Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to be showcased at CES 2014

Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to be showcased at CES 2014

samsung_galaxy_camera_2.jpg
Samsung has announced Galaxy Camera 2, successor to the Android-based Galaxy Camera that it announced at IFA last year. Samsung will be showcasing the camera at CES in Las Vegas next week.
Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 comes with a 16.3 effective megapixel 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor and 21x optical zoom. The Android 4.3-based camera is powered by a 1.6GHz quad-core processor alongside 2GB RAM. The Galaxy Camera 2 comes with 8GB internal storage (2.8GB user accessible), which is expandable by up to 64GB via microSD card. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS, NFC and Bluetooth.
Interestingly, there's no mention of 3G/ LTE connectivity, so one wonders if Samsung has given up on having a SIM slot, which was present in the original Galaxy Camera. Samsung did launch a cheaper, Wi-Fi only variant of the Galaxy Camera later, so the Galaxy Camera 2 follows on those footsteps. There's no word if Samsung will launch a Galaxy Camera 2 variant with cellular connectivity at a later date.
"Consumers love the Galaxy Camera, and this next-generation version was designed to improve on the successful predecessor, with upgraded and new features that will enhance the photography experience," said Myoung Sup Han, Executive Vice President and Head of the Imaging Business Team at Samsung Electronics. "The result is a more powerful and portable device which continues to embrace the public's passion for the social features of smartphones, yet also provides superior image control and quality."
Samsung is silent on pricing and availability details for the Galaxy Camera 2, but one can expect to find more on the same at CES in Las Vegas next week.

Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X review

Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X review

Spice-smart-flo-mettle-5x-front-panel.jpg
One of the most remarkable trends in the mobile industry over the past year has been the rise of the budget Android smartphones. A person looking for a dual-SIM phone today has literally an ocean of options to choose from.
The budget segment of the Indian smartphone market has seen a slew of new releases of late, with a number of players like Micromax, Karbonn, Spice, Xolo, LG and Samsung among others. Nokia also makes it to the list with its range of popular and affordable Windows Phone 8 devices, such as the Lumia 520 and Lumia 720.
Spice's latest hat throw into the budget smartphone ring, Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X, supposedly delivers an high-end experience for less than Rs. 7,000. But how well does it fare in reality? We find out, in our review.
Design/ Build
The Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X has relatively standard smartphone looks. It is far from an ultra-slim smartphone and despite being primarily made of plastic, it is on the heavier side. The Smart Flo Mettle 5X weighs 190 grams, which is definitely not lightweight - when one holds the device for longer periods, it does feel a bit bulky.
Spice-smart-flo-mettle-5x-earpiece-grill.jpg
On the first look, the design of the Smart Flo Mettle 5X seems to be reminiscent of Nokia's dated E-series phones, especially the rear panel. The Smart Flo Mettle 5X's rear panel is removable and includes a metal part in the middle, which is covered with rich plastic, better than the material used on the front panel.
On the other hand, the front panel of Smart Flo Mettle 5X is like any other budget Android smartphone, with the rounded edges making the smartphone fairly comfortable to hold with one hand, considering the screen size, but hard to work with just the thumb, of course.
The front of the Smart Flo Mettle 5X is dominated by the 5-inch display with three capacitive keys lined up below the screen for settings, home and back. However, the buttons are not always backlit, and go off after a while, which we felt was odd. We initially struggled to locate the three buttons below the display for use when it turned off, in situations where there was no light in the room.
In addition, the Smart Flo Mettle 5X also features a notification red light below the three soft touch keys, which lights up when there is a missed call, message, and email. It's worth pointing out that the red notification light is very much visible.
Spice-smart-flo-mettle-5x-back-panel.jpg
The Smart Flo Mettle 5X's back panel houses an 8-megapixel camera along with a LED flash and the speaker grill is located at the bottom left of the rear panel. There's Spice branding visible on the back of the phone.
The budget phablet comes with dimensions of 148.5x78.9x10.4mm. The Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X phone only comes in White. There is a Micro-USB port accompanied by a 3.5mm audio headphone port on the top of the device. The power key is located on the right side and the volume rocker key on the left side of the Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X.
As with most budget Android devices, there is no dedicated camera button on the Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X either. As of now, almost all Android handset manufacturers do not include a dedicated camera key, except Sony.
The phone has a removable back cover and opening it reveals the battery compartment with dual-SIM card slot and a microSD card slot. The dual-SIM cards are not hot-swappable because they are placed adjacent to the Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X's battery, while the microSD card can be removed without switching off the device.
Overall, we found the Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X to be a reasonably good looking device, although we wish it had been a bit lighter and would have had a textured back. The glossy metal back panel on the Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X, like that of the Pinnacle FHD, tends to slip out of hand, when we used the device for prolonged period.
Display
The Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X comes with a 5-inch display that has a resolution of 480x854 pixels (FWVGA), which is very much a budget affair. The pixel density stands at 233ppi, which is not too bad for an affordable device. Considering the price at which the Smart Flo Mettle 5X comes, it offers decent value, while it's no surprise that the smartphone's visuals are not as sharp as high-end devices.
Spice-smart-flo-mettle-5x-horizontal-display.jpg
The major issue on the display front was the Smart Flo Mettle 5X's rather dull output - we used the smartphone with brightness set at full, and were left unsatisfied. The screen is also extremely reflective. Trying to use the Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X on a sunny day can prove to be annoying, with brightness set on auto or even full.
Colour reproduction and viewing angles of the Smart Flo Mettle 5X's display are not great. We also observed that the display of the Smart Flo Mettle 5X picked up smudges easily and is also a fingerprint magnet; we had a tough time getting rid of them.
During our review period, we noticed slight distortion along the edges of the Smart Flo Mettle 5X's display while watching videos or even viewing images. Thankfully, we found the touch response of the screen to be decent.
Camera
The Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X sports an 8-megapixel rear autofocus camera and also includes a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera.
Spice-smart-flo-mettle-5x-rear-camera.jpg
Keeping in mind that the Smart Flo Mettle 5X is a sub Rs. 10,000 device, we found its camera performance to be par for the segment. The 8-megapixel rear camera takes images with some digital noise, and there is also a loss of detail, even in well-lit conditions. The images clicked by Smart Flo Mettle 5X are good enough for uploading to social networks like Facebook, Twitter etc, but not for much else.
In low-light conditions, images lost their sharpness. This is where the LED flash comes into play, and does manage to fulfil its intended purpose, lighting the scene evenly. The Smart Flo Mettle 5X can record VGA videos (640x480 pixels) too, but the quality is nothing great, with visible noise, and some stuttering.
Spice-smart-flo-mettle-5x-camera-sample-shot.jpg
The 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera on the Smart Flo Mettle 5X comes in handy for selfies though the quality is nothing to be write home about.
The Smart Flo Mettle 5X's camera app comes with a number of shooting modes, including auto, HDR, Panorama, smile shot, landscape and face-detection. The camera app of Smart Flo Mettle 5X also allows users to adjust sharpness, saturation, hue, ISO, and brightness settings.
Software/ Interface
The Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box. However, we must point out that the smartphone runs a highly-tweaked version of Android Jelly Bean. Spice seems to have taken the benchmark for other domestic handset makers a step further with its attempt.
Spice-smart-flo-mettle-5x-screenshot1.jpg
In fact, when we first switched on the Smart Flo Mettle 5X, we were not sure if the device was even running Android. If we could remove the Google services and the Play Store app, the Smart Flo Mettle 5X would look like it was running a different operating system, similar to Xiaomi's MiUi interface, which is based on Android. Starting from unlocking the device to searching for apps, the Smart Flo Mettle 5X has a complete makeover.
The Smart Flo Mettle 5X's lockscreen has four panes, one includes the music player controls; second includes weather updates of the current city; third is the main screen which, if slid upwards unlocks the device, and the last houses the camera app launcher.
However, one can get rid of the default Spice lockscreen by opting for Android's original lockscreen, from which users can slide from left to right for unlocking the device, while sliding right to left launches the camera app.
The Smart Flo Mettle 5X's OS doesn't offer the traditional Android home screen - app launcher structure, but in its place, it offers a little similar to the iPhone's and Gionee Elife E7's layout - the Smart Flo Mettle 5X's homescreen is also the app launcher.
We assume for users switching to the Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X from another Android phone, the arrangement would be a little unsettling for the initial period, but otherwise it might not be much of a problem.
The Smart Flo Mettle 5X can have up to nine homescreen panels, which can be populated with app icons. Notably, the Smart Flo Mettle 5X doesn't support widgets. Thankfully, the weather and time widgets are accessible from the lockscreen.
The notification tray on the Smart Flo Mettle 5X features a settings shortcut, a clear all notifications button, along with expandable notifications (expanded with the two finger pull gesture). It features the same setting toggle shortcuts that are found in stock Android for quick access to airplane mode, battery status, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, data connection, data usage, audio profiles, brightness, screen backlight timeout, and auto rotation.
The Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X also offers different set colour accent themes that can change the look of the menu lists and some other elements. The phone also features 'smart motion' gesture controls, such as the option of 'flip to mute' incoming calls.
Spice-smart-flo-mettle-5x-bbm-app.jpg
There are plethora of pre-installed apps like Facebook, Hungama, Numbuzz, Super power saver, OLX and WhatsApp. Also on board is the popular instant chat service, BBM. Recently, BlackBerry announced that its cross-platform messaging app, BBM, would be preinstalled on a number of Android smartphones from domestic brands, including Spice starting December 2013.
For cloud computing fans, there is Spice Cloud preloaded on the Smart Flo Mettle 5X, offering 2GB of storage free for the first few initial months. Users need to log-in to the app for using the cloud service.
Spice-smart-flo-mettle-5x-screenshot2.jpg
The Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X is secured with Netqin Antivirus that takes care of malware attacks; however, it is only available for a limited time. After this, users will need to switch to a premium account. For editing Microsoft's Office files and documents, there is the QuickOffice preinstalled. Spice also preloads a 'power saver mode' on the Smart Flo Mettle 5X that limits processor utilization, and turns off data sync and various connectivity options when the phone's screen is locked for five minutes.
The three capacitive buttons for settings, home and back help in navigating through the Smart Flo Mettle 5X, with the home button also doubling up as an app switcher/ task manager on long press.
Overall, Spice's attempt to give its latest smartphone a revamped UI is indeed a good sign for future devices, although we felt that the company needs to give some finishing touches to some features, like the unlocking the phone, which are annoying in their difference initially, such as when an upward slide launches the camera. Also, searching for a particular app on the Smart Flo Mettle 5X's homescreen becomes a tedious exercise.
Performance/ Battery Life
The Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X is powered by a dual-core 1.3GHz processor (unspecified chipset) along with 512MB of RAM. Despite the modest processor speed and limited amount of RAM on the Smart Flo Mettle 5X, it feels pleasingly responsive to use. The homescreens flip and scroll in a lively way and apps load acceptably quickly.
However, the lack of grunt is noticeable in the Smart Flo Mettle 5X's browser as it can sometimes be slow to render pages, and it often finds heavy graphic games like Temple Run 2, Nun Attack, and Plants Vs Zombies 2 demanding to deal with.
On the other hand, the experience of playing some popular but not so heavy graphics games like Fruit Ninja, Subway Surfers and Angry Birds Friends on the Smart Flo Mettle 5X was acceptable.
Considering the fact that the smartphone comes with a scanty 512MB of RAM, it is not surprising the multi-tasking experience suffers and we experienced lags. It includes 4GB of inbuilt storage out of which roughly 2GB is user-available, although it supports expandable storage up to 32GB via microSD card.
Spice-smart-flo-mettle-5x-removable-cover.jpg
Call quality on the Smart Flo Mettle 5X was excellent on both the SIMs throughout our time with the phone. The phone supports dual-SIM functionality with GSM+GSM. It was also able to get a GPS lock easily while using the Maps app. It's worth pointing out that the Smart Flo Mettle 5X supports 2G network only, and does not support 3G network, which can be considered a big disadvantage for the device. Now, smartphones with 3G support are available in the Indian market at Rs. 6,000.
The native music app on the Smart Flo Mettle 5X can play MP3, MIDI, AAC, AMR and WAV audio formats. The music app in itself looks quite basic but it offers equalizer presets. The quality of audio through the loudspeakers is very good. However, the same cannot be said about the supplied earphones with the smartphone.
Further, we were not able to play full-HD video clips on the Smart Flo Mettle 5X's native video player, but it supported formats like .AVI and .MP4, natively. Using a popular third-party player, we were able to play full-HD and HD videos, however, notably, .MKV videos played without sound.
It packs an 1800mAh battery that according to the company, can deliver up to 4 hours of talktime and up to 150 hours standby time. In our Smart Flo Mettle 5X battery rundown test, we found the battery life to be very impressive.
We were able to get around a day and a half out of the Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X before it needed to be topped up with juice, which is better than usual for most budget Android phones.
Spice-smart-flo-mettle-5x-homescreen.jpg
We charged the Smart Flo Mettle 5X in the morning, and with medium to heavy usage, including 1 to 1.5 hours of phone calls; two email accounts configured on the smartphone with push notifications; screen set at maximum brightness; playing some music and watching our favourite video clips through YouTube; Twitter and WhatsApp notifications, the Smart Flo Mettle 5X easily lasted more than a day with the battery status showing 40 percent at the end of the first day.
It's also worth pointing out that we were primarily using mobile data (GPRS and EDGE), and occasionally connected the phone to Wi-Fi. The Smart Flo Mettle 5X was hooked to a 2G network for most of the time. Altering these settings might help in running the Smart Flo Mettle 5X for a longer duration, depending on your usage pattern.
Verdict
The Spice Smart Flo Mettle 5X is a budget phablet that is capable of handling most routine tasks and does so without burning a hole in consumer's pocket. Yes, the phone does not have a sleek profile but offers acceptable build in the pricing, and comes packed with what we thought was decent hardware for its price point.
Considering that this is an entry level smartphone, the Smart Flo Mettle 5X performs decently. We did have our complaints with the phone however, such as the low-resolution display, not very user-friendly interface, and the lack of 3G support. Yes, in a perfect world, we would have liked a more stock Android experience, a better camera and a better resolution display. But all said and done, we cannot complain about what is being offered when you consider the Rs. 6,500 price of the Smart Flo Mettle 5X.
Those looking for alternatives can try out the Nokia Asha 503 dual-SIM which supports 3G networks or the Xolo A500S which again supports 3G network and is available in the same price segment. One can also go for the Samsung Galaxy Star Pro which is again available in the same price range. However, it too does not support 3G connectivity.

2014 May Be The Sunshine Year For Young Professionals

2014 May Be The Sunshine Year For Young Professionals

2014 May Be The Sunshine Year For Young Professionals
Professionals with a technical degree and a working experience of a few years are expected to be on high demand going forward.
Kanchana Dwarakanath, TimesJobs.com Bureau
If you are an engineering professional working for a small salary for the past four years, there is great news for you. According to several HR professionals, a candidate with a technical degree and a working experience of a few years will be in high demand in 2014.
With steady increase in business and the need to move up the value chain in the services as well as products business sectors, the requirement of professionals with technical knowledge and team management experience is expected to grow.  This trend is expected to spur the recruitment of the young experienced professional.
“The impact of slowdown and a gloomy business scenario have had its impact on managerial talent and extremely strong organisations have resorted to layoffs, extended block closures and leave without pay in 2013. The services sector, in comparison, has done very well, with many success stories of PE funding,’’ says Rahul Nene, partner, DEININGER Management Consultants Pvt. Ltd. “Thus organisations which have followed prudent norms of governance and kept costs on a tight leash,  are the ones that emerged stronger than before, and this holds true for employees as well.”
This trend is expected to spur hiring of personnel with hands-on experience on working in a tight market; someone who understands the necessity of being a team player and ready to come for less than what the more experienced officials would expect.
“The global IT scenario has changed. The way the world does business today is markedly different from how it used to be five years back. The employee with a few years of experience is being forced to multitask, and produce results within a shorter timeframe, on a smaller budget. Also, his salary expectations are much less than someone with 10 years of experience. All these factors make young professionals a lucrative option to prospective employers,’’ says Hema. S of Apollo Health Street.
“These young professionals not only have the required hands-on experience of the workings, but because of the work scenario, have been able to build necessary skills to deliver more than the required job responsibilities. This makes them ideal for jobs like the engineering manager or product marketing manager,” says Nene.
Personnel with skills such as attention to details, an eye for quality, the ability to grasp and translate technical capabilities into benefits, along with a technical degree are what employers would be looking to recruit, going forward says Hema.
Careers expected to be much in demand include engineering managers, product managers (marketing and technical development), IT Manager and solution development professionals.

“Demand For Taxation Professionals And Financial Controllers Will Increase In 2014”

Interview Of The Day: “Demand For Taxation Professionals And Financial Controllers Will Increase In 2014”

Interview Of The Day: “Demand For Taxation Professionals And Financial Controllers Will Increase In 2014”
Nicolas Dumoulin, regional director, Michael Page India, shares the job outlook for the Finance discipline.

How is the Indian recruitment market for the Finance discipline?
The Indian recruitment market is a challenging yet highly promising environment. The Finance jobseeker market is fairly active and many jobseekers are always exploring opportunities, however they can be somewhat indecisive and often require coaching during transitions. On the client side, the market is saturated with low fees and volume-focused competitors that have reduced client trust in consulting companies because of poor quality, especially at the mid level. During the year, we have seen that clients have been hesitant in closing positions because of the uncertainty in the market and have also been highly focused on the cost of recruiting. This has resulted in a lot of positions taking longer to be filled. The positions that were in high demand during 2013 are in the area of tax and internal audit.
How was the recruitment market activity for the Finance discipline throughout 2013?
Recruitment market activity within Finance has fluctuated during the year. We saw a slowdown in recruitment from August to September 2013, mostly due to the fact that companies were reviewing their budget/headcount for 2014 and postponed all non-critical recruitment. Nevertheless, the Michael Page Finance team has seen an increase in the number of mandates outsourced mainly because of new client development by our teams in Mumbai and Delhi.
What are the expectations for recruitment market activity in India for the Finance discipline in 2014 – the key themes or trends that are emerging?
We expect 2014 to be the next step in the growth of Michael Page Finance. With the world economy growing again, we expect more and more international players coming into the market and looking for a reliable partner to work with for their recruitment needs. We expect that we will be leveraging our growth on our current international client base. In addition, we also see an increase in demand for a more specialised approach of recruitment based on financial profiles, due to the growing complexity of the finance function at the middle and senior level. With 20 specialised consultants in our finance team, we are in a very strong position to benefit from this market trend.
Hot jobs in Finance in 2014:
For 2014, we will see an increase in the demand for professionals who are specialists in the field of taxation, as the focus of the government to increase tax income will force companies to have stronger tax department relationships in place. In addition, we foresee a growing demand for financial controllers, because market sentiment has improved for foreign companies entering and up scaling their business in India. The main drivers for this are the recovering developed economies.
Best locations to work in Finance:
Best locations to work are Delhi NCR, Gurgaon and Bangalore. Reason being that most head offices of multi-nationals, sizeable Indian companies and shared services are based out of them. In addition, Pune is coming up as a challenger.

NEW DELHI: Samsung's next-generation professional-grade tablets, the Galaxy Note Pro and Galaxy Tab Pro, have appeared online a number of times, courtesy of leaks and rumours. And now, the two tablets have been confirmed by the South Korean giant.

Samsung has put up banners of the Galaxy Note Pro and Galaxy Tab Pro at its Consumer Electronics Show stall, suggesting that the two models will be unveiled when the tech expo kicks off tonight. The specifications and benchmark scores of the yet-unannounced high-end tablets have already surfaced online.

The 12.2-inch Galaxy Note Pro tablet is expected to be available in Wi-Fi and LTE (4G) variants, bearing model numbers SM-P900 and SM-P905, respectively, according to a previous report.

The 4G version of the tablet will sport a 12.2-inch display with a resolution of 2560x1600 pixels and 16:10 aspect ratio. The tablet will be powered by a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor and Adreno 330 GPU. Reliance Jio plans to provide connectivity speed to subscribers that will be 10-12 times faster as compared to 3G networks.

NEW DELHI: Reliance Jio Infocomm, which has pan-India spectrum for 4G wireless broadband services, plans to provide connectivity speed to subscribers that will be 10-12 times faster as compared to 3G networks.

"We are practically achieving a speed of 49 megabit per second downlink (download), and uplink is between 8-9 mbps. Theoretically, the present set up that we have, can achieve speed of 112mbps downlink," an RJIL official told .

At a speed of 49mbps an user can download a full movie, which is generally of 600 megabyte size, in about 2 minutes. The average top speed of 3G network is pegged at 4mbps.

RJIL is the only company in India to have nationwide 4G spectrum. It holds large chunk 20Mhz in one frequency band known as wireless broadband access (BWA) specturm. It has been allocated 2.2 crore numbers to start its services. The company is running trial of products including phone and TV services that it plans to provide through 4G network. RJIL will provide outdoor customer premise equipment (CPE) that will connect to its mobile tower.

"There will be a wire which will run into house of customers from this CPE that can be connected to various devices and create a local wi-fi network for people to access broadband. There will be a set-top-box that we will provide which will facilitate both broadband and television services," the official said.

The STB has been developed on Google's Android platform. Besides CPE, RJIL has plans to connect to those homes which won't get strong signals with optical fibre network.

Gearing up to foray into TV services market, Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL) has loaded 150 channels that it will provide across all devices ranging from mobile phone to TV sets using its high speed 4G network. "We have almost all leading TV channels across all genres from leading houses- Sony, Zee, TV18, Star and others. This is trial phase and we will add more channels as we get ready for commercial launch," said another official. He said its TV service will have a 'Catch UP' feature that will allow users to see programmes of the past 7 days. "We have our data centre ready which will automatically store these content."

India's cable TV market had more than 9.6 crore subscribers till the end of December 2012, followed by DTH services with over 5.45 crore. The 4G network based 'Jio Television' can serve as third alternative for Indian consumers, the official said, without specifying the time for its commercial launch

Infosys mulling double-digit salary hike

Infosys is considering double digit pay raises as chairman NR Narayana Murthy looks to keep the workforce of 1.5 lakh motivated.

BANGALORE: Infosys is considering double-digit pay raises as chairman NR Narayana Murthy looks to keep the workforce of 1.5 lakh motivated, people aware of discussions in the company said.

Although growth is showing signs of picking up, several senior executives have left the Bangalore-based company in recent months, making it imperative for attractive pay raises to keep employee morale high.

"Not only have they decided to hand out bigger pay increases, there will also be more promotions," said a senior industry executive on condition of anonymity. "Hikes could fall in the 8-12% range to motivate employees," the person said.

Infosys usually announces pay increases in June. A spokeswoman for the company declined to comment. Last year, Infosys raised salaries for staff in India by 8% on average, shortly after founder Murthy returned to lead the company as executive chairman in June.

"I think Murthy's going to offer higher wage hikes because a combination of hikes and other factors will be critical to retaining people," said Ajit Isaac, managing director and chief executive of Ikya Human Capital Solutions, a staffing company that serves the Indian IT sector.

Analysts said the decision to offer higher pay hikes is a welcome one although it could impact the company's margins. "At this point, improving employee sentiment matters more than worrying about dip in margins," an analyst with a foreign brokerage firm said on condition of anonymity as he is not authorized to speak to the media.

Attrition at Infosys was 17.3% at the end of the September quarter, the highest among the tier-1 Indian IT providers, illustrating that the company had become fertile poaching ground for rivals, as demand picked up for the $108 billion outsourcing industry.

In comparison, Tata Consultancy Services, which had announced a 5-10% pay increase in April, had an attrition of 10.9% at the end of second quarter.

Last June, Wipro said it was raising salaries by 6-8% for its employees

Nvidia plans to put a supercomputer in your pocket

Nvidia plans to put a supercomputer in your pocket
The K1 is Nvidia's first mobile chip to incorporate Kepler graphics tech that it uses in high-end components it makes for PC gamers.

LAS VEGAS: Chipmaker Nvidia gave new details of an upcoming K1 chip with beefed-up graphics for mobile gadgets and cars as it faces a slowing personal computer industry and harsh competition in smartphones and tablets.

The K1 is Nvidia's first mobile chip to incorporate the Kepler graphics technology the company uses in the high-end components it makes for PC game enthusiasts, chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang told reporters at an event in Las Vegas on Sunday ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show.

Huang in recent years has expanded Nvidia's business beyond its core PC market and into mobile devices with the company's Tegra lineup of chips. But he has encountered heavy competition from larger Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics in making components for tablets and smartphones.

Nvidia is betting that adding cutting-edge graphics technology to its mobile chips will entice more manufacturers and consumers to see tablets as viable alternatives to consoles for playing high-end games like first-person shooters.

"We've brought mobile computing to the same level as desktop computing... the same level as supercomputing," Huang said of the K1's graphics technology.

Nvidia's most recent Tegra 4 processors are used in Microsoft's Surface 2 tablet and a smartphone made by Xiaomi in China, but Wall Street is concerned the company is making too little progress for the money it spends to develop the chips.

In the third quarter, sales from Nvidia's Tegra mobile chips fell 54% and sales from its PC graphics chips, which account for the majority of the company's total revenue, declined 2%.

The K1 was previously codenamed Logan, an alias of the comic book superhero Wolverine. An automotive version of the chip will be ideal for camera-based computation in future self-driving cars with applications like pedestrian detection and collision avoidance, Huang said.

Following in the footsteps of recent chip announcements from Qualcomm, Samsung and Apple, Nvidia's Tegra K1 lineup will also include a version with 64-bit features typically found in personal computers.

Processors with 64-bit features can take advantage of more memory than 32-bit processors now found in most mobile devices, potentially letting them work faster and more efficiently.

Current smartphones don't have enough memory to give 64-bit processors an advantage of 32-bit chips, but future phones probably will include enough memory to give the 64-bit processors a performance boost.

Nvidia said it expects a 32-bit version of the K1 chip to appear in devices in the first half of 2014, with the 64-bit chip appearing later in the year.

With progress in mobile devices slow, Nvidia is increasingly looking to the automotive industry and cloud computing to fuel future growth. It has made deals with Audi, BMW and Tesla to use Tegra chips in dashboard entertainment and navigation systems.

At last year's Consumer Electronics Show, Nvidia unveiled a handheld gaming device called Shield, made with its Tegra 4 chip and based on Google's Android platform. Nvidia has not said how many Shield devices it has shipped since their launch in July
