected to include fingerprint sensors for each model. A major revision of the full-size tablet, the iPad Air, is also expected.

The new Air, which is Apple's larger and more expensive tablet, will be much thinner and faster than the current one, according to an Apple employee who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the plans were not yet official.

The new iPads are also expected to include support for Apple Pay, the mobile payments system that Apple introduced last month for making purchases using the fingerprint sensor inside apps, rather than having to enter a credit card number. And for those looking for a new color, gold iPads will be added to the mix.

Apple may have leaked some of its own news on Wednesday. An iPad instruction manual, written by Apple, surfaced on iBooks, Apple's digital bookstore, with illustrations showing a new iPad Air and an iPad Mini including fingerprint sensors and improved cameras. An Apple spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment.

The iPad now has a 26.9% share of the global market, ahead of Samsung with 17.2% and Lenovo with 4.9%, according to the research firm IDC. But in the second quarter, Apple's iPad sales declined 9.3% compared with the same period a year ago, IDC said.

Part of the reason is that consumer interest in this kind of device — from any manufacturer — may also be waning. Shipments of tablets skyrocketed from 18 million in 2010 to 207 million last year, according to the industry analysis firm Gartner. But this year, Gartner predicts tablet shipments worldwide will be up 11 percent, a significant drop from a 55% increase in 2013.

"There were a certain number of people that were excited about tablets for a while," said Mika Kitagawa, an analyst for Gartner. "But it turned out that tablets after all are not really a great product for some things, especially productivity and work. So some people actually go back to the laptop."

Theories abound as to why sales of the iPad, in particular, are slowing. Mostly, though, Apple faces intense competition from companies offering tablets for lower costs. Some, like those sold by Micromax in India, cost as little as $50; Amazon's Kindle Fire can be had for as little as $100. Samsung Electronics offers tablets in different screen sizes at various prices, from the middle tier to the high end.

The cheaper tablets are "not really a comparison with iPad, but for those people who just want to do content consumption, those are good enough products," Kitagawa said.

Another trend hurting overall tablet sales, analysts say, is that smartphone screens just keep getting bigger. Big-screen phones, or so-called phablets — a blurring of the line between a phone and a tablet — appear to be eating away at sales of smaller tablets.

"When an opportunity arises to collapse a couple of categories together, that's attractive," said Jan Dawson, an independent telecom analyst for Jackdaw Research. "Some people who use a phablet will end up deciding to forgo a tablet, seeing one device as enough."

And for years, while tablet sales were on the rise, personal computers were taking a beating. But that started to change for some PC makers in the third quarter.

PC shipments over the last quarter fell roughly 1%, a notable improvement from the 10 percent drop in 2013. Analysts said businesses were buying PCs again partly because Microsoft discontinued support for an older version of Windows, called XP, which pushed many businesses to upgrade to new systems.

At the Cupertino event, Apple is also expected to show a new iMac with a sharper screen, and to give a release date for the next Mac operating system, OS X Yosemite, the Apple employee said.

Some moves Apple is making in the background could be even more important for the iPad than upgrades. In July, Apple announced a partnership with IBM to strengthen iPads and iPhones for use in businesses. The companies said they are working on more than 100 business software programs tailored for use in industries including retailing, health care, transportation, banking, insurance and telecommunications.

Shiny new iPads may sound more alluring, but improving business interest in the iPad is important to Apple. Chris Hazelton, a research director for 451 Research, said that among businesses, interest in using tablets has stagnated. In May, the company surveyed about 1,500 people involved with information technology spending in their companies, and found that 26% of respondents were planning to buy tablets for their organizations; that figure was also 26% in May 2013.

The partnership with IBM will probably accelerate development of apps for business use, beyond email and calendars. That could give businesses more incentive to buy large numbers of iPads for their employees, Hazelton said.

"The next kind of stage of innovation in this market is really going to be software-driven," Hazelton said. He added that banks and government agencies could make good use of Apple's fingerprint sensor as an extra security feature for gaining access to confidential materials inside iPad apps.

Inside Apple, another project aimed at professionals is an iPad with a jumbo screen, according to two employees who spoke on condition they not be named because the product is not yet finished, nor is it considered official yet.

In a recent interview about Apple's partnership with IBM, Timothy D. Cook, Apple's chief executive, acknowledged that while iPads and iPhones were used by over 92% of the Fortune Global 500 companies, there was still a vast, untapped market among other companies.

"The penetration is low, and the ceiling is so far above us it's unbelievable," Cook said.

Delhi HC stays CCI's Rs 1-crore fine on Google
The Delhi HC stayed an order of the CCI imposing a penalty of Rs 1 crore on Google for allegedly failing to provide information in a probe into its alleged unfair trade practices in India.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court today stayed an order of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) imposing a penalty of Rs 1 crore on US-based Google for allegedly failing to provide information in a probe into its alleged unfair trade practices in India.

A bench of Justice Vibhu Bakhru also issued a notice to the CCI on the plea of the internet major and asked the panel to file its counter affidavit within four weeks.

The court also restrained the CCI from disclosing the confidential information related to the Google.

"Prima facie, we are of the view that whatever information the petitioner (Google) considers confidential shall not be disclosed," it said.

However, the court, for the time being, did not stay the ongoing probe against Google.

The court's direction came on a plea moved by Google which has alleged the CCI has 'wrongly' imposed a fine of Rs 1 crore on it and it was not heard before the order was passed by the panel.

Google has also said the order was a 'complete abuse' of authority by the CCI.

However, the CCI opposed the claim of the internet major that it was not heard saying the panel had accorded a 'through' hearing.

During the hearing, the court said "it is true that this (CCI) order contains something which is not correct."

The case before the CCI relates to the allegations that Google has been abusing its 'dominant position' in the internet search engine space.

It was also alleged that Google provides a number of vertical search services like YouTube, Google News, Google Maps etc and in order to promote its vertical search services, it mixes many of vertical results into organic search results.

The effect of such manipulation of results was that Google's vertical search partners will appear predominantly when an internet user searches for some information irrespective of whether the search results are most popular or relevant, said the allegations before the CCI.
