Hands On: Samsung Galaxy NotePro, TabPro & Camera 2

Hands On: Samsung Galaxy NotePro, TabPro & Camera 2

Hands On: Samsung Galaxy NotePro, TabPro & Camera 2
Samsung is going big on televisions at this Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS: Just like most other consumer technology firms, Samsung is going big on televisions at this Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. But at the same time it is also showing a few new tablets and Galaxy Camera 2, which the company had announced before CES.

If the last three years are any indication it is expected that Samsung will launch these products in India very soon, possibly within a month or two. But you don't have to wait that long to know a bit more about these tablets and the new camera. We tried them briefly at CES and here is our first impression of these new Galaxies...

Galaxy NotePro
No screen size is beyond Samsung and in Note Pro it is putting a 12.2-inch screen with 2560 X 1600 pixels resolution. This is 12.2 inches folks. It is more than a foot! On paper it doesn't sound that big but while using it we realized NotePro is huge. In fact it is so big that it is not supposed to be used in portrait mode, something that the home button placed on the left side of the tablet makes clear.

The screen - Samsung calls it Super Clear LCD - shows rich colours and boasts of good touch sensitivity. While the size of NotePro is huge in the world of tablets, it is slim at 7.9mm.

When Samsung uses some special design feature in a tablets or phone, the subsequent devices from the company too have the same feature. On this occasion we are talking about the pleather (leather like) cover in Galaxy Note 3. NotePro features similar cover, which adds to the premium finish of the device.

The NotePro we saw was powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor running at a zippy 2.3GHz. But this information is not listed at the Samsung booth. A little bit of probing revealed that just like other flagship Galaxy devices there will be the version of NotePro that will be powered by Samsung's Octa 5 series processor, which has 8 cores. In India it is likely that Octa core version will be available.

The performance of NotePro is similar to how other flagship Galaxy devices perform. This means mostly smooth but with occasional user interface lags.

NotePro also has support for stylus.
The question is how NotePro is different from Galaxy Note 10.1? Other than the difference in screen size, the main difference between Note Pro and other devices not bestowed with "pro" tag is the software. The NotePro uses a new user interface on top of Android 4.4, which Samsung calls Magazine UX. It consists of large tiles that show live information from apps.

Sound familiar? Well, it is because Windows Phones use a similar tile-based interface, though tiles on Windows Phone devices are not this big.

But there are some crucial differences. The Magazine UX retains all the goodness of Android. This means you can set several homescreens. The notification system remains same, although in Magazine UX the quick action icons are flatter. Different homescreens can be configured with different kind of applications. For example on one homescreen you can have work-related apps. On other you can have your personal apps. Samsung contends this allows a user to access work or personal content in a far easier manner.

We are not so sure at the moment. Currently, all Androids too users can configure different homescreens with different kind of apps. They don't get the "magazine like" user interface but they can set widgets to glance at information.

Samsung is also putting a RemotePC app and an app that helps a user carry out web meetings in its Pro devices.
The Magazine UX looks good but it doesn't particularly add much to what you can do on an Android device. That said, there is one feature that is unique to NotePro and could be really useful: multi-window with support for opening up to 4 apps.

Currently, on a Samsung device, you can only open 2 windows. On NotePro, you can have four open apps on the screen for better multitasking.

Talking of multitasking, in Magazine UX Samsung has changed the way recent apps are shown. They are shown as a thumbnail strip on the bottom of the screen. This is probably specific to tablets and makes sense given their big size.

Galaxy TabPro
Available in three sizes - 12.-2-inch screen, 10.1-inch screen and 8.4-inch screen - TabPro is almost similar to NotePro. At least the design, user interface, bundled applications and the Magazine UX user interface is same.

The big difference is that there is no stylus support for TabPro devices. The smaller TabPro devices (10.1-inch and 8.4-inch) also lack support for multi-window feature that can show four windows on the screen. On smaller Pro devices only two windows can be shown at the screen simultaneously.

In terms of performance, we didn't notice any difference between NotePro and TabPro devices. And that is understandable given that they all have same hardware.

Galaxy Camera 2
Successor to Galaxy Camera that launched last year, the Camera (version 2) follows the same design. But because it is a Galaxy device and it is launching after Note 3 launched, it has got a layer of faux leather on top of its plastic body. There is also a bit of metal in the camera. The build quality, finishing and style is better than what Camera (version 1) possessed.

Camera 2 features a 16MP image sensor and 21X optical zoom. The device is not as compact as some other point-and-shoot cameras pout there, but it can be squeeze into a jeans pocket.

The highlight of Camera 2 is its large 4.8-inch screen, which shows fantastic colours and contrast. The device is powered by a 1.6GHz quad-core processor (Exynos 4412), 2GB RAM, and 8GB internal storage. There is support for addition an external storage card so 8GB is more than enough.

In terms of software not much has changed in the new camera. It still sports a slightly modified version of Android. Click on camera icon puts a user into device into the camera mode, which is similar to the camera app found on Galaxy devices. It is incredibly easy to use interface. Tapping on the home button, brings a user back to the main Android homescreen. Almost all Android apps can be run on Camera 2.

Overall it is not majorly different from Galaxy Camera (version 1). The image quality-wise things may have changed for better but that can't be checked unless we use the device at least a few days

The curious case of Virender Sehwag

The curious case of Virender Sehwag

The curious case of Virender Sehwag
Virender Sehwag appeared to redefine the rule book and conquer without trying too hard. When the runs dried up, this same approach seemed as inscrutable as his batting technique. (TOI Photo)

NEW DELHI: Does Virender Sehwag have the enthusiasm to reinvent himself for one more shot at international glory? Or will he, content with past achievements, simply choose to fade away from public memory?

As the curtain closes on a horror run in the Ranji Trophy for this most unique of openers, the question on everybody's lips is whether Indian cricket has lost Sehwag's services for good.

If that's the case, it's bad news for Indian cricket in particular and Test cricket in general. It's worth a reminder what a colossus of batting Sehwag actually was. Numbers don't do his impact justice, though they are well-known and carry considerable weight.

For a bit more than a decade, Sehwag defined all that was joyous in Indian cricket, his merry mincemeat of bowlers the triumphal howl of a fearless modern master.

Sehwag appeared to redefine the rule book and conquer without trying too hard. When the runs dried up, this same approach seemed as inscrutable as his batting technique.

Now, this bespectacled 35-year-old's gifts - an amazing hand-eye co-ordination and bat speed which formed the cornerstone of his art - seem to have dwindled as rapidly as they once blossomed, leaving everyone craving for more.

This season in the Ranji Trophy, the bat in his hand has rebelled. He has averaged 19.50 from 13 innings, with a highest of 56 against Vidarbha. He has failed to convert starts.

That Delhi chose to play on seaming tracks hasn't helped and he has often groped for answers against ordinary bowlers. Yet, there have been all-too-brief moments of fluidity which suggest all is not lost.

Sehwag appeared confused about his place in the batting order too, having batted at No. 4, No. 3, No. 5, No. 6 until coming full circle and returning to opening the innings, a role which will forever define his place in cricketing history.

There were rumours emanating from the Delhi camp that he was laidback, that he lacked the intent and patience necessary to carve big scores and worm his way back into the spotlight, that he was hell bent on playing the swashbuckler. But again, those who have seen him at his best don't agree.

"That's always the way he has batted. He is very focused on his training methods; it's just that they are different from the norm. He knows best what works for him. You don't get to be Virender Sehwag by just walking to the crease," says former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar, once the chairman of selectors who gambled - on skipper Anil Kumble's insistence - on an off-form Sehwag back in 2008. That move reignited the spark in Sehwag but Vengsarkar isn't sure if he would make a similar decision now.

"I don't know, that was six years back," says Vengsarkar, "Batsmen who rely on pure technique don't look as exciting but they come out of poor form faster than those who rely on hand-eye coordination, which fades with falling eyesight and age. Some say a shoulder surgery has reduced his bat speed, but I'm not sure. Is Sehwag motivated enough? His batting can be best described by a word we often use for bowlers: rhythm. He has to be in rhythm, and for that he has to play as much as possible. Once the rhythm is back, he will rediscover the confidence. And he must open, or it gives off bad vibes."

Vengsarkar dismissed Sehwag's poor run this Ranji season by saying, "Maybe for him, runs at the domestic level are never an indication of how he will perform on the international stage. But they help."

Delhi selector Chetan Chauhan says, "He is not batting with conviction. He must continue to open, since the new ball and the lack of close-in fielders suits his strokeplay in the longer format. He is trying to adjust; it's not that he is going just slam-bang. He knows with age one's game must change. The Sehwag of old may not return but he is still a good-enough batsman for the top level. This sort of poor season comes in every cricketer's life. Sehwag has had no luck. With a bit of luck and some runs, the hunger can return."

Delhi skipper Gautam Gambhir says, "He's one of the greatest. This is a phase. Eventually it's up to Sehwag as well. You have to keep working hard and he is doing that. His methods of preparation are his own, not for less gifted batsmen."

Gambhir feels opening is all about mental toughness but the road back into Team India may seem an uphill task for Sehwag right now. Youngsters in his place have performed and no one seems to be missing him, at least for the moment. Once chirpy and humorous in public, Sehwag seems to be shunning the limelight too.

It's not pleasing to see Sehwag struggle. Maybe, he is frustrated by a suddenly ageing body. Maybe he lacks a stage and the domestic arena isn't motivation enough. Hopefully, all Sehwag needs to do is decide if he wants to rule the cricketing world all over again.

Nokia Android phone’s specs, photos leaked
The specifications of Nokia Normandy have been leaked courtesy the database of benchmark website Antutu.

NEW DELHI: The rumours of Nokia's Android phone refuse to die, even as the company's board has given approval to the sale of its handset unit to Microsoft. Normandy, the budget Android smartphone that Nokia was developing, has once again - with photos as well as specifications.

The specifications of Nokia Normandy have been leaked courtesy the database of benchmark website Antutu, posted on Chinese microblogging website Weibo. The handset, codenamed A110, has display resolution of 854x480 and runs on Android 4.4.1 (KitKat). Other features include a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 5MP rear camera. A NokiaPowerUser report says that the phone will have a 4-inch display and will another variant will be codenamed RM-980.

Twitter users EVLeaks, which has been behind several accurate leaks in the past, has said posted three photos of the phone detailing the user interface. According by the photos, the phone will carry the same look as the Lumia and revamped Asha range of handsets. The screenshot shows two signal bars, suggesting a dual-sim model.

Instead of the three-key layout of standard Android phone (Home, Back and Task Switcher), there will be a single hardware button below the screen, similar to the one seen in the new Asha feature phones.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z1S flagship variants launched at CES 2014

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z1S flagship variants launched at CES 2014

sony-xperia-z1s-launch-ces-635.jpg
Sony has launched two new Xperia smartphones at CES 2014, the Xperia Z1 Compact, the much-awaited international mini-variant of the flagship smartphone, Xperia Z1 and the long-rumoured Xperia Z1S, which we now learn is a full-sized Xperia Z1-variant exclusive to T-Mobile in US.
The Japanese handset giant has not revealed the pricing of the Xperia Z1 Compact as of now. However, the company has revealed that the Xperia Z1 Compact will be placed between the Xperia Z1 and the previous Xperia Z smartphone variants.
While, Sony has announced that the Xperia Z1S will be available in US through T-Mobile starting January 22 and will be priced at $22 per month for two years or will be available at $603 outright (without contract), this translates to roughly Rs. 37,500.
Notably, the Sony Xperia Z1S comes with similar specifications to the Xperia Z1, though the former comes with a higher IP58 waterproof rating, which means the device, can be submerged into water for more time and depth.
The Sony Xperia Z1S runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box with Sony's custom skin on top, similar to the one seen on the Xperia Z1. The latest smartphone is powered by 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm MSM8974 processor along with 2GB of RAM. There is 32GB of inbuilt storage, although no word on expandable storage. The Sony Xperia Z1S comes with 5-inch full-HD Triluminos display powered by Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2. The highlight of the Xperia Z1S, much like the flagship smartphone, is the 20.7-megapixel Exmor RS sensor alongside BIONZ image processor engine and pulsed LED flash. It also includes a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. Like to the Xperia Z1, the device comes with 3000mAh battery. Connectivity options on the Xperia Z1 include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, Xperia Link and 3G.
On the other hand, the mini-variant of Xperia Z1 dubbed Xperia Z1 Compact features identical specifications to the Sony Xperia Z1 f introduced under Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo's winter smartphone line-up in October, 2013.
sony-xperia-z1-compact-635.jpg
The Xperia Z1 Compact runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and is manufactured by a single aluminium frame with tampered glass on back and front panel. It is powered by a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm MSM8974 processor along with 2GB of RAM, much like the elder sibling, Xperia Z1.
The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact features a 4.3-inch Triluminos HD (720x1280) display with X-Reality for Mobiles. It comes with 16GB of inbuilt storage which is further expandable up to 64GB with the help of microSD card.
The highlight of the Xperia Z1 Compact is again the 20.7-megapixel Exmor RS sensor alongside BIONZ image processor engine and pulsed LED flash, as seen in Xperia Z1. It also includes a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. Connectivity options on the device include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS/ GLONASS and NFC. The Xperia Z1 Compact packs a 2300mAh battery with STAMINA mode and is waterproof and dust-proof smartphone, like other high-end Xperia smartphones.

Michael Bay walks off stage during Samsung Curved UHD TV event at CES 2014

Michael Bay walks off stage during Samsung Curved UHD TV event at CES 2014

Michael-Bay-CES-Samsung-UHD-TV-635-telegraph.jpg
Autobot warriors in "Transformers" films stand firm in the face of pressure, but the director of the blockbuster action films bolted when a teleprompter failed him at a Samsung press event.
Michael Bay joined a Samsung executive on stage on Monday to extol the wonders of a new curved 105-inch ultra high-definition television at this week's Consumer Electronics Show.
He got as far as saying that he got to dream for a living and that his job was to "take people on an emotional ride" before being forced to go off script. He stumbled at the prospect.
Samsung executive vice president Joe Stinziano prompted Bay, albeit to no avail, by asking his thoughts on how the curved television screen might enhance viewing.
Bay said he was sorry and then stormed off stage in an apparent huff, prompting one of the hundreds of journalists in the packed audience to quip that it "must have been a Decepticon sensor."
"Transformers" fans know the Decepticons as the fearsome enemies of the heroe Autobots, sentient robots that can convert into any of a wide array of vehicles.
"Wow! I just embarrassed myself at CES," Bay said in a post at his website michaelbay.com.
"I got so excited to talk, that I skipped over the Exec VP's intro line and then the teleprompter got lost. Then the prompter went up and down - then I walked off. I guess live shows aren't my thing."
Bay referred to the new curved television as "awesome" and said he has put "Transformers" footage in a special screen experience that will be used to promote the sets around the world.
Unfortunately for South Korea-based Samsung, Bay's meltdown became the highlight of the press event, and may unintentionally mar the introduction of the curved television.

Netgear launches NeoMediacast HDMI dongle to compete with Chromecast

Netgear launches NeoMediacast HDMI dongle to compete with Chromecast

NETGEAR-NTV300D-635x475.jpg
Netgear is bringing its own wireless media streaming dongle to the market, with a few tricks that should give it an advantage over Google's Chromecast. The NeoMediacast NTV300D is about the size of a large USB pen drive and plugs directly into a TV's HDMI port. Users can stream online content via 802.11ac Wi-Fi or media from their Android devices via Bluetooth 4.0. Additionally, the device has a Micro-USB port and microSD card slot for users to plug their physical storage into.
Miracast is supported for local streaming at up to 1080p, and users won't be able to circumvent digital copyright protection measures, but there's no information yet about which specific content service providers will be supported at launch, and which countries these services will work in.
Netgear seems to be positioning the device as a set-top box replacement which service providers can provide to subscribers. The dongle's software can be customised using the Android SDK, raising the possibility that content or distribution companies can use it as a gateway to their own media streaming services. A press statement released by Netgear reads: "With NeoMediacast, service providers can develop and operate a complete media streaming solution that supports their multi-screen video initiatives, where quick time-to-market is critical... service providers can leverage the Android apps they have already developed to support linear TV on tablets and phones."
The NeoMediacast might not even be sold directly to consumers. Netgear says the device will "become available for service provider deployments in the first half of 2014", but there's no word on price or end-user availability. Stay in touch with the latest from CES 2014, via our CES page.

Snapdeal launches free same-day delivery to take on Amazon and Flipkart

Snapdeal launches free same-day delivery to take on Amazon and Flipkart

Snapdeal-Express-Delivery-635.jpg
Following in the footsteps of Amazon India and Flipkart, online retailer Snapdeal has launched its version of guaranteed same-day shipping, called 'Express Delivery'. The service will initially only be available in Delhi-NCR (specifically Delhi and Gurgaon), but will soon be expanded to cities such as Bangalore and Mumbai.

Snapdeal's Express Delivery service seems to be a little more limited than what is offered by its counterparts, with the service only available on select products, which will be marked prominently on the website. However, unlike its counterparts, the Snapdeal Express Delivery service is free (for now) and offers same day delivery, compared to next-day delivery offered by the likes of Flipkart and Amazon.

Flipkart's 'In-a-day guarantee' one-day shipping service is chargeable at Rs. 90 per item. Flipkartintroduced the service in the second week of December, and as of date it is available in seven cities across the country. Orders placed before 6PM qualify for delivery the next business day.

Amazon India, the Indian arm of the largest online retailer in the world, had started its 'guaranteed one-day delivery' service for six cities in the first week of December, charging Rs. 99 per order. Amazon's cut-off for next-day delivery is midnight in Mumbai and Pune, and 3PM in other cities.

Introducing the service, Saurabh Goyal, VP- Supply Chain Operations at Snapdeal, said, "With the increasing competition in e-commerce space, delivery has become an essential factor after price. Keeping up with our company motto of providing the widest assortment of goods and the best services we have managed to evolve our supply chain system to such an extent that we can now offer this service with ease."

Sony unveils PlayStation Now game streaming service for mobiles, tablets, TVs

Sony unveils PlayStation Now game streaming service for mobiles, tablets, TVs

sony-ps4-ces-ap-635x475.jpg
Sony on Tuesday announced a hotly-anticipated streaming game service along with the news that it sold more than 4.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles by the start of this year.
PlayStation Now, set to begin a test phase this month and launch in the United States mid-year, promised to let gamers access blockbuster titles in the Internet "cloud" and play them on an array of devices intended to expand over time.
The new streaming game service will provide PlayStation gamers access to games they love from prior generation consoles and grow to extend play to other Internet linked devices such as smartphones and tablets, according to Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House.
A lament of gamers shifting to new-generation consoles is that the devices don't play games tailored for earlier models. Sony's service will begin by providing hit titles for play on PS4 and PS3 consoles, and then the Japanese entertainment titan's handheld Vita game devices.
"We are thrilled to deliver entertainment experiences only possible from PlayStation through our new streaming game service," said House.
Sony was demonstrating the service on some Bravia smart television models at its booth at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which will continue here through Friday.
The goal of the service is to let people "play where ever they want, when ever they want" and incorporates technology from cloud gaming company Gaikai, which Sony bought in 2012 for $380 million.
Gamers will be able to rent titles at PlayStation Now or pay for monthly subscriptions to the service, according to House.
House updated PlayStation 4 sales figures to say that 4.2 million consoles had been sold as of December 28 of last year. Sony launched the PS4 in on November 15.
Sony Entertainment Network will begin testing later this year a cloud-based television service in the United States, according to House.
The service will combine popular live television programs with a large library of on-demand content, according to Sony. Shows or films will stream to an array of devices, including tablets or smartphones made by competitors.
House heralded the new television service as a natural evolution of Sony's moves to combine strengths in entertainment, gaming and consumer electronics.
Pricing details for the gaming and television services were not revealed.

The Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo, rumoured to be a new mid-range smartphone under company's Grand series has been unofficially 'confirmed' via leaked internal documents.
GSMArena has posted a few leaked internal documents related to the Samsung's yet-to-be-announced Galaxy Grand Neo which reveal complete specifications of the device. According to the leaked Galaxy Grand Neo documents, the smartphone is said to be priced at 299 Euros in Europe after tax, which translates to roughly Rs. 25,500. However, there is no word on the availability of the alleged Galaxy Grand Neo.
The alleged Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo is said to run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box with company's TouchWiz on top. The smartphone is likely to be powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core A7 processor (unspecified chipset) with 1GB of RAM. Further, the leaked internal documents suggest that the rumoured Galaxy Grand Neo sports a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, alongside VGA front-facing camera. The smartphone is said to come with 8GB of inbuilt storage with expandable storage support.
Connectivity options on the alleged Galaxy Grand Neo include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, GPS/ AGPS, 3G, GLONASS, and Micro-USB. The smartphone is rumoured to boast dimensions 143.7x77.1x9.6mm. The smartphone is said to pack a 2100mAh battery.
Notably, the leaked specifications of the alleged Galaxy Grand Neo seem to fit the previously-rumoured Galaxy Grand Lite, and might very well be the same phone.
Samsung finally launched the Galaxy Grand 2 for the Indian market in December last year. However, the company is yet-to-announce the final price of the smartphone, though it did give a tentative price range between Rs. 22,900 and Rs. 24,900.

Facebook's acquisition of Little Eye Labs, a Bangalore-based start-up has been rumoured for a while. The startup, which builds mobile app analysis tools for app developers and testers, announced on Wednesday that the acquisition had been completed.

According to the post titled 'transition' on the website of Little Eye Labs, after the acquisition, the Little Eye Labs team will work closely with Facebook to improve their mobile development and take it to a new level. The startup also jubilantly declared: "This is Facebook's first acquisition of an Indian company, and we are happy to become part of such an incredible team."
Interestingly, the entire Little Eye Labs team will move to Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, from where they can "leverage Facebook's world-class infrastructure." Little Eye Labs released the first official version of the Little Eye analysis tool for Android in April 2013.
The company also reassured its current customers, saying they will receive further information on plans to offer a free version of Little Eye until June 30, 2014.
Little Eye Labs, was founded in May 2012 by Giridhar Murthy, Kumar Rangarajan (also the CEO of the company), Satyam Kandula, and Lakshman Kakkirala. Murthy has worked at Apple; Rangarajan at IBM and HP, Kandula is an IIT Kharagpur alumni and Kakkirala has earlier worked with IBM and Yahoo.
In addition Kumar Rangarajan, who is the current CEO of Little Eye Labs, said that they are excited to work alongside the team at Facebook. "We'll continue on our mission of building analysis tools to aid the development of mobile apps," he added.
As far as the funding for Little Eye Labs is concerned, it received the seed capital from both GSF Superangels and also from Venture East Fund. According to the report that was published earlier by Business Standard, they had received an investment between $100,000 - $200,000 from GSF.
While the terms of the deal were not disclosed, TechCrunch reports Facebook paid between $10 and $15 million to acquire the Indian startup.
