Windows Phone 8.1's rumoured notification customisation settings leaked in image

Windows Phone 8.1's rumoured notification customisation settings leaked in imagewindows-phone-8.1-leak-image-635.jpg

Windows Phone users, who have been missing a notification centre, might soon be relieved, if an image of the incoming Windows Phone 8.1 is true.
WMPoweruser has posted an image showing the purported lockscreen settings of the upcoming revamped version of the Windows Phone operating system, Windows Phone 8.1.
The purported image of the Windows Phone 8.1 shows notification customisation settings that include up to four quick access settings. The leaked image also reveals a new turn on/off notification feature for apps, which will reportedly not disable the Live Tiles functionality of the app on the device. In addition, the leaked image also shows a banner notification for the Windows Phone, although it does not detail the functionality. The leaked image also includes icons for Wi-Fi Hot spot, brightness, Wi-Fi and airplane mode.
Unfortunately, the purportedly leaked image of the Windows Phone 8.1 notification customisation settings is blurred and not all features are visible.
On Tuesday, a report revealed that Microsoft would ship its upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 with two new features - a notification centre that can be accessed by swiping down from top of the screen, just like Android and iOS, apart from a voice-based assistant believed to be codenamed 'Cortana'.
The report suggested that Microsoft intends to replace the existing Bing Search on Windows Phone devices to offer voice or text input interactions. The Verge claims that the rumoured voice-based assistant 'Cortana' will be similar to Apple Siri technology and Google Now, and can learn location context from the Windows Phone device.
The report noted that the Redmond giant has been testing copies of Windows Phone 8.1 internally and plans to unveil the rumoured Windows Phone upgrade at Build Developer Conference in April next year.

TRANSIT by Soen portable Bluetooth speaker comes to India at Rs. 12,990

TRANSIT by Soen portable Bluetooth speaker comes to India at Rs. 12,990

American audio equipment maker Soen Audio is set to announce its entry into the Indian market. The company will officially launch its popular TRANSIT Bluetooth speaker in the country later this week priced at Rs. 12,990. The speaker is already available at leading online retailers.
TRANSIT by Soen, a California-based company that specialises in high-end audio equipment, is a compact, premium Bluetooth speaker set that sports 1.3" x 6.6" x 3.8" dimensions and weighs around half a kilogram. The speaker is powered by a rechargeable battery that gives around 8 hours of playback time on a single charge. It also comes with a built-in mic, which means you can pair TRANSIT with your phone for hands-free calling.
NDTV Gadgets had a chance to spend some time with the speaker and our overall impression was extremely positive. TRANSIT exudes quality from first glance at the packaging of the product, to the time you hold the speaker in your hand, and of course when you start listening to music.
Transit by Soen
The build quality is excellent and the speaker comes with a magnetic cover that snaps on to offer protection from dust and accidental damage when not in use. The speaker can lie flat on its back or you can push a button to bring out the kickstand, which makes it ideal for placing on, say, a bedside table. The retail pack comes with a USB charger, a Micro-USB cable, documentation, as well as a 3.5mm audio cable (for the aux-in port).
TRANSIT by Soen has a flip power button on the side, with the pairing button sandwiched between the volume up and down buttons at the top. The Micro-USB and aux-in ports are at the side as well. Getting started by pairing the speaker with our smartphone was simple enough, like most Bluetooth speakers.
As far as the audio quality is concerned, we were impressed by the clarity of sound, which did not distort even at maximum volume. However, we found ourselves wishing that the speaker could go a notch louder. The bass performance was impressive for a speaker this size; probably the best we've come across in a compact Bluetooth speaker.
As stated earlier, the company claims 8 hours of audio playback on a single charge, but we did not get a chance to test this claim in the limited time we had with our unit.
Transit by Soen
TRANSIT by Soen retails for $200 in the US, which makes the Indian price of Rs. 12,990 extremely competitive. The product will hope to take some marketshare away from Bose Soundlink Mini Bluetooth speaker, which was launched in India earlier this year carrying a price tag of Rs. 16,200.
"Our mission is to create best-in-class products with stunning sound and elegant designs," says Hari Seedhar, co-founder and Head of Marketing at Soen Audio. "With TRANSIT by Soen we are taking portable entertainment to the next level."
Commenting on the pricing, Harpreet Kaur Sapra, co-founder & Chief of Operations, Love 4 Apple, who are the exclusive online distributors of Soen Audio products in India, said, "Our commitment to India is to bring the best in the world accessories at price points that match the global market. With TRANSIT by Soen we have matched a dollar to rupee target price, something unheard of, as far as technology goods in India are concerned."
TRANSIT by Soen is now available via online retailers like Amazon India and Love 4 Apple, with other leading retailers set to follow.

Sony PlayStation 4 launched in India at Rs. 39,990, available January 6

Sony PlayStation 4 launched in India at Rs. 39,990, available January 6

Sony has launched its next-generation game console in India, the PlayStation 4, which it has priced at Rs. 39,990. The PS4 will be available on shelves in the country starting 6 January 2014.
Additional controller and the PlayStation Camera have been priced at an identical Rs 4,990. First-party gaming titles have been priced at Rs. 3,999 while third-party titles will range between Rs. 2,499 and Rs. 4,499.

Notably, the PlayStation 4 was launched in the US on November 15Earlier this month, Sony revealed it had sold more than 2.1 million PlayStation 4 consoles after less than three weeks on the market. This follows Sony's statistic that it had sold 1 million consoles on launch day.
The latest PlayStation will be released in its home market Japan in February. Sony also announced that looking at the current PlayStation 4 sales figures, it was on track to hit its worldwide target of 5 million units by March 2014.
The Sony PS4 is powered by an integrated CPU-GPU design, featuring a 8-core low power x86-64 AMD "Jaguar" CPU, coupled with a 1.84 TFLOPS AMD Radeon GPU. It also features a secondary processor that does the network processing tasks in standby mode, in order to optimise power consumption.
The PS4 features 8GB of GDDR5 RAM for memory, coupled with a 500GB hard disk drive. Also onboard is a Blu-ray disc and DVD drive. Connectivity options include 2 USB 3.0 ports, one AUX port, an Ethernet port, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 (EDR), an HDMI out port, and an optical-out port.
Interestingly, both Microsoft and Sony have opted for an x86-based CPU-GPU SoC architecture for their consoles, powered by AMD. This also signals a convergence of game development and releases for the console and PC platforms, making it easier for developers to harness the potential of the hardware across platforms.
Microsoft's next-generation console, the Xbox One (Review), is the only real competition for the Sony PS4, especially in India, where the Nintendo Wii U has yet to make an appearance. For now, Microsoft only gave a tentative launch date for the Xbox One in India during the E3 2013 event, saying it would arrive by late 2014. Since then of course, reports have indicated a slightly earlier launch, by mid-2014.

BlackBerry Messenger to come preloaded on LG smartphones

BlackBerry Messenger to come preloaded on LG smartphones

BlackBerry has announced that its cross-platform messaging app, BBM, will now come preinstalled on LG smartphones.
The Canadian company announced that the LG's mid-range phablet, the G Pro Lite would be the first LG device to come with BBM preinstalled.
However, LG has not revealed other smartphone names that would come preloaded with BBM. The BBM app allows users to exchange texts, voice notes and pictures with friends and others. It also offers group chat. Users need to sign-in with a BlackBerry ID following which a PIN is allocated to them, in a manner similar to BlackBerry Messenger on BlackBerry. Users can then add friends by sharing their PIN with friends via SMS, email and social networks in addition to QR codes.
Commenting on the announcement, Kevin Shin Vice President of Marketing for Asia, the Middle East and CIS countries of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company said, "BBM is widely used throughout the Middle East, Africa and Indonesia where smartphone users tend to engage heavily in social networking. The LG G Pro Lite offers an optimized BBM experience with its large, high quality display and embedded Stylus Pen."
BlackBerry's Executive Vice President for BBM, Andrew Bocking said, "People across the globe are using BBM to connect with each other and the enthusiasm has been phenomenal. We're extremely pleased that LG Electronics will help bring their customers a more seamless experience with BBM by preloading the app, starting with the G Pro Lite in key markets."
BlackBerry finally released the much-awaited BlackBerry Messenger service to users of Android and iPhone devices in October, after the initial rollout hit a roadblock due to a leaked Android build of BBM that went viral ahead of the official launch.
BBM was downloaded more than 10 million times on iOS and Android within the first 24 hours, bringing in over 20 million new users to the BlackBerry Messenger platform in the first week.
It's worth pointing out that the Micromax Canvas smartphone range in India already comes preinstalled with BBM app, which the company announced in September this year. In addition, BlackBerry also announced that its cross-platform messaging app will be preinstalled on a number of Android smartphones from domestic brands, namely Celkon, Spice and Zen, starting December.

6 breakfast cereals healthier than others

Did you know that even a bowlful of 'healthy'breakfast cereals could add to your calorie count?

Doctors, for sometime now, have debated on the permissible level of sugar in breakfast cereals, especially of the coloured and sugar-frosted varieties. While it is advisable to check the nutrition value of the breakfast cereal before buying it, one should also consciously make healthier lifestyle choices by having all cereals with skimmed or semi-skimmed milk, and avoiding to add extra sugar among others, but if you still like a bit of sweetness in your breakfast substitute white sugar with fruits (even dry fruits) like banana, dates, raisins, or any citrus fruit. A wholesome breakfast it would make for, while staving off your urge for midday snacking. Even those maintaining a workout routine can derive maximum benefit from this habit, as it also helps them get past their weight loss plateau.

Medical doctor and wellness expert, Dr Shikha Sharma helps us list breakfast cereals that are healthier than the rest.

Porridge
Porridge is the most healthy breakfast idea. It is rich in minerals and has high fibre content that keeps blood sugar under control. Use a little jaggery if you wish to sweeten it, otherwise you can top it with fresh fruits or sprinkle some raisins and almonds.

Cornflakes
Abundant in carbohydrates, iron and Vitamin B complex, cornflakes work very well for school kids and elders too. It is a particularly good breakfast in the rainy months because the body starts holding water owing to high moisture in the air.

Wheat flakes
It is a modification of wheat porridge and is a nice change from run-of-the-mill breakfast cereals. But unless fortified with extra calcium, it is not much use having just wheat flakes for breakfast.

Oatmeal
A bowl of oats in the morning is great for those suffering high cholesterol and diabetes, provided you don't add extra sugar to it. The high fibre content in oats balances the blood sugar, and relieves people prone to depression.

Muesli
Muesli is a great breakfast choice as it has raisins, almonds and four different grains. The comparatively high sugar content in muesli keeps growing children and those into sports, energetic. It can be served with both milk and yoghurt. You can creatively garnish the muesli and serve it up as a quick evening snack to kids.

Poha/rice crispies
The poha version of rice crispies is popular in Indian households, and makes for a light and healthy breakfast. But make sure your poha is only lightly sauteed.

Aside from the usual cornflakes and oats, there is a whole assortment of chocolate, honey and fruit-flavoured breakfast cereals that find takers among young kids. Just how good or bad an idea is it?

Avers Dr Sharma, "Although it is best to go for natural cereals, it is alright to break free from the mundane breakfast chart once in a while. The purpose is to serve up a good mix that is both appealing to the taste buds and has nutritional value."

Next time you are at the departmental store picking breakfast cereals, don't get carried away by the glossy packaging

Infosys to hire 16,000 graduates next year: Murthy

Infosys to hire 16,000 graduates next year: Murthy

Infosys to hire 16,000 graduates next year: Murthy
Infosys expects to hire as many as 16,000 college graduates next fiscal year.

MUMBAI: India's second largest software services firm Infosys will hire up to 16,000 engineers next year, the company's chairman NR Naryana Murthy said.

"We have already started the hiring process for next year. We will be hiring around 15,000-16,000 engineers for next year and are already in process," Murthy said at an event here.

With improving demand for outsourcing services in the US and European markets, which account for over 80% of the revenues of the $108 billion Indian IT sector, hiring is expected to be better than the last few years.

Speaking on a range of issues, Murthy said that people in the country needs to take more definitive steps towards development.

"India is a country of empty words, not action. Only repeating, 'Mera Bharat Mahaan' won't help. Learn to finish the race first in order to finish first," Murthy reiterated.

He encouraged students to be open to new ideas and not be cynical. "Move from apathy to action. Aim at becoming better than me. Luck will
favour those who are prepared."

Talking about the economic environment in the country, he said it is going to change going forward.

"As long as they (government) make businesses grow in the country, as long as we collect more taxes, as long as we use those taxes efficiently, I think the confidence will come back, every one will be very happy with whatever government is in the Centre and we will be better country," he said.

Murthy called upon educational authorities to concentrate on providing quality education. "Students are the future of this country. Quality software engineers will carve the way ahead for becoming a software global giant," he said.

On developing managerial skills, Murthy said it requires learning to understand other cultures, assimilating good values and being courteous

Wipro launches online programme for students
Wipro unveiled an online programme to train undergraduate students in finance and accounts to enhance their job skills in both subjects.

BANGALORE: Indian IT bellwether Wiprounveiled an online programme to trainundergraduate students in finance and accounts to enhance their job skills in both subjects, the company said Wednesday.

"We have started imparting skills online to final year students of commerce and business administration in select degree colleges across Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad to enhance their employability in finance and accounting," Wipro back office global head Subhasish Biswas said in a statement here.

The online course has been designed in two parts - basics of finance and accounting and corporate readiness training.

Successful students will be certified after assessing their skills for a placement in the global software major.

The 24-hour programme consists of modules, which give students flexibility to work over two months along with their graduation course.

The course modules are in a video-based PowerPoint presentation format to understand the concepts.

"As we need readily employable workforce, our expertise in training delivery in the services sector enabled us to create a platform for graduating students to pursue a rewarding career in finance and accounts," Biswas said.

Wipro's business process outsourcing (BPO) division has partnered with Firstnaukri.com to promote the initiative and allow the job portal to host the online module and distribute it to colleges with which it has tie-up across the country.

"Indian businesses are struggling to recruit youth with right technical and soft skill sets. It is becoming imperative for companies to focus on skill development and employability of youth entering workforce," Firstnaukri.com business head Deepali Singh said in the statement

Indian IT companies to help US retailers during holiday season

Indian IT companies to help US retailers during holiday season
Cognizant, Wipro, Infosys and Mindtree are helping retailers in the United States cope with the peak holiday season shopping rush.

BANGALORE: Indian technology outsourcers such as Cognizant, WiproInfosys and Mindtreeare helping retailers in the United States cope with the peak holiday season shopping rush and ensure their shopping portals and systems stay robust, three months after surging traffic crashed the US federal healthcare insurance website leaving many unable to log on.

The holiday season, starting from Thanksgiving in the last week of November and going up to New Year's eve on December 31, is crucial for retailers, accounting for about 30-40% of their annual sales, said firms. Any downtime in the shopping portals during this period could result in substantial losses and long-term damage to their image and perception.

The period could represent about 30% of sales revenue and nearly 40% of profit for retailers, said Sandilya Gopalan, vice-president, CognizantBusiness Consulting, which supports 14 of the top 30 US retailers and 11 of the top 30 global retailers, and over 30,000 stores during the shopping season.

"The peak shopping frenzy is not new. But a significant increase in peak sales and selling channels, coupled with a potpourri of IT systems that may or may not have scaled in line with business and operational complexity, and higher customer expectations make it a humongous challenge to ensure a smooth period," he said. The risk is greater these days because of channel proliferation, he added.

The downtime can affect both stores as well as online channels. For instance, any glitch in point-of-sale systems can annoy customers driving them to shop elsewhere. Similarly, even if the website does not crash, slow response time can push customers towards competing websites.

"This (online retail) is an emerging domain for Indian IT firms," said Pradeep Mukherji, head of outsourcing advisory firm Avasant's Asia operations. He said after the recent disruption of the Obamacare website due to a large amount of web traffic, managing excess load on e-commerce sites had become an area of focus.

"Many retailers see visitor traffic going up exponentially online, 20-100 times compared with a normal day," said Radha R, senior vice-president at Mindtree, which is currently working with more than 15 retailers.

There have been many instances in the past of the retailer's website going down due to increased load, resulting in lost sales and bad press. As a precautionary step, retailers are performing a rigorous check on their operational effectiveness and their ecommerce site scalability and availability to handle the increased traffic, she said.

While Mindtree expects the full picture to emerge in January after the shopping season ends, early trends show that there is a slight downtrend in store retailing but online sales are increasing, she said.

Companies, such as Mindtree and Wipro, began preparations for the holiday rush by doing trial runs as early as August. "We have been working with our key customers in retail to ensure their systems work fine during the peak season," said Bhanumurthy BM, senior vice-president and global head (application services and strategic alliances).

"More and more consumers are getting comfortable with online transactions. Product lines offered and purchased on the web is also expected to increase year-on-year," said Sanjeev Nikore, president for consumer services at HCL Technologies

LG announces world's first Chrome-based desktop
LG has announced the world's first Google-powered Chromebase All-in-One PC.
LONDON: LG has announced the world's first Google-powered Chromebase All-in-One PC.

The Linux-based operating system used to come pre-installed on laptops or boxes that required similar monitor, however, it would be a first PC to incorporate the system.

According to the BBC, Chrome-based computers tend to be cheaper than Windows-powered systems, in part because Google does not charge manufacturers to include its software.

Being cheaper has its drawbacks as the operating system runs only a limited range of applications and popular apps like Skype, Powerpoint, Photoshop and iTunes are unavailable, but can be downloaded from Google's free or paid web-based alternatives.

The LG Chromebase desktop computer measures 21.5-inch with a 1080p full-HD screen that resembles Apple iMacs, HP's Spectre One range and Dell's Inspiron One family, which cost 700 pounds or more.

According to the report, the Chromebase PC has just 16GB of storage, which is relatively a very low amount as Google intends to encourage users to store their data on cloud, thereby reducing costs.

LG Chromebase desktop computer is expected to be launched in January at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegasadded.

Looking for a job? Log on to Facebook

Looking for a job? Log on to Facebook
More and more people in the country are finding jobs through social media websites, a study says.
MUMBAI: More and more people in the country are finding jobs through social media websites, a study says.

"More than half the respondents in India, or 56%, said they were contacted through social media about employment opportunity in the prior (last) year, while 25% of respondents said they secured a job through social media," global workforce solutions firm Kelly Services says in its Workforce Index survey 'Socialising Recruitment'.

About 64% of respondents agreed that social media was a good platform to share job referrals or opportunities.

Also, about 57% of the respondents in the country use social media sites when making employment decisions.

"The spread of social media in the community is now mirrored in the workplace where employees are discussing their work, their employers and canvassing job openings and career choices," Kelly Services India MD Kamal Karanth said.

In the Asia Pacific region, Indonesia and Thailand seem to be using the social media most fruitfully. Thirty-eight per cent of respondents secured a job through social media there last year, followed by China (35%), Malaysia (28%), Singapore (22%), Hong Kong (19%), New Zealand (17%) and Australia (14%).
