The Telecom Commission finally accepted Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (Trai) recommendation for full mobile number portability (MNP) on Wednesday paving the way for one-nation-one-number by March 31 next year.
Subscribers will be able to change their service providers but retain their numbers even if they relocate to another telecom circle. Currently, subscribers can retain their numbers only within a particular telecom circle in what is called limited MNP-for example, a subscriber in Delhi NCR can subscribe to another operator only within Delhi NCR. As per latest Trai data, about 13 crore subscribers have requested for MNP as on August 31.
Trai had recommended more than a year ago that it should be mandatory for telcos to implement full number portability within six months.
Accepting Trai's recommendations on full MNP, the Commission has also asked Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to implement full number portability by March 31, 2015.
The Commission had approved full MNP in June but referred the matter to Trai for information and clarification related to entry fees.
Trai's mandate for full MNP in September 2013 was rejected by DoT over issues related to entry fees and whether the task of MNP rollout should be given to the existing two companies or fresh bid should be invited.
Subsequently, Trai recommended that the two companies, Syniverse Technologies and MNP Interconnection Telecom, which currently extend MNP services within telcom circles, should also be given the mandate to extend full MNP. The sectoral regulator had also recommended that there should be no change or hike in entry fees, performance bank guarantee (PBG) and financial bank guarantee (FBG) for the two MNP providers.
The sectoral regulator had further said that the two number portability service providers must not be charged more for full MNP and charges related to entry fees, FBG and PBG must be as per the existing licensing conditions. The two service providers were given MNP licence in 2009 while it was introduced in January 2011.

After allegedly falling foul with RBI, Uber has come under the scanner of the Services Tax Department.

MUMBAI: After allegedly falling foul with RBI, the US-based transport app provider Uber, which offers its services to around 1,200 cab operators in India's 10 top cities, has come under the scanner of the Services Tax Department.

"We have sent a tax enquiry to Uber. So far, they have not paid us a single penny in taxes. We have not sent them a demand notice as they don't have an office in the country, but are operating through their Netherlands arm," Mumbai Service Tax Commissioner SK Solanki told PTI.

When asked what is the quantum of the money they are in default of, Solanki said: "The department has not sent a demand notice to them but an enquiry, seeking clarifications.

"Their headquarters has informed us that some representative from their Netherlands office will meet us. We will issue them a demand notice after getting their response because we are not sure who is liable to pay the tax — Uber or the cabbies. But someone has to pay," he said.

Uber has become popular by offering luxury car rides for a little more than the regular fare.

The service tax notice to Uber makes it the first such demand to a foreign service provider in the e-commerce space in the country.

The San Francisco-based Uber claims to be the world's largest transport app service provider by online aggregation of luxury cab operators, and has been under legal and regulatory lens in almost all the markets it operates in like the home market US, Germany, Britain, Poland, Brazil, Korea, among others. It is present in over 200 cities globally.

In August this year, the Reserve Bank had reportedly asked it to stop receiving payments with single-factor authentication from October 31, which would effectively mean that it will have to shut shop by the end of the month here.

When told that Uber claims it is not in default, Solanki said: "I don't understand how they are different from any other taxi operator like Meru, TabCab etc who all pay service tax. We are very sure that either Uber pay us the tax or cabbies do so. But getting it from some 1,200 cabbies individually is not easy."

When contacted for response, Uber communications head for APAC Region, Evelyn Tay in an email told PTI: "Uber complies with all applicable tax laws, and pays the relevant tax in every territory it operates in. All payments on the Uber system are cashless and fully traceable in an industry that has been notoriously cash-based for years."

The privately held company, set up in March 2009 by Travis Kalanick (chief executive) and Garrett Camp, has Goldman Sachs and Google Ventures among others as investors and offers vehicles for hire, ride-sharing through its app.

Xiaomi hits back at Apple over theft accusation
Xiaomi has refuted Apple's allegation of stealing iPhone technology, saying one can only judge its products after using them.

BEIJING: Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has refuted Apple's allegation of stealing iPhone technology, saying one can only judge its products after using them.

Responding to Apple's design head Jony Ive's accusation that Xiaomi has stolen iPhone technology, president Lin Bin said Ive should use a Xiaomi phone to know the difference between the two gadgets.

"Xiaomi is a very open company, which would never force anyone to use its products. However, one can only judge Xiaomi's gadgets after he or she has used them," Lin was quoted as saying by the state-run China News Service.

"I'm very willing to give a Xiaomi cell phone to him (Jony Ive) as present, and I look forward to hearing his remarks after he uses it," Lin said.

While responding to a question in San Francisco on Thursday about common features between the two phones, Ive said, "I don't see it as flattery. I see it as theft, and it's lazy. I don't think it's ok at all."

Xiaomi surpassed Samsung and Apple to become the biggest smartphone maker in China in the second quarter of this year, according to a report from Canalys.

Lin said the biggest challenge for Xiaomi currently was to increase its productivity.

In the first half of the year, Xiaomi produced 26 million cell phones and is expected to cross a total of over 60 million this year.

"At present, we can produce 6 to 7 million cell phones each month, and we will continuously improve that," Lin said.

Lei Jun, Xiaomi's founder, said that Xiaomi would not go public in the next five years.

With a 10-member team, Pocket Films receives over 22 M pageviews every month


Pocket Films is a distributor of short, independent, animation films and documentaries which encourages independent, upcoming and novice filmmakers. The company was started by Tejash Shah, Kaushal Shah and Sameer Mody in 2006 as 1takemedia.com with the intent of providing opportunities for the film and TV industry.

The trio started with a database (online yellow pages) for the industry, followed by providing jobs and casting opportunities and finally distribution of content and film contests.
“While screening candidates for the jobs vertical, we observed that most resumes included an association with a short film or documentary. Upon further inquiry we got to know that a majority of them had no idea what to do with such films,” says Sameer.
By April 2010, the trio divided the business verticals among themselves, and Sameer took over the content and contests vertical of the business. “In 2012, we rebranded ourselves as ‘Pocket Films’, to clearly define our activities and also avoid confusion with the other verticals of 1takemedia.com,” adds Sameer.
During 2008, the trio realized that a lot of talent and content was not being able to reach out to a wider audience. YouTube had started in India around that time. “We seized the opportunity and became one of the early channel partners for YouTube and created a channel for screening of short films, documentaries and indie films,” points out Sameer.
PocketFilms
At present, the company receives about 22.5 million pageviews on a monthly basis across network of channels on Youtube. Pocket Films has consistently grown year on year. From one channel on YouTube generating around 3000 views a day in 2010 to a network of channels currently generating over 750,000 views a day, it has (www.youtube.com/pocketfilms) 3,000 plus films and 100,000 plus subscribers.
Plans for scaling up
“We recently partnered with NDTV Prime for a weekly show titled ‘Prime Talkies with Pocket Films’ to showcase some of the best films from our library on national television. Short films were generally believed to remain on online platforms (which is our strength), but with the support of NDTV we have managed to reach out to TV audiences throughout the country thereby reaching out to a demographic which is not necessarily online,” says Sameer.
Among other new initiatives, Pocket Films started producing animated content for kids though its sister channel, Little Kids Channel.
Revenue model
The company earns revenues primarily from advertisements alongside content on the internet and via some pay-per-view platforms on mobile. “While we are growing at a healthy rate of 60-75% annually, revenues from digital advertisements still have a long way to go. A lean team of under 10 enables us to keep a check on costs and remain profitable,” adds Sameer.
Motivation behind being an entrepreneur
“Being from a Gujarati business family, one can say that entrepreneurship is in our genes. Doing business is the only way to think. Secondly, despite all the difficulties faced by an entrepreneur the freedom of being your boss is paramount. Further, the satisfaction of achieving your goals and make a difference to a large number of people is something I wouldn’t trade for anything,” says Sameer.

Medical tests are a pain in themselves. Add to the discrepancies in prices and quality and the act of getting a medical test done is worse than the treatment that follows. With illnesses getting increasingly complicated and doctors ordering more and more tests, this problem will only get worse.

So here’s DoctorC. A mobile and internet application that brings transparency in medical testing and creates a level playing field in laboratory testing. Search for a test online or on the app, and you’ll get a list of labs that conduct the test along with prices and an option to book the test at special rates.
The company is headquartered in Hyderabad and will launch in Bangalore this month. It is aiming for a pan-India presence by 2016.
It was founded by the late Dr. Dayakar Reddy, with the idea of aligning the interests of customers and diagnostic centers.  The four co-founders, ex-Silicon Valley engineers and Ivy League graduates, joined in last year with their technical know-how to create and grow the company.
“Think of us as similar to travel aggregators,” said Mansi Gandhi, COO of DoctorC. “You can check prices, read and write reviews and book tests online or through the mobile app.”
The first step, says Mansi, was to break their own misconceptions.
“For instance, our natural assumption was that patients go to the labs that their doctors recommend. But there is a new category of educated patients who research the tests, search for alternatives. Those are our natural target customers.”
DoctorC has also tied up with diagnostic labs to offer discounts on tests booked through their app. They are a 20 member team handling marketing, customer service and business development.

The company recently raised Rs 2.5 crore through seed funding from California based Leviathan Investments headed by Anil Dharni , Ram Gudavalli and Andrew Keidel, the founder of gaming startup Funzio.
Other investors include Spice Capital which has startups including Druva and StayZilla in its portfolio, and Indian Angel Network members Sanjay Jesrani, founder and CEO of Go North Ventures.
In a year, DoctorC has reached a turnover of Rs 1.4 crore and estimates that the diagnostic market will rise to $10 billion by 2016. Around 70 percent of treatment decisions in India are based on test results and diagnostics services constitute one of the most critical components of medical care.

Speaking about this opportunity in Israel, Pavan shared
Israel is miles ahead of India in terms of maturity of security products. It was a good learning curve meeting various security experts here advising us about various aspects of our product.
This isn’t the first venture for the brother duo. Earlier they had started another security startup, Array Shield that designed software security products in the area of multifactor authentication and software protection. It was one of the winners of TechSparks 2010.They were working on methods and systems with pending patents. The duo had the same mission to provide low cost, easy to use and highly secure software security solutions globally but couldn’t make it for long with it. They didn’t fail with this product but probably they were a bit ahead of its times and also operating in a very niche market.
Google loves this space
Google is the biggest scrapper on the Internet scrapping every website to improve its search results. A few months back in February 2014, Google launched its own new tool, Scrapper Report to fight web scraping. This launch was ridiculed and mocked by Internet users as a strategy to not show scraper websites in search results.
Google believes in transforming the scrapped data with great design for the ease of users. Its not doubt true that in most cases users do benefit from this but then the websites with original content are losing their battle, they don’t get that traffic – thanks to Google. In its mission to simplify search and improve search experience, Google has been killing many innocent websites.

Consider yourself confused about which movie to go for near you, you do the usual thing to go and search for this on Google. Google to give a rich user experience shall show you scrapped data in a very structured form but in this whole process the ticketing websites are losing their traffic. Not everyone who checks about a movie online books it online.
Pavan and his team are passionately marching towards solving this scrapping problem and provide a great experience to both content creators and consumers. Time shall stand testimony to how this whole market evolves and what role does Google play in this fight.

A customer with goMowgli can travel across Karnataka by hopping on and off a bus. He can buy a 19-day pass (also known as Masala Dose Pass) and then use that pass to travel across the state to complete all the 19 legs of the journey as and when they want in a period of 180 days. They can hop off impulsively, whenever or wherever just by informing the guide. To resume their journey, they have to call the customer care or send a mail to the team to book a seat on the day he wants to travel, as per the timetable listed by the company.  And they can resume their journey.

The point is transport companies offer you only transport. We are a flexible tour company and offer some brilliant tours which local government buses will never be able to offer. Also, we take you to offbeat places and pick you up and drop you off from the closest point where you stay. You can stay at your friend’s place and we will pick you up from a nearby point. With a local transport, you need to do the long walk to the bus stand carrying your heavy backpack and the wet laundry from yesterday.”

We’ve been through five city regional events and now, it’s time for the Grand Finale of TechSparks 2014. In its 5th edition, the finale this time round is spanning two days- October 17 and 18. The main conference is on the 18th while the Hackathon and Workshops are happening on the 17th. The stage is set for the developers to come and hack their way to a prize money of INR 1 lakh. And the theme for the hackathon is mobile. The likes of FreeCharge and CommonFloor will have their senior technical teams at the event to help developers build.
The problem statement is also set, for instance, here’s what CommonFloor wants the developers to work on-
The way brokers operate is rather inefficient. Most of these brokers are still using conventional way of communication- SMS/CALL to manage their clients. Considering the fact that a single broker manages 20-25 clients on a normal day, it is highly difficult to manage the work. This is also a big concern from the buyer/seller side as they don’t have an option for better communication. This demands a lot of time & energy from buyer/seller.
Now, this is an interesting problem to solve. Considering the mobile penetration in India, and considering the fact that cheap and good mobiles are available for brokers, is there anything that can be done to solve this problem? CommonFloor wants the developers to come up with answers at the TechSparks Hackathon (register for free).

How to network in an event?


“A question most of us remember when we are attending an event.”
In the past 10 years, I have attended hundreds of events (like some of you reading this). Some have been draining and seemed like a waste of time, while in some I have managed to crack a deal or two. I am in no way an authority on how to network, but I think I have a reasonable hang on how to do it right, and how to maximize on the limited time, which most of us have, while attending an event; as they say, experience is the best teacher. So here are my two bits, please feel free to add yours.

1. Be very clear why you want to attend an event. What do you want to achieve or get out of it? It can be as specific as meeting with so-and-so or non-specific like just to get inspired and be in the energetic company of doers. Having a clear objective is a sure shot way to getting what you want. You know what you are going after.
An example that can aptly sum up the importance of focus is the following lines from ‘Alice in Wonderland’:
 “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?’ said Alice.
That depends on where you want to get to,’ said the Cat.
‘I don’t much care where,’ said Alice.
‘Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,’ said the Cat.”
2. How prepared are you to attend an event? Do you have your business card ready? Another big question is, is your business card telling a great /different story? I recently attended an event and came back with 40 cards. Am sorry to say but most of the cards failed to impress, because they were all so similar. If you are an app development company, how is your card telling your story? After all, once the noisy event is over, you will only have your calling card as your reminder. You want the prospect to call you back and give you a meeting. Is your card giving you the extra push for the same? Please think about it. A business card is a small but an effective strategy since the early days. As entrepreneurs, we have to sell all the time, and what better occasion than an event with diverse people and opportunities? And let’s not forget it’s always a great conversation starter. Try it.
3. How are you converting leads for yourself in an event? Let’s not forget that people are more committed to their own ideas than your ideas. They are trying to achieve their objectives as you are, from the event. The smartest people I have seen turn their own ideas into the idea of the person they are pitching to, selling to or meeting. How do you do that? By listening to people; actually, by genuinely listening to what they are saying. You will be surprised how easily you can pitch in an event where everyone is so open to anything and anyone. You can simply stand out by being a good listener. Listening will arm you with the right ammunition of aligning your objective with that of your target prospect.
4. Make yourself stand out. How? Practice. As the legendary Dale Carnegie once said, “There are always three speeches for every one you actually gave: the one you practiced, the one you gave and the one you wish you gave.” Practice. Practice your pitch, talk, conversation openers, one-liners… you never know how handy it will be. Soon, this will come naturally. Standing out in a crowd has to be practiced. Nobody is born with it. I especially admire Deep Kalra. If you talk to him in an event, you know he is talking to you and is giving you his full, undivided attention. He does not seem distracted and you know he is not faking it. He seems genuinely interested in you. If he has met you once earlier, he will remember your name and something about you. He is invested in others whom he is talking to. Naturally, the others get invested in him.
5. Ignore the extra-confident, over opinionated and the always-in-a-group people, who seem to know it all.  Their extra confidence can be discouraging, especially if you are a lone ranger in a big party. Walk confidently with a smile. Trust me a big smile will get you through most people. Yes. Even a Ted talk, talks about it!
6. Don’t praise a speaker like everyone does. After a speaker has given a talk, I see everyone flocking to the speaker with the same story, ‘you were brilliant on stage’. Be different. Say something like, ‘I totally loved what you said but don’t you think the problem is actually much deeper and it requires individual answers?’ Don’t try this until and unless you are very sure you have something genuinely different to add. It can get you the right attention (trust me on that) but can surely backfire too.
7. Sure-shot NOs
 - Don’t look around while you are talking to someone. I clearly remember this entrepreneur at an AWS event who was talking to me and shaking hand and as soon as he saw a ‘big’ guy (don’t want to name here), he just forgot me and ran away to talk to the other guy. I had my hand out and felt pretty foolish. Somehow I could never respect this guy again, he reminded me of my classmate in college who chased only the rich and famous.
- Don’t speak too much. Many a times we are nervous or we take someone’s interest as a welcome sign to go on. Please, please keep your conversation simple, crisp and to the point. Ask it out. You will be surprised how you might just get it.
-Ask shamelessly. At the most, you will get a no, but please ask. And that brings me to the first point, be clear in what you want, you might just get exactly that.

Students can click a picture of a flower, leaf or tree to get information on what they are looking at, through an educational application called Treefinder.
Better still, they can identify the use of foreign languages and references that they may come across in a book or online platforms, through Curiosity Cat, while StudyBuddy aids learning by recording, narrating and displaying lessons to students.
These are some of the innovative applications Microsoft employees have come up with for students in a week-long ‘Oneweek’ hackathon, held across 114 countries between July 28 and 31, the biggest in the company’s history.
‘Oneweek’ was described by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella as an effort to reinvent the way the company does business and encourage the rise of brilliant ideas regardless of its origins.
“Large-scale hackathons such as these foster an environment where new energy and a brand new direction for the company is encouraged and celebrated,” says Rohit Thakur, head of HR for Microsoft in India.
The hackathons also enable employees to make a real impact on communities and discover how Microsoft is reinventing its productivity offerings and platforms for the mobile-first and cloud-first world, he adds.
This year’s hackathon was open to all employees and interns in engineering and non-engineering divisions, with over 5,000 employees registered worldwide, over 1,100 hacks, representing more than 60 countries.
In India, hackathons were conducted across Bangalore, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune, and over 2,300 employees registered to participate, creating over 750 project ideas.

University-students-1024x691To build the workforce of future, practical solutions are dependent on the effective integration and collaboration of industry and academia. It has become all the more critical to provide a compatible environment to nurture future entrepreneurs
To decode and find solutions to these challenges, TimesJobs.com in association with Apeejay Stya University hosted an ‘Industry-Academia Conclave’ with industry leaders, academicians and HR experts in New Delhi.
The eminent panel included Prashant Bhatnagar, director-hiring & staffing, SapientNitro; Nimish Gupta, global-learning & development head, Tech Mahindra; Amitabh Akhauri, sr vice president-HR, Jindal Stainless Limited; Yuvaraj Srivastava, SVP-HR, MakeMyTrip; Anil Gaur, vice president, HR, Jubilant Life Sciences; Deepika Pillai, human resource director, Xavient Information Systems; Naveen Narayanan, global head-talent management, HCL Technologies and Aditya Berlia, co-founder and pro chancellor, Apeejay Stya University.
The biggest disconnect between the industry and academia is the employability quotient of the students. One of the biggest hindrances in bridging the skills gap is that industry tie-ups are mostly limited to premier institutions highlighted Akhauri of Jindal Stainless limited.
In Bhatnagar of SapientNitro’s view, there has been a change in certain pockets/institutions. Most companies still have to struggle to get the right talent. To get the piece right, academic institutes have to come to terms with the global change and focus on what they impart and how they impart.
If students are not employable, how is the industry managing their talent pipeline? To this end, Narayanan answered that companies have found their way to fill the talent gap, may be through expensive ways. Companies will survive and grow. “I believe we went the wrong way while fighting, debating and tweaking the curriculum. The main challenge is that students lack learnability skills and application of knowledge at the right time in the real world.”
Embracing new learning models
According to Gupta of TechMahindra, the academia perspective has to change. “In fact, we should adopt new international methods such as the German model where students are allowed to work first and then go back to college to get the degree.”
Adding to this, Pillai of Xavient stated that the teaching pattern has a lot to do with the student’s getting the right knowledge and exposure. “It has to be a combination of industry experts and teachers to bring the best of both worlds to the students.”
Another major problem is that most academic institutions have many courses running simultaneously. Academia needs to focus and prioritise, explained Gaur of Jubilant Life Sciences. “Skills such as learning agility and passion should be considered while taking students.”
Srivastava of MakeMyTrip said it is critical for students to spend the last eight months in the institute for a final cut out for the industry instead of doing internships. Industry will anyways train students as per their specific requirements.
The Academia Perspective
Representing the academia on the panel Berlia of Apeejay Stya University mentioned that the foremost task for the industry is to connect/reach out to parents, since, they decide which course their child will take, may be out of peer pressure or for other reasons. “The industry word has more credibility. If an industry leader says, we will be hiring so many people in a particular technology/domain there is no way that parents will not encourage children to take up that particular course.”
The panel highlighted that the relationship between the industry and the academia has to be mutual and on-going. To enhance the employability quotient, students should be admitted to college basis their attitude, learning agility and interest level, not just their academic performance. Skills such as entrepreneurship and innovation are not driven by a student’s academic performance or a professional degree. Together, the industry and academia have to take more responsibility to lay a strong foundation for students in their formative years. By helping students make the right course choices and mentoring them for a smooth transition from the classroom to the boardroom. The exciting discussion opened many threads for both the industry and academia to work together to create an employable future workforce.
