Amazon has filed a patent for shipping products based on prediction of what the buyers would purchase even before they have bought it.
WASHINGTON: Taking the buying process to the next level, Amazon has filed a patent for shipping products based on prediction of what the buyers would purchase even before they have bought it.

The online shopping site had filed a patent in August 2012, describing the method of "anticipatory shipping" and was granted the solo right on December 24 last year.

The idea is to minimize human involvement and automatically determine the requirements of customers and ship the product in the general direction even before buyers have placed their orders, TechCrunch reported.

The Amazon delivery patent intends to route the supposedly buyable products to a select address or a certain geographical area using historical buying patterns of buyers or preferences expressed via surveys/questionnaires, buyers' habits and more.

Google, Facebook & others: Obama's NSA reforms 'insufficient'

Google, Facebook & others: Obama's NSA reforms 'insufficient'

Google, Facebook & others: Obama's NSA reforms 'insufficient'
Eight of the world's best-known technology companies underscored their common interest in curbing the NSA by releasing a joint.

SAN FRANCISCO: Technology companies and industry groups took President Barack Obama's speech on US surveillance as a step in the right direction, but chided him for not embracing more dramatic reforms to protect people's privacy and the economic interests of American companies that generate most of their revenue overseas.

"The president's speech was empathetic, balanced and thoughtful, but insufficient to meet the real needs of our globally connected world and a free internet," said Ed Black, president of the Computer & Communications Industry Association, a group that representsGoogle, Microsoft, Facebook and other technology companies upset about the NSA's broad surveillance of online communications.

On Friday, the president called for ending the government's control of phone data from hundreds of millions of Americans and ordered intelligence agencies to get a court's permission before accessing such records. He also issued a directive that intelligence-gathering can't be employed to suppress criticism of the United States or provide a competitive advantage to US companies.

In addition, the president directed Attorney General Eric Holder and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper to consider whether new privacy safeguards could be added to online data gathering. Although those activities are only meant to target people outside the US as part of national security investigations, information on Americans sometimes gets swept up in the collection.

Eight of the world's best-known technology companies underscored their common interest in curbing the NSA by releasing a joint, measured critique of Obama's proposal. They applauded the commitment to more transparency and more privacy protections for non-US citizens, but also stressed that the president didn't address all their concerns.

"Additional steps are needed on other important issues, so we'll continue to work with the administration and Congress to keep the momentum going and advocate for reforms consistent with the principles we outlined in December," said the statement from Google,Apple, Yahoo, Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and AOL.

In his speech, Obama also directed Holder and Clapper to look into new restrictions on the length of time the US can hold data collected overseas and the extent to which that data is used. He added that the US won't spy on regular people who don't threaten national security.

But nothing he said is likely to diminish the potential losses facing the US technology industry, said Daniel Castro, a senior analyst for the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a Washington DC think tank.

The ITIF estimates that the doubts raised by the NSA spying could cost US companies as much as $35 billion over the next three years.

In the aftermath of recent NSA leaks, the companies set aside their competitive differences to come together and urge Obama to curtail the NSA's online snooping and lift restrictions that prevent companies from publicly disclosing specifics about how frequently they are asked to turn over their users' personal information in the name of national security.

Obama did agree to at least one major concession to the technology industry by pledging "to make public more information than ever before about the orders they have received to provide data to the government." The companies are hoping greater transparency will show that the US government has only been demanding information about a very small fraction of their vast audiences.

But the promise of more disclosure didn't satisfy two different groups focused on online privacy and other digital rights.

"Far more needs to be done to restore the faith of the American people and repair the damage done globally to the US reputation as a defender of human rights on the internet," said Greg Nojeim, senior counsel at the Center for Democracy & Technology.

Cindy Cohn, legal director for the Electronic Frontier Foundation believes there's still a long way to go. "Now it's up to the courts, Congress, and the public to ensure that real reform happens, including stopping all bulk surveillance - not just telephone records collection," she said.

Recent revelations about how much information the US government has been vacuuming off the internet threaten to undercut the future profits of technology companies that depend on the trust of Web surfers and corporate customers.

US internet companies are worried that more people, especially those living outside the US, will use their products less frequently if they believe their personal data is being scooped up and stored by the US government.

Less online traffic would result in fewer opportunities to sell the ads that bring in most of the revenue at companies such as Google, Facebook and Yahoo. There is also concern that foreigners will be reluctant to do business with a wide range of US companies that sell online storage and software applications that require an internet connection.

Obama's proposal made "progress on the privacy side, but it doesn't address the economic issues," Castro said. "I don't see anything in the speech that will prevent companies in other countries from using what the NSA is doing to gain a competitive advantage over the US companies.
"

Wipro to give highest increment for niche skills

Wipro to give highest increment for niche skills

Wipro to give highest increment for niche skills
Wipro will give salary increments this year, and the increments will be most for certain skill sets that are in short supply.

BANGALORE: Wipro will give salary increments this year, and the increments will be most for certain skill sets that are in short supply.

The company's HR head Saurabh Govil said the highest increments would be for those like software architects, programme managers, domain specialists, delivery heads and customer relationship executives.

"We have to hold on to such people, so we have to give differential increments," he said.

The increments will be with effect from June 1, Wipro's traditional increment cycle. Govil said it was too early to say how much the increments would be.

Fresher hiring in the coming year will be more robust than last year, but Govil indicated that fresher salaries were likely to remain stagnant at between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 3.5 lakh.

Fresher salaries have been stagnant now for several years, given the huge increase in the number of engineering colleges and their output of fresh grads, combined with the sharp slowdown in demand for manpower from IT companies.

Wipro has actually seen a dip in its overall employee numbers in each of the last two quarters. In the entire nine months of this year, the company's total strength has moved up by just 590 — from 145,812 employees at the end of the last fiscal (ending March) to 146,402 at the end of December. This, in a company, that not very long ago used to add many thousands of employees each quarter.

Govil said this partly reflected the enormous efforts at automation. "The equation between revenue growth and headcount growth is changing. IT is industrializing," he said.

He said some of the hiring will move to customer locations overseas. "For the transformational work that we are doing more of, we need more people onsite," he said.

The US and UK have been traditionally big markets for Wipro. Continental Europe, Australia and South Africa are also now becoming increasingly important

TCS planning reusable software platforms

TCS planning reusable software platforms

TCS planning reusable software platforms
TCS is aiming to launch several reusable software packages as part of a push to adapt to the changing business and technology landscape

MUMBAI: Tata Consultancy Services is aiming to launch several reusable software packagesas part of a push to adapt to the changing business and technology landscape, chief executive & managing director Natarajan Chandrasekaran said.

India's largest software company is readying reusable software platforms, which can be customised, for areas such as telecommunication , financial services and data analytics, Chandrasekaran said in an interview.

"There are multiple things we are trying and everything we are not announcing because we have to try (it out) first. It's not just an intellectual capability to create a platform, it is market readiness as well," he said on Friday, a day after the company announced that its third-quarter revenue grew by 3%, slightly below analysts' expectations.

The company already has software platforms in human resources, finance, analytics and procurement. The Mumbai-based company, which has been setting the pace for India's software sector, has said it will grow faster than the 12-14 % projection for the industry.

With expected fiscal 2014 revenue of over $12 billion (Rs 75,000 crore), TCS is about one-third larger than its nearest Indian competitor Infosys. Information technology companies are turning to software platforms that can be tailored to suit customers' needs as a way of improving revenue productivity.

But building these platforms requires significant initial investment and success is not guaranteed. Chandrasekaran, 50, was of the view that firms will not want to move core processes to platforms, but non-core processes will do so.

iON may go global

"There may be a stage where core processes will find a different model but that is a long way away," he said. iON, a TCS initiative to offer no-frills technology solutions to small businesses in a pay-asyou-go model, is being considered for a global launch, he said.

The company is debating whether to take it first to emerging markets or developed markets, as well the manner in which it will be sold.

"We are not going the whole hog; we will start with targeting one or two companies. We will go to specific countries," he said. By far and away the market leader in India, TCS is starting to draw comparisons with its global rivals, particularly Accenture.

In a report last year, JPMorgan drew attention to the incremental revenue added byAccenture and TCS, pointing out that the latter was growing at a much faster pace. Although at $28.6 billion, Accenture is more than twice the size of TCS, it added only some $700 million in revenue in fiscal 2013 which ended in August.

TCS ended fiscal 2013 in March with incremental revenue of more than $1.4 billion. Chandrasekaran, however, declined to be drawn into comparisons. "I wouldn't want to comment I think I would rather be focused on what we need to do."

On the ongoing debate in the US about changes to that country's immigration system , he said it is unlikely to have a debilitating impact. Indian software firms individually as well as their grouping Nasscom have stepped up interactions with US.

"I don't think there is a situation that will come which is a complete risk to the business model, because if that is the case, it will also affect customers.
"

Playing four pacers not an option: MS Dhoni

NAPIER: Captain Mahendra Singh Dhonirefused to take a hard look at his spin twins after the first One-day game here at the McLean Park on Sunday afternoon, even though conditions clearly are not favourable for slow bowling.

"Two things happen whenever we play with four fast bowlers," he said, in a lighter vein. "One the captain gets banned, and two we lose. They are not good stats and I want to play in the series," he added, clearly suggesting that India have a better chance even on tours with their trusted 3-2 attack.

"It isn't an option," he stressed, underlining his strategy and stubbornness for the rest of the series. Ashwin went for 52 runs while Jadeja gave 61 in nine on a pitch that didn't take turn or allowed the ball to grip. "I think the spinners bowled pretty well. They didn't get wickets, but they built pressure which is also important," he argued. Dhoni, however, conceded that their roles will change when they play outside the sub continent. "As the home team will never make pitches that turn, they will have to keep varying pace and length," he said.

The captain, however, conceded that they haven't done well as a unit in the last six months. "We are batting well but not bowling so well." He also agreed that No. 4 and 5 have been a worry, with nobody showing signs of consistency.

He was full of praise for Virat Kohli though. "He is a free flowing batsman, and backs himself to play big shots. At the same time he knows what works for him."

His counterpart, Brendon McCullum, was understandably pleased with his team's fightback. "For a majority of the game, we were excellent. But when Virat and MS were putting together that partnership, we were slipping behind. But it's a funny game. You are only one or two wickets away from being right back in the driver's seat. Thankfully, we were able to get those wickets and finish off their batting."

Man of the match Corey Anderson tried to laugh off the suggestion that he could be the next big property in the Indian Premier League. "There will be speculation (about the IPL) and the auction's coming up soon. But I am focused on this Indian series."

He agreed that he couldn't expect a world record repeat. "When you do something like a Queenstown, you are only going to go downhill. So it was nice to come out here and put up a few runs. It was full credit to Kane and Roscoe for putting on that platform. The start makes my job and Ronchi's job pretty easy.
"

OLPC introduces two Android-based tablets for kids at CES 2014

xo-2-laptop-ces-635x475.jpg
One Laptop per Child (OLPC), a project supported by One Laptop per Child Association (OLPCA) and OLPC Foundation (OLPCF), has introduced a couple of tablets for children at CES 2014.
The tablets, OLPC XO-2 and XO-10, have almost the similar hardware specifications with some tweaks in the operating systems.
Announced on Tuesday, OLPC's XO-2 tablet costs $149 (roughly Rs. 9,200) with its availability dates kept undisclosed by the firm. The tablet operates on the much popular Android platform. However, the OS version and the processor installed in the device is not mentioned. XO-2 features a 7-inch, 1200x600 pixel LCD touchscreen display and 1GB of RAM to perform multiple tasks together. The device comes with an 8GB internal flash storage along with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. The tablet is also said to include a GPS feature and offer a battery life of seven hours in one single charge.
The XO-10 tablet is understood to set back a customer by $199 (roughly Rs. 12,300) but the date as to when this tablet will hit the shelves, is not mentioned. The tablet runs on what is being reported by Engadget as a heavily modified version of Android 4.4 Kitkat OS, paired with a quad-core processor and 1GB RAM. OLPC XO-10 sports a 10.1-inch 1200 x 600 LCD capacitive touch display along with the in-built storage size same as that in XO-2 tablet. With similar connectivity options as XO-2, the tablet offers more than 12 hours of battery life on single charge.
The main screen of the tablets are filled with different options for kids to learn about various professional fields, such as astronautics, science, programming, writing, music and athletics. Both the tablets will be available in Green colour variant only.

Toshiba unveils world's first 4K Ultra-HD display laptops at CES 2014

Toshiba unveils world's first 4K Ultra-HD display laptops at CES 2014toshiba-w50-ces-635x475.jpg

Over the last two days, all major computing and mobile technology related firms have been making interesting showcases of their upcoming products and technologies at CES 2014. Jumping onto the bandwagon, Toshiba, on Tuesday unveiled what seem to be the world's first ever 4K laptops at the ongoing event in Las Vegas. The two laptops, Tecra W50 and the Satellite P50t will not only feature full 4K Ultra-HD displays but will also run the new Windows 8.1 operating systems. Pricing and availability were not revealed by the company.
While the target audience for the powerful devices are across a wide segment, if reports are to be believed then the devices are a little on the chunkier side, with the stunning display in tow. The announcement was further endorsed by Microsoft, which announced, "Today Toshiba has made 4K display technology more accessible to mobile professionals and enthusiasts by announcing two exciting new Windows 8.1 laptops that feature integrated 15.6" 4K Ultra-HD displays. These new Toshiba 4K laptops will take laptop screen resolution to the next level!", on their official blog.
The Toshiba Tecra W50 is designed for professionals working with graphically-intensive applications, packing an integrated NVIDIA Quadro K2100M graphics with 2GB dedicated memory, fourth generation Intel Core processor, and a 15.6-inch 4K Ultra-HD display (3840 x 2160), 282 PPI, colour calibrated display.
toshiba-Satellite-P50t-ces-635x475.jpg
The second on the list is the Satellite P50t, which features the same display and resolution as the Tecra W50 and has an integrated touch functionality along with it. It could be safer to assume that the device will be targeted towards a more younger audience. The 4K Ultra-HD screen also features edge-to-edge glass with vibrant colour, crystal clarity, and higher contrast. Incidentally Toshiba didn't reveal any of the specifications for the P50t.
Both the Toshiba 4K laptops will go on sale in the middle of 2014. The pricing of the devices hasn't been revealed either. Toshiba might just charge top dollar for the two devices, as industry pundits are predicting. An interesting point in consideration to support this argument is that Panasonic will also be retailing their Panasonic Toughpad 4K UT-MB5, with its 20-inch 2840x2560 pixel resolution screen, in mid-February for $5,999 (Rs. 3,70,000) after first being revealed a year ago at CES 2013. While Toshiba is dealing with the laptop division they are certainly the first ones to announce a laptop and the pricing can be anybody's guess.

Sony unveils PlayStation Now game streaming service for mobiles, tablets, TVs

Sony unveils PlayStation Now game streaming service for mobiles, tablets, TVs

sony-ps4-ces-ap-635x475.jpg
Sony on Tuesday announced a hotly-anticipated streaming game service along with the news that it sold more than 4.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles by the start of this year.
PlayStation Now, set to begin a test phase this month and launch in the United States mid-year, promised to let gamers access blockbuster titles in the Internet "cloud" and play them on an array of devices intended to expand over time.
The new streaming game service will provide PlayStation gamers access to games they love from prior generation consoles and grow to extend play to other Internet linked devices such as smartphones and tablets, according to Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House.
A lament of gamers shifting to new-generation consoles is that the devices don't play games tailored for earlier models. Sony's service will begin by providing hit titles for play on PS4 and PS3 consoles, and then the Japanese entertainment titan's handheld Vita game devices.
"We are thrilled to deliver entertainment experiences only possible from PlayStation through our new streaming game service," said House.
Sony was demonstrating the service on some Bravia smart television models at its booth at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which will continue here through Friday.
The goal of the service is to let people "play where ever they want, when ever they want" and incorporates technology from cloud gaming company Gaikai, which Sony bought in 2012 for $380 million.
Gamers will be able to rent titles at PlayStation Now or pay for monthly subscriptions to the service, according to House.
House updated PlayStation 4 sales figures to say that 4.2 million consoles had been sold as of December 28 of last year. Sony launched the PS4 in on November 15.
Sony Entertainment Network will begin testing later this year a cloud-based television service in the United States, according to House.
The service will combine popular live television programs with a large library of on-demand content, according to Sony. Shows or films will stream to an array of devices, including tablets or smartphones made by competitors.
House heralded the new television service as a natural evolution of Sony's moves to combine strengths in entertainment, gaming and consumer electronics.
Pricing details for the gaming and television services were not revealed.

Bangalore-based Little Eye Labs is Facebook's first Indian acquisition

Bangalore-based Little Eye Labs is Facebook's first Indian acquisitionfacebook-little-eye-screenshot-635.jpg

Facebook's acquisition of Little Eye Labs, a Bangalore-based start-up has been rumoured for a while. The startup, which builds mobile app analysis tools for app developers and testers, announced on Wednesday that the acquisition had been completed.

According to the post titled 'transition' on the website of Little Eye Labs, after the acquisition, the Little Eye Labs team will work closely with Facebook to improve their mobile development and take it to a new level. The startup also jubilantly declared: "This is Facebook's first acquisition of an Indian company, and we are happy to become part of such an incredible team."
Interestingly, the entire Little Eye Labs team will move to Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, from where they can "leverage Facebook's world-class infrastructure." Little Eye Labs released the first official version of the Little Eye analysis tool for Android in April 2013.
The company also reassured its current customers, saying they will receive further information on plans to offer a free version of Little Eye until June 30, 2014.
Little Eye Labs, was founded in May 2012 by Giridhar Murthy, Kumar Rangarajan (also the CEO of the company), Satyam Kandula, and Lakshman Kakkirala. Murthy has worked at Apple; Rangarajan at IBM and HP, Kandula is an IIT Kharagpur alumni and Kakkirala has earlier worked with IBM and Yahoo.
In addition Kumar Rangarajan, who is the current CEO of Little Eye Labs, said that they are excited to work alongside the team at Facebook. "We'll continue on our mission of building analysis tools to aid the development of mobile apps," he added.
As far as the funding for Little Eye Labs is concerned, it received the seed capital from both GSF Superangels and also from Venture East Fund. According to the report that was published earlier by Business Standard, they had received an investment between $100,000 - $200,000 from GSF.
While the terms of the deal were not disclosed, TechCrunch reports Facebook paid between $10 and $15 million to acquire the Indian startup.

Samsung is now reportedly rolling out the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for its flagship smartphone of 2012, the Galaxy S III (GT-I9300) in India.
According to Sammobile, the Galaxy S III's update (build I9300XWUGML4) is available over-the-air (OTA) and via the company's Kies software. The site further claims that the Android 4.3 update for Galaxy S III is about 408MB in size.
Sammobile has also revealed the changelog for the update, which includes Galaxy Gear support; core UI elements updated, now similar to Samsung Galaxy S4; new Samsung keyboard; updated GPU drivers; new lock screen with multiple widgets and improved ripple effect; new Screen modes (like Galaxy S4); Daydream; Driving mode; new actionable notifications; new move to SD card feature; additions in notification centre; revamped settings UI and new Camera mode with Sound and Shoot.
The new Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for Galaxy S III also reportedly introduces new Samsung apps like calculator, contacts, gallery and music apps; full screen support for Samsung apps, and revamped S Voice (similar to the Galaxy S4).
Notably, the Android 4.3 update for Galaxy S III also brings Galaxy Gear support, Samsung's first wearable tech device, making the S III the fourth device to sport that functionality after Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition and Samsung Galaxy S4, as previously reported.
Earlier, Samsung finally resumed the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S III after initially suspending the update following complaints from users who installed the update.
Some users complained about issues like an unresponsive handset, particularly the lock screen; erratic Wi-Fi connectivity; poor battery backup, and a system hanging problem that required the battery to be pulled out to restart the smartphone, after updating the Galaxy S III to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

SBI Gives 2-Years Sabbatical To Female Staff; May Extend To Males
Women employees of SBI can now take two-year sabbatical leave from work for purposes like children’s education.
State Bank of India (SBI) is likely to extend this facility to single male parents as well.
“We have brought in a two-year sabbatical for our women staff in case they want to take it for any purposes like education of their children, taking care of the elderly parents/in-laws,” Arundhati Bhattacharya, the first woman to head SBI, told PTI in an interview.
When asked if the scheme, which she had announced immediately after taking over last October, is in place, she replied in the affirmative.
Many private sector organisations, including banks like ICICI Bank, have such provisions in place, but a state-run bank implementing such a provision is probably new.
Bhattacharya said the bank was planning to extend the sabbatical leave to single-male parents as well, as the bank needs to be sensitive to their special needs.
“At this point we have not done that. But down the line, we might look at single-parents, as well as males who are single-parents. They also need that kind of sensitivity and we should look at that,” she said.
Bhattacharya, who had implemented a system of sabbaticals of six years for women during her previous stint as the head of SBI’s investment banking subsidiary SBI Caps, said she had to limit it two years at the bank in line with the policies followed by the government.
“At SBI Caps, we had done it for a longer period of time. Here, we have done it for two years mainly because the government also has it for two years,” she said.
