Apple set to report record sales

Apple set to report record sales

Apple set to report record sales
Apple Inc may notch its most successful holiday shopping season yet when it reports quarterly results on Monday, setting records for sales of its gift-friendly iPhones and iPads.

Apple Inc may notch its most successful holiday shopping season yet when it reports quarterly results on Monday, setting records for sales of its gift-friendly iPhones and iPads.
It will, however, continue to draw investor scrutiny over sales in ultra-competitive China, its No. 2 market but a drag on revenue and margins in recent quarters. The iPhone maker has been ceding ground to Samsung Electronics and other rivals there, but has now sealed a long-awaited deal to sell iPhones through China Mobile that could bear fruit in 2014.
Apple, which once routinely blew away Wall Street's most bullish expectations, needs a superb quarter to galvanize the stock. Its shares are down about 3% this year.
Activist investor Carl Icahn, arguing that at 13 times forward earnings the stock is undervalued, is building up his stake and demanding the Cupertino, California, company share more of its $146 billion cash hoard.
Longer term, investors want to see what new gadgets Apple can pull out of its hat, a central issue about which chief executive Tim Cook has been cagey. Speculation revolves around a smartwatch, a larger-screened iPhone -- a nod to Samsung's hugely successful "phablets" -- and persistent talk of a TV product.
"Beyond fiscal 2014, it is not a slam dunk that Apple's net income will be higher in three to five years," said Bernstein Research's Toni Sacconaghi. "Without new product categories, we see Apple's end markets as increasingly mature and competitive, which could pressure or limit revenue growth and gross margins."
Samsung, reflecting how intensifying global competition is eroding smartphone profits and margins after years of explosive growth, reported its first quarterly profit decline in two years.
Sales-wise, Apple's current line-up is still expected to enjoy a strong following despite stiff competition from Samsung and Amazon.com Inc's Kindle Fire.
Wall Street analysts are expecting Apple to report sales of around 55 million iPhones and 26 million iPads, up from 48 million and 23 million respectively in the year-ago quarter.
Of that iPhone estimate, analysts expect good sales of the 5S due to pent up demand and limited supply around launch time, but remain less sanguine about a 5C that has so far failed to excite the cost-conscious consumers it targets.
A China question
In the options market, traders were bracing for a move of about 5% to 6% in Apple's shares after its announcement. The sentiment was more bullish than bearish with call volume outpacing put contracts: of 1.87 million contracts of open interest in options, 1.17 million were calls and 706,000 puts.
Apple's stock is up 21.7% over the past 12 months, just ahead of a 20.4% rise in the Standard & Poor's 500. Still, that has disappointed some investors after the shares increased five-fold in the last five years.
In a lengthy letter to shareholders, Icahn urged shareholders to approve his proposal for a new $50 billion share buyback, arguing the company did not need so much cash on hand and that the stock was undervalued relative to the S&P 500.
Apple, which launched a massive share buyback last year, has urged shareholders to reject Icahn's proposal, arguing that it needs sufficient reserves to tackle increasing competition in a fast-evolving mobile industry.
More fundamentally, investors worry about Apple's performance in China, the world's largest cellular market. Analysts say the high-end iPhone is struggling to make headway against cheaper local offerings from Huawei and Xiaomi, while Samsung continues to dominate the market.
Apple has been under siege from a growing coterie of Asian phonemakers over the past year. It ended the third quarter as the No. 2 player with 12.1% of the global smartphone market, but down from 14.3% a year ago and less than half of Samsung's 32.1% currently. Lenovo, LG Electronics and Huawei all made gains, each holding about a 5% market share at present, according to Gartner data.
The picture is drastically different in China, where Samsung commanded a 21% share in the third quarter of 2013, with Apple trailing in fifth place with 6%, according to research firm Canalys.
But some analysts say the addition of China Mobile's vast nationwide network to the iPhone's stable could drive sales of four to five million iPhones in the March quarter.
"Inventory build and magnitude of China Mobile iPhone sales are a big X-factor for the March quarter," Sacconaghi wrote on Friday

The new Gmail on phones is a major change from the earlier app and users will have to learn a few new tricks to deal with as efficiently as they dealt with the old Gmail.
WASHINGTON: Google has reportedly fixed a bug with its Gmail service that sent a user thousands of unwanted e-mails.

The bug allowed auto-fill of e-mail address in Gmail when accessed from the Google Search results page and affected the Hotmail account of David S Peck.

According to CNET, it was discovered that Google filled in another person's e-mail address in a new Gmail message whenever anybody signed into a Google account and clicked on the top Gmail sub-link in Google search results for Gmail.

Unfortunately, the receiver of the unsolicited e-mails was Peck, whose Hotmail address had been auto-filled.

A Google spokesperson cited a 'technical glitch' on e-mail addresses that were already revealed on public web pages appearing 'too prominently' in search results, adding that the bug had been fixed.

On Friday, the site experience major outage of its Gmail and Google+ service due to a temporary error at the same time when members of its reliability team sat down to answer questions on Reddit's AMA session.

Intel to take decision on new chip plant in 2014
Intel expects to make a decision this year on the location of a new multi-billion dollar semiconductor plant.

TEL AVIV: US chip manufacturer Intelexpects to make a decision this year on the location of a new multi-billion dollar semiconductor plant using new 10 nanometer technology, executives at its Israeli unit said.

Israel is one of a number of countries competing to host the new plant.

"Intel will take its decision as late as possible. Until it needs to, it won't make a decision," Maxine Fassberg, general manager of Intel Israel, told a news conference. "If we're looking at the next technology it has to come this year, but we don't know when."

Intel has already held talks with the Israeli government, which must offer incentives to be competitive, said Fassberg, manager of Intel's Fab 28 plant in the southern town of Kiryat Gat.

"There is no certainty it will be in Israel. The jury is still out; we are in the game," said Mooly Eden, president of Intel Israel and general manager of perceptual computing.

Intel Israel's exports amounted to $3.8 billion in 2013, down from $4.6 billion the year before. Eden said the 2012 number was inflated by inventory carried over from 2011 as the plant upgraded to improved technology.

"Overall I believe we have a healthy growth," Eden said.

In its 40 years in Israel, Intel has invested $10.8 billion in plants and development centers and received $1.5 billion in grants. It employs nearly 10,000 people.

It received grants totaling 28% of its investment when it built Fab 18, which started operating in Israel in 1999. This amount fell to 15% for Fab 28 in 2008, and when it upgraded Fab 28, the grant amounted to only 7%, she said.

"Together with the Israeli government we will do what needs to be done to stay competitive," Fassberg said

G services: How Vodafone plan to take on Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio

G services: How Vodafone plan to take on Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio

4G services: How Vodafone plan to take on Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio
Vodafone India is drawing up strategies to take on Mukesh Ambani headed Reliance Jio Infocomm and current market leader Bharti Airtel.

MUMBAI: Vodafone India is drawing up strategies to take on Mukesh Ambani headed Reliance Jio Infocomm and current market leader Bharti Airtel, hoping to use spectrum garnered from the upcoming sale to deepen network coverage as well as deploy future technologies.

UK-based Vodafone Group Plc's India unit expects intense competition for spectrum in the 900 Mhz band in the important Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata circles where its licences are ending later this year, Vishant Vora, company's technology director, told ET.

While the more efficient 900MHz bandwidth is particularly suited for indoor coverage - increasing its attractiveness for operators - India's No. 2 operator will also be interested in the 1800 MHz bandwidth which can later be used to offer fourth generation (4G) telecom services. Both Jio and Bharti have bandwidth in the 2300 Mhz to offer 4G services, but Vodafone doesn't. So far, Jio hasn't started its 4G services - which allows downloads almost 10 times faster than 3G, while Bharti Airtel offers it in a few cities.

Hefty earnest money deposits for auctions starting February 3 by Vodafone India, Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Idea Cellular indicate that all four could be part of a major slugfest in Delhi and Mumbai circles in the 900 Mhz band, say analysts. Some key circles in 1800 Mhz band could also see keen fights for airwaves.

Vodafone holds 900 Mhz airwaves in the lucrative circles of Mumbai and Delhi, apart from Kolkata. Bharti Airtel holds this bandwidth in Delhi and Kolkata. Licences in all three circles are expiring in November this year, making the upcoming auctions critical for both Vodafone and Bharti Airtel to continue uninterrupted services.

Meanwhile, Vodafone's interest in airwaves in the 1800 MHz, unsuitable for 3G data, also stems from the fact that there is ample growth in 2G data and voice networks need decongestion, said Vora.

Still, unlike some other operators, Vodafone does not believe its bidding in the auction is contingent to getting continuous spectrum, though it would like for it to be in consecutive frequencies.

Around half of the spectrum being put up to sale in February is non-contiguous, and the department does not expect operators to withdraw bids or rejig airwave blocks to award continuous spectrum. As such, it depends on the operators' luck.

"Frequency planning for a network with fragmented airwaves is much harder. There is also wastage and higher chance of interference," Vora said. Inter-operator interference reduces calling experience significantly.

Moreover, Vora said having more airwaves will only partially offset the recent urban trend of banning telecom towers in areas. More bandwidth even in the 900 MHz band will not compensate for a missing site, where coverage will most likely be lost.

The company is in the process of converting its entire network to carry all voice calls on an internet platform. The project that will last at least two-three years brings Vodafone close to offering all services over internet, similar to what was proposed by Reliance Jio.

The conversion to internet protocol for even the voice network is economical, because in it rather than dedicating a line to a conversation, the network can eliminate time spent on call without conversation.

"People do not talk all the time. Typically, one person talks a third of the time, the other person a third, and there is silence for the remaining third," Vora said.

Over 30% of the Vodafone India's capital expenditure is being spent on the transport network, much of which is on converting to internet protocol, he said. While the company does not disclose capital expenditure in India, industry estimates suggest Vodafone spends Rs 5,500-6,000 crore each year.

"It will simplify running, improve our cost, improve operations and maintenance and add flexibility to the network. Of course costs are prohibitive, but over a period of time we expect most operators in India will follow this," Vora said. "Everyone's network is struggling to cope with data... Everybody will do that down that road."

Vodafone India is also working on convergence between its technology platforms and the network management itself. The move will enable Vodafone to offer an application through which customers will be able to customize plans on the fly

Google said it had agreed to acquire privately held artificial intelligence company DeepMind Technologies.

Technology news website Re/code, which reported news of the deal earlier, said the price was $400 million, without disclosing where it got the information.

Google spokesman declined to comment on the price. DeepMind representatives could not be immediately reached for comment.

Founded in London in 2012 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman, DeepMind uses general-purpose learning algorithms for applications such as simulations, e-commerce and games, according to its website.

Google, which is working on projects including self-driving cars and robots, has become increasingly focused on artificial intelligence in recent years.

In 2012, it hired Ray Kurzweil, considered one of the leading minds in the field, and in May it announced a partnership with NASA and several universities to launch the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab.

Xolo Q3000 review: The big, big phone

Xolo Q3000 review: The big, big phone

Xolo Q3000 review: The big, big phone
Big screen phones are all the rage in India. Micromax has tasted success due to its phablets, and so have Samsung and Karbonn. Xolo, the premium brand floated by Lava, has also been in this segment for quite some time, but its success has not been as widespread as the top three of the Indian market.

Lava's latest phablet - Xolo, Q3000 - may change things. It has the same screen size as the Galaxy Note 3, competent hardware and an overall package that makes it look like a great option at Rs 20,000.

However, looks can be deceptive... so we checked out the new Xolo Q3000 to decide whether it is a phablet worth buying. Here is our review...

The big screen
The key selling point of Xolo Q3000 is its big 5.7-inch screen, with full HD (1920x1080p) resolution. We found the screen to be pretty good in terms of quality, with a fast and responsive touch experience and decent colour contrast. However, the brightness level is not sufficient and you may find yourself squinting under direct sunlight on a bright day, even with brightness conked to the maximum.

A huge, huge body
With a big screen comes a huge body. Xolo Q3000 is marred by its bulky profile; the size of the device makes it nearly unwieldy and you will struggle while using it with one hand. We realize that phablets are supposed to be big, but none we have encountered so far, maybe except Lumia 1520, are as big as this one.

However, despite the considerable size, Xolo has managed to keep the device quite thin and relatively light. At 8.9mm, the Q3000 is quite thin and is quite close to Galaxy Note 3's thickness of 8.3mm. And even though it weighs a little over 200gram, the weight is evenly distributed such that you will never feel it is too heavy to hold.

Vulnerable to slipping from the hands
When we looked at the Xolo Q3000, we were quite pleased; but all that changed as soon as we held it. Being 3.2-inch wide, the model is obviously not easy to hold and Xolo has made things worse by strapping onto it a slippery back panel.

The rear panel of Q3000 is made of soft plastic material, similar to the one used in Nexus 5 smartphone and the new Nexus 7 tablet. While the back panel looks great and feels good to the touch, it is deathwish if you want to use the model without a grip cover. There were too many times when we nearly dropped the phablet due to its big size and poor grip of the back panel.

In terms of build quality, the handset is decent and Lava has used quality materials that give it a premium look. It is only on the backside that the handset looks a little cheap, where the camera, LED flash, noise cancellation mic and speakers have been placed in portion that is coated with glossy plastic. Below is a photo of the rather ugly portion:

Performance
Xolo Q3000 is powered by the combo of Android 4.2 and a quad-core Mediatek processor (MT6589T), the same as Micromax Canvas Turbo. The phablet operates quite well and with a launcher app from Play Store, things became butter smooth. Not once did the handset hang during regular usage, and it was only while playing some resource-hungry games like Asphalt 8 that we observed a lag.

Though there is no proprietary skin over the default Android software, there are a few preloaded apps by the company. One is Xolo Care, which provides one-click access to the company's executives via phone, email or SMS. We tried the app and found that Xolo's executives were more than helpful and provided as much assistance as possible. A thumbs-up for this effort, especially since the service quality of Indian manufacturers is always considered their weak point. The two other apps offer security and battery saving features.

With 2GB RAM, we faced no issues with running any app on the phablet though high-end games proved a little too much for the processor, as mentioned above. The internal storage is 16GB, wherein you get 12.7GB for your data and 0.99GB is reserved for apps; you can use a 32GB microSD card to expand storage.

Camera
Xolo Q3000 sports a 13MP camera on the back and a 5MP camera in front, which have become the standard in such mid-range models. The camera quality is acceptable, similar to that of the major rivals. The photos we clicked showed decent colour contrast, but a little softness along the edges. Images taken in outdoors seem a little overexposed sometimes and lack detail.

However, if your photography skills are limited to social media uploads, then Xolo Q3000 will do just fine.

Battery
If battery life is one of your big concerns while buying a smartphone or phablet, then the Xolo Q3000 is the perfect option for you. It packs a 4,000mAh battery, a feature that few other models can boast of.

During moderate day-to-day usage, the battery lasted two days on a single charge. Two days! With this handset in your pocket, you will not have to worry about carrying a charger with you wherever you go. Even when we upped the ante and focussed a little more on gaming and video playback, with 3G on at all times, we easily got battery life of over 26 hours.

Rivals
The Q3000 is in a very competitive segment of the Indian market, facing rivals like Micromax Canvas Turbo, Samsung Galaxy Grand and Lenovo P780.

Micromax Canvas Turbo has the same hardware specifications as the Xolo model, but a smaller screen that makes it easier to hold. The build quality is also a little better; however, the battery life of the Q3000 is miles ahead. Choosing between the two is subjective, depending upon which of the above-mentioned features are more important to you.

Samsung Galaxy Grand is a little dated and does not have comparable specifications, but is still in consideration due to its after sales support and likely software upgrades. However, in terms of pure hardware, Xolo beats the Samsung phablet hands down.

Lenovo P780 comes closest to Xolo Q3000 when it comes to battery life, both offering 4,000mAh capacity. However, the Lenovo phone has relatively low display resolution (720p), screen size (5-inch), camera (8MP) and RAM (1GB), giving the new Xolo phone a definite edge.

Verdict
We are pretty impressed by the Xolo Q3000, even though the possibility of an upgrade to Android 4.3 or 4.4 anytime soon is pretty bleak. A decent processor, quality display, excellent battery life and decent camera are its strong areas, while a rather unwieldy body is a huge chink in its armour.

Nevertheless, the Lava Q3000 gets a thumbs-up from our side and is recommended for anyone who wants a big-screen smartphone under Rs 20,000.

The rumoured model, to be called Lumia 1520 mini or Lumia 1520v, has been leaked by two Chinese websites. The image posted on Weibo.com shows the handset placed alongside an iPhone, while the one published by WPBar.cn sizes it up against the full-sized Lumia 1520. As per the two images, the model will look the same as its bigger sibling albeit the smaller size.

Lumia 1520 mini is said to have a 4.45-inch display with 1280x768p resolution and 335pi pixel density. Other leaked specifications of the model include a 14MP camera and 2,370mAh battery. The upcoming smartphone is expected to replace the Lumai 925 from Nokia's lineup.

It is expected that the model will hit the stores in April this year, sparking rumours that Nokia will unveil it at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The company has scheduled a press event for February 24, the first day of the tech industry expo.

Samsung has unveiled smaller versions of its top models since 2012, such as Galaxy S III and S4. It is also rumoured to be working on a smaller version of the Galaxy Note 3. Sony also unveiled the mini version of its top-end Xperia Z1 this year, named the Xperia Z1 Compact.

India eye win in 4th ODI to keep series alive against New Zealand

HAMILTON: Having snatched a thrilling tie from the jaws of defeat in the last game, India would look to build on their new-found momentum and aim for their first win of the tour in order to keep the contest alive when they take on New Zealand in the fourth ODI on Tuesday.

The series stands at 2-0 in favour of New Zealand after India lost the first two ODIs in Napier (by 24 runs) and Hamilton (by 15 runs), while the third ODI at Auckland finished in a scintillating last-ball tie on Saturday.

Even though India cannot win the series anymore, the visitors at least can level the rubber and keep their world number one ranking intact, but for that to happen they need to win Tuesday's match at Seddon Park as well as the fifth ODI at Wellington.

India's bowling in favourable New Zealand conditions has been a big let down for the team, but the fighting spirit and resilience of Indian batsmen took the first two ODIs close and tied the third to keep the series alive.

India, however, can take heart from its performance in the third ODI. Chasing an imposing 315, Ravindra Jadeja nearly pulled off asensational win before the contest ended in a tie.

Jadeja smacked the Kiwi bowlers to all parts of the ground to scored an unbeaten 45-ball 66 to take India close in the third ODI from a no-hope position. He was ably supported byRavichandran Ashwin who scored a quickfire 65 off 46 balls.

Interestingly, one of the key features of this series so far has been the fact that India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has won the toss and opted to chase in all three previous games.

It is a practice that runs long back. In South Africa, Dhoni won the toss in the first two ODIs at Johannesburg and Durban, and elected to chase, thereafter losing both matches.

At home prior, in two ODIs versus Australia (Ranchi and Nagpur) and one against West Indies (Kanpur), Dhoni did the same.

The last time India batted first after winning the toss was in January 2013, against England at Kochi. In 18 ODIs since then, home or away, the Men in Blue have always preferred to chase down targets after winning the toss.

The last time India batted first abroad, after winning the toss, was against Sri Lanka at Pallekele, all the way back in August 2012.

If the sub-continent is taken out of this consideration, then the last occasion of India batting first after winning the toss was against South Africa in Johannesburg on January 15, 2011, a full three years ago.

It clearly shows that there is a high propensity for the Men in Blue to field first.

New Zealand, on the other hand, has preferred to bat first and come tomorrow, the script will be more or less similar on a pitch that will be slow and become slower in the second innings.

Taking that into consideration, New Zealand will definitely want to bat first and once again post a big total on the board for the Indians to chase.

India too didn't give any indication that they will change their plan of chasing despite the slowness of the Hamilton pitch.

It seems the Indian think-tank believes that the pressure of a run-chase is more bearable which was clearly evident from vice-captain Virat Kohli's statement after the first ODI at Napier.

"Chasing allows breaking down of targets and calculations over a period of time and overs," Kohli had said then.

There is evidence to support this theory. If that January 2011 date is taken as a marker, then until the tied ODI at Auckland, India have played 30 ODIs (across all venues) in which they have opted to field first after winning the toss and earned victorious in 18 (one no-result) of these matches.

It is no secret that the Indian batting - on whose prowess this chase-theory is based - has not fired in unison in this series so far.

The openers have squandered their starts, particularly Rohit Sharma in the last two ODIs at Hamilton and Auckland. Ajinkya Rahane is still trying to find his feet at number four position, while Suresh Raina's compulsive pulling -- a shot he is not very good at -- is proving to be his downfall.

Kohli and Dhoni are the only ones among runs, but their ability to chase down targets is hit by the batting line-up's inconsistency.

Even so, the three ODIs here in New Zealand have been too close to call. At Napier, India fell short by only 19 runs, when Kohli, Dhoni and Jadeja fell in quick succession. At Hamilton, if the D/L method is negated for a moment, the misfiring Indian batting did conquer the Black Caps' total of 271/1 by six runs, finishing at 277/9 with three balls to spare. And in the last game, the Indians did score 314 for nine in a start-stop stuttering fashion.

But as Dhoni pointed out later, the important thing is that the Men in Blue are still alive in this series.

This alone should be a worrisome point for New Zealand. Brendon McCullum hasn't been forced to make a decision at the toss, and his side has become increasingly comfortable with their well-rehearsed tactic of batting first, saving wickets in the first 30 overs and then going all out in the death with wickets in hand.

But this ploy back-fired at Eden Park, almost, as Corey Anderson was dismissed cheaply for the first time in three matches.

The thing which would definitely bother the Kiwis is that that they failed to close out the third ODI after reducing India to 146 for five at one stage.

At Auckland, for the first time in the series, the Black Caps let go off an opportunity and India pounced on it.
