Moto G review: Not the best, but decent for $179

Moto G review: Not the best, but decent for $179

motorola-moto-g-front.jpg
You're not getting the best or the latest technology with Motorola's $179 Moto G smartphone. What you do get is a great price for something close.
Motorola bills the Moto G as the phone for the rest of us - the ones who can't afford $500 to $700 for a high-end smartphone. That's a big deal overseas, where carriers don't subsidize phones with two-year service contracts the way they do in the United States. But even in the U.S., more people are moving to contract-free plans and ones that offer frequent upgrades, meaning the full retail price is what's going to matter.
The Moto G started shipping in the U.S. this week, initially for the GSM networks used by AT&T and T-Mobile. I spent the past week testing the Moto G, comparing the phone primarily with its more expensive cousin, Motorola's $500 Moto X. I also put it up against another lower-cost phone, Google's $349 Nexus 5, as well as the premium, $649 iPhone 5s from Apple.
Where the Moto G fell short was in its camera, battery life and inability to access faster, 4G LTE cellular networks. For everything else I tested, the Moto G stood up well.
Motorola, which is owned by Google Inc., doesn't skimp in equipping the Moto G with a speedy processor. Apps launch almost as quickly as they do on the phone's pricier rivals. The Moto G runs a fairly recent version of Google's Android system, with a promised upgrade to the latest, Kit Kat, early next year.
The Moto G also has a decent screen. It's about as sharp as the Moto X's and the iPhone's, enough for 720p video, though the Nexus and various Samsung phones do better by offering full, 1080p high definition. The Moto G's screen measures 4.5 inches (11.4 centimeters) diagonally, which is larger than the iPhone's but small for Android. Colors aren't as rich as on the Moto X's display, but if I want a superb visual experience, I'd turn to a tablet, a TV or even a movie theater. For a phone, the Moto G's screen delivers video quite well.
motorola-moto-g-front-back-635.jpg
The Moto G doesn't win points on size and weight. Although the screen is smaller than the Moto X's 4.7-inch (11.9-centimeter) display, the phone overall is a tad bulkier and 10 percent heavier. The Moto G has a larger frame surrounding the screen - something phone makers have been trying to shrink.
As for the other shortcomings
Cellular access
The Moto G delivers 3G performance at best. Many parts of the world are moving to 4G, but Motorola points out that many of its target markets are still upgrading to 3G. Even in the U.S., many regions lack 4G. If I'm doing a lot of things requiring top-notch speeds, I'm better off finding a Wi-Fi network anyway.
Battery life
The Moto G has 6 percent less battery capacity than the Moto X. I got about up to eight hours of streaming video on Hulu with the Moto G, compared with nine to 10 hours on the Moto X. Although the Moto G has a removable plastic back, the battery can't be exchanged with a spare. That said, eight hours for streaming video is a lot, and you can stretch it to a full day with more moderate use.
motorola-moto-g-camera.jpg
Camera
The main camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels, less than the 8 megapixels on the iPhone and the Nexus and the 10 megapixels on the Moto X. There's more to a good camera than the pixel count, but the pictures I took with the Moto G weren't particularly good, especially in low light. They are passable for selfies and Facebook posts, but you'll want a better camera for keepsakes. Perhaps the money you save on the phone can go to a point-and-shoot camera that takes better pictures.
The Moto G is also short on frills. Part of that stems from Motorola's philosophy not to tinker with the Android operating system too much. Many rival phone makers do just that and wind up creating more chaos and confusion.
Instead, Motorola tries to limit what it adds. In the case of the Moto X, you can twist the phone to automatically launch the camera. You can initiate voice commands by saying, "OK, Google Now." The Moto X also offers unprecedented customization when you order; you can choose everything from the color of the power button to a personalized message on the back cover.
motorola-moto-g-covers-635.jpg
The Moto G has none of that. The frills are limited to an FM radio tuner, something rare in smartphones. Just plug in a pair of headphones, which serves as the antenna. You can swap the back with a new plastic cover, but the phone isn't assembled at the factory to your specifications.
Be aware that the $179 price gets you 8 gigabytes of storage, half of what most phones offer. Given all the room your photos and video will need, pay the extra $20 for a 16 gigabyte model. Unfortunately, there's no slot for memory cards, as some Android phones offer.
Motorola sells the phone unlocked, meaning you can switch carriers as long as they use GSM. Verizon and Sprint are among the few carriers in the world using a different technology, CDMA. A Verizon version is coming early next year, while Sprint won't say whether it will have one.
Phone makers have been trying to set themselves apart by loading phones with more and more features, only some of which are useful. Motorola doesn't try to do that with the Moto G, apart from including an FM tuner. Instead, it's distinguishing itself through price. No one can question whether that's useful.

Amazon testing delivery packages using drones, CEO Bezos says

Amazon testing delivery packages using drones, CEO Bezos says

amazon-prime-air-635.jpg
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos revealed Sunday that his company is looking to the future with plans to use "octocopter" mini-drones to fly small packages to consumers in just 30 minutes.
The US retail giant's ambitious project still requires additional safety testing and federal approval, but Bezos estimated that Amazon "Prime Air" would be up and running within four to five years.
A demo video posted on the company's website showed the tiny robotic devices picking up packages in small yellow buckets from Amazon's fulfillment centers and then whizzing through the air to deliver the items to customers just 30 minutes after they made their purchase on Amazon.com.
"I know this looks like science fiction. It's not," Bezos told CBS television's "60 Minutes" program.
"We can do half-hour delivery and we can carry objects, we think, up to five pounds (2.3 kilograms), which covers 86 percent of the items that we deliver."
The mini-drones are powered by electric motors and could cover areas within a 10-mile (16-kilometer) radius of fulfillment centers, thus covering a significant portion of the population in urban areas.
They operate autonomously and drop the items at the target locations thanks to GPS coordinates transmitted to them.
"It's very green, it's better than driving trucks around," said Bezos.
Amazon said the octocopters would be "ready to enter commercial operations as soon as the necessary regulations are in place," noting that the Federal Aviation Administration was actively working on rules for unmanned aerial vehicles.
It projected a more optimistic timeline than Bezos himself for the project to be activated, saying the FAA's rules could be in place as early as 2015 and that Amazon Prime Air would be ready at that time.
Bezos hinted that part of the motivation behind the mini-drones was to make sure Amazon remains on the cutting edge of the retail industry.
"Companies have short life spans. And Amazon will be disrupted one day," he said.
"I would love for it to be after I'm dead."

Apple buys Topsy, a company specialising in Twitter search and insights

Apple buys Topsy, a company specialising in Twitter search and insights

topsy-635.jpg
Apple Inc has acquired social media search and analytics startup Topsy, an unusual purchase for a hardware-focused company that has made few forays into social networking.
Apple confirmed the acquisition but would not say why it bought the company, which specializes in analyzing Twitter data and providing insights into current sentiment on a variety of topics.
The Wall Street Journal, which reported the news earlier, cited people familiar with the deal as saying Apple paid over $200 million.
"Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans," spokeswomanKristin Huguet said.
Topsy did not respond to requests for comment.
The iPad and iPhone maker often does what it calls "bolt-on" acquisitions, small deals to acquire technology that then gets integrated into existing or future products. Many of its acquisitions in recent years have been angled toward improving hardware.
This year, it paid a reported $350 million for Israeli 3D chip developer PrimeSense Ltd, perceived as an effort to incorporate gesture technology into its devices. And in 2008, it paid a reported $280 million for a semiconductor designer that eventually yielded the current line of processors that power the iPhone and iPad.
Apple's main effort in social media has revolved around Ping, a music-centered social sharing network that was at one point integrated into its iTunes app. The service, which lets users post music tracks they liked to a news feed, didn't catch on and was shut down.
But the California gadget maker has been increasingly making it easier for people to share photos, videos and news through its devices and directly to social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.
It also operates iTunes Radio, an online streaming music service that competes with Pandora and could benefit from Topsy's data on consumer sentiment.
Apple closed 0.9 percent lower on Monday and was holding steady in after-hours trading.
Why?
Speculation on Apple's motives ran the gamut on Monday, but some industry experts thought it likely that the company - which continually tries to enhance its iPhones, iPads and Macintosh computers in the face of ever-strengthening competition from the likes of Samsung Electronics - is looking to beef up customer-facing software.
"From an usage perspective, they can use it for the app store and iTunes," said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi, who added thatTopsy could be used, for instance, to better serve app recommendations to users.
"With apps, it is really difficult to find good recommendations," she said. "It's much harder to see what people use and why."
Apple also bought app-search tool Chomp last year, with the objective of sprucing up its online apps store, still one of the largest in the mobile industry along with Google Inc's Play for Android devices.
San Francisco-based Topsy is one Twitter's partners, enjoying direct access to the messaging service's billions of tweets over several years - and has indexed all them to make them readily and rapidly search-able.
The startup has received funding from BlueRun Ventures, Ignition Partners, the Founders Fund and Scott Banister.

WhatsApp, the popular mobile instant messaging service, has updated its iOS app bringing the redesigned iOS 7 user interface. The new update (2.11.5) also brings improved location sharing using the 3D maps.
Some of the new features introduced in the new version of WhatsApp for iPhone include a new broadcast list, allows users to send a message to a group of friends at once; brings overhauled interface for managing blocked contacts; larger thumbnails view; crop image feature before sending; new notifications alerts and sounds, and the default use of device's text size. The new update also introduces a new set of icons and chat bubbles.
The WhatsApp app is now offered as a free download, although new users would be charged $0.99 every year after getting one year of free access to the service, similar to how the service is offered on other platforms.
Not too long ago, WhatsApp updated its iPhone app adding support for iCloud chat history backup, restore functionality and sending multiple images at the same time. With the iCloud backup functionality, users are now able to have the option to back-up their message history to iCloud, Apple's cloud service. With the update, WhatsApp also changed its monetization model for the service on iPhone.
Earlier, WhatsApp claimed worldwide active user base of 300 million, with 20 million active users in India. WhatsApp also introduced push-to-talk voice messaging in the app on all mobile platforms including Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Nokia (Series 40 and Symbian), and Windows Phone.

BlackBerry says adoption of its mobile device management services is rising

BlackBerry says adoption of its mobile device management services is rising

woman-walking-past-blackberry-logo-ap-635.jpg
The number of large business and government clients that have installed or are testing BlackBerry Ltd's mobile device management service has risen roughly 20 percent over the past six months, the embattled smartphone maker said on Tuesday.
BlackBerry, which recently halted plans to sell itself and shook up its management team, said large customers such as Morgan Stanley and Boeing Co are currently running and testing its BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 (BES).
The product allows such companies to securely manage devices that run on Apple's iOS operating system and Google's Android operating system as well as BlackBerry devices on their internal networks. Apple and Android devices have eclipsed BlackBerry and now dominate the smartphone market.
BlackBerry is counting heavily on the service as it charts a new course under the leadership of recently appointed interim Chief Executive John Chen, who is keen to rebuild the company as more of a niche player focused on the so-called enterprise market of large business and corporate clients.
Chen, who took the reins at BlackBerry last month, issued an open letter to enterprise clients earlier this week, seeking to reassure them that the company is very much alive and here to stay.
The company, in a statement on Tuesday, said the number of enterprise clients that have now installed or are testing its BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 offering has risen to 30,000 from roughly 25,000 this summer.
"We enable any organization or government agency to manage iOS, Android and BlackBerry devices without compromising security," Stephen Bates, head of the enterprise business unit at BlackBerry, said in a statement.
The company also said it has enhanced its BES 10 product and that it is rolling out an updated 10.2 version to clients.
BlackBerry said in June that its BES product would also manage iOS and Android devices. It hopes that the offering will allow it to sell high-margin services to its large clients even if many, or all, of their employees are using smartphones made by BlackBerry's competitors.
The company hopes that focusing on its profitable enterprise business, which has long been a core strength, will help revive its fortunes after its new line of BlackBerry 10 smartphones failed to claw back market share from iPhone and Android devices.
BlackBerry shares were 5 Canadian cents lower at $6.75 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Tuesday afternoon in a down day for stock markets.

Facebook updates News Feed to display more news

Facebook updates News Feed to display more news

Facebook-newsfeed-ap-635.jpg
Facebook is boosting its efforts to put more news in its News Feed.
That is, real news from the news media, rather than status updates from friends.
The world's biggest social network, cognizant of its growing importance for discovering news, said in a blog post on Monday that it is revising the way it delivers information to its billion-plus users.
"People use Facebook to share and connect, including staying current on the latest news, whether it's about their favourite celebrity or what's happening in the world," said the blog post from Facebook engineering manager Varun Kacholia and software engineer Minwen Ji.
"We've noticed that people enjoy seeing articles on Facebook, and so we're now paying closer attention to what makes for high quality content, and how often articles are clicked on from News Feed on mobile. What this means is that you may start to notice links to articles a little more often (particularly on mobile)."
The blog noted that "our surveys show that on average people prefer links to high quality articles about current events, their favourite sports team or shared interests, to the latest meme."
And Facebook will tweak the way its displays articles in user News Feeds: "This means that high quality articles you or others read may show up a bit more prominently in your News Feed, and meme photos may show up a bit less prominently," the engineers wrote.
They added that Facebook will also "show people additional articles similar to ones they had just read."
"Soon, after you click on a link to an article, you may see up to three related articles directly below the News Feed post to help you discover more content you may find interesting," they said.
But to avoid diminishing the updates from friends, Facebook will revise its "bumping," which means that after a user reads an article it may not show up again in the News Feed unless there are new comments from friends.
A study earlier this year showed Facebook is becoming a key source of news for users of the huge social network, even if people discover articles mostly by happenstance.
The study by the Pew Research Center, in collaboration with the Knight Foundation, found 64 percent of US adults use Facebook, and nearly half of those get some news from the service. That amounts to 30 percent of the overall US population who are "Facebook news consumers," Pew said.
Facebook reported in October that referral traffic from the social network to media sites has increased by over 170 percent over the past year.

Apple testing 12.9-inch iPads, may launch a 4K display model next year: Report

Apple testing 12.9-inch iPads, may launch a 4K display model next year: Report

ipad-salesman-635.jpg
In a follow-up to previous rumours, a new report claims that Apple is testing different prototypes of 12.9-inch iPad models, made for the company by its Chinese assembler partner Foxconn.

According to a report by Chinese publication PadNews (via Apple Insider), Apple is currently testing five different 12.9-inch iPad prototypes made by Foxconn. The report also mentions that Apple could launch a new iPad that features a 2K resolution screen, in the first half of 2014, and a 4K resolution screen, a few months after that.

The report cites sources as saying that Apple could launch the first model of the larger iPad in April and the 4K ultra-HD variant as part of the regular iPad launch in October 2014.

The report did not specify the resolution of the purported larger iPad models.

It's not the first time that rumours related to large screen iPads have surfaced.

Previously, the Wall Street Journal had reported that Apple was testing a new tablet measuring slightly less than 13-inches diagonally, citing officials at Apple's suppliers. Another report by Digitimes also hinted at Apple and Samsung working on devices with 12-inch or larger displays for their respective tablets.

Korean website ETNews.com had also reported that Apple was working on a new larger iPad with a 12.9-inch diagonal screen which would be called iPad Maxi. It had said that this iPad variant would launch in the first half of 2014 and would take on Ultrabooks. It would also target the educational market with digital textbooks. The website cited industry sources to report that Apple was in talks with display and component manufacturers in Korea for supplies for this tablet.

Nokia-Microsoft deal cleared by European Commission

Nokia-Microsoft deal cleared by European Commission

nokia-microsoft-deal-reuters-635.jpg
The European Commission approved on Wednesday Microsoft's nearly 5.5-billion-euro takeover of the mobile phone business of Finland's Nokia which once dominated the global industry.
The acquisition does "not raise any competition concerns, in particular because there are only modest overlaps between" the two companies, the Commission said in a statement.
The links that do exist between existing Microsoft activities and Nokia's smartphone devices "are unlikely to lead to competitors being shut out from the market," it said.
In smartphones and tablets, the two companies face "several strong rivals, such as Samsung andApple (who) will continue to compete with the merged entity," it said.
Software giant Microsoft would also have little incentive to restrict use of its Windows operating system for other device makers or of its mobile apps, it said.
Once the world leader in mobile phones, Nokia lost its top place to South Korea's Samsung in 2012, especially as its rivals took the lead in the key smartphone market.

Samsung's next flagship device, rumoured to be dubbed Galaxy S5, might be the first smartphone from the South Korean giant to sport a metal chassis.
As per a report published by Japanese site, EMS One the alleged Galaxy S5 would sport an aluminium unibody chassis and that it would be manufactured by Taiwanese based company, Catcher. The report claims that Catcher would be manufacturing between 10 million and 30 million Galaxy S5 metal unibody cases.
Notably, Catcher has been the company manufacturing aluminium unibody for devices like HTC One, Apple iPad mini 2, notes Phonearena.
In addition, the RB Men blog has posted a purported image of the Galaxy S5 with metal chassis. The alleged image reveals an unnamed Samsung device's rear panel which features metal back, instead of the plastic we have seen in other Galaxy smartphones.
Prior to this, a set of images allegedly showing a structural component of Samsung's next flagship smartphone, the rumoured Galaxy S5, was spotted online.
Earlier a report suggested the South Korean manufacturer plans to release two versions of the alleged Galaxy S5. As per the report, there would be two variants of the Galaxy S5: a premium variant sporting a metal chassis and a flexible OLED, and a variant which would come with the usual plastic body, as found on other Galaxy smartphones.
Further, the report also speculated that Samsung would initially manufacture around 800,000 to 1 million units of the alleged Galaxy S5 in January, and would increase the number up to 6 million units in February. The report claimed that Samsung would likely release the Galaxy S5 in March or April 2014.
Rumoured specifications of the alleged Galaxy S5 include a 64-bit Exynos chipset or a Snapdragon chipset; 3GB of RAM, a 16-megapixel camera, a 4000mAh battery and Android 4.4 KitKat with TouchWiz UI on top.

Samsung Galaxy S5 to come with 2K display, alleged benchmark listing reveals

Samsung Galaxy S5 to come with 2K display, alleged benchmark listing reveals

samsung-galaxy-reuters-635.jpg
A GFX Bench listing spotted by GSMArena has revealed a device codenamed Samsung SM-G900S sporting a screen resolution of 1440x2560 pixels (2K). The report notes that this device could be the Samsung Galaxy S5, which is expected to come with a 5.0- or 5.2-inch display, making the pixel density an incredible 560ppi at the said resolution. The listing also reveals that the device runs Snapdragon 800 chipset clocked at 2.4GHz alongside the Adreno 330 GPU, which may come as a disappointment to those hoping to see the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805, or indeed a 64-bit version of Samsung's own Exynos chip, make an appearance.
The listing is silent on other specifications, though the Samsung Galaxy S4 successor is expected to ship with a 16-megapixel rear camera, a 4000mAh battery, 3GB RAM and run Android 4.4 KitKat.
Earlier, a report suggested the South Korean manufacturer plans to release two versions of the Galaxy S5. As per the report, there would be two variants of the Galaxy S5: a premium variant sporting a metal chassis and a flexible OLED, and a variant which would come with the usual plastic body, as found on other Galaxy smartphones.
Recently, a purported image of the Galaxy S5 with metal chassis was spotted online. A metal chassis would be new ground for Samsung, a company that has always used plastic as the dominant material in its Galaxy range of smartphones.
Some reports have indicated that Samsung may announce the Galaxy S5 as early as January, in a bid to overcome 'disappointing' Galaxy S4 sales.
