Galaxy Note 3 third-party accessory support affected by KitKat update: Reports
According to user forum posts, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has stopped supporting third-party accessories post its Android 4.4.2 KitKat update.
The Galaxy Note 3's Android 4.4 KitKat update started rolling out globally in mid-January for the Snapdragon 800-powered (SM -N9005) variant, while the handset's Exynos 5 Octa-variant (SM -N900) started receiving its KitKat update a couple of days ago. The latest KitKat firmware for the Galaxy Note 3 is said to revamp the performance of the flagship phablet by improving the RAM management and by increasing the system stability.
Users have reported KitKat-based Galaxy Note 3 accessory problems on the XDA forum. As Sammobile notes, Samsung had been rumoured for a few months to be on the verge of enforcing a policy that would ensure the Galaxy Note 3, and future high-end devices would not support any third-party accessory that has not been Samsung certified. Accessories would have to sport an official Samsung identification chip to function correctly.
It now appears that Samsung has started enforcing this policy via the new update, and for accessory makers, this means that most of their products that were being used by the Galaxy Note 3 have now becoming non-functioning - which leads to the question of how those companies will redress customers.
XDA forum users also report that rooting the Galaxy Note 3 should fix the issue, but of course, we do not recommend the path, as it entails a few risks. One can only assume that the accessory makers will soon commence licensing the ID chip from Samsung.

iPhone 6 to sport 4.8-inch display, design internally 'locked down': Report
While Apple's next iPhone might still be far from hitting shelves, the speculation around it is endless. Now, an analyst has claimed that the Cupertino based company has finalised, or internally "locked down" much of the design of its next iPhone, believed to be dubbed iPhone 6.
Apple Insider cites analyst Timothy Arcuri from Cowen and Company, who says that Apple has finalised a 4.8-inch display for its alleged iPhone 6, in an attempt to counter the phablet competition in the global market.
Further, Arcuri, citing Apple's supply chain, has revealed that this year's iPhone, apart from hardware upgrades, will bring along key software innovations with the next major iOS platform release. Acuri has claimed that the alleged iPhone 6 will come with Wi-Fi (802.11ac), which will be an upgrade to the current 802.11n found on the iPhone 5s.
The analyst speculates that the Cupertino-based company will use features such as iBeacon, Touch ID and Passbook in the next alleged iPhone to push new services with mobile payments.
Acuri also expects that Apple, following its launch schedule for iPhone devices, will announce the alleged iPhone 6 in September.
Contradicting to the current report, a Chinese analyst recently claimed that Apple might launch an iPhone with 4.7-inch display at the WWDC event scheduled in June 2014, while a 5.7-inch variant would follow it soon after. According to the Chinese analyst, Apple would launch two iPhone models, much like the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s announced last year; and this time, it has been believed they would be sporting different screen sizes.
The analyst also suggested that the Cupertino-based company would start trial-production of the alleged iPhone with a 4.7-inch display in February, and if things go Apple's way, the company would start mass-production of the 4.7-inch iPhone in May.

Facebook is like an infectious disease, experiencing a spike before its decline, according to US researchers who claim the social network will lose 80 percent of users by 2017.
Two doctoral candidates in mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University made their astonishing claims in a paper published online at a scientific research archive, but not yet peer-reviewed.
Based on the rise and fall of MySpace, John Cannarella and Joshua Spechler say that Facebook, the largest online social network in history, is set for a massive fall.
"Ideas, like diseases, have been shown to spread infectiously between people before eventually dying out, and have been successfully described with epidemiological models," they wrote.
They applied a modified epidemiological model to describe the dynamics of user activity of online social networks, using Google data that is publicly available.
It will make uncomfortable reading for the social media giant co-founded by Mark Zuckerberg, which has more than 1.1 billion users around the globe and turns 10 years old next month.
Their study said Facebook, whose shares climbed to a new high of $58.51 this week, has been in decline in terms of data usage since 2012.
"Facebook is expected to undergo rapid decline in the upcoming years, shrinking to 20 percent of its maximum size by December 2014," said the report posted online to peers at ArXiv.org.
"Extrapolating the best model into the future suggests that Facebook will undergo a rapid decline in the coming years, losing 80 percent of its peak user base between 2015 and 2017."
The new research comes amid surveys suggesting that younger users started gravitating away from Facebook in 2013.
Cannarella and Spechler told AFP they did not wish to comment publicly in person until their manuscript had completed its peer review process ahead of formal publication.
But at least for now, Facebook's fortunes are in good health.
Rising share prices have made chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg the latest tech billionaire and Zuckerberg, 29, has a personal fortune estimated at about $19 billion.

Samsung Galaxy S5 tipped for February 23 launch; buttonless design patent granted
Samsung seems to be in no mood to rest after the laurels earned by its premium smartphones, as the company is said to launch its much-anticipated Galaxy S5 next month.
Mobile Review's Eldar Murtazin claims that the South Korean plans to launch the much-anticipatedSamsung Galaxy S5 at an event in Barcelona on February 23, ahead of MWC 2014. Murtazin also claims that the alleged Galaxy S5 will be available by the end of April and suggests that a new TouchWiz UI is in tow. The tweet said, "Samsung Galaxy S5 launch - 18.00. Barcelona. 23 February. Price the same. Launch - end of April. Specs - u know them :) new touchwiz ;)"
The tweet does not reveal any details about the innards of the expected Galaxy S5 but suggest that the specifications are 'known', pointing out to the previous reports.
However, contradicting the February 23 launch, a Samsung executive had earlier reportedly confirmedthat there would be no flagship smartphone unveiling at the MWC. Further, the unnamed executive also claimed that the alleged Galaxy S5 could be expected to be launched in March at a New York event.
Rumoured specifications of the Galaxy S5 include a 2K display, boasting a resolution of 1440x2560 pixels (QHD); a 2900mAh battery, and an eye-scanning sensor. Notably, a device codenamed Samsung SM-G900S, and sporting a screen resolution of 1440x2560 pixels (2K) was leaked in December last year. The device was believed to be the Samsung Galaxy S5, and was said to feature a 5-inch or 5.2-inch display, making the pixel density an incredible 560ppi at that resolution.
Other rumoured specifications of the Galaxy S5 include a Exynos 6 (believed to be the successor of the Exynos 5 octa-core chipsets) or Snapdragon 805 processors; Android 4.4 KitKat and Super AMOLED display.
In addition, Sammy Today in a recent report has revealed that United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) have granted Samsung a new design patent. According to the site, the new design patent shows a Samsung smartphone with no buttons on the front panel.
It's worth pointing out that a report on Tuesday claimed that the South Korean manufacturer has beenconsidering equipping its 2014 flagship with the fingerprint sensor feature below the display. Further, the report suggested that users would be required to scan their fingerprints on the screen.
We have been hearing a lot of rumours about the alleged Galaxy S5 smartphone, however, we are yet to hear an official word from the company.

LG G Pro 2 to reportedly feature 6-inch full-HD display and 3GB of RAM
LG, the Korean mobile manufacturer currently best known for the Google Nexus 5 and its flagship curved screen smartphone, the LG G Flex, is now rumoured to bring the anticipated next iteration of the LG G Pro next month, along with some high-end specifications.
The yet-to-be-announced LG G Pro 2 is said to come with a 6-inch display size along with a full-HD (1080 x 1920 pixel) resolution. The smartphone is also said to be powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, paired with 3GB of RAM, reports ET News. The previous rumoured specifications of the device indicated that the expected G Pro 2 would come with a 5.9-inch display with 1440 x 2560 QHD resolution.
With more QHD screens entering the smartphone and tablet market, it is slightly difficult to expect the firm to come out with a 1080p screen, especially as its Ultra-HD mobile display technology is already being used by other manufacturers - as seen in the Vivo Xplay 3 S.
On the other hand, LG's biggest rival, Samsung, is also expected to come up with a number of QHD displays by next month's Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona.
Reports from Korea indicate LG plans to equip an fingerprint scanner on its upcoming rumoured LG Optimus G Pro successor (LG G Pro 2) and the LG G3. The report further indicates that LG might house the fingerprint scanner on the rear panel of the rumoured G Pro successor and G3. We expect that the company might place the fingerprint scanner on the alleged G Pro successor and G3 at the back, much like the HTC One Max.
The firm has been following a new design aesthetic that includes the power and volume rocker buttons at the back panel, already seen on the 2013 flagship smartphone, the LG G2 and the G Flex, while the latter also features a 'self-healing' back panel.

Snapchat's brand new 'find the ghost' security feature gets hacked
Snapchat, the recently hacked mobile photo-sharing service, has introduced two new features to improve the overall security of its apps, out of which, one has been hacked within an hour of its release.
The company introduced a new picture-based security layer called 'find the ghost' to prevent bots from creating several dummy accounts that can potentially be used to procure user phone numbers. As it is like an image-based captcha security in function, the feature was humorously termed 'Snaptcha' by TechCrunch, which first reported the feature. According to the report, the feature was introduced after the discovery that some bots can successfully go through the company's regular captcha-security feature.
The new layer of security shows nine images to its new users while they create their accounts. Out of those nine images, the user would have to identify only those images which show Snapchat's ghost mascot. Snapchat created the 'ghost' security feature with the hope that bots would not be able to successfully identify the right images.
Additionally the photo-messaging service has also started server-side checks to ensure that the those users who use the Find Friends feature are real people with verified phone numbers. This security feature is meant to reduce the number of spammers and scammers dropping down the possibilities of hacking. However, users still not sure about this feature, can unlink their phone numbers to stay safe.
While Snapchat implemented the image-recognition based security layer, Steven Hickson, a computer science graduate student at Georgia Tech, has come up with a '100 lines of code' that can beat the image-based security layer. The news came from Hickson's blog.
The technique (seen in the image below) is said to find the best match between the nine ghost-check Snapchat pictures and the reference images, thereby with some accuracy choosing the pictures that actual contain the Snapchat ghost mascot. Interestingly, Hickson has in the past worked in the fields of computer vision and robot perception, which undoubtedly were handy when coding the Snaptcha-beater. This also makes him slightly more qualified to program such a bot than the average hacker, giving some slight credit back to Snapchat developers for having thought Snaptcha would have worked.
Hickson, on his blog says:
With very little effort, my code was able to "find the ghost" in the above example with 100% accuracy. I'm not saying it is perfect, far from it. I'm just saying that if it takes someone less than an hour to train a computer to break an example of your human verification system, you are doing something wrong. There are a ton of ways to do this using computer vision, all of them quick and effective. It's a numbers game with computers and Snapchat's verification system is losing.
It is not clear whether a fix for the hack will be addressed by the company or not, as the company as not responded. Additional security features for the messaging service are said to be on the way.

Micromax starts Russia operations with launch of Canvas Beat, Canvas Social
Micromax has announced the launch of its Russia operations in partnership with VVP Group - one of the leading distribution companies in the country. The popular domestic handset maker has announced that it will be launching 14 Bolt and Canvas series smartphones in the initial phase.
The company said it is also targeting to be among the top four brands by the end of 2014 in Russia. Micromax claims that its service infrastructure across Russia is ready, and that it plans to have more than 60 operational service centres by the end of January.
Notably, the Micromax Canvas Social (A94) is noticeably a variant of the Micromax MAd (A94) smartphone, which was recently launched in India, featuring identical specifications. However, it's worth pointing out that the Canvas Social for Russian market does not feature Micromax Advertising Application (MAd) app.
On the other hand, the Canvas Beat (A114R) can also be considered to be a variant of an already launched Indian smartphone, the Canvas 2.2 (A114). We presume the R prefix is for the Russian market, however, the two phones don't share the same processor and battery specifications. The Canvas Beat (A114R) runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and is a dual-SIM phablet (GSM+GSM). It features a 5-inch qHD (540x960 pixels) IPS display, and is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Broadcom BCM23550 processor along with 1GB of RAM.
The Canvas Beat sports an 8-megapixel autofocus rear camera accompanied by flash, and also includes a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. The smartphone comes with 4GB inbuilt storage, with no word on expandable storage (the Canvas 2.2 however, did feature the functionality - up to 32GB via microSD card). The Micromax Canvas Beat also packs a 1900mAh battery, as compared to the Canvas 2.2's 2000mAh one.
Commenting on the launch, Mr. Rahul Sharma, co-founder, Micromax said, "As we look to take Micromax to key international markets, we are excited to announce our foray into the Russian mobile handset market which has immense potential not only for smartphones and features phones, but also for innovative tablets and data products. Our initial focus in the Russian market is to replicate the success witnessed in our other markets in the last couple of years."
An earlier report in November last year had suggested that Micromax will be assembling phones in India and would be targeting Russian market.
Sharma further added, "We see a growing trend of data consumption through mobile devices in Russia, and we would be initiating partnerships with the leading operators in the region to aim at efficient data consumption on our devices in the coming year".

Microsoft reports strong Q2 earnings; Xbox, Surface sales help
Microsoft Corp. reported revenue and earnings for its fiscal second quarter that topped Wall Street expectations, as the company sold 3.9 million Xbox One consoles to retailers and doubled revenue from its line of Surface tablets from a quarter earlier.
Net income in the quarter through December climbed to $6.56 billion, or 78 cents per share, from $6.38 billion, or 76 cents per share, a year ago.
Revenue rose 14 percent to $24.52 billion.
Analysts polled by FactSet expected earnings of 68 cents per share on revenue of $23.67 billion.
Outgoing CEO Steve Ballmer, who announced he'd step down by August, said in a statement the Redmond, Wash.-based company's devices and consumer segment had a "great holiday quarter." A new CEO is expected to be announced soon.
Surface revenue rose to $893 million in the quarter, up from $400 million in the three months through September, as the company benefited from a summertime price cut to its first-generation models, unveiled the Surface 2 and expanded the number of places it is sold at retail.
"There's better hardware, the software continues to improve and there's better market perception," said Chris Suh, Microsoft's general manager of investor relations, in an interview with The Associated Press. He added that there has been "good pick-up" of Surface 2. "The trajectory is a lot better than a couple of quarters ago."
However, analysts continue to question the company's new focus on manufacturing hardware on top of its mainstay software business. The Surface division continued to lose money as the company strived to reach manufacturing scale that would make it profitable. Meanwhile, Xbox One, which launched in November, is still in the money-losing phase typical of new consoles, though that should change in later years as it profits from game sales.
Making matters worse on the hardware front, Microsoft plans to complete its $7.4 billion acquisition of Nokia's phone business and patent rights early this year, but the Finnish phone maker reported earlier in the day that its smartphone sales plummeted 29 percent in the December quarter despite releasing new Lumia models.
"I would call it a Herculean challenge to turn around that mobile business," said Daniel Ives, senior technology analyst with FBR Capital Markets. "They have a lot of wood to chop ahead."
The company withstood a steep decline in personal computer sales, which research firm Gartner pegged at a 7 percent decline worldwide in the December quarter and IDC put at 6 percent.
Microsoft said revenue from its flagship operating system fell just 3 percent, reflecting a 12 percent gain from PCs that its partners sold to enterprises, although it made no distinction between which version sold better, Windows 7 or its much-criticized Windows 8.1. Some businesses are still upgrading to Windows 7 as the company plans to end support for Windows XP in April. Windows revenue from consumer purchases fell 20 percent, dragged down by a sharp decline in China.
Overall, revenue from its devices and consumer segment grew 13 percent to $11.91 billion, while revenue from commercial products like server operating systems and cloud computing services grew 10 percent to $12.67 billion.
Microsoft's shares rose $1.29, or 3.6 percent, to $37.34 in after-hours trading Thursday following the release of the results. Earlier, the stock closed the regular session up 13 cents at $36.06.

Toys from Trash: Teachings kids science using everyday objects
The road to the offices inside Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics' (IUCAA) Children Science Centre in Pune passes through a well-set, well-manicured lawn past the administrative buildings of the place. The tranquil atmosphere of the campus is broken only by the chaos in the room opposite his office. Noisy children are playing with 2D and 3D models made of matchsticks. Whilst some, sporting mischievous grins, are using a syringe pump to squirt water at distances of five feet, others are busy powering up an LED generator.
The office of Arvind Gupta, Visiting Scientist, is nothing like your average office. It's more of a warehouse, with toys made from regular junk, piling up every nook and cranny. There is a white board with figures and calculations scrawled across in one corner. A large table is piled up with toys across which Gupta sits on a bar-stool. And somewhere amidst the mess is also a powerful desktop computer where two assistants work on uploading videos to YouTube and documenting the new toys. It is rather ordinary. And yet filled with an innate extra-ordinariness.
For the last three decades, Arvind Gupta has been making toys, to explain the concepts of science to children. For a moment though, when standing in the warehouse-looking-office, there is a quick, recurring, memory of Aamir Khan's character from the film '3 Idiots.' Gupta himself laughs at the comparison. Anyone around cannot escape his energy. He, himself, is careful enough to infect anyone around him as he talks about his work.
The energy that is spoken about is evident in his workshops, which he conducts with school children as well as teachers. One of the more regular questions that Gupta puts to children during his workshops is, "What is common in between a Transrapid maglev train, five circular magnets, a pencil, a discarded sole of a rubber slipper and a compact disc?" A question like this might send the smartest brains scratching their heads on a normal day. Gupta, however, feels otherwise. At his office on the already over-cluttered table lie the tools for the answer.
A discarded rubber slipper sole with three slots cut into the three openings for the bands, having a couple of magnets inserted in them. A cut compact disc (CD) and a pencil complete the collection. Gupta takes the piece of the CD and puts it in the longer slot towards the toe end and transfixes it there. The pencil is fixed with two magnets around it and then bought into the picture. Understandably, the polarity on the magnets in the sole and on the pencil is the same, so they repel. Touching the point of the pencil to the CD, Gupta gives it a spin and the magnetic levitation causes the pencil, suspended in mid-air, to spin in an endless loop.
"All the costs involved in the making of this spinning pencil is that of the magnets. Its not difficult to find a discarded slipper, a CD and a pencil," says Gupta. The simple spinning pencil is the toy created by Gupta to explain the complex process of magnetic levitation. It is not difficult to see why his toys have found popularity not only amongst his peers, but also his real audience-children. Magnetic levitation might be one tiny part of the toy factory, but it just goes to show the amount of ingenuity that goes into making something so simple, so easily accessible.
For Gupta, a sexagenarian, the journey began a long time ago somewhere in the bylanes of Bareily. "My parents never went to school. Perhaps that is the most important reason behind it all," he says. "They understood the value of education. My mother ensured that we all went to the best school in town. It inculcated that value, the hunger to learn and more importantly to give back to society. It stayed on."
His project, Toys from Trash has steadily garnered a fan following, thanks largely to the Internet. Gupta and his team work on making toys from everyday waste materials. The procedure of making these toys, along with the explanation of the concept behind them, is then documented on video and uploaded to Gupta's YouTube channel.
The details of the beginnings for Toys From Thrash involves a trip down memory lane for Gupta, who many will recall as a familiar face from their childhood thanks to Doordarshan's programme calledTarang. Post his schooling came a degree in engineering from IIT Kanpur and then a job at TELCO in Pune in 1975. "I have been often asked, why make toys for children, and I have always replied, the answer lies in my schooling," Gupta says. "The missionary school that I studied at inculcated the value of 'working for the poor'. That stayed on with me always. And continues to stay on."
It was the year 1978, three years after Sholay had become a blockbuster, when Gupta took a year off from his job at Telco to work with Kishor Bharti, an NGO, dedicated to revitalising and popularising science learning in school through experiments. He spent time at a village that was under the umbrella of the Hoshangabad Science Teaching Programme (HSTP). Gupta remembers those days fondly, saying, "Every week it had a bazaar, from where I picked up things I needed for my creations. Very soon I was designing 2D and 3D shapes using matchsticks and bicycle valve tubes. I was makingMeccano toys for children out of things sold or found on the road and it was fun. And what's more important is, they could learn about all this, make it in their own houses and study at the same time. It dawned upon me making science toys was more fun than making trucks."
In his case it has definitely been more satisfying to make toys rather than trucks. And if numbers could speak, they would have some staggering details to tell. Gupta and his team, in the last three decades, have made over 4,200 videos. These videos are available in 18 different languages. In the last two years, they have made over 700 toys to explain the concepts of gravitation, centrifugal and centripetal forces, magnetism, friction, electricity, crystal lattice structures, mathematical models, Newtonian laws and other whatnots. The videos have garnered nearly 25 million views on Youtube, while Gupta himself has taught in over 3,000 schools in 20 countries. In addition there are 4,000 books on thewebsite on the topics of education, environment, peace, science and mathematics. "On a daily basis around 12,000 books are downloaded for free. In addition another volunteer, Dr. Breezy Ocana Flaquer, dubbed 300 of our videos in Spanish. Millions of children across Latin America were able to see them," he adds.
Gupta brings up an invention called Touching Slate, designed by Pragya and Dilip Bhatt, an Ahmedabad-based couple. "Their son Nikunj, was born 18 years ago visually impaired. They designed the slate for him and now it helps over 13 million visually impaired children, according to surveys conducted by the government in India," says Gupta, as he marvels at the ingenuity of the toy. "The slate is made of Velcro - with millions of nylon hooks. One can write with a wool disperser - it is like a fishing line. As one draws on the slate wool comes out of the pen and sticks to the slate. The children can 'feel', the drawing with their fingers."
Gupta and his team uploaded a video that showed how anyone could build the Touching Slate using material easily available at home. A teacher working with special children in Bangkok saw this video and made slate for his visually impaired students. "It got a huge response and he even got a corporate sponsorship to make these slates for all Blind Schools in Thailand," says Gupta. "That is the power of design, functionality and usage. Who can say that it costs less than a 100 rupees to make one? But it is there. Inexpensive and very functional."
Gupta's work is as practical as it gets, far removed from the world of PhDs and scientific papers. He is unable to hold back his laughter while recalling the attempts of some determined individuals to comprehend the science behind one of his creations. "Six research papers have been written on it till now to explain the phenomenon," says Gupta. "The papers are in detail. The angle of the cut, the depth of the notches and things like that. The toy is anything but all that. It's just basic and simple. And they say making toys is dull!"
While some may say science is dying in a world increasingly dominated by MBAs, Gupta disagrees. "There is a hunger in children for learning science. As an advisor to UNSECO on science teaching I have travelled to countries and I can say that children here in India are just as smart as any others. They just need better science mentors and techniques."
Ask Gupta about the future, and he is both sad and optimistic, with almost a childlike-enthusiasm. "We are desperately looking for volunteers to dub the videos into Bangla, Oriya and Nepalese. Imagine how many children would benefit from these videos in these places," he says. "I make toys for a living, make children happy, help them discover science and even manage to earn liveable wages out of it. That is how much joy there is to give, and inherit from, this world."

Qualcomm buys Palm patents from HP for undisclosed amount
Cell-phone chip maker Qualcomm Inc. said Thursday it has acquired patents once owned by smartphone maker Palm Inc. from Hewlett-Packard for an undisclosed amount.
Qualcomm says the purchase covers 1,400 U.S. patents and about 1,000 more foreign patients for the company's mobile computing technology.
Hewlett-Packard Co. paid $1 billion for Palm in 2010 as part of its first foray into tablet computers and smartphones, which ran on Palm's operating system. The effort flopped and HP now sells tablets usingGoogle Inc.'s Android and a recently introduced version of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows. Palo Alto, California-based HP hasn't re-entered the smartphone market.
The Palm acquisition was one of three major purchases that have haunted HP, along with technology consulting service EDS and business software maker Autonomy. In November of 2012, Hewlett took an $8.8 billion writedown on the Autonomy acquisition, saying it was the victim of a multibillion-dollar fraud at the hands of the British company. Autonomy's former CEO said HP's allegations were false.
HP last year sold Palm's mobile operating system, webOS, to LG Electronics, which now implants the software in Internet-connected TVs.
Qualcomm didn't elaborate on its plans for the Palm patent portfolio. Big tech companies in recent years have been looking to expand their patent portfolios to help introduce new technology and protect themselves from lawsuits.
The San Diego company last year introduced a smartwatch called Toq to showcase the potential wearable devices that can connect to the Internet.
Qualcomm also revealed plans at CES 2014 to make inroads into the tablet and car connectivity segments. The firm is betting big on future tablets with robust operating systems manufactured by leading tech firms like Nokia, Sony, Samsung and LG.

Nokia X: What company's long-rumoured Android phone will reportedly be called
Nokia's rumoured budget Android smartphone, thought to be codenamed Normandy, has been in the news for months now, with leaked images hitting the Internet on a regular basis, along with speculated availability and specifications.
Now @evleaks has claimed that Nokia's only Android phone might be launched as the Nokia X. The popular phone tipster's tweet reads, "Project Normandy = Nokia X." It is noteworthy that in the past, @evleaks has come out with fairly accurate information regarding yet-to-be-announced devices and we will not be surprised if he manages to hit the bull's eye even with Nokia's alleged Android phone.
Unfortunately, there are no details except the alleged Nokia X name which the tipster claims will be Normandy's final name.
Earlier, phone tipster @evleaks had posted a pair of screenshot which it claimed to show the alleged Nokia Normandy's UI. The leaked screenshots of the Normandy's UI purportedly reveals the home screen and the notifications page. Notably, the home screen panel's leaked screenshot included apps for dialler, message, contacts, internet, Twitter, Skype, MixRadio, Here Maps, Camera app, Plants Vs. Zombies, Gallery, Vine, Facebook, Calculator, Calendar, Alarms, Music, Downloads, Radio, Viber, Opera and WeChat. It's worth pointing out that the home screen of the alleged Normandy looked very similar to the tiles-based UI seen on Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices.
In addition, the leaked home screen panel of Normandy also included the BBM app which points to the device actually running Android version (BBM is not on Windows Phone, and won't be, for the near future), however, there are no credible reports on the Android version as of now.

Companies Like Goldman Sachs, Flipkart, Microsoft And Others Hiring Briskly At Non-IIM B-School
A bunch of companies that will be in the thick of the IIM campus placement season — kicking off in two weeks — are already on the prowl, hiring healthy numbers from non-IIM B-schools across the country.
Goldman Sachs is offering Rs 30 -Rs 34 lakh in some non-IIM colleges, while Flipkart, one of the regulars now is rolling out Rs 16-Rs 18 lakh packages.
Others like Microsoft, Asian Paints, ITC, GE, ICICI Bank, JP Morgan, Capgemini, Idea,Vodafone, Kellogg, Cognizant Business Consulting, CRISIL, Mahindra & Mahindra, Barclays,Wipro, IBM and Marico are all hiring briskly at the non-IIM B-schools. Beverage company Pernod Ricard is on the lookout for its international management trainee programme in Asia. All this suggests that IIM placements will be hotly contested this year, too, despite the bleak economic environment.
Placement at non-IIM B-schools has been underway since December and IIM placements will start rolling in February, with older institutes from Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Kolkata leading the way.
Sources from placement teams at such non-IIM B-schools say they are relieved as early hiring has been much better than their expectations. Goldman Sachs is one such example.
“Our overall recruitment from management schools has increased this year,” says V Bunty Bohra, chief executive officer for Goldman Sachs Bangalore. E-commerce company Flipkart, which was one of the top recruiters at IITs with 118 hires, has taken an aggressive stance. It has already hired 20 MBAs from non IIM Bschools. Flipkart intends to hire in good numbers from the older IIMs, too, a company spokesperson said.
Pre-placement offers in large numbers have also been a saving grace in these uncertain times. Early evidence also suggests a slight uptick in salaries. “There will be at least a 15-20% increase in the average salary of 336 students this year,” says Kanwal Kapil, chairperson, placements, for MDI Gurgaon. Their average offer was Rs 12.9 lakh last year and the highest domestic salary was Rs 20.8 lakh by Amazon. While Amazon has recruited this year, too, an FMCG firm made the best domestic offer of Rs 23.5 lakh.
At SP Jain Institute Of Management Research (SPJIMR), average packages have seen an increase of 10-12% over last year, according to Sonali Kohli Mehra, deputy chairperson, external relations, PGDM. “It’s not back to the pre-2008 days, but things are definitely better than last year,” says Saveeta Mohanty, faculty coordinator, XIM Bhubaneswar. The institute started placements on January 6, with 40 PPOs in hand for the 180-strong PGDM (BM) batch. It is now down to the last 20% of the batch. The rest have bagged offers from 40-plus companies.
Consultancies and banks are recruiting in good numbers while e-commerce companies and startups have also shown an interest. This is another sign of what to expect at IIM placements this year.
Even though early hiring is better than expected, companies are still careful to pick the right candidates. “A majority have redesigned their recruitment strategies by including additional stages like psychometric tests, team tasks, essay writing, co-ordination and leadership qualities,” says Debashis Sanyal, dean, NMIMS School of Business Management.
The Mumbai-based institute has 450 students to place this year compared to 474 last year. More than one fourth of the companies coming this year are first-timers on campus.
IMS Health, which provides information, services and technology for the global healthcare industry recruited a student from WE School (previously Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research) for Rs 20 lakh. This is Rs 7 lakh more than what Accenture, the highest paying recruiter on the domestic front, offered last year. The batch of 2014 has 314 offers and 80% of the class is already placed. “There are still several companies that are conducting the process and we should soon be closing our hiring season with 100% placement,” says Uday Salunkhe, group director, WE School.
Down south, students of Manipalbased TA Pai Management School (TAPMI) have received over four international offers of Rs 47 lakh and highest domestic packages of Rs 12.5 lakh so far. “Engagement with prime industries such as business consulting, FMCG, investment banking, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, IT consulting, and airlines has increased substantially this season,” says RC Natarajan, director, TAPMI.
