3D printing repairs accident victim's face

3D printing repairs accident victim's face3d-printer-face_operation_before_after_bbc.jpg

In a path-breaking surgery, a team of doctors have reshaped an accident victim's face using 3D technology to print custom implants for him in Wales.
The surgery was performed on Stephen Power at Morriston Hospital in Swansea.
Power met with an accident in 2012 and the emergency surgery that followed could not restore his face.
The recent eight-hour operation at Morriston Hospital was the culmination of months of 3D planning and printing that has pushed the boundaries of what surgeons can achieve, a statement from the hospital said.
The team used scanned 3D images of Power's face to design guides to cut and position the bones, as well as plates to hold the bones in place.
3d_printer_used_skull_operation_bbc.jpg
All the models - along with the finished guides and medical-grade titanium implants - were produced by 3D printing.
"Stephen had a very complex injury and correcting it involved bones having to be re-cut into several fragments," said Adrian Sugar, consultant maxillofacial surgeon at Morriston Hospital.
"It made sense to plan it in three dimensions and that is why 3D printing came in - and successive 3D printing, as at every different stage we had a model," Sugar said.
For the surgery, the doctors did two types of model planning - virtual model planning on a computer screen and physical model planning.
"Also we produced guides at each stage of the surgical process, not only to cut the bone but to reposition the bones, and then we had custom implants 3D printed," Sugar said.
Before the operation, Stephen had been self-conscious about his appearance. He continued to wear glasses despite his improving vision, to disguise his cheek and eye.
"From this operation I can't really explain how well it has gone. It has just made me look a lot better. I take my hat off to them," Power, who used to wear glasses to disguise his disfigured cheek and eye, said of the doctors who worked their magic on him.

Samsung Galaxy S5 premium variant rumours rubbished

Samsung Galaxy S5 premium variant rumours rubbishedSAMSUNG-mobile_logo.jpg

Samsung officials have discarded rumours revolving around a premium variant of the flagship smartphone Samsung Galaxy S5. Previous rumours have pointed to a 'F series' Galaxy S5 that flaunts a metallic design while packing in some top of the line specs under the hood .
The news comes from none other than Samsung CEO J.K Shin who states "there is no such thing," in an interview with Kbench website (via Phonearena), when asked about the premium device.
While Shin, to some extent, disappointed Samsung fans, he also compensated by confirming a new Galaxy Note flagship phablet is of course coming for later this year. However, the Samsung CEO refrained from giving out any other details of the handset.
While Galaxy S5's F series premium variant may have turned out to be a hoax, the existing Galaxy S5smartphone might soon receive a Galaxy S5 Zoom variant. A device codenamed Samsung SM-C115 was spotted under benchmark tests on Friday (http://gadgets.ndtv.com/mobiles/news/samsung-galaxy-s5-zoom-allegedly-spotted-in-benchmark-listing-with-full-specs-495853), which is assumed to be the Galaxy S5 Zoom.
The listed specifications for the alleged Galaxy S5 Zoom (SM-C115) suggest that the device will run Android (http://gadgets.ndtv.com/tags/android) 4.4.2 KitKat. The SM-C115 device is listed to feature a 4.8-inch display with an HD (720x1280 pixel) resolution. It packs in a 1.3GHz hexa-core (Samsung Exynos 5 Hexa) CPU and a Mali-T624 GPU.
The alleged successor to Galaxy S4 Zoom (rumoured S5 Zoom) will come with 2GB of RAM to support the processor. Also, the rear camera listed is a 19-megapixel camera (making 5184 x 3888 pixel images), and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera that is capable of 1080p video recording.
On the storage front, the Samsung SM-C115 (rumoured S5 Zoom) device is listed with two reported storage capacities, which likely means that a dedicated memory card slot will be present too.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Slim with quad-core CPU listed on company's site

Samsung Galaxy S3 Slim with quad-core CPU listed on company's sitesamsung_galaxy_s3_slim_official.jpg

Samsung has quietly listed its latest Galaxy S3 Slim smartphone on its Brazil site without pricing and availability details.
As of now, there is no word whether the Samsung Galaxy S3 Slim will be available in other countries or not.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 Slim seems to be a 'lite' variant of the company's 2012 flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III. However, it's worth pointing out that the specifications of the Galaxy S3 Slim are much more basic than the former flagship.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 Slim smartphone runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box, with no word on a further OS update. The smartphone features a 4.5-inch TFT display with a (qHD) 540x960 pixel resolution. A 1.2GHz quad-core processor (unspecified chipset) powers the device, with 1GB of RAM.
The smartphone sports a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, while there is a 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera. The Galaxy S3 Slim handset comes with 8GB in-built storage that can be expanded via microSD card (up to 32GB).
The Galaxy S3 Slim supports Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, Micro-USB, AGPS and 3G connectivity options. It is powered by a 2100mAh battery and supports a micro-SIM card, instead of the regular SIM size.
Samsung, continuing its tradition of launching its flagship smartphones in a number of variants, had recently introduced the Galaxy S III mini Value Edition, which is a compact variant of the Galaxy S III.
The Galaxy S III mini Value Edition runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box, whereas the Galaxy S III mini was based on Android 4.1. The Galaxy S III mini Value Edition, much like its sibling, comes with a 4-inch display with a resolution of 480x800 (WVGA) pixels. It is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex A9 (unspecified chipset) processor, alongside 1GB of RAM.
The smartphone sports a 5-megapixel rear camera and also houses a VGA front-facing camera. The Galaxy S III mini Value Edition includes 8GB of built-in storage, which can be expanded up to 32GB via microSD card.

iOS 7.1 users reporting faster battery drain

iOS 7.1 users reporting faster battery drainios_7.1_screeshot.jpg

Just a few days after the release of the much anticipated iOS 7.1 update, reports of devices discharging their batteries significantly faster than before have been coming in from users. Notably, Apple had since November last year issued a total of five iOS 7.1 betas for developers, before finally releasing the update on 10 March 2014.
While according to reports the iOS 7.1 update has indeed resolved most of the problems with iOS 7.0 (and brought Touch ID improvements, Siri improvements, UI tweaks, amongst other features), iOS 7.1 also seems to have bought along its own battery-gate bug.
Apple fan-site, 9to5mac.com reports that users discussing the new upgrade on Apple forums and on Twitter have been complaining about the battery drainage issue. It further goes on to state that running a clean install of the iOS through iTunes could help to solve this issue.
The iOS 7.1 update, even though not a major one, has been anticipated for months. It has introduced a small but significant change that works towards making iOS devices feel as though speeds have improved. Not so much on the iPhone 5 and later variants, but users of the iPhone 4 and 4S had reported devices becoming slow once they had upgraded them to iOS 7.0. Even that problem seems to have been mitigated by the iOS 7.1 update.
Coming to the battery drain issue, a detailed report by Ars Technica detailed the results of a battery life test on iOS devices running iOS version 7.0.6 and version 7.1. The comparisons showed that almost all the devices had a drop in battery percentages once they had been upgraded to iOS 7.1. The only device to outperform its predecessor was the iPod Touch (fifth generation), that clocked a battery life of 383 minutes on iOS 7.1 against 370 minutes on iOS 7.0.6. The iPad mini with Retina display clocked 632 minutes with iOS 7.1, equalling its figures for iOS 7.0.6.
ios_7.1_ars_technica.jpg
The vast majority of users however have not reported any significant losses or gains as far as the battery life is concerned. The problem certainly doesn't seem as major as the battery-gate issue that plagued the iPhone 4S launch from 2011.
The iOS 8 is expected to be teased at Apple's WWDC event later this year, and launched soon after.Reports suggest that it will come with Preview and TextEdit apps and iCloud integration.

iPhone 6 tipped with 389ppi 'Ultra-Retina' display, 5.59mm thickness

iPhone 6 tipped with 389ppi 'Ultra-Retina' display, 5.59mm thicknessapple-staff-635.jpg

New rumours have surfaced online for Apple's upcoming iteration of the iPhone handset. The rumours hint the iPhone 6 will arrive with a much thinner body, powerful processor and a higher pixel density screen.
The rumours come from Sonny Dickson, the Australian teen who rose to fame in the build up to the release of iPhone 5s with what turned out to be largely accurate leaks. Dickson, in one of his four tweets on the subject, said, "iPhone 6 will be 0.22 inches thick #JustSaying." The measurement barely comes around to 5.59mm, which is just 0.04mm thicker than what is claimed to be the world's slimmest handset, the Gionee Elife S5.5.
Dickson also mentioned the inclusion of an Ultra-Retina screen, which will pack 389 pixels per inch (ppi). The tipster furthermore talked about the chipset that might arrive in the next Apple iPhone. "The new Apple A8 processor will run at 2.6GHz #JustSaying," his tweet read.
Dickson finally tweeted "These specs could be the real thing #JustSaying." One can only wait for the device to launch officially to know what Apple has in stock for its fans.
Based on the previous leaks, it has been indicated that the iPhone 6 might sport a bezel-less display. In addition, another report claimed that the iPhone 6 will pack a larger 8-megapixel camera sensor, and will sport an aperture size of f/2.0, as compared to the iPhone 5's f/2.4 and iPhone 5s' f/2.2.
Further, the alleged iPhone 6 will sport OIS (optical image stabilisation) and a CMOS sensor manufactured by Sony, reports have indicated.

Microsoft releases OneNote for Mac, makes it free on all platforms

Microsoft releases OneNote for Mac, makes it free on all platformsone_note_released_mac_free_windows_cloud_blog.jpg

Microsoft has launched its OneNote note-taking application for the Mac platform, while at the same time bringing making it free for the Windows platform. OneNote for Mac and Windows is available in a 'freemium' model, with some additional paid features available to 'premium' users. The company has also introduced a new cloud API to enable developers to connect their apps to it.
The OneNote application was earlier available for PC, Windows tablets, Windows Phone, iPad, iPhone, Android, and the Web (formerly known as OneNote web app), and has now been introduced on Mac for the first time. The OneNote for Mac app will like the rest, sync automatically with Microsoft'sOneDrive cloud-storage service, keeping notes in sync across all platforms.
OneNote for Mac is available to download for free from the Mac App Store on iTunes.
The OneNote application was, however, available for Windows as a paid-version before. The new free version of the application misses on some of the features that are seen in its paid-version like SharePoint support, version history, Outlook account integration and more (all of which are available to 'premium' Office 365 and Office 2013 users), as per The official Microsoft Office Blog. The free OneNote app version is also ad-free, not a limited-time trial version and is made for home and school related uses only.
Additionally, Microsoft has released the OneNote cloud service API for third-party app makers to integrate the service with the app. The cloud service comes with few features such as OneNote Clipper, through which users can save web pages on OneNote; me@note.com email for sending certain notes to the app as mails; and Office Lens, which is Microsoft's optical-character-recognition-technology, used for capturing documents and saving them in OneNote.
Other key features include sending news articles to OneNote via other news apps like Weave, News 360 and Feedly; scanning of physical notebooks into the app via Mod Notebooks; Writing notes with pen and paper and sending them to OneNote via Livescribe and more.

Details and images of Apple's rumoured Healthbook iOS app emerge

Details and images of Apple's rumoured Healthbook iOS app emergeApple_healthbook_leak_9to5mac.jpg

Apple is purportedly readying to ship a new fitness-oriented app called Healthbook with iOS 8. News website 9to5mac has published a detailed report of the app's proposed features, as well as composite images of the interface recreated from actual screenshots.
According to 9to5mac, which has recently reported on several iOS 8-related developments, the app could be a one-stop resource for tracking personal health as well as fitness, nutrition, sleep and exercise. The app is described as visually similar to Passbook, with a stack of colour-coded cards, each representing a different function.
Images published by the site depict cards for Bloodwork, Heart Rate, Hydration, Blood Pressure, Activity, Nutrition, Blood Sugar, Sleep, Respiratory Rate, Oxygen Saturation and Weight, along with an "Emergency Card", which presumably lists emergency contact information and instructions for first responders.
Apple_healthbook_activity_9to5mac.jpg
It is unclear how Apple intends to gather data for many of these functions, especially blood sugar and respiratory rate. iPhones can already measure activity and detect motion, but current models lack dedicated sensors for health-related parameters. Users can manually enter nutrition and weight information, but it is unclear whether there is any motivation to do so or any method of automating entry.
9to5mac suggests that Apple's long-rumoured wearable device would tie in to Healthbook and provide data, or that third-party devices will be allowed to tie in. This might be the case for heart rate, blood pressure and sleep monitoring, but would still not cover all bases.
In order to be useful, the Emergency Card would have to be visible even when a phone is locked with a passcode. Presumably, it would contain information about a person's specific conditions, current medication, and other instructions that would help bystanders and medical professionals in case of incapacitation. Reconstructed screenshots show sections for blood type, organ donation, and identification information such as weight and eye colour.
Apple_healthbook_emergency_9to5mac.jpg
There is no current standard to help anyone identify the owner of a locked smartphone, or his or her next of kin, in case of an emergency. Healthbook's Emergency Card could thus become one of the most useful features of iOS.
It is not known whether Healthbook will indeed launch with iOS 8, and what hardware capabilities it will require. It is possible that Healthbook will run with reduced functionality on older iOS devices. Previously leaked purported iOS 8 apps and features include an overhauled maps app, deeper iCloud integration across OS X and iOS platforms, new Preview and TextEdit apps, and a standalone iTunes Radio app.

Microsoft Office for iPad may be unveiled by Nadella on March 27: Report

Microsoft Office for iPad may be unveiled by Nadella on March 27: Reportsatya_nadella_microsoft_3_official_website.jpg

Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella may unveil an iPad version of the company's Office software suite on March 27, a source familiar with the event told Reuters, and use his first big press appearance to launch the company's most profitable product in a version compatible with Apple Inc's popular tablet.

Nadella, who replaced longtime CEO Steve Ballmer earlier this year, will address the media and industry executives in San Francisco on March 27.

Investors for years have urged Microsoft to adapt Office for mobile devices from Apple and Google Inc, rather than shackling it to Windows as PC sales decline. But the Redmond, Washington-based software giant has been reluctant to undermine its other lucrative franchise, its PC operating software.

Microsoft gives up some $2.5 billion a year in revenue by keeping Office off the iPad, which has now sold almost 200 million units, analysts estimate.

Tech blog Re/code first reported news of Nadella's event. Microsoft said in an invitation to reporters that Nadella will discuss "news related to the intersection of cloud and mobile" but declined to comment on the specifics of the CEO's appearance.

Microsoft has had iPad and iPhone versions of Office primed for several months now, sources told Reuters, but the company has dallied on their release due to internal divisions, among other things.

Although Nadella is expected to discuss his thinking in depth next week, the company has already signaled that it will adopt a more liberal attitude toward putting its software on different platforms.

Microsoft said earlier on Monday that it would make OneNote, its note-taking software, available on Mac, a move interpreted by observers as a shot against Evernote, the popular note-taking application that has both Mac and Android compatibility.

Aside from Evernote, Microsoft also faces budding challenges from startups that have released mobile-friendly alternatives to Word, Excel and Powerpoint

Apple finally dumps the iPad 2, brings back fourth-generation iPad

Apple finally dumps the iPad 2, brings back fourth-generation iPadiPad_2_ndtv.jpg

Apple has finally dropped the iPad 2 from its lineup of tablets. The second-generation iPad was entry-level 'full-size' offering from Apple until Monday, over three years after the tablet was unveiled. Apple has brought back the fourth-generation iPad with Retina display as the new entry-level 'full-size' tablet at $399 (approximately Rs. 24,000) for the Wi-Fi only tablet, with the variant with cellular connectivity priced at $529 (approximately Rs. 32,000). As with the iPad 2, the fourth-generation iPad with be available only in 16GB storage option.
With the move, Apple has dropped the only tablet that still featured the old 30-pin connector, as thefourth-generation iPad comes with a Lightning connector. Apple still sells the iPhone 4s and iPhone 4(in some markets) that feature the 30-pin connector, so its shift to the new connector is not complete in that respect.
Apple has dropped the iPad 2 from its lineup in India as well, though not yet revealed the price of the fourth-generation iPad in India (listed as iPad with Retina display on the Apple India site).
iPad_lineup_india.png
Till Monday, the 16GB iPad 2 was selling for Rs. 28,900 and Rs. 37,900 for the Wi-Fi and cellular models respectively, and we expect the fourth-generation iPad to take over the same price tag.
Apple also introduced the 8GB iPhone 5c model on Tuesday, in a bid to boost sales of the colourful iPhone. There's no word yet on when the phone will come to India or its expected pricing.

iPhone 5c 8GB not headed to India just yet

iPhone 5c 8GB not headed to India just yetApple_iPhone_5c_apple.jpg

Apple has apparently confirmed to the press that the newly launched 8GB variant of the iPhone 5c will only be sold in the UK, France, Germany, Australia and China. As per a tweet published by Fortune.com staffer Philip Elmer-DeWitt, Apple will only sell the new device in those five territories. It is unclear if Apple was referring to countries it will be sold in at launch, or over the course of its life.

Elmer-DeWitt is editor of Fortune.com's Apple 2.0 section, and has been covering the company for various publications since 1982.

The statement is surprising, since lower priced products are typically targeted at emerging markets. The iPhone 5c was widely considered to be a vehicle for Apple to make inroads into markets where the iPhone 5s would be too expensive and the iPhone 5 would feel dated. There appears to be no correlation between the five named countries or the operators offering the new 8GB iPhone 5c on subsidised plans.

Apple continues to offer the iPhone 4s alongside the 5c and 5s in these countries. In terms of price, the new 8GB iPhone 5c slots in halfway between the 4s and 16GB 5c.

Apple recently restocked an 8GB version of the four-year-old iPhone 4 in India, in order to reach a lower price point. Apple seems to be pursuing different product mix strategies across territories rather than a unified global lineup.

Microsoft has finally announced the next-phase of roll-out for its latest-generation home console, the Xbox One. Starting September 2014, 26 new markets will get retail availability of the Xbox One console, including India. For now, pricing details and exact launch dates have not been disclosed.

Making the announcement via a post on the official Xbox blog on Tuesday, Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi said, "It's time to ensure even more fans around the world can enjoy Xbox One. So today we're proud to share that it will be available in 26 additional markets in September this year. We'll have much more to share at a local level towards the end of April, so stay tuned."

Notably Microsoft's primary competitor in the home console space, Sony, launched its PlayStation 4console in India in January (at Rs. 39,990), less than two months after its US launch. To puts things in perspective, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 were launched in November within a week of each other in the US.

Shortly after its US launch however, the Sony PlayStation 4 was rolled out to roughly 53 countries in the first phase. In comparison, Microsoft's Xbox One was in its first phase only rolled out to 13 countries.

Full list of 26 new countries in September phase of Xbox One global roll-out: Argentina, Belgium, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, India, Israel, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia , Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and UAE.

While India launch pricing of the Xbox One has not been revealed, it's safe to say it will be slightly more expensive in India than the PlayStation 4 as Sony's console cost $100 less at its US launch.

Both the Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 sport an integrated CPU-GPU design by AMD, featuring an 8-core low power x86-64 AMD "Jaguar" CPU. The Xbox One's CPU cores are clocked at 1.75GHz, compared to the Sony PlayStation 4's 1.6GHz.

While this difference in clock speed is relatively insignificant, the implementation of the GPUs seem certain to create some differences in performance. The Xbox One features a GPU similar to the entry-level Bonaire GPU found on the Radeon HD 7790, while the PlayStation 4 features a GPU similar to the mid-range Pitcairn GPU found on the Radeon HD 7870. While the GPU clock speed is higher on the Xbox One, the difference in GPU processing performance should be tangible.

Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 feature 8GB of RAM, though while Sony has opted for the much faster 5500MHz GDDR5 RAM on its console, Microsoft has gone in for 2133MHz DDR3 RAM on the Xbox One, giving the Japanese manufacturer another advantage that may not be offset by the Xbox One's implementation of ESRAM (all 32MB of it) for caching purposes.

Just like the PS4, the Xbox One also sports a 500GB hard disk drive, a Blu-ray disc and DVD drive, USB 3.0, AUX port, Ethernet, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 (EDR), an HDMI out port, and an optical-out port.
