Parkash Singh Badal Offers 2-Yr Contractual Employment To EGS Teachers

Parkash Singh Badal Offers 2-Yr Contractual Employment To EGS Teachers

Parkash Singh Badal Offers 2-Yr Contractual Employment To EGS Teachers
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today offered two years of gainful contractual employment to Education Guarantee Scheme/Alternative Innovative Education teachers in the Education department.

Taking part in deliberations with the EGS/AIE Action committee, a body representing these temporary teachers here, the Chief Minister said the state government was committed to solving problems faced by all the employees and unemployed persons.
He said to provide economic assistance to the unemployed EGS/ AIE teachers, the state government would provide gainful employment to them for two years on contract basis in the Education department, an official release here quoting the Chief Minister said.
However, Badal made it clear that the employment would be given for a period of two years during which these unemployed EGS/AIE teachers would have to appear for the Teacher’s Eligibility Test (TET) so as to get regular service in the Education department.
He said the formalities regarding fixing of salary of these teachers during this contractual service would be decided by a high-level committee comprising Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister S K Sandhu, Principal Secretary, Education, and Financial Commissioner, Rural Development, after consultations with the representatives of unemployed EGS/ AIE teachers.
On a demand of the teachers for exempting them from the TET test for providing regular employment in the Education department, Badal said the state government would take up this matter with the Centre soon.
He deputed Principal Secretary, Education, Anjali Bhanwra to hold the meeting with the Secretary of Education at the Centre to find a viable solution to safeguard the interests of these teachers.
The Chief Minister urged the EGS/AIE teachers, holding agitation demanding regularisation of their services, to call off their stir.
He said the state government was fully sympathetic towards them and every step would be taken to bail them out from the crisis.
“Rather than creating inconvenience to the public and even to themselves through such stirs, the EGS/AIE teachers should support the state government for solving their problems in accordance with the stipulated norms,” he said.

How To Assess Leadership Quality In New Hires

How To Assess Leadership Quality In New Hires

How To Assess Leadership Quality In New Hires
Strategic thinking ability, interpersonal skills determine a candidate’s leadership potential.

In order to succeed, organisations need to constantly identify and develop quality talents to create future leaders. Research evidence over the years has demonstrated the importance of using psychometric assessments in leadership recruitment and development, to ensure that the most effective talent is selected. The results which come out of these assessment tests indicate an individual’s potential to demonstrate competence in his/ her role as a leader.
Even though leaders’ personalities might vary widely, there are some specific behaviors that most of the leaders possess.Tonmoy Shingal, co-founder and COO, Mettl shares five key personality traits which must be looked at to determine the leadership potential in a new hire:
Vision and mission: An employee who understands the organisation’s purpose and communicate the same to a group of people such that they can also commit themselves to it can become good leaders.
Bringing strategic change: An employee must be open to developing new insights into situations, questioning conventional approaches and encouraging innovations and new ideas.
Strong interpersonal skills: An employee must maintain good relationships with others by treating others well and fostering an inclusive workplace where diversity and individual differences are valued.
Result driven: An employee who holds one accountable for high quality results and is capable of making well informed and timely decisions even when data is limited, makes for a good leader. They can identify and analyse problems by weighing all available information and generating alternative solutions.
Drive impactful business propositions: An employee who can spearhead crucial projects by building the strongest team of people, developing and building strong alliances, collaborating across boundaries to build strategic relationships and achieve common goals, excels in a leadership role.
In today’s business environment, where there’s difficult competition, to be effective and successful, an individual must possess skills which are required for a leadership position as well. The hiring process thus, has to be extensive and perceptive enough to look out for leadership potential in new hires.

‘Be Passionate To Build Something That Has The Potential To Grow Big’

Interview Of The Day: ‘Be Passionate To Build Something That Has The Potential To Grow Big’

Interview Of The Day: ‘Be Passionate To Build Something That Has The Potential To Grow Big’
Aloke Bajpai, CEO and co-Founder, ixigo.com
If you have the ability to build something valuable or feel motivated constantly, only then you will be able to contribute towards the company’s growth …

During the difficult times, when layoffs were imminent, your whole team decided to take up a 50 per cent salary cut and founders didn’t take anything back home either. What was the reason behind such an amazing team unity?
I think it has to do with a sense of ownership and risk-taking ability amongst all our employees. This feeling comes from a certain level of transparency and trust with which we operate as a team, and the fact that many people also have some tangible ownership in the business (through ESOPs). During those difficult times, we shared what we were going through with the entire team, and we tried to find a solution as a team too, making it “our decision” and not the “company’s decision”. That perspective changed everything. I am not surprised that many of those people went on to start their own companies after a few years.
How different is your office environment from other corporate houses?
It’s very different. You can play table tennis in the morning, have an awesome healthy lunch free of cost and then play Xbox in the evening and noone minds as long as the work gets done. An infinite supply of cookies, beverages, chips, toasts and maggi make sure that your hunger during work is taken care.
We also have flexible working hours and every few months we go for some incredible team outings. Calling people sir or ma’am is prohibited, and there are no cabins for senior people. Debate and disagreements are encouraged and every two months, we do an “All Hands Meet” where everyone can discuss anything about the company openly.
What skills do you look out for – technical and soft skills?
We hire people from all kinds of backgrounds and skill sets. More than the skills we look for adequate amount of passion and energy. Passion for the Internet, passion for technology products, passion for building something valuable, passion for being part of something that has the potential to grow big, and the passion to handle multiple responsibilities. If you have passion, acquiring any skills becomes easy. In addition, we look for ingenuity, and a humble and curious mindset that’s open to experimentation and failure.
How do you generally source your talent?
We have realised that the best people want to work with the best people, so we try to hire only the top one percentile of applications we receive. You don’t need to necessarily be from an IIT to work with us, but its ingenuity and passion that we look for when we interview.
Some words of advice for young aspiring entrepreneurs…
  • Don’t spend more than 20 per cent of your time trying to raise fund. Remember that if you build something valuable, raising money won’t be difficult. Bootstrap until you validate the product-market fit.
  • Marketing spends: No great Internet company got built on the back of paid traffic or marketing spend. You have to validate the product-market fit first. For consumer Internet and mobile, if your product is not growing organically at a minimum of 5 per cent week-on-week, or ~20 per cent month-on-month, you haven’t found something viable yet to spend your marketing money on.
  • Team comes first: Customer is the king, but even before that comes the team. If the team is not happy, customers can never be happy. Entrepreneurs need to ensure that they hire great people and then ensure they are happy, motivated and productive.

7 solid reasons you're not losing weight

7 solid reasons you're not losing weight

Trying to lose weight, but cannot? Here are 7reasons that could be getting in the way
Do you keep piling on the kilos, no matter how many diets you try? The problem may have more to do with your general health than with your food. Here are simple solutions that can help you beat the bulge.
Need more sleep
If you don't sleep well, then the body's hormone axis don't work properly. They affect metabolism and eventually lead to weight gain. Doctors say if you aren't sleeping, your body won't be digesting food normally either. Besides, people suffering from insomnia often snack through the night or drink coffee, which makes the problem worse.
Fix it: Get into a routine by going to bed at regular times and waking up at the same time, even during the weekends. Steer clear of caffeine after 4 pm and try to avoid iPhones or watching TV in your bedroom. Instead, unwind by reading before going to bed.
You're depressed
The problem here is twofold. Most people share an emotional relationship with food. So when depressed, they tend to eat more. However, antidepressants can also stimulate the appetite as, when people feel happier, thanks to the medication, they overeat.
Fix it: It's important not to use an increase in appetite as an excuse to eat the wrong foods. Instead, make sure you always have healthy snacks, such as fruit, nuts and seeds, on hand to stave off those pangs of hunger. If you feel your medication is to blame for your weight gain, then see your GP who might be able to prescribe alternatives.
You're stressed
When adrenaline (the stress hormone) kicks in, the body produces more cortisol, which in turn causes hunger. When you're stressed it's tempting to turn to unhealthy ready meals, high-calorie snacks or alcohol. Stress can also make you feel lethargic. All of these factors take their toll on the waistline.
Fix it: Even in times of stress, eat regular, healthy meals. People who are stressed at work tend to laze around in bed on weekends, but that makes matters worse. Unless you eat within half an hour of waking up, the body will go into fasting mode and store up the last meal in case you don't eat.
Thyroid to blame
Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, slows down the metabolism; many people find they put on weight while it goes undiagnosed. With treatment, the hormones will balance out and weight will soon return to normal.
Fix it: Symptoms of hypothyroidism include tiredness, constipation, aches, dry skin, lifeless hair and feeling cold. If you experience any of these, see your GP for a blood test.
PCOS syndrome
Many overweight women suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS. They have a resistance to insulin, just like people with diabetes, which in the case of PCOS makes it difficult for them to convert the male hormone testosterone in the ovaries into the female hormone oestrogen.
Higher levels of testosterone in the body will make sufferers put on weight and the insulin resistance does the same thing because the body can't utilise the calories it is taking in.
Fix it: Patients are treated with metformin (the same medication given to type 2 diabetics). It reduces the insulin resistance, which rectifies the hormone balance. They are also encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating well and exercising regularly. Other symptoms of PCOS include excessive body hair, irregular periods, infertility, hair loss and acne.
Eating late at night
Studies have shown that people who consume the same calories as others, but eat them an hour or two before going to bed will put on more weight than those who eat earlier. This is because the body is aware that you are not being active, so it stores the calories by turning them into fat. It takes the body longer to convert this stored fat into energy again.
Fix it: Eat your main meal at lunchtime and then have a smaller, lighter meal in the evening, at least three hours before going to bed. The body's ability to digest food reduces as the sun sets.
You've cut out carbs
We all know you need a balanced diet to be healthy but for many of us, cutting out carbs is a sure-fire way to reduce a few kilos quickly. However, when you eliminate something from your diet, the body starts to crave it. Carbs are important building blocks for the body to turn into energy.
Fix it: Eat healthy carbs, such as wholemeal breads, rotis, and brown rice. Avoid diets that ban them

Micromax LapTab first look: Android, Windows and a keyboard cover in one device

Micromax LapTab first look: Android, Windows and a keyboard cover in one device

Micromax LapTab first look: Android, Windows and a keyboard cover in one device
Micromax's LapTab is an Android-cum-Windows based device.

LAS VEGAS: In a first for an Indian phone company, Micromax showed its latest gadget - LapTab - at Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Monday. Micromax has built LapTab in partnership with Intel, which is pushing these hybrid devices capable of supporting both Android and Windows 8.1.

While more companies from across the world will come out with similar tablets - or maybe you can call them laptops that transform - Micromax is among the first companies in the world to prepare this hybrid device.

LapTab will launch in India in February. But the product is ready for the prime time. We spent some time with it to tell you our first impression of LapTab.

In terms of hardware, there are two elements to LapTab. The first is the tablet. It has a 10.1-inch screen with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels. The screen shows decent colours but doesn't match the contrast or richness of colours found on high-end tablets like Nexus 7 or iPad. Brightness too is on the lower side and could be an issue if you use the device under direct sunlight.

The tablet has a plastic body and does feel a bit cheap. But thankfully, there are no loose parts and there is no bending and creaking. Given it is all plastic, LapTab doesn't feel too heavy in hand. In terms of connectivity and ports, there are lots of options. HDMI port is there and so is the micro USB 3.0 port, which is similar to the one found on Galaxy Note 3 and is backward compatible with micro USB 2.0. There is also a slot for microSD card. The tablet supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

In terms of internal hardware, LapTab is well equipped. It is powered by a dual-core Intel N2805 processor. It runs at 1.46GHz and is fast enough, considering it is powering a device that has full version of Windows. The internal storage is 32GB or 64GB. LapTab has 2GB RAM.

The device has a touch sensitive home button with Windows logo.

The other part of the hardware is a keyboard cover. The build quality of cover feels slightly better than the tablet. The keys are nice and offer good amount of 'clicky' feel considering it is a thin cover. This is a pleasant surprise. However the finish of the plastic case attached to the keyboard could have been better. Its corners have sharp edges and taking out or putting the tablet back in the case takes some effort.

There is still a month to go so it is possible that Micromax will fix these minor flaws.

The keyboard and the plastic case connect with a flexible synthetic band, which can also act as a tablet stand, similar to how Apple's official cover for iPad functions. There is a magnet inside this band and it attaches to the back cover of LapTab to form a stand.

While using LapTab, we tried both Android and Windows 8.1. When the device boots up, users get around 10 seconds to make a choice between Android and Windows. If you don't select any OS, then the device boots in the OS that was running on it earlier. If you boot into Android, you get the familiar (almost) stock user interface of Ice Cream Sandwich aka Android 4.2.

The performance of the device is good though lack of tough glass makes the screen feel a bit less touch sensitive. But scrolling through lists and installed apps and pinch-to-zoom during web browsing is mostly smooth. Just to try out the hardware, we ran GeekBench 3, an app that measures theoretical performance of a processor, on LapTab. The device scored 599 points in single core benchmark and 1001 in multi-core. The single core score, which is more important, is above average. It is around 300 points less than the best performing mobile processors like Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. But it is almost 200 points better that the MediaTek processor found in phones like Canvas Turbo score. The multi-core performance is, however, average.

Under Windows too we found that LapTab performs well and without any significant lag. Almost all Windows applications are supported.

To summarize, LapTab is an intriguing product. Its utility is not yet apparent because hybrid devices tend to sacrifice some of the simplicity associated with tablets. Unless we use the device for a longer duration it is difficult to say if it offers more convenience than a standard tablet or a laptop or not.

There is also the matter of price and battery life. Without knowing the price and battery life of LapTab it is difficult to ascertain its value.

Rahul Sharma, Micromax co-founder who is in CES to show LapTab to media, believes that LapTab makes a lot of sense, especially for Indian consumers. "You don't have to carry two devices... you can carry just one. LapTab is a laptop when you want the power of a laptop and it's a tablet when you seek the convenience of a tablet," he says.

While it is easy to understand the merit in LapTab and the concept of the hybrid device, we need to use the device for a bit longer to see if it can hit the home run or not

How Facebook will gain from India's Little Eye Labs

How Facebook will gain from India's Little Eye Labs

How Facebook will gain from India's Little Eye Labs
Little Eye Labs’ technology will help the social network improve its Android code make more efficient, higher-performing apps.

BANGALORE: Bangalore-based Little Eye Labshas become the first Indian firm to be bought by Facebook, going from creation to acquisition in less than 18 months.

Little Eye, which its co-founder Kumar Rangarajan said is "like a microscope for mobile app developers," is being acquired for around Rs 90 crore, or $15 million, becoming the third Asian company (the two others are Malaysian) to join the fold of the world's largest social networking site.

"How much better can it get?" remarked Rangarjan, 38, who is the 'chief ion' of the company, which he says is run by "positively charged particles."

For Facebook, the deal helps in its push towards the mobile environment, and at areally cheap price. An investor in Little Eye said the American company was striking a really good bargain; such a package would have cost much more anywhere else in the world. Little Eye is majority-owned by its team of eight, including the five founders. GSF SuperAngels and VenturEast Tenet had invested a total of about $400,000 (Rs 2.5 crore) in the fledgling company nine months ago.

Indian company's tech to improve Facebook apps
"This is our quickest exit so far," said Sateesh Andra, managing director of VenturEast. His fund is estimated to have made a tenfold return on its investment. Facebook's engineering manager Subbu Subramanian said Little Eye Labs' technology will help the social network improve its Android code make more efficient, higher-performing apps, referring to the Linux-based operating system that runs on most of the world's smartphones.

Rangarajan first met Facebook executives at an annual Google conference in the US six months ago. "They liked the product, and over time the conversation moved to talk of acquisition."

The deal has enthused the startup community in India with many believing that this is only the beginning of many more such transactions.

"This acquisition is validation that talented, early-stage product teams which focus on building innovative technologies can create decent exit valuations in a relatively short time span," said Ravi Gururaj, an angel investor who heads the software product council at industry lobby Nasscom. "The fact that Facebook found it attractive to acquire a small, high-value technology team in Bangalore will cause others to open up to India as a future hunting ground."

Little Eye Labs was founded in August 2012 by Rangarajan and his colleagues from Rational Software. The other co-founders are Giridhar Murthy, Satyam Kandula, Lakshman Kakkirala and Aditya Kulkarni. The entire Little Eye Labs team will move to Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, California.

The closest parallel to what Little Eye Labs does is US-based Crittercism, backed by Google Ventures. It provides solutions which monitor every aspect of mobile app performance.

In the short span of its existence, Little Eye, working out of India, was able to win customers such as Qualcomm, Intel and GE. In 2013, there were 100 M&A deals across India's information technology industry. Of this, 31, whose value was announced, were worth $1,906 million (Rs 11,807 crore), according to research firm Venture Intelligence.

Aashish Bhinde, executive director at investment bank Avendus, was of the view that Little Eye is only one of a few instances where a global company has acquired an Indian firm for its technology. "We need to be careful before calling it out as a major development for the ecosystem. Having said that, one can definitely expect this phenomenon to gather pace over the next 3-5 years."

Rajesh Sawhney, founder of GSF Accelerator, said the acquisition is a "transformative deal" for India and the emerging world. "This validates our core tenet that Indian product startups are now ready for a global play."

Experts hope small-size technology ventures in India will attract the attention of larger companies. Sharad Sharma, co-founder of software product thinktank iSpirt, was also convinced the acquisition is an indication of what to expect this year. "We will see many more sub- $40 million deals," he said.

"Smaller exits are the lifeblood of healthy startup ecosystems like in Israel and the US," said Sharma, who is running a matchmaking programme for product companies

PARIS: The French digital privacy watchdogCNIL is fining Google 150,000 euros ($204,000) for breaking rules on ensuring data privacy

The CNIL agency said on Wednesday that Google's new privacy policy -- which applies to all of its services from e-mail to calendars -- isn't specific enough about how and why it collects data from users and doesn't define how long it keeps such data, among other problems. EU authorities also have said the new privacy policy doesn't follow their rules.

Google has contended that its new policy is simpler and complies with European law.

Since the company did not change its policy as requested, the CNIL said it is fining Google. The agency also asked the search giant to post a statement about the decision on its French home page, google.fr.

In a response, Google said that throughout the process with the CNIL it has made clear its privacy policy "and how it allows us to create simpler, more effective services."

The statement did not say whether it intends to quickly pay up. "We'll be reading their report closely to determine next steps," Google said.

Microsoft CEO race narrows to internal candidates

Microsoft CEO race narrows to internal candidates

Microsoft CEO race narrows to internal candidates
Speculation over Microsoft's succession plans have refocused on internal choices after Ford CEO Alan Mulally took himself off the list.

SEATTLE/NEW YORK: Speculation over Microsoft's succession plans refocused on internal choices on Wednesday, a day after the leading outside candidate, Ford Motor CEO Alan Mulally, took himself off the list of potential CEOs at the world's largest software maker.

A source close to the company said no appointment was likely until the last week of January or in February. The source asked not be identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the process to select a successor to long-time CEO Steve Ballmer, who in August announced his plan to retire.

In late January, many Microsoft executives will be focused on the company's earnings, which are scheduled to be released on January 23. Also, chairman Bill Gates, a key member of the search committee, will be at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

For months, Microsoft watchers had pegged Mulally as the odds-on bet to succeed Ballmer as chief executive at the dominant producer of software for desktops and laptops, which has faltered in making the transition to the fast-growing mobile phone and tablet markets.

But Mulally formally pulled out of the running on Tuesday, telling the Associated Press he would remain at Ford through 2014.

It was unclear whether Mulally's withdrawal from consideration was his decision or Microsoft's. While the company's intentions remained a guessing game, internal candidates now seemed the obvious ones, especially in light of comments by Microsoft about the importance of tech know-how for the top job.

Mulally appeared to be the front runner in the latter part of last year and seemed to be interested in the job, but Microsoft never made him an offer, suggesting that the prevailing mood on the company's board was that he was not right for the job, two sources familiar with the process said.

The sources have also told Reuters that Microsoft is down to a "handful" of candidates, including insiders Satya Nadella, executive vice president of the Cloud & Enterprise group and Tony Bates, executive vice president of Business Development and Evangelism.

Former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, a Microsoft veteran before moving to Nokia, whose mobile phone business Microsoft bought last year, has also been cited as a top candidate, as have one or more outsiders from the tech industry.

As a former Microsoft executive who will soon rejoin the company when the takeover is complete, Elop was mentioned as now "front and centre" of the CEO race in a research note from FBR analyst Daniel Ives, who cited his "previous Microsoft experience and demonstrable expertise in the mobile space."

Evercore analyst Kirk Materne saw it differently, naming Nadella and Bates as the leading internal candidates who "could potentially institute organizational change at a more rapid pace given their insider status."

Microsoft shares, which have gained 36% over the past year, were down 1.2%, while Ford shares gained about the same amount.

'Dark horse' in the running?
Nomura's Rick Sherlund labeled Mulally's withdrawal as "disappointing" in a research note, echoing the sentiment of some other investors and analysts.

Sherlund said it was unclear who the board would turn to, saying he viewed Bates and Nadella as capable, but "more likely to take direction from Microsoft's board rather than redirect the board and take the company in a different direction as we prefer."

If the company does opt to go with an outsider, candidates could include Facebook chief operator officer Sheryl Sandberg, VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger and Pivotal CEO Paul Maritz, Ives said.

Sherlund agreed that Microsoft could still look at a "dark horse" outsider but noted that some tech sector candidates, including Maritz, may have already declined to take the job.

In a blog post on the company's website in December, Microsoft lead independent director John Thompson emphasized the need for a CEO with good tech bona fides and "an ability to lead a highly technical organization and work with top technical talent."

Thompson, who leads the four-member CEO search committee, said at the time he expected the panel to reach a decision "in the early part of 2014.

Apple, Samsung set to discuss patent case settlement in US
Apple and Samsung have agreed to attend a mediation session to be held on or before Feb 19, as they prepare to clash in court in March.
SAN FRANCISCO: Apple and SamsungElectronics have agreed to attend a mediation session to be held on or before February 19, as they prepare to clash in court in March over smartphone patents.

Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung CEO Oh-Hyun Kwon will attend the session with in-house lawyers only, according to a court filing. Their legal teams had met on January 6 to "discuss settlement opportunities," the filing read.

Neither company immediately return messages seeking comment.

Apple and Samsung are embroiled in a legal battle over smartphone patents across several countries that mirrors their global battle for supremacy in the mobile device market.

The technology rivals are facing a March trial date in the United States over Apple's claims that Samsung infringed its patents.

In the last two years, Apple and Samsung have gone to trial twice in San Jose, California federal court, and juries have awarded Apple a total of roughly $930 million.

Apple said in court documents filed in December that its has paid its leading outside law firm approximately $60 million to wage patent litigation against Samsung.

The case is Apple Inc v Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, US District Court, Northern District of California, 11-1846.
